DUE TO TECHNICAL ERROR, FIRST THOUGHTS WAS LATE PUBLISHING.
The bin Laden killing, one year later – how quickly things change … Republicans cry foul that Obama campaign is using the death as a reelection weapon … Foreign policy vs. the economy (it’s still the economy) … Is Obama the Warrior in Chief? … Another veep tryout – this time it’s Romney with New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte. … Gingrich to drop out Wednesday.
Believe it or not, tomorrow marks a year since Osama bin Laden was killed. We wrote then: “While it’s doubtful that Osama bin Laden’s death will have as long of a political impact [as 9/11] -- especially in this fast-changing, short-term memory media landscape -- it will surely shape the contours of next year’s presidential race. … Last night changes everything (for now), but we also know how quickly it can dissipate.” And dissipate it did. The president’s bump – for something that was as big a singular accomplishment that any president could have -- was short-lived, because of the economy and the debt-ceiling fight. It’s a reminder of just how important the economy is that the bump was never as big as it would have been under normal circumstances. (By the way, NBC’s Rock Center went inside the decision making of the killing of bin Laden. Brian Williams previewed his interview with the president on Meet the Press. The full show, with interviews of others that were in the room) airs Wednesday at 9:00 pm ET.

*** Playing politics: Republicans are crying foul at the Obama campaign’s touting of the killing (and using it in a campaign video charging that Mitt Romney might not have made the same call. There are two lines of attack: (1) Republicans are trying to minimize the accomplishment, saying anyone would have done it; and (2) They say he’s politicizing everything, including foreign policy. Ed Gillespie, an adviser to the Romney campaign and former Bush adviser said on Meet the Press: “This is one of the reasons President Obama has become one of the most divisive presidents in American history. He took something that was a unifying event … and he’s managed to turn it into a divisive, partisan, political attack. … I think most Americans will see it as a sign of a desperate campaign.” It’s fascinating to watch Democrats try to demagogue foreign policy, the way Republicans do and have done over the years (see Cheney, Dick in 2004). Republicans usually find themselves almost overreacting when Democrats go over the top in their foreign policy attacks. Count on some REALLY heated cable and Twitter rhetoric this week on this topic as the run-up to the bin Laden anniversary kicks in.

*** Warrior in Chief? The Romney campaign has pushed the issue of foreign policy, trying to paint Obama as weak and appeasing (especially when it comes to Iran). The GOP would have liked to paint the picture of Obama as a feckless, weak president, lacking strength. But despite the rhetoric, Obama’s foreign policy has been incredibly muscular. In fact, Peter Bergen of the New America Foundation in the New York Times Sunday Review provocatively casts President Obama as the “Warrior in chief,” ticking off several of Obama’s foreign-policy raids, killings, and use of drones. The death of bin Laden undercut any hopes Republicans had of being able to paint Obama as Jimmy Carter. And he makes the point of this disconnect: “Despite countervailing evidence, most conservatives view the president as some kind of peacenik. From both the right and left, there has been a continuing, dramatic cognitive disconnect between Mr. Obama’s record and the public perception of his leadership….” Make no mistake, had it failed, that’s exactly how he would have been portrayed. Bergen writes that if Romney runs a risk when criticizing Obama on foreign policy. If he tries to portray him as “a typical, weak-on-national-security Democrat,” then “he will very likely trap himself into calling for a war with Iran, which many Americans oppose.”
*** McCain as top foreign-policy attack dog: Taking the lead on the attack, though, is Sen. John McCain, Obama’s 2008 opponent (who also believes Obama hasn’t had courage to act in Syria). McCain, now a Romney surrogate, said Obama’s “diminishing the memory of September 11th,” and accused him of “doing a shameless end-zone dance.” It’s a fine line. McCain clearly doesn’t mind playing this role. He says things Romney couldn’t get away with and it’s something that’s quite beneficial to Romney. If Romney said what McCain did, Romney might get ridiculed. It’s an interesting role that McCain is willing to play. It could be a preview of the role McCain might play going forward in the campaign -- traditional role of VP, but on foreign policy. McCain doesn’t mind going personal with Obama, as he’s demonstrated since 2008. You can try to explain away McCain’s motives all you want, but it could be oddly effective for Romney.
