Updated 3:34 p.m. - House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) ended his neutrality in the GOP presidential primary and formally endorsed Mitt Romney on Tuesday.
The top Republican on Capitol Hill told reporters that he was "proud" to support Romney now that it has become clear that the former Massachusetts governor would be the Republican nominee.
"It's clear now that Mitt Romney is going to be our nominee," Boehner said at a press conference. "I think Mitt Romney has a set of economic policies that can put Americans back to work and, frankly, contrast sharply with the failed economic policies of President Obama."
"I will be proud to support Mitt Romney and do everything I can to help him win," Boehner added.
Boehner had remained doggedly neutral throughout the primary, partly due to his high-profile position. Even still, many of the other members of the Republican leadership team in the House endorsed Romney. The most visible declaration arguably came from Boehner's deputy, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), who endorsed Romney shortly before Virginia's primary.
There were points, though, in the GOP primary when Romney didn't make life easier for Republican leaders on Capitol Hill, for instance his eventual opposition to the agreement to raise the debt ceiling last August.
**UPDATE**: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also chimed on Tuesday afternood, saying at a press conference, per NBC's Libby Leist:
Yeah, I support Governor Romney for president of the United States. And he is going to be the nominee. And as you have noticed, the party is in the process of unifying behind him. And I think it's going to be an incredibly close, hard-fought race. Everybody is banding -- bandying polls around, but just look at the Gallup tracking poll yesterday actually had Governor Romney with a two-point lead. I think it's going to be a very, very competitive election. We're all behind him and looking forward to the fall campaign, which is actually already under way.

Boehner's endorsement is another "Kiss of Death" for Romney! Palin and Bachmann, two total intellectual midgets, airheads, and losers will endorse him as well. Then, Darth Veder and "W" will come in to lend their support to remind everyone of the nightmare years, 2001 - 2009. Next, comes the endorsement of the TEA Party and it's group of white crackers along with the right wing, Christian Evangelicals to threaten everyone with 2nd Amendment Rights, and whoaaaaaaa----Romney simply cannot lose! FOX Entertainment Network---the Right Wing, Ministry of Propaganda---and the "Entertainment Network" that boasts it won the right to lie to its audience because lying was guaranteed to them by the First Amendment (and the Florida, 9th Appellate Court agreed with their argument in 2003 - 2004) will start turning up the heat on their white cracker audience. How can Romney lose??!??
Remember 2010? We will do it again.

@ Minoki: in as much as dems make fun of Romney finally getting a couple of endorsements....I'd bet no one...and I mean NO ONE wants Jr. one from George Jr. These others mean a slow death....his would mean instant political suicide.

Actually the latest poll I saw had Obama at 50%, and Gov. Etch-a-Sketch at 45%. At least people know where OBama stands on the issues, whereas Etch-a-Sketch.........? Only one thing is for certain: Omaba is a 99 percenter, whereas Etch-a-Sketch is a 1 percenter. People need to remember that in November.
In the bible, it is said that satan (mitt romney) has five months to reveal himself and anyone that sides with him will come to judgement to answer. So, we all know now that Boehner is going to Hell! I can't wait to see who else will publically announce that they want to go to Hell.
I think Boehner should immediately resign as House Speaker. If he can't fully support the President and his office, despite whatever objections they have politically, then there is no point in his attempt to create a facade of indifference.

Re; Gallup Poll...Lap it up by all means. That's as close as he'll get to the WH. I can post two other polls showing an Obama 9 point lead and another with a 14 point lead.
Polls are hopelessly useless at this stage.
Luckily for us, Romneycare has not a chance. He is counting on a lot of people suddenly becoming stupid and thinking the 'looking presidential' is qualification enough. It isn't.

Romney has a few problems to overcome if he wants to become President.
1. Women don't trust or like him by fairly large margins.
2. Latinos don't trust or like him by huge margins.
3. Bible belt morons don't trust him because they believe he belongs to a cult. Newsflash - He does.
4. Any rational person would not like or trust him because he's a self serving liar who panders to whoever he thinks can benefit him.
5. Anyone with a brain who does their own research will find out that his budget will add to the deficit while screwing the middle class.
If, and God I hope not, Romney gets elected you can bet that once any and all social programs are done away with we will be back to "deficits don't matter" and W will seem like a penny pincher compared to Romney/Ryan.
Really, i would have thought he would have supported Obama. The Republicans have been having so much fun saying "NO!" Now what will he do if Romney gets in? He will have to start accepting the guilt he has been so energetic in avoiding.

It is a stupid article that talks about there is no point in Obama fighting to put tighter controls on speculators who drive the oil prices up because the oil prices are coming down due to market pressures. What the article fails to address is what happens the next time oil speculators drive the price of oil up again. Do we have to have crisis before it is worth while to fix a problem that we all know that we have?

Boehner is another anti-endorsement in my book. Another worthless politician that can't get anything done and needs to be removed from office himself.
I still say that this is an election between a president that everyone is disappointed in and a candidate that no one wants.

There have been numerous tax brakes passed into law for small businesses (at least more than a dozen. Then there is the incentives provided businesses to hire returning veterans. I personally would count the Reinvestment Act as a jobs bill as well. There is also the approval of the initiation of the Keystone Pipeline project (granted it's value as a job creator has been seriously overblown). The President has approved/signed 140 deepwater drilling permits and at least another 100 shallow water permits in the face of the liars that say he's not approved them.
He's been trying to drive infrastructure bills which used to be a bipartisan goal (until Obama was elected) but the GOP has fought him every inch of the way.
They are there if you don't ignore them. The ball is in your court...

ElectionDayYet?, same request from you. Please give us that list of big issues he has to overcome for the election. I mean real issues that intelligent people will link to his (as the right likes to describe it) failed policies.
I would ask some examples of Mitt's plans, how can you bank on them. He'll change his position on them sooner or later.
