After being bit by a penguin, Gingrich says he's the underdog

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The day after Newt Gingrich was bit by a penguin at a zoo, he acknowledged he is “the underdog” and said his campaign began renting their donor list because they needed money.

"Money -- it is a very common reason why people rent things out,” Gingrich said standing inside the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C. “We wanted the money.”

Being roughly $4.5 million in debt has caused the Gingrich campaign to rent out their list of donors, POLITICO reported Friday.

Campaign debt, Gingrich said Saturday afternoon, could factor into who former presidential candidate Rick Santorum may endorse.

Following a tour of the NASCAR museum, Gingrich said he spoke with Santorum in St. Louis, Mo. but only briefly. (This was the same day the Speaker visited the St. Louis Zoo, was nipped by a penguin and met a tiger named Callista – just like his wife, he joked to reporters.)

"I'd love to have his endorsement but he has to do what he thinks is right for his family and he has to do what … will help pay off his campaign debt,” Gingrich said. “I am not going to put any pressure on Rick but obviously I'd love to have his endorsement."

After Santorum’s exit from the GOP race, many have called on Gingrich to withdraw as well. But Gingrich says he is staying in for the Americans he meets at events who encourage him to continue running.

“I want you to know I am the last conservative standing and I am still standing and I am running hard,” Gingrich said at a Tea Party rally here. He said that remaining in the race and competing with front-runner Mitt Romney helps the Republican Party.

“I think it helps the party because it gives us the chance to outline very big solutions and to build clarity towards the fall campaign,” he said. “I think ultimately we are all going to be on the same team.”

While Gingrich calls himself “the last conservative standing,” which he advertises on his website with the slogan, he admitted Romney also is a conservative.

“Compared to Barack Obama, Romney’s a conservative,” he said. “Let’s be clear: There are no liberals in the Republican party.”

I put together a comprehensive statistical analysis of all the remaining delegates following the Santorum dropout. The results?

At the first vote of the RNC, Romney has 978 delegates, Gingrich has 230, Santorum has 270, and Paul has 657. The second vote is anyone's guess.

These figures are based on current polling statistics and a few reasonable assumptions about loss of interest among Romney supporters and protest voting by erstwhile Santorum supporters.

Nobody but Paul 2012!

We know it wasn't a Pittsburgh Penguin----sadly they have blown 3-0 leads over the Flyers twice and now trail 0-2 in the NHL playoffs!

I like Newt's comment about Rick getting his campaign debt paid off---how would you like to be a Romney donor and find out your money went to pay off his opponents' campaign debts?

Derek:

It is also reasonable to assume that there will be a loss of interest among Gingrich, Paul and Santorum supporters since everybody (with the possible exception of you) knows that this race is already over. It would be a safe bet that Romney wraps up the nomination officially by the end of May. Oh, and I almost forgot. As for Gingrich... what an idiot.

@Derek, At present, Romney has 666 delegates (nice number, eh?), or 59% of the committed delegates. Paul has 52 delegates, or 5%. You are suggesting that Paul will beat Romney 2:1 from now on, when he has been beaten 12:1 to this point?

“Compared to Barack Obama, Romney’s a conservative,” he said. “Let’s be clear: There are no liberals in the Republican party.” There are rigid purity tests now to prevent that. Look, I know I said Romney is a moderate, but because the Party has gone so far to the Right, Romney is really a liberal. Oh damn, I just slipped and spoke the truth again.

Hmm, if Santorum endorses Gingrich, and then Gingrich endorses Romney to get his campaign debt paid off, is that a Santorum endorsement of Romney once removed?

Hmmm... So, Newton was nipped by a penguin! That penguin probably recognized something that is fishy. Further proof that Newton needs to return to the mossy rocks and shade, and be quiet.

The Republican Party is directly responsible for President Obama being in office - by not providing a viable candidate to oppose him. IF the GOP decides to anoint Willard Romney, the outcome will be exactly the same, and it will mean four more years of Obama. I really fear what would happen if that were to take place. (Due to the likelihood of 4 or 5 SCOTUS judicial appointments within the next four years.)

