Romney sticks to broad attack on Obama in NRA speech

ST. LOUIS -- Mitt Romney delivered a speech on Friday broadly decrying President Obama's "assault" on basic freedoms -- especially gun rights -- in a bid to court the National Rifle Association (NRA) and its 4 million or so members nationwide.

Romney largely avoided wading into thorny issues of gun control and the Second Amendment, issues which have dogged his past campaigns, and stuck to broader criticism of the president before this largely conservative audience.

Michael Conroy / AP

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks April 13, 2012, at the National Rifle Association convention in St. Louis, Mo.

"President Obama is moving us away from our founders vision," Romney told several thousand members of the NRA gathered here today. "Instead of limited government he is leading us toward limited freedom and limited opportunity."

Romney's speech today, in which he mentioned the word "gun" only once, focused largely on broad themes of freedoms, and, his advisers said, was designed to be one of several speeches which would "crystallize" the choice for voters between the presumptive GOP nominee and Obama.

To that end, Romney further pressed his vision of the fall election as a defining choice between two different destinies, and accused the Obama administration of curtailing Americans' personal, religious and economic freedoms. He referred to the NRA as a single-issue group -- that issue being freedom.

Eighteen minutes into his speech, Romney pivoted to Second Amendment issues, pledging to stand up for the rights of hunters, sportsman and other gun owners, and accusing the president of failing to do so.

"We need a President who will stand up for the rights of hunters, sportsmen, and those seeking to protect their homes and their families. President Obama has not; I will," he said.

"If we are going to safeguard our Second Amendment, it is time to elect a president who will defend the rights President Obama ignores or minimizes," Romney added. "And I will protect the Second Amendment rights of the American people."

Democrats shot back at Romney before his speech was even delivered.

“The president's record makes clear the he supports and respects the second amendment, and we'll fight back against any attempts to mislead voters. Mitt Romney is going to have difficulty explaining why he quadrupled fees on gun owners in Massachusetts then lied about being a lifelong hunter in an act of shameless pandering," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said in a statement this morning. "That varmint won't hunt.”

Romney's history with second amendment and gun-ownership issues is a colorful one, from saying "I don't line up with the NRA," during his 1994 senate campaign, to being forced to backtrack on his skill as a hunter in 2008, ultimately admitting he only shot "small varmints." This campaign cycle, Romney has laughed about his lack of skill as a hunter, including with comedian Jeff Foxworthy in Alabama, whom he joked could help him figure out which end of the rifle to point.

The Republican frontrunner's speech also came, though, at one of the biggest recent flashpoints for gun rights in recent memory. The Trayvon Martin shooting in Florida has sparked nationwide coverage of "stand your ground" laws -- the self-defense law under which George Zimmerman, the man charged with second degree murder in Martin's death, is mounting his criminal defense.

Romney didn't address those laws in his speech, though his campaign said in a briefing with reporters on Friday morning that the former Massachusetts governor would defer to states to determine their own laws on that matter.

For Romney, winning over the NRA's roughly 4 million members nationwide will be a crucial part of rallying the party's base for November's elections. Conversations with NRA members here suggested he has a tough -- though certainly not insurmountable -- road ahead of him.

Mary Brucker, a retired IRS worker and proud hunter of moose who showed off photos of a successful hunt this summer in Alberta, Canada, was "torn" on Romney as an advocate for gun-owners' issues, saying she was considering not voting this fall.

"He's not really committed to our ideals and foundations," Brucker, who had also supported Santorum, said with a sigh.

Bob and Bonnie Merrill, auto shop owners from Maine, told NBC before Romney's speech they worried he was "wishy-washy" on the second amendment, but that while they had originally hoped to support Rick Santorum, they would "absolutely" back Romney against President Obama.

"I think he's better than Obama," Mrs. Merrill laughed when asked her feelings about Governor Romney's positions on gun issues.

"I think anybody is better than Obama when it comes to gun issues," her husband interjected.

But gun issues have largely fallen to the backburner in this election cycle. In a bow toward the dominant issue this week -- the women vote -- Romney's wife, Ann, offered a brief introduction of her husband.

"Let me give a shout out to all moms that are working, and by the way all dads that are working. We love all of you," she said, following a few day's worth of coverage of Mrs. Romney's decision to be a homemaker when her children were younger.

And Mitt Romney said of the issue in his introduction of Ann: "I happen to believe that all moms are working moms, and if you have five sons, your work is never over."

As Governor of Massachusetts he supported the banning of assault weapons and supported the requirement for background checks – all laws the NRA was against. He claimed he owned a gun when he did not. He claimed he was a hunter but his hunting was limited to 2 times that he hunted rodents with a borrowed 22. Hunters do not consider that as qualifying as a hunter.

He told the NRA he supported them and the second amendment but he did not talk about any gun issues, not even his opinion on the Stand Your Ground law that dominates current events.

[Eighteen minutes into his speech, Romney pivoted to Second Amendment issues, pledging to stand up for the rights of hunters, sportsman and other gun owners, and accusing the president of failing to do so.] The only bill that our President signed into law that had anything to do with gun rights was to expand them.

Obama has not done anything to anger Obama, yet they automatically attack him because of his party and a few other intangibles. On Obama's watch, you are now allowed to bring your gun to national parks. Why would you need one? It's anyone's guess. Watch out for bears filching picnic baskets and campers in hoodies!

We can soon expect to see Mitt in an ad wearing camoflage and shooting some quail pegged onto the ground while Dick smiles on approvingly.

Dennis, perfect description of Mittens and I wrote a long piece below which you summed up in Romney=Pander & Gutless.

One of many things I liked about then Candidate Obama was he didn't put on a hunter's vest and hit the fields to shoot "varmints"; he never pandered to the NRA, never suggested he was a hunter or owned guns.

Mitt doesn't seem to understand what has happened with gun laws during the Obama administration. Obama has expanded gun rights and Mitt is somehow against that? Oh my - he is SEVERELY challenged, isn't he? But, he'll go back and ask Ann if he said the right things. Will the NRA anoint him as their sacred candidate????

On a serious note it is SO frightening that this imbecile is the BEST the GOP has!

