Since emerging as the Republican Party's presumptive nominee, Mitt Romney has seen his favorability score increase to its highest mark, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
But that score still remains a net-negative, and it trails President Obama's.
In the poll, 33% view Romney positively -- which is higher than it has ever been in the survey -- versus 36% who view him negatively. That's an improvement from March, when his score was 28% positive-39% negative.
Much of this can be attributed to Republicans who have begun to coalesce around Romney. In March, his score with them was 50%-16%; now it's 62%-12%.
By comparison, Obama's positive/negative score is 48%-39%, and those numbers have been fairly consistent over the past two years.
Looking inside these numbers, two other things stand out:
-- The gender gap is helping Obama: His positive/negative score is even among men (44%-42%), but he has a big advantage with women (51%-37%).
-- There isn't much of a gender gap for Romney (both men and women view him pretty evenly), but his big gap is with Latinos (23%-42% vs. Obama's 57%-26%).
A final point: Both Romney and Obama aren't as popular as their wives. Ann Romney's positive/negative score in the poll is 27%-17%, and First Lady Michelle Obama's is 54%-20%.
The full NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted April 13-17 of 1,000 respondents (250 of which were reached by cell phone), and which it has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points -- will be released at 6:30 pm ET.


Mitt Romney lacks charisma.
It matters little. As long as he can pass a minimum test of competency , the voters will follow their inclination to throw out a demonstrably failed President, charismatic or not.
I believe Romney is very charismatic in person, but on the campaign trail and in the MSM he acts rather reserved from all the criticism he faces.
You can see it with Obama, too. When he has the crowd he is very charismatic and dynamic. However, when someone pushes back, Obama does "the face".

"They were treated horribly," Hewitt told The New York Times. "There was absolutely no concern for the employees. It was truly and completely profit-focused."
Yet Bain's molestation wasn't complete. It was trying to sell Dade but didn't like the offers it received on the open market. So it created an artificial market of its own.
In 1999, it forced Dade to borrow $242 million, which was used to buy back company stock from Bain, Dade executives, and their banker, Goldman Sachs.
Bain was again extracting profits with borrowed money. It had pushed Dade's debt to a bracing $2 billion. To help pay for the deal, the company laid off another 367 workers.
But that debt proved too much for Dade's shoulders to carry. Three years later, the company was bankrupt.
Kosman calls it standard Romney operating procedure. To pump short-term earnings, he would essentially "starve a company," whacking not just employees, but also customer-service and research-and-development funding—the ingredients of long-term prosperity.
"I think they're one of the worst, at least during Romney's time," Kosman says. "They were very aggressive about dividends. They were very aggressive about borrowing the most money they could. He's very driven to be the best he could be, and that was to be as cutthroat as he could be. But in the process, he hurt a lot of companies and cost a lot of jobs, maybe tens of thousands of jobs."
Kosman says it's telling that Romney never cites companies he actually managed as evidence of his job-building skills.
"If Romney had some stories to tell, he'd use those stories," he says. "I think it's very interesting that he's not telling those stories because I think they don't exist."
The Welfare Queen
Romney's economic views were on stark parade during this year's Michigan primary. He ripped President Obama for bailing out the auto industry and argued that it should have been dealt with in his favorite resting place: bankruptcy court.
He was particularly incensed that the president rescued workers' pension funds before covering Wall Street's bad loans.
But his faith in the free market wobbles when his friends need rescuing. Romney just as vigorously defends the $10 billion government bailout of Goldman Sachs, his investment partner at Bain.
After all, Romney frequently assumed the role of welfare queen himself.
In 1988, he bought South Carolina photo-album maker Holson Burnes. In exchange for the firm's promise to build a new factory, the people of Gaffney, South Carolina, gave Bain $5 million in bonds and $200,000 in utility upgrades.
The plant closed just four years later. The 100 jobs there were later shipped to Mexico.
At GSI, he dumped $44 million in pension shortfalls on the federal government. And when he bought mattress maker Sealy in 1997, he took $600,000 in welfare to move the firm from Ohio to North Carolina.

