Romney hosts Rubio in Pennsylvania in coy VP audition

CHESTER TOWNSHIP, PA -- Florida Sen. Marco Rubio displayed flashes of the personal intensity and articulate conservatism that have prompted hopes that Romney would select Rubio as his running mate.

At his first joint appearance with the presumptive nominee since endorsing Romney last month, Rubio acted to bolster Romney in a way to underscore speculation about his role on the Republican ticket this fall.

Declaring Rubio an "extraordinary leader" before a crowd of more than 700 here in this Philadelphia suburb, Romney joined with Rubio for what more or less amounted to a vice presidential audition, though neither Romney or Rubio were eager to comment on those prospects at a press conference and subsequent town hall meeting.

"The process for selecting a vice presidential running mate is just beginning," Romney told assembled reporters at a press conference, his first since March 16th. "We're looking at various legal resources to help with in that process, accounting staff and so forth to take a look at tax returns and things of that nature.”

For his part, Rubio, a freshman senator, refused to comment altogether on his qualifications for the number two job.

"I’m not talking about that process anymore," Rubio said in response to a question about whether he was experienced enough to become Romney's vice presidential nominee.

But if he was cool to questions about his potential role in a future Romney administration, Rubio showed fire on the stump as he fielded questions from voters alongside Romney, frequently doubling down on Romney's policy positions.

After Romney told his audience it would be "simply unacceptable for Iran to get a nuclear weapon," Rubio took the mic and went further, calling the possibility of Iran getting a weapon "so horrifying" that "there is no cost too high to bear to prevent that from happening."

The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio also made reference to his own personal history in response to a question about the role of entitlements and government in society, praising his parents and the American values they instilled in him.

"Why am I here today with you? Why did I get to serve in the United States senate? Why have I been privileged to have opportunities they didn't? It isn't because I worked harder than they did. It isn't because I'm smarter than they were. Its because I had something they didn't: the privilege and honor of being born in the single greatest society in all of human history," Rubio said, drawing loud applause from a crowd that seemed to hang on his every word.

And while Rubio's fire, and humor (He joked about his wife telling him to buy an exercise bike because he was beginning to look "too senatorial.") provided a compelling contrast with Romney's cooler persona, the two appeared to lack some of the personal chemistry that was obvious between Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan, another likely candidate to join the vice presidential short list, as they campaigned together earlier this month in Wisconsin.

At least one vital policy issue hangs in the air between the two men: Rubio's Republican answer to the immigration reform DREAM Act, which Romney told reporters he intended to study further, but upon which the took no firm position. Romney said he was likely to roll out his own, more comprehensive, set of immigration policy proposals closer to the fall election.

“You know I anticipate before the November election we’ll be laying out whole series of policies that relate to immigration and obviously our first priority is to secure the border, and yet we also have very substantial visa programs in this country. I’ve spoken about the need to have a visa system that’s right-sized for the needs of our employment community," Romney said. "And so how we adjust our visa program to make it fit the needs of our country is something I’ll be speaking about down the road."

Where are Romney's tax returns?

Seriously, what does that have to do with him being a good president. He released his most recently filed tax return, and he has promised to release this year's return. This is almost as stupid as the debate over President Obama's birth certificate. Really, tax returns don't much other than the fact he paid his taxes in accordance with U.S. law.

Wasn't it last week that Rubio said he was too inexperienced to be VP? Guess he was busy getting experience over the weekend.

Kurt, this is a job interview and we're doing the screening. These days employers look at facebook pages and credit reports to get a sense of an applicant's character. A lot can be revealed about one's character in a tax return...just ask Al Capone!

What about the freudian slip Rubio made the other day when Rubio said... "when I'm Vice President"?

Now we know why Rob-ne has Rubio on a lease.

Rubio Slip: "If I Do A Good Job As Vice President"

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2012/04/19/rubio_freudian_slip_if_i_do_a_good_job_as_vice_president.html

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) makes a Freudian slip and refers to himself as Vice President when asked if he was interested in the position.

"I'm going to have the chance to contribute to that as a United States Senator. I'm excited about that prospect," Rubio said about his political future.

"Three, four, five, six, seven years from now, if I do a good job as a Vice President -- I'm sorry, as Senator, I'll have the chance to do all sorts of things," Rubio said today.