USA Today's Susan Page, The Washington Post's Dan Balz, and The Chicago Tribune's Clarence Page discuss the Romney campaign's accusation that President Obama is politicizing the death of Osama Bin Laden.
*** STILL THE ECONOMY: But for all the talk of foreign policy and how much credit Obama deserves or whether or how he should be touting it, the most important issue this election – as it was a year ago -- remains the economy. It should be like a flashing red sign – IT’S THE ECONOMY, IT’S THE ECONOMY. Jobs will get a fresh look Friday when the latest report comes out. The unemployment rate has been essentially flat for three months. Even though the rate has come down from a high of 10.0%, if the rate continues to appear not to drop very much or the trajectory seems flat, that is going to be a problem for the incumbent president. Watch the trajectory; it will tell you the whole ballgame.
*** Another veep tryout: Today’s another veep tryout with Romney and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte at 10:50 am ET. Though she’s been a senator for just two years, Ayotte served as New Hampshire’s attorney general (she was appointed by Republican Craig Benson in 2003 and RE-appointed by a Democratic governor). The Republican Party’s problems with women have been well documented over the last few months. If Romney is going to pick a woman, the most serious candidate is likely Ayotte. That is, aside from Condoleezza Rice if she wants it, and there’s no indication she does. But the shadow of Palin still looms large over the GOP pick, and the Romney team may be more risk averse because of it. But as GOP 12’s Heinze wrote last week: “Sarah Palin didn't prove that picking a woman doesn't help with women. Palin was simply the wrong woman.” (By the way, over the weekend, NBC’s Alex Moe reported that Newt Gingrich would officially drop out Wednesday.)
*** Obama fundraises with Clinton: There were a couple striking things at the fundraiser with President Clinton this weekend at the home of Terry McAuliffe: (1) How little Romney was mentioned. After a weekend and week of going after Romney personally, last night was more in line with where the Obama campaign was when this campaign first started -- go after the entire GOP. It was more the theme of -- they want to take you back, it’s their failed economic policies on steroids, not the party of Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt; it’s not their Republican Party. (2) This was not an ordinary Obama fundraiser speech. Here, he was trying to follow one of the Democratic Party’s best economic communicators. Obama knew he was on friendly turf, but not the friendliest turf, as he was trying to appeal to Clinton people. One Democratic source who is more of a member of Team Clinton than Team Obama described last night as kind of like a “first date” between Clinton and Obama; For the first time, this person could actually see the two of them starting to bond; It took a while for Clinton to get over 2008 but so far, things have gone well in this courtship. Two more Obama-Clinton fundraisers to go; New York and PROBABLY Hollywood.
*** A way to bring up Seamus: Don’t overlook the fact that the White House used the opportunity of the White House Correspondents Dinner -- when they knew they’d get lighter coverage for what they did – put a story that they’ve struggled to put into the mainstream, quietly trying to do for months, the Seamus story. It was frankly a way to get Seamus out there. Yes, Obama made fun of himself and eating dog, but they’ll take that to get the Seamus story mainlined; They’ve been trying for months.
** Waiting on Lugar’s fate: There are just eight days until the Indiana Senate primary that could see the ouster of the most senior Republican in the Senate. AP today wonders whether Richard Lugar waited too long to brand his opponent. On Friday, the 2008 GOP presidential ticket split its endorsement – John McCain endorsed Lugar; Sarah Palin endorsed his challenger and Tea Party favorite, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock. Mitt Romney said he was staying out of it. A poll aligned with Mourdock showed him up 44-39% Thursday. The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette headline: “Hundreds cheer Mourdock at city rally.” The rally was organized by Tea Party Express, which has played a big role in this race.
Countdown to Indiana Senate/Wisconsin recall primaries: 8

John McCain was asked about Obama "spiking the ball in the end zone" over the Bin Laden anniversary last night on O'Reilly. He said "I have had the honor of serving with heros. Heros don't brag." Nuf said.
