Obama slams representatives using their own words

 

As he traveled to three swing states this week to talk about student loan costs, President Barack Obama has been turning the words of Republican members of Congress against them in order to underscore, as the president characterizes it, their indifference to the struggles of college students.

Tuesday, Obama paraphrased Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-NC, who said in a radio interview that she has “very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that.”

She went on to say, “I remind folks all the time that the Declaration of Independence says, ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ You don’t just sit on your butt and have it dumped in your lap.”

Speaking at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the president said he would quote Foxx’s remarks, “because I know you guys will think I'm making it up.”

“She said she had ‘very little tolerance for people who tell me they graduate with debt because there's no reason for that,’” Obama said, even though he left out the amount of student debt Foxx said she did not tolerate students accumulating.

NRO’s Katrina Trinko pointed to a study by the New York Federal Reserve that showed the average outstanding student loan nationally was $23,300 and almost 95 percent of student loan borrowers owed less than $75,000, so Foxx’s remarks referred to a small number of debtors.

Obama also cited Foxx at his next speech at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

“She said, students who rack up student loan debt are just sitting on their butts, having opportunity ‘dumped in your lap.’”

“I can tell you, Michelle and I, we didn't take out loans because we were lazy,” he continued to laughter. “You didn't take out loans because you're lazy.” 

At his final speech Wednesday at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Obama quoted from Rep. Todd Akin, R-MO, who was asked during a Senate debate (he’s seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill) whether he would vote on a bill to keep student loan interest rates from increasing in July.

Akin responded, "America has got the equivalent of the stage three cancer of socialism because the federal government is tampering in all kinds of stuff it has no business tampering in. So, first to answer your question precisely – what the Democrats did to get rid of the private student loans and take it all over by the government was wrong. It was a lousy bill. That's why I voted no."

Obama made use of Akin’s words today, telling the Iowa students, “You've got one member of Congress who compared these student loans -- I'm not kidding here -- to a ‘stage-three cancer of socialism.’”

“Stage-three cancer? I don't know where to start. What do you mean? What are you talking about? Come on. Just when you think you've heard it all in Washington, somebody comes up with a new way to go off the deep end,” he said.

Obama’s Iowa speech came just hours before House Speaker John Boehner announced his caucus’ plan to introduce their own bill to extend the current 3.4 percent interest rate for one year to prevent it from rising to 6.8 percent.

Boehner’s office said the extension would be paid for by re-allocating college financial aid funds that were diverted by Democrats to pay for the health care law.

“In essence, they raided student aid to pay for a health care law that is making it harder for American small businesses to hire new workers – including recent college graduates,” Boehner’s office said in a statement.

Whats really sad is that if the economy had been improving after 3.5 years of Obama's policies then the U.S. wouldn't be in a such a dire economic condition that 1 of 2 graduating college students wont even be able to find a job and those that do are underemployed. If the economy had been improving like it should have been instead of the worst recovery in history then an interest rate hike of 3.4 to 6.8% wouldn't be that big a deal.

What happened to "Redistribute the Wealth"? Don't these new graduates want to pay a little more, pay their "Fair Share", which will go back into the fund, so that more loans can be given out to more people, so they can become more successful, and help distribute their wealth?

If Obama's policies were really working then he would be talking about the great success of his policies instead of avoiding the real issues of anemic economic growth, four record setting deficit spending years of 1.4 trillion a year more than the Federal Government takes in, 16 Trillion dollar National, Dept, borrowing 40 cents of every dollar the federal government spends, etc.

Why doesn't he talk about how those very same college students and our children are going to have to pay for Obama's and the Democrats failed Keynesian Theories.

Gee David, you make reference to the worst recovery in history, but NO mention of the worst recession EVER short of the big depression. I'm sure you just forgot.

Commander, there IS no bail out of the student loan program. It is a continuation with funds loaned at 3%. Banks are paying next to nothing for THEIR funds. We still make a little money.

