First Thoughts: Romney's own hot-mic moment

Romney’s own hot-mic moment… At Florida fundraiser (overheard by NBC’s Garrett Haake), Romney singles out HUD for possible elimination and says he wants to cut the Education Dept… He and his wife also were giddy about the Hilary Rosen flap… And Romney revealed he wants a “Republican DREAM Act” to help woo Latinos… Senate to vote on Buffett Rule at 5:30 pm ET… Team Obama rakes in $53 million in March… Anonymous donor writes Crossroads $10 million check… NYT on White House’s access to big donors… Romney, meanwhile, promises his own donors access at “Presidential Inaugural Retreat!!!

*** Romney’s own hot-mic moment: In an interview with the Weekly Standard earlier this year, Mitt Romney said he learned this advice from his unsuccessful 1994 Senate race against Ted Kennedy: don’t get too specific. “One of the things I found in a short campaign against Ted Kennedy was that when I said, for instance, that I wanted to eliminate the Department of Education, that was used to suggest I don’t care about education,” he said. “So I think it’s important for me to point out that I anticipate that there will be departments and agencies that will either be eliminated or combined with other agencies.” But at a Florida fundraiser Romney attended last night -- which NBC’s Garrett Haake overheard because he was sitting on a seawall outside the home -- the former Massachusetts governor got MUCH MORE specific. Indeed, it was in a way Romney’s own hot-mic moment, where he was more open about his plans than he’s been to voters and reporters to date.

In a speech to donors at a closed door fundraiser in Palm Beach, Florida, Mitt Romney laid out plans to consolidate federal agencies, reform the tax code and win back Latino voters. The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports.

*** Eliminate HUD, cut Education Department: He singled out HUD for possible elimination. "I'm going to take a lot of departments in Washington, and agencies, and combine them. Some eliminate, but I'm probably not going to lay out just exactly which ones are going to go," Romney said. "Things like Housing and Urban Development, which my dad was head of, that might not be around later.” He said he’d cut the Education Department, though not eliminate it entirely, referring again to that 1994 Senate defeat. "The Department of Education: I will either consolidate with another agency, or perhaps make it a heck of a lot smaller. I'm not going to get rid of it entirely." Romney also identified specific loopholes and deductions that he’s eliminate to finance his across-the-board tax cut. "I'm going to probably eliminate for high income people the second home mortgage deduction," Romney said, per Haake, adding that he would also likely eliminate deductions for state income and property taxes as well.

*** Giddy over the Rosen flap: At the fundraiser, Haake adds, both Romney and his wife Ann remained absolutely giddy about last week’s Hilary Rosen flap. "It was my early birthday present for someone to be critical of me as a mother, and that was really a defining moment, and I loved it," Ann Romney said. The candidate went further, calling the episode a "gift" that allowed his campaign to show contrast with Democrats in the general election's first week. But while Romney said last week that “all moms are working moms,” that doesn’t apply to mothers who are welfare recipients, the Boston Globe says. Romney said at a Jan. 4 campaign stop in Manchester, N.H.: “Even if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work,” Romney describing his position as Massachusetts governor. “And people said, ‘Well that’s heartless,’ and I said ‘No, no, I’m willing to spend more giving daycare to allow those parents to go back to work. It’ll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.’”

*** Romney wants a “Republican DREAM Act”: Here’s a final bit of news from last night’s Romney’s fundraiser: He said the GOP must offer its own policies to woo Hispanics, including a "Republican DREAM Act," to give Hispanic voters a real choice between the two political parties. So Romney here is admitting the obvious: He and his party have A LOT of work to do with Latinos. Why? Consider this: Obama can get to 270 electoral votes (275 to be specific) by winning the following battleground states: Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Virginia. Under the scenario of this Hispanic path (CO, NM, NV, and VA), Obama doesn’t need to win Florida, Ohio, Iowa, or New Hampshire. That’s right -- this is a viable path to 270 that does not include EITHER Florida or Ohio. It’s pretty stunning.

*** Senate to vote on Buffett Rule: Congress is back from its Easter/Passover break, and the Senate today votes -- at 5:30 pm ET, per NBC’s Libby Leist -- on the so-called Buffett Rule, under which millionaires would have to pay an effective tax rate of at least 30%. We’ve talked plenty about the presidential politics of the Buffett Rule, but here’s something additional to consider: How do the individual senators vote? We’re looking at five running for re-election/election in November: Jon Tester (D-MT), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Scott Brown (R-MA), Dean Heller (R-NV), and Bill Nelson (D-FL).