Romney should know that this administration isn't pushing any sort of gun control, in Mexico anyway. The Obama adminstration needs to answer for the death of a border patrol agent, and probably many more deaths with the guns that were supplied. Mitt Romney and the NRA would NEVER permit any such activity.

This next election will be wondeful. The shellacking will get completed.

Here is the thing... Every 4 years we vote out one idiot, and vote in a new one... None are better than the rest. Its all based on how crappy they are. A lot of people vote party line;, my X wives family is a prime example; they vote democrat, no matter what. If it was Hitller, today? They would vote for him... Its sad. Every president we have had, has had issues.... Clinton banged Monica... Bush did drugs.. Its the way it goes. But ya wanna know the real bottom line?

If you do not support the president of the states.... You are no patriot. Good or bad.. we have to support our President... We have to... remember that statment? United we stand, divided we fall... Support our president.....Obama, Bush, Clinton, whatever.... Lets be a nation....

I enjoy sport target shooting and own a few .22 caliber pistols for that purpose. Immediately after the election in 2008, and for at least a year after it was almost impossible to find rounds, even the ubiquitous .22LR. Stocks of guns and ammunition in shops I visited were largely depleted. In answer to my queries I found the manufacturers were still pumping out guns and ammo at full capacity, but these item were selling faster than the stocks could be replenished.

Why?

"Obama's gonna take our guns. Obama's gonna make it illegal to sell guns." And et cetera ad nauseum.

The first time I heard this I thought it was a joke, but quickly found out there was no humor in the fact people were hoarding guns and ammunition in fear and sincere belief that the President was actually going to "take our guns."

An LA Times article this morning reported the NRA does not care much for Mr. Romney (does anyone?) but is backing him fully.

The panic has subsided, Mr. Obama did not take our guns. Rounds are now readily available and I can resume happily poking holes in the center of targets. "I think anybody is better than Obama when it comes to gun issues," her husband interjected. What does that mean?

I realize the NRA exists as a lobbying organization with a very specific agenda, I believe their agenda is often too extreme for me and consequently even though I am a shooter I will not join them. Even though I am not aware of the NRA coming out and blatantly stating "Obama wants to take our guns" they certainly do not make the effort to dispel that notion within their membership. Quite obviously Mr. Romney is playing this factor.

Hi Dennis,

I agree that congress is not going to take up any gun laws, now or in the immediate future. I believe gun laws should be a state rights issue. Federal law, one size fits all, will not work and shouldn't even be considered. Example gun laws in western states like Montana, Wyoming, Idaho etc., should and would be greatly different than those in states with larger city populations like CA, NY, PA, Ill, Ohio. I support the right to keep and bears arms but do not agree with the NRA about assault rifles, machine guns, & military style weapons.

One concern with a lot of NRA members and others like me (non members of NRA but gun owners), is once you start banning it never seems to stop, the anti gun people just want to keep pushing the envelope until all weapons are banned.

Mark and Others,

I too own quite a few guns. Pistols, rifles, and shotguns. I enjoy plinking and shooting clay pigeons at our local range. I hunt turkey and deer, although usually those hunts end up being a nice walk in the woods carrying a gun.

When I started this hobby, I ended up on the NRA mailing list. I became a member for a year. I was shocked at the lack of any useful information on owning a rifle in this nation. Instead, I was blasted with anti-government, anti-Obama propaganda. Constantly. I got the "Rifleman" I think the NRA magazine was called. Its editorial page was always bashing liberals and specifically the President. I never renewed my subscription, even though they tempted me with gifts ranging from a silver "NRA" bullet, and a range bag.

This president, by letting loaded firearms into National Forests, has done more for gun owners than anything King George the Retard ever did. Quick-Draw Dick probably did more harm for gun-owners than any VP in history.

Real Americans can see through the hyperbole of the Right and will re-elect BHO for another term.

@arazonatime,

Way to represent your state as a bunch of ignorant, dirty-minded children. BTW, you don't use an apostrophe to create a plural. Sorry, you probably didn't get that: Don't use one of those little marky thingies between the k and the s in dicks. That's only if you are putting together two words (called a contraction, can you say contraction? Good boy), or to show that the item is owned by someone (called possessive), and if you own a dick, congratulations. If you own or have access to many dicks, well... that says a lot about you and your repressed state.

If the American people are lazy enough to fall for another empty suit, we deserve what we get.

Romney once again opens his mouth and out comes a torrent of lies. It's really sad how the media parrots this guys B.S.

I was just reading another article about how the TARP loans will all be paid back with a profit to the taxpayers. Of course you won't ever hear Willard mention that will you.

When Bush and Paulson handed 700 billion dollars to Wall Street it was done without strings or even an audit. When Obama took office he appointed Elizabeth Warren to find out were the money went. She tracked down all the money and that is the reason the loans will be paid back with interest to the U.S treasury. The TARP story shows the true contrast between Republicans and Democrats. Had the Republicans won the presidency in 2008 that 700 billion dollars would have just vanished never to be seen again.

Over the passed 40 some years the Republican Party has morphed into a criminal organization with only one purpose and that is to steal as much as possible from the American people. The public is beginning to wake up to this fact and November is going to be pay back time.

If you look at the record of each administration on what they have done about access to guns, you would be convinced that Obama is for the NRA, and Romney is against it. Romney supported restricting assault weapons. President Obama authorized the carrying of guns in our national parks, how many millions of acres is that ?

And don't forget, the Obama administration was responsible for getting thousands of guns and rifles into the hands of many hispanics... but the Dems probably don't want to mention that.

Hmm, scratching head, wasn't/isn't President Obama the very first President to sign into law the expansion of gun rights for you guys by allowing the carrying of your weapons in National Parks for the first time, ever? Even the NRAs chosen child Bush/Cheney didn't get that one done.

But yeah, the 2nd amendment applies to everyone. Well unless everyone is in a Militia, then yeah, you can have that gun!.. Obama isn't taking your guns away, so calm down.

