Subscribe to RSSWASHINGTON-- Focusing tightly on their campaign's economy-first message, a pair of Mitt Romney's top advisers on Saturday dismissed recent efforts by the president to reach out to younger voters and the so-called "likability gap" between President Barack Obama and the presumptive GOP nominee with a simple argument: The 2012 election is not a popularity contest.
"This election is not going to be about who's cooler," Romney senior adviser Peter Flaherty said at a Washington Post Live Newsmaker Forum. "The question is going to be, who do you trust to run the economy?"
Eric Fehrnstrom, another top Romney adviser, also criticized Obama for his appearance earlier this week on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," on the University of North Carolina campus, where the president "Slow Jammed the News." Fehrnstrom said the president's performace was "off key," and showed inappropriate levity about an issue - the possible doubling of student loan interest rates - that deserved to be taken more seriously.
"You won't see the governor slow jam the news," Fehrnstrom said, not discounting the possibility Romney could appear on more late-night talk shows or even "Saturday Night Live," thanks to the ability of those shows to reach voters who normally don't follow politics as closely.
And while Fehrnstrom predicted Americans would "fall in love with" Ann and Mitt Romney as the election progressed, the advisers' downplaying of personal popularity in favor of an economic-competency argument is consistent with Romney's own recent comments on the stump.
"Even if you like Barack Obama, we can't afford Barack Obama," Romney said at a campaign event in North Carolina on Wednesday.
Romney's advisers also alluded to that trip to North Carolina - and other recent campaign events in swing states - as illustrative of how they see the electoral map playing out in November.
"There are a handful of states that we view as key to the outcome," Fehnrstrom said, in response to a question from the forum's moderator, The Washington Post's Dan Balz. While declining to lay out a specific "path to victory," as the Obama campaign has done, Fehrnstrom said the campaign's geographical focuses would not be a surprise to anyone who has followed their recent movements, and that New Hampshire, Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Virginia and North Carolina were all places where "the campaign will be waged."
Asked if there was any one reliably Democratic state that could be moved into the Romney column this fall, Fehrnstrom predicted that Michigan, where the former Massachusetts governor was born and raised, could flip from blue to red. They're familiar with the Romney "brand" there, Fehrnstrom said.

Romney committed voter fraud
Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney has survived the heated GOP nominating contest so far without attracting significant attention to what may become a general election issue: allegations that he committed voter fraud in 2010. In January 2010 the former Massachusetts governor proudly cast a ballot for Republican Scott Brown in the special election to replace the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. He didn’t own property in the state at the time, and had registered to vote listing his son’s unfinished basement as his residence. Massachusetts law defines a residence for voter registration purposes as “where a person dwells and which is the center of his domestic, social, and civil life.” Anyone found guilty of committing voter fraud faces up to five years behind bars and a fine of $10,000.
The issue was first raised last year, after long-shot GOP candidate Fred Karger traveled to Romney’s former community of Belmont and interviewed members of his former church — who informed Karger that the Romneys had moved — and their former realtor, who told him, “Oh, they moved to California.” Additionally, Karger claimed that Ann Romney told him that the couple lived in California.
Is that the same ten thousand he was willing to bet. We know he got the ten thousand on him.
I have not seen or heard anything from Romney that would instill in me that he knows what he is talking about. He reminds me of Woody Allen's "Zelig" or Peter Sellers in "Being There" a a hollow man who drifts through life without understanding or ability.
What has Romney said about fixing the economy other than the Republican Party line of reducing government and taxes? If those old Republican bromides worked, we would never had the great recession that we are still suffering under. Financially, the U S Government is in a big financial hole caused by the trickle down Republican policies.
Elect Romney but beware that he is a hollow man. He is nothing but a scarecrow in a field of weeds.

Do you think that selling the country out by the right wing to corporate interests, who are the very ones who have sent the jobs overseas for the their profit margin and who want to destroy the working class in this country for their profit margin, is a a good thing, honest jo? Obama needs the get re-elected and the the Dems need to take the House and keep the Senate. That way, the jobs might not go overseas as fast as they have done and they might not get the tax breaks that facilitate them sending the jobs off shore anymore.
You have selective memory or something, not sure what to call but you leave a whole lot out of the what Congress has done and wants to continue to do.
For Mittens the election is all about how much he can claim credit for what he didn't do, hide the things that he did, and try to pass himself off as a real, live boy! In other words, LIE!

Willard has to release his birth certificate and tax returns, then I will consider it.
On second thought, I don't really care about the college transcripts. Willard graduated from Harvard Cum Laude and President Obama graduated from Harvard Magna Cum Laude. Nothing to see there but straight 'A's for both.
It's a good thing Romney isn't hip to "Cool" 'cause he's about as far from cool as one can get.
Any hourly workers out there should be concerned because he wants to get rid of the Bacon-Davis law that gives time and a half for overtime work after forty hours.