Govt taking over the loan program was the smartest thing they have done in decades. The banks used to service the loan with NO risk at all and took all the fees, leaving the Govt with the risk and some bad loans. To save money, the Govt took over servicing. Makes perfect sense. Now if those poor banks want the program back and agree to take the RISK as well, then maybe we should consider.

When the bill came up for final passage on September 7, 2007, then-Senator Obama did not vote; he was campaigning for president in California and Oregon.

On the face of it, that's a stupid attack: the bill passed overwhelmingly, by a 79-12 margin; his vote was irrelevant. And it's not like he was goofing off: Obama was running for president. If his vote would have made a difference, he would have returned to D.C. to cast it—but it didn't.

Moreoever, every single one of the 12 no votes in the Senate were cast by Republicans. The same thing was true in the House, where a majority of Republicans voted against the measure. Even if you fault Obama for missing the vote, at least he didn't try to kill the bill.

Yet John Boehner's press shop keeps piling on:

You do realize that we were in the Great Recession, meaning it was worse than ANY other recession except the Great Depression. You also must know that it's not just an US recession, but a WORLD recession.

You do understand that we are part of the WORLD economy. That what affects them, affects us as well. WE are not an economic island, haven't been for a very long time.

You of course know that the economy, no matter whom is POTUS, will not be back to the levels it has been for probably many more years to come. That the housing market may not recover from the crash for another ten years.

And of course you realize that it is impossible to turn around a problem of this magnitude in 3 1/2 years. The US has been digging this hole for 2 generations. OF course you know a generation is 20 years. So that means 40 yrs.

Obama is doing an amazing job! Much better that could have been expected by anyone intelligent enough to realize the deep sh&$# we were in.

We had this fixed! In 2000, when Bush and Republican majorities in both houses were elected, the budget was running a surplus ($240B) and our national debt was $5.8T. After 8 years of Republican budgets, our debt was $11.9T and the economy was in the toilet.

Republicans blame all of this on entitlements. Did entitlements increase $6.1T in 8 years? No! Republicans decreased government revenue with massive tax cuts and increases government spending beyond all rational bounds. The first Bush/Republican budget (2001) budget spent $1.8T. The last federal budget under Bush spent $3.5T with a deficit of $1.4T!!!

Your comments about Obama being the biggest deficit spender in history are false! The biggest deficit spenders in history were Republican. Now, explain to me why we want to put them back in place to do it all over again?

This story and barack is pathetic. Out of context? No, more like bold faced lying about what was said. barack stands up there in front of a bunch of kids that he knows never heard the original statements and lies through his teeth like he's so famous for.

Then we are all blessed with someone like Feisty redhead and her typical uninformed knee jerk reaction to a story that misleads those who don't actually read a story with baited headlines. The headline should have read; "bARACK MISTREPRESENTS CONGRESSIONAL MEMBERS WORDS IN EFFORT TO SWAY COLLEGE VOTE". That would have been an accurate headline for what took place. It's sad that we have people like feisty who forms an opinion based on a headline and has no idea of the falsehoods that lie beneath.

Everybody says "where did Bush get the Money for the Iraq War" to defend the "where are we going to get a Trillion for student loans?" Obama could have ended both wars. He didn't. Since he continued to fund them, that is his doing, not Bush's. As far as a Trillion to pay off loans? How is that fair to make the responsible taxpayers pay for this? We payed our way. You know, I am really tired of people bashing congress for being obstructionist....if you really understand what happened in 2010 elections, it shows that the American people did not approve of the policies and practices of this administration, and before things got too far out of hand, they elected new representation to stem the flow. And that is, for the most part, what they have done. You can call that obstructionist and let our President use it as a cop out for his own failures, and his deceptions to the American people, if you like, but the representatives who are being obstructionist were sent to Washington to stem the damage from becoming even worse, and as such, are carrying out the wishes of the majority of the American people....

