First Thoughts: Strengths on display

Romney’s and Obama’s strengths were both on display last night… But so were their weaknesses… Romney, as expected, sweeps the GOP primary contests of CT, DE, NY, PA, and RI… Gingrich: “We are going to look realistically where we are at”… Santorum still not 100% embracing Romney… Have both of these men ensured they’ll be speaking in the afternoon in Tampa?... Veepstakes watch: Rubio delivers foreign-policy speech… Ad watch: Priorities USA and Crossroads GPS up with new TV ads… And two incumbent Dems (Altmire and Holden) go down to defeat.

This photo combo shows President Barack Obama in Chapel Hill, N.C. on April 24, 2012, and Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on April 18, 2012 in Charlotte, N.C.

*** Strengths on display: For the two men who will square off for the presidency in November, Tuesday night displayed the strengths of each. As he swept last night’s five primary contests, Mitt Romney delivered one of his best speeches of the cycle, focusing on the economy and emphasizing his business background. “As I look around at the millions of Americans without work, the graduates who can't get a job, the soldiers who return home to an unemployment line, it breaks my heart,” he said. “This does not have to be. It is the result of failed leadership and of a faulty vision.” Romney also stated, “After 25 years, I know how to lead us out of this stagnant Obama economy and into a job-creating recovery.” Indeed, our recent NBC/WSJ poll found Romney leading Obama (40%-34%) on who would be better for having good ideas how to improve the economy.

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd explains Mitt Romney newest test – explaining why he should replace President Barack Obama.

*** Romney on the economy, Obama on likeability: Meanwhile, we saw President Obama address two audiences of enthusiastic college students -- and he’ll speak to a third today at the University of Iowa at 2:20 pm ET -- pushing for Congress to keep student loans low and reminding these students that his own situation was similar to theirs. “This shouldn’t be a partisan issue.  And yet, the Republicans who run Congress right now have not yet said whether or not they’ll stop your rates from doubling,” Obama said at the University of North Carolina. He added at the University of Colorado, “We only finished paying off our student loans about eight years ago. Think about that: I'm the president of the United States, and so here I am and we were writing those checks every month.” Then he slow-jammed the news with Jimmy Fallon, demonstrating personal skills that his GOP opponent doesn’t have.  And in our NBC/WSJ poll, Obama crushed Romney on being easygoing and likeable (54%-18%) and being compassionate enough to understand average people (52%-23%).

*** But weaknesses were also on display, too: But we also caught glimpses of weaknesses of both men, which will certainly come up again in the next six months. Romney last night laid out the “why not Obama” case very well, and that could be a powerful argument with nearly six in 10 thinking the country is headed in the wrong direction. Yet what was missing was the “why him?” In fact, he talked about his wife Ann and his father who grew up poor. But outside of his business background, he didn’t talk about himself. In addition, we were reminded that Romney will have a difficult time relating to others. “I’d say that you might have heard that I was successful in business. And that rumor is true,” he said. (Romney didn’t seem to realize that the line about “it’s still the economy, and we’re not stupid” needed a punchier/smirkier delivery.) For Obama, we were reminded that despite his enthusiastic audiences, this isn’t 2008. As the New York Times’ Peter Baker writes, “Mr. Obama is no longer the avatar of promise and possibility; he is the incumbent presiding over an anemic job market awaiting future graduates. He is a figure of compromised ideals asking for forbearance as he seeks to live up to the sky-high expectations he inspired the first time around.”

*** Romney’s sweep: As mentioned above, Romney -- as expected -- swept last night’s five GOP primary contests. With the Republican race effectively over since Rick Santorum’s exit earlier this month, Romney won either 60% of the vote, or close to it, in every state. In Connecticut (with 91% reporting), it was Romney 67%, Paul 13%, Gingrich 10%, and Santorum 7%; in Delaware (99% reporting), Romney 56%, Gingrich 27%, Paul 11%, and Santorum 6%; in New York (77% reporting), Romney 62%, Paul 16%, Gingrich 13%, Santorum 9%; in Pennsylvania (99% reporting), Romney 58%, Santorum 18%, Paul 13%, and Gingrich 10%; and in Rhode Island (99% reporting), Romney 63%, Paul 24%, Gingrich 6%, and Santorum 6%. And here’s NBC’s delegate breakdown after last night: Romney 844, Santorum 260, Gingrich 137, and Paul 79.

