First Thoughts: Lookin' like '04 or maybe '96

NBC/WSJ poll: The Obama-Romney is looking like 2004 (or maybe even 1996), but it won’t be 1992… Obama running strong with his base and swing voters, but Romney has the edge on the economy… Testing Obama’s and Romney’s economic messages… The health-care albatross… Muncie and the story of America… Politicians behaving badly (we’re looking at you, McCain and Schweitzer)… Romney raises almost $12.6 million in March… Veepstakes: Time to cross Mitch Daniels off the list?... Daniels praises Lugar… And “Meet the Press” has Axelrod, Issa, and King.

/

U.S. President Barack Obama, Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

*** Lookin’ like ’04 or maybe ’96: Now exactly 200 days out until Election Day, a poll isn’t going to tell you who will win the presidential contest. But it can give you a good idea what it’s going to look like. And according to our brand-new NBC/WSJ survey, the Obama-Romney race appears it will resemble the close 2004 campaign, or maybe the 1996 contest. But it isn’t going to be 1992, when the incumbent got routed out of office. Per the NBC/WSJ survey, Obama leads Romney by six points among registered voters, 49%-43%, and the president’s approval rating stands at 49%-46% among all adults. Get this: At this very same point in the ’04 cycle, George W. Bush’s approval rating in our poll was a nearly identical 50%-46% with registered voters. Bill Clinton’s approval in April ’96 was slightly better than Obama’s, at 51%-41%. But at this point in ’92, you could already tell that George H.W. Bush was in serious trouble with an approval rating of 43%-52%. “It is going to look like 2004 or 2000,” said NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) added. “There are plenty of things that suggest it has a long, long way to go.”

*** Obama running strong with his base, swing voters; Romney with the edge on the economy: Digging inside our crosstabs, Obama holds an advantage with African Americans (90%-4%), Latinos (69%-22%), voters ages 18-34 (60%-34%) and women (53%-41%). In addition, he edges Romney among key swing groups like PURE independents who don’t even LEAN to any party (44%-34%), Midwest voters (47%-44%) and suburban women (48% -45%). Meanwhile, Romney is ahead among whites (52%-40%), suburban voters (49%-44%) and those expressing high interest in the election (49%-46%). Yet Romney’s real strength is on the issue that happens to be Obama’s weakness: the economy. By a 40%-34% margin, respondents believe Romney would be better when it comes to having good ideas for improving the economy. And Romney also edges Obama on changing business as usual in Washington. If you could lead on just two issues, those would be the two you’d pick if you’re Team Romney. The president, however, bests Romney on all other qualities/attributes – including being easygoing and likeable, caring about average people, dealing with issues of concern to women, looking out for the middle class, and being a good commander-in-chief.

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd shares details from the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, which suggests that President Barack Obama will start the general election campaign with only a 49-43 lead over Mitt Romney.

*** Testing Obama’s economic message: Our NBC/WSJ poll also tested the Obama and Romney economic messages (though without mentioning their names). The conclusion: Obama’s tests better than Romney’s for the most part. More than three-quarters of respondents (including nearly 70% of independents and Republicans) say they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who “will fight for balance and fairness and encourage the investments needed to grow our economy and strengthen the middle class,” which has become a standard line for Obama. In addition, seven in 10 say they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who “says America is better off when everyone gets a fair shot, does their fair share, and plays by the same rules” -- another Obama line. But what tested the worst was this line: “What drags down our entire economy is an ever-widening gap between the ultra-rich and everybody else.” That got just 45%. There’s clearly a line between touting “fairness” and attacking the rich.

*** Testing Romney’s: By comparison, 64% of all respondents (but 55% of indies and 46% of Dems) would be more likely to support a candidate who wants “to restore the values of economic freedom, opportunity, and small government,” which is pretty much Romney’s economic messaging. And 61% would be more likely to support a candidate who says “free enterprise has done more to lift people out of poverty, help build a strong middle class, and more our lives better than all of the government’s programs put together,” which is something that Romney tends to say. As our NBC/WSJ pollsters put it, Romney message still appears to be more geared to Republicans than a broader audience. By the way, most of Romney’s actions this week and many of the events he’s planning still smack of a campaign more worried about talking to Republicans than swing voters. Campaign messaging really has NOT pivoted yet.