Again the sky is falling, the sky is Fn falling, scream the GOP. 2 choices in November 2012. Elect the GOP, which has proven its stance is Anti-America, pro-world occupation. Or the Dems who are anti-war and Pro-America(n)? The GOP aka Goofy Old People Party, want to rule America with a bible in 1 hand and a automatic weapon in the other. Or the Dems, who are Liberal and we all know that being Liberal means you are more open-minded, and open to allowing freedom of religon. Unlike the GOP and Santorum who want to rule America with Judea-Christian Sharia Law.

Elect the GOP in 2012 and we'll get war, occupation (home and abroad) and very high gas prices. You'll see 20% unemployment and crime rampant under the nex regime of the GOP and its hostile take-over of America and the World

"President Obama is moving us away from our founders vision," Romney told several thousand members of the NRA gathered here today. "Instead of limited government he is leading us toward limited freedom and limited opportunity."

So hold on a second; since when is Obama taking away our freedoms. I'll admit that the NDAA and the Patriot Act were poor decisions, but when else??? He's done practically nothing for restricting gun laws, and his individual mandate is a practical compromise (although I wish there was a public option involved). AS for economic freedom, I personally say that Obama hasn't done enough to regulate the economy, mostly the financial and housing markets. Dodd-Frank was good, but I would have rather put Glass Steagall back. Housing, well, it's improving. But he still could do more. I think that we gave too much freedom to the corporations over the past 30 years, and now its time to tighten the rope. Overturn Citizens United; punish the people who caused the recession, and help homeowners struggling to stay in their homes.

And this is from the guy who wants to defund Planned Parenthood (which helps low-income women) and overturn Roe v Wade. What a hypocrite...

sfcret,

One concern with a lot of NRA members and others like me (non members of NRA but gun owners), is once you start banning it never seems to stop, the anti gun people just want to keep pushing the envelope until all weapons are banned.

I can understand that concern but that is the same logic the extreme anti-gay marriage crowd uses when it states legalizing gay marriage will lead to people marrying their pets. Somewhere reason and balance must win out. Prohibiting exotic weapons does not interfere in any way with the use and enjoyment of sporting and hunting arms and I have to believe reasonable legislators realize this.

I fully support legal carriage of firearms but it sounds like guns are the least of the problems in the neighborhood to which you refer.

"The political brinksmanship of recent months," the company said, "highlights what we see as America's governance and policymaking becoming less stable, less effective, and less predictable than what we previously believed."

The agency pointed to political reluctance to make cuts to entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security, and Republicans' refusal even to consider increasing revenues by, for instance, ending the Bush tax cuts.

Keep your damn guns...but stop with the ROBOT calls (1-855-232-9534) and the stupid Wayne La Pierrre Whine about the United Nations coming to attack us. That is just crazy nonsense.

    The N R A boo-hooing is pathetic.

They've LOST membership and they are looking for lobbying money.

There is not one FACTUAL statement in their fear-mongering blathering. If you believe their goofy claims, you've been snookered.

All you paranoid, gun-toting, jacked up NRA folks are convinced that someone is going to invade your home.

Exactly WHERE is this rash of home invaders in your neighborhood? Do you have empiracal evidence of rising, out of control crime?

    Your Amendment rights are protected.

The hyperbole and ridiculous marxist, socialist, anti-Obama, Vigil-anti ravings are miserably un-patriotic.

Technically he does have a policy, if by which you mean a plan to cut taxes for the rich and increase taxes for the poor. But he's too scared of the common man to release them openly.

I really am sick of hearing this guy's record in the private sector. He's said that in practically all of his speeches. We don't need another businessman in the White House. We had that during the previous administration.

This might be old by the time this posts, but Just One, you do know there is a difference between raising the debt limit and authorizing the spending, right? Authorizing the spending comes first, paying come second.

Sort of like buying stuff with your credit card. Signing the charge slip is where you've spent the money. Paying the bill the next month is just a formality. If you get in an argument with your wife about which bill to pay, and you're late on one of the bills, the credit card companies ding your credit. It's the argument that got you in trouble, just like your example of raising the debt ceiling.

What's the alternative anyway? Not paying the bills?

Even though I am not aware of the NRA coming out and blatantly stating "Obama wants to take our guns"

This is from the Executive Vice President of the NRA:

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/inside-politics/2012/feb/10/nra-official-obama-wants-outlaw-guns-2nd-term/

Here is a quick exerpt for those that don't click links.

"All that first term, lip service to gun owners is just part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment during his second term," he said.

    And...

"We see the president's strategy crystal clear: Get re-elected and, with no more elections to worry about, get busy dismantling and destroying our firearms' freedom, erase the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights and excise it from the U.S. Constitution."

It's crap like this that turns me off from the NRA. They are just fear mongering for increased gun sales. Guess what? It worked. Most of the top gun manufacturers have stopped taking new orders due to the chicken little reaction to the NRA propaganda.

This is the same crap they pulled before Obama got elected. Except this time, they claim his first term of actually expanding gun rights was just to lull people into thinking he wasn't going to take their guns away in his second term if re elected.

You can't make this crap up.

The 'alternative' is to not waste taxpayer dollars on "Ca$h for Clunker$", give away $$ to corporations and SOLYNDRA (bet you thought we'd forget that one) as well as other total failures of this administration. Obama has spent us to a point that is unacceptable to any responsible tax payer. He had his chance to prove that the United States could spend it's way out of debt and he was plain wrong! "Mittens" is gonna have a field day with this guy.

      #1.60 - Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:52 PM EDT

First, those don't have anything to do with the debt ceiling. Debt ceiling pays for money already spent. Almost not paying the bills is what got us the downgrade.

Cash for clunkers saved a lot of people money, got POS bad gas milage cars off the road (improving pollution and improving fuel efficiency), and helped the US auto industry which at the time was tanking, and now--lo and behold--is doing well now! Failed policy my arse. His policies saved us from what would have been much worse if McCain or any of your fiscal "conservatives" were at the helm. Remember the lessons of Herbert Hoover. Crash of 1929 was not responded to until FDR got in office in 1933. I'm thankful Bush's people and then Obama knew to attack the problem aggressively. All of those entitlements and unemployment were going to get paid somehow, I'm jsut glad we're slowly coming out if it. Again, failure my arse.