Feisty et. all- In the name of truth I agree with you on this one. I am all for using the words of politicians against them to expose hypocracy, misuse of office, misuse of funds, bloated bureaucracy, etc.

The President clearly misused the words of the quoted representative. The representative said that the government taking over the student loan system exposed it to rampant bloating, misuse, and the growth of student loan debt because universities realized that the government would insure larger and larger loans so they could keep charging more. The President make it appear that the representative was against students, whereas he was against socialism- the socialism of student loans. That's a bit different.

Back to the general topic- I agree that we need to use the words/actions of our representatives to keep checks/balances on their powers and the definitions of laws and the Constitution. Examples:

We just had the director of the GSA's finance committee talking to Congress about them cutting 30% of their car fleet to save money (a good thing). A Congressman asked how many card do you have in your fleet, to which the Director said he didn't know. He was challenged numerous times based on his position, his being an accountant, and his oversight of the overall budgeting of the GSA, but he kept saying that he didn't know. BS, CYA. So yes, hold the Director accountable.

We just had Eric Holder sit in front of a Congressional committee and say that he didn't know anything about Fast and Furious. Then the DOJ moved all of the relevent agents to DC, closed the files, denied the Border Patrol agent's family victim status, closed the murder case's files to the public, supress information and only provide 1/3 of the requested information to the Congressional committee (which now BTW it's coming out that there was a third Fast and Furious gun found at the murder scene). All the new information that is coming out is from reporters looking into things. We should hold the Director of the DOJ to his words and fire him/try him for purgery.

Does this sound familiar: "I will be held accountable,” Obama said. “I’ve got four years and … A year form now, I think people are going to see that we’re starting to make some progress, but there’s still going to be some pain out there … If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.” You've quite probably never seen or heard that because you keep your head in the sand. But hundreds of examples of his words will come back to haunt him, you, and those like you and I'm gleefully looking forward to the self-destruction of his pathetic, sorry excuse for a leader, presidency. If you want to try and play the "he said she said" stuff. You will lose so badly there will need to be a mercy call. Unlike your messiah that has to fabricate and re-organize statements to make them talking points for himself, the right only needs to provide video and audio footage of the loser in charge.

Romney = successful businessman who no matter how much money he's made has created THOUSANDS of jobs that are still here today. barack=someone who has never produced anything in the free market, lived off of taxpayer money for most of his career and wants to tell you he's on your side while living among the very people that he publicly chastises.     Bill, do you understand what is happening in the military right now, as you type this crap? The US Armed Forces are in the process of a "draw-down". Congressional Offices throughout the country were already notified that next year, their available Academy Nominations will fewer. Administrative discharges throughout the military are on the rise. Enlistment criteria is tightening up. Prior service enlistments are taking a lower priority. It's called a draw-down Bill. It happens after every war. You can blame it on Obama if you want but in all fairness, you then have to credit him with ending the Iraq war and beginning the withdrawal in Afghanistan that allows for a draw-down.

    Our deficit situation will not be brought under control through cuts alone. Sane people understand this. Why is it that sacrifice is expected to come from those who are just hanging on by a thread as it is? Where is the shared sacrifice? The cuts are happening. Time to discuss revenue. Tax rates are at an all-time low, and it shows. We don't pay for anything (wars, unfunded mandates, etc) And, one only needs to look at where austerity has been implemented to see that such policies are ushering in another recession.

    The student loan
    stuff that's the focal point of Obama's speeches that he's making to youth
    wherever he goes is legislation the Democrats wrote but he won't tell you that!
    He talked about it a lot yesterday. The interest rate increase is coming up for
    a vote on July 1st because the Democrat-controlled Congress in 2007 wanted it
    that way. Obama is running around scaring these students who don't know the
    facts or the truth behind this, that if something isn't done by the Congress,
    by July 1st, their student loan interest rate will double.