WOW REALLY??? That is surprising babble from a losing republican. I never would have expected him to say something against the President.
no....that's just the way it is douchenozzle! real heros don't brag and i know how well you would do as a prisoner of war wearing dress's and all for your captors! LOL
Blamo... I'm not sure if McCain was making some intimation that the President was bragging or not. However, I've not heard anything of the sort from the President and in fact, he's specifically stated that the whole anniversary deal needs toning down.
I used to have a lot of respect for Senator McCain, in spite of his personal infidelities, but that guy has jumped the shark and should fade away...
Obama has been running a campaign ad with Bill Clinton speaking touting his role in the Bin Laden affair. Several Seal Team members are slamming him for so doing.
Your whole statement is a blatant lie when and where did you see or hear a statement from seal team six. thats some typical repug s@#$6. made up facts.
no really....i talked to one yesterday they think it's a look what i did moment! really pissed off they are!
Boo-Hoo 2/3 of American would have been thrilled if they had killed each other.
Osuma-Obama the names have the same ring don't you think. Both are muslims, and trying hard to take down the U.S. Wake up Americans, lets get Obama out of this sacred office, and sent him to the deep six, using the Navy Seals to do it.
Obama is an Ass-with a big hole.
bill, really... Drop the the silly muslim nonsense.
If you have something of substance beyond the comedic routine please share...
JeezusismyDog... You really can't hold an intelligent conversation with people like that. If they really had anything to offer they wouldn't be resorting to the schoolyard insults and lies.
Seal Team Six members coming out... Really? If stancanfly had any idea of what character, nobility and sense of duty these guys have he'd know that those remarks would be out of the question. Instead, he has to lie...
I heard Obama can turn water into wine. He also will part the Red Sea and lead us to the promised land. I guarantee if he is re-elected in 4 years we will live in a utopia society where everyone will earn the same amount of money regardless of merit.
We will do this by imposing our will on the job creating rich. Obama will make those rich folk pay there fair share. After all it was not their work that allowed them to be wealthy. It is an unfair system that allowed them to achieve their means. The rich are not hard workers. It was all just given to them, so its our duty as "servants of the people" to take what is rightfully ours so that we can spend it on redundant entitlements and wasteful earmarks.
If you do not want to work, you do not have too. There are plenty of middle class citizens that enjoy paying your way. Vote all the facist, greedy, racist GOP politicians out of office. It is the party of Jackasses that want to keep you enslaved...err uh liberated from the constraints of hard work and responsibility. Yes we can!!!
Starboardside really, more childish sarcasm?
The rich create the jobs? They been getting thier free lunch for sometime now. When are they going to show up with the jobs? Another huge lie by the right.
When you generalize that nearly half the country as lazy it's a go-nowhere remark.
Free lunch are you serious? Not paying their fair share are you serious? Granted business men typically take some of their income via stock holdings, or the may roll it back into their businesses. Do not forget that America is a capitalistic society; thus if one takes an educated risk and decides to start a business they are assuming all risk associated with it. This means that if they choose to take stock (which can be volatile) then that is a calculated risk. If someone starts a business, tax code should encourage this since ultimately small businesses creates jobs. A good recipe for destroying job growth would be to start taxing businesses at a higher rate. This would also encourage business to operate internationally to avoid usurious tax rates.
Also how do we live in a society where we tell the rich that they do not pay their fair share (typically ranging from 20-35% of gross income), while we tell the poor they need not contribute anything to it? If we want true income tax reform we would implement a flat tax. Everyone pays the same!!! Now that would be fair.
Starboard, a flat tax is not "fair." A dollar to a bag lady isn't the same as a dollar to a millionaire. Look up "marginal utility."
Last year, the richest 400 Americans didn't pay "from 20 - 35%". They paid about 17% in federal income tax, according to the CBO and Whorulesamerica.