TO: Kurt-1234 who wrote:

We already know he'd be a lousy president as far as the middle class is concerned. Of course he'd be good for the mega-rich, like himself, but he'd ship all our jobs overseas and say he had to do it because American Workers earn too much money, after all that IS how he made his millions, and that's all he knows. As Governer of Massachusetts he came in 47th in job creation. That says a whole heck of a lot to me!

Romney better vet Rubio well -- he has ties to Columbian drug runners, if he is actually involved with them is not known at this time, but could be a big mess in a campaign. Plus the people of Florida do not like him, way down in the polls, not a good place to start.

That hardly sounds lie a good-bye. One thing the media is not reporting are Native American dig President Obama too.

Obama was adopted as an honorary member into the family within the Crow tribe that inhabited the reservation – who gave the presidential candidate a new name and new parents.

"Awe Kooda bilaxpak Kuuxshish" was the honorary name given to Obama meaning, "one who helps people throughout the land."

Obama was escorted out to the stage in Crow Agency, Montana arm-in-arm between his adopted parents: Sunny and Mary Black Eagle.

Obama thanked his honorary new parents – for giving him another name to tack on to the list, "I like my new name Barack Black Eagle. I mean that’s a good name."

Senator Obama, speaking for only 12 minutes told the Native American crowd of nearly 2,000 that he knows what it’s like to be an outsider – that his struggles being an African American, are similar to thiers.

This threat is so over-blown, especially in comparison to Pakistan, N. Korea, etc., but most Middle East experts believe Iran wants the capability, and not necessarily weapons, as a defense against being invaded and occupied as Iraq and Afghanistan have (each on Iran's borders). If the situation was reversed and the US was invaded and occupied...

But NO, there absolutely is a cost too high. And how about we learn from Afghanistan before we start another debacle? We have trained and armed Afghan soldiers who are not loyal and that the US is not able to financially sustain. Stop the craziness!

"Why am I here today with you? Why did I get to serve in the United States senate?

Good question.

Declaring Rubio an "extraordinary leader" before a crowd of more than 700 here in this Philadelphia suburb, Romney joined with Rubio for what more or less amounted to a vice presidential audition.

Really? The Blunt-Rubio amendment was "extraordinary" but not as Romney means, and other than that horrible bill, what extraordinary accomplishments can Rubio claim?

Rubio's Republican answer to the immigration reform DREAM Act, which Romney told reporters he intended to study further, but upon which the took no firm position.

Agreed that the US needs visas issued according to our need, however, the non-committal response is so Romney-like. The man has zero leadership skills let alone core beliefs.

Right now Portman looks more likely to be a VP pick, though Romney would do well to find someone more moderate to appeal to swing voters...

Because President Obama NEVER flubs when he's speaking. Like when he spoke of his "Muslim" faith, or Michelle spoke of "Kenya" being his "mother country." Nope, never misspeaks, except maybe when he doesn't have his teleprompter. For the record, I don't care if Obama claims to be Christian, Muslim, or atheist, and I do believe his birth certificate is genuine. But if you're going to criticize him for a Freudian slip, why not be fair in your criticisms, hmmm? Oh, because that would mean admitting that President Obama is as human and imperfect as any of the Republican candidates.

Is that all you've got against Rubio? Who cares if he does aspire to be VP for Romney? Obviously, no Republican can do anything right as far as you're concerned.

Obama in 2009: "If I can’t fix the economy in three years, you can call me former President Obama."

http://www.ihatethemedia.com/obama-in-2009-if-cant-fix-economy-fire-me

_______

We currently have sitting in the White House a man whose lack of qualifications for holding the office barely qualify him to lead a marching band - let alone the most powerful nation on earth.

And people here are saying that Romney, who has the business acumen to actually lead a company successfully and who isn't interested in selling the the United States down the river in the hope of impressing the likes of our good "friends" like the French by not flaunting our power in the face of the obvious weakness and lack of intestinal fortitude is not qualified???

Well, though I don't agree with Romney when it comes to subjects like abortion or gay rights, to say he isn't infinitely better qualified to be the leader of our country than someone who throws the political equivalent of a hissy fit, temper tantrum, when he realizes the Supreme Court is more likely than not to throw his "whether you like it or not you are going to get Health Care" travesty of government overreach and debt increasing albatross out with the trash, is an understatement.

Obama should be true to his own words when he said, "If I can’t fix the economy in three years, you can call me former President Obama."

Now there would be positive change we can count on!