Ready to name a failure of any consequence?

Cash for clunkers saved a lot of people money..

      Ca$h for Clunker$...

...saddled up low income folks with the SAME debt they ended up with under Carter's 'homes for everybody' resulting in the housing bust.

...increased the cost of used vehicles available to the low income buyer.

...contributed to the massive historical debt of this administration.

...was only ONE of the many programs that responsible taxpayer money was wasted on.

        #1.64 - Sat Apr 14, 2012 1:10 AM EDT

I guess we define failure differently. There was the "cash" part of the cash for clunkers--so actually everyone who traded in got a bunch of money to put down on that new car, making it more affordable. After the finanacial meltdown, lending rules tightened up a lot, so total deadbeats aren't getting aloan no matter what, and people do still need to have some responsibility. You do believe in that don't you?

If you think Carter (1977-1981) was the source of the 2007(!) housing meltdown, you've been drinking the Fox koolaid. Sort of like the NRA saying Obama is just waiting to be reelected to "end the second amendment" and take away everybody's gun rights. Yeah.....r i g h t.

Justoneguy, CFC did not saddle low income buyers with more debt. At the time you had to have a stellar credit rating and ample income to get a car loan. It did prime the pump, got the auto industry rolling and there has been no looking back. The clunkers were sold for scrap, the program was so successful it was stopped early, it was a bright idea that worked. It had immediate, lasting results.

        The NRA yesterday and today

The NRA was founded to protect the rights of gun owners. Initially their support came mostly from farmers and ranchers that were aligned with the Republican Party thanks to the Republican support of farm and land subsidies.

The NRA worked as lobbyists to support pro-gun legislation and fight anti-gun legislation. As the organization grew both in membership and power it began to provide support to pro-gun legislators to help ensure a pro-gun majority in Congress.

So far so good – it was all about the rights of gun owners and the protection of the 2nd amendment.

But at some point the NRA morphed into a political operative of the Republican Party working to defeat Democrats even ones that were supporters of the NRA and/or their goals. This was clearly evident in 2010 when they withdrew support for current Governor Ted Strickland (D-OH) who had the NRA’s highest rating (A+) and threw their support behind John Kasich with a NRA rating of “B”. That was a pure political move that had nothing to do with the 2nd amendment or gun rights.

The NRA leader, Wayne LaPierre, said that the NRA is prepared to spend $40 million to defeat President Obama. This is not about policy it is about politics. The only gun legislation this President has signed or even considered, in over 3 years, was to expand gun rights by allowing concealed carry in National parks.

While the NRA warns of what a second term President Obama (not restrained by another election) will do to take your guns away, to restrict you 2nd amendment rights and/or place more restrictions on gun/ammo purchase/use this is pure fear mongering. The President cannot make law and Executive orders are limited in their impact on existing law and the constitution. Thus any real change would have to come from the Congress that by recent surveys has little interest in gun legislation. On top of that, according to the NRA’s own records, the number of Democrats that the NRA gives a high rating to and supports has quadrupled in recent years.

Does any believe that in a republican controlled House and anti-gun bill would pass? Does anyone believe that in the Senate there would be 60 votes for anti-gun legislation?

So justoneguy, now obviously they don't raise the debt limit unless it's getting close to being exceeded so basically you admit that the federal deficit was over $11 trillion under Bush. Funny thing about the talking points from the right is that Bush never had that kind of deficit. You want to so Obama did it all but refuse to admit that a very large portion of the federal budget today is interest on the debt that G W Bush ran up.

Now federal budgets go from October 1 to October 1 of the next year so the 2009 budget was influenced by the TARP bill signed by Bush before leaving office but notice the deficit from 2002 through 2009 which were largely the responsibility of Bush administration. Starts out at $5.5 trillion and ends up as $11.9 trillion. Granted that almost a trillion of it was Obama's stimulus plan to jump start the economy but Bush still doubled the deficit in his 8 years as president and Obama has to pay the interest on that borrowed money. The difference between the deficit by Bush and the one by Obama is obvious. Bush wasted money on a needless Iraq war where Obama is trying to get the economy back on track without I may add any assistance from the GOP in congress.

        Lost our AAA credit rating

Spent more money than any other prez over the same time frame in 4 pathetic failing years.

Just One, you do realize that Obama didn't really increase the deficit, right??? IT was the recession. The recession drained hundreds of billions of dollars from the Treasury and increased spending on things like unemployment insurance and food stamps. I thought you "pro-business" Republicans knew basic economics. Obama has actually decreased the deficit, down $200-300 billion from 2009. And the reason we lost the credit rating was because there was no compromise between the two parties. The GOP refused to accept any tax increases (which is why they refused to agree to Obama's $4 trillion deficit plan); we couldn't get a deal; S&P downgraded. Seems to me that it's the Tea Party's fault for our downgrade...

You wonder where this crap comes from. Back before the mid-term elections, NRA VP Piere LaPew was making ROBO calls against all Democrats. It's about politics and raising money ... it has nothing to do with guns. The man should be arrested and put in jail ... he's the criminal.

Dennis, Columbus, Ohio -- Good post as always!

The NRA is just another link in the web of insidious corporatism, and corporatism is one aspect of fascism. The NRA is of course using the GOPee Wee Herman ploy of "I know you are, but what am I" fear mongering for cover. Unfortunately this far-Right "web" is not conspiracy theory. We see ALEC being used as a tool by Teapublicans and corporations to advance their interests, including the NRA and use of ALEC to spread pro-gun violence laws like "Stand Your Ground" or more accurately "Kill At Will" law.

The overall insidiousness is the same old God, Gays & Guns agenda per Feisty's opening post. The rampant legislation for God, best illustrated with all the anti-abortion attacks are still going full speed thanks to ALEC, though now becoming public as the War on Women, can it be stopped?! The Gay effort is not doing so well. And of course the Gun effort is finally back in public debate due to the Trayvon martin case.

But the most insidious of all is Big Business, and We the Corporations of America, whether oil, health insurance, Wall Street, or the gun industry, the GOP/TP are merely their puppets through complicity or ignorance, and electing a plutocrat like Romney would be a horrible mistake.