Many Americans pay no income tax because they are out of work. That happens in a slow recovery from a near depression. Others don't pay because they are just out of school and have low-paying jobs at McDonald's. Others are retired and living on small fixed incomes. Others are stay-at-home Moms with kids to raise. Not many are sitting on lawn chairs drinking wine coolers and freeloading off the government.
However, it's not true that "they need not contribute anything to it." All of them pay taxes in one form or another -- property, rent, state taxes, federal taxes on consumer goods like gasoline, alcohol, and tobacco -- and it's a substantial percentage of federal revenue.
The arguments you're making are the same as the very wealthy are making. The difference is that you seem to admire the rich while most of them have nothing but contempt for you.
You libs really want it both ways, don't you? Biden stated that every Guliani sentence contained "a noun, a verb, and 9/11". A year ago, when his poll numbers were higher, the President said he didn't want to "spike the ball" regarding the death of bin Laden. When ever the Bush Administrationmention Saddam or the capture of any terrorists, the media, libs one and all, would scream "politics". Now he wishes to put the actions of so many other brave men and women into his re-election ads, giving no credit to anyone else. So you must ask: What has changed in this last year to make it okay now and wrong then, except the poll numbers?
You folks will swallow everything that comes from the teleprompter. Bush has been gone for 3 1/2 years yet he is blamed for every mistake and miscue this administration makes, and they are numerous. We were promised a completely transpearant administration, no backroom deals, all bills on the Internet prior to his signing it, no lobbyists in his court, no passing the blame to others in this administration. What we got was business as usual, especially if you're in the Soprano Family. We have how many un-elected and un-confirmed "Czars" beholding to none but the Don, yet he complains about the Supreme Court fulfilling it's Constitutional duty to review news laws. The "Signature piece of legislation", good old Obamacare, was passed in similar backrooms to those at the Bada Bing, and by the same type folks. He complained about "obstructionists Republicans" when he had a VETO PROOF MAJORITY IN BOTH HOUSES. Even the Democrats could not stomach the only budget he put forward.
He demands a civility in political discourse, then makes misleading and untrue comments about Romney for strictly political reasons. He claims families are off limits, then sends his minions out to bash Mrs. Romney. He is a wolf in wolf's clothing, but you folks are too blinded by his light to see it. He is a complete and total charlatan. He has now started an "enemies list" that would have caused a free and un-biased media to question it, just as they did the Nixon enemies list, except they are so far into the tank for Obama is is no longer hidden. But if you dare to call him on any of it you are called a "racists".
When the people finally rise up and remove this person from office in November, the country can finally start to heal, except the Democrats will never accept this defeat.
It was the apparatus of intelligence and recon that had been setup and collected continuously for years before Obama swooping into town that carried and shouldered this accomplishment and built the opportunity to get Bin Laden. And now all of a sudden it has been reduced to 40 minutes by braniac Obama swooping into town that trackked this guy Osama down and it was Obama who found him? What a clown. Obama spent years insulting and attacking Bush for collecting intel and consolodating agencies into homeland security. Obama himself even derided instruments like the Patriot act and called them unconstitutional, except when he gets in office the same act that Obama and democrats vowed to repeat was never removed when Obama was finally president himself refused to eliminate it and signed it permenantly into law. It was Obama who refused to give Generals the troops they needed to effectively fight in Afghanistan. Generals asked for 40000 troops Obama gave them half that amount and refused generals the rest. Obama was the same guy that wanted Guantanamo detainees to get shelter in New York and have privlidges of US citizens and receive tax payer money to be funded, tried and defended in US courts under US civilian laws.
