Obama pushes for crackdown on oil price manipulation

President Obama introduced a new round of measures that he said would make it easier for the administration to crack down on oil market manipulation amid persistently high gas prices.

“Today we're announcing new steps to strengthen oversight of energy markets,” Obama said, noting how continued high gas prices have made it hard for families to do things like commute and go to the grocery store.

Most of the new measures would require congressional approval, including a request for more “cops on the beat” for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, as well as more money to update the commission’s technology.

President Obama pushed Congress to give oil market regulators more muscle to deter price manipulation by speculators. Watch his entire statement.

Obama compared the expanding energy market to professional football, which adds more referees if it adds more teams. “Imagine if the NFL quadrupled the number of teams but didn't increase the number of refs. You'd end up having havoc on the field and it would diminish the game. It wouldn't be fair.”

The president also asked Congress to increase the maximum penalties for market manipulators and raise the amount of money required for oil futures traders to back up their trades.

“Congress should do all of this right away,” Obama said, criticizing Senate Republicans for voting down a bill in March that would have stripped oil companies of $24 billion in tax subsidies (four Democrats - Jim Webb of Virginia, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Mark Begich of Alaska – also voted against the bill).

He said that Congress’ approval of the steps announced today would be “a chance to make amends” after rejecting the oil subsidy bill.

The president did announce one measure that does not require approval from Congress: an executive order that will increase data the data shared between the administration’s Council of Economic Advisers and the CFTC on energy market trading.

Senior administration officials today would not estimate how much of an impact these new regulations would have on oil prices or how much speculative activity they would curtail, but said that the measures would boost consumer confidence that prices at the pump were not being influenced by market manipulation.

Before Obama spoke in the Rose Garden, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said that the president already had all the tools available to enforce oil market regulations through the Securities and Exchange Commission and Federal Trade Commission.

“So instead of just another political gimmick, why doesn't he put his administration to work to get to the bottom of it,” Boehner said during a briefing with reporters Tuesday morning.

Heaven forbid we should level the playing field!

After all, poor picked on big oil would go bankrupt without the $24 billion in tax subsidies we shell out to them!

Most of the new measures would require congressional approval

Lots of luck with that...

Good for him. This is about market manipulators where the focus should have been all along. I wonder if he will ever make good on his campaign promise to place a "windfall profits" tax on oil companies???? Nahhh. He is just a liar and a manipulator himself with no clue. He is out of ideas, he is out of his head and he is (soon will be) out of a job.

Winemaker makes a good point below. These regulations on market manipulation only applies to those who are U.S. based. So go ahead and pass the bill. Hell, they will move their operations offshore and there will be another entity the president forces into expat status. It will mean nothing in the global market. Smoke, mirrors, lies. This is awful. Our Amazing Kreskin president.

There is a definite need to reduce gas prices. I hope that everyone does what they can to bring them down to allow the average American to better utilize their money. But this looks more like smoke and mirrors than a viable solution.

Senior administration officials today would not estimate how much of an impact these new regulations would have on oil prices or how much speculative activity they would curtail, but said that the measures would boost consumer confidence that prices at the pump were not being influenced by market manipulation.

In other words: This probably won't help, but it sounds good, so I'll say it anyway to try to get more support for re-election.

So oil prices are the flavor of the week for Obama propaganda campaign.

Anyone remember this?

President Barack Obama said on Thursday the U.S. attorney general was assembling a team to root out any fraud and manipulation in the oil markets that might be contributing to higher U.S. gasoline prices.

Source: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/21/us-obama-oil-market-view-idUSTRE73K7B420110421

That's from April 21, 2011. Anyone ever hear from that "team"? Yeah, not a word.

Just more of a smoke screen from Obama who will talk about anything but his record.

Heaven forbid we should level the playing field!

Yet Obama cites no example, mentions no specific case or evidence of a speculation problem - of any reason for the prices to be high other than the obvious reason of his asinine energy policies.

Just another shiny stunt and predictably, the fools like Feisty .... are fooled again.

After all, poor picked on big oil would go bankrupt without the $24 billion in tax subsidies we shell out to them!

Dummy, you shell out jack squat to the oil companies. Oil companies are the most heavily taxed industry with some of the most shallow margins. The $24 billion is deductions every US business enjoys under the tax code as opposed to Obama's green-doggles/subsidies where he takes actual tax payer money, literally takes from the "poor and middle class" to give to his rich billionaire bundler buddies and their green projects.

Most of the new measures would require congressional approval

Lots of luck with that...

Yea, I wonder why Congress doesn't like to waste time passing needless, redundant legislation for Obama's political distractions and stunts.