Recently, there was a published comment about a poll that indicated 52% of voters do not like any of the Republican candidates, and, 53% of those voters said they would favor President Obama over anyone in the present GOP gaggle of presidential wannabes.

Willard Romney, religious views aside, has not had any meaningful contact with average every day people. (Latest news concerns Willard wanting to install an elevator for his cars…) Rick Santorum was far too draconian, vindictive, and sanctimonious. Newton Gingrich does not pass the ethics or morals test. Ronald Paul is not age appropriate. Add to that, all of them have the charisma of a bag of steer manure.

The Republican Party needs drop affiliation with the conservative Christians, and get serious about finding better qualified candidates.

After being bit by a penguin, Gingrich says he's the underdog

hmmm, is he saying that the penguin was on top. /lol

I wonder why was Gingrich even climbing over the fence to pet a penguin. Did he have something else on his mind and it didn't turn out the way he had hoped.

Maybe he's looking for a way to raise money, and now he's going to sue the Zoo, then the penguin.

My prediction is that he'll never come in better than 2nd, and will not be the Republican nominee. Too bad, it would be great fun to see him and the Teapublicans crash and burn in November.

To address the elephant in the room... Gingrich is $4.5 million dollars in DEBT, over four months of campaigning, and he's running for the nomination of the party that claims to be fiscally conservative?

Anyone else see what's wrong with that picture?

The Greedy Obstructionist Party will spend whatever it wants to get what it wants, and debt be damned, and then they'll make the poor and middle class pay for it by dropping tax rates for the wealthy.

If that isn't a microcosm of what the RepubliCON party will do if they were to win in November, I don't know what is.

A "liberal conservative" is still more right-guided than a "conservative liberal". Romney is NOT as scary as what Obama has already done (and many things Obama has been a flip-flopper on, too, since in office)...

Poor Gingrich. The ONLY thing going for him is a big mouth and a sharp tongue that is always fantastic to hear in debates. But other than that, how stupid are you, man? Millions of dollars in debt, coming in 3rd or 4th in all these primaries, and you still can't see the writing on the wall?

    #1.39 - Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:15 AM EDT

And did you notice that the articles that you can't comment on are those that don't support the MSNBC agenda? For example, I would have liked to have commented on the TARP article which clearly refutes the left-wing propaganda regarding the role of banks as not only the cause but direct beneficiaries of the housing meltdown. The left has effectively redirected the public's attention from the root cause of the problem which was the Community Reinvestment Act, a piece of legislation that forced the banks to assume the high-risk housing loans in the first place.

You're not confused, there is an official report. If I had to guess, I'd say that the "anonymous senior Treasury official" is none other than Timothy Geithner. Given the depth of his involvement in TARP, he would want to remain behind the scenes. He wouldn't want the report to appear biased, which it probably is.

It is time for you to get him off the computer. He is confusing Palin for someone who is intelligent. The truth is is that Palin has a publicist and an agent who make a mint every time she says something stupid, which, by even the most conservative accounting, makes these people multi-millionaires in their own right.

Palin is a gold mine to these people every time they trot her out to auditoriums full of drooling right wing morons that feed on the red meat she tosses at the dupes at her "fleece the idiots" rallies.

She tries to come off as grass roots while traveling in a Gulfstream jet, sipping mimosas and flipping the bird at the knuckleheads out the plane window. What a laugh.

The phrase "four-letter word" is a figure of speech used as a euphemism for "curse word" or "swear word". There's nothing faulty about Secretary Clinton's phrasing. Nice try though.

You do know that Ron Paul signed the person-hood pledge that vows to overturn Roe v Wade and make many forms of contraception illegal? That seems a strange pledge for someone who claims to believe in American individual rights and then goes against himself by pledging to take rights away from women. I guess he for your individual rights only if you are a man?

I haven't checked but my guess is that he voted for the Ryan Budget to end medicare and food for the poor children and any shred of safety net we might have left.

