Obama challenges Romney on past comments on bin Laden

President Obama escalated a war of words with Republican foe Mitt Romney, challenging the former Massachusetts governor to explain his 2007 comments suggesting that it might not be worth leveraging all U.S. resources to find Osama bin Laden.

The president denied that he or the United States were engaged in "excessive celebration" to mark the one-year anniversary of the mission that ended successfully with bin Laden's assassination at a safe haven in Pakistan.

President Obama denied that he or the United States were engaged in "excessive celebration" to mark the one-year anniversary of the mission that ended successfully with bin Laden's assassination at a safe haven in Pakistan.

"I hardly think that you have seen any excessive celebration taking place here," the president said at the White House. "And I think for us to use that time for some reflection, to give thanks to those who participated is entirely appropriate, and that's what's been taking place."

Obama continued, making no mention of Romney by name, but clearly intending to put his general election opponent on the spot, while taking a degree of credit for the mission.

Obama said in response:

As far as my personal role and what other folks would do, I'd just recommend that everybody take a look at people's previous statements in terms of whether they thought it was appropriate to go into Pakistan and take out bin Laden.

I assume that people meant what they said when they said it. That's been at least my practice. I said that I'd go after bin Laden if we had a clear shot at him and I did.

If there are others who have said one thing and now suggest they'd do something else, then I'd go ahead and let them explain it.

That was an unmistakable reference toward Romney's 2007 comments to the Associated Press that "it’s not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person," meaning bin Laden.

Those comments have become part of a bit of political gamesmanship surrounding the anniversary of the bin Laden mission, as Obama's re-election campaign works to win the president credit for his decision to authorize the risky mission.

Romney said after an event this morning in New Hampshire that "of course" he would have given the order to authorize the bin Laden mission. "Even Jimmy Carter would have given that order," said the former Massachusetts governor.

The Obama campaign has used Romney's 2007 remarks, though, to imply that Romney wouldn't have given that order.

"I also think it's worthwhile to make sure that, as we're heading into this general election ... the American people know where Mitt Romney did stand on it. It's not exploitation, it's fact," Obama's deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, told Andrea Mitchell this afternoon on MSNBC. "Mitt Romney ... said he wouldn't have gone into Pakistan to pursue bin Laden with actionable intelligence if the Pakistanis wouldn't get him [bin Laden]. And he also said he wouldn't move heaven and earth to get bin Laden. Well, the president did move heaven and earth."

After the Obama campaign released a campaign video that critics are calling an overt politicization of the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound, the President challenged Mitt Romney, bringing up the presidential candidate's comments from 2007 when he said the go-it-alone policy would be 'ill-timed and ill-considered.' NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Don W.-and what did Dubya do?Oh wait we don't want to talk about how big a failure Dubya was, because then we might think all Republicans are as worthless as Dubya. You Republicans think that the rest of America is as blind as you? If you want to pin your future on a worthless bum like Mitt Romney then you go right ahead.Dubya lied to his country and wasted billions searching for W.M.D. that were never there. That was all so you all could justify spending billions on a meaningless waste of blood and treasure to justify your military-industrial complexes demand for a bigger and bigger budget.Just like that idiot Ryan telling the C.B.O. that we needed to add billions back into the defense budget because they don't know what they need. How much Kick-back do you think they get in a year for stupid ideas like that, are you really that naive?Do you really believe that we can't afford to cut our defense budget and that the Pentagon doesn't know what they need?Don't you think the American taxpayer is being sold down the stream by these warhawks in Congress,I mean when I hear Sen.Graham and McCain and Leiberman talk about going to war I think that they are getting a kick-back.

    If Bid Laden or any of the other Al Qaeda members killed during the Obama presidency had been taken out during the Bush administration, Cheney would have snuck out in the middle of the night and chiseled Bush's face on Mt Rushmore.

    You right wing hypocrites are too much. You'de be throwing it in the liberal's faces had your side accomplished this. And, no Obama did not pull the trigger but he took a chance and gave the order. Grow up you big babies.