Ben...

A windfall profits tax?? Last year about this time CBS news reported that the big 5 oil companies had an after tax profit of around 5% but yet the computer software companies and pharmaceutical had after tax profits of 15-16%. To top it all off this morning on bloombergTV, they reported that microsoft reported after tax profits of 28%. Seems that the left don't understand what they are saying, but this is FR the stronghold of liberal idiots.

More smoke and mirors from the Campaigner-in-Chief. This is just another step in his "divide and conquer" strategy .... divide the country into one group versus another and hope that the half voting for you is the "bigger half".

With Obama, he is always attacking some industry, pretending he's on the side of the "little people" ...... there will always be a villain ..... a bad guy !

That's not LEADERSHIP people ! That's playing the politics of division, and it appears all he is capable of doing.

It couldn't be Wall Street controlling the price of gas could it??? Big Oil companies certainly don't have an input on Wall Street. They don't make money on gasoline, barrels of oil have nothing to do with the price of gas.

Big Oil certainly didn't get a bill pushed in from Texas deregulating themselves so oil prices could be driven up when bullets fly through the desert.

Big Oil wouldn't want to make a profit by future trading. Oh my, did you hear, a village in Iraq shot at their neighbors, there's gonna be another war!

Better stock up on certificates of future barrels of oil, there might be a shortage.

The real culprit, said Samantha Gross, an energy analyst at IHS Global, are speculators in the oil futures market who bid the prices up, hedging their pocketbooks on the belief that conflict will get worse in the Middle East.

Fact; oil prices are set in dollars, the rail price is determined by put's and call's; how the hell are we going to control the London, German, Amsterdam,Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore stock exchanges; this is all political bull dung;

If he really wanted to do something, so far in the last 2 years, 6 refinery's in the U.S. have shut down, we export around 5 million barrels a day of sweet oil, we have shut down deep water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico (one of the three largest deposits of oil in the world. China, Brazil are now moving their deep water rigs into the gulf drilling, he cancled the Keystone project, because he wanted to get favor with the left;

the dollar is dropping in value every day, (inflation makes things cost more)real core inflation since November 2011 is around 11%(when food, fuel, medical care are included).

we are heading down the road to a total collapse and our politicians on both sides want to discuss, abortion, prayer in schools, gay rights, 2012 is going to be one hell of a year.

What would all of you oil market experts suggest he do then to ease the cost of gasoline at the pump?

You all seem to know what to do but keep it secret from the rest of the country. You all started drooling when Newt declared that he would bring gas back to $2.50 a gallon even though he never said how. The same is true with Romney.

bob, you say the reason for the current price is "obvious reason of his asinine energy policies.". So please, if it's so obvious, name these dreaded policies and how they directly effect the price of gas.

So again, what do you suggest?

The big manipulator speaks! Obama is the problem, not the solution. He likes spending our fuel dollars overseas. He wants to "necessarily quadruple energy costs" so we will be forced to use solar/wind at the much higher cost. Obama cares less for the individual, the middle class, he's for giant government that controls everything! They do so well too! The government can't run a thing right. Name one thing the governments does a good job at!!

vwterry, the last 10+ president did not have an energy policy. We seem to be happy buying from the middle east. Although domestic drilling is up, this is in spite of Obama's desire to go green (resulted in a little brown on his face, but many will say he is at least trying, even if it does cost taxpayers billions for a BK company).

Obama is only going through the same motions that every president has done the last 20 yrs when prices go up, blame speculators and price gouging by big oil and they never seem to prove it, hummmmmmmmmm. Maybe if we spend a couple of millions investigating (again) we will find something new (lol).

natural gas is down 50%, a engery source that creates less CO2 and Bush and Obama has done nothing to develop this option. We support ethanol and that is only costing Americans more by the impact it had on food cost.

Other options that Obama has pushed for that I do support is higher gas mileage std, but we Americans have to support this.

    #1.17 - Tue Apr 17, 2012 6:53 PM EDT

Saying "domestic drilling is up, this is in spite of Obama's desire to go green" is not a clear example of a policy that this administration has put in place that has caused the rise in gas prices.

I guess I will continue to wait for the naysayers to give an example of policy, not opinion and not a forecast of what might happen in the future.

Investigation, regulation and enforcement is needed to change the climate that promotes speculation. Not doing this leaves the industry to regulate itself and that has been shown to never work.

Yes Atlas, why is there no push on natural gas, one of the cheapest, cleanest forms of energy ? They say natural gas is plentiful in north America ? In the 1970s and early 80s lots of people were converting to propane, a gas that is sucked out of the air. At the time I owned a mid-sized steel fabrication company and we had two 12,000 lb. forklifts that ran on propane. It was great I thought, we could even run them in the shop with the doors closed for short periods of time.

