First Thoughts: The politics of bin Laden, one year later

DUE TO TECHNICAL ERROR, FIRST THOUGHTS WAS LATE PUBLISHING.

The bin Laden killing, one year later – how quickly things change … Republicans cry foul that Obama campaign is using the death as a reelection weapon … Foreign policy vs. the economy (it’s still the economy) … Is Obama the Warrior in Chief? … Another veep tryout – this time it’s Romney with New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte. … Gingrich to drop out Wednesday.

Believe it or not, tomorrow marks a year since Osama bin Laden was killed. We wrote then: “While it’s doubtful that Osama bin Laden’s death will have as long of a political impact [as 9/11] -- especially in this fast-changing, short-term memory media landscape -- it will surely shape the contours of next year’s presidential race. … Last night changes everything (for now), but we also know how quickly it can dissipate.” And dissipate it did. The president’s bump – for something that was as big a singular accomplishment that any president could have -- was short-lived, because of the economy and the debt-ceiling fight. It’s a reminder of just how important the economy is that the bump was never as big as it would have been under normal circumstances. (By the way, NBC’s Rock Center went inside the decision making of the killing of bin Laden. Brian Williams previewed his interview with the president on Meet the Press. The full show, with interviews of others that were in the room) airs Wednesday at 9:00 pm ET.

Caption: NBC's Domenico Montanaro discusses the politics of the one year anniversary of the Osama Bin Laden raid, and New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte gets a look as a possible vice president for  Mitt Romney.

*** Playing politics: Republicans are crying foul at the Obama campaign’s touting of the killing (and using it in a campaign video charging that Mitt Romney might not have made the same call. There are two lines of attack: (1) Republicans are trying to minimize the accomplishment, saying anyone would have done it; and (2) They say he’s politicizing everything, including foreign policy. Ed Gillespie, an adviser to the Romney campaign and former Bush adviser said on Meet the Press: “This is one of the reasons President Obama has become one of the most divisive presidents in American history. He took something that was a unifying event … and he’s managed to turn it into a divisive, partisan, political attack. … I think most Americans will see it as a sign of a desperate campaign.” It’s fascinating to watch Democrats try to demagogue foreign policy, the way Republicans do and have done over the years (see Cheney, Dick in 2004). Republicans usually find themselves almost overreacting when Democrats go over the top in their foreign policy attacks. Count on some REALLY heated cable and Twitter rhetoric this week on this topic as the run-up to the bin Laden anniversary kicks in.

President Barack Obama speaks to troops at Third Infantry Division Headquarters at Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Georgia, on April 27, 2012, prior to Obama signing an Executive Order to protect them from deceptive targeting by educational institutions.

*** Warrior in Chief? The Romney campaign has pushed the issue of foreign policy, trying to paint Obama as weak and appeasing (especially when it comes to Iran). The GOP would have liked to paint the picture of Obama as a feckless, weak president, lacking strength. But despite the rhetoric, Obama’s foreign policy has been incredibly muscular. In fact, Peter Bergen of the New America Foundation in the New York Times Sunday Review provocatively casts President Obama as the “Warrior in chief,” ticking off several of Obama’s foreign-policy raids, killings, and use of drones. The death of bin Laden undercut any hopes Republicans had of being able to paint Obama as Jimmy Carter. And he makes the point of this disconnect: “Despite countervailing evidence, most conservatives view the president as some kind of peacenik. From both the right and left, there has been a continuing, dramatic cognitive disconnect between Mr. Obama’s record and the public perception of his leadership….” Make no mistake, had it failed, that’s exactly how he would have been portrayed. Bergen writes that if Romney runs a risk when criticizing Obama on foreign policy. If he tries to portray him as “a typical, weak-on-national-security Democrat,” then “he will very likely trap himself into calling for a war with Iran, which many Americans oppose.”