*** Gingrich: “We are going to look realistically at where we are at”: As for Gingrich, he made Delaware a do-or-die contest, and he didn’t win. And after his disappointing finish, he suggested that he may exit the presidential race in the coming days, NBC’s Alex Moe reports. “I want you to know over the next few days, we’re going to look realistically at where we are at” in the campaign, Gingrich told a crowd of just one hundred people at his election night rally, calling himself a “citizen” rather than a candidate. And this just happened this morning while Gingrich was campaigning in North Carolina today, Moe adds: Gingrich called Romney the nominee. “I do think it's pretty clear that Gov. Romney is ultimately going to be the nominee, and we'll do everything we can to make sure that he is, in fact, effective, and that we as a team are effective both in winning this fall and then, frankly, in governing."

*** Santorum still not 100% giddy about Romney: Santorum, meanwhile, announced on CNN last night that he will be meeting with some of Romney’s advisers today, and NBC’s Andrew Rafferty has confirmed that Santorum and Romney will meet together on May 4. But on CNN last night, Santorum didn’t enthusiastically embrace Romney. Here was the transcript, per NBC’s Morgan Parmet:

PIERS MORGAN: But you believe that Mitt Romney is the right guy?
SANTORUM: I believe he's the better--obviously, I believed I was the better choice, but then I'm not in this race anymore.
MORGAN: So he's won the race?
SANTORUM: He's won the race.
MORGAN: Is he therefore the right guy?
SANTORUM: Yeah, absolutely. He's the person that is going to go up against Barack Obama. It's pretty clear and we need to win this race. We need to beat Barack Obama.
MORGAN: You've just endorsed Mitt Romney
SANTORUM: Well, if that's what you want to call it. You can call it whatever you want.

*** Did Santorum and Newt hold out too long? After reading that exchange and also seeing Gingrich stay in the race probably a month too long (after not winning Alabama and Mississippi), we have this question: Did both Santorum and Gingrich hold out too long? What does Romney owe them now? Hope they enjoy speaking in the afternoon in Tampa.

*** Veepstakes watch: Marco Rubio will deliver a foreign-policy speech at the Brookings Institution at noon ET.

*** Ad watch: As we first reported on Monday, the pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA Action and the League of Conservation Voters have teamed up for a new TV ad to air in Colorado and Nevada. And we now have the ad -- it hits Romney for being “in the tank for Big Oil.” And Crossroad GPS has announced it’s going up with a $1.2 million ad buy in the Senate contests of Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, and Virginia.

*** Two Dem incumbents go down to defeat: Also in Pennsylvania last night, two Democratic congressional incumbents – Jason Altmire and Tim Holden – were defeated. Altmire lost to fellow Dem Rep. Mark Critz in a match-up of two incumbents due to redistricting. And Critz ended up winning due to old-fashioned labor’s boots on the ground; it was the old Murtha machine in action (and Critz used to work for Murtha). Bottom line: Altmire got out-organized. Meanwhile, Holden lost to a political neophyte. But with Congress’ low approval ratings, it is surprising when these longtime members lose?

Both store front dummies, but as long as Soros holds Obama's purse strings, he'll prolly win, plunging this country into a civil war and poverty beyond belief....

Look's like my decision this year will be easy again. I will not vote for anyone that belongs to a religious cult. I have lived in Utah and experienced first hand how evil and discriminating to others the LDS Church people can be.

If Romney is serious, he should first eliminate the tax free status of his church.

No wonder the Mormons discriminated against you. You're a bigot! They probably did not feel the love coming from you so they shut you out.