Obama is just throwing crap against the wall to see what sticks. As if this lame initiative will have any impact. A stronger dollar certainly would, but on that front we have nothing but red ink. Massive spending, massive debt, and the Senate Democrats have decided to wait until after the election to produce a budget. Obama rips Republicans in the House all the time for failing to do his bidding, apparently the Senate Democrats get a pass for not doing their job as long as the credit card is still being accepted.

Class warfare, race warfare, partisan politics, entitlement warfare, war on women, war on big oil, war on speculators, this czar, that czar, this blue ribbon committee, that blue ribbon committee, and 94 rounds of golf later nothing has worked. Obama and the Democrats have decided division is what it will take to stay in power, and we are headed toward the most divisive election ever. Great reader, terrible leader, and all thanks to the most unqualified president ever to be elected.

We have an entitlement administration, where the wealthy are expected to pick up the tab for everyone else. But isn't that exactly what community organizing is all about? Shaking down society for those that do not want to do for themselves? Obama will go down in history as the worst president of all time after just one term, but those history books will be written in Chinese if Obama is given a second term, as this once great nation will no longer be ours.

It is a world problem beyond the reach of our President or our government. Obviously, the leader of this nation doesn't agree with any of you about his role in fixing the world's energy problems and reducing the cost of oil.....After being crushed under rising gas prices and every other commodity, suddenly, I am to believe that he cares about my problems getting to and from work, to and from the grocery store???? We are rapidly reaching a point, where if I could afford to drive to the grocery store, I can't afford to buy anything there. Gas or food.....which will it be.

          Interesting . . .

Ben lies about what is shown in the video, and when he is called an idiot, it upsets a few people. What is interesting is that they are upset at Bev for calling him an idiot, but they are perfectly willing to let his lies go, and don't get upset about his 'POS' statement.

I have to agree it was wrong for Bev to call Ben an idiot, when, from at least one patently, and provably false statement, he is clearly a liar (i.e. "No one knows for sure who he was speaking to.", note the CME sign on the podium, and when he directly names the group he is talking to). That being said, however, one could argue that it is an idiotic action to post provable, non-factual statements on a public forum. So, is Bev actually calling him a name, or just pointing out what could be arguably true about Ben?

What is really precious is jim-1455434 complaining that Bev should be banned for calling Ben an idiot, but not calling for Ben to be banned for his 'POS' statement ("It is another case of selective editing and lying from a left wing POS organization . . ."), or winemaker-4308406 for his entire post:

If you didn't state you were from Chicago that line about "all up in the face" would have made it obvious. The oil and gas industry is understandibly on the side of Republicans right now. They want to develop our own resources and this administration wants to keep sending money to other countries so they can do it instead and overcharge us for it.

Here is the lame old line from Obama and crew: Wall Street did it! At least until they decide to find a way to say Bush did it. Anything to deflect from the fact that OBama's policies are serving everyone BUT the Americans.

So Bev, go back to your chicago blog, and post your racist trash there.

So says someone who follows Bev around like a horny poodle riding her leg & hasn't popped one off in years...

Now there is an interesting comment from an old hag.

Your obsession with Bev is disturbing to say the least & frantic...

No obsession, just wondering why others have been banned for less and she's still here.

You want to talk about NASTY?

Yep, your comments do have a nasty tone to anyone who disagrees with you. Perhaps you should read your own statements prior to blasting someone else.

Go sniff your own bitches panties and leave us lefty liberals alone!

Why, you are fair game after you post your attack ads on a personal basis.

He reminds me of Rev. Wright. He is full of preacher, arrogance and know-it-all condescension. Hopeless and Changeless should be his running slogan this time. The worst failure in the white house in 40 years. The only reason his numbers aren't tanked out is because he is feeding half the nation and paying them to do nothing. Citizens like the community, the community organizer in chief can play the pipe, as in the pied piper. If you are paid to do nothing, you'll vote to save it. America is falling, just as Obama wants it. Like father and mother/ like son Obama.

LoyalTX, I had a delayed license issue with the CFTC back in the '80's. It was delaying me from going to work for a Commodity Trader. I called our Democratic Senator from Iowa--Tom Harkin to see if he could shake thier cage and speed things up. He didnt do that but one of his aids called me with a list of government assistance programs I could go on. Tom Harkin's office 212-224-3254

I think if we elect better leaders alot of the gravy train will be going away though...