*** The health-care albatross: While Obama’s economic messaging might be better than Romney’s, health care remains a problem for the president. In the poll, 36% call the health-care reform a good idea, while 45% call it a bad idea. That’s down from the 39%-39% split in January. What’s more 49% favor repealing and eliminating the law, while 42% oppose that. And get this: 59% say the ultimate Supreme Court decision on the law will be based “mostly on politics,” versus 32% who say it will be based “mostly on the law.” By the way, within the three ideological groups (liberals/moderates/conservatives) the group of folks who are MOST likely to believe the court will base their decision on the “law” vs. “politics are conservatives. Tells you liberals and moderates appear to believe the law will get overturned, which was the tone of the media coverage of the hearings.

*** Muncie and the story of America: Be sure not to miss National Journal’s latest cover story, which tells the tale about Muncie, IN. “Muncie is the story of America. In this place—dubbed ‘Middletown’ by early 20th-century sociologists—people have lost faith in their institutions. Government, politics, corporations, the media, organized religion, organized labor, banks, businesses, and other mainstays of a healthy society are failing. It’s not just that the institutions are corrupt or broken; those clichés oversimplify an existential problem: With few notable exceptions, the nation’s onetime social pillars are ill-equipped for the 21st century. Most critically, they are failing to adapt quickly enough for a population buffeted by wrenching economic, technological, and demographic change.” There are a lot of depressing aspects to this piece, but the one that struck us was how polarized and petty the LOCAL politics had become, imitating the national toxic tone. Sad.

*** Politicians behaving badly: Yesterday we saw this tweet: “Good pic of my son Jimmy's bulldog, Apollo - I'm sorry Mr. President, he's not on the menu!” -- in reference to Obama eating dog while a child when he lived abroad in Indonesia. Guess what: The tweet wasn’t from a random tweeter or even a GOP strategist. Instead, it was from Sen. John McCain, someone who once wrote after the 2011 Arizona shootings that, “Our political discourse should be more civil than it currently is, and we all, myself included, bear some responsibility for it not being so.” Meanwhile, we couldn’t count how many times Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer said the words “polygamy” in this Daily Beast interview about Romney. “Schweitzer replied that [Romney’s struggles with Latinos are] ‘kinda ironic given that his family came from a polygamy commune in Mexico, but then he’d have to talk about his family coming from a polygamy commune in Mexico, given the gender discrepancy.’ Women, he said, are ‘not great fans of polygamy, 86 percent were not great fans of polygamy. I am not alleging by any stretch that Romney is a polygamist and approves of [the] polygamy lifestyle, but his father was born into [a] polygamy commune in Mexico.’”  And these cheap hits were from McCain and Schweitzer, not cable TV or the Twitters

*** On the trail: Speaking of McCain, he and Mitt Romney address the RNC State Chair meeting in Scottsdale, AZ. (Pegged to this, the DNC has produced a new web video of McCain criticizing Romney during the ’08 campaign.) Afterward, Romney heads to Tempe, where he holds a Hispanic business roundtable discussion and then a rally.

*** Romney raises almost $12.6 million in March: Today’s the FEC deadline for the March fundraising reports, and the Romney camp says it raised $12.6 million in primary money last month -- his highest monthly total so far. The campaign also has $10 million in the bank as of March 31. The Obama campaign said earlier in the week that it has raised $53 million in March, but today we’ll find out what the campaign-DNC split is, as well as the campaign’s cash on hand.

*** Veepstakes watch: Time to cross Mitch Daniels off the list? We’ve already crossed Susana Martinez off our veepstakes list (due to her care for her developmentally disabled sister). And should we cross off Mitch Daniels? Here’s why: Not only did he wait until this week to endorse Romney, but he said this about the former Massachusetts governor in an interview with the Indianapolis Star: “‘You have to campaign to govern, not just to win,’ he said. ‘. . . Spend the precious time and dollars explaining what's at stake and a constructive program to make life better. And as I say, look at everything through the lens of folks who have yet to achieve." After a pause, Daniels added with disappointment: ‘Romney doesn't talk that way.’ ‘You don't change one thing about the policies you advocate or your principles,’ he said, noting instead that candidates should simply make clear how their policies would lift up those who are struggling. For instance, he said, at fundraisers Romney's message shouldn't be about how his policies affect the well-heeled people listening in the audience, but rather those who can't afford a ticket to get in.” Ouch.

