WASHINGTON-- Focusing tightly on their campaign's economy-first message, a pair of Mitt Romney's top advisers on Saturday dismissed recent efforts by the president to reach out to younger voters and the so-called "likability gap" between President Barack Obama and the presumptive GOP nominee with a simple argument: The 2012 election is not a popularity contest.
"This election is not going to be about who's cooler," Romney senior adviser Peter Flaherty said at a Washington Post Live Newsmaker Forum. "The question is going to be, who do you trust to run the economy?"
Eric Fehrnstrom, another top Romney adviser, also criticized Obama for his appearance earlier this week on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," on the University of North Carolina campus, where the president "Slow Jammed the News." Fehrnstrom said the president's performace was "off key," and showed inappropriate levity about an issue - the possible doubling of student loan interest rates - that deserved to be taken more seriously.
"You won't see the governor slow jam the news," Fehrnstrom said, not discounting the possibility Romney could appear on more late-night talk shows or even "Saturday Night Live," thanks to the ability of those shows to reach voters who normally don't follow politics as closely.
And while Fehrnstrom predicted Americans would "fall in love with" Ann and Mitt Romney as the election progressed, the advisers' downplaying of personal popularity in favor of an economic-competency argument is consistent with Romney's own recent comments on the stump.
"Even if you like Barack Obama, we can't afford Barack Obama," Romney said at a campaign event in North Carolina on Wednesday.
Romney's advisers also alluded to that trip to North Carolina - and other recent campaign events in swing states - as illustrative of how they see the electoral map playing out in November.
"There are a handful of states that we view as key to the outcome," Fehnrstrom said, in response to a question from the forum's moderator, The Washington Post's Dan Balz. While declining to lay out a specific "path to victory," as the Obama campaign has done, Fehrnstrom said the campaign's geographical focuses would not be a surprise to anyone who has followed their recent movements, and that New Hampshire, Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Virginia and North Carolina were all places where "the campaign will be waged."
Asked if there was any one reliably Democratic state that could be moved into the Romney column this fall, Fehrnstrom predicted that Michigan, where the former Massachusetts governor was born and raised, could flip from blue to red. They're familiar with the Romney "brand" there, Fehrnstrom said.

It is about the economy! When it comes to coolness, Romney has been trumped by his own comments and actions during the primary. any and all attempts to make himself or others trying to make it seem that Romney is cool will not work on the public. American's do not want a loser in the White House and will re-elect president Obama for another four years. Electing Romney would take back to pre-Bush restrictions and allow rampant money-making schemes at the expense of the 99%-ers. It's the economy stupid! It is the economy that makes America great! People from all over the world want to live here. The economy we're in is the 112th Congress' economy! All legislation and taxation is generated by the Congress. The president is the administrative segment and then there is the judicial. The 112th Congress holds payroll taxation hostage, holds debt ceiling hostage, de-funds women's health issues hostage and wants to de-regulate the banking industry. The president has very little to do with the economy as is repeatedly lied about by the TEA-Republican. Everyone can speculate who would do what ad infinitum but the November vote will tell the real story who is more apt to do what the America people want done. Vote Obama! Vote Straight Democratic ticket!
Likely, I will do EXACTLY that. I am so pissed at Boner and his gang - THIS Republican is fed up.
Hey someone else who prefers boner!
I don't know how much I'd blame Boehner. He's stuck in a bad position. For a year and a half he's been wrangling a herd of buffalo on the right who are more than eager to continue their stampede. That he's held the party together as well as he has is a little miracle.
I will follow President Obama's advice. In Febuary, 2009 President Obama told Today Show host Matt Lauer. "I will be held accountable. I’ve got four years and a year form now, I think people are going to see that we’re starting to make some progress, but there’s still going to be some pain out there. If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”
Feb. 2010 there was no progress. Now his 3 years are up.
Too bad Obama will not follow his own advice. He has failed miserably so according to his words, he should accept being a one term president. So much for that, he is going to keep on going and finish the job that he started until it leads to the destruction of our country! Unless the voters wise up and stop this train wreck this country will be doomed to resemble Greece! There will be no turning back. Please vote with your heads! Romney 2013!
