Bachmann steps closer to endorsing Romney

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday morning, Rep. Michele Bachmann said she is “seriously looking into” endorsing presidential candidate Mitt Romney.  The remarks are the closest the former GOP presidential candidate and Minnesota congresswoman has come to making an endorsement since dropping out of the race on Jan. 4.

Citing the decision by Romney’s chief rival – former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum – to suspend his campaign last Tuesday, Bachmann said there is a “uniting and pulling together around our eventual nominee.”

“I have said that I want my voice to be one of uniting our party, the independents, the main stream, the conservatives, evangelicals, the tea party movement,” Bachmann continued, adding, “I’m waiting for our party to come together and help in that process.”

Bachmann’s ecumenical view was not as pronounced during her own run for the GOP nomination, which was marked by frequent shots at Romney over the health care program he launched in Massachusetts in 2006.

Sunday morning, jousting with New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Bachmann called Romney “smart” on job creation.

“Mitt Romney also understands how to turn around companies," she said. "The United States government needs to have a turnaround person who knows how to be successful."

Underlying the back-and-forth was the controversy that stoked hours of cable news coverage this week, when a Democratic strategist suggested that Romney’s wife, Ann, was unqualified to advise her husband on the economic struggles facing women because she had “never worked a day in her life.”

Bachmann called the remarks by the strategist, Hilary Rosen, “shocking and insulting.”

“When 92-percent of the people under Barack Obama’s failed economic policies are women who’ve lost jobs, that’s an unbelievably shocking number,” Bachmann added, reviving a statistic Romney himself used last week, which prompted a slew of fact check pieces.

(The statistic also came under fire minutes earlier on the broadcast, during an interview with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who called it “ridiculous and deeply misleading.”)

Facts, figures, and controversies aside, the exchange this morning seemed to underscore the degree to which both Republicans and Democrats view women’s votes as crucial in the upcoming general election.

“This election is not going to be about Ann Romney or Hillary’s remarks,” Gillibrand said.  “What this election is going to be about is which candidate fights for America’s women.”

Bachmann didn't immediately respond but when she did, she said, "One thing that women are saying is that Mitt Romney is an extremely smart guy. He's been successful in creating jobs in the private economy, and that's something that Barack Obama has not been able to do."

I have more respect for Bachmann than any of the lying liberal pundits!

I see the Washington Post reported very good ratings for the Today Show episode in which Sarah Palin was featured! .... out performing GM American who had Katie Couric as a host.... the silent majoriy again shows its strength...

Except an awful lot of us watched little Sarah because we needed to start the day with a hearty laugh!

Her moronic behavior and total lack of insight about that never gets old.

Neither do the people who are so deluded that they can't see through her b.s.

You right Bob -- Bachmann never said God would elect her President. She said God TOLD her to RUN for president. What's funny according to rick Perry and Rick Santorum -- God told both of them to run too. But God and I had a conversation just yesterday (on the golf course) and he told me he's not a Republican.

What, exactly, is a free market? Is that one where the govt sits back and allows collusion to drive up the price so consumers get raped, the way Goldman and the oil companies are doing now? That doesn't seem free. It seems expensive and held hostage by special interests. There is no such thing as a free market. Either the govt regulates businesses or businesses control the consumer with a headlock. Put another way, it's in the govt's interest to make sure that no one facet of industry gets such a death grip on things that consumers are crippled. It's in businesses best interest- or most think so- to try and extract every penny they can from everybody they can. Do you like your cable bill? Thank de-regulation.

He said for his followers to be "no part of the world" and yet here these wackos like Bachmann, Perry,Sanitoarium, and Romney act like God must have changed his mind. 1) 122% of the people that lost their jobs were women. The 6 men that lost their jobs used to be women. Those of us that claim not to be women are lying.

2) The best adviser to a president on women's issues is one that is a job creator... she hired a nanny, a cook, a driver, a personal assistant, a tennis pro, and bought her own restaurant to have tea in. Perfect.