You bet, it is all about political vote getting. As POTUS he commands the agencies tasked with enforcing laws, but yet he doesn't want to marshall these forces to enforce these laws. Now he wants congress to waste time on new laws that obama still won't enforce.

Last I checked oil was traded on at least 6 different international platforms and he thinks by controlling the US based traders he will control the speculation?

If speculation is so rampant the DOJ has yet to prove it let alone decide if it is even illegal.

To bad obama doesn't state what the world wide tanker tonnage is vs the tonnage sitting around waiting for oil prices to increase before off loading. After all, this is part of the message he sent today.

Perhaps he can also explain why there is not more volitity in oil prices as futures expire.

Both of the above would really indicate the extent of speculation.

What a joke earlier this year obama said he wanted to streamline government yet now through the "buffet rule" and so called specultion laws he merely compounds and complicates matters.

Yep, It is far more political than even required, especially as obama continues to pander for votes.

Since oil is priced in US dollars, next we will see him wanting to fiddle with its value as well to effect pump prices.

Hildur, you are probably right about Obama's motivation but then again, he can't get more money by fining the banks anymore since there has been a settlement to get him off their backs. So, maybe he thinks he can get the public to go along with him fining the commodities market. Narwhal room data probably tells him high gas prices annoy most people. It no doubt too the "Big Brother Watching" room to help him figure that out.

I truly wish that the liberal women in this conversation would stop making sweeping generalizations about how "all women" should think and vote. Mr Obama and his policies, and his administration have waged war on me and my family, by making it impossible for us to retain what we have worked for or achieve anything new.....I am officially dumped off the rolls of the middle class by definition and now find myself in the lower class due to job loss, property value loss, devaluation of the dollar, devaluation of stocks and investments for retirement, increased costs for health care and health care insurance....My race doesn't enter into it, and my status as a woman doesn't enter into it....wake up, look around! Are you the only people on the planet? Are you so willing to believe and blame anyone in sight for any ill fortune you may have suffered? And why does it have to be an evil plot to hurt you personally.....Can't anyone say, "Gee, this didn't work worth a darn, and I guess we had better move on and try something else?" without being considered a racist?

The better analogy is that an NFL team, say, the "Chicago Socialist Thugs" hired and fired the referees and made sure in the interests of "fairness" that the "Thugs" win all their games. Also the announcers (MSNBC ) wouldnt actually tell you the score of the game, they would just cheerlead for the "Thugs".

I guess obama didn't want to take up such issues in 2009 since he thought bush was to blame for high pump prices in 2008. Nice to see that after mostly three years of doing little, he now thinks that congress must act quickly on his agenda during the 12 months leading up to the nov 2012 elections.

Please mr obama, you would have been much further ahead if you spent more time governing your first 3 years than trying to only camapaign these last two years.

          MRWSR:

If you've been paying attention, the President has been trying to do this throughout his term, and has been thwarted by Republicans at every turn. However, the President's "Cash for Clunkers" program improved overall U.S. automotive fleet mileage and reduced energy consumption and pollution and created jobs in the auto industry at the same time. Further, the President's advancement of "Cap and Trade" (a Republican market based solution, until, of course, the President was for it) would do much reduce demand, increase supply and in a fair, free market economy, lower prices. In addition, the President has directed the Department of Defense to procure better aircraft engines and hybrid drives for Naval craft. That's three ways the President has stepped up to the plate for the future of the country. And those examples were not terribly dificult to find.

          American 2051576:

No, thank you for illustrating my point most marvelously. You are a true Titan of ironic understatement. Don't let your beak get to wet.

          Later 'taters.

          #10.11 - Tue Apr 17, 2012 3:15 PM EDT

Cash for Clunkers WAS a CLUNKER unto itself. First, it was poorly administered so that automotive franchises faced difficulties in receiving the money Uncle Sam promised. Second, it merely paid individuals who were already thinking of buying a new car anyway to jump into action .... kinda of like a druggie with "a fix". Third, after the "fix" was over, new vehicle sales fell for several months thereafter so the net increase was pretty much a wash.

Furthermore, if you truly believe "Cap and Trade" will lower prices, then I must wonder what it is you are smoking or what you injecting into your veins. Cap and Trade will raise the cost of living for individuals directly and indirectly by raising the costs of everything requiring energy usage as a part of production.

          • 6 votes
          #10.12 - Tue Apr 17, 2012 3:52 PM EDT

Cap and Trade is working well for sulfur dioxide emissions from the Mid-West into the North-East allowing for the de-acidification of lakes east of the Appalachians. But, I guess those people are stupid, wanting to fish in their lakes and all.

