Boehner, McConnell endorse Romney for president

Updated 3:34 p.m. - House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) ended his neutrality in the GOP presidential primary and formally endorsed Mitt Romney on Tuesday.

The top Republican on Capitol Hill told reporters that he was "proud" to support Romney now that it has become clear that the former Massachusetts governor would be the Republican nominee.

"It's clear now that Mitt Romney is going to be our nominee," Boehner said at a press conference. "I think Mitt Romney has a set of economic policies that can put Americans back to work and, frankly, contrast sharply with the failed economic policies of President Obama."

"I will be proud to support Mitt Romney and do everything I can to help him win," Boehner added.

Boehner had remained doggedly neutral throughout the primary, partly due to his high-profile position. Even still, many of the other members of the Republican leadership team in the House endorsed Romney. The most visible declaration arguably came from Boehner's deputy, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), who endorsed Romney shortly before Virginia's primary.

There were points, though, in the GOP primary when Romney didn't make life easier for Republican leaders on Capitol Hill, for instance his eventual opposition to the agreement to raise the debt ceiling last August.

**UPDATE**: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also chimed on Tuesday afternood, saying at a press conference, per NBC's Libby Leist:

Yeah, I support Governor Romney for president of the United States.  And he is going to be the nominee.  And as you have noticed, the party is in the process of unifying behind him.  And I think it's going to be an incredibly close, hard-fought race.  Everybody is banding -- bandying polls around, but just look at the Gallup tracking poll yesterday actually had Governor Romney with a two-point lead.  I think it's going to be a very, very competitive election.  We're all behind him and looking forward to the fall campaign, which is actually already under way.

"It's clear now that Mitt Romney is going to be our nominee," Boehner said

Sounds more like "We're stuck with this one this time, so....yea he's the one I endorse."

So Mitt has locked up Boehner and Cantor.....bet that is a huge relief, eh?

Now if he can just get the one eyed - left handed - red head voters locked in...it should be a done deal!

OMG ...the poll numbers on here are strangely deifferent thatn anything I've heard...but I don't watch Foxnews. SHocking that a pandering lobby -bought congressman would support the non-wroking rich guy.

I hear Ted Nugent may be dead withing a year. See? And you thought gun nuts were whacko...

Really unexpected reactions from mcpaddywack and ElectionDay...

Okay paddywack, lets start with saving the US auto industry, an improving economy and job creation, saving the country from going into a depression, pushing the Ledbetter law through, over two hundred deep/shallow water drill permits, on the way to reducing his goal of reducing oil consumption (35% by 2030), strengthend antitrust enforcement, new financial regulations to keep our markets fair, free and honest, health care bill (you can debate this - I know you will), centralization of ethics and lobbying info, ending the use of torture and rendition... Enough for ya?

We are still digging out from the MESS that the GOP left us with after their reign of power for 6 years. Conservatives believe they are better at running this country, better at running it into the ground. As far as the first part of your posting, it is radical right that wants to control this country and wants everybody else to be just as nuts as they are.

GrandpaSimpson, they're all over the Gallup poll calling it a dead heat. There are other credited polls out there that give the President a 9 point lead in one and a 14 point lead in another. Polls are pretty much useless at this point.

Sure Bohmer endorses him ,he has no choice but they should have kept it quiet for about 83 percent of voters have no use for Bohner or Paul Ryan the hatchet man against all poor people.

lol Mitten's probably doesn't realize it yet, but each one of these endorsements are like another nail in his election coffin.

Boehner endorsing Romney??? Wow, that really makes me reassess my opinion of my ex-governor. What's he going to do when elected? Treat the Federal government like a hostile takeover? One Republic Maroon endorsing another. Makes me weep.

Now all Romney needs is an endorsement from Mitch McConnell and he will have received the endorsement of all the useless people in America. I met Boehner a few weeks back. He is one clueless political moron.

Oh dear.. so this is news? It is no surprise of course. But Romney needs to be careful; with cretins like McCain (you know McCain ?) the biggest loser, the biggest war monger ever and the biggest joke in the Senate promoting Romney and now the House 'cry baby' lined up…. he may have to watch his back more closely than ever.

It has been known for months that Rove and his band of politicos don't really want to win the Oval Office. And it has also been known they want Romney as the candidate because they opine he can’t beat Obama but his 'coattails' will be long enough to return them to power in the Senate and they expect to ‘keep’ the House.

Then they can stall, obfuscate, ridicule and manhandle the squatter in the Oval Office. Then as the third year approaches they (the republicats) will commence impeachment proceedings against Obama (if that is his real name), Holder and a host of others like Napolitano, Panetta and more.

An all-out vendetta which will wipe out the demagogic democats for many years to come. Oh yes, Hillary the inept and rotund Secretary of State, will also be impeached.

Wait for it folks, wait for it.

Everything about Mr. Boehner's endorsement is meaningless unless he campaigns with him. this is not even a surprise, and neither the polls numbers, and said two months ago when they were talking about gallup polling numbers, it's gallup job to make as much money and as much headline grabbing attention as possible so they're going to lean towards more people who lean right hen true independents or democrats to create a buzz. Polls aren't going to mean nothing until the debates. Once those start then they'll mean something.

One lying hate-and-fear monger endorses another.

This is the same as Palin endorsing him..... would you want the least effective and worst to want to be on your team... hahahahahaha..... Wow, the GOP has a BIG problem, everyone they present in ANY capacity are waaayyyy out of touch and don't represent any of us yet they do represent the rich and privileged. Funny, it used to be a good thing to be middle class now they all look down on all of us as if we're untouchables.

I say vote them all out and don't vote for any of their party until they come back to earth....

Romney just took two major hits against him with these endorsements...good...dig the republican hole deeper so we can fit you all in and bury you. But please leave your money behind, we'll see it goes to the hard working middle and lower classes who you've ignored.

Like you thought they would endorse Obama? It wouldn't have mattered to them if a slathering werewolf, dripping blood on the carpet had won the Republican campaign...they would have endorsed him. While the former may be more presentable, the latter may still have more class. At least the werewolf is honest when you ask if he is going to eat you.......

More establishment B.S... both of them are bought and paid for, so what does it matter anymore....The majority of the populace could stand up and vote for neither of these two guys and guess what... at this point in the game they got it so wrapped up with corporate money and backing it would make no difference what WE THE PEOPLE WANTED....They are gonna put in which ever puppet they can get cheapest!

What's actually a morbid combination of funny, sad and more than a little damning is that with the most hardcore part of the GOP base John Boehner's endorsement for Mittens will carry far less weight than Ted Nugent's.

Oh and Ted...if you indeed ARE dead within a year after the Presidents re-election (just one more reason I'll be voting for him BTW...) then your corporeal body will join your relevance to anyone who isn't an inadequate penis, over compensating drooler anyway.

                                              That died 2 decade ago.

If a house gets in your baaaybeee...