If the rightwingnuts have their way, religion will trump any personal freedoms we have. They've made it clear there is no room for diversity: we must ALL live by their religious doctrine (even though Republicans are far from Christ-like). Even Mormons were forced (by their own rightwingnut party members) to defend Mormonism as a form of Christianity.

But the "fear" of Obama has driven gun sales to ridiculous numbers and THAT's what the ads are for. A Romney election could put a damper on sales... and as we know, it's only business... nothing personal.

Gosh, I sure would like to begin hearing from Mr. Romney what his vision and agenda and plan for his presidency would be.

For the past two years we have instead heard constant negative attacks against his primary opponents, and virulent attacks against Mr. Obama.

        Questions:

Mr. Romney, do you have an identifiable vision for America? Or, should we just prepare ourselves for seven more months of you using Mr. Obama's name in every other sentence you utter?

Mr. Romney, are you aware that condemning the policies of another person is not the same thing as having your own policies?

Mr. Romney, do you believe in anything, or do you just plan to attack?

Although I am not likely to vote for you, you just might become our president. So I actually hope you believe in something, but there appears to be little evidence of that so far ...and what evidence you offer of your beliefs is always contradicted by something you once said you believed in at another time.

"Republicans are scared of a War on Guns that doesn't exist."

Republicans are scared of everything --- real or imagined and everyone who isn't exactly like them. They're scared President Obama will take their guns away even though he hasn't proposes a single law concerning guns. They're afraid of the implementation of Sharia law even though nobody in government has ever suggested it. They're afraid of blacks, Hispanics, gays, lesbians, union workers, teachers, firemen, policemen, auto workers, Planned Parenthood, NPR, PBS, atheist, main stream Christians, Mormons, Muslims -- you mane it -- they're afraid of it. The ONLY thing republicans have to sell is FEAR, FEAR, FEAR and more FEAR.

They have proliferated in states where he has no control. The few federal laws that have passed are because of what happened the last time they went after guns.

The point is he has made no effort to scale back gun laws in any meaningful way despite the fact that America is armed to the teeth with gun-toting rednecks. Seriously Phil, you'd have to go to Iran or Afghanistan to find a country with more arms. I doubt you would stop proliferating arms in the US even if people owned APV's and bazookas.... and that's exactly where we are headed. Indeed, having a legal right to shoot someone for walking on your lawn or pool-hopping is very reminiscent of Afghanistan.

From the NY Times in an article by Michael Barbaro dated January 20, 2012:

He continued: “And as an institute of public management, it helps young people learn about government and about serving in public service. And that’s where his inheritance ended up.”

Even so, Mr. Romney benefited from his father’s wealth in another way: he relied on George Romney for a loan that he used to buy his first home, in Belmont, Mass., for $42,000.

So Romney did, in fact, give his inheritance away. His father gave him a loan, presumably with the expectation it would be paid back, for his first home. So Romney made his millions upon millions with his brain and possibly some good fortune. He did not write a couple of crappy autobiographies; the bulk of which were mostly bought by a couple of rich people guiding him in politics and donated to libraries.

        Envy will consume you.

It is hard to disagree with the first three individuals. However, if you do not agree with the first three individuals then you probably agree with the last two individuals. It is never too late to see the light and I am glad Mitt Romney has.

"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the people's liberty teeth keystone... the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable... more than 99% of them by their silence indicate that they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference. When firearms go, all goes, we need them every hour."

        -George Washington

“By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fear of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the 2nd amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationship, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the 2nd Amendment will always be important.”

        -John F Kennedy

"Before Adolf Hitler came to power, there was a black market in firearms, but the German people had been so conditioned to be law abiding that they would never consider buying an unregistered gun. The German people really believed that only hoodlums own guns. What fools we were. It truly frightens me to see how the government, media and some police groups in America are pushing for the same mindset."

Democrats have become an anti-American, pro-enemy, anti-normal, pro-weird group of hard-core leftist socialists. This is who they are. They don’t even try to hide it anymore. The modern Democrat Party is not your father’s Democrat Party. Unless your father was Karl Marx. Dims regularly attack the very things that once made America strong and wealthy. Only a Democrat could state that the label “Food-Stamp President” is a compliment. Only a Dim could say that millions of Americans on unemployment or welfare is good for the economy. Only a Dim could say that out of control national debt shows the financial strength of a country. Only a Dim could say that a woman who raised five children “never worked a day in her life.” Perhaps she should have gotten a six figure job as an administrator in a Chicago hospital where she didn’t have to show up for work! But those jobs are only for liberals.

Gotta love Republicans that keep forgetting how we got here today.

Yes! It was the policies of "starving the beast" starting way back with Reagan's "trickle down" economics.

Only a Republican would cut taxes and go to war twice shouting all the way that "deficits don't matter".

Republicans pushed the economy right toward depression and in less than 1 year Obama is supposed to have it all fixed. Heck, they still won't approve increasing revenues with their eyes squarely on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

Only a Republican seeing so many out of work would cut food stamps while giving taxes cuts to millionaires.

Obama made the 4 trillion dollar deal that Boehner walked away from causing the Tea Party downgrade.

There are lots of women with 5 children that raise them and work!

No we got here because demcorats conned teh voters into giving them congress. It took four years of their incompetence before voters wised up.

Democrats inherited 4.6% unemployment and a booming economy, it took them less than two years to destroy it with their socialist "home ownership is a right" mentality. The economy only began to recover when republicans took back the house and blocked all that silliness.

Just a reminder after almost four years unemployment is still higher than when he took office. Obama told a 4 trillion lie then changed the deal when Boehner agreed, proving democrats don't want a deal.

Do you think all those who have five children and have to work would rather stay home if they could? It is democrats disaserous economic policies that are keeping wages down.

Where are you getting you information, from Rush's colonoscopy report?

Did you miss all 8 years of the Retard? When he took office we had a surplus of funds and peace.