Dee, the job of President is to ensure that the policies enacted by Congress are faithfully executed. (It is called the Executive Branch for a reason!) So, how has Obama failed miserably? Maybe the real problem is the House of Representatives and the fillibuster crazy Senate Republicans aren't adopting policies because they are too busy trying to politically destroy an honestly elected President.
He had 2 years of full control part of which was filibuster Prof. and in that time all the democrats did was get unemployment up to 10 %. Thank you GOP for stopping as much as you have,
Dee
You should try to understand Greece before you consign the US to its fate. Like the Tea Party and the Whiskey Rebellion crowd, the Greeks just don't want to pay taxes, so they don't.
Tax evasion is a national sport and pastime. No government can be solvent without a source of revenue.
And quit whining about the deficit until you take a look at what the economic collapse did to Federal revenue between 2007 and 2009. Does not take a Phd. to understand that when revenue stops (you are laid off) and your kids are sick, deficits be damned, you are taking them to the doctor.
Dee, you got spunk. Do a little research and get back to us.
If the Republicans are to be congratulated for stopping everything, how then can Republicans blame Obama for not being effective?
What is the excuse for being ineffective in his first 2 years?
How are you defining "ineffective"? Since Obama's election, GDP has risen every quarter except for the first. It's easily Googled.
This election is about the Republican Party, Karl Rove, and the limits the big lie theory of governance.
Romney just reminds me of a big "White French Poodle " !
GOP says: It's all about the economy and jobs
Translation: It's all about restricting women's rights, restricting voting rights, anti abortion, anti gay, anti union, tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations, scraping health care reform, eliminating EPA, Board of Ed., ending Medicare/Medicaid, killing any type of social programs, getting rid of Social Security, and getting rid of every single piece of regulation that restrict companies from polluting, poisoning, and pillaging anything and everything.
Wow, I can see how msnbc has been brainwashing you to believe this nonsense. This could not be farther from the truth. Most of what you write about is fiction concocted by Obama and the media to make you believe these things about the GOP. What do you think the Democrats believe it is all about because it sure as hell does not feel like it is about the economy and jobs. What has Obama done lately about the ecomony and jobs when he is not campaigning or focusing on Healthcare for the past 3 1/2 years.
Sorry, I don't debate with Fox watchers - not worth the effort since facts and truth can't overcome the damaged to one's brain due to overexposure to that trash
Dee, the Republicans, including Romney, opposed Obama's plan to finance General Motors and its suppliers. Obama pressed ahead and saved tens of thousands of jobs - and most of the loaned money has been repaid in cash and the balance in now GM stock owned by the US Treasury.
What Republican bill has created as many jobs as Obama saved with the GM plan?
Dee- Seriously? We are brainwashed? All we have to do is pay attention to what is happening right now.
In many states the only they are passing are anti women bills, nothings says jobs like trans-vaginal probes. Person-hood bills, that want to give right's to a fertilized egg, I do want to know if there are job openings for people to go around collecting the charts that all women will have to start, so the state can keep track of her periods!
The Ryan plan that Romney thinks is "marvelous" cuts programs for the elderly and poor, cut's more tax's for the rich.
The Ryan plan also grows the debt, what is good about that.
The truth is that the GOP has nothing new to offer, just hate, fear and blaming democrats for all the woe's of the country, many of the woe's are GOP ideas such as MANDATES, it was a good idea before the President implemented it!
The truth is Romney isn't cool, doesn't have any viable plans, he is rich, stiff, stuffy and more comfortable in a country club setting. He is jealous because our President is cool, and is comfortable in any setting, and can carry a tune!
Obama/Biden 2012 Al Green I'm so in love with you!
Bruce, stop listening to Comrade Obama's marxist double speak. He sold GM to
China
Where are the bulk of GM sales and their assembly plants? China, aided and abetted by who? Obama
GM expansion in China a threat to U.S. jobs?
As CBS News business and economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis reported from Shanghai, American cars are more popular than ever in China, and U.S. automakers sell more cars there than anywhere else in the world. And while that's good news for American car companies, it makes many question what it will mean for American jobs.
If you were to visit General Motors in Shanghai, you'd find a lot of what you would in Detroit
The plant, says David Gibbons, executive director of manufacturing for GM in Shanghai, is "very similar. The processes are the same, the systems are the same, the quality systems are the same. Really, the only difference is the employees."