Romney and the GOP continue to show their lack of understanding of the Latino world. Rubio is Cuban. Thinking that that would somehow bring in all the Latino voters from Mexico and other Latin American countries is like saying a candidate with Irish roots (or any other European country) would appeal to anyone of European descent just because of that alone. Rubio could possibly pull in Florida for the general since so many people of Cuban descent are there, but I don't think it would make that big a difference in most of the other big Latino population states.

This reminds me a lot of how Palin was supposed to bring in all of the women's vote especially the Hillary Clinton supporters, but that didn't work out like they thought. People also don't like pandering in a condescending way that lumps them in voting categories, which comes off as phony, which the GOP will be doing big time to try to woo the women, Latino, and Jewish voters. They should stick to old white men and southern white males. At least they have those demographics down as pretty solid GOP votes.

Rubio needs to take some speech lessons and learn proper sentence structure. His speech is annoying. Not only does he end sentences and statements with a conjunction (That is where I stand on that issue, so.), he also has a speech rhythm marred with a slight lisp, combined with a nasal tone. In other words, when Rubio speaks, he sounds like a teenager with much yet to learn. Not professional or presidential at all.

Could you imagine him on the 3am call?

"Like, this is President Rubio. Like, what is the problem, dude? I say let's nuke em, so..."

Keep looking Romney!

Actually, choose him PLEASE!

That reminds me: The word "landslide" is also a good song.

The GOP is in trouble with hispanic voters, because 1) GOP policies work against hispanics -and- 2) there is a real shortage of mormon hispanics.

Romney: Do you think we could "fake them out"and gain their trust if we feign interest in one of their own for vice president,....saaaaay Marco Rubio ? He could say some Spanish stuff and everything to give them a warm fuzzy about my campaign for corporate welfare.

"I'll try any phony, half-hearted,...OBVIOUS attempt to gain their trust".

It's so crazy,...it just might work.

Rubio is clearly a calculated choice made to gain hispanic votes - period. Don't be gullible.

It is so GLARINGLY obvious that it is insulting to the intelligence of the hispanic community.

I think ALL you drones of the left-right pardigm are out of touch.

Especially on this site. Obama circumvents Congress with dictorial controls, and 99% of you applaud. You would think that people so informed, so progressive, would understand that the U.S. is a REPUBLIC, the last one on the planet.

If you're so sure of Universal Healthcare, Universal Education, Universal EVERYTHING, then please move to a country far away from here that will indulge your every wish. What do you, the daily "progressives" here, do to better your community? Do you volunteer your time? Do you contribute to charity? Do you find a need for help around you, and fulfill?

What if armed militarized police came knocking at your door and asked for your contribution to MY health care? You would slam the door, because you don't know OR CARE about me. I'd like to hear from the regular posters here on how they make their community better, instead of the usual left-right NOTHING banther. Plus, by calling anyone who disagrees with him an "idiot" effectively gave green light to everybody else to stoop down to that middle-school banter level.

Actually - I who had raised horses was in Morroco - was at a benefit and we where served horsemeat - guess what - it was sweet - stringy and I ate it - not a person of twenty left the table

Actually of all the horses I raised - none of them I could eat - but I ate it there - so get a grip

We raised two 4 calves for 4-H - one we said the only we could keep him here was put him in the freezer - my daughter could not eat meat for two years - finally with her dark circles under her eyes I cooked a steak and said eat it

        We are carnivore people

Dog - pigs - chickens - cattle - and whatever we eat them!

How about veal - no problem - babies?

You would think that people so informed, so progressive, would understand that the U.S. is a REPUBLIC, the last one on the planet.

No, it's supposed to be a republic. It's being transformed into a corporatocracy before our eyes. The process has been ongoing since at least the 80s, and both parties are willing participants.

What do you, the daily "progressives" here, do to better your community? Do you volunteer your time? Do you contribute to charity? Do you find a need for help around you, and fulfill?

Yes, several. And I don't ask for receipts, either.

"Rubio took the mic and went further, calling the possibility of Iran getting a weapon "so horrifying" that "there is no cost too high to bear to prevent that from happening."

" No cost too high to bear"? Is he going to go and fight them ? Send his family members? Get the Florida Cuban community to send their love ones? Thought not. And the Republicans say the Democrats want another war , this time with Iran ?? Like give me a break.

So, he's taking applications for VP, is he? Last I checked, he doesn't exactly have a line of credible takers outside his door. Most of the people that the regressives want to run aren't just saying no, but hell no, followed by laughter.