Hey just pointing out the criticism by this network, MSNBC, of Hillary Clinton and the insults thrown by David Schuster at Chelsea.

That's only because you don't understand the debate.
Tell me, did candidate Obama specifically say that he was against "forcing people to buy insurance"? Does the ACA have a provision mandating that every citizen buy insurance?
So why should I believe anything he says?
Well, I don't think the GOP are gambling on the debates. The debates really just favor the most 'witty' candidate over the other. It's not really a hallmark of leadership or competency, it's just who's the wittiest.
Standup comedians are very witty and would do fabulous in a debate. Just saying, don't put too much faith here.
On the other hand, debates are a very simple way to contrast two candidates.
So my money is on...Romney won't debate this election cycle. He'll avoid them. He doesn't think great on his feet and tends to gaffe when he's asked unexpected questions or the conversations takes a turn down a rabbit hole.
He'll cite whatever excuse he can, and try to keep his monologue attacks going on.
It will cost him some points, since he'll be perceived as 'cowardly', but he'll try to make them up on attacking the economy.
What is demonstrable is that Romney is an unabashed liar and opportunist. President Obama is historic not only because he is the first minority president but also because he saved this country from going over a Republican fabricated economic cliff and he brought the end of at least one Republican war. Of course the Republicans strategy has always been (before he was even elected) to attack, attack, and attack some more no matter what he did. Their strategy has been to obstruct him and oppose anything he is for in order to make him a single-term president. By no sane analysis could Obama be considered a failure, just the basic fact that he prevented a deep economic depression, killed Osama Bin Laden and ended the Iraq War would prove that is the case.
No, this is not about a failed President Obama, this is about the Republicans wanting to put a stranglehold on the economic, political and moral throat of the country. This is about not accepting diversity and heterogeneity in the United States. This is about protecting the corporate-billionaire monopoly on power. This is about disenfranchising the middle class, women and minorities. This is about circumventing rationality, reason, science and compassion.
Of course Romney's numbers are increasing, not at all because his image has actually improved, but rather because Republicans are expert at falling into line, circling the wagons and supporting the right-wing figurehead of the party. Just as they have done for decades. You can rest assured Republicans don't like Etcha-a-sketch anymore than they did last week - they just no longer have any choice in the matter. Of course they've made their bed and now they have to sleep in it and you can be sure they will get the crabs sleeping with flip-flop Romney.

The Obama ad that is causing Alan such grief is being run by a PAC that is independent of President Obama. The President is prohibited BY LAW from interfering with the operation of the PAC.
Alan, interesting that you raise the mandatory insurance issue. Recall, that early in his term Obama actually thought that he could sit down with the Republican leaders and negotiate policies that all could agree on. At that negotiating table the Republicans insisted that all Americans be required to purchase health insurance to make the pool as large as possible to spread the risk - just like their health care bill they introduced in 1979. Obama agreed, although his preference was for a single payer system.
Then the Republicans, who got what they wanted in the health care bill, turned on Obama and the bill like rabid dogs. Obama learned his lesson, but was willing to try again to reach an agreement on a deficit reduction bill that would have raised some taxes and would make $4 trillion in spending cuts over 10 years. Boenher agreed but couldn't get his newly elected tea party members to go along. That apparently was the last straw for Obama's hope of seeing real bipartisanship coming from the Republicans.
So is cutting taxes and the size and reach of the Federal Government. You for that? How about individual accounts instead of SS? Now that the Administration claims they can mandate citizens to buy a product from a third-party (private) company, you should have no problem when President Romney mandates you to buy a 401(k) from Fidelity. Precedents suck don't they.