With its Chinese partner, Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corp., GM manufactures Buicks, Chevys and Cadillacs in China -- for the Chinese market -- and employs more than 13,000 people throughout the country.
That number is set to grow, thanks to a just-announced deal to develop and build, with SAIC, the next generation of electric cars in China.
On Wednesday, GM opened an advanced technology center in Shanghai meant to help it design lighter, safer and more efficient cars for a market that has proven crucial to its survival. The facility will include a lab devoted to developing new battery cells for EVs.
And GM and General Electric agreed Thursday on a pilot installation of electric vehicle charging stations in Shanghai, the latest step in the automaker's plan to develop infrastructure in China to support sales of its Chevrolet Volt electric car.
China is, says Gibbons, "obviously very important for GM. This is a strong growth market. It's a growth industry. We're here in China to produce cars for the local market."
China is seen as a promising market for electric vehicles because of its keenness on limiting its dependence on costly imports of crude oil and reducing severe pollution from auto emissions.
The government has made development of so-called "new energy" vehicles a key part of its current five-year economic plan, promising subsidies and billions of dollars in new investments.
Last year, Chinese consumers bought 16.6 million cars -- 5 million more than the number sold in the entire U.S., according to J.D. Power and Associates.
http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-500173_162-20110006.html
Obama and GM have moved the Volt production to CHINA
General Motors agreed in Shanghai today to develop an electric vehicle platform with longtime Chinese partner SAIC. It effectively moves GM's future electric vehicle development to China. Unclear is whether this would also lead to assembly of future EVs for the U.S. market in China.

Larry, the amount of manufacturing in China by American firms is very disturbing. In fact the only thing American about Apple Computer is its address. Having said that, however, the GM effort was in all likelihood the lessor of two evils and the results as of today are wonderful for those middle class Americans who would have been on the street without some government help. And after all, isn't helping Americans what government is supposed to do?
Bruce,
Why did Ford recover WITHOUT Federal assistance?
Larry, do some research for a change. Ford was in trouble sooner and got help sooner than the others, from the Fed at least. Ford also didn't let things get quite so bad before they looked for help, and, since it was earlier, the entire banking system had not yet frozen up solid thanks to the rightwingnut@!$%#tard-induced recession.
Now, go rewrite some history, like a good little LibR-Tardian.
I think it is almost universally true that people like some degree of "cool" in their heroes,..and remember there are a lot of different kinds of cool.
The GOP are such shameless hypocrites and spin doctors. GW Bush had his Texas cowboy cool,...Reagan had an actor's brand of cool. A lot of "cool" is a manifestation of confidence,...knowing who you are,...and "believing" what you say. This is where Mitt Romney has his problem.
All the humor about him underlines how plastic and insincere he is. He is trying "desperately" to generate likability with the electorate,...and it is clear that he knows if he is too honest about who he is,...a rich,...out-of-touch,.....elitist,....with quite possibly extremereligious views,....it won'tgoover well, so he doesn't come across "cool" and collected.
Romney feels FALSE. False is guilty,...and "guilty feelings got no rhythm".
No rhythm >>> no cool. I'm not talking groovy, jazzy rhythm,...think of it more as a lie detector,...a"tell",....body language that let's you know what someone is thinking.
Secondly,...the election IS about the economy, and Romney fails even worsein this respect, because when the people talk about "the economy" they are not simply about stimulating business investment, by pushing more of the burden on the middle class.
Romney's solutions for the economy do not and will not have anything to do with strengthening the middle class.
If you do care about the economy,...from the point of view of the working class >>>>ROMNEY IS NOT YOUR MAN.
Vote Barack Obama 2012.
"This election is not going to be about who's cooler," Romney senior adviser Peter Flaherty said at a Washington Post Live Newsmaker Forum. "The question is going to be, who do you trust to run the economy?"
AND THE WINNER, ON BOTH COUNTS IS........... OBAMA!
WVDawg, I don't know if you watch a lot of television or read the paper but if you paid attention to the polls, if there is one thing Romney consistently wins on against Obama is the people's trust for Romney in handling of the economy!
