By taking inactive status for their licenses, the Obamas would not be required to take those classes. The attendance would raise security issues and no doubt the people on the right would be screaming if the President spent time in a classroom. But that isn't why you ask, is it? Some states do allow some internet/remote study but not all of the classes can be taken that way. Again, the Obamas have not surrendered their law licenses but rather made them inactive. There is a big difference.

Steeler Fan - also the malpractice insurance required in order for them to keep their law licenses active is expensive and not necessary since they can't practice while he is President. So both of their licenses are on "inactive" status while he is President.