*** Daniels praises Lugar: Also in that Indy Star interview, Daniels praised Sen. Dick Lugar (R), who’s in the fight of his political life in the May 8 GOP primary in Indiana. “‘I make the argument that I'm not for this guy because of what he's done; I'm for him because of what he can do,’ Daniels said. Pointing to major challenges facing the nation, he added: ‘To address problems that big we're going to need people who represent our point of view very effectively and can get the ear of other people. And I think (Lugar) is one such person -- one of not too many.’” The Lugar campaign is also passing around this story from the AP: “An Indiana Republican Party leader investigating how Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's campaign used a party database said Thursday he won't face any possible party sanctions before the May 8 primary. Jennifer Ping said Mourdock campaign manager Jim Holden likely violated a user agreement with the state party when he shared a logon to the database with an outside vendor. The party immediately caught the violation and locked the Mourdock campaign out of the database, said Ping, who chairs the party's technology and communication committee.”

*** On “Meet the Press”: NBC’s David Gregory interviews David Axelrod, as well as Darrell Issa and Peter King. And for Meet’s weekly “Press Pass” segment, Gregory spoke with comedian Jay Leno, who talked politics.

I know most think President Obama is good. Well how good is it going to be when his Healthcare Bill stands and the Health Insurance rates sky rocket which the Government can not control? Which means you still have to buy that Insurance or get fined by the Government for not having it. He didn't think about that now in his bill did he? He didn't think what it is going to cost the average family that can't not afford it now let alone what is going to happen when they have to have it. What about the homeless and jobless which get no aid from state or Government how can they even afford to pay the Government for not having the Health Insurance? His bill was not thought out at all. He has spent more money than all the other Presidents combined. But yet you might want to re-elect him. I sure hope your thinking about this now.

How many more times do we also have to listen to Michelle Obama stick her foot in her mouth. American's need to eat better comment. Well Michelle wake up not all American's make $100,000.00 a year or more most make less then $30,000.00 a year with bills to pay. So unless you have a plan to pass money on to them to buy that better food shut up. She says grow a garden like we do well not everyone has land or even a yard to do that. Duh. I'm the first lady and can say whatever without thinking. Stupidity on your part is going to cost the President his re-election.

I have seen changes in America but never up until President Obama was elected that the American people are now being forced to purchase something or get fined for not having it.

What's next we have to fund his next election or get fined?

And there are still people out there that don't believe the media swings way to the left? Could anyone with half a brain and the ability to put each shoe on the correct foot in the morning really believe that Obama's approval rating is 46-49%? Or that Obama has a 6 point lead over Romney even at this point? I refuse to believe that a sentient human being could actually believe any of that garbage. I think one of my biggest problems with this regime and the media is they constantly insult my intelligence.

I am frustrated and angry. We have a president that hates this country and wants to take your rights and freedoms away all the while asking you to pay for it out of "fairness". If that doesn't make you angry there's something wrong with you.

I think the problems are all yours.

Can you name the taken rights and freedoms that anger you so?

Fairness is exactly what this country needs. If dirty politicians and their rich friends who controlled them with their campaign donations, who profited off the housing crisis and recession because of rules and loopholes they created while millions lost everything they had to no fault of their own, who now want their taxes lower and call it class warfare when Obama says it's time for them to chip in and not allow the recovery to be placed solely on the backs of the very people they F'd doesn't make you angry there's something wrong with you.

Combine that with Romney having win over women, Hispanics, middle-class workers, union members, environmentalists, blacks, non-Mormon Christians, etc. shows us that a big-money, beat up Obama advertising campaign just isn't going to work...

Obama will win a second term...

Where do you get your information? Just for the record, if you make something up and then say it that doesn't actually mean its true. Or if someone else does the same thing and then tells you, doesn't really make it fact. Sorry.

you have some good points newbook but the only thing that will not make this election close is if the conservatives do not show up to vote. Moderate left voters were activists in 2008 now we see the other side taking on that role. Conservatives will hold their nose and support Romney in the long run because they hate this administration so much and alot of it I believe has to do with race. It is easier for a conservative to see a black man as incompetent. This may not make them racists just jumping to poor conclusions. If you take the color of skin out of the mix you see Obama having alot of his agenda passed which makes him more competent than alot of presdents before him.

Joe, there is a (small) group of racists that are blinded by their bigotry. But the president's incompetence has nothing to do with his race. You say Obama has had a lot of his agenda pass - His big claim to fame is his healthcare bill which is being contested in the Supreme Court. That's it. He didn't take care of gas prices, he didn't pass his clean air bill, he has spent more than Bush - and that's saying a lot!