*** McCain as top foreign-policy attack dog: Taking the lead on the attack, though, is Sen. John McCain, Obama’s 2008 opponent (who also believes Obama hasn’t had courage to act in Syria). McCain, now a Romney surrogate, said Obama’s “diminishing the memory of September 11th,” and accused him of “doing a shameless end-zone dance.” It’s a fine line. McCain clearly doesn’t mind playing this role. He says things Romney couldn’t get away with and it’s something that’s quite beneficial to Romney. If Romney said what McCain did, Romney might get ridiculed. It’s an interesting role that McCain is willing to play. It could be a preview of the role McCain might play going forward in the campaign -- traditional role of VP, but on foreign policy. McCain doesn’t mind going personal with Obama, as he’s demonstrated since 2008. You can try to explain away McCain’s motives all you want, but it could be oddly effective for Romney.

USA Today's Susan Page, The Washington Post's Dan Balz, and The Chicago Tribune's Clarence Page discuss the Romney campaign's accusation that President Obama is politicizing the death of Osama Bin Laden.

*** STILL THE ECONOMY: But for all the talk of foreign policy and how much credit Obama deserves or whether or how he should be touting it, the most important issue this election – as it was a year ago -- remains the economy. It should be like a flashing red sign – IT’S THE ECONOMY, IT’S THE ECONOMY. Jobs will get a fresh look Friday when the latest report comes out. The unemployment rate has been essentially flat for three months. Even though the rate has come down from a high of 10.0%, if the rate continues to appear not to drop very much or the trajectory seems flat, that is going to be a problem for the incumbent president. Watch the trajectory; it will tell you the whole ballgame.

*** Another veep tryout: Today’s another veep tryout with Romney and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte at 10:50 am ET. Though she’s been a senator for just two years, Ayotte served as New Hampshire’s attorney general (she was appointed by Republican Craig Benson in 2003 and RE-appointed by a Democratic governor). The Republican Party’s problems with women have been well documented over the last few months. If Romney is going to pick a woman, the most serious candidate is likely Ayotte. That is, aside from Condoleezza Rice if she wants it, and there’s no indication she does. But the shadow of Palin still looms large over the GOP pick, and the Romney team may be more risk averse because of it. But as GOP 12’s Heinze wrote last week: “Sarah Palin didn't prove that picking a woman doesn't help with women. Palin was simply the wrong woman.” (By the way, over the weekend, NBC’s Alex Moe reported that Newt Gingrich would officially drop out Wednesday.)

*** Obama fundraises with Clinton: There were a couple striking things at the fundraiser with President Clinton this weekend at the home of Terry McAuliffe: (1) How little Romney was mentioned. After a weekend and week of going after Romney personally, last night was more in line with where the Obama campaign was when this campaign first started -- go after the entire GOP. It was more the theme of -- they want to take you back, it’s their failed economic policies on steroids, not the party of Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt; it’s not their Republican Party. (2) This was not an ordinary Obama fundraiser speech. Here, he was trying to follow one of the Democratic Party’s best economic communicators. Obama knew he was on friendly turf, but not the friendliest turf, as he was trying to appeal to Clinton people. One Democratic source who is more of a member of Team Clinton than Team Obama described last night as kind of like a “first date” between Clinton and Obama; For the first time, this person could actually see the two of them starting to bond; It took a while for Clinton to get over 2008 but so far, things have gone well in this courtship. Two more Obama-Clinton fundraisers to go; New York and PROBABLY Hollywood.

*** A way to bring up Seamus: Don’t overlook the fact that the White House used the opportunity of the White House Correspondents Dinner -- when they knew they’d get lighter coverage for what they did – put a story that they’ve struggled to put into the mainstream, quietly trying to do for months, the Seamus story. It was frankly a way to get Seamus out there. Yes, Obama made fun of himself and eating dog, but they’ll take that to get the Seamus story mainlined; They’ve been trying for months.

** Waiting on Lugar’s fate: There are just eight days until the Indiana Senate primary that could see the ouster of the most senior Republican in the Senate. AP today wonders whether Richard Lugar waited too long to brand his opponent. On Friday, the 2008 GOP presidential ticket split its endorsement – John McCain endorsed Lugar; Sarah Palin endorsed his challenger and Tea Party favorite, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock. Mitt Romney said he was staying out of it. A poll aligned with Mourdock showed him up 44-39% Thursday. The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette headline: “Hundreds cheer Mourdock at city rally.” The rally was organized by Tea Party Express, which has played a big role in this race.