9/11 was bad, but blowing all of our money on a war with a country that had nothing to do with it while lowering the tax rate for wealthy Americans (well, job creators, if you count all of the jobs they moved overseas to save money and increase profit) was the worst possible action. Remember his deer-in-the-headlights look when they told him? You know what was going through his mind for those 45 seconds of blankness? First he was trying to figure out how the Little Engine that Could actually made it over the hill. Then he started scheming how he could be the next war-time president just like daddy.

Larry, I think you have actually labeled the GOP with your diatribe. The GOP are the ones who are Anti-America.. Just follow me.. The GOP since Reagan have sought to snuff out the middle class while sending jobs overseas. The GOP have waged wars since the Reagan era, which has increased our debts, decreased our standing in the world. The GOPs actions have cost Trillions while decades have passed and they have ignored the homeland. Yet, when the Dems talk about taking care of America first, they are labeled as soft of terror and war. Soft on everything. The GOP are the ones who are soft. They have no backbone. Conservative men could not have and would not have set out to start this nation in the face of the brutal regime in England at that time. America was founded by Liberal men who knew that ruling a nation via religion was a dangerous concoction.

The ONLY true Americans are the Dems and Independents and people who don't kowtow to Israel or the Pope. We need real ideas to solve our problems. Not gun rights. THe GOP want war with Iran and with that brings war with China and Russia. Add that up GOP, can we afford those costs, plus the double or tripling of gas prices shortly after Iran gets invaded? Makes sense..

              Larry,

Damn right well it's not your fathers Democratic Party that one was far more liberal and weren't afraid to stand up for labor, the poor, Catholics, Jews, Women, Civil Rights, leading the nation throughWW II. Along the way they used the Federal checkbook to make higher education available, built highways and airports, passed social security, the GI bill, made mortgages affordable for the average guy. Maybe we shouldn't forget cleaning up the GOPs Depression fighting McCarthyism and hundreds of other items that built our military and industrial might.

Todays democrats resemble moderate Democrats or Progressive Republicans like George Romney in the 60s and 70s. You must have missed that whole beat generation, ban the bomb, anti-war, Earthday, Hands Across America Democratic Party. The NRA is about as relevant as Lava Lampa, Disco and Leisure Suits. Gun Control is so far down the Progressive Movements list as to be irrelevant. When we go to our secret meetings and sing the Internationale and practice our Esperanto (well some are practicing Klingon) no one ever mentions handguns or black helicopters or anything.

We are still fighting the good fight for equal opportunity and equal treatment under the law. We also seek to place women on the same footing as men, feed the poor, eliminate poverty and disease, fight for separation of Church and State, protect the environment, rebuild Americas image abroad, re-establish the middle class, rebuild our education system and move forward not backward. Other than that you had it pretty much right.

I agree, IR. As a woman whose husband goes out to try to bring home venison and bear every season ... who has helped to butcher the carcasses so that we can eat the deer (since he's never shot a bear), I think Romney is a joke. I probably shoot better than he does (and I shoot pretty darn well). We are not an NRA family. We are not a Republican family. We also are not a Democratic family. We are an Independent family. IR Va. ,

I have been a Democrat since the late 80s when I could no longer bear listening to Reagan shill for Wall Street and have James Watt watching over our birthright. I am all over the place on guns I have been to Alaska twice and always carried when walking around the woods because of bears but I don't enjoy hunting. I like to take pictures and video and I don't like venison at all I like rabbit but won't shoot one, I don't like fish or fishing love horse racing but find auto racing one step above wrestling. I enjoy target shooting but would love to see handguns way harder to get. I live outside Philly and do a lot of volunteer work in the city with kids and it was way harder for me to get a BB gun when I was thirteen or fourteen than it is for these kids to get their hands on a Sig a Glock or a Ruger.

All that being said I promise you my 92 year old mother would look more believable carrying a gun than Mitt ever will. By the way there is no threat to the second amendment. Continually fighting an issue that hasn't been an issue since about 1990 is a waste of energy.

[For Romney, winning over the NRA's roughly 4 million members nationwide will be a crucial part of rallying the party's base for November's elections.]

Mittens will tell any lie that the ignorant "party base" will believe. Romney will continue his "fear the black man" campaign and, sadly, the ignorants will listen.

Seriously. It's the fear of a black president that has spurned on an increase in gun sales. Of course, the gun lobby is going to embrace it.

I actually thought that President Obama's election would be good for race relations but it has turned out to be the opposite. The man has failed at just about everything.

That's the thing, JH, Obama isn't a progressive. He's a moderate centrist. That means that there's something else scaring these people, and the only possible thing I can imagine that is, is his skin color. He represents a changing world where white skin no longer grants one a position of privilege, and that changing world frightens them.

The progressive agend is the reason for the shellacking in 2010. And it will be the reason for the shellacking in 2012.

JH - the shellacking in 2012 is going to be totally because of the audacity of the GOP. They think they can lie and pit a party against women and we'll just blindly vote for them. They think they can belittle women and minorities and we'll just go -oh thank you - and vote for them. They think we'll forget their lies about jobs and just vote for them. No, the shellacking of the GOP in 2012 should be no surprise to anyone - but perhaps the GOP - who continue to lean so far backward (like by about 100 years) they can't seem to catch up!

Why is Romney pandering to the NRA? Nobody's talking about guns. Obama never advocated gun confiscation. This is a dead issue. Even the most virulent advocates of gun control have been silent. For better or worse, guns are ingrained in our culture, so let's not make an issue out of nothing. Romney such a paranoid dope he doesn't realize he's got the NRA in his pocket. Enough already with this foolish demagoguery.

If he wants to ride that train all the way to November, he's got to make all the expected stops along the way.

Mitt Romney has been a life-long member of the NRA since 2006; my guess is that's when Willard decided he would run for President the first time. I don't know, does paying a higher membership fee give you life-long membership or does the NRA consider once you've joined, you're a lifer? There's nothing more phoney (R or D) than a presidential candidate pretending to be a hunter traipsing the wilds of Wyoming or Iowa farm fields and an NRA life-long member. Is the NRA that ignorant and shallow that they would believe someone will support their agenda or not simply based on membership?