Ron Paul would be good for America only if you dream of America becoming a third world country where only the rich have clean food and water. Where only the rich get a good education. Where only the rich have good health care. The rich get bailed out when they crash the country, the poor get blamed and get nothing.

He'd take us back to the 1700's, and I don't say this lighty, my background is the economy. And where do you come up with Taxation without representation? We elect congress to represent us, hence, representation. About the only thing I agree with Paul is his stance on the war, but even he takes it to such an extreme, he's to scary to comtemplate.

I've listened to him, he's much about nothing....he's been a bad congressman, he'd make one of the worst presidents in history. You realize he couldn't get any of his policies enacted, you know that don't you....none....hasn't had a bill he's authored ever get through, and he's never offered one.

Ted - Name his moral failings? I'm interested... not sell me a bridge you don't have, but a specific moral failing, like Newt's affairs, Cains transgressions...name them....

Maybe how he's a family man, maybe that is his moral failings.

Maybe his Christian upbringing, and how he lives what he believes in.....

            Name them Ted...

DON his moral failings are to long to list and here some of them

This was written by Sherry Hackett, Buddy Hackett’s widow……..

            “WE NOTICED”

            President Obama:

Today I read of your administrations’ plan to re-define September 11 as a National Service Day. Sir, it’s time we had a talk………

During your campaign, Americans watched as you made mockery of our tradition of standing and crossing your heart when the Pledge of Allegiance was spoken. You, out of four ...people on the stage, were the only one not honoring our tradition.

            YES, “We noticed.”

During one of your many speeches, Americans heard you say that you intended to visit all 57 states.
We all know that Islam, not America has 57 states.

            YES, “We noticed.”

When President Bush leaned over at Ground Zero and gently placed a flower on the memorial, while you nonchalantly tossed your flower onto the pile without leaning over.

            YES, “We noticed.”

Every time you apologized to other countries for America’s position on an issue we have wondered why you don’t share our pride in this great country. When you have heard foreign leaders berate our country and our beliefs, you have not defended us. In fact, you insulted the British Crown beyond belief.

            YES, “We noticed.”

When your pastor of 20 years, “God-damned America ” and said that 9/11 was ” America ‘s chickens coming home to roost” and you denied having heard recriminations of that nature, we wondered how that could be. You later disassociated yourself from that church and Pastor Wright because it was politically expedient to do so.

            YES, “We noticed.”

When you announced that you would transform America , we wondered why. With all her faults, America is the greatest country on earth. Sir, KEEP THIS IN MIND, “if not for America and the people who built her, you wouldn’t be sitting in the White House now.” Prior to your election to the highest office in this Country, you were a senator from Illinois and from what we can glean from the records available, not a very remarkable one.

            YES, “We noticed.”

All through your campaign and even now, you have surrounded yourself with individuals who are basically unqualified for the positions for which you appointed them. Worse than that, the majority of them are people who, like you, bear no special allegiance, respect, or affection for this country and her traditions.

            YES, “We noticed.”

You are 9 months into your term and eve ry morning millions of Americans wake up to a new horror heaped on us by you. You seek to saddle working Americans with a health care- insurance reform package that, along with cap and trade, will bankrupt this nation.

            YES, “We noticed.”

We seek, by protesting, to let our representatives know that we are not in favor of these crippling expenditures and we are labeled “un-American”,”racist”, “mob”. We wonder how we are supposed to let you know how frustrated we are. You have attempted to make our protests seem isolated and insignificant. Until your appointment, Americans had the right to speak out.

            YES, “We noticed.”

On September 11, 2001 there were no Republicans or Democrats, only Americans. And we all grieved together and helped each other in whatever way we could. The attack on 9/11 was carried out because we are Americans.

            And YES, “We noticed.”

There were many of us who prayed that as a black president you could help unite this nation. In six months you have done more to destroy this nation than the attack on 9/11.

            You have failed us.

            YES, “We noticed.”

September 11 is a day of remembrance for all Americans. You propose to make 9/11 a “National Service Day”. While we know that you don’t share our reverence for 9/11, we pray that history will report your proposal as what it is…a disgrace.