    I am an independent, no sides, Obama wins this and he wins on GM. He had the balls to go after Bin Laden and did so when many others would have hesitated to be politically correct. Then he did it again to resuce the relief worker. It takes guts and leadership to make those calls knowing a failure could be devasting to your presidency and relection. He made them, he took the chance and he deserves credit fot that. The same for saving GM. No, Romney would not have, he said so and he meant it, he would not have saved GM, he said so and he meant it. Things I like about him, but his double facing on these issues when it is clear what he would have done diminishes the value of his assets. If he does not have the balls to stand behind what he said before does he have the balls needed to make the tough calls, I'm not sure. I am sure Obama does.

    The GOP claims the President has no foreign policy. The decision to track and the order to kill Bin Laden were foreign policy, of course. The GOP, now caught in an obvious lie, tries to squirm away by saying the President is "divisive".

    The President issued the kill order and used America's best troops--DESPITE absolutely-certain Republican criticism of him, and regardless of what he did.

    If the risk-filled mission had failed? Republicans surely would have criticized him for being "ineffective, blundering, and not really understanding Americans." Actually, the President understood quite well what Americans wanted--Bin Laden dead. And made clear he would do it again. regardless of what the Republicans might concoct.

    The Republicans think they've hit a home run with this twisted "polarization" argument--which everyone knows is really an attempt to distract from actual polarization the GOP set out to (and did) create between themselves and women, Hispanics, and African-Americans, for example. Like "class warfare" (with the rich as victims): outside the country club, maybe it's just another shot in the dark ending up in the rough.

    To criticize Obama on Bin Laden?? Worst of all for the GOP--that's the best they've got. They continue to impress their base--and continue to fool no one.

    Sig set your alarm no republican blamed his decision, "Duh" is what they said. The hunt was for Bin Laden was already clearly a goal. The left is trying to blame that Romney would not have made the same decision. Would you also like to Know that the info that discovered Bin Laden came from waterboarding, and I do not mean from a day at the lake.

      I seriously doubt if the search for OBL ever stopped? The CIA was looking for him for years...Obama didn't start the process, but he did give the "ok" to shoot him and bury him at sea to the seals team 6. But as far as starting the search...no he didn't do that. If it hadn't been for pakistan we might have never found him only the CIA knows the entire story and we will never all the storied by the CIA.

        Osama bin Laden had 3300 Americans killed in New York and PA. George Bush got 4400 Americans killed in Iraq. Barack Obama had one Osama bin Laden killed in Pakistan. Now Republicans are actually criticizing Obama. Go figure?

          You right-wing whackers don't even want to acknowledge the fact that President Obama knocked Khadafi out of power,he knocked Mubarack out of power and he had Bin Laden killed after your boy Dubya couldn't decide what he wanted to do.Mitt Romney is a waste of time he wasn't even a manager,he didn't hire people he fired people and down-sized companies. He ran a corporate chop shop,he bought companies stripped them of their assets and sold off the parts. In other words he was a hack.He would have never been in the business if his father hadn't left him an inheritance that was large enough to live off of while he went to colloege, his father was Governor of Michigan and got him a draft deferment so he wouldn't have to serve in the Viet Nam War and he acted like he was a missionary for the Mormon Church to coverup the fact that his father got him a deferment. He is a lying, two faced, manipulating, narcissistic Plutocrat who will destroy our country.

          Me. I'll take the successful businessman. You can have your black junk yard dog.

But rumney is right about one thing, Carter would have given that order....thats because Carter was a better President than rumney could ever dream of being.

                  The liberals will have us think that Bush gave up the search for Binladen and our "Savior" Obama has decided to re-open the search and guess what? Thanks to his administration and his policies, we got him, with no mention that it was the policies and the interrogation techniques put in place by the Bush administration that has lead to the capture of BinLaden. Ofcourse there is no mention of the Bush's administration's role in this, would not expect any acknowledgement from a divisive President. I don't even care about Bush's role as much as the role played by the navy seals who put their lives on the line and are directly responsible for the capture of BinLaden. I wish he would at least acknowledge more their role in this instead of making this all about Obama and his capture. When is it never about Obama?

                                      President Obama is smarter than the top 3 Republicans put together.

                                      He is mentally tough.

                                      He is practical and pragmatic.

                                      He is immune to his radical base, while republican leaders are slaves to theirs.

                                      just look at the two strategies:

                                      Bush scatters our forces between two countries;

                                      Obama focuses our powers on one target;

                                      Republicans know that Democrats are smarter, but now they are also dealing with one who is TOUGHER as well... and they are stunned