He has done so much to help the economy so far. Opps, no he hasn't never mind
Dee, can't wait for the debates when Romney will have to tell the world that, yes he is, in fact, a true believer of trickle down economics. 'The richer the rich get, the better off we all will be, and I'm one of the 'we'. And he'll try to say it with a straight face.
Bruce, One thing I agree with you. I, as well can not wait until Romney debates with Obama and Obama will have to answer to Mitt Romney for his pathetic record. I would particularly love to see Obama answer to Romney on what it takes to create jobs!
Trickle down is better than cronyism economics that Obama practices
Dee, I am a believer that government should not be in the job creating business. The role of government is to take care that the society is being fairly treated by business by creating a level playing field and regulating the game.
I am also a believer that unregulated anything will soon get out of control through sheer human weaknesses.
What is the underlying cause of economic downturns, generally, is some sector of society not doing its share for the other sectors. Derivatives, phony mortgages, oil price manipulation, etc. usually profit someone for awhile then we all pay for their profits one way or another.
I too am anxious to listen to the debates. I believe Romney's platitudes have better be more sharpy honed beforehand.
Boys and girls, the Republican Party was once honorable. Then about 100 years after the end of the Civil War, it began a decline, first by becoming the new home of segregationist Dixiecrats and digging up Richard Nixon. They also raised dirty political tricks invented by Lee Atwater and others (Lee actually repented) to an art form worthy of Nazi Germany. Today's perpetrators (or 'trators) like Rush Limbaugh the dropout and Carl Rove, the ego crammed into a little man are Republican "leaders". Glenn Beck is just insane.
Recently, subcultures dwelling in the basement of the base have pulled the party down to the lunatic right which calls itself conservative, but is actually a pseudo conservative, pseudo intellectual pod of escapees from the Wonderland Tea Party and Dr. Hyde's school for sedition. The government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" is accused of being the enemy of the people. 95% of citizens no longer qualify as the people, due to lack of net worth, in Republican culture.
I was Republican until the Nixon nomination, when I voted for the only decent Republican running, John B. Anderson. Political parties are for politicians and people with either a deep seated longing to be somebody or are intellectually unfit to make their own inquiries, assess facts, and make decisions without the false framework of predetermined ideology. It also helps to have a moral compass during the journey.
The party of Lincoln has morphed into the party of John Wilkes Booth, it would seem. The big tent has all exits and no entrance for the sane.
Affinity, thanks for everything you wrote. I was a Anderson voter, as well. I didn't think Carter, had the guts for fighting, even though I like him. Regan, I never liked, after the way he ruined California, and what he did during the house un-american days to the people in the actors union. Regan, was the begining of the end of the Republican party. The party of Lincoln, and my favorite Eisenhower, is dead and gone. In its place is a party of selfish, mean, pshociopaths, who only care about power, money and to hell with the country and the rest of us.
Actually, the intellectual inspiration for the GOP/TP is the Whiskey Rebellion which challenged George Washington's authority to lead the country and said hell no to paying taxes.
Someone should tell Romney that it isn't cool for his wife to have two Cadillacs and an elevator garage. It's also not believable or cool to be a multi-millionaire and wear jeans. Who does he think he's fooling?
So I guess you do not believe it is cool to have the American dream and reap the benefits from it. I guess if someone is successful and made a lot of money, they should not "have" things. Are you kidding? If you feel this way, maybe you should move to Europe or better yet Greece. See how that works for you.
Bruce like all good little marxists despises those who succeed in life.
No, Dee, that's not the point at all. In my profession, designing and engineering industrial projects, I work with many wealthy people and many of whom rose from modest means to uberwealthy. I admire them for their foresight, their nerve and their integrity.
If any of these people were to seek office they would not wear jeans. They all have at least one thing in common: They know who they are and don't alter their behaviour to please others.
And they are smart enough that if they were to run for Presdient of the United States, they wouldn't buy two Cadillacs for a spouse.
Larry, do you mind if I clip your comment and take it to my golf club? The other members would get a hoot!
no problem, you think marxists don't play golf?