*** Team Obama rakes in $53 million-plus in March: In a video, the Obama campaign announced this morning that it raised more than $53 million in March -- the campaign, DNC, and other committees. It added that 567,000 contributed to the campaign last month, and the average donation was $51. We won't know until April 20 -- the filing deadline for March -- how much of that $53 million was from the campaign, DNC, etc. But for February, the campaign announced raising $45 million, and the split was $21.3 million for the campaign and $24 million for the other committees. To put these new Obama numbers into perspective, for March of 2004, the Bush-Cheney campaign raised $26.2 million, and the RNC brought in $18.8 million. That's a total of $45 million. To date now, the Obama campaign and DNC have raked in nearly $370 million this campaign cycle.

*** An anonymous $10 million check: But that campaign money is only part of the story. On Friday, the Washington Post reported that an anonymous donor gave the Karl Rove-backed Crossroad GPS a $10 million contribution late last year. Unlike American Crossroads, which is a Super PAC and which has to disclose its donors, Crossroads GPS is a 501c4 and doesn’t have to reveal the identity of its donors. So with one check, an anonymous donor gave this conservative outside group about half ($10 million) of what the Obama campaign raised in February ($21.3 million).

*** White House access for big donors: There are a couple of other fundraising stories. First, the Sunday New York Times reported on the White House access that big Obama donors have received. “[T]he review showed that those who donated the most to Mr. Obama and the Democratic Party since he started running for president were far more likely to visit the White House than others. Among donors who gave $30,000 or less, about 20 percent visited the White House, according to a New York Times analysis that matched names in the visitor logs with donor records. But among those who donated $100,000 or more, the figure rises to about 75 percent.” It’s worth noting that for all the reforms Team Obama has instituted – not taking lobbyist money, making the White House visitor logs open to the public, efforts to rein in the lobbyist revolving door – it’s received very little political gain. In fact, you could argue that it’s created more pain… (The fact is most Democratic lobbyists and big donors don’t believe they get any special treatment from this White House, and they complain loudly about this. As the re-election has geared up, Team Obama has tried to make these folks feel better, only to have their efforts get correctly flagged for coming across hypocritical.)

*** Romney camp promises donor access at “Presidential Inaugural Retreat”: The Romney campaign pounced on yesterday’s New York Times story. “Less than four years after promising to drive special interests out of Washington, President Obama has done the exact opposite—granting top donors special favors and access to his White House,” said spokeswoman Andrea Saul. “This is just another example of President Obama’s failed record, which he’ll be desperate to hide from voters this November.” But get this: Buzzfeed reports that Romney “is already offering top donors access to a special ‘Presidential Inaugural retreat,’ planned on the assumption that he will be elected president this November. The offer, in a fundraising email circulated by a top Georgia supporter to fellow Republicans and obtained by BuzzFeed, is one of several goodies offered to those who contribute more than $50,000 to the joint fundraising committee known as ‘Romney Victory.’ Those donors will be named ‘Founding Members’ of Romney Victory and invited to a California retreat with Romney and offered ‘yet to be determined access at the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August.’”

*** On the GOP trail: Romney attends a Red Sox game at 11:00 am ET and also gives an interview to ABC. Later in the day, Romney heads to Philadelphia, where he speaks to a Tea Party group… Also, Gingrich attends a fundraiser in Texas.

So because a Democratic strategist singled out a wealthy woman who undoubtedly had cooks, servants and nannies and who came from a wealthy family so never had to have a part-time job as a teenager or college student, the Democrats have "declared war on moms"?

Ann Romney is no more a typical "stay at home mom" than the "Real Housewives of (fill in the blank)" are REAL housewives.

mas098 ... and which Romney home (of the many) would you be referring to? Suggesting Anne Romney has never had to work a day in her life is not necessarily calling her a "bad mother." It is only saying that she has had a privileged life that many women (particularly single mothers) have not been fortunate or lucky enough to have. And that does not imply jealousy or envy on the part of the those that haven't. It is just a fact of life ... that some have had it easier than others. And to compare the life of a wealthy and privileged woman to a woman of far lesser means is irresponsible and insensitive, much like the average far-right Republican these days.

The “One”

Our young President, lacking moral and leadership experience other than a social agitator, was doomed from birth to fail as a leader of men. He was born of an atheist European-American mother and an African father steeped in revenge to level the playing field on a global level. Barack Obama’s Grandfather “Hussein Onyango Obama “was arrested in 1949 and jailed for two years by the British in Kenya for subversive activities. This action created an intense racial hatred of whites, particularly the British in the Obama Family. His deep Moslem roots will one day penetrate the heart of Israel. This racial hatred of whites and Jews was passed to Barack’s father and later to our President. It must be in their African Moslem genes.