Secondly, and pay attention here, Cap and Trade was a Republican, free market based solution. Republican did you get that?; the party of the right wing, the Republicans. Proposed by Reagan and initiated by Bush 41 in 1990, the sulfur dioxide Cap and Trade scheme in the 1990 Clean Air Act (supported overwhelmingly by conservatives) actually reduced utility rates by 5%; actually reduced rates.

So what am I smoking? I'm smoking savings, sir, dank, sticky, couch-locking savings. Try it , you might like it.

US "surfed" the Egypt revolution without pi**ing off any faction and without one US casualty

US making progress on Iran nuclear ambitions vs. GWB Jr unilateral rejection of serious Iran proposals

US economy on continuing improvement track vs. falling off the cliff when he started

He recognizes that revenue needs to be a part of the deficit solution vs. blind adherence to Bush era tax cuts and allegiance to a no tax increase lobbyist.

Oh, and a fundamental reform of Health Care. Not everybody agrees, but at least he has a plan. Romny does or doesn’t depeding on his audience

Since the 43rd President and his chief henchman, Dick "Dick" Cheney, eliminated most controls and oversight during their closed door, hush-hush energy policy meeting in the beginning of their administration; the President is just trying to level the playing field for the American energy purchasing public.

A good start would be removing the 24 billion dollar training wheels from the oil industry like Feisty mentioned. The repubs have abused the filibuster since Obama took office. There have been more filibusters in the last 3 years than had been used between 1841 and 2008 - combined. In order to get done what he wanted to get done, Obama would need a 2/3 majority to override filibusters. So stop with your claptrap about 'one vote short of totally ignoring the right'.

The Oil Companies do not receive any tax subsidies. A subside is a payment from the government to a business or groups of businesses.

What the Oil companies receive are tax deductions for costs of business. Oil companies get the same treatment as any other for profit business receives, regarding tax deductions.

must truly be upset that our President is getting things done in spite of their stonewalling/fillibustering/taking America hostage/do-nothing efforts.

So thankful many of them will be gone from D.C. after November, then America can really get back on track and repair the damage they did 2001-2009!

Okay... but not just three things, but three things that the Republican before him FAILED:

              1. Bin Laden;

              2. Get US out of Iraq;

              3. ease the horrendous unemployment;

              4. turn the economy around;

              5. institute national affordable healthcare coverage;

...Sorry = got carried away it was so easy.

Anyhow: Do you have any other silly questions or challenges?????????

You should learn to be a little more realistic AND appreciative IMO

With No. 1 -- you would have to add one democrat and the rest just aren't true. The plan was in place to exit Iraq when obama took over; unemployment has increased under obama; the economy is far from turned around in fact it is the slowest recovery in history and indicators it will soon start off the cliff again; and finally there is nothing "affordable" about the affordable care act. The latest CBO report outline the true costs.

As to your moniker -- Oh yes you are. You are so full of your self it's laughable.

Not as stupid as yo uthink.......

Eased unemployment??????? Is that your attempt at ironic humor? Have you experienced unemployment, reduction in work hours, reduction in wages and benefits????? Have you experienced all of the above in less than four years?????

Affordable healthcare coverage?????? Another joke, I am sure. My benefits have gone way down, and my prices for premiums have gone way up....even the cost of the visit at the Dr office has increased as well as any other medical service. The cost of medications has increased as well.....So, how am I better off????? I am not getting anything for free, and a whole bunch of people are by my tax money. And soon the government will be taking more of my money and property by taxing my real estate sales at 3.8% to pay for this healthcare that I don't get.

Obama did not get Bin laden.....The American military, doing what it was trained to do, and what it had worked diligently for over the course of several years, is who "got Bin Laden" And by the way, they knew where he was and his movements, but wanted to minimize the risk to our personnel. Keeping him pinned down, under wraps was preferred to risking alot of American lives. The time and location finally became strategically viable. Stop making it sound like Barrack was in the raiding party. He didn't even know about it until after the fact.

Get us out of Iraq.....we were already committed to doing that, and demilitarization had already begun. Let me ask you something...what about the promise to close Gitmo?????

And let us not forget the President's greatest accomplishment, monumental in nature, unprecedented by any other President previously, or all of them combined......creation of a national debt that will crush generations to come.

What about the promises of transparency in government???????

Republicans will block any attempt to harm their contributors. If they blocked passage of legislation to end oil subsidies (oil welfare) you surely won't get them to pass these measures. Remember it's easier to cut social programs. Hands off the Oil industry and Defense Department. Defense contracts have to protected at all costs. Yes, you even have Democrats protecting their interests ask Mary Landrieu.