Some of the best private golf clubs in the world are in China
Bruce, I guess you are saying Mitt Romney should only wear suits all the time and can not be seen in jeans because he is wealthy? That is ridiculous. Romney has made no secret about his wealth on the campaign trail, as a matter of fact he has said numerous times he has embraced it and will not apologize for his wealth. There are many wealthy people I know who are not in suits every day, they wear jeans and dress casual just like the rest of us. As far as I am concerned, Romney has the right to buy as many cadillacs as he wants because he can. You are the one who would believe an honorable man should be himself and you say Romney isn't. So you are a hypocrite if you say Romney should tone down his spending on material things such as cars because he is running for office and needs to appear as a more modest person. As far as I am concerned, he is being himself, embracing it and not apologizing for it. Good for him!!
Bruce, if u won $200M from playing the Lottery, based on what u posted, then u would be a scumbag hypocrite phony, riding around in your new Ferrari. Don't forget, we never want to see u in blue jeans either. What a jerk.
Joe, that's my point - I wouldn't be driving around in a Ferrari. I would be driving around in my Jaguar that I already own.
Look guys, I'm not an impoverished liberal. I am a very comfortable liberal. And Larry, yes China is developing a golf industry and their government has hired people like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer to help them design the few courses they have. Whether they are private or not I don't know. As for being among the best in the world - hardly.
So I guess we are to take it that Mitt's advisers FINALLY told him that he's not cool? I hope he didn't take it badly.
the election is about who is most qualified overall, not just who can best improve the economy. A candidate can be an expert with improving the economy but they can suck at everything else.
Well said. What people fail to remember is that a President can be a genius at everything and propose to Congress truly breathtaking initiatives. but it is up to Congress to enact laws.
Obama could be the equal of the greatest capitalists and financiers in world history and this Congress would still ignore his legislative proposals.
I don't think the issue is Mitt Romney's demeaner. He comes across badly in this election because he's been running as someone he's not. People can sense it - thus the conservatives are put off & skeptical, rightly so. We know who he is here in MA - a pretty middle to left Republican who is shifting with the wind to finally reach his desperate goal to be president.
Linda,I will take a middle of the road Republican like Romney who has the capacity to work with both parties as he has successfully done in Massachussets as Governor with an 85% Democratic legislature over a far left liberal as Obama whose ideology and his refusal to work with both parties surpass the needs of this country.
I think the most ridiculious thing that Romney's campaign manager, said was the part about they would get Michigian, because Romneys from there. That was a laugh, all the Obama people have to do, is play the video of Romney, saying how the auto industry should just be allowed, to go bankrupt. He said as how thats how the market works. If that had happened, then the Republicons, would have been really happy, about having a million people out of work. Then they could have blamed, something else on Obama./
So you worship the marxist Obama who sold GM & Chrysler to China and Italy?
larry the corporation man y'all are losing this time around you fooled people in Wisconsin and the country of tea party corporations .its not going to work this time around.
Larry, nearly every dime that went to keep GM and its suppliers going has been repaid, and the balance is currently in GM stock held by the U.S. Treasury.
elvis and bruce- I see neither of you wants to admit that GM is shifting their jobs to China including their EV cars.
and bruce my next post will show you that Obama has lied to you about GM repaying it's debt.
General Motors Will Never Repay Taxpayers
Obama's spin on GM's latest profit report is pure baloney
Shikha Dalmia | May 24, 2011
No sooner had GM made its announcement than Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne dashed off a stinging rebuke to naysayers (like me) who had dared doubt the wisdom of the bailout. Likewise, the auto czar Ron Bloom credited the turnaround to the president’s “tough love” approach.
No doubt, $3.2 billion is a big number. But an even bigger number is $60 billion. That’s what this administration and the last one together sank into GM (not to mention another $20 billion or so they dumped into Chrysler). When President Obama gave GM this money, he insisted that it was not a handout but an “investment” that would cost taxpayers “not a dime.”
But if there was ever any doubt that this wasn’t going to happen, this earning report dispels it.
For starters, included in the $3.2 billion figure is the net $1.5 billion that the company generated from the one-time sale of Delphi, its auto parts supplier, and Ally Financial, its financial arm. Subtract that, and its performance looks much less impressive, especially compared to its rival Ford that really didn’t receive a dime from taxpayers yet made $2.6 billion last quarter—or nearly a billion more than GM.