    The Democrats controlled both houses of Congress in 2007. They had just won the
    election. The House, they took it back in 2006. Pelosi's running the House;
    Democrats are running the Senate. So 2007 they passed legislation that would
    cut the student loan interest rate in half and then reinstituted it July 1st
    this year, on purpose. They wanted the college student loan interest rate to
    double in an election year, in the summer right before the conventions. They
    were rolling the dice.

    So that it would appear to be doubling to students this year, the Democrats did
    all of this. They did it to have a campaign issue in case they needed it in
    2012. July 1st. So five years ago they planned this. Obama was a Senator in
    2007, and he didn't even vote on this bill. Twice! There were two votes on
    raising the college loan interest rate back to what it will be -- doubling it,
    in effect -- on July 1st, 2012. He didn't even vote "present." He was
    too busy campaigning. That's how vitally important the issue of student loan
    interest rates was to him back then.

            As I pointed out to you earlier chilled, the healthcare bill called for the government "takeover" of education funding from the private banks who were in it for the money also. Except in his case, it was to help "fund" the ACA with the interest collected.

            The ACA isn't even in full effect yet.

            That's right it isn't. Just the tip of the iceberg of "we have to pass it to find out what's in it". Many of the provisions took affect shortly after passage and continue to "trickle in" so as to keep the pain to a minimum and keep the sheep at bay when they find out the truth about the other junk within.

            His family paid for it? He attended Occidental college for 2 years under a full scholarship. Occidental is considered a "second choice" in the LA area, UCLA or USC being more prestigious. He then spent 2 years at Columbia University in NYC, where, in his own words, Obama says he made it through hard work and college loans. He then went to Harvard where he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law School. These things can all be substantiated despite any "birther" crap that might be distributed through email. I don't see anything particularly "priviliged" about his history nor anything for Obama to be ashamed of.

            These young, educated idiots want to fall for Obama's line of malarkey?

The loans that I was getting pre-government takeover were much easier to deal with, and I had a lot of options on interest rates, amounts, and sources. Now there's a firm cap on amounts and it's much harder to get through all the red tape in the application process.

                David summed up the whole problem with this country. A politician (on either side, but in this case the usual side) can blatantly twist words, misrepresent and quite frankly LIE.                 I have, time after time, criticized Bush for a bunch of bone-headed moves; like signing every stupid spending bill that pelosi and reid put in front of him.                   Leroy, Education is all but socialized. You've been sleeping. I've went to public school. My kids have gone to both public and private.

                  Private schools are an entirely different world. My high school was around 900 kids

                  Less Drugs 1 drug bust in 5 years

                  Less Violence

                  No Teen pregnancy in 5 years of high school so far.

                  Less Stealing. Most kids don't even bother to put a lock on their lockers.

                  No police

                  No metal detecters.

                  We had the daughter of a friend stay for 3 months at our home. She was in our public school where my kids would have gone. She was groped twice on the bus, had some personal items stolen. She was in a vocational program and they had security at both schools.

                  Yeah, your right, we should have the government run them all!

                  If you really care for your kids, find the money to put them in a private school even if it means working extra legal jobs.

                  Oh, yeah I forgot the most important part. They have a heavier course load and get better grades.

                  do you seriously think because they are public schools "run by the government" that is why there may be more crime, problems, etc. be smart. think about it really. you can do it. parents that have the resources to send their children to private school care about education, most have higher socioeconomic status. private schools can kick out anyone they wish if they are creating a disturbance, public school by law has to educate everyone. these are 2 different worlds and it has nothing to do with the government running one and a business running the other. they play by different rules. seriously.

Of course public schools have a lot more problems, but it's not because the "gubmint" runs them. The public school system takes on the extremely difficult task of educating ALL children, no matter how toxic an environment they come from, no matter what problems they may have. All children deserve to be educated right up to a university degree. Why is the USA the only developed country that has no comprehensive health care program for her citizens and the only country in the world who, right now, are making it more difficult for her children to get an education?                   You need to look at Kentuckys education system for public schools. The entire thing is fueled on money for the amount of kids you push through. Schools are directly paid by federal and state money regardless of whether a kid can read, write as long as teachers pass them. If you want tot teach in Kentucky you had better be able to push 100% of your students thru or your out. Public school kids have zero incentives to do any work and most kids do absolutely none! Its a joke.