I found it ironic that Pryor (D) from Arkansas said he couldn't support the Buffet Rule because it should be handled by reforming the tax code. Good luck with that, if that was a priority for this 112th Congress it would have been done just ask Paul Ryan about his tax plan in his budget.

The Oil Companies do not receive any tax subsidies. A subside is a payment from the government to a business or groups of businesses.

What the Oil companies receive are tax deductions for costs of business. Oil companies get the same treatment as any other for profit business receives, regarding tax deductions.

You can keep calmly explaining the truth of the situation, but it doesn't fit with the whole class warfare theme, and as such, your calm explanations are not heard. The bounce off without making an impact or impression, other than to get all conservative thinkers labelled as haters of whatever is up for discussion, and if you can't be called a hater, then you must be a racist, or a wealthy robber baron.

I've always wondered why conservatives (particularly the really, really ignorant ones) continue to defend corporate greed and exploitation of the markets yet bash the average schmuck who's just trying to get by. Face it people, the deck is stacked against us, it's just too bad that so many of us have been turned into deaf, blind, brain dead party line zombies that refuse to see that we're being played. The power's that be have pitted us against each other and as long as we bicker over partisan politics (Yeah, my party's right, yours is wrong- how juvenile) they continue to sell out our country right out from under us. Keep it up people, it's getting us exactly nowhere. Trading in futures is NOTHING new, it's just gotten ridiculous, not only with oil but with food commodities as well. If we as American's finally wake up out of our media induced political ideological stupor and realize that this affects ALL of us (liberals and conservatives alike) and KICK ALL INCUMBENTS TO THE CURB, we will continue to get more of the same. The only way to get rid of the lobbyist's that have STOLEN our government is to get rid of their puppets! ALL OF THEM!!! Put party loyalty aside for a change and vote for what's best for America, not what FOX, MSNBC, or whatever the PAC commericals (outright lies, all of them) say!!!

Corporations are about profit. Profit makes investment in plant property and equipment possible - which creates jobs in their supply chain whatever it maight be for that particular corp. - and that means more jobs all the way down the line.

If you don't like what you are doing for a living do something else. I would recommend the health care industry it's a field with growth.

                      Top 10 Obama energy blunders

Wonder why gas prices are surging, with the cost at the pump topping $5 per gallon in some parts of the country? Obama’s anti-energy-producing policies certainly are not helping. The buck stops in the Oval Office, as this list of the President’s energy blunders attest.

                      1. Keystone kerfuffle

Canadian energy producers want to sell the United States an abundance of oil, if only President Obama gives the go-ahead to build the Keystone Pipeline XL. However, the President has chosen his deep-pocketed environmental backers over U.S. energy needs (and thousands of jobs for American workers). With the Middle East more volatile than ever, developing North American energy resources would help free the United States from being beholden to Islamic fanatics.

                      2. Volt vanity

After President Obama’s bailout of General Motors, the automaker turned its attention to producing the Chevy Volt. Even with the government’s help, the electric car is a flop, with few buyers and an exorbitant price. The Volt has trouble staying charged in cold weather and the battery can burst into flames long after being damaged in a minor accident. Obama’s fantasy of gasless cars is proving to be among the biggest debacles in automotive history—rivaling Ford’s Edsel and Chevrolet’s Corvair.

                      3. Solyndra silliness

President Obama made sure the $787 billion stimulus package was stuffed with initiatives meant to create green jobs by the millions. What the taxpayer got in return was a parade of bankrupt companies, led by Solyndra. The solar-panel producing company got a $535 million loan guarantee, with the promise that 4,000 jobs would be created, but end up filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year. Solyndra became the symbol of Obama’s misreading of the marketplace’s demand for green energy.

                      4. Tesla travesty

Here’s another tragic “green jobs” story. Tesla Motors received $465 million from the Obama administration to produce electric cars. So far the company has created 400 jobs, at a cost of over a million dollars per job, by producing the Tesla Roadster, with a price tag of $100,000 per car. Unfortunately, should the electric car ever become fully discharged, it would cost $40,000 in repairs. Where’s Occupy Wall Street on this?

                      5. Moratorium morass

After the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, President Obama imposed a moratorium on deep-water drilling. The action prompted oil rigs to relocate to Brazil, costing jobs in America. Obama then offered technology and support for Brazil to develop its offshore oil production, creating jobs in Brazil. Does this make sense to anyone?

                      6. Drilling dashed

It is not only the deep-water drilling pull-back that is wrongheaded. The President also refuses to consider drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge or along most of America’s coastline. And he is not aggressively pushing for shale oil extraction or natural gas drilling on federal lands. There is an abundance of energy in this country if only the President would seek to develop it.

