NBC/WSJ poll: Romney's image improves but remains a net-negative

Since emerging as the Republican Party's presumptive nominee, Mitt Romney has seen his favorability score increase to its highest mark, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

But that score still remains a net-negative, and it trails President Obama's.

In the poll, 33% view Romney positively -- which is higher than it has ever been in the survey -- versus 36% who view him negatively. That's an improvement from March, when his score was 28% positive-39% negative.

Much of this can be attributed to Republicans who have begun to coalesce around Romney. In March, his score with them was 50%-16%; now it's 62%-12%.

By comparison, Obama's positive/negative score is 48%-39%, and those numbers have been fairly consistent over the past two years.

Looking inside these numbers, two other things stand out:
-- The gender gap is helping Obama: His positive/negative score is even among men (44%-42%), but he has a big advantage with women (51%-37%).
-- There isn't much of a gender gap for Romney (both men and women view him pretty evenly), but his big gap is with Latinos (23%-42% vs. Obama's 57%-26%).

A final point: Both Romney and Obama aren't as popular as their wives. Ann Romney's positive/negative score in the poll is 27%-17%, and First Lady Michelle Obama's is 54%-20%.

The full NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted April 13-17 of 1,000 respondents (250 of which were reached by cell phone), and which it has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points -- will be released at 6:30 pm ET.

DAMN,

I hope OBAMACARE is upheld by The Supreme Court.

I can't wait for two thousand (2,000) more IRS agents to be hired to make sure you comply with the law and make sure you are eligible for medical care before you are allowed to get it.

I can't wait for some "mean, rotten, disgusting" republican to check your medical records in some government-run medical data base.....For whatever reason!!

I can't wait...........

Ah, it's Uncle Bernie with his daily dose of insanity & bile spewing rants. How lovely.

Yea Bernie, I hope so too though I'm not betting our joke of a Supreme Court. It would be nice to see another 40 Million Americans receive decent health care though I know you think that's awful. Much better that our hospital emergency rooms be used for regular health care and then stick the taxpayers with the bill.

You will recall Bernie, that the "Individual Mandate" was a Republican/Conservative concoction, dreamed up by none other than the Heritage Foundation (a well known bastion of Bolshevism) and the likes of one Newt Gingrich along with a number of other Conservative Congress people.

So I guess you could say that "The GOP was for the mandate before then knew Obama was for the mandate, so then they were against the mandate". Funny people you Reich Wing crazies, never could figure jokers out.

Last night I got a preview of the movie "The Three Stooges" on PBS.

It was Travis Smiley, Prof West and Phil Donahue discussing the plight of the poor. I never laughed so hard watching Moe, Larry and Curly. Three REALLY rich guys telling us what a rotten country we are and how terrible we treat the poor.

However, it was a pity watching Phil Donahue trying as hard as he can to patronize West and Smiley. You should have seen it!

Yea, I'll bet it was a total riot, a real laugh fest.

Almost as funny as listeing to Mittens talk about his compassion for the working man. Now that is LOL funny, fella, I can promise you that.

Seriously, intellectual capacity is nothing compared to one's capacity for experiences. My computer has intellectual capacity, more than I, but I built it and I write code.

I am sick of pretending Romney already won, "presumptive" "potential" etc. He is only half way there. On top of that, the delegate counts are way off, giving Romney way more than he has, and Gingrich and Paul was less.

Romney loses or ties Obama in nearly all polls out there. Other polls that actually consider other GOP candidates, show Gingrich always losing badly to Obama, and some show Ron Paul losing badly, while others actually show him winning (and considering that he would get the "anybody but Obama" crowd, plus the inds, the libertarians, and he cuts into the dem base, I know he could beat Obama.

I am glad Romney is winning though, because he doesnt stand a chance (Paul bots all say they will write Paul in if he doesn't get nominated).

    We are sure to win!!!

I just learned in my medical ethics class that the US is planning on spending something like $8 billion on growth hormones, in order to inject children that are statistically undersized (relative to the "norm"), rather than spending it on something useful. Did I mention that it is government research that pushes all of this (and insiders making deals with the hormone producers to help job growth)...

OH please, tell me which 'Romney image' you're talking about? Mr. Romney changes his image when he changes his $200 undershorts... I'll bet if you ask the Mittster to define his image his answer would be "I'll get back to you"!!!!!!