Blanche Lincoln was defeated in the primary and her opponent lost the general all over her health care vote (she went too far even with the individual mandate). Ben Nelson, retires instead of facing the voters. Scott Brown gets elected in Massachusetts. A Republican gets elected to Kennedy's old seat by specifically running against the ACA.
If you think only Republicans didn't agree with him you're living in a fantasy land. The right of his own party could not get their electorate to agree to this, and neither did the voters of a Democratic bastion.

You're kidding right? They both faced fierce partisanship, Clinton to the point of impeachment. But they both knew how to negotiate, and they both knew when (and when not to) compromise. They also both knew how to be inclusive when dealing with the opposite side of the aisle, rather than simply locking them out of "closed door" sessions. It's as much art as it is science. Clinton and Reagan were both results-oriented, and both knew how to drive to resolution. These are skills you learn via the school of hard knocks, not in academia. It comes from managerial and executive experience, and Obama was elected with neither in his background. His comfort-zone is campaigning, giving speeches. Good leaders should know how to make a good speech. But a gift for giving good speeches does not necessarily equate with strong managerial skills. Obama was totally underqualified going in, and he's taking too long to learn the job.
Unfortunately, cutting taxes increases the deficit and can actually harm the economy because of the increased deficits, not to mention their effect on income inequality. As for the federal government size, nowadays we NEED a big federal government. The days of limited government are over, and thank God. I personally prefer a single-payer system, but the individual mandate is nonetheless a good decision. As for the ACA, the government cannot force you to buy a product from a specific company. So Romney cannot force me to buy a 401(k) from Fidelity. And a 401(k) isn't always necessary; health insurance is.

Neither party had to face a Congress that was so deadset against them that compromising didn't work. Reagan cut taxes once and raised taxes 19 times. Clinton cut spending in order to placate the Republicans. And yet when Obama offers to cut spending significantly in return for some tax increases and used a Republican idea for his healthcare plan (a sort of compromise in order to win bipartisanship), the GOP refused. Reagan and Clinton both had opposing parties that were willing to negotiate. Obama didn't; ask the Tea Party protesters comparing Obama to Hitler and the Senate Minority Leader who stated that his number one goal to unseat the President. Remember those days???

Freshieee, perhaps you've forgotten just how toxic were the politics during Reagan's and Clinton's terms. Such a dynamic is nothing new. How Obama handled it early on made the critical difference this time around. First, he delegated too much to Pelosi & Reid, then the 3 of them made it clear from day one they had no intention of paying any mind to Republican considerations. A complete lockout - remember those days? Not a constructive first impression for a candidate who claimed he'd be a uniter, not a divider. Good way to make enemies, though.
Even George W was able to get budgets approved, while every Democrat (and a few Republicans) were comparing him to Hitler. But again, he'd cut his teeth as a governor, and had some experience dealing with both sides of the aisle - as simple as picking up the phone and chatting with the opposition leader, frequently, developing working relationships even when the politics don't align. According to White House insiders, Obama rarely, if ever, does that, even with those in his own party. No wonder no Senator, Republican or Democrat, voted to approve his budget...
Of course willard's negatives are up, he believes his religious leaders when they tell him if he remains obedient and keeps paying his tithing he gets to become a polygamist god in the next life. This stuff has gone to his head.
Frankly (to quote Veritas177 fr/another comments forum) I think that the failure to pass, or even seriously offer, a budget for the last two years clearly ranks Obama as the worst president of the modern era. For all the liberal complaints about him, Bush was able to pass budgets even when the opposition party controlled both chambers. Even Bush's most controversial legislation, such as the Medicare Modernization Act and the Iraq war authorization received some level of bipartisan support, whereas Obama was unable to even persuade Olympia Snowe to sign onto his "signature" healthcare reform.
When Bush became president the Clinton bubble had burst and the economy was already on its way to recession, a recession that was magnified by the terrible impact of 9/11. Later the economy under Bush was hit by hurricane Katrina and the financial meltdown. And yet there were more Americans employed at the end of Bush's administration than at the beginning, and unemployment averaged just 5.4% across his administration. Certainly Bush added terribly to the national debt, yet he managed to add less debt in eight years than Obama has in just three. Obama has offered little in terms of answers except to blame Republicans, despite the fact that his party controlled both chambers for two full years of his term.
The 2009 ARRA, passed without a single Republican vote, appropriated four times as much money in inflation adjusted dollars than the Work Project Administration, and yet has yielded annual growth a full point below the historical average. Despite being granted more resources than any administration in history, unemployment remains at 8.2% - a number that is significantly understated because so many people have left the workforce.
Obama's failure to offer any solutions to the growing Social Security and Medicare funding crisis (in fact, he has added to the problem by redirecting a half trillion dollars from Medicare to Medicaid) puts at risk the future of every American dependent on those programs, as well as the future generations who will have to try to pay the enormous debt that he has added.
This administration has undoubtedly been the most inept in recent memory, and has to be counted among the worst in history.

