After being bit by a penguin, Gingrich says he's the underdog

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The day after Newt Gingrich was bit by a penguin at a zoo, he acknowledged he is “the underdog” and said his campaign began renting their donor list because they needed money.

"Money -- it is a very common reason why people rent things out,” Gingrich said standing inside the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C. “We wanted the money.”

Being roughly $4.5 million in debt has caused the Gingrich campaign to rent out their list of donors, POLITICO reported Friday.

Campaign debt, Gingrich said Saturday afternoon, could factor into who former presidential candidate Rick Santorum may endorse.

Following a tour of the NASCAR museum, Gingrich said he spoke with Santorum in St. Louis, Mo. but only briefly. (This was the same day the Speaker visited the St. Louis Zoo, was nipped by a penguin and met a tiger named Callista – just like his wife, he joked to reporters.)

"I'd love to have his endorsement but he has to do what he thinks is right for his family and he has to do what … will help pay off his campaign debt,” Gingrich said. “I am not going to put any pressure on Rick but obviously I'd love to have his endorsement."

After Santorum’s exit from the GOP race, many have called on Gingrich to withdraw as well. But Gingrich says he is staying in for the Americans he meets at events who encourage him to continue running.

“I want you to know I am the last conservative standing and I am still standing and I am running hard,” Gingrich said at a Tea Party rally here. He said that remaining in the race and competing with front-runner Mitt Romney helps the Republican Party.

“I think it helps the party because it gives us the chance to outline very big solutions and to build clarity towards the fall campaign,” he said. “I think ultimately we are all going to be on the same team.”

While Gingrich calls himself “the last conservative standing,” which he advertises on his website with the slogan, he admitted Romney also is a conservative.

“Compared to Barack Obama, Romney’s a conservative,” he said. “Let’s be clear: There are no liberals in the Republican party.”

Can you all say President Romney? Oh, I'm sure it will take a little practice for most of you. But you really should get used to it. Just remind yourselves that a significant percentage of those who will vote the same way you are currently planning, have never worked a day in their lives, including many who have "doubled down" by refusing to raise their children to work either. Those "children" will be the dirty little OWS crews out manning the barricades in the streets and parks of our cities this summer (again), fouling their tents and the streets, ruining the small businesses in the area of their "protests," and demanding more and more from you and me, in exchange for less and less from them!

I think we all are ready for a big change.....vote for Paul....it can't get any worse. I would like for us as individuals to have a vote.....NOT A VOTE FROM ELECTORAL VOTES BUT FROM THE TRUE PUBLICS OPINION

Yeah, he would be a big change . We can not live with policy that has been changed. We would have to shut ever thing down. The country or the world would not stand for it. President Nixon was allowed to change the monetary policy and that was almost 40 years ago.

I thought you actually had to be in the race to be considered an underdog. Newt has never been a serious contender anywhere aside from the backward "Christian" morons in South Carolina who abandoned their closely held bible belt, "family values" just so they could get rid of a black president or not cast their vote for a Mormon.

Newt is still in the race for two reasons only. 1. Matching campaign funds and 2. Free publicity for his next book.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Shame on you South Carolina. Prejudice is still prejudice no matter how well disguised. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Denverdude--see, I agree with your statements re: Gingrich, but I have a real problem with you jumping on the bandwagon to "assume" that everyone who doesn't want Obama to get another term to feel that way BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.

Sorry, I VOTED for Obama last time out, have been "reasonably" satisfied with his status as 'figurehead-in-chief' (NOT so pleased about the last two presidents in that role--and note--despite Clinton's claiming to be the 'first black president', both of THEM were/are white), BUT I have been VERY disappointed with his 'leadership' on the issues the DEMS SHOULD be strong on.

I could NOT in conscience, have voted for Santorum or GingNUTS, but since Obama does NOT seem to want to or be able to do much if anything (other than hollow 'promises' in the election campaign, AGAIN) to protect a woman's rights to control ALL aspects of her own body, to provide EQUAL rights for Gays, or to protect ALL Americans against the onslaught of illegal immigrants, and the devastating effect that has had on our economy, then I MAY have to bite the bullet and vote for the Mittster.

At least he has a CLUE about economics.

Gingrich is just proving what many of us -- conservatives or liberals -- knew or suspected about him long ago.

As for your list of issues, how about the legalization of drugs, MOmaid? Obama has just cheerfully said that he would welcome a "debate" about legalizing hard drugs.

I'll bet he would! He would agree to just about anything to get peoples' minds off the current state of the economy, and his dismal performance in having failed to encourage any kind of meaningful recovery.

His statist policies, including his record back-breaking deficits, suggest that he actually wants to addle any form of free economy for the long term. Either that, or he just has no common sense.

            Hey, wait . . . maybe it's both!

Wow this is like Dracula asking the Mummy for an endorsement........Here's just a little more Corporate Mainstream Media (MSM) Nonsense generating even more "Smoke & Mirrors.

When was the last time they "printed" any real news about this "election"? Can you any of you remember?

Obama paid taxes, Romney asked for an extension, Gingrich is broke and Sanatorium dropped out.....

Notice any "Real" choice or difference here folks? So what makes any of you think electing these same fools from the same Corporate One Party System that has destroyed America over the last 50 years is going to make life better for you, me or anybody else beside their own Corporate "Masters"?

No More Corporate Money... No More Corporate Support... No More Corporate Control....and then maybe Washington DC can get back to the "People's Business"!

                          Nothing like buying votes.

And kudos to the penguin - what a judge of character.

You people who think that Ron Paul is something unique or new are neophytes to politics. This are the policies of the Libertarians who believe all government is bad government. This is the same idiocy that ignores a multi-national world with international marketplaces and international weapons of mass destruction, though not in Iraq it seems, This crazy pacifism where we walk off the international relations stage will have us speaking Chinese in 2 generations. The government does some things well, national defense, schools, social security, medicare, laws that protect children, and the disabled to name a few. This cut every government program idea is only palatable in a recession.

That's b/c the majority of Romney's voters are OLD PEOPLE. old people don't attend concert like conventions by the thousands. They do however, vote the most of any demographic. That's why Paul doesn't have a chance but somehow Romney does.