This effort that found and eliminated Osama Bin Laden was an effort of great sacrifice, maticulous devotion and was a continuous understaking that was tediously worked by American operatives and soldiers for over a decade. Some of the very same operatives that Obama derided and attacked as senator Obama. Now he is president and it was all him that swooped into town and single handedly brought an end to Osama Bin Laden? What a joke. But for someone who continually preaches how great he is and all the answers he has when he has never done anything it doesn't surprise me that he would have the gull to hijack this effort and start pointing at his chest with a big self serving smile saying "I did that, I did that" and ACT like he had some spectacular role in the decade of work to get Osama Bin Laden. Reality check: In reality Obama played a very miniscule role in the overall effort that was in place and in motion for years before Obama even started campaigning through billion dollar budgest to tell everyone about how great he is. He was given the materials and data on a silver platter by real Americans that tracked Osama down and Obama was told exactly what to do by military generals. He would have again had to tell generals that he would not act and that would have gotten out and would have hurt Obama more. But it was not Obama's sweat, blood, or data gathering that provided an ooportunity to access Osama Bin Laden. It was Obama's manipulation that hid the body and had it dumped into the water before Americans could verify Osama's death. It was Obama that made sure Osama was given a proper Muslim burial using tax payer funded naval air craft carrier when all the victims never received a swift burial they instead had to be dug out of the world trade tower debris they were crushed under for years. But it was sweat, blood and data gathering by Americans with real jobs that had continued for years before Obama arrived. And it will continue even stronger after he is gone out of there way.
That's right Starboardside, a free lunch. Super-low taxes, tons of loopholes and an ever-widening gap that's driven by their ridiculous salaries and bonuses whether they succeed or fail, ridiculous contracts with obscene golden parachute deals and the pandering by the right to keep them there and suck in their political contributions, off shore tax shelters, etc. Oh ya, and now corporations are people (too funny). All off the backs of lower wages, reduced or eliminated benefits and replacements with part-timers. Paying their fair share is just another right wing lie. But please continue to ignore the facts, you guys are pros at that!
Bob, you're just off the rails with that laundry list of rabid propoganda. Oh woes is us, the media has been paid off. Boo Hoo... Pathetic... Here's a clue, the thinking people in the country won't let him fail. They'll pick him everytime over the pandering right who cares nothing about the working class. Hell, they try and pawn themselves of aas working class. They care about one thing and one thing only, protecting the corporate and the wealthy donors to their coffers and their safety nets of continued employement after they leave Congress. Only you haven't the resources to see what they're doing.
Chip - It's the non-thinking who put him in office. Folks like you who will deride Fox News as "Faux" but then praise NBC and CBS for doctoring stories to fit their, and your, political/editorial slant. You wank about wealthy donors and the GOP, but then you give the teleprompter a pass when he's kissing the rear of the Hollywierd types and taking their money. You can not understand the hypocrisy of damning Wall Street to the far left loons, like you, while opening his pockets to their donations. You wish to damn all Conservatives as crooks while ignoring the teleprompter's strong ties to domestic terrorists, racists clerics and convicted felons.
It would appear that it is you that does not have the capacity to comprehend what is in front of you face. Either that or you are such a strict party hack that you choose to ignore that which does not meet your narrow vision of the world while demanding that all other fall in line with you and yours. Either way, you are wrong on this one.
The dynamics of hatred aren't well understood by a lot of people. It doesn't matter what Romney said or didn't say in 2007 and it doesn't matter that Bush forgot about OBL. Those who see Obama as a socialist intent on destroying America will never give him any credit for OBL.
The twisted beliefs are already in place. "It wasn't Obama who got the job done. All credit goes to the military." "Obama could never have done it without the intel gotten by the Bush administration under torture six years ago." "Obama has no right to politicize it." "It was a no-brainer." Fox News and Rush will give them a dozen other excuses for denying the president any credit.
The GOP already has Obama on the defensive, driving him to deny any "excessive celebration" over the anniversary.
The dynamics have little to do with political reality. The logic is based on morality instead. Since "Obama is evil," he can never do anything good.
Robert - your post proves your point that some do not understand the "dynamics of hatred". You attack those who disagree with you with abandon. You mention the "torture" but seem to forget those three (3) people who were water boarded are alive. Not so much those US Citizens who had missiles shot at them by the teleprompter. You go right after Fox News yet give MSNBC and Olberman a pass. You are the very definition of hate.
when the Japaneese attack Pearl Harbor, did you hear Rosevelet take pride in our American Troups as if He had done it from his wheel chair. This is one aragarant Man we have as president. He should have been a local commedian at the all black soloon. He is a liar, a cheat on his wife, a communist, and a muslim. How many of you support such a cheat not me anymore. I voted for him once, that was the biggest mistake in my life. I am trying to change that now. I regret that I supported such a moran.
bill........... where DID you get all that crap?? RNC talking points? Fox News?? it's SO funny!!