Seriously? 93% of those that lost jobs were women? What idiots. You really want these morons analyzing our economic data and providing corresponding solutions based on their profound knowledge?

There has never been a pair of people as out of touch as these two seem to be... maybe Bachmann can advise the since she's so "in touch" with us all.

True Patriot and john,

Michele Bachmann will not have a easy race this time. The DFL just nominated Jim Graves to run in the 6th district. Jim Graves is the chief executive of Graves Hospitality ,owning a number of hotels. His employees are unionized and the local has endorsed him . He has deep roots in the district in St. Cloud. He said he will use some of his own money plus donations to combat the 3millon Bachmann raised to keep her seat in 2010.

As Graves told the convention," We're coming out of the gate full steam ahead, no distractions. And we can focus on the big picture, which is Nov 6, and address issues straight on with Michele Bachmann and get on with the dance."

Michele will have her work cut out for her here in MN... and she will lose.

Bachmann never met a fact she didn't create, except for some of the facts that she's repeating that Romney created. I live in her district, and even I don't think she's relevant enough to appear on national TV and make comments like what she keeps doing. If anything, her endorsement of anyone would be the kiss of death given how crazy she is. Remember 200 million a day for the president's trip to Asia? How about the immunizations that cause retardation in girls? My favorite - $2 gas, guaranteed if Bachmann became president. She's entertaining, in a very twisted way, but should never be believed.

Derek 908, Ron Paul 2012? When that's probably appropriate on the day the Titanic sank. No sane ideas, no money, little support, polling in the single digits, can't win a primary, few delegates, says he won't run third party, and no chance.

Devil's Son

Just for clarity you might want to read some news that is not biased.

Ron Paul took over the Nevada GOP and has over half the state delegates.

Did the same thing in Iowa.

Did the same thing in Washington.

Doing the same thing in Minnesota.

Doing the same thing in Colorado.

Doing the same thing in Maine.

Beat the President in a poll last week bettering Romney

Two weeks ago in a poll he got over 17% Nationally If he ran third party. What is a win 34%?

You underestimate Ron Paul's support. Every time he asks for money, his coffers get filled $100 at a time. And it might be interesting to note that it only took a third of the population to start our first revolution, and it is a long time until November.

    #1.33 - Sun Apr 15, 2012 9:12 PM EDT

NorthstarDFL-- Good information, thanks! The GOP is having a hard time in a lot of states, such as Nevada. Karl Rove's $200 million through the Crossroad's Super PAC can only do so much.

Hahahaha(snort) hahahaha! Thanks for the good laugh. Looks like you and Michele Bachmann didn't get the memo about the "92% of jobs lost were women's" claim and the fact-check problem. And that's Ms. Secretary of State Clinton to you.

john-737278 -- Agreed that people underestimate the delegates for Ron Paul as well. But this says more about the disarray of the Republican Party, including not only the gender gap, but the enthusiasm gap for Romney.

I think it says more about the morals of our youth and some of the elders like me, refusing to be responsible for the mistakes of everyone that voted before them. They have serious issues paying into a system for 40 years only to have nothing to show for it in the end. And who can really blame them.

      Dennis, Columbus, Ohio

34% is a little more than 1/3 of the country. If the popular vote is split three ways, the electoral college becomes mute. It is then up to Congress to decide who the next President is. And if the popular vote were to go to Paul and the Congress made someone else President, they would have a true revolution on their hands.

Let's face it. The only reason that Romney is perceived to be the nominee is because of the media, the 5% of hard line Republicans who have voted, and his money.

The Democratic party has lost 7% of registered Democrats, and most of the only people who support the President are the 5% hardliners. And if it wasn't for the over the top political correctness, he would have been impeached for abuse of authority and perjury of oath.

That leaves over 80% of America who are really pissed off that they have no representation. That representation is what Dr Paul represents.

Oh, and just imagine if he can get 17% in a national poll being treated as supposedly unelectable, what he would be getting if the news was not biased.