            YES, “We noticed.”

You have made a mockery of our Constitution and the office that you hold. You have embarrassed and slighted us in foreign visits and policy.

            YES, “We noticed..”

We have noticed all these things. We will deal with you. When Americans come together again, it will be to remove you from office.

            Take notice.

Ted - Buddy Hackett's widow is your proof. All this is total BS, but let's take the first two

During your campaign, Americans watched as you made mockery of our tradition of standing and crossing your heart when the Pledge of Allegiance was spoken. You, out of four ...people on the stage, were the only one not honoring our tradition.

So, this is a moral failing, standing in silence while the Pledge of Allegiance was spoken. His moral failing is not placing his hand over his heart? Thats one of his moral failings? You've got to be kidding me. Newt Gingrich has two affairs, and Obama didn't place his hand over his heart while the Pledge of Allegiance was spoken. I don't don't place my hand over my heart either, I stand silently and look at the flag. I had no idea, that act was a moral failing on my part.

During one of your many speeches, Americans heard you say that you intended to visit all 57 states.
We all know that Islam, not America has 57 states.

Ted, do we need to even address this one. Exactly which 57 states are Muslim? And we all know that, well if we do Ted, name them. Total BS...

I said provide proof of moral failings, not dribble...and don't quote Daffy Duck while doing it, Buddy Hackett's widow... I'm mean seriously....

            How about the next one.

When President Bush leaned over at Ground Zero and gently placed a flower on the memorial, while you nonchalantly tossed your flower onto the pile without leaning over.

I didn't observe this or remember how he tossed a flower, but you want me to believe his moral failing is not leaning over? I mean seriously, you've got something better than this.

This whole article is BS wrapped in BS. You should be ashamed of yourself for distributing it.

I want just one, real moral failing on President Obama's behalf, just one real, logical moral failing. And I'll tell you, you don't have one.... he didn't bend over when he tossed the flower on the memorial.. Come on Ted..

Uh, ted patrick, this was not written by Sherry Hackett. She died in 2007. It is also against the Newsvine code of honor to post viral emails and to copy and paste articles without block quoting or providing a proper link or attribution. You're beginning to look like a comment spammer-another COH violation. Oh, and Sherry Hackett was a Democrat. ;-

            Ted:

            "I noticed":

Your post is so ridiculous as to be unworthy of serious ridicule.

            "I noticed":

You're not bringing anything significant to the posts here.

            "I noticed":

That the right wing engages in racism so casually, you don't even recognize it anymore. "Barack the Magic Negro" ring any bells?

            "I noticed":

You sure are against things, but have no positive policies to move the country forward.

            "I noticed":

When in the heck did Buddy Hackett's widow become the arbiter of anything, except how much she enabled her husband's alcoholism?

            "I noticed":

The quality of your post is one of the stupidest chain mail affairs since, I don't know, maybe, you can be a Nigerian prince for only $10,000.

That's what "I noticed" about this very, very lame post.

            Did I mention lame?

            Ted Henry-

It's a case of mis attribution

            http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/wenoticed.asp

The woman who did write it does not seem all that flustered by the mix up.

And some of you people? Need to get lives. Whether it was written by the widow of a comedian, or some one else, it represents the observations and feelings of someone not a member of the cult of Obama.

It's a lot more cogent and coherent than most of your rants about republicans.

Now is the time to unite. Mr. Gringrih seems to have the biggest self serving ego I have ever. He claims he wants to get his conservative message out; if he really did he would get out and help get evangelicals to unite behind Mitt Romney. If these people would just listen to what Mitt says, instead of acting so high and mighty, they would see stands for the constitution, the bill of rights, pro-life, family, freedom, the second amendment and other conservative values just like they do. We have to have a solid united front to get the white house back and the senate. Please Mr. Gingrich stop this in fighting, it only serves the other side.

Please help us find where abortion is banned in the constitution. The Supreme Court could not find it.

Personally I stand for the constitution, the bill of rights, family, personal freedom, fiscal responsibility and fair taxation. I stand for elected representatives who serve their constituents, not a lobbyist with a BS pledge to do what he wants them to do regardless of the rational fiscal needs of the US economy.