                  Why dosen't Congress suck it up and do their constitutional duty and inact laws to make improvements, where needed, instead of doing nothing but complain that nothing is getting done?

                  It seems that they must wait to see what Obama is going to do next so that they'll know what to complain about.

                    Actually, it would significantly help the deficit problem if we eliminated the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and raise income rates to 46% and the capital gains tax to 25%. Add reforms to entitlements and the tax code and some defense cuts, and presto. Deficit solved.

                    BTW - if we don't change social security, it and the Federal government will collapse on itself. Those Trillions in Social Security really are only backed by the US Treasuries ability to print money.

                    Also the ACA cuts 500 Billion out of Medicare to fund the infra-structure of the ACA boards, exchanges, committies, and brown shirts.

                    I find it quite interesting that medicare advantage was supposed to end October 1. Some how Obama found billions to put a "trial replacement" program in place that will expire a few months after. Medicare Advantage was cut by the ACA and it's funding was part of the 500 Billion in savings. The geniuses on the Democrat side kind of forgot to fund it to passed the election so the seniors wouldn't be peed when they lose their bridge insurance that the republicans are supposed to be taking away from them and turn on the democrats in November.

                    Then there is the Student Loan Program. Seems Pelosi and company cut the interest rate in half and set it to expire before the election. Why? Nothing like trying to portray the republicans as against student loans and higher education. Obama's no saint on this either. According to Forbes magazine, the rate increase only affects those with new loans and only after their 6 months grace after school. Obama is portraying the increase as affecting all student loans which have been made.

                    The enemy is the Democrats, whom you trust, not the Republicans..

                        Yeah, tell the college students, go to school, take on huge debt and when you get out you will get a good job.

                        53% of 2011 graduates could not get work. Of those who did get a job, most had to take jobs outside their field of study for $20,000 - $30,000 per year to try to pay student loan debt ranging from $50,000 - $150,000.

                        People, wake up, the bottom line is get people in office who will let business perform instead of taking what some non-business oriented people think is more than business deserves.

                        If you want real improvement by the end of fiscal 2014, change the majority occupants of the Senate and the White House in November.

                                  Or they think, How much of my earnings will I be able to keep? Will a dollar buy anything? Will this debt be the end of of a great country? Will I be able to have a family and raise kids that can live the American dream? Or is that dream lost forever?

                                      Now even congress is beginning to use the word "socialist" to describe the truth of Obama's goal for his vision of America. Even Obama, feeling enboldened is beginning to act and feel like he has the mantel of a third world dictator. His words that are devisive on all things that are good about America; his attempts to sturrup the segments of society for class warfare; his hatred of religion; his forceful implementation of the European Socialist Model of healthcare; his delirious irrational drive to turn America into a third world nation with all the equality of one. America just isn't being fooled anylonger with his empty jive and hubris personality. The fake is a flake and everyone knows it.

                                          Patriotson, it is understandable you are terrified of kids getting educated without being fleeced by the banks on student loans. Why, if they get so smart, they will demand higher wages, God forbid. But keep in mind that letting them get a degree can be profitable for the rich. See, all those H1B visa engineers and computer gurus that US corporations need to run their business, got their education in free public universities in China and India. Socialism can actually help the rich by providing a large supply of skilled labor, so think about that before you bash it...

                                          Obama panders to the sheeple. His stock and trade has gone from hope and change to blame and shame. He acts as though he thinks he is Seinfeld - always mocking people to get the sheeple to believe his BS. Pure and simple, he is nothing more than a jerk. A true leader would run on his/her accomplishments but he does not really have any.

                                          He is sure to go down in history as the president who did the most damage to the US. I hope that during the run up to the election, Obama overexposes himself and get seen for the 2 faced liar he is.
