WILMINGTON, Del. – Newt Gingrich hinted he may withdraw from the presidential race if he has a poor showing in the Delaware primary Tuesday – a state where he has been actively campaigning for several weeks.

Republican presidential candidate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich speaks during a campaign stop in Buffalo, N.Y., Friday, April 20, 2012.
"I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing," Gingrich told NBC News in an exclusive interview on Monday. "We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night and we will look and see what the results are."
He acknowledged that he would have to "reassess" his campaign depending on how he fares in Delaware, a winner-take-all state with 17 delegates at stake.
"This has been a good opportunity for us, we have been here seeing a lot of people,” Gingrich said. “We have got really positive responses and I would hope we would do well here – either carry it or come very, very close."

Newt Gingrich is presented with a Delaware flag following a speech at the state GOP headquarters in Wilmington, DE Monday night, April 23.
Governor Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee, is expected to turn the page in his election night speech in New Hampshire tomorrow and shift his focus to the general election. This, according to Gingrich, is a "mistake."

"Gov. Romney is clearly the frontrunner but that doesn't mean he is inevitable,” Gingrich told a roughly 50 person crowd inside the Delaware GOP headquarters here. “It is very dangerous for frontrunners to start behaving like they are inevitable because the voters might decide that’s not so true. Frankly, I think it is a mistake for Romney to kick-off his general election campaign tomorrow in New Hampshire. He has about half the votes he needs to be nominated."
Speculation remains high that Gingrich will exit the GOP race this week, especially he rescheduled his trip to North Carolina several times.
Gingrich's future hinges on Delaware
The Speaker heads to North Carolina tomorrow for a tour of the Billy Graham Library. The campaign also added an "election night rally" in the Charlotte area, which Gingrich has not held since late February.
As Gingrich remains in the race, his Secret Service detail remains alongside him. As questions are raised about the cost to taxpayers while the Speaker continues campaigning with an entourage of agents, Gingrich says he sees no problem with it and finds it "goofy" that people question if he should get rid of the detail.
"I mean, I am a candidate. We have exactly what we are legally supposed to have. Nothing more and nothing less," Gingrich told NBC News.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. I forget who said it but it's true. Newt knows he should just bow out, and go away. Mitt, is determined to double down on George W Bush's methods. Make the most powerful military in the world bigger. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, there hasn't been any competition, but grow it bigger anyway. Pay for it by cutting benefits for Disabled Veterans, and virtually everything else. Keep revenues where they are, and balance the budget while spending more than we are now. What a plan.
Wish Newt would stay in, a Newt / Paul independent run, Romney / (who cares) for the republicans and the best man for the job (Obama) wins!!
Many years later, it has become evident that Newt thinks he should be president, much like Al Gore thought he should be. Both are so full of themselves that they excrete from every orifice,
Wade -
And come November, you can add "Mitt" to that list.
Obama/Biden - 2012
Ah i see you also added Obama to the end there. Good job, considering his power trip for the past few months, starting with signing away the right to due process, free speech, and other individual freedoms.
Because I am totally protected against anything the far right will do to the middle class and poor people of our country, I hope the republicans, with the help of the independents, elect Romney. Once done, I hope that he, and the republican party, do everything they have been proposing over the past few years. When they are done with the country, the American people will experience a true awakening. This is not going to be pleasant undertaking, but I am convinced that this is necessary to make some of you realize that the republican party is dedicated to assisting the rich in become wealthier. They don't even pretend to care about the middle class and poor. However, they are wise enough to convince you to support policies that's not in your best interest. When you realize what life is going to be like without social security, medicare, Medicaid, health care, the usual tax deductions... maybe you will see the error in your biased thinking. Four years of the policies they've outlined for the country, and those who support the right winged agenda will be forced to realize the ignorance of their actions. Some people can't be told that it is not wise to touch the fire. They must be burned, and experience the pain, before they'll believe it is not a wise decision. I think I'll vote republican this year. Go for it America.
Tyrone, when the U.S. loses it credit rating sometime in the next two to three years, the government will be unable to borrow money and the safety net will collapse. That is when the middle class and poor will suffer. If we can enact the Ryan plan or something similar, we can slow the growth of government and can move toward a balanced budget. This may prevent us from suffering from total collapse.
The first year we save $36 billion, the second year $75 billion, the third year $120 billion, the fourth year $167 billion and so on. Within 10 years, we balance the budget. Since we are taking action to balance the budget, our credit rating will probably stay intact.
If we continue Obama's spending spree, we crash and burn in a couple of years.
No, we cannot tax our way out of this problem. If we confiscate all assets of every U.S. billionaire, we can pay the deficit for 16 months. If we tax the top 20% of income earners at 100% of income, we can pay off maybe 80% to 90% of the national debt; but, then we are back to square one going back into the hole of debt. The only way out is to control spending.
I support everything I wrote in the above, and I consider your comment to be nothing more than the opinion of a person who refuse to accept the logic in my post. Elect Romney and enjoy the next four years of hell. Your comment on Obama and spending is flawed, and you are approaching it from an unrealistic point of view. Had he not spent what he did, the economy would have disintegrated from the damage done by Bush. It seems that everyone knows this but you.