Wow, Dennis, I'd like to see John back up all of those 'statistics' he is citing, and his accusations of impeachable and 'perjury of oath' offenses by the President with actual facts from reputable sources.

John, the term is 'moot', not 'mute', and just getting 34% of the popular vote (which Ron Paul will never be able to achieve) is not enough because of the electoral college. What matters more is where that 34% of the popular vote comes from, and how it affects the electoral college count.

John, as much as you'd like it to not be so, Ron Paul is unelectable, and thank God for that. The man would CRASH the US economy within 3 months, and the world economy in 6, if the congress were to go along with any of his economic ideas. The man is very smart, and knows his history, but has drawn the wrong conclusions from that knowledge . . . in fact, he has drawn very dangerous conclusions, if he were to become President. Our so called political representatives refuse to put any controls on the markets, therefore ,we have to pay the prices. That is why no-one can live on a minimum wage and why most of our work goes overseas.

If Barack Obama is Responsible for what Hillary Rosen says, then why is Mitt Romney not responsible for what Michelle Bachmann says? Michelle Bachmann voices the most outrageous lies every time someone puts a mic in front of her face. Michelle Bachmann is as close the Romney Campaign as Rosen is to the Obama campaign.

Senator Kirsten allowed Michelle Bachman to interrupt her and talk too damn long of every issue and off topic. Being nice and considerate in conversation with Bachman will never get you a word in. This entire conversation was ridiculous and Bachmann's supposedly endorsement means nothing cause she's a dingy and nutty representative.

Sometimes, letting people like Bachmann run off at the mouth like that is a good thing. People become very annoyed, and begin to realize that she is simply an empty vessel.

It does look like many agreed with those comments as voted up. Sorry that you are so sensitive and need to defend Ms. Bachman from name-calling. Let's remember this is a rep. that got her fame by saying there should be investigations of congress members for "anti-American sentiment". Talk about name-calling, how soon you forget. These are the same members she shares seats in congress yet she has this much distrust of them. This is a women who started the teaparty caucus whose many members do not think this POTUS is legitimate. This is a woman who knows the seven congressional representatives who tried to get a birther bill passed for future Presidents. I and many others will call her what she has demonstrated and shown herself to be. And from what we have seen GranCanyon, you are being a true hypocrite in defending Bachman; pot meet kettle.

Meanwhile, because Obama has dark skin and a foreign-sounding name, the lunatic fringe -- yeah, you heard me -- accuses him of every crime in history, up to and including the extinction of the dinosaurs.

“When 92-percent of the people under Barack Obama’s failed economic policies are women who’ve lost jobs, that’s an unbelievably shocking number,”

What in blazes does that even mean? Who are the people under Barack Obama's economic policies? Are there not 300 million Americans? Are 92% of us (270 million plus) women who have lost jobs? Or are most of us not "under" economic policy? Are we therefore "above" them? The bizarre thing is that she has no idea her sentence makes no sense whatsoever.

And who are the people that keep voting that idiot Bachmann into office? Is this all some nefarious plot by Boris and Natasha? Is Bachmann really Natasha Badenov in disguise?

Even though right-wingers threaten not to come on unless you throw softballs, try! After reading this thread I decided to skip MTP today.

I find it amusing and tiresome that every repug automatically refers to ANY AND ALL news that doesn't favor the reactionaries as a product of "liberal media" as if all of it is liberal. Also amusing that Wailin Palin could blame an interviewer for ambushing her with a question as easy to hit as a beach ball but she thinks she could go toe-to-toe with world leaders in conversations and negotiations. News is news. Deal with it. The success of TARP and Detroit should be good news to all Americans and yet the teabaggers want to hope for bad news and blame good news on the "liberal media". Unbelievable. Dems were accused of HOPING for bad news in 2004 to try and beat bushco. But the teabaggers have actually been trying to MAKE BAD NEWS TO BEAT Mr. Obama. You should be ashamed,Bob. Your hate for Obama outweighs your love for your country.