It's better to just spread fear and lies (mission accomplished) about terror and tote tragedies ('W used 9/11 clips) in your campaign commercials than it is to actually fight terrorism. If a republican killed Osama, we all know that we would be reminded everyday that "a democrat would never have gotten that done, they are just too soft"! Give me a break

So, Republicans have their undies in a knot because President Obama points to the fact that he got bin Laden while former President Bush couldn't get it done in nearly eight years in office?

The Republicans are saying "Well, anyone would have done it."

So, why didn't their hero Dumbya Bush do it? He certainly had all the resources that President Obama had, and he had sworn to "track down bin Laden and bring him to justice".

The difference here is absolutely crystal clear.

Over the past eleven years, the Republican party has ignored everything else so they could concentrate on giving rich folks more tax breaks and goodies, while doing everything possible to undermine the President of the United States.

Perhaps Mitch McConnell and John Boehner should have spent their energies doing the jobs that we the people pay them to do - instead of spending all their effort on making Barack Obama a one term President.

Without any cooperation from Republicans, the President has constantly been chipping away at the financial mess that Bush/Cheney (along with McConnell and Boehner) inflicted on this country's economy.

Now, Mitt Romney, who was one of the actors in screwing American workers out of their jobs, and out-sourcing work to China and India, comes along as the standard bearer for the Republican party.

As Vice President Joe Biden so succinctly said, the bumper sticker for this year's election reads something like this.

OSAMA BIN LADEN IS DEAD

GENERAL MOTORS IS ALIVE

No thanks to Republicans for either of these facts, as indicated by Romney's having bragged about closing factories and "liking to fire people.

While the Republicans did nothing but lie, cheat, and stonewall.....

The President got it done, and those of us who care about our country - instead of how rich we can make people like the Romneys, appreciate his efforts and successes.

The politics of bin Laden, one year later

And of course, Osama bin Laden, 'Wanted, DEAD, or ALIVE," "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED," were not political plays?

Why is it the GOP believes they are they only ones who can play the game of politics? It's done nationwide here, and everyday there is an election someplace on Earth.

What was Bush's first official act (priority) after 9/11? Getting the Bin Laden family (long time family friends) back to Saudi Arabia safely at taxpayer expense. More than once Bush had the chance, but he wouldn't take the shot, afraid to offend the Bin Ladens by killing their son. Obama had the shot he, he took it. Simple as that. No wonder the GOP is mad, I 'd be embarrassed too.

Mr Obama is politicizing the killing of bin Laden!! We all know such a thing would never be done by the Republicans. Starting a war based on lies and landing on an aircraft carrier in a flight suit was non political. Using our troops as props for 8 years while giving speeches on "the war on terror" was non political. Raising the terror alert before each election was non political. Give me a break!

Yeah, what a brave man Obama is. If Ronald McDonald was told we have located Bin Laden, he would have given the order to kill. What other choice does a president have? BTW, we are still in Afghanistan after Bin Laden is dead for over a year, and Obama is saying we'll be there long after he is out of office.

Ronald McDonald would have given the order but George Bush is less likely. Bush fu*ked up Tora Bora when bin Laden was located.

This gloating crap over the demise of OSB gets old real quick--and it is one big distraction from real issues--so cut the crap already and get down to the business of governing.

The demise of OSB will never get old. We listened to GW claim his mission accomplished. We actually believed that crap for a while.

These Tea-pubs are trying to pretend GW never existed. The incessant whining from the Tea-pubs is what is getting real old. Like it or not, the President was responsible for the mission of OSB demise. It is simply pathetic that a party of nobodies are determined to ignore this major accomplishment just because of some irrational fear of the man.

As for getting down to the business of governing, we all know that is something that is never going to happen until after the November election. The coward old goats have been sitting on their butts for 4 years. They have proven themselves to be unable to be effective in this new 21st Century. They are terrified of new, thinking differently. They need to suck the very life out of this country so they can maintain the status quo.