The only time our credit rating was questioned was when the republicans refused to act on extending the debt ceiling. The only time. Honesty seems to be an elusive concept to some.
Tyrone, I assume the CBO estimates of deficits of $800 billion to $1 trillion for each of the next 10 years are needed keep the economy from slipping back into recession again. Just like the stimulus that created 2.1 million jobs at $787 billion, that is almost $400,000 per job created. If the money had gone to the private sector as tax breaks could we maybe have created 8 million jobs?
Is it logical to assume that when our debt hits 130% of GDP like PIGS that the rating agencies will treat us differently than they did the Euro-zone?
We can slow the growth of government and not hurt those who truly need help. It means some wealthy seniors may pay more for medicare. That the age to qualify for full social security may continue to gradually increase to 70 rather than just 67. It may mean that instead of the 2700 page monsrosity for healthcare, we adopt the Republican alternative. It may mean returning to the Clinton welfare reforms of 1996.
Bruce...what you are proposing we did in the Bush years. How did that work out...oh yeah losing 750,000 jobs a month. Just look at 2 states right now, Wisconsin gave more tax cuts to the rich and cut entitlements since 2010 and they have lost 23,000 jobs...Illinois has raised taxes on the rich since 2010, and they have created 36,000 jobs. Seems like your logic is strewed a bit.
If you think the Bush years worked then vote for Romney, he is adopting all of Bush's policies to take us right back there, but then dont cry when you dont have a job, a house, or food to feed your children, because if you arent rich they want you on the street.
Deb, What did not work was the mortgage market starting with Fannie and Freddie. In the mid 2000's the Bush White House warned that the mortgage situation was not sustainable and recommended that Congress oversee correcting the process.
Barney Frank (a Democrat who's life partner made millions from these sub-par loans) and Chris Dodd (also a Democrat) said everything at Freddie and Fannie was fine. Meanwhile banks were offering $500K loans to people without income checks.
Sub-par mortgages were bundled into collateralized debt obligations by the investment banks. These banks were headquartered in New York. Tim Geithner who is now Obama's treasury secretary was the chair of the New York Fed at the time. Where was his oversight? These CDO's brought down the financial markets.
It was not Bush's policies that brought down the market and caused the job losses, it was these horrible lending policies that Democrats ignored while their friends and families made millions that destroyed the economy.
Florida, has cut taxes and cut entitlements and our unemployment rate under Governor Scott dropped from 10.4% to under 9% since January of 2011. The cutting of expenditures without adding new taxes seems to work here.
Deb, I just need to mention that Illinois had ~ 5581600 people employed in 12/09 and has added ~ 116400 jobs since then. This is a 2.08% increase in jobs over 29 months. This compares to Obama's job growth of 1.43% between 2009 and 02/12. The .65% difference in job creation between the nation and Illinois probably is not statistically significant.
Newt never had a chance at all and he needs to lose at least 75 pounds
because if he were any fatter Goodyear would use him as a blimp.
If he doesn't earn some more money soon, his wife will likely leave him. She obviously has expensive taste.
It is about time that Newt faces reality. He does have some good ideas and should serve as a sounding board to the Romney campaign. Of the final four candidates, I think Romney is the strongest and most intelligent. I am glad he came out ahead. I think Newt was probably the most creative and definitely has good ideas. Santorum was the best debater (if I was grading as a debate judge on skill, Rick would definitely win). Paul's ideas left a lot to be desired especially on national defense and foreign policy. However, any of the four are better than Obama.
I was Romney supporter in 2008 and was very upset that Crist came out for McCain and knocked Mitt out of that race. I feel he could have won the 2008 election on the economy and we would not be on the edge of disaster now.
I am very afraid that Obama will win and we will find that by 2014 or 2015 that our credit rating is downgraded just as far as PIGS. By the way, I understand that the Dutch are about to be downgraded and that could further exacerbate the Euro-crisis.
Very intelligent dialog. Thanks for contributing to a sound discussion. Some here are obviously not as informed and are simply haters.
. . . what!?! . . . he's just now thinking about taking "a deep look"? Wow, doesn't that speak volumes.
Come on Newt. Send lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader , bankrupter and Etch A Sketch Champion to your $2 trillion dollar moon colony. I am sure that the lying, pathetic right wing nut will be able to find an off-planet bank to hide his money.
Say FRANK, didn't you miss a few racial epathets in your vile, hate filled, little rant?
So now it's not only "Class Warfare" but racial warfare as well?? Good to know. And I assume that qualifies you as the epitome of racial tolerance and brotherhood? LOL
Just remember, it's only "Class Warfare" when you critize the Rich, when Republicans demonize the poor and then do everything in their power to keep them poor, that's not class warfare. Just keep telling yourself that and you'll actually start to believe it. Enjoy your little hatefest.
Yes Frankie. But my rant was truthful. It was not just pathetic stupid right wing radical cracked teanut idotic remarks. You can say whatever you want, you can lie as much as your facist obstructionist brain wants you to.