I am over sixty-five and I am still working. I am working because two wars and no oversight on Wall Street means that my Social Security check is barely enough for groceries and my retirement fund retired long before I did. I would love to retire. I'm tired of working. But I have to eat. So pardon me while I struggle to survive. I won't vote for Romney because I know the Republican agenda includes cutting the hell out of social security and medicare. If they do that, I will either starve to death or die of some curable illness I can't afford to treat. I am sick to death of Republicans telling me that making the rich even richer is somehow going to benefit me. Because it hasn't so far, and I'm not holding my breath waiting for it to happen. Republicans are all about eliminating any benefits to the middle class and concentrating all the wealth at the top. Trickle down economics doesn't work. The money just keeps heading upward. There is less and less of it down here among the worker bees. They cut our health care. They cut our wages. And the big boys get their $10 million dollars bonuses for eliminating more jobs. Meanwhile those of us who still get paychecks have to work more and more hours and make less and less money. That's trickle down economics. Which is another way to say, "Let's screw the middle class and pretend we're doing them a favor."

Obama has done more to harm the middle class than any Republican. His class rhetoric is all smoke and mirrors. We continue to hemmorrhage money spending much more than we take in. Blaming the rich is a weak arguement. If the Buffett rule passed, it would fund the government ONE DAY. We don't hear too much of that fact in the media.

        #339.1 - Thu Apr 26, 2012 9:55 AM EDT

You actually believe that any republican plan to SAVE medicare has anything to do with people over 65? ABSOLUTELY NOT. You have been lied to the the libs. You will keep all benefits. It will change for those in their 40's. So feel free to vote for Romeney so your children can have at least some benefits. Doing nothing is NOT an option. That's what the libs want to do.

            Romney committed voter fraud

Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney has survived the heated GOP nominating contest so far without attracting significant attention to what may become a general election issue: allegations that he committed voter fraud in 2010. In January 2010 the former Massachusetts governor proudly cast a ballot for Republican Scott Brown in the special election to replace the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. He didn’t own property in the state at the time, and had registered to vote listing his son’s unfinished basement as his residence. Massachusetts law defines a residence for voter registration purposes as “where a person dwells and which is the center of his domestic, social, and civil life.” Anyone found guilty of committing voter fraud faces up to five years behind bars and a fine of $10,000.

The issue was first raised last year, after long-shot GOP candidate Fred Karger traveled to Romney’s former community of Belmont and interviewed members of his former church — who informed Karger that the Romneys had moved — and their former realtor, who told him, “Oh, they moved to California.” Additionally, Karger claimed that Ann Romney told him that the couple lived in California.

Therm: You don't see a problem with a story that excludes the statements from the County Clerk saying that Romney did not commit voter fraud? Even it you THINK Romney paid off the County Cleark. Why is this information left out?

You don't have to own property to vote in any state.

Being a Chinese student visiting from Beijing where we drive a Ford Focus made by FORD INC. in Chengdu, fly a plane with an Engine made in Shanghai by GE, etc. and have jobs and education, but most important now dream of landing first on Mars, visiting America it is now obvious to me why most Chinese think very little of your socialist news organizations and president Obama is considered so poorly. We think Americans in General are good people despite your news. Watch CCTV in English and close your eyes. One example is Obama's lies like his speech on Student Loans:

                    The facts are:

                    1. Obama's Loan Bill that is not really "HIS" would not pay off one of your student loans. (Educate Yourself of the bill).

                    2. The bill already in existence would allow borrowers to a new "Pay As You Earn" plan introduced by the Congress under Bush. It doses not mean you are exempt from payment just a longer period at lower payments.

Lenders would prefer to be able to hang on to those debts in perpetuity, and not give people a fresh start. The loans would become more like Credit card debt. These issues were not around when there were jobs. One does have to give Obama credit for his ability to lie so well with a smiley face.

As much as I am not a fan of Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) the republicans will vote to keep the rates lower. Obama by the creation of $15 Trillion in Deficits needs trickle down money, needs revenue period but his socialist view will not allow his small knowledge of economics realize this is his problem of no jobs and huge Government entitlements.

Obama at Duke University trying to sympathize with College Students in a desperate attempt to gin up votes. Problem is, Democrats wanted student loan tax rates to double, that's why they wrote the bill that way, and passed it.
As usual, Obama voted "present" by skipping the vote, then issuing a statement in support of the bill.

                    Quote

In 2007, then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama missed two votes on the student loan interest bill that he now wants Congress to extend.

I thought Mr. Mao died!! How much has GE paid in the USA in Taxes? Zero. The company pays lots to China and creates lots of Jobs. I plan to work for them after my graduation.

