Gingrich loses again, signals exit from race

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich speaks to supporters in Concord, N.C. saying he will evaluate his position in the race over the next few days.

CONCORD, NC -- Newt Gingrich alluded that he may exit the presidential race in the coming days after a disappointing finish in the Delaware primary Tuesday night.
“I want you to know over the next few days, we’re going to look realistically at where we are at” in the campaign, Gingrich told a crowd of just one hundred people at his election night rally, calling himself a “citizen” rather than a candidate.
“We want you to know that as citizens, we are going to be right there standing shoulder by shoulder with you and that as we think through about how we can best be effective citizens over the next week or two – we are going to rely on you for help and you for advice,” he said, speaking at his first election night event in nearly two months.
The former House speaker finished nearly 30 percentage points behind Mitt Romney in Delaware’s primary -- a state Gingrich spent the majority of his time over the past month campaigning in. That was the state Gingrich said he hoped would bring him back into contention in the GOP race.
Though never referencing his poor finish in the election while speaking Tuesday night inside the Vintage Motor Club, Gingrich said he knew it would be a good night for his competitor.
“I want you all to understand that Gov. Romney is going to have a very good night and it is a night that he has worked hard for, for six years,” Gingrich said. “And that if he does end up as the nominee, I think every conservative in the country has to be committed to defeating Barack Obama and let’s be very clear about this.”
Gingrich, standing with his wife, Callista, by his side but no Newt 2012 signage in sight, assured his supporters in North Carolina, who do not take to the polls here until May 8,  that he would remain in the state this week and attend all his scheduled events.
While dodging most questions from reporters after the speech on the ropeline, Gingrich finally acknowledged “the results were clear enough” in Delaware tonight. He also signaled that he would not make his final decision about exiting the race before Sunday.
No matter when Gingrich exits the race, he promised to carry the conservative platform to the convention in Tampa, Fla., in the summer.
“We are committed to doing everything we can to make sure conservatism is in fact fully represented in Tampa, fully represented in the campaign, and fully represented in the next administration,” he said.

bigbenalaska - Wow, what freebies do I get if Obama is re-elected, can you please spell it out? I already know what I get if a Republican gets in the Whitehouse:
- More tax subsidies for Oil Corporations already making record profits. 4 billion must not be enough

- Tax subsidies and breaks for American corporations that export their jobs to other countries.

- 35+ million would have no health insurance and we as the American taxpayer are still paying for them.

- Lower Taxes for the wealth, and the continued squeeze on the middle class.

- Deregulation everywhere.

- Pizza is declared a vegetable because it used 'pizza tomato sauce'

Shall I go on?? Can we have the republicans add patches to their clothes like NASCAR drivers? I'd like to see who buys them proudly displayed everyday.

Obama/Biden 2012.

Gingrich would have been a great President and Romney will! The important goal is to make sure Obama's a one termer..... another 4 years and it will be all that harder to put the country back on track.

I think we've learned that a neighborhood organizer just isn't cut out to be a national leader.... lol

Another 4 years of Obama and the USA will be no different than Greece! We simplly can't afford another term like this one!

$5 trillion of addititiona debt and where did it get us? Just wasted spending! ...... just looking more and more like other unsuccessful socialist countries.... Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy all nations with a population dependent on government handouts! Not for me! Romney 2012

It simply AMAZES me the lack of education amongest some people who post here on MSNBC. Typical Republican Lemmings who think that we spend more on Social Welfare in this country than we do on Corporate Welfare. Break it down folks and do your own research.

About $59 billion is spent on traditional social welfare programs. $92 billion is spent on corporate subsidies. So, the government spent 50% more on corporate welfare than it did on food stamps and housing assistance in 2006.

Thanks to federal subsidies from taxpayers like you, CEO’s like G. Allen Andreas of Archer Daniels Midland was able to take home almost $14 million in executive compensation last year

You want to see this increase.. then by all means, elect one of those GOP clowns and watch our country move into a depression. Let's use our tax dollars to reward those that steal people's lifesavings.

Sally,
Please explain how the Ryan budget (which Romney supports) which gives more tax cuts to the rich, and cuts spending to social programs is going to do anything for the national debt? When you couple spending cuts with tax cuts you get nowhere closer to a balanced budget. Granted, we can't keep spending like we do, but all the republicans can come up with to solve the problem is more tax cuts. Guess what, in case you don't remember, taxes were cut under Bush over 10 years ago. By that logic why are we in a recession still? Obama did what he could with a congress that wants nothing more than gridlock. I guess you are a millionaire Sally, and think you pay too much in taxes?

Like Romney said it's all about the economy and we aren't stupid, but Obama sure was... no second chances.

And like Obama said in 2008, "if I can't fix the economy in 3 years it's a one term proposition!" Let's keep him to his word, this time!

@Sally - the reason Greece is in such bad shape is due to the austerity measures, rather than a stimulus like we used. The cuts the Repugs want to make would be similar to the austerity measures, and have similar results.