In fact, you probably need a personal vaginal ultrasound from the Pope's boy Sanitarium, to find out what happened to your barn.
Newt, it seemed you had a shot at one point, but now we need to come together and allow Romney to concentrate on putting together a solid campaign that will send Obama back to Chi-Town from whence he came...with Good Riddance. You gave it a shot...you are an excellent historian and could serve the party well in some capacity starting 2013. Godspeed....
that will send Obama back to Chi-Town from whence he came
Dream on Brutus. Mitten's is gonna have his ass handed to him in November. Mark my words on that.
Obama/Biden - 2012
Brutus, thanks for being pragmatic. The only way we are going to save the U.S. economy is to support the the Republican nominee and to win this fall. I hope everyone can argue the facts. It seems that very few of the Obama supporters are sticking to the facts. They just call Mitt names.
Vote for women, vote for the middle and lower class, vote for our country, Vote Obama!
I'm over it.
Who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just out of curiosity, why do so many of you make obviously false comments about the president just to support your obviously biased views? Does truth or facts mean anything to you, or does supporting your right winged views dominate your behavior? I hope you realize that your behavior is childish and it displays a detachment from reality. Just thought you wanted to know what others think of you. By the way, I didn't like George as a president, but I never told lies on him. However, I did enjoy talking about the documented silly things he did. He was food for comics.
Just out of curiosity, why do so many of you make obviously false comments about the president just to support your obviously biased views?
Tyrone - Because false statements, and fear tactics, is all they got. They can't openly run on a platform of: We don't give-a-@!$%# about the middle class because the rich aren't paying us for that. their paying us to do their bidding!
So very true.
Tyrone, what lies are being told about the president. Is the federal deficit this year $1.2 trillion? Is the national debt $15.6 trillion? Are we not rapidly approaching a national debt of 130% of GDP where Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain (PIGS) had their credit ratings slashed and G and S had to issue default swaps on their bonds (at between 20% and 25% of face value).
Our country is in serious trouble if we do not reverse our spending habits we will have our credit rating ruined and will be in default on our debt by the end of the next four years. I like Obama as a person;but, he is spending 33% more than he is taking in and I cannot support him for president.
Bruce...you blame Obama for the spending? Congress holds the purse strings. How is it when we have a republican in office all the spending is blamed on the democratic congress, but if we have a democrat in office its blamed on the president. I agree our spending is out of control, but in all fairness if we didnt do the stimulus the economy would be a depression today. Now if congress would actually allow us to tax the rich a little more and bring in some revenue it would ease things up some. It wont fix the problems entirely and yes we need to look at fixing our entitlement programs to keep them solvent. But we dont need to just cut things to the middle class and poor and give to the rich. That doesnt work, it has been proven it doesnt work.
Newt was never in the race. He is just to coy to have known it.
I really don't believe that Americans were able to forgive him for going after Bill Clinton the way he did; all the while he was cheating on his own wife. Just something about that that won't stop reeking.
good - bye newt - see ya,,, we could care less newty, see ya, get goin, bye newty,,, good ridence ~ !!!!!!
NO! NO! NO! Tell me it ain't so. The weekly clown review is going to be over. Where oh Where will I get my laughs from? Oh well, I guess I will just have to wait for Willard to make a fool out of himself again to get my weekly laughs. I can't wait until Willard get dumped on by President Obama in the debates. Poor Richie Willard he will find out the hard way "It's NOT his turn"
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Don't worry Sarge, there's still a whole lotta monkey's left in that GOP barrel to laugh at before this thing is over.
Columbus discovers America! Most people thought Gingrich had already dropped out! Talk about a silly delusional old fool. Truly there is no fool like an old fool. Gingrich, please crawl back under your rock and let the real contender Romney do this right and boot Obama to the curb.
Geez, I wonder which one of Willard the Weathervane's postions will be the next to do a 180 reversal on??? Let's see, it can't be on college tuition aid cause he just did a reversal on that one today. LOL
Stay tuned folks as Willard now tracks back to the middle after proclaiming himself a "Severe Conservative".
Is he still in the race? I guess hes dropping out by popular demand, hugh.
Newt "Hints" he might leave the race. In a month he'll simply say, "I never said I was leaving"!
Kick him out!
I didnt know he was still in the race. "Ooooh Newt you've done it again"
Newt who? What race? It's over. Obama is the next president. Good job repubs.
Um, news flash! Newt was never more than a speed bump and hasn't been relevant for months.
every person that thought this clown was electable shares in the blame of why gop candidates are not taken seriously.
Newt is a fine example of what power and greed will do to a man, and in his case the slim he leaves behind that we have to deal with. Rotten through and through. Much like most of the republican party and the billionaires that pull their strings.
I'll take my chances with Obama.
Berndog...with that attitude,if you are careful, you may not end up as the main course at an Indonesian barbeque. St.Bernards are considered a delicacy. :o)
I do agree that Newt must leave the public arena and go away now. Spend his time writing a memoir. Leave us alone.
Cheers.