But cold, hard cash is not the only help that GM got. Usually when companies declare bankruptcy, their tax liabilities increase since they have no more losses to write off. But GM got Uncle Sam’s special bankruptcy package that allows it write off up to $45 billion of old losses going forward. That puts its total bailout at up to $75 billion*. Even that’s not all. The Treasury gave GM $10 billion of the $60 billion as a loan; the rest was through the purchase of equity. (It has more or less paid back the loan.)
The equity means two things: One, GM has zero interest payments, something that gives it a distinct advantage over competitors. Ford, by contrast, had to pay $251 million in debt-service costs. Despite this, GM’s real per vehicle margin was over $1,000 less than Ford’s, thanks to the heavy incentives it was forced to give buyers. (If the administration can call this success, can it please call me the next American Idol?)
And two, taxpayers have no guaranteed return as they would have with a loan. Therefore, market valuation of GM’s stock will determine what they will recover. They got back $20 billion when the Treasury sold half of its equity when GM floated its first post-bankruptcy IPO in December. But that still leaves a $30 billion shortfall (excluding the $45 billion tax break). To get this back, the federal government would have to sell its remaining 365 million shares—about 26.5 percent of company equity—for about $55 per share. But after GM posted its latest earnings report, its stock price dropped to $31, a few dollars below even its IPO price of $33.
Bloomberg’s survey of 21 auto analysts put the average projected price for GM at $42.85 per share a year from now. This means that, outside of miracle, taxpayers will lose anywhere from $13 to $19 billion on their principal and another $15 billion on taxes for a grand total of up to $28 to $34 billion* in losses. And that’s just for GM. Chrysler is whole different—and equally sordid—story. Even Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner acknowledged last month: “We’re going to lose money in the auto industry.”
http://reason.com/archives/2011/05/24/general-motors-will-never-repa
current price of GM stock is $23.57 (4/27/12)
Etch O Sketch Mittens is unelectable. Sadly, nobody told Mittens that everything he says is searchable on the Internet and his hourly flip flops are captured for all to see. Obama will eviscerate him on that alone.
In 2008 Romney told an east Michigan audience that, if elected, he would bring back the American automobile industry like never before. Oops, up popped a different audience for a different Romney. Ann Romney says that, after six years of running, it's her husbands turn to be president. Dip her pigtail into the inkwell. Where are the grownups?
But see, besides all the things he did not get in the last 4 years, Dumbama did not get this either. He is just too fu.king stupid!
Dumbama?
You must be very popular at parties with these clever quips
If the republicans are such good leaders..then why have they not created jobs remember the last election (jobs) we will create?if you elect us in
Elvis, lets compare
Bush -=average unemployment rate 5.5%
Obama= average unemployment rate 8.6%
Bush deficit high 460 billion plus 1/2 of the TARP (balance spent after Obama took office) 810 billion
Obama deficit high 1.6 Trillion never lower than 1.3 trillion
Bush 1st 4 years gained 2 million more Americans working than when he took office
Obama 1st 4 years 2 million FEWER Americans working than when he took office.
yes money that was not really there remember?that did create jobs until wammo the cat was pulled from the bag remember
Larry, you're right about the "average" unemployment rate under Bush being about 5.5%. But average figures can be misleading.
When Bush took office, the rate was about 4% and by the time he left it was about 8% -- and skyrocketing.
In the first few months of Obama's term -- before he could have any effect on it -- the rate rose to more than 10%.
The jobs stimulus bill managed to bring it down to about where it is now (I think your estimate of 8.6% may be a bit high). In 2010, a lot of Tea Party types were swept into the legislature and the figure has been stuck at about 8.2% since then,.
You must have gotten your financial facts from Fox - Bush added over 6 Trillion to the debt - here's a hint, you can't fund two wars using supplemental budget to keep it out of the official budget numbers! Bush was hemorrhaging over 400,000 - 700,000 jobs per month over the last 12 months of his tenure, but why let facts get in your way, eh!
Larry, the month before President Bush got on his horse and headed out of town, 700,000 Americans lost their jobs and it got worse from there.