of Congress to Lou Dobbs, have started echoing the "birthers'" claims
that Barack Obama's eligibility for office needs to be examined. Media
Matters Action Network decided to take up the challenge. Needless to say, we found
their evidence rather uncompelling.
MYTH: The
Certification Of Live Birth Is Not Enough Evidence To Confirm His Birth In
Hawaii
Birther Movement Claim:
Obama has NOT provided a certified copy of an original, typed,
vault copy, long-form, birth certificate, signed by his mother and delivering
doctor with the name of the hospital thereon, to be used to conclusively prove
one of the two key elements used in determining his "natural born"
citizenship status per the U.S. Constitution, i.e., where he was born. All he
has provided to the electorate and public to see is a digital image on the
internet of a purported copy of a short, summary, computer printed form called
a Certification of Live Birth, aka COLB, which is not a Birth Certificate. No
one in any controlling legal authority and official expert capacity has ever
been allowed to examine the purported computer made paper document displayed in
the digital images and digital pictures on the internet.

Obama's official birth certificate," Fukino said in the statement.

certified birth certificate to persons who do not have a tangible interest in
the vital record. ... No state official, including Gov. Linda Lingle, has ever
instructed that this vital record be handled in a manner different from any

saying it's a forgery. There's a law on the books in Hawaii that allows
foreign-born children to obtain a Hawaiian COLB. And the information on a
late-registered COLB doesn't need to be verified by anyone; it's based solely

FACT: The Law In Question Did Not Exist Until 20 Years Later
The law allowing foreign-born children to obtain Hawaiian COLBs
didn't exist until 20 years after Obama was born, while Obama's published COLB

MYTH: Obama Renounced
His Citizenship While In Indonesia
Birther Movement Claim:
The problem Obama has with that issue is whether his
step-father, who moved the family to Indonesia after marrying his mother,
legally "adopted" him or "acknowledged" him as his son in
Indonesia with the mother's concurrence, thereby renouncing his U.S.

FACT: Barack Obama Never Renounced His Citizenship
The primary piece of evidence birthers cite to support this
claim is Barack Obama's Indonesian School Record referenced above. Line 3 of
the document does ask for Barack Obama's country of citizenship and does say
Indonesia. However, Barack Obama's parents' completion of this document does
not mean he renounced his citizenship. In fact, Title
8 > Chapter 12 > Subchapter III > Part III > Section 1481
of the U.S. Code is very clear on this point:
§ 1481. Loss of
nationality by native-born or naturalized citizen; voluntary action; burden of
proof; presumptions
(a) A person who is a national of the United States whether by
birth or naturalization, shall lose his nationality by voluntarily performing
any of the following acts with the intention of relinquishing United States

Since a school application filled out by his parents meets none
of the above requirements, and a parent cannot renounce citizenship on behalf
of a minor, the birthers' point is moot.
MYTH: Barack Obama Is