One of Obama’s first actions as president was to quickly return to the British the bronze bust of Winston Churchill that was in the oval office. Obama did this to show his disdain publicly for the British. Years later after Barrack had his revenge on the great Satan; he was finally removed from office. The next and last American President had a mess to clean up in the White House. The first action of the new president was to promptly remove the busts of Barrack and Michelle and ship them back to Kenya. It is no wonder Obama was denied an invitation to the British Royal Wedding in April, 2011. Michelle was very distraught that she could not attend and be seen in one of her princess gowns. She lamented that it was unfair since she was also royalty.

He wants "Welfare" moms to have the "Dignity of Work" by requiring them to put their kids in Day Care and get a job.

However, his own wife, whom he professes to love, does NOT DESERVE THE DIGNITY OF WORK!

SHE NEVER worked outside the home. She has NO DIGNITY! Mitt, you are at least honest, to say your wife is beneath a Welfare Mom, and is beyond help.

Bookwerm--the difference remains this: Ann Romney chose to stay at home to raise her kids. She neither needed nor took any government aid to do so. Is it so wrong to require people who suckle at the government teat to actually put forth a little effort towards supporting themselves and their own families they chose to have? Why is it my responsibility to pay their and their families' way in life while they sit home contributing nothing?

They gave up nothing for her to be able to do that. Mittens is all out for himself and the elite, this election is just another feather in his hat and a ego boost for him.

Barack’s father became an expert on social justice, milking his blackness for every ounce of affirmative action and social promotion. The advancement of his cause was paramount, even at the expense of family and others. According to him, the evil European and European-Americans had stolen the natural resources of Africa, colonized the continent, and enslaved the population. The lack of progress in Africa had to be blamed on someone.

The senior Barack Obama abandoned Barack Jr., when he was only 2 years of age. Barrack’s donor of sperm thought it was better to pursue his immoral convictions of social justice and need for racial revenge, than to be a father and common law husband. Besides, he could always find an ample supply of liberal like-minded white woman that would serve his every need. It was like buying a candy bar at the grocery store; if you run out, you can always get another one cheap! How could a good Muslim Man let his wife be seen in public without the head to toe covering? If Barack’s mother would not either cover up or shut up, Barack Obama Sr. would have to leave. He also knew that gullible Americans would always provide for all the financial, physical and emotional needs of the young Barack. Since Barack was half African, it had to mean that his ancestors were mistreated and held as slaves years ago by the evil European-Americans. This terrible crime against nature had to be avenged! The shortcomings of the African race throughout the universe must be blamed and transferred to others. Nothing could ever be his fault! Barack soon learned to dislike being of mixed race. He was having trouble even getting to first base with young impressionable female conservatives. Barack thought it must be his “Old Spice Cologne”, not that he was damned at birth to be a Progressive, destined to destroy America and remake the country in his vision of Marxism. Barack seemed never to come to terms with being of mixed race, that of a Half White American and Half Arse Kenyan. . If you ask me, he turned out to be Half-Ass! His mother often late at night would overhear the young Barack fussing at himself, “You Cracker”, your N__ger. This would go on for hours at a time.

Well, sooner or later Romney's going to have to put up or shut up. The hand writing is on the wall to where the tired old Republican bashing of the President is getting them. Also on the wall is the failed policy of tax cuts for the past 25 years. Fact, the Republican party is in shambles as well as the country from their failed ideology and I don't see where a lying, flip flopping, two faced 1% stiffy is going to emerge as their hero in shining armour. In fact it's going to get worse for the Republicans. Bachmann is going to endorse Romney and probably Palin. Gregory on MTP grinned as let Bachmann rant and rave and show her ignorance. She'd have been better off had he stopped her then to let her display such ignorance. The American people can't be that stupid.

The Dimocrap have run this state for over 50 years and have run it into the ground!Six Cities have filed for bankruptcy this year and there are a few lager ones waiting in the wings to file! Thank you Big Unions and The DimoCrap Party!

I really don't care what he said on a hot mic. He will be a better leader than the commie president we now have. He cares what happens in America unlike Obama that wants us to be as all other countries under the tight-hold of a socialist government. I am all for eliminating many programs and combining the necessary ones. I think Ann deserves to stay home if the family could afford it and do believe a welfare mom should work if she has children she can't stay home and support. I really don't feel as he said they need to pay for child care though bc everyone else pays or stops having kids they can't afford. Ann has a disability that she struggles with although she is in remission right now, and she has battled with breast cancer too, so her everyday struggles are more than some that go to work everyday. We need a president to lead the country and we need to learn to take care of ourselves unless we are disable and I don't put alcoholics or cocaine addicts in the disability category.

