As he traveled to three swing states this week to talk about student loan costs, President Barack Obama has been turning the words of Republican members of Congress against them in order to underscore, as the president characterizes it, their indifference to the struggles of college students.
Tuesday, Obama paraphrased Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-NC, who said in a radio interview that she has “very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that.”
She went on to say, “I remind folks all the time that the Declaration of Independence says, ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ You don’t just sit on your butt and have it dumped in your lap.”
Speaking at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the president said he would quote Foxx’s remarks, “because I know you guys will think I'm making it up.”
“She said she had ‘very little tolerance for people who tell me they graduate with debt because there's no reason for that,’” Obama said, even though he left out the amount of student debt Foxx said she did not tolerate students accumulating.
NRO’s Katrina Trinko pointed to a study by the New York Federal Reserve that showed the average outstanding student loan nationally was $23,300 and almost 95 percent of student loan borrowers owed less than $75,000, so Foxx’s remarks referred to a small number of debtors.
Obama also cited Foxx at his next speech at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
“She said, students who rack up student loan debt are just sitting on their butts, having opportunity ‘dumped in your lap.’”
“I can tell you, Michelle and I, we didn't take out loans because we were lazy,” he continued to laughter. “You didn't take out loans because you're lazy.”
At his final speech Wednesday at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Obama quoted from Rep. Todd Akin, R-MO, who was asked during a Senate debate (he’s seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill) whether he would vote on a bill to keep student loan interest rates from increasing in July.
Akin responded, "America has got the equivalent of the stage three cancer of socialism because the federal government is tampering in all kinds of stuff it has no business tampering in. So, first to answer your question precisely – what the Democrats did to get rid of the private student loans and take it all over by the government was wrong. It was a lousy bill. That's why I voted no."
Obama made use of Akin’s words today, telling the Iowa students, “You've got one member of Congress who compared these student loans -- I'm not kidding here -- to a ‘stage-three cancer of socialism.’”
“Stage-three cancer? I don't know where to start. What do you mean? What are you talking about? Come on. Just when you think you've heard it all in Washington, somebody comes up with a new way to go off the deep end,” he said.
Obama’s Iowa speech came just hours before House Speaker John Boehner announced his caucus’ plan to introduce their own bill to extend the current 3.4 percent interest rate for one year to prevent it from rising to 6.8 percent.
Boehner’s office said the extension would be paid for by re-allocating college financial aid funds that were diverted by Democrats to pay for the health care law.
“In essence, they raided student aid to pay for a health care law that is making it harder for American small businesses to hire new workers – including recent college graduates,” Boehner’s office said in a statement.

Its understandable that Obama would do this. His failed economic policies have failed to produce long term well paying jobs that offer a future to young people.
What else can he offer to them, but make it easy for them to go thousands of dollars in debt by receiving some sort of government assistance.
How many stories have we read or seen in the media where people who have BA's, MA's and a Doctorate with tons of student debt are back in school taking on even more student loan debt in order to try to get new skills that will land them a job?
Obama isn't trying to help these young people, he's trying to sweep his failures under the rug.
WHAT: Sorry, but don't assume Obama is nearly as cynical as you and your party. Obama is a totally self made man and earned everything he's achieved. He knows what it feels like to indebt yourself for years and years.
Remember, he as merely a "community organizer" which the Right so loves to denigrate and was hardly in it for the money. If you don't think investing in the young people of this country is a good investment, than I have no idea what is of importance to you.
You know, this is what lot's of Republicans said when Harry Truman introduced the G.I. Bill. It was the same kind of talk from the Right. And history has proven that was a one hell of a good investment to make in both our returning soldiers and the nation as a whole.

I promise if elected one of the first things I'll do after taking office is get my tax reform passed. Going on about his tax reform now in his campaign, which is kind of strange, because with democratic control of congress, Obama could have gotten it passed as easily as Obamacare. Gee with all the vacations he was taking, it must have slipped his mind to propose it to Congress when he had democratic control.