I have nothing against gun ownership, hunters or the NRA (except when they push legislation that favors gun manufacturers over common sense) because many of my family members do hunt and own guns for hunting purposes but I do find it disingenuous to pretend to like the NRA, pretend you're a "small varmint" hunter simply because you're running for president and that's what I see in Mitt Romney. He's as forked-tongue about the NRA as he is about every other issue.

I heard some of Romney's speech before I walked out of the room on it because once again, there was nothing about what he would do to solve problems merely finger pointing at President Obama. Mitt lies so much they need an end loader to haul his nose off stage.

With what has been released on Romney on gun control as Gov of MA. The NRA has more to fear from him than Obama. Either way this is a non-issue. Gutless politicians can't even ban 30 round clips for assault rifles.

We already have massive arms control legislation. The real constitutional question is balancing the rights of the 2nd amendment and the common good. If you don't believe this then tell me where I can get my personal M1-A1 or Apache.

IMAO, The NRA should go back to its roots and protect the gun rights of the hunters. No one with half a brain hunts anything with a pistol. Its illegal to do it in my state to begin with. Hand guns are for killing people and nothing else. If you can't protect your home and property with a bolt action high powered rifle or a 12 gauge pump with double aught buckshot then too bad for you.

Between the shooting of Gabby Giffords and her staff and supporters, including a nine year old girl, the killing of the young unarmed man in Florida, and the mass murder at the college in California just two weeks ago, you'd think rational people would be disturbed by this kind of rootin' tootin' rhetoric, but no.

The NRA likes to paint itself as the victim, instead of the creator of victims by enabling whack jobs, irate husbands and despondent lovers to more easily kill innocent people. And there's Mitt, pandering to the purveyors of violence.

Sadly, it really has nothing to do with gun rights, the NRA is merely pushing the manufacture of guns and more guns for profit by stirring fear and using the 2nd Amendment as a rallying cry.

Do yourself a favor and read a real big city newspaper for a week. You will then wonder why this Trayvon Martin case is making so much noise. As I stated above we had a teen mother assaulted in broad daylight and killed in the street while walking her child. One of 6 people in 10 days.

BTW......which arms manufacturing center does the NRA own?

For that, we are thankful, but it shows a lack of balls in a president who deeply believes we should rid guns. Obama has been Bushesque, and we didn't like Bush very much.

Seeking Sanity - you better keep seeking!

Michelle was working at the hospital at a salary of $121,00 per year. When her husband was elected to the Senate she got a promotion and raise. She was then "Vice President of External Community Affairs", a position that was created just for her. Her salary went to $316,000 per year. She promoted sending the poor patients to other hospitals so the tax payers could take care of them and her non-profit couild keep the wealthy sick folks. She was one of 16 other "vice president" at a NON-PROFIT hospital making more than an anesthesiologist made. When Michelle left to follow her hubby they never replaced her. The postion must have been very inportant, right? Why do liberals think it is OK for a non-profit hospital to pay out so much money for non essential positons? Oh wait, they can just tax others to pay for it, right?

JH - You again prove that there is NO sanity in the GOP.

"We are so very proud of Michelle personally, and we are very thankful for her professional accomplishments in creating and expanding the strategic vision for the Office of Community Affairs," said James Madara, MD, CEO of the Medical Center.

In light of her departure, Madara announced that the Medical Center’s Office of Community and External Affairs has been reorganized under the leadership of Eric Whitaker, MD, MPH, Executive Vice President for Strategic Affiliations and Associate Dean for Community Based Research.

Madara said the move would enhance support for the Urban Health Initiative, an ambitious effort to reshape health care on Chicago’s South Side.

Obama joined what was then known as the University of Chicago Hospitals in 2002 as Executive Director for Community Affairs. She built up programs for community relations, neighborhood outreach, volunteer recruitment, staff diversity and minority contracting.

In 2005, Obama was named Vice President for Community and External Affairs at the Medical Center, where she was responsible for all programs and initiatives that involved relationships between the Medical Center and the community. She was also responsible for managing the Medical Center’s business diversity program.

Obama worked on volunteer programs in the hospitals and in the community, community-based health education conducted by physicians and the Adopt-a-School initiative. Under her leadership, the number of hospital employees serving in the community increased nearly fivefold, while community members volunteering in the hospital nearly quadrupled.

Obama also helped create the South Side Health Collaborative, which finds "medical homes" for residents of the South Side who lack ready access to primary care. The South Side Health Collaborative became a major pillar of the Urban Health Initiative.

In 2007, Obama switched from full-time to part-time, and subsequently took an unpaid leave of absence to work on husband Barack’s presidential campaign.

Prior to joining the Medical Center, Obama had worked at University of Chicago as Associate Dean of Student Services. She launched and became the first Director of the University Community Service Center, which offers new opportunities to student, staff and faculty for service learning, volunteerism and civic engagement.

During her time in these positions she received various awards for her outstanding owrk.

                                      JH - you're a moron and a LIAR!

You see, the difference between a not-for-profit and a for profit is in how the employees get paid. In a for profit, the employees get a small salary, then a lot of stock, on which they pay a 15% capital gains tax, when they eventually sell. In a not-for-profit, the employer/employee taxes of social security and mendicare are paid, as well as ordinary income tax on wages/salaries.

That is the only real difference, who gets the profits. In for-profits, owners get a share, employees get the most. In not-for-profits, employees get everything, as there are no "owners." In both cases, the person making the money gets paid what the market will bear. Nothing wrong with it, Romney got and is still getting millions from Bain Capitol. Michelle Obama worked hard, did well and was promoted. Having a US Senator for a spouse is usually not something which hurts your career when part of your job is to get to know and talk to influential people. That's just reality.

How many US Senators have spouses who work. Have any of them received promotions since their spouse became Senator ? OOOOOH, maybe they should all quit.

America knows (with possibly the exception of the left leaning regulars here) these are straw men attempting to deflect from a failed president who never had any good ideas.

Michelle Obama's position was so important they did away with it immediately. She only got the job as payback for favors expected of her husband. It's the Chicago way. That....and killing.