OMG...NO MATTER WHO IS RUNNING AGAINST HIM.

I quit paying attention to anything Mitt Romney says because he contradicts everything he says. How would you feel if the President said We are at war,I think, wait a moment,no, were not at war but could be at anytime or the economy is getting better but not right now Im told.He far and away is the waffler of all wafflers. You cant trust a word that comes out of his mouth. If the consequences werent so great it would be humorous ,but its anything but that.

The biggest hurdle Obama has is to convince a traditionally undervoting demographic to show up for him again, as he hasn't done much of the real Democrat agenda he promised - personally, I think his first term has mirrored George HW Bush's closer than any Democrat's. However, ya gotta show up, because no matter WHICH Mitt Romney shows up, he's still worse for you than Obama is!

It's not possible to be worst than Berrie! Change is what we need! We need someone of a different political point of view to reverse of the policies of Berrie and hopefully make America proud of itself again! I think most Americans are tired of looking in the mirror and feeling ashamed of our current President and ashamed of some of his policies that have embarressed us all!It seems every day something comes up, that as an American,i'm embarrassed about!Vote for your country for a change,BURY BERRIE-2012!!

I went out this morning. First to the bank, then to a restaurant, and then to the grocery store. There was a help needed sign on the grocery store and the restaurant. I haven't seen one of those in a long time and to see two in a row! I can feel the economy getting stronger. I am very glad to see it happening and I continue to keep a positive attitude toward the U.S.A.

AKA ... has any President in history created high-paying jobs out of thin air? It is corporate America and entrepreneurship that historically creates jobs. Corporate America and the banks were saved by the Obama administration and are sitting on trillions in profits since 2009, but have not responded by hiring. Why? Because they have discovered how to be more productive with less manpower (to the detriment of the rank and file worker -- middle class). So stockholders/investors and senior management ... you know ... the 1% have prospered since the end of the recession, while middle class continues to suffer. And how is this Obama's fault? Huh?

It is not obama's fault. I pay the same tax rate as these ceo's when you average out total gross income and the total tax amount. But they have billions left in their swiss bank accounts and I have to worry about how to make ends meet

Willard Mitt Romney was born Willardo Guante Romeo in Mexico by a mother who was a Mexican national and a father who was a French ex-patriot. His father's distant cousin George Romney took him when he was a boy to Michigan; where he changed the boy's name and obtained a fake birth certificate, in a grand plan to one day install him as President of the United States to destroy the country so as to complete Montezuma's revenge.

The whole discussion emitting from what Romney's wife said about having to make a choice is rather silly . If one has the wealth of the Romney's it is common sense to know that she had no choice to make. On the other hand if you do not have the financial means to stay at home to take care of your children and really have to go out to work to make ends meet then you DO have to make that choice. Which by the way is a very difficult one to make !!

The Romney's have made the whole item into something big just to keep the ball rolling !!!! If anyone really thinks that Mit Romney cares as to whether you have to make a choice or not then you are not thinking intelligently.

There are, after all, many mothers who have to go out to work and others work from home as a financial backup . Mrs Romney also has had the other luxury of having the best medical care possible during her problem with cancer. Mit Romney wants to cut back a lot of the medical care given to all women and how he even has the nerve to say that he and his party are not conducting a war on women beats me !!!!

Senator Barack Obama Explaining his 2006 Vote Against Raising the Debt Limit

From Sen. Obama’s Floor Speech, March 20, 2006:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

How many times was the debt sealing raised during the G.W. regime? That's right. Many more times then since President Obama has been in office and back then the Repukes seemed to have no problem with it. Why now? Memory loss?

Romney is a REAL Business Pro. He's invested in and partnered with Communist, Socialist and every other foe in the world of ours as our Nation crumbles he makes good money off of his investments. He openly says he's very successful, and still at it to this day! So if you soon hear him say to this Nation, let them go bankrupt, you know he's only thinking of what is the best thing for him and his party. I mean, hell, that's just doing business. Like the government staying out of the free markets like gas prices for say. It's about the bottom line and the investors, everything else is just minutia and waste.

But some on here would actually take all that information and somehow digest it as a positive thing and vote for him because they think they know that anyone is better than Obama for this Nation.

They believe that? ha ha ha ha Fools.