Like I'm 100% sure you don't know that Obama has/is laying down the foundations for a military take over of our government. There are al least 8 indicators which point to this.
1. Obama doesn't belive in the Constitution. He's said that it has out lived its usefulness.
2. Obama issues Executive Orders to manipulate around Constitutional checks and balances.
3. Obama issed an Executive Order in March giving himself the authority to declare Marshall Law at his discretion.
4. On December 31,2011 Obama signed into law a Military Funding Bill that gives authority to the military to detain indefinitely for any reason any American citizen on American soil without having to provide that citizen with their Constitutional protections.
5. The Obama administration states that Constitutional protections do not apply to military authority.
6. Obama wants to create a civilian military police force to deal with domestic issues that will only answer to him.
7. Obama has stated that he wants the Government to take over control of the Internet and other forms of communication.
8. It been reported that internment camps are being built in the South.
I didn't post the fact that Obama has refused to participate in Constitutional processes by voting "present" on Bills on the Senate floor when he was a Senator.
or the fact that the best way to control a population is to have that population dependent on government assistance. With 46% of our population living in or at the edge of poverty and a greater number of people receiving some form of government assistance, it make the take over of our government a much easier task.
All Obama will need is an excuse like our government can no longer sustain the national debt. With is never ending debt crises the national debt is just going to get worse and worse until it breaks this country's back.
So lets give him four more years to complete the job he started.

Get a clue kid. Obama and the Democrats had 2 years to get what they wanted without much opposition. In 2010 their majorities shrank to what you see today. In their 2 glory years we got Obama-Care and Dodd-Frank both will have a hard time surviving in this country. The rest of the stuff you mention is just a lot of noise. There is very little recovery, there are no great job gains and the labors unions were given the control of the auto industry not just jobs.
Maybe you are the one that needs to go back and do some more research. This time read articles form both sides and form your own opinion and not what people tell you to believe. Maybe when you get older you just might understand that the Obama administration failed at more things than they ever accomplished.
I will leave you with this one thought. Anytime this country has a President that thinks it is his job to go around this world and apologize for all that we have done, that person should never be the President of this country. Until you and anyone else that is an American thinks that we are the bad guys maybe you should read a history book with much care. Well Obama is still a popular teacher. That can explain why he is a terrible president. The majority of his staff has left and went back to school now Obama can leave come November. He has taught us a very valuable lesson and that he is not qualified to run this country.

Why do you think the US credit rating was downgraded? What was the cause? Was it because of the short term problems that we've had, or perhaps the problems that have piled up over the course of decades?

Blaming the US for international problems...are we completely innocent in our dealings with the rest of the world? For instance, our backing of certain Afghani groups during their war with the Soviet Union. We have a bit of a history of backing leaders when it's convenient for us, and then realizing that they are just as bad as the people we were against originally. (Saddam, etc).
Unemployment is indeed higher since he's taken office, but again, can you explain why that is? http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS14000000. This link shows unemployment beginning to rise just before he took office. The financial crisis was in it's infancy at that point.
Gas prices...there's not much a president, any president, can do about the price of gas. Speculation, forces of nature, mechanical fault and demand all impact the current price of gas. How is a president supposed to overcome all that? More drilling? Not reallly, that would mean more production in the future, but not now.

As far a gas prices - no the president cant mandate the price of gasoline - but obama has most definatly effected prices by choking off over a third of our domestic oil production and not issuing ANY new drilling permits on federal land. As for the debt ceiling, it's been raised 74 times since 1962, and 10 times since 2001. Did you complain about it all those other times?
How has Obama stopped 1/3 of domestic oil production? Link?
Can you expand on the "controlling" interests in industry, banking, finance and healthcare? What parts of those industries is, or would be controlled by the federal government? Are you talking about regulations?

You're not reading my posts properly. I'm not defending Obama that much, I'm trying to draw you into a discussion about specifics. You say you don't like Obama, which is fine, but just saying that he's stupid/awful/idiotic doesn't really mean much when it's not backed up by specific reasons why. Hence, my questions....
Also, how can I tell if Obama's policies have made the recovery faster or slower? That's a question of what might have been. There is no alternate reality that will tell us how things would have been if we had taken a different course during the recession.

Let's see...our debt is by far the worst it has ever been, our unemployment is still high, our housing crisis is the worst since the great depression, our president has instilled class/race/gender warfare, his office has a new scandal du jour (prostitutes in Columbia, spending sprees in Vegas, Fast and Furious), he has failed energy projects like Solyndra, his flagship "claim-to-fame" health-care initiative has been taken to the Supreme Court by half of the country (26 states), his policies keep stifling business in America with uncertainty and doubt, thus, keeping them from investing and hiring....
...and sure enough, the liberals want to re-elect him. Yup, liberals sure are geniuses all right!