                      7. Price pandemonium

Of course energy prices are exploding. That’s what the President wanted all along. Remember his famous utterance, saying that under his policies, “electricity prices will necessarily skyrocket.” Also telling was his selection of Steven Chu as energy secretary. Chu once said that it was important for U.S. gas prices to mirror Europe’s sky-high petrol costs. It looks like he may be getting his wish.

                      8. Cap and trade catatonic

Despite a big push by the environmental lobby, President Obama couldn’t get his convoluted cap-and-trade package through the Democratic-controlled Senate. The legislation would have raised energy costs for consumers, while enriching visionary thinkers like Al Gore, who tried to parlay his global warming alarmism into a profitable venture by cashing in on the legislation’s emission-credits trading market.

                      9. Algae acclamation

With enormous areas of shale oil deposits and oil reserves in the U.S. remaining off-limits for development, President Obama has turned his eye to America’s algae resources to solve the nation’s energy problem. The President claims that by harvesting algae, and turning it into fuel, the nation could replace 17% of the oil it imports. Mr. President, if you want to reduce oil imports, here is some advice: Drill, baby, drill.

                      10. Energy excess

It takes a village of Secret Service agents and White House aides to accompany Michelle Obama and her husband (sometimes) on vacations to Spain, Martha’s Vineyard, Hawaii, etc. With Air Force One gobbling up copious amounts of fuel, even one of the First Couples’ date nights to New York could light a town, or even Al Gore’s house. With Americans struggling to pay high gas prices, perhaps the first family can set an example for the nation and start cutting back on their excessive energy use.

I do not understand. The President said that his administration could not do anything about gas prices. So they are not sure if what they want done will be of any actual help but the administration wants it done right away. We have seen this type of thing out of this administration before. The stimulus bill had to be passed right away yet according to the administrations own report, it had no beneficial effect on unemployment. I get the feeling that this administration does not know what they are doing.

The President promised the American people that the 2012 federal deficit wil not exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet the White House is predicting that the deficit will be more than 5 times what the President promised. The President seems to be dodging this most important economic issue. I want to point out that his promise was not contingent on any action of congress. I want the President to explain how he is going to keep his promise to the American people. We are already well into the fiscal year. I also want the President to explain how we are going to pay back all of this money that we have been borrowing and how much it is going to end up costing the tax payers.

Where do they? I heard him say this on TV when he was running for office. He said that deficit spending was bad and he vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. I have seen additional information on the Internet about it. The last full year of the Bush's last term was 2008. The official figure that I recorded for the 2008 deficit was 458.55 billion dollars. 2012 is the last full year of Obama's first term. So for the President to keep his promise, the 2012 federal deficit cannot exceed 229.27 billion dollars. The CBO and the White House are claiming that the President is not going to keep his promise.

This is exactly the problem with Barrack Obama... everything he does is tied to politics,, NOT ecomomic solutions.

Everyone wants lower oil prices for Americans and American businesses ,, as high oil prices inevitably drive up prices for consumers on purchased products. But this charade by Obama does nothing to accomplish lower oil prices.

Obama is nothing more than a Used Car Salesman,, he spins his supposed policies that only the uneducated actually believe ,, the classic example being Health Care Costs,, Obama Care serves only to drive UP Health Costs and drive Private Insurer's out of business,, forcing the entire Health Care industry to rely on the Government.. well folks,, that is NOT going to happen,, Obama Care will be struck down as the massive overstep it is...

Seriously,, Obama is incompetent,, he really does NOT understand our economy,, and why would he ? No experience other than Community Organizing ,, promises to buy political votes,, and this wacky declaration today is merely more of the same,,

This is just further proof that Obama needs to leave permanently,, we must get someone in who actually understands business... right now we have an out of control spending Marxist in the White House,, and for those of you on the Left that think he is genius and a nice guy and a good speaker,, he is leading America to bankruptcy,,

All Obama had to do was work with all of Congress on the Bi Partisan Committee,, Simpson Bowles Committee,, they came up with Bi Partisan solutions,, but Obama was and remains,, too busy playing political games when we desparately need economic solutions,, Obama knew his " Tax on the Rich " had zero chance of passing either the House or the Senate,, but he pushed it to make his base happy ,, and try to collect a few truly uninformed voters to his side,, he always uses phrases that sound good but cannot work in reality ..