I bet he ends up with Joe the Plumber as his running mate, and counts himself lucky.

I saw that too, Ursula..take a look at tax returns...when Romney himself won't produce the tax returns he gave McCain during his vetting for VP.

Is it too late to nominate Rubio for President for the Republicans? He seems more appealing than Romney.

The re is a big difference between a Mexican Hispanic and a Cuban. There is also a large culture difference between the two. Here in Texas the republicans have been trying to pass off Cubans as Mexicans for years. It hasn't worked yet.

Closer to fall? Maybe he figures if he releases his plans in the fall, his base can't dump him. For now, he'll just keep spinning and flip flopping his way through the summer--and hope no one notices and better yet, hope no rally attendees or reporters decide to ask real questions.

"Extraordinary leader"? The Blunt/Rubio amendment allowed employers to decide what medical procedures or medications insurance would provide based on their particular "moral" code. If the boss didn't believe in vaccinations, not covered; if the boss didn't believe in cancer screenings, not covered; didn't like birth control, not covered. Any "moral" objection would cancel coverage of whatever the boss decided. Extraordinary leader my foot.

Liberals really don't want an exchange of ideas, they don't want to discuss anything, they just want things their way according to their creepy ideology. Sounds a lot like Hitler, Stalin and Hugo Chavez.

If you don't believe me, just read the multitude of posts from "Crusty Redhead" to get an idea of the intolerance, the bigotry and the absolute disdain for all things conservative. Hey Katy, the left have not been told of any republican creative ideas by their media outlets. So get ready for a hail storm of hate about your comment.

What "creative" ideas? More tax breaks for the top 1% paid for by taxing the middle and lower class heavier? That's Ryan's "creative" idea. Nevermind trickle-down is the same tired old FAILED idea that has never succeeded once.

Yeah, give our public programs to the banks to gamble on Wall St. while grandma gets a voucher that leaves her paying an average 6000 dollars more a year for medical costs. Sounds real creative and effective.

Maybe if Romney would discuss any of his ideas we could see if we like them? If he has any.

At least the GOP has been creative with their ideas.

Creative?? What are you taking about?? Republicans haven't had a new idea in over 30 years. They have 3 answers to everything. Either give it a tax cut, deregulate it or bomb it.

Rubio,I think, will appeal only to the Cubans not the other Spanish speaking voters.

He appeals to people with conservative values. Those people come in all ethnicities.

Right...every time the Republicans have a minority or female its "desperation" or "pandering". The left does not own minorities or women.

Uh... no... Looks like another zero experience freshman politician. I agree Obama had no real political experience. But doesn't this smack of another " reach" when the GOP could use some serious experience and credibility?

I would think GOP'ers would not be pleased... Just my 2 cents as a registered independent voter...

I don't think it helps at all...

123ang - The left does not own Women and Minorities and let's throw in Hispanics?

Hey ang - yes they do

Where have you been under a bushel - the assault on women's rights - the assault on the Trayvon Martin case and let's let Hispanics "self deport"?

How about a ten year or eleven year old child raped by her father and she must carry that child - incest is okay? - or a rape victim has to prove she was raped and must carry that child?

The left owns us and we own them - we are not stupid as is so many of your insecure male counterparts

How is that Viagra working out for you and why are so many ads on TV about male impotence - don't see any ads about women not being able to perform - why is that?

Rubio has as much if not more experience than Obama had when he ran for the top office. He may have more than Obama has now.

And the Republicans said, and continue to say, he did not have sufficient experience to be president. So being a Republican suddenly gives Rubio sufficient experience?

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

If I were a cynic... I would say this "slip" by Rubio was planted and intended as a litmus test....

And Romney's statements on immigration fly in the face of suggesting Rubio as a running mate...

Old Vet - I thought the same thing. Suddenly, lack of experience is only a bad thing when you are speaking of Obama. I am from Florida and I think that the honeymoon is over down here for Repubs swept in during the Tea Party wave thanks to our crooked Gov Scott. He kind of took the romance out of it.

Rubio has outstanding Ethics Violations with the FL Republican Party, along with a real estate foreclosure. R-money/R-unethical is a losing GOP ticket.

Wasn't Rubio brought here from Cuba by his parents when he was five?

Would he call Cuba "the single greatest society in all of human history?"

A candidate MUST be USA born, like President Barack Obama.