Although it is well within the Presidents rights to bring attention to his accomplishments, all of them, he really doesn't need to spend too much time on them. We have witnessed for ourselves the utter dysfunction and incompetence of the Tea-pubs. It is impossible for them to claim any accomplishments since all they have been able to do is be the ignorant party of no. They are simply useless.

One last point. This issue of Mittens and Ayotte teaming up is a joke. I'm from NH and Kelly is someone who has absolutely no integrity. She latched onto Palin and went around yapping all the nonsense that got way too many Tea-pubs elected. Lying is a major requirement to be a Tea-pub. Once she did get elected, Palin became a leper. Ayotte is a Freshman Tea-pub and is clueless when it comes to governing and representing her constituents. She's a phony and a liar. I'd like nothing better than to have her suck up to Mittens, get to be the "Woman" VP and watch them both get their butts handed to them come November.

We may be forced to wait another 2 years to unload Ayotte but, the two Tea-pub Congressmen have already received their pink slips. This country can not tolerate incompetence and we have had a belly full of these useless perverts.

I notice the two proudest accomplishments that the Obama gang has been bragging about are the bailout of GM and the assassination of Bin Laden. Not a word about ObamaCare. I wonder why? If that is all they have, they are looking at a repeat of Bush I who was bragging about the Gulf War all the way to a single term. The man who beat him famously said "It's the economy stupid".

We're all glad that bin Laden is dead. We're not happy about spending 10 years in Afghanistan while the rest of the Middle East self-destructs. We're all pissed off about paying $4 bucks a gallon for gas. We're all pissed off about non-citizens being afforded significant rights and benefits at legal citizen's expense. We're not happy that there is a widening gap of racial strife in America. We're not happy that there are few jobs to accommodate our people. We're pissed that the rich from both sides of the aisle could give a @!$%# less about us. We're all pissed off about the constant partisan politics. We need an unconditional leader at the helm. President Obama, as Commander in Chief, with the help of an amazing Navy Seal assault team, brought the criminal to ultimate justice...Get over it! Your guy didn't accomplish anything, except of course, the transfer of wealth and power to the Wall Street 1%. Oh wait, he did also start a war based on lies, and oh yeah, he did also authorize a plane full of Bin-Laden family and friends to escape the country after 9-11...the only plane allowed in the air! Well, I still am elated about the killing of Osama bin Laden! I want more news and talk about it. It never has been covered over and over and over again like it should be, in my opinion. And the Republicans need to join in the celebration. They are the ones out of sync! Along with the President, they should be celebrating OUR COUNTRY'S overall win in this situation. They are showing their typical colors when loser McCain foolishly tries to make light of OUR COUNTRY's major victory in foreign policy. He doesn't look like a victorious athlete (to me) so must not understand that the end zone victory dance after a SPECTACULAR PLAY is something that shows joy and happiness. Believe it or not, foreign policy handling is of major importance to us as a country right now. Our country as a whole has taken pride in our president's win over bin laden and we support and appreciate a good end zone dance to celebrate our Victory!!

REALIT CHECK: we created the Recession together, by starting wars without paying for them, letting speculation (greed) run wild, spending beyond our means at every level, and letting our education and infrastructure slide when we could have done something about it. The Pres inherited an awful situation and it's slowly turning around. Those countries in Europe that adopted austerity measures (marked spending and reduced taxes) are now in NEGATIVE growth (ie double dip recession), while we are in a small but POSITIVE growth phase. Crying that we haven't yet completely recovered instead of pushing forward is childish and anti-patriotic.

The personal bitterness towards Obama in so many of these letters is amazing and disheartening. Be part of the solution - push for training, education, infrastructure and America's future will be brighter. Calling him President Unemployment when he reversed the staggering job losses begun under Bush - while cutting, not raising, government jobs, and while we pay the piper China for our bubble economy, and face the fact that we for years we preferred to outsource jobs so we could enjoy cheaper stuff - is a personal and emotional attack, not a reasoned one

That's the thing. They don't want to unify or push for training/education / infrastructure. They want to gut education, infrastructure or any relief programs to help people who have been knocked down by these economic situations they started. They'd rather promote lower taxes for the rich and higher profit margins for big business.