He had a Democratic House and Congress for two years, yet he didn't raise taxes on the rich. Can you name something he's done that actually passed besides his contested HC?

Their baseless, lame, and vapid arguments are only reinforcing my (and I'm sure many others) decision to reelect the president.

Otherwise, he is extremely competent at moving it towards a more socialist bent, a move most oppose. I cannot think of an opponent so flawed as to not get my vote over him. Obama has had his shot an has failed. And if he had the class a chief executive is supposed to have, when he gets presented with polls showing blacks will vote for him 90%, he'd stand up in the black community and say, "This is wrong; this is racist; you should vote with your minds!" But this is not going to happen.

And when the richest in America vote for wooden Mitt overwhelmingly, Willard will stand up and say "This in not fair, you should vote with some empathy for everybody else", right? Yeah, right, the attitude among the rich is "screw everybody else, I got mine" and we all know it.

Romney's advantage on "the economy" will disappear quickly during the debates when people realize he has no new ideas and that he has thus far gotten a pass on the Bain issues and failure in MA as a one-term governor. All the talking points he has been spouting off will mean nothing when he has to go toe to toe with Obama. If anybody in the upper mid-west (auto industry) votes for this clown over Obama based on economic issues, they should have their head examined.

As far as health care, Romeny has no advantage. It is silly to think that he does. His answer is to go backwards while Massachusetts health care costs are shown to be going down (only state in the nation) while over 60% of the state (and rising) are happy with the new system.

With Obama leading in every other area already, I'd say wooden Mitt has a lot of work to do. In fact, he may be facing a major blowout in November.

And shame on John McCain, what a cheap shot. Same with the guy from Montana, but he's a nobody. McCain should no better.

The media carries ultra conservative right and left wing programs over their airwaves, thus encouraging divisiveness. 2. The main stream media outlets put across their political agendas under the guise of reporting news. 3. Politicians from both sides preach hatred for the opposing party. 4. We, the public, are then left with the responsibility to decipher the truth from the lie. 5. By being told the truth we can make informed decisions that will help advance this country out of the third world status we are fast approaching.

People unite when things get tough and their leaders no longer are concerned about their constituents and more concerned with themselves. Words like brave, honest, selfless and numerous other words that describe greatness have been lost in today's world. The world today is about honoring bufoons; no talent reality television "stars" winning millions of dollars for lying, cheating and hating other people, drunks and drug addicts on the Cops show, the Kardashians who are the Anti-Christs of the American family. If we want to unite then the first thing to do is not give these people any airtime, no way to push their pathetic and meaningless lives on the rest of us.

The final way to unite people is to help them become self sufficient through education and the creation of jobs that pay fairly in return for hard work. No entitlements just work.

                                                                      Reply#220 - Fri Apr 20, 2012 2:50 PM EDT

Supported the eco crazies of the epa and their great global warming and green energy con job by stopping drilling in the gulf and off shore, cancelled all drilling permits, prevented the canadian pipeline that would have helped reduce the prices of gas and created jobs, and Undid everything bush did to bring the gas prices down to a buck 80 which has now launched prices up to four+fyi to new drives back in the 80's I paid $10 a tank big difference from $50 ha. When your paying 5 bucks a gallon it's because of obama, nancy pelosi, harry reid, etc and the eco terrorist of the epa you can thank! We have no jobs because of the over taxation and regulations of socialist administrations like obama's and if he passes his increase to capital gains bill more jobs will go. I saw some socialist zealot on the communist network msnbc explaining how good things were while the so called rich were being taxed 70% of there income as if this was right first off he was wrong it was the total opposite , second I don't know about you but if someone demands 70% of my income they'll get 100% off my foot up there ass. Everything obama says is a lie this issue with contraceptives and the church isn't a war agains women it's a war against the first amendment and a sample of just how corrupt obamacare truly is considering it was written by communist radicals the same type of crazies blowing up buildings in the 70"s. His attack on romney is also false making us believe that he only pays 15% on income tax NO! when romney made the money he paid the full 35% which to me is higher than it should be but he took that income what he was left with anyways and invested it, the tax rate on the interest from those investments is 15% if you raise this they'll be less investments in the united states and we'll be in trouble. The biggest threat to this country is big government, stossels book no they can't is accurate they can't but we can, it wasn't government that came to my friends aid all he got from them was excuses when he lost his job, it was private organizations that provided him oil for heat. Over the last 50 years our government has run mostly socialist and it's that infection that's killing this country and it's time to end the occupation it's time to stop falling for their lies and false promises that cater to your own greed and self centeredness it's time to grow up.