In addition,United States v.
Wong Kim Ark established the precedent in this case:
Wong Kim Ark's demand for a writ ofhabeas
corpus,
however, was granted because of his contention that he was a United States
citizen. He charged that the Collector of Customs of the Port of San Francisco
and the manager of the steamship company had deprived him of his liberty
without due process. The U.S. District Court for Northern California agreed
that Wong's Fourteenth Amendment rights had been violated. His detention was
ruled illegal and he was released.
The U.S. government appealed the writ, implicitly challenging
Wong's citizenship before the Supreme Court on 5 and 8 March 1897. Ironically,
both sides accepted most of the basic facts of Wong's life. It was agreed that
he had been born in San Francisco in 1873, while his Chinese parents were
considered permanent residents of the city. He had visited China temporarily in
1890 and had returned to San Francisco with no difficulty in passing through
customs. It was further agreed that since his birth, Wong had never had any
other place of residence except California nor had he ever claimed to be
anything other than a United States citizen. Although his parents had returned
to China in 1890, Wong worked in San Francisco, paid his taxes, and had never
participated in any criminal acts. Most significantly, the government's appeal
conceded that the Chinese Exclusion Acts under which Wong had been detained
should not apply to him if he was indeed a U.S. citizen.
A Question of
Birthright
The government claimed that Wong's parentage should determine
his citizenship. Wong's parents were subjects of the Emperor of China at the
time of his birth. Therefore, Wong was likewise a foreign subject. According to
the appeal, Wong was also Chinese by reason of his "race, language, color
and dress." Because he did not belong to any of the classes of Chinese
allowed entry under immigration rules, he was technically considered to be a
laborer and liable to the terms of the Chinese Exclusion Act.
These arguments were no more successful in Washington D.C. than
they had been in San Francisco. The Court rejected the appeal on 28 March 1898,
over a year after hearing the case. Writing for the majority, Justice Gray
noted the Constitution's deep roots in English common law. By this tradition,
all persons born within England's domain could expect protection from the King,
to whom they were expected to owe their allegiance. Gray traced the lineage of
this concept of determining citizenship by birthplace from its English origins
to standard practice in the American states.
The Court found its strongest reason for affirming Wong's
citizenship in the Fourteenth Amendment. Ratified by Congress in 1868, the
amendment was designed to grant the rights of citizenship to persons of African
descent who had been slaves prior to the Civil War. To the majority, Section I
of the amendment was unequivocal:
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and
subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of
the State in which they reside.
It should be noted that the Dred Scott case cited by Taitz and
other birthers was decided in 1857,
a decade before the 14th amendment was ratified.

Then we see video of the president meeting with folks who have gone through re-tooling education, and he is obviously interested, engaged, and able to talk with anyone from any walk of life. It's sincere, and you can't fake that.

About the lies told by Romney with so much ease as to be shameless, don't forget the most recent one about releasing tax returns. Romney said John Kerry released only two years, so that's all he will release. Kerry released 20 years of returns -- This lie is SO egregious that if Romney does not correct it, I don't see how even "RationlOne" could be good with that!

There is the eternal Republican myth that Obama had a filibuster-proof Senate. He always had what you guys would call DINO's (Democrats in Name Only) like Lieberman and Nelson who side with the GOP may times. Lieberman even endorsed McCain in 2008. Then Scott Brown came in (to loud calls of 41, 41 from the Republicans) and even buying off Nelson and Lieberman was not enough. My political ideas don't fit too nicely in the Republican camp, but I am extremely anti-Obama. (I didn't like Bush, either, btw.) Obama has been an extremely divisive president with a "my way or the highway" attitude. I know Obama WON'T work with Republicans. PERIOD. LOL! The report on Factcheck is based ENTIRELY on data from the CBO. Well, this may come as a shock to you but the CBO is required to follow certain rules and guidelines. And who do you suppose makes those guidelines? That's right, congress. The very people that are using CBO estimates and analysis to sell us all a bill of goods. For example, it was the CBO that estimated Obamacare would cost 900 billion. They knew it wasn't true but the rules say you have to do an annual average based on a 10 year projection and the fact that Obamacare wasn't even going to start taking effect for another 3+years could not be taken into consideration. Now that some parts of the plan are starting to take effect the new 10 year projection is 1.6 trillion and independent analysis of the final cost when it is fully implemented is over 2 trillion.
Clinton ran a deficit every year he was in office. It wasn't just the SS fund he robbed money from. It was also the Civil Service retirement fund and close to a dozen other places. The Treasury Department tracks the National debt, it increased EVERY YEAR under Clinton. Can't have an actual surplus if the debt is still increasing now can you?

