Romney: Taking over the party

“A day after claiming the title of GOP presidential nominee, Mitt Romney moved aggressively Wednesday to coordinate with the Republican National Committee to intensify his fight against President Barack Obama,” the Detroit Free-Press writes.

“Mitt Romney likes to talk on the campaign trail about how his father ‘grew up poor,’ but that’s not the whole story,” the AP writes. “The father of the presumptive Republican nominee, George Romney, grew up in a family that suffered financial losses and enjoyed prosperity.” It adds, “George Romney was born July 8, 1907, in Chihuahua, Mexico, where his parents and other Mormons had moved to avoid persecution and U.S. laws against polygamy… George Romney’s father was Gaskell Romney, a carpenter who led a prosperous life in a Mormon colony in Mexico, according to the ‘The Real Romney,’ a book written by two Boston Globe reporters. But turmoil from the Mexican revolution later forced the Romneys and other Mormon families to flee back to the United States. The family suddenly went from owning a large Mexican ranch to being nearly penniless, and the family moved from house to house in California, Idaho and Utah as they struggled to build a new life. Over time, though, Mitt’s grandfather became prosperous, building some of the finest homes in Salt Lake City, according to the Globe book, but along with many other Americans suffered financial setbacks during the Great Depression.”

Ben, what's Romney gonna do? He couldn't "manage" a little state of Massachusetts - which by the way did much worse under his tenure than before and after Romney.

And you want to give Romney the keys to the White House? The guy has to lie in order to have something to say! He has not told truth about anything (oh, yeah, except what his real name is).

Yeah, and isn't the state a Dem controlled entity? Shouldn't the failed management of that state be directed to them rather than the governor?

You are giving Romney a pass that I guarantee you would not give Obama. Governor is like a president, just on a much smaller scale.

Romney passed policies that hurt every day Mass resident. He increased all fees down the board for regular people to give out tax breaks to corporations. Guess what, Bush tax breaks did not work and neither did Romney's. Both are responsible for leaving their country and state (respectively) worse off than what they took over.

And that is why Romney cannot and will not be the president.

No, I would like to hear the progressive response to a simple question.

Isn't the state government controlled by a liberal body that can over-ride a Governors proposal any time it chooses to?

Do you bayllie happen to reside in Mass.? I'm curious, what fees did he increase to find funds to give to corporations? Sources please.

And in order to get any budget in line......things need to be cut, and the only way to be truly fair to the public as a whole is that each and every category needs to be giving something up. And guess what, that often hurts. Just as my family has had to make choices that they don't enjoy in order to fit a budget, so too should government. And all monies spent should actually be thought of in terms of investment....which will deliver the greatest return for the community at large...How can those dollars be made to grow and multiply to serve more in the long run. Government cannot make problems disappear with the stroke of a pen. Writing a check is only treating the symptoms of the problem, not the root cause.

Hey! Where are the birthers? Shouldn't they be demanding that Mittens prove he is a citizen?

Hey, Ben: Your hero, "teabagger" Governor Walker posted the largest job loss in Wisconsin for the nation!

Odd that you don't mention that.

The new report puts state private-sector employment at 2,329,500, compared with 2,323,600 when Walker took office -- an increase of 5,900 jobs.

Boy there is nothing you won't excuse for a "teabagger". You would not allow that for your President, for whom you have an irrational hatred.

The fact is that Walker is LAST. His policies have driven the state into the ditch. And to be taken seriously, you need to recognize that.

You are asking the rest of us to support Mittens, who believes in the same policies that Walker does.

Which would mean the end of any improvement of the our economy.

Now. If you give a response, I expect you to own this, as you support the same ideals.

      Michael:

Wisconsin lost 23,900 jobs between March 2011 and March 2012, according to data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state’s lead in job losses is significantly greater than the rest of the 50 states: No other state lost more than 3,500 jobs.

      http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Elections/Governors/2012/0425/Wisconsin-posts-biggest-US-job-loss-as-Gov.-Scott-Walker-fights-for-his-job

The state also lost more private-sector jobs than any other state.

I guess these facts are spitting you in the face.

If you are accusing Governor Walker of losing jobs.....I would say that if that increase reflected a decrease in the bloat of government union employees which are breaking the rest of the state financially through taxes....well, then it is probably a good thing. I would also submit to you that the kind of union mentality might be more of a reason for businesses to give a state a miss as far as new openings or expansions. I often wonder, how many of the people in these forums, the ones who are always bashing the wealthy, are members of a union and will be receiving retirement earnings and benefits that probably exceed what I am actually making while going to work every day.

Hmmm, my grandfather immigrated to America from Norway with his family in the early 1900's, to find a better liife; he graduated from college in the 1920's, a self-made man. Can I run for President?

This is a farce. This is like saying that if Giuliani were the nominee, that he would be taking over the party. This is more akin to Hitler and Mussolini forming an alliance. One is pure evil (the GOP), the other has visions of grandeur (Romney). They are useful tools to each other to promote their agendas. It's like Mitch Daniels in Indiana. He couldn't care less about social issues, but will not stand in the way of people like Mike Pence who have very clear social agendas. In turn they support Daniels remaking of the functions of government. If independent think that Romney can moderate the extremes of the GOP, think hard. Bush was a "compassionate conservative." Look where that got us. There are no examples of where "business oriented" Republicans have been able to reign in the extremes of their party. I'm not sure they really care to.

Only problem is he didn't give the full report: Walker promised 250,000 jobs, since January 2011 he created only 5,900 jobs in this last report. He was loosing jobs for over 1 year. He has a very long way to go for 250,000 jobs. I guess he will have even less time before recall election.

If George Romney was born in Mexico, how was it that he could run for President?

            Reply#8 - Thu Apr 26, 2012 2:57 PM EDT

Very simply, any Americans-naturalized or native born citizens- who happen to be living abroad at the time of the birth of their child, the child receives the benefit of American citizenship based upon the status of his parents as citizens....Some nations, like Ireland, will grant the child dual citizenship until the time that they reach the age of majority (at which point, they must choose). I believe that the question in the President's family revolves around the actual status of his parents in terms of citizenship at the time of his birth. Did his mother relinquish her American citizenship with marriage and relocation out of the country? What was the status of his natural father at the time of his birth? And if she was not a citizen at the time of his birth, then he would not be granted the automatic citizenship either. Now, moving back to the United States and resuming citizenship would be possible for his mother if she were born in the United States, but if he were not, then he would be considered legally to be a naturalized citizen, and therefore not eligible under the constitution for the office of President.