"Here, Mr. Obama, are the keys to the White House. The prior resident left a few untidy issues lying around, but with the patriotic assistance of Congress, you'll soon straighten it all out."
Elvis,
Do you mean the election of 2010? If so unemployment has droped from 9.8% to 8.2% since the election.
hahaha you want credit now huh
Arizona-Buckeye
Where are you getting your figures from? The US treasury has a website that shows the Debt to the penny. In the 8 years under Bush it went up 4,899,100,310,608.36. Disgusting but less than the 4,997,470,561,563.80 that it has gone up in 3+ years of Obama
Robert, wrong again.
When Bush took office, we were in the early part of the Clinton Recession but the unemployment had not begun yet. The rate was 4.20% when Bush took office. The combined effects of the recession and 9/11 pushed the rate to 5.8% at it's highest point in 2003.
When Obama took office the rate was 7.7%
http://www.multpl.com/unemployment/table
Interestingly, the economy was in great shape until the Democrats regained control of Congress in 2007.
Fish - you have to pay for those two wars and Bush and his band of criminals used the supplemental budget to finance those wars and those do not appear in the administrative budget but it does go against the deficit.
AB,
The US Tresuary figures that I gave you are actual debt not budget. Obama has created more debt in less than half the time than Bush.
why would Romney wait to get elected to create jobs...if he would create jobs would that help him . like right now..you would get credit you do know that right
Romney can't create jobs right now for two main reasons.
(1) He doesn't hold any office.
(2) He doesn't know how.
hahaha he is a corporation man..one who hires people right..he is a business man..he himself said he knows how to hire people
Romney is a business man he is worth billions..the government is not standing in his way to hire people right now...so tell me tea party are there any American workers Romney has hired right now that are working on his dime..like a factory or some 711 stores?.....I will be waiting for your comment don't wait until I'm gone like y'all always do
Can I have your autograph? Bring a box of checks too.
yep i always seem to shut them up...and they always say I'm the dumb one.do you get it
Elvis, Romney is focusing on his campaign right now for President like Obama has been doing for the past 3 years. Romney has had a history of creating jobs. I would be more concerned about what our current President has done or is doing to create jobs. I will take a guess on that. Nothing!
Dee you did not answer me..he has been a business man when he poop out of his mommy..so where is his factory located..you can run for office..any time you want and still have a business going on at the same time..you mean he cant do two things at one time.like care for American workers who need a job
Elvis, This is so ridiculous. Why are you so obsessed what Mitt Romney is doing right now as a businessman? I don't know, I am not his personal secretary. Romney is currently not our President. Why don't you just focus on our current President and what he is currently doing instead of diverting attention from Obama's pathetic record to Romney's current business status.
dee still waiting?..oh remember the government don't create jobs..or y'all don't like that line anymore
Dee, don't waste your time with Elvis, it's like talking to a vegetable. In fact, I think it is Joe Biden in disguise.
Like I always say take yor Fox to a Bush.
Well, I guess we can say that Obama has "sucked" as an expert with improving the economy and with everything else. We know Romney is capable of improving the economy and with fiscal responsiblities (he has done this as Governor by balancing the budget and leaving the state with a surplus). As far as foreign policy, I guess we would have to wait and see but I do know he won't be appologizing for America as Obama does.
NO I guess you can say . I won't say that because it isn't true. Brainwashing a terrible thing to waste.
are there any one working for him right this minute. a full time job health care?
Oncearepub, Ok, I will take credit for that statement if it makes you feel better, but one thing you refuse to acknowledge is that a majority thinks the same way I do, obviously, the liberal minority are very abundant and vocal on these posts but you and I know many of the things you rad on these posts obviously do not reflect the true views of the people.
Ah, another vote for Great Depression II! What's most amazing to me, Dee, is how rightwingnut@!$%#tards get all excited about Rmoney turning the economy around, when all he really intends to do is impose even more draconian austerity measure on the majority of the country's citizens than those which are RIGHT THIS MINUTE causing European countries to slip back into recession and their governments to fall! The results of his plans are already perfectly evident! Of course, he fully intends to protect his chums in the top 1% and increase military spending beyond what the Pentagon wants, like any of that will make his plan work better.