Nope, Mitts does not reflect my values, and I don't think I am some kind of liberal fruitcake.

You say you want to promote conservative values, than help unite the evangelicals see that Mitt Romney stands for the constitution, the bill of rights, pro-life, family, the second amendment, and other conservative causes they believe in. It will take a united front to get the white house back and right now you and Rick can really do a lot to bring this about. This country stands for freedom. Not government bondage, which is where we are headed now; of we do not get this Obama out with this election.

What should we give Mitt Romney on the sixth anniversary of the individual mandate in the healthcare program he helped design and sign into law in MA? Should we give him the Presidency because he campaigns against "Obamacare, " which was based on "Romneycare?" What would be the point of changing Presidents? There is no conservative running for President, just Romney and Obama.

PS President Obama also believes in the 2nd amendment. .

Grow up on the woman thing. Get over yourself. Stupid people come in all shapes and sizes. And genders. Who know, you might be stupid as well. I'm not going to base an opinion on a couple of dumb statements on a blog....

I really, really miss Palin and Bachmann.

I never had more Laughs in my life!

Romney is just a boring stuffed shirt left of center Mormon.

Speaking of Mormons, every time they come knocking on my door on early Sunday Mornings, I tell them I am a non practicing Catholic and that my Hamster is having a litter right now and then I direct them over to my Neighbors. I don't tell them that they are Jehovah Witnesses with Serious Attitudes...

Ron Paul supports taking rights away from women. He thinks that women should be second class citizens with men in charge of her reproductive rights like a slave.

Yes Ron Paul also signed the person-hood pledge the republicans are pushing this year. In the republican scenario the egg has more rights that the mother. Of course a miscarriage is a murder investigation because a person not an egg just died.

Unlike the stand your ground laws where all killings don't lead to a murder investigation. I guess I don't understand the desperation to have all eggs born just to be denied even food for the hungry children.

Just how does forcing me to carry a child beget by rape or any other way going to get you to heaven? If God gave us free will, why are you trying to take mine away.

Why do you care about the unborn and don't care the second they are born? How does it switch in your brain that something that is so valuable and so precious is suddenly worthless the moment it is born? Then just like in the Ryan budget you feel good about letting that child starve without food just so you can give more tax cuts to Romney and his rich friends.

Then you say I am for Ron Paul and he is for freedom, except that he is not or he would not have ever signed the person-hood pledge.

                    VOTE FOR WOMEN'S FREEDOM..VOTE A SEA OF BLUE FOR CONGRESS..VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN 2012

Americans First --- even if your hyperboles like "Ron Paul supports taking rights away from women." were true...

You say you support Obama but that would me you are looking past his signing of NDAA which includes indefinite detention of American citizens.

How about his failure to follow through on closing of Guantanamo?

How about his authorization to kill an American citizen abroad if they are deemed "terrorists" (without any kind of trial mind you)?

How about his failure to follow through on ending DEA drug raids on medical marijuana dispensaries in CA?

How can you put a higher priority on abortion rights but not rights of american citizens?

I actually support Pro-Choice, but if you seriously think that is the biggest issue in the US today, so much so that your presidential choice is based solely on support of abortion, I am worried.

Wow, this mans ego has no bounds does it? If anyone has reach a point where it's time to say "goodbye" Gingrich has reached his long ago. Even Santorum who was leagues ahead of Gingrich has left the race knowing the writing is on the wall. Gingrich is nothing more than an egotistical idiot who doesn't know when to leave.

Mr. Gingrich is a career Sleaze who will do anything for money, and money is why he wants to be President. For this egomaniac to try currying sympathy for his loser status is such a joke. He is so in love with himself, he can't get even a rudimentary grasp on reality.

Newtie, in what meaningful way is your candidacy still standing? Obstinacy and ego are not synonyms for viability. The guy sounds like Monty Python's Black Knight, "Only a flesh wound!" Monty Python is funny; Gincrich is increasingly sad and delusional.