Anyone But Obama in 2012 ,, it would be huge upgrade from this inept President Not in Charge,, Obama should focus on all his scandals he is fighting right now,, Fast and Furious , GSA fraud and waste,, Oil Prices out of control,, dump his War on Women and Class WArfare,, and try being a real President for his last 8 months in office,,, this guy has not earned anyone's respect except for the Communist Left which backs him.

A used car salesman that has done quite a job of being President of the USA.

Check non-partisan numbers, Obama is on a 2 year streak of economic and job growth

You say "uninformed" quite a bit -- question, are you talking about yourself? Let's start with tax the "rich" shall we. Are you suggesting that the current capital gains tax rate is fair? Or that taxing the rich hurts job creation? Or that the extra money collected is just a drop in the bucket and means nothing? Or that the super rich will hide their money off shore to avoid this additional tax?

Please explain how the President (any President) controls oil prices other than perhaps a couple of pennies. I would love to hear this. Oil is a world commodity you know. So go on educate us.

What war on women are you talking about? Truth hurts?

Class warfare? Tell me what the difference is between giving handouts to the down and out versus giving handouts to the wealthy - there is a difference of course - one sucks and one really really sucks. Which one do you think really really sucks? Mitt Romney should have paid an additional $3 million last year but because his income was derived by income that is considered "special" he had an overall tax rate much lower than he should had. Let me put it this way if we asked the average working joe on the street to select a favorable tax treatment of either capital gains or working income (ordinary income) which one to you think he would choose? Yes the answer is Duh! Even the uninformed can figure this one out.

I always chuckle when I see someone write a comment acting as though the President is coming up with economic solutions by himself. Now you may dispute the particular style of economics he practices (seem to support Keynesianism) but in the end he has a team of really smart people working on the problem. Are they right all the time. History would indicate no, however, no economic discipline has ever been proven to work in all cases because the US/world economy is dynamic. Any economist who claims to know what policies work best for all cases is fooling himself. Just look at the economists President Bush had working for him. None of them predicted what was to come while he was still in office - even a few months prior to the cratering of our economy.

Did you read the Obamacare policy? Really? How much has Obamacare cost you so far (trick question)? Prior to the Obamacare did your health insurance premiums go up? By how much? Now how does that compare to Obamacare? The answer of course is you don't know because you don't -- surprise me and give me some numbers. Whether or not Obamacare survives does not change the fact that the health industry has been out of control for years. These private insurance companies that you so seem to love -- have they been kind to you? Do you have a love one with a preexisting condition that can't find medical coverage? How are those co-pays going? What, they don't cover a routine checkup (cheapest form of preventive medicine)? Your 21 year old son who is trying to find work to get money to get back in school is not covered by your insurance because he is not in school, really?

I could go on and on but I think it's your turn to show us how informed you are. Go for it!

I have heard more than one economist allude to the fact that all of Mr Obama's failed policies are failed by design, and intended to fail, creating financial chaos, desperation in the voting public, generating a fertile field for divisions for race, and economics....making more and more dependent upon the government for their daily bread and hopefully insuring our complete and questionless support of all government intrusions, all government encroachments...Instead of being inept, he is ingenious on a Macheavellian scale. Look around, he has succeeded in creating a nation where we cannot even have a realistic conversation or analysis of what is actually happening, the real experience of American citizens. He has managed to master the media, the art of spin, and completely obscure his true agenda with smoke and mirrors....Keep us looking in one direction while he tries to subvert more constitutional guarantees in another. Stir up the pot. Get Christians, Muslims and Jews all fussing at each other. Get women POed at everyone. Big business is baddddddd! It is all the oil companies fault. It is all Wall Street's fault. Ever notice that everyone else is to be blamed. This man will not own anything he has said or done, or its reality and implications for all of us.

Bo-1925019===Gas prices always go up coming into Summer. Keeping them high is this administration doings. Look Obama shut down the Gulf of Mexico for over a year. Very few permits have been issued since that time. The EPA has placed more regulations onthe coal industry, oil and gas industry and nuclear is a thing of the past. All Obama did today was to tell the world he has no idea what to do. Obama lives in bis dream world while the rest of us suffer the reality of life.

Obama has done nothing but raise the cost of living for all of us. Regulate anything and the price will go up. Oil and gas are items that are traded on the global markets and prices vary. We have Mr. Clean in the White House betting our tax dollars on alternate energy? The guy is nuts. Obama is talking alternative energy while the rest of the world runs on oil and gas. The other countries on this planet must see Obama as the biggest fool ever to get into the White House.

But Obama is telling other country leaders that he'll have more flexibility after the next election. Does that mean that the American people don't have to worry because as he becomes more flexible it will be easier to stick it to us and take this country to the depths of socialism?