As a student you are still learning. In the interest of continuing your education, I will enlighten you of a few things. The president is not responsible for "15 trillion in deficits". The bulk of the debt is due to policies that were implemented before he took office (e.g. two wars, Medicare part D, massive tax cuts). The president never claimed the "loan bill" as his. The U.S. Senate does not allow "present" votes.

Finally, I would think that you would know the definition of "Socialist". The news organizations in this country are not controlled by the government and are primarily private for profit corporations.

One last thing; don't sh!t where you eat.

If the New York Post and Politico say it then it must be the whole truth. They would never print positive stories showing Bain, and Mitt Romney in a positive light as it might get him elected our next POTUS.

                        #342.2 - Thu Apr 26, 2012 10:11 AM EDT

I am not aware of any organization outside of Fox and the GOP that have said anything positive about Bain. There are of course thousands of Americans who lost their jobs, retirement, healthcare and homes because of Bain, I doubt they have anything positive to say about it either.

I did some research on the claims Romney destroyed jobs for personal gain. And guess what? It's pure baloney!!! Check out this site,

                          http://www.theblogmocracy.com/2011/06/14/mitt-romney-job-killer/

then do a search on the four companies listed in the article. One gained about 3,500 jobs, another is doing very well with operations in 43 countries to serve more than 25,000 medical customers. And the article also stated,

Some analysts say Bain should not be blamed for the company's failure, noting that a wave of cheap imports forced nearly half of the U.S. steel industry into bankruptcy during that period. Another company set up around the same time, in which Bain took a minority stake, Steel Dynamics in Fort Wayne, Indiana, thrived.

Sometimes business's have to cut back on expenses, and jobs or go broke with everyone losing their job. And yes, business's use this to get rid of slackers they would've had problems with getting rid of when things were good! Anyone who works for a living has had coworkers that watch the clock more than the job! And those are the ones who usually complain the loudest when let go!

I backed Obama in the last election, and completely lost faith when he and his majority did absolutely nothing the first two years of his presidency. And now without a record to run on, he's repeating the same speeches, without the promises he's broken made in the last election. Keeping interest on student loans low? Without a job, they can't pay off a loan at "0" percent! Immigration Reform? Making a minimum of 12,000,000 illegal aliens legal, and adding them to the job market is really going to help citizens, and legal immigrants of hispanic descent find a job, or a better one!!! He had two years to push immigration reform and did nothing, and is now playing them for suckers again! How stupid does he think they are?

Romney is right to be talking about job creation considering the unemployment rate, but his record in the private sector is one of job destruction. As Politico detailed, Romney’s company, Bain Capital, was in the business of buying up distressed companies, slashing them to bits, and then selling them off, resulting in lots of job losses:

                            – In 1992, the firm acquired American Pad & Paper. By 1999, the year Romney left Bain, two American plants were closed, 385 jobs had been cut and the company was $392 million in debt. The next year, Ampad was forced into bankruptcy.

                            – Bain Capital and Goldman Sachs bought Dade International for about $450 million in 1994. The firm quickly fired or relocated at least 900 workers. Over the next several years, it sunk increasingly into debt and laid off 1,000 workers. In 2002 — after Romney had left Bain — it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

                            – A 1997 buyout of LIVE Entertainment for $150 million resulted in 40 layoffs, roughly one in four of the company’s 166 workers. The job cuts affected all aspects of the company, from production and acquisition to legal and public relations.

                            – In 1997, Bain bought a stake in DDI Corp., a maker of electronic circuit boards. Three years later, Bain took the company public and collected a $36 million payout. But by August 2003, the company filed for bankruptcy protection, laying off more than 2,100 workers.

22 percent of the money Bain Capital raised from 1987 to 1995 was invested in five businesses — Stage Stores, American Pad & Paper, GS Indusries, Dade, and Details. These five made Bain $578 million in profit, even as all five eventually went bankrupt.

As the New York Post’s Josh Koshman wrote, “there’s little question made a fortune from businesses he helped destroy.” Travis Waldron noted today that Romney’s company also boosted its profits — and thus enriched Romney — by abusing offshore tax havens.

"cheap imports forced nearly half of the U.S. steel industry into bankruptcy during that period"

In that case, that steel company didn't need to pay Bain $16 million to fail.