I disagree. She is smart. She totally owned Senator Kristen on MTP and David Gregory must have been checking the baseball scores on his phone, because he let her do it. Bachmann is a skillful liar and the senator from New York was no match.

Bachman seems to have no gainful employment other than occasionally warming her chair in Congress and showing up endlessly on one TV program or photo op after another. She obviously collects her federal paycheck and farm subsidies, but what has she actually accomplished as a representative for her district and the State of Minnesota? Her congressional career is completely bereft of anything except frequent rants about "Obamacare" (does she actually know that the legislation is the "Affordable Care Act"?), reminding everyone that she has somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 children, her former job as a tax attorney and.....that's it. She has no legislative accomplishments other than tagging her name on to some goofy light bulb bill. Why do news programs continue to feature this person as if she has something worthwhile to say or contribute? She's like Sarah Palin, great at partisan criticism, but never an original and thoughtful idea on how to solve at least some of the nation's problems - other than offering the standard Republican bromide of no taxes, get government out of the way, no regulations, drill, drill, drill, and more christianity for all. Hopefully, the voters in Bachman's district have finally had enough of this grifter and will elect a responsible adult to the seat she now holds but rarely occupies.

This was the worst moderation of a segment I have ever seen. Letting Bachmann interrupt and prattle on with the same talking points over and over and over ad nausium was disgusting. David you bias is showing more and more on every show. You need to learn to stop people like Bachmann from eating up time saying the same thing 2 or 3 times and call her out on her lies.

You said you would let Kirsten Gillibrand respond to Bachmann and then asked her about the freaking Secret Service scandal. REALLY!!!! This show was bad.

Let me decipher what I have just watched, Bachman talks non stop as to what a great man and leader Mitt Romney is and does not give him her endorsement when given the chance, WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE IN MINNESOTA SMOKE to have her as an elected representative.

She is invited on Meet the Press due to the fact that she will always embarrass herself with her psychotic look and her 4 LBS. of makeup, demos could have sent someone who could have really buried her but Gillibrand does not have the sharp teeth yet, when she was interrupted for the third time by Alfred E Newman she should have asked Michele do you ever wonder why you were the first one out.

GT from NYC: I personally enjoy watching Meet the Press and feel Gregory is very good at his job. There are many times I don't agree with what his guests say but I like to hear other people's points of view. Gregory is not there to control what people say, if you want controls on what people say move to China.

I didn't see the show, but maybe Gregory was giving her enough rope to hang herself. Either that, or he was cynically giving in to the P. T. Barnum theory of entertainment: loud and crazy is always more entertaining than competent and thorough. All these ultra-conservatives treat reality as some Bible-flavored version of World of Warcraft, except without any semblance of strategy.

Gregory has made MTP a side show. If you want to watch something that will make things much more clear watch "UP with Cris Hayes" Sat and Sun mornings. Great show with representation form both side and moderated in a way that does not allow interruptions and shouting.

Here's the deal: The economy is steadily improving, job losses have turned around, (Obama didn't create the Great Recession anyway) the auto bailouts worked, the bank bailouts are actually paying back plus interest, we're getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan, O'bama was OTJ when Bin Laden got snuffed, Bachmann is a crazy beatch, and she'll sink Romney by attaching her boatload of crazy religious whack-a-doos on to his floundering canoe of a campaign.

Obama wins re-election in a walk and things get better while the Republicans desperately try to wreck the country for the sake of their own political skins. History is passing you superstitious nuts right on by.

I hear a lot of conservatives question the success of the auto bailouts, however I never hear them question any other bailouts.. like the ones for AIG, Citi, and the rest of Wall Street. Wall Street has paid back a good portion of the money, but their bailout was a dismal failure since they have sat on the money they made with that interest-free loan we gave them. Instead of reinvesting it in this country. They continue the same crappy, crooked, corrupt policies that got us in this mess and continue to throw American families out on the street by the boatload.

The auto bailouts succeeded because they did what they were designed to do... save jobs, communities, and the last vestige of our once-great manufacturing base..