You begin with the premise that an employer owes an employee birth control. Wrong. So an employee would not have to "explain to her employer why she wants birth control pill". Unless, of course, she simply wanted to. Instead, she would just go to Wal Mart with $9.00 and buy her some.

Technically, the law already mandates that employers cover contraceptives in their insurance, which by the way can be used for other reasons besides preventing a pregnancy. I'm not a woman, but even I know that. And you do realize that the price of medication is increasing, right??? That includes contraceptives. And if it already is the law, why should the employee have to explain why she needs contraception???? Why should that be mandated??? Isn't it a violation of her privacy????

I have noticed the price of guns and ammo coming down or at least stabilizing recently. Maybe consumers are seeing the end of the Obama regime in 207 days and don't see an urgency to buy before it's banned.

More likely they realize that all Obama has done is increase their gun rights, and stopped panicking about a black man in the White House.

We saw the same drawback in 2000 when Clinton was about to leave office. And Clinton was white.

A government may be able to ban guns, but it is impossible to eliminate them from society. All you need is some metal, a lathe, and a few common chemicals. Kids used to make deadly "zip" guns in my old neighborhood. It makes the concept of banning them futile.

Anti-business? Is that why the stock market has risen fairly steadily, even in the face of Euromarket instability, until it's now almost 13,000?

And in spite of this president being anti-business, the Dow has gone up steadily, we have had 25 months of private sector job growth, and a recovering economy. Tell me, how exactly has Obama been anti-business??? It doesn't surprise me that a conservative would brandish a liberal as "anti-business," but Obama, he's a moderate. And don't give me the bull@!$%# that Obamacare will cost jobs because that has yet to be decided. Did you know that there are perfectly good reasons for enacting policies that slow down economic growth, like preserving the environment??? All Obama has done is try to foster a recovery and steer clear from the deregulatory and supply-side policies that led us into this mess. But apparently stubborn-minded conservatives like yourselves cannot admit that you were wrong and the so-called socialists were right.

Trickle-down economics doesn't work. We gave large tax cuts to the wealthy in 2003 and so where are the jobs??? According to supply-side economics, tax cuts cause dynamic economic growth. So why did we just come out a recession and not an expansion similar to the dot-com era????

He's also banned M1 rifles from being brought back to the States for the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

President Obama will not let the "War Baby" be imported from the Korea era stockpiles because of the removable multi round clip. The M1 Garand is hopefully to be released soon, from what I have read. I guess I better add the War Baby is the .30 carbine, which I wish I would have bought a warehouse full 20 years ago.

If you think the likes of Schumer, Pelosi, etc. have changed their stance on gun confiscation, dream on. The ONLY reason it isn't on the table is because of what happened the last time they put it there.

Just because guns are more popular than ever doesn't mean they wouldn't be out in force if the opportunity presented itself.

I half wonder if the whole Martin case wasn't a trial balloon to see if they could sway sentiment., it hasn't.

I guess this confirms his War on Women! What will four butlers and a stable of nannies "stay at home mom" Ann Romney say about Etch-a-Sketch calling her a broad? More faux outrage?

Of course Romney was for guns before he was against them, and for them again!

i like the freedom of having a gun, but there has to be some sort of level of responsibility in place for owners..its gotten out of control. Now here in AZ, they want to allow guns on campuses, public buildings, and already allow them in bars..yea, as if alcohol and guns dont mix already and there arent enough school shootings...think McFly, Think!

I completely agree, and I say that as a gun owner. I don't want to live in a country where everyone is packing around me when I'm in public... it is a bigger threat to the safety of my family than just about anything else I can think of.

I shared office in 2008 with two guys who voted for Obama. One was a life-long Republican and the other was a 22-old naive kid. Neither one are voting for Obama in 2012.

Each and every post you make is just a little bit more far fetched then the last. You seriously need to actually read a book and try to save what little intelligence you might have left.

You, of all people, should never, ever be accusing somebody of being the village idiot. You are the poster child for that particular species of mankind.

We got healthcare reform; wasn't everything we hoped for, but it was a start. Those deficits were a combination of the recession and the Bush tax cuts (tried repealing those for the wealthy, but the GOP said no). Obama offered a $4 trillion package that would reduce deficits, but the GOP said no again because it had tax increases.

Do you even know why unemployment is so high??? We don't have the finances OR the guts to spend more money on stimulus projects, and middle class wages are too low. Businesses are wary of what is to come, and so they are hesitant to hire. Maybe if we stopped the bickering from both parties we could get things done.

In Obama's own words he took a shellacking yet progressive idiots haven't changed their stance one bit. Prepare for another coat this November.

How did the progressives hold firm??? Obama's deficit package was mostly cuts; he compromised on contraceptives; what else do you conservatives want??? Obama compromised during his entire term; and the GOP has simply pulled the rug out from under him. Seems like it is YOU who have been too stubborn.

And people voted in November 2010 because they were tired of the slow recovery and were swayed by the Tea Party Revolution. Now, after seeing the partisan and uncompromising attitude of the Tea Party, the American people will exact a vengeance on the politicians who promised jobs, but instead bitched about contraception and cost this nation our credit rating.

He did take away the freedoms of the Insurance Companies to refuse you coverage or to drop you if you get sick, but they are being well compensated for that and are laughing all the way to the Cayman Islands.

                                                          2. The NRA has managed to make killing people a sport!

                                                          1. It's the law in over half the states and that will expand as conceal carry has because it works. Again, the more gun laws have been liberalized the lower the violent crime rate.

                                                          2. Pathetic lie. The NRA supports and trains police officers. It supports law and order, something that irks progressives.

                                                          3. Yea, target practice! It's a fun sport, try it.

i think that particular law exists in Florida because drug dealers were rampant and not afraid to knockdown any front door and look for their money. Meanwhile, White people lived in safe harbour and christian ways so I don't know why they use this kind of legal tactic as a defendant in a trial in Florida.

Really, that's why the death rate climbed after the law was rammed through by the NRA. WE are THE PEOPLE, NOT THE NRA. Let them shoot themselves, they should not be passing legislation. Take every politician that supported them and these laws and remove them from office and END THE NRA.