BTW, Karl Rove said on Friday that if the election were held today, Obama would win rather convincingly. I guess many Americans know a LOT more than you do. Interesting you mentioned "black saloon"!! Did yopu betray your racist??
Just remember, he saved the economy, it IS improving DESPITE the GOP's obstruction, unemployment IS going down. ANY tax increases will be ONLY on the wealthy!! And that is a good thing because it means he will have a GOP-proof Congress to pass those bills. THEN he will be able to start cleaning the many mess that the GOP saddled the country with!
Remember, we have a debt crisis that the GOP deliberately created so they could privatize SS and Medicare. You want your SS money to go into the hands of the SAME people who crashed the economy???
As for Robme, see if you like the Gov. Robme portrayed by MA conservatives who eventually became the MA Teaparty!
The Mitt Romney Report http://massresistance.org/romney/
Many of you con't know but Obama is raising taxes next year if reelected double. As you tax accountant? They will tell you. Also the economy is the worst it has ever been. The only people who support this black is the ones on welfare. People who do not want to work. People drawing unemployment, and think because they are sitting on their backsides, and doing nothing they are doing great, doing drugs, killing people, etc. wake up Americans let get rid of this liar and turn the enonomy around where people can have respect again, because they have gone back to work. Vote for Romney and be on the winning ticket.
How can you say things like "the economy is worse than it has ever been"?
One third of the labor force was out of work in the Great Depression.
And "the only ones who support this black is the ones on welfare."
Do you realize how wrong -- and how unAmerican and unChristian -- your beliefs are?
Why do we publicize and "celebrate" the anniversary of the take-down of Bin Laden - might this not make the terrorists more angry and want to retaliate? Let sleeping dogs lie..... Obama does enough bragging as it is - as though he were the great mastermind of the whole operation. I'm just saying..........
bill seriously, get back on the meds. How can any primate take you for real when you post things like that... Oh, and get dikshunaree...
Barack Obama proves he can indeed handle the 3:AM phone call but the ReSuckicans are still unhappy with our Commander in Chief and the method he chose to rid the world of a cockroach that plagued the nations! Could it be nothing more than sour grapes? Now they are whining that the President is spiking the ball in the end-zone, lol. What childish little babies? If the ReSucks had taken bin Laden down there would have been parades everywhere and they know I speak the truth. This is racial and I understand that it is a black eye to all liberal minded whites when I accuse the entire race of being racist. I get the insult, I truly do; but there is no way that I, as a human being myself, can separate the wheat from the chaff. I am incapable of reading a person's heart or their intentions. Those who stand against Pres Obama "seem" to be white and in many cases, just hateful and mean! I hate bullies; and that is the way many of you come across to me, a nation ganging up on one man. A man who is merely a man BUT you find fault in everything he does. No one is always wrong.
If the people go away from President Obama; they will have elected the wrong person and he will be elected for all the wrong reasons. Shooting one's toe to spite one's foot is not at all wise. You have to know by now that Barack Obama has been under attack since the moment the took the oath; so, if you choose Romney as president, it will be to spite the black race as well as a black president. It would be about racism and not based upon the facts. Romney cannot tell the truth, he lies on Pres Obama just to prove a point. "Obama says that Americans are lazy!" Remember that? As you make your way to the polls in November; remember that!

On this glorious anniversary I want to personally take this opportunity to thank our Commander in Chief and President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. He commanded our troops to plan and carry out a daring raid to annihilate America's number one enemy, Osama Bin Laden. Repubicans, eat your hearts out! Your idiots started two wars that cost thousands of American lives and trillions of American dollars to accomplish absolutely nothing!
President Obama made the statement about not spiking the ball to prevent revenge attacks in Pakistan not to protect republicans from the political consequences of there own ineptitude.