If you want someone with a good, solid and stable image, look no further than President Obama... Obama is an honest man, a man we can trust to make our Country whole... he's working for the United States of American and We the People!!!

the election will be close on the popular vote total. Willard has several problems- woman and latinos which make his election difficult. If the economy continues to rebound and unemployment gets to 8% or lower its Obama in a electorial landslide. If the economy doesnt recover its a toss up. I just dont see Romney resonating with the public, so at best its hold your nose and pull the lever. Not an enviable position to be in.

I hope that Mitt is not ignored on the day his Republican vote for their candidate to be chosen at the convention in Tampa to run against President Obama. He is so confident that he has won but the Republican base has not even chose him. Their still two opponent still in the race and he could be surprise with the outcome. We shall see if he still smiling then and laughing because the polls can report all this false belief but we the people knows different.

While a great deal can happen between now and November, the fact is that people don't like Mitt very much. One has to be able to identify with someone in order to like that person and voters have a hard time identifying with Mitt, probably because he has a hard time identifying with them. As was proved with GW Bush, voters tend to vote for the fellow with whom they'd rather have a beer, and they'd rather have a beer with Obama.

                          Thanks for you input.

I know several of my friends who are going to vote "Party Over Person", meaning they don't care if Bozo the Clown is the Republican nominee. They will vote for whomever the Republican nominee is. They are all very religious. Two of them are dirt poor, with lots of kids they can't afford to raise, but the kids are "God's Gift". Their credit cards are maxed, and I've loaned a couple of them some money...which I don't ever expect to see again.

It seems so strange to me that these people who are so poor would systematically vote for the party who would only make them poorer....sad, that.

Checkered--I've never figured out why people will vote against their clear self-interest. It may have to do with their sense of self worth. If this rich white man pays attention to them (or pretends to), then maybe they're worth more than they think they are. Historically, that was true in the late-nineteenth century south where the rich Bourbons won over the Populists. The original Populists appealed to poor whites and blacks on economic grounds, while the Bourbons told poor whites that no matter how poor they were, they were still white and therefore had greater status than blacks. So the Bourbons continued to exploit the poor.

Brilliant poetry. I love the truth within those words! I have 3 young children, and have been extremely concerned about the direction and future of our country, especially for my children's sake. Over the course of the last three years, it has been frustrating to see President Obama make so many decisions and implement policies that are detrimental to our country. Today, our country seems more divided than ever in recent times, in terms of race, socio-economics, gender, etc. You can watch TV, read the news, or review simplistic explanations that try to explain the President's actions, decisions and policies. But after careful analysis, I believe his re-election would have grave and detrimental effects on our country, and the country that we leave our children and their children.

And policies so detrimental to the country--such as universal (or nearly) health care, common sense regulations to prevent the corrupt banking practices that resulted in the meltdown of 2008, saving the auto industry, eliminating Osama bin Laden and twenty-plus of his top lieutenants, getting out of Iraq, devising a realistic strategy for getting out of Afghanistan, laws in support of equal pay for equal work. Yep, all terrible policies and decisions.

I think it is so ironic that we have a Pres. by the name of Obama (biggest Liar) to ever hold office too. That says He was born with no silver spoon in his mouth. But really how many Americans believe such a big liar as that. Of course He wasn't , but He did not account for the moffia and the Arabs who have paid him to run this country in the ground, which He has just about accomplished. I am so happy that we have a man like Romney who is honest, a christian, a man who holds to family values, a man who is by far the man who can turn this country around like Ronald Reagan, who in my book was one of the best Pres. in the last 50 years. WE have had some sad Democrats, Jimmy Carter, Lyndon Johnson, Bill Clinton, just to name a few. Since the untimly killing of John Kennedy, who we have not closed the book on. Their are many hidden things in his Pres. that has not been annsered. like the killing of Maralyn Monroe, which was done by someone slipping something in her drink. Kennedy was with her the nite before she dies. So I may be wrong, if I am I will admit it, but we have had some underhanded Democrats, Obama heads the list. WE need to send him packing before He does to America what He was hired to do,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Ruin us. Thanks for reading.

Glad to see that the Republicans have nominated someone who the people don't like. This should bode well for President Obama being re-elected.

America needs pragmatic politicians who can deliberate and compromise to achieve optimal policies. Extreme political ideologues, as the Tea Party demonstrated, produce dysfunctional government. If they reach a majority, extreme political ideologues will force their ideology on all others, no matter how contrary their ideology is to experience, and no matter how badly and how many people get hurt. Extreme capitalist ideology may be as destructive to the welfare of the nation as is extreme communist ideology.

The only way that Mitt Romney has a chance at the Presidency is if he got Barack Obama to run as his V.P.
