Republican presidential candidate, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich speaks at the 2012 New York Republican State Dinner on April 19, 2012 in New York City. The Taxpayers Protection Alliance has urged Gingrich to give up his Secret Service protection, which he has had for about a month, in order to save taxpayer dollars.
NEW YORK -- Speaking before several thousand Republicans Thursday evening, Newt Gingrich said he is committed to having a “unified” party going forward and seemed to change his rhetoric towards the GOP presidential frontrunner.
Gingrich, giving remarks at the New York State Committee Annual Dinner, vowed that whether he or Mitt Romney become the nominee, they will work together to defeat President Obama in the fall.
“If I were to become the nominee, he [Romney] would work all out because it is our grandchildren’s future at stake. If he becomes the nominee, Callista and I will work out because it is our grandchildren’s future at stake,” the former House speaker promised, acknowledging he is clearly the underdog. “The fact is, we are dedicated to a unified Republican Party, winning the presidency on behalf of America’s future.”
Late last month, campaigning in Green Bay, Wis., Gingrich said while he is going to Tampa and is committed to party unity it was only with a caveat.
“We are deeply committed to going to Tampa, we are deeply committed to fighting for these ideas, that we are prepared to compete all the way, that while I am committed to party unity I think it ought to be party unity for a purpose, with a platform that matters and with ideas that enable us to say to the American people if you hire us, we’re not just anti-Obama, we are pro success for America and here are ideas that will make America successful,” he said at Kroll’s West Restaurant on March 30.
Thursday night’s speech at a New York City hotel seemed to take a different tone – a much more conciliatory tone from Gingrich. He reiterated he has stayed in the GOP race to articulate big themes and big issues across the country.
The keynote speaker at tonight’s annual dinner was potential vice presidential candidate, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.
After taking the stage following a bagpiper, Gingrich praised Gov. Jindal as “one of the brightest people in all of American politics.”
Gingrich heads to upstate New York Friday for one public event in Buffalo.

Good for Newt -- Democracy, like capitalism requires competition. Good for the companies that have disassociated with A.L.E.C. Good for the NRA for removing Ted Nugent’s call-to-violence rant from their website. Good for Jan Brewer today for her veto of guns in public buildings (like court houses).
Good for Jan Schakowsky for legislation to support all working moms with government assistance to mothers to stay home with children up to the age of four. (Now wait for the real outrage from the far-Right, ha.) And right up there with that, good for Constance Johnson's amendment banning Non-Procreative Ejaculation. It makes all the right-wing wackos admit that people should have a right over their own bodies.
Good for the American people who manage to find time in the rat race to become activists against an oligarchy with rule by corporations and the rich.
He definitely does not need SS protection. Since he has not a chance in hell of getting nominated, nobody would try to kill him, except possibly the late night comedy writers that are his only remaining competition.
He might need Secret Service to protect him from republicans. Democrats love him at this point.

All I read is people sticking up for Obama blaming Bush. Bush hasn't been around for over 3 years. Why hasn't anything improved? Why has it gotten worse? Bush hasn't been here to make it worse. Obama could have let the patriot act go away. Could have brought all the troops home. He could have done so much, instead he decided to spend us into eternal debt. I'm not impressed, and Bush didn't do it.

I thought the story was about Newt, Mr. Phantom. Truman was a crappy president. He got us into Korea and we have never left. How many billions have we wasted there? Oh yeah it wasn't a war it was a police action. I'm tried of having a president who apologizes for America. We've given billions to other countries in foreign aid and they still hate us. If we are so broke why haven't we cut them off? The only way we can get out of the debt mess we are in is with sweeping cuts. So the bottom line difference between Obama and Romney is Obama is trying to spend us out of debt and Romney will cut spending to eliminate the debt. Our government raided the Social Security fund when LBJ was president and they haven't paid it back yet.

Yea, SS is part of today's society that if us conservatives were around at the end of the Great Depression, we probably would have not voted for it, but it's part of our culture today. The PHBst has bought into the mainstream media's bias'd reporting and twisting of Republican ideas. As for the flood control dams, hospitals and whatever PHBst thinks the government builds, these are drempt up issues to cast dispursions on the real problem. We are in uncharted territory regarding food stamps and poverty. Since July 2011, our foodstamp population has grown from 11% to 14% (ref NY Times article last fall). How is this President Bush's fault?

The relevant news about the fast and furious testimony was so upsetting to Darrell Issa and Republicans that they don't even talk about it. What we learned from all the testimony, is that the U.S. needs to have much stricter gun control laws in order to prevent the weapons being bought here and smuggled to Mexico.
Oops! Not exactly what the GOP was hoping for. But the fact remains; as long as anyone can get a gun (you know people on the terrorist watch list are getting guns legally, right?), people will come to the U.S. to get them.

How can you not enjoy his campaign? He is sponsored by the Israeli lobby in the form of the casino mogul. His primary wins are in districts where tooth counts are in inverse proportion to his vote count. He elects himself mayor of the moon. He shows us how easy it is to make $30k/hr giving history lessons. He confidently predicts how he will wipe the debate floor with President Obama as the GOP nominee and he manages to get himself nipped by a penguin. All the while peddling his and Calipso's books.

I don't understand. After 8 wonderful, prosperous years with a Republican President in the White House, how did a Democrat ever manage to win the 2008 election? The U.S. is supposedly home to far more Republicans than Democrats, so how did it happen that so many Republicans crossed over to vote for Barack Obama in 2008? The way I see it, if the GOP doesn't like who's sitting in the Oval Office right now they have only themselves to blame. I'm a Democrat and I have voted for many a Republican candidate in the past, and I hope to do so again as long as I think they are qualified to do the job. I don't march in lockstep to ANY Party's drumbeat.

It is becoming more clear on a daily basis that Newt Gingrich does not have even one clue, and that the Dems are playing that for all its worth in any attempt they can to cast doubt on the Republican's ability to field a viable candidate. Of course, many people still believe Obama is a 'good president', but so far that only counts until his 'behind the scenes' episodes with the Secret Service and their prostitutes finally come to light. Michelle is already counting up what the divorce settlement will get her, should it need to be filed.