Gingrich is unfortunately the archetypical dishonest, narcissistic politician. Having him in any position of power (esp. the POTUS) would be a disaster. When he was in the House of Representatives before they disciplined him for ethics violations, he forced the Pentagon to take almost twice the number of B1 bombers they said they needed (at 1-2 billion apiece) because they were being made in his district. How can anyone possibly say they want this guy running the country?

“I want you all to understand that Gov. Romney is going to have a very good night and it is a night that he has worked hard for, for six years,” Gingrich said. “And that if he does end up as the nominee, I think every conservative in the country has to be committed to defeating Barack Obama and let’s be very clear about this.”

Newt, I'm a little confused with your tone here. I mean just YESTERDAY you said, a direct quote. “I think it’s a very substantial mistake for Gov. Romney to be pretending these primaries aren’t occurring and for him to be having, quote, ‘a general election’ speech tonight in New Hampshire. He’s the frontrunner but he’s not the nominee and I think it’s a little insulting to the people of these states. I think it’s a little bit presumptuous. There’s a big difference between being the frontrunner and being inevitable and I think he is mistaking the two."

Certainly a LOT less tough guy than the Newt who threw these shots, ALL in the last few months....

"Governor Romney was first an independent, then repudiated Reagan-Bush, then voted for Paul Tsongas, the most liberal candidate in the ‘92 campaign, then ran to the left of Teddy Kennedy in 1994."

"He doesn't fit culturally, he doesn't fit ideologically."

"As governor of Massachusetts Romney was pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, pro-tax increase and pro- gun control. Now that makes you a moderate in Massachusetts but it makes you pretty liberal in a Republican primary."

"This is a man whose staff created the PAC, his millionaire friends fund the PAC, he pretends he has nothing to do with the PAC, it's baloney. He's not telling the American people the truth."

"I would just say that if Governor Romney would like to give back all the money he’s earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over his years at Bain that I would be glad to then listen to him."

"The fact is,three out of four Republicans rejected him."

"I think Santorum and I are both going to be defining Romney out of the mainstream of the Republican Party."

"Do we want a Massachusetts moderate who, in fact, will be pretty good at managing the decay, but has given no evidence in his years in Massachusetts of any ability to change the culture or change the political structure or change the government?"

          And my personal favorite....

I'm not a Romney hater, but I do not believe he can take on Obama and I do not believe he is a real conservative."

Now, when Newt inevitably endorses Mitt Romney is he going to tell us which of those quotes he didn't really mean?

Does NBC actually pay people like Alex Moe to write articles that say things like "we are going to be right their"? These are errors that supposedly are made only by 7th-graders, not paid journalists on major international news sites. Not to mention the "editor" who didn't notice it in the very first paragraphs. Unbelievable. And of course then we have to suffer through the endless misspellings and mispunctuations and grammatical errors of almost all the commenters AFTER the article. We really have turned into a society of functional illiterates and worst of all, THEY DON'T CARE! If you correct them, they ridicule you, cursing you with MORE misspelled words! Laugh or cry, I can't decide.

You are absolutely right, torquemadaxiv. Btw, I honestly did catch this right off the bat: "their" instead of "there." To tell the truth, most people are notoriously bad spellers and users of incorrect word forms like Moe did in this article. But I would think that the bar would be set a little higher for a journalist & editor.

It appears that we're all human after all. Have you never made a typo?

          • 3 votes
          #14.1 - Wed Apr 25, 2012 7:42 AM EDT

A reasonable question. Yes I make a typo now and again, although I strive mightily not to, even in emails, which cyber freaks long ago proclaimed exempt from such concerns. Well that takes care of that. I don't think however that I would make such an egregious error in a major article to be posted online on one of the world's most important news sites. I just wouldn't. But even if I did, I'd expect the editor to catch it. You are right about setting the bar higher for paid writers. That's all I ask. I'm a professional writer myself but don't expect those who are not to be perfect; but I do expect better of Mr. Moe and/or his putative editor. Meanwhile your clean copy, which mine apparently elicited, was a welcome antidote to the rest.

Im going to miss Newt. The things I will miss are, In no particular order,

          1. His foul temper

          2. His overwhelming sense of ego.

          3. His arrogance.

          4. The moon colony.

          5. $2.50 gas

          6. A rousing game of pin the blame on Obama!

Newt never had a chance. He likes to think he matters. He doesnt. He was cooked the first time he lied about being a historian rather then a lobbyist. He was overcooked and rubbery, when he talked about colonies on the moon. He was ruined and tossed in the garbage with his poor sportsmanship.

One final note about his $2.50 gas plan. He is partly responsible for higher gas prices because of the supply of gasoline hes used to burn all those bridges.

Newt, remember to turn out the lights when you leave. You will be the last one out the door as the rest of your rats are abandoning your sinking ship. Remember the guy who walked up to you and told you to get out because you look rediculous! You should have heeded his advice and saved yourself a whole lot of money and dignity, what little dignity you had after resigning in disgrace for all the crap you pulled in Congress!