            Is Obama a Serial Liar?

            By

            Nancy Morgan

Accusing someone of lying is a serious matter. Especially when that someone is the President of the United States. Charges of that nature should be leveled based only on absolute proof of a deliberate statement, intentionally made, whose sole purpose is to deceive. Based on this criterion, President Obama is a liar. Demonstrably so. And a disturbing pattern is emerging that allows for the possibility that our president is a serial liar. Consider:

In just the last month, Obama has made several statements that are just not so. Statements made to the American public that were in direct conflict with known facts.

In April, Obama flatly stated that implementing ObamaCare will

reduce the deficit by $1 trillion . A day later, the Congressional Budget Office reported that statement was 'incorrect,'

pegging the "deficit savings" at $210 billion over 10 years.

In the same April 15 speech, Obama stated that the tax burden on the wealthy is the lowest it has been in 50 years. A simple

            fact-check

proves him wrong. Obama did not correct his false statement and the media didn't either.

            In January of 2009,

Obama stated that it was no longer necessary to kill Osama bin Laden to win the war against al-Qaeda. On May 1, 2011, after the successful raid by Navy Seals that killed bin Laden, Obama told the nation that he made the capture or killing of Osama bin Laden a "top priority,"

and had instructed CIA Chief Leon Panetta to make this job number one. Which statement is correct?

Last week, several of my friends asked me if I believed that bin Laden was really dead. The questions weren't surprising, considering the

mass of misinformation and conflicting accounts of bin Laden's death now emanating from the White House. It appears the question of bin Laden's demise was only settled after al Qaeda issued a statement confirming it.

What does it say about Obama's credibility when the pro-Arab al Jazeera media reports are given more credibility than our own president? Maybe that's why Columbia School of Journalism just awarded al Jazeera

            a journalism prize.

Giving Obama the benefit of the doubt, I'll allow for the possibility that he underwent a drastic change of heart and altered his position on bin Laden. It happens. But when added to the increasing number of statements Obama continues to make that defy reality, the facts, and common sense, I'm more inclined to believe Obama's "mis-statements" are a deliberate effort to deceive the American people.

For example: Obama told the American people that not spending money is

"mortgaging America's future." Who knows, it's possible Obama actually believes this, but anyone with an ounce of common sense knows we can't spend our way out of bankruptcy.

Another blooper: Obama stated that increased drilling will not solve our energy problems. Huh? Again, the media let this statement go unchallenged. (At least Sen. Vitter called him on it

            .)

Obama would have us believe that the big bad oil companies are to blame for our skyrocketing gas prices, despite the fact that every energy decision made by Obama, from with holding drilling permits to increased regulatory burdens being placed on big oil, has

directly resulted in raising the cost of gasoline.

Obama would like us to ignore the fact that his Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, stated in 2008 that he wants to "figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe." Since then, gas prices have doubled. Mission accomplished.

Despite the pain at the pump, Obama's energy dis-information campaign has been quite successful, with a new poll showing that only 9% of Americans believe

that Obama is responsible for rising gas prices.

Tailoring the facts to reflect the most favorable interpretation is an accepted prerogative of the bully pulpit. Every president will of course, spin the news to a certain extent. This is not new. But under Obama, there appears to be a deliberate campaign by the White House and many segments of the government to blatantly deceive the American people. Consider our Department of Homeland Security:

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told Congress last week that the Obama administration is trying to come up with a new yardstick to better reflect the improvements it says it has made. The

            Washington Times correctly noted

that, unable to meet its border goals, the DHS merely moved the goals.

            Arizona Sheriff

            Larry Deaver pretty much confirmed

the Washington Time's report, testifying before Congress that the U.S. Border Patrol has told its agents to stop arresting illegal aliens crossing the border from Mexico to keep the illegal immigration numbers down. In other words, deceive the American people by peddling perception as reality.