Nice selective research! Here's mine with the link!

                                    http://americaneedsmitt.com/blog/tag/american-pad-and-paper/

Looking back, we can now see that Ampad didn’t go out of business, it simply changed ownership, and in the long run, it didn’t lose 385 jobs, it gained about 3,500.

                                    More of your research!

                                    – Bain Capital and Goldman Sachs bought Dade International for about $450 million in 1994. The firm quickly fired or relocated at least 900 workers. Here's what I found, with the link!

                                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dade_Behring

In 2002 the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but then reorganized and recovered in a spectacular way. Brad Pattelli was on the board of directors and an influential figure in the reorganization. By 2005, the firm employed more than 6,000 workers and had operations in 43 countries to serve more than 25,000 medical customers.

Looks like Romney has created more jobs than Obama has through his stimulus plan, and not at a cost of over $400,000 in tax payer money per job as the stimulus has!

I love how you guys leave out "the whole story"!

I don't think anyone could possibly more dishonest than our current president. I have caught him so many times making false implications, leaving out relevant facts, exaggerating and distorting information. During Obamcare debate, I even heard the liberal media refer to his explanations of cost as "less than honest".

I realize no honest politician will ever get elected or re-elected, but it would be nice to see a president occasionally try to speak honestly and explain things as they really are, not just all partisan politics.

The country is headed in the wrong direction. Bush-Cheney set the path that has taken us into the dark woods. Obama has tried to take us back into the daylight, but Congress likes the darkness.

Congress likes lobbyist contributions. Congress likes paying for 737 military bases worldwide while the American taxpayer suffers. Congress likes passing innocuous, meaningless legislation while the real issues are buried in their committees. Congress likes giving Israel $6.0 billion each year of American taxpayer money. Congress likes abdicating foreign policy to an Israeli zealot like Netanyahu threatening Middle East peace. Congress likes avoiding responsibility while pandering to lobbyists and vocal extremist groups.

Unfortunately Romney has pandered to so many extremist groups and flip-flopped on issues to the point of no credibility. The so-called "business" approach to government lacks tangible, identifiable positions on a vision for the country. His business experience is constructed upon down-sizing businesses, eliminating jobs and moving businesses off-shore. I fail to see where Romney has any sense of the needs of middle America nor how to fulfill those needs.

The USA has the lowest taxes since the 1950's and is far below the rest of the developed nations. Bush-Cheney forfeited regulation in order to have a housing growth bubble that caused a financial debacle worldwide. Many of Romney's supporters just want to avoid responsibility, have low taxes and complain all the time.

Obama is trying to fix eight years of irresponsible, corrupt Bush-Cheney leadership which brought the nation to its knees because of a unregulated Wall Street that collapsed; a housing bubble that burst because of high risk taking by banks; initiating two wars withoutpaying for them with taxes but instead borrowing $7.0 trillion from China that our children and grandchildren will have to pay; allowing corruption to penerate deep into the Whitehouse.

Obama is fixing the problems, but there are no quick fixes. It takes discipline and commitment.

It is a good rallying cry for all of us out here that are suffering from the economic stagnation/stagflation that has occurred since the Democrats gained control of the Congress back in 2007 and ran it into the ground with the help of a Republican President who never used his veto power to stop the expansion of government and the free for all spending that got us here. Unfortunately, Obama's Marxist beliefs, while attracting the poor underclass, will not solve our economic problems because it has never worked anywhere it has been tried.

We saw the true colors of both Obama and Romney in brief, unscripted moments this past week.

Romney made everyone uncomfortable with his ungracious and thoughtless comments about cookies donated to a photo-op by a popular local bakery. Obama, on the other hand, tried to put a college coed at ease when she unintentionally spilled ice yogurt on him.

Romney showed he is self-centered and felt entitled to something better. Obama showed his concern for someone else. These incidents tell in a nutshell why Romney isn't well-liked and Obama is; it also tells us Obama's initiatives are intended to help others while Romney's choice of the Ryan budget shows Romney's concern for helping the wealthy. Just ask the Georgetown University faculty that expressed opposition to the Ryan budget.

                                                                  Reply#355 - Fri Apr 27, 2012 3:57 AM EDT