You forgot this. Some indicator that Obama is laying down the foundations for a military take over of our goverment.
1. Obama doesn't belive in the Constitution. He's said that it has out lived its usefulness.
2. Obama issues Executive Orders to manipulate around Constitutional checks and balances.
3. Obama issed an Executive Order in March giving himself the authority to declare Marshall Law at his discretion.
4. On December 31,2011 Obama signed into law a Military Funding Bill that gives authority to the military to detain indefinitely for any reason any American citizen on American soil without having to provide that citizen with their Constitutional protections.
5. The Obama administration states that Constitutional protections do not apply to military authority.
6. Obama wants to create a civilian military police force to deal with domestic issues that will only answer to him.
7. Obama has stated that he wants the Government to take over control of the Internet and other forms of communication.
8. It been reported that internment camps are being built in the South.
I didn't post the fact that Obama has refused to participate in Constitutional processes by voting "present" on Bills on the Senate floor when he was a Senator.
or the fact that the best way to control a population is to have that population dependent on government assistance. With 46% of our population living in or at the edge of poverty and a greater number of people receiving some form of government assistance, it make the take over of our government a much easier task.

With the national debt Obama is creating and with Obama's never ending debt crises, just how long do you think Obama can keep borrowing money from foreign nations to run his government and try and buy his reelections by creating more programs that hook more and more people on Government assistance.
Just the other day we were reading how Congress secured $2 trillion in loans from the social security Trust fund with Treasury Bond. That Obama policies were devaluing those bonds and by the time SS can get rid of them, they won't be nearly worth the $2 trillion they are supposed to replace in SS.
Now if these treasury bonds that Obama is putting up as security on all his borrowing from foreign nations devalue, how much long do you think foreign nations are going to keep lend money to Obama to run his government?
We already know that China has publicly scolded Obama like a child for devaluing the Treasury Bonds its holding and threaten to sell the bonds at a loss and cut off its lending to Obama.
WE know from the summit in Colombia a couple of weeks ago that the leaders who attended that summit blame Obama and his economic policies as causing their countries financial problems due to the devalued treasury bonds.

The number of uninformed Obama supporters that post here on Newsvine is just amazing. They're so die hard, one would think that they would get to know what they are buying before its too late.
One Obama supporter tried to claim that the billions in debt Bush put this country was greater than the Trillions in debt Obama has put this country.
With that kind of thinking, its no wonder Obama is being allowed to turn this country into a 3rd world nation ruled by an Obama appointed military authority.
What is really a shame, is how so many people are still buying into the GOP's class warfare BS, even though many tax plans proposed by the GOP candidates include tax breaks for the wealthy and tax increases for the middle and lower class. What is also a shame is people actually believe that Mitt "for the middle" Romney wants to bolster the safety nets for the poor, yet supports Paul Ryan's plan of cutting billions from programs like food stamps and virtually eliminating Medicare with a Ponzi scheme of giving elderly people a check and telling them that they're on their own. And lastly, there is the shame of having a candidate (good old Willard) who claims to be for the middle class, yet wants to give hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax breaks to the wealthy while giving a paltry few hundred dollars to the middle class and actually INCREASING taxes for Americans who make under $40,000. So much for the GOP supporting the middle class in America...' Perhaps that is why Boehner and Cantor are fighting, there is some constraint on their spending right now and they are both jonesing for it. They need a fix. They haven't had a blank check to just keep shoveling out the money and borrowing like they could under GWB.
When Bush got in the White House in 2001, gasoline was a buck fifty. before his eight years was up, it rose to over four bucks. thankfully, he's gone and it has come down some.
When he and Cheney started in 2001, defense and war spending was 400 billion/year. by the time he left, it was 800 billion/year. They are like junkies. I just don't know how they can claim fiscal conservatism, unless they are like every other kind of junky, they just lie and steal to get more money. Thankfully, now that they are gone, that figure is also coming down.
Maybe that's what Boehner and Cantor are fighting about, which lies to tell that will get them more spending.

Those of us who watched the special interview with Cantor at his home in Virgina were stuned when he and his Chief of staff claimed that President Reagan did not raise taxes. That is simply a LIE. Reagan raised taxes 11 times during his Eight years as President.
The National debt was $930,210B whenReagan took office. Eight years later it was $2,684T. That is a whopping 189% increase in the National Debt by a Conserative President. As a comparison of Percentages of Increase in the Nationsal Debt Bush #1 was 55.6%, Clinton was 36% and Bush #2 was 89% . These numbers are posted on the Official Government web site Bureau of Public Debt.
The Republican Presidents created the Vast Majority of the Current National Debt yet they claim to be Conseratives. The FACTS don't support that claim.