I'd like to see as many of Romney's tax returns as he makes his VP candidates disclose---seems fair to me. Why is he refusing to release them? What is he hiding? And since he has known he was running for President for at least 5 years, why didn't he simplify his finances so that the 2011 return could be filed on time? Why didn't he move his money onshore, if only for the optics?
Seems to me that Mitt has a vested interest in elimination of the estate tax, as well. Of course we don't know how much he would save since he only discloses ranges of values.

The software used to collapse comments will collapse the most innocuous of comments from both left and right wingers. It can be calibrated not to do that, or it can be replaced. And should have been, quite a while ago. And, although I don't know if anyone here is doing it, that software can also be gamed, just like any click response can be gamed.

Folks, it is only April and most Americans are focused on paying their bills, not on the 2012 General Election. Campaigns are like marathons not sprints. The anti Obama folks have been working diligently to continue the vetting process of him that has been ongoing for over three years. By comparison, that process is just getting underway for Romney.
Lots of gaffes and surprises lie ahead, so let's all take a deep breath, ignore the polls for the time being, and watch the comedy and drama unfold.

My silly governor, Rick Perry, (I did not vote for him) just announced that he is considering a run for President in 2016. A man who used to live in Massachusetts, moved to California, and in 2010, made a special trip back to Massachusetts to cast a vote in the special US Senate election to replace the late Ted Kennedy. When filling out his voter registration form, he put his son's unfinished basement as his place of residence. This man did not own any property in Massachusetts, and, as I said before, was residing full time in California. He's even bragged about what he did in public. The state of Massachusetts defines a place of residence for the purpose of voter registration as “where a person dwells and which is the center of his domestic, social, and civil life.” Anyone found guilty of committing voter fraud faces up to five years behind bars and a fine of $10,000.

I watch the two(The President and rumney)sit down and talk to the middle class yesterday, there is no comparison. The President was very comfortable talking to everyday people, rumney on the other hand was very stiff, almost as if didn't like being there. Rumney was told by the people he was sitting with that they felt like taxes need to be raised to help the economy, it was a "necessary evil", these were school teachers and everyday working folk mind you, hand picked by his own staff, and he look like he was at a loss for words, he just sit there like a lump on a log. You can't fake like you care, because people get a feel for bull s-it, I think rumney knew that, so he did what he do best, which was nothing. I don't even think he gave a damn about the people sitting in front of him, if he did, he sure didn't show it. My view of the election process is that candidates from both parties have a tendency to spit out talking points and be scripted. To know the real person you need to see them in unguarded, unscripted moments. The one at the picnic table showed the true Romney.
How difficult is it to appear to be comfortable speaking in front of the lazy, dependent, loser types that will listen to him and frequent posts from the likes of NBC, MSNBC and the rest. I didn't vote for Obama to make history; I felt he had better views and policies, and I still do. Check the stocks and the economy to see the improvement made by Obama. We gave him a chance, and he did pretty well considering the challenges facing him. And what part of Obama's policy is socialist??? Obamacare isn't, because it forces people to buy private insurance. Bailing out the auto industry was necessary; Wall Street didn't have the capital to do it (that's what happens in a recession), and if they did they wouldn't risk it on companies that had been bleeding money since 2006. And I personally think a healthy dose of socialism will greatly help this country.