If Obama has spent billions on cronie capitalism, then Bush and Cheney spent trillions. Also, calling Republicans job creators in this day and age is the biggest joke, and hoax, being played on the American public since the "War of the Worlds" broadcast back in the 1950s. The House of Reps was taken by the Republicans in the 2010 mid-terms on the platform of job creation. Well, where are the jobs? And you can't say Obama is blocking infrastructure or job creation legislation proposed by the Republicans other than perhaps the XL Pipeline. (The problem with the XL Pipeline is that there are environmental issues involved, and the jobs would only be temporary, at best.) BTW ... in reading the rest of your rant, it is a waste of time addressing your issues because you are clearly out of your mind.

                                                                                          1. Yes...the Supreme Court knocks down Obamacare but it goes 5-4...like always.

                                                                                          2. Obama will win the election...it will be close but Romney will not sell American due to his lack of appeal. Plus the economy will continue to improve and Obama will be able to ride that wave.

                                                                                          3. The Cubs definitely won't win the World Series.

If you read any articles about the health care refomr bill, if it does not go Obama's way it will be a 5 to 4 decision and ONLY on the mandated portion of the bill. However it would be unprecedented... Supreme Courts like to stay out of the legislative branch's way. Obama already has alot more than 12 states in his back pocket Romney MIGHT have that many. However I will book on the Cubbies prediction though!

He was generous to ranking executives, rewarding CEOs with huge bonuses. Yet he tended to treat those below his pay grade as little more than machinery.
Romney has repeatedly claimed to have created 100,000 jobs at Bain, and says that providing work for Americans was a primary company goal. He makes his case by citing

Domino's , Sports Authority and Staples, companies that added jobs after Bain bought in. But Bain bought Domino's just months before Romney left to run the Salt Lake City Olympics, meaning someone else created those jobs. And he didn't manage Staples or Sports Authority; Bain was a minority investor in both. An example of Romney's cold-blooded approach is his 1994 purchase of Dade International, an Illinois medical-equipment company. He soon merged it with two similar firms, a move that tripled sales. Once again, he couldn't help but raid the vault, peeling away $100 million for himself and investors at the same time Dade was laying off 1,700 American workers. After Bain closed a Dade plant in Puerto Rico, human resources manager Cindy Hewitt was asked to lure a dozen of those employees to work in the company's Miami factory. But that plant soon closed as well. Though Romney was gobbling up millions, Bain still wanted those laid-off employees to repay their moving costs. "They were treated horribly," Hewitt told the New York Times. "There was absolutely no concern for the employees. It was truly and completely profit-focused." Yet Bain's molestation wasn't complete. It was trying to sell Dade, but didn't like the offers it received on the open market. So it created an artificial market of its own. In 1999 it forced Dade to borrow $242 million, which was used to buy back company stock from Bain, Dade executives and their banker, Goldman Sachs. Bain was again extracting profits with borrowed money. It had pushed Dade's debt to a bracing $2 billion. To help pay for the deal, the company laid off another 367 workers. But that debt proved too much for Dade's shoulders to carry. Three years later, the company was bankrupt. Romney operating procedure. To pump short-term earnings, he would essentially "starve a company," whacking not just employees, but customer service and research-and-development funding — the very ingredients of long-term prosperity. They were very aggressive about borrowing the most money they could. He's very driven to be the best he could be, and that was to be as cutthroat as he could be. But in the process, he hurt a lot of companies and cost a lot of jobs, maybe tens of thousands of jobs." After all, Romney frequently assumed the role of welfare queen himself. In 1988, he bought South Carolina photo-album maker Holson Burnes. In exchange for the firm's promise to build a new factory, the people of Gaffney, South Carolina, gave Bain $5 million in bonds and $200,000 in utility upgrades. The plant closed just four years later. The 100 jobs there were later shipped to Mexico. At GSI, he dumped $44 million in pension shortfalls on the federal government. And when he bought mattress-maker Sealy in 1997, he took $600,000 in welfare to move the firm from Ohio to North Carolina.

Your ability to take away everything someone worked for, as you force a growing number of citizens to watch inferring you would do the same to them, is absolutely amazing you @!$%#in creep...