As far as foreign policy is concerned, he is currently surrounding himself with aging Cold Warriors from daddy Bush's circle, and has himself declared Russia! to be the biggest threat to America!
Hardly a propitious start in either area.
Maybe you should actually read Romney's plan before you go ahead and do what you liberals do best, call people rightwingnuts or whatever else because their views are different from your own. You know nothing about me, My disapproval of Obama's handling of the economy is consistant with a majority of the people if you even bother to pay attention to the polls. This does not make me a rightwing nut or whatever you want to call me. I see things how they are! Obama has a record, you libs can not hide from it, all you can do is make excuses for it. This will not work in November so get over it.
I have read several analyses of what little plan there is, Dee. Presumably, the rest is just Paul Ryan horse@!$%#, since Mittens and virtually all Congressional Republicans have already adopted it.
And, Dee, again, the results of Rmoney's great vision are already right in front of your very eyes. For instance, Mittens will probably be able to get Sarkozy to run as his VP, since it looks like he will be out of a job soon.
If you truly think that your represent a majority view in this country, then I guess you've got nothing to worry about. Rmoney should win in a landslide, and we will all be enjoying Great Depression II before you know it, that being the only possible outcome, and all!
Gee, you ARE some kinda Patriot, all right. Just THINK of the great life experience a new Depression will be for generations to come!
The Beat goes ON!!!
This government worked!!! Bill Clinton reversed Reagan's course, raising taxes on the wealthy, and lowering them for the working and middle classes. This produced the longest sustained economic expansion in American history. Importantly, it also produced budgetary surpluses allowing the government to begin paying down the crippling debt begun under Reagan. In 2000, Clinton's last year, the surplus amounted to $236 billion. The forecast ten year surpluses stood at $5.6 trillion. It was the last black ink America would see for decades, perhaps forever.
Republicans who have destroyed America!!! And the beat goes on!!!!!!!!!!
1- Nixon
2- Reagan
3- H.W. Bush
4- George W. Bush
The U.S. is starting to look like it is entering just such a death spiral. It is foretold not simply by the large and growing deficits, nor by the fact that their carrying costs will rise quickly as interest rates rise. Rather, it is the fact that these trends are becoming irreversible, a structural part of the U.S. economy.
Richard Nixon: INFLATION!!! Our money is not worth ANYTHING!!! Nixon convened a summit of his economic advisers at Camp David. He then announced temporary wage and price controls, allowed the dollar to float against other currencies, and ended the convertibility of the dollar into gold, which made the dollar’s value POLITICAL DOLLARS!!!!
Herbert Stein, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under Richard Nixon was fond of saying, Things that can't go on forever, don't.
Ronald Reagan: Reagan cut the marginal tax rate on the wealthiest of Americans from 70% to 38%. He promised it would spur an orgy of investment and rocket the economy to new levels of production and prosperity. Instead, his supply side economics did the exact opposite. It produced the deepest recession since the Great Depression.
H.W.Bush: By 1992, interest and inflation rates were the lowest in years, but by midyear the unemployment rate reached 7.8 percent, the highest since 1984.[11] In September 1992, the Census Bureau reported that 14.2 percent of all Americans lived in poverty.
George W. Bush: Initiated a 1.35 trillion tax cut program—one of the largest tax cuts in U.S. history.
Bush argued that such a tax cut would stimulate the economy and create jobs. Others, including the Treasury Secretary at the time Paul O'Neill, were opposed to some of the tax cuts on the basis that they would contribute to budget deficits and undermine Social Security.
By October 2008, due to increases in domestic and foreign spending, the national debt had risen to $11.3 trillion.
Bush's tax cuts and the 10 year deficit explodes to a mind-boggling $7.9 trillion. Within ten years, the government will owe more than $15 trillion. And this, at precisely the time the government needs fiscal solvency to begin paying the Baby Boomers their Social Security.
"The general fund has been borrowing from Social Security and we've borrowed well over $2 trillion," he said. "That money has got to be paid back.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the truth.
AJ, you are too ignorant to mess with
BTW, you won't find any Republicans supporting Nixon's policies, He was far to the left of JFK. Liberals should love Nixon who gave us the EPA, OSHA, Wage and Price Controls, Earth Day, proposed a guaranteed annual income, Universal Health Care.