Obama and his administration are masters in getting Americans to think with their hearts instead of their brains. After all, emotions are easier to manipulate than facts. And many truths are easier to ignore than acknowledge. But not acknowledging reality, doesn't change the reality. And we ignore reality at our own peril, as we are now finding out on a daily basis.

Though not specified in our Constitution, I believe Americans should have the right to enough information to make informed decisions. Instead, we are being fed a steady stream of outright lies and deliberate misstatements. And when we the people fail to challenge our elected representatives when they lie, we not only enable them, we become complicit. We also forfeit the right to complain when reality hits us in the pocketbook while America

            continues its slide

to the level of a third world country.

bob, you are totally correct. These are all lies told by obammy, the liar-in-chief sitting in the white house. Check the facts. Oh sorry, you're a liberal and you don't let facts stand in the way of your ignorant babble.

You idiot - take a moment and think about what the strategy to get bin Laden might have entailed. Make him think he is safe under a new presidency so it softens his defenses! Fact is they took him out under the orders from PRESIDENT Obama. Who cares what your demand on the office is, you do not have ANY credibility or authority to define it.

              End of discussion.

Wow drkangel, do you feel better? You obviously bow before the patron saint FAUX.

You little gremlins continue to run in circles holding onto the nonsense that started the day President Obama was sworn into office. That act alone is treasonous. You and yours are the American grown Taliban. Determined to take this country down.

Your days are seriously numbered. Personally, I hope all your heads explode when the President is re-elected. We can also celebrate the removal of all the fanatic Teabaggers voted into city and state offices.

This country is determined not to tolerate the sad and hateful group called Teabaggers.

                  JBURNS,

Obama's the one taking the country down...where have you been for the last 3 1/2 years?

And where did you ever get the notion that Teabaggers (better known as Tea Partiers) are a sad and hateful group? A majority of us are retirees--and a happy and gentle group for sure.

Our heads definitely won't explode--know why? Obama is going to be a one-term president.

                  Have a wonderful evening.

Let's all be honest for a minute. If George Bush had killed Bin Laden, then Eric Cantor and every other Republican shill on Talk radio would be advocating putting George Bush's head on Mount Rushmore.

                    That is the truth.

As he should. GWB had 8 years to catch him. Obama did. Why shouldn't he talk about it in his political agenda?

Because it spoils the T-tardican plot to make Obama look bad even if they have to completely screw up our lives doing it.

Awww, what's the matter, GOP? Can't figure out how to spin this one to your advantage? It doesn't matter. Your candidate is going back home in November no matter what he does.

Absurd, absurd, absurd. As if every politician of either party doesn't take advantage of any situation to make a political gesture. Standing on the rubble pile of WTC with a fireman was a PHOTO OP for GWB. It's politics. It's politics and advertising. Brand recognition. It's insane to criticize a politician for being a politician.

Eight long years of war and no Bin Laden. Wars that were not funded by tax dollars. I am not giving the GOP another try EVER.

It will count more than idiots like you, Obama will win in November or we are in for another long slide into poverty and world derision as we move deeper into a world market reality. Anyone remember the results of the first 8 years of this century?

There is a big difference between political gesturing and obscene political pandering. GW was a coward and his wrapping himself in the American flag, all puffed up standing over the bodies of American citizens, is obscene.

All of this is ridiculous. Both republicans and democrats are being hypocritcal on this issue. Democrats complained all over the place when Bush would do anything resembling this and Republicans defended Bush. Now republicans are complaining and democrats are OK with it.

Yes, Obama is quite the hero for getting Bin Laden. All that is required is a short memory. Initially Obama was going to get out of Afghanistan and the war on terror. Only after much dithering did he consent to continue the effort to pursue Bin Laden. An effort initiated by Bush. But now, that the military was successful in their efforts, Obama is the hero for his courageous decision to initiate that effort.

yeah Bush needs all the credit! He gets credit for starting two wars "to find Bin Laden". Turns out he was in neither of those places; and Whoops, Bush forgot to pay for all of the killing he did!
