With President Obama's and Vice President Biden's 2011 tax returns now posted online, the Obama campaign is calling on Mitt Romney to release his -- as well as those going back several years.
“Mitt Romney’s defiance of decades of precedent set by presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle, including his own father, begs the question -- what does he have to hide?" Obama Campaign Manager Jim Messina asked in a statement. "Did he exploit loopholes in the tax code by keeping his investments offshore and is that why he’s protecting those loopholes now? Why did he open a Swiss bank account instead of an American bank account and establish a corporation in Bermuda instead of on our shores? Did he pay a lower income tax rate than the 13.9 percent he paid in 2010 and is that why he opposes the Buffett Rule to ensure millionaires don’t pay less taxes than middle-class families?”

Earlier this year, Romney released his 2010 tax returns, which showed he paid an effective tax rate of 13.9%, as well as an estimate of his 2011 returns.
According to Obama's 2011 returns, he paid an effective tax rate of about 20%, and Biden paid about 23%.
*** UPDATE *** Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul replies, "It’s no surprise with the worst job creation record in modern history that President Obama would try to distract Americans from the real issues with a series of sideshows. Gov. Romney has already released his 2010 return and an estimate of his 2011 income and taxes. He will release his full 2011 return when it is filed."

Romney should apologize to the American people for cheating on his taxes and then he should drop out of the race. If he had any sense of DUTY to country, he'd bring his hidden money BACK to this country and pay current AND back taxes on it. But Romney has no sense of duty to country. Got any proof that Romney cheated on his taxes or are you like the rest of the left wing ding bats just shooting off your mouth? The left would like Romney to drop out because he could end up beating Obama and the left is scared to death. I never saw anything that says Romney was drafted and he refused or found a way out of serving in the military. Bill Clinton was a true draft dodger but I don't hear the left complaining about that. Come to think of it, Obama never volunteered for the military either.

Nobody asked Willard Romney to drop out of the campaign. I think what was asked of him is to release his tax returns - which is only what Republicans asked Barack Obama to do, and he did so when he was running.

Tom, I believe if you read the post #25 from mynameis****, which I was responding to, stated Romney should apologize for cheating and drop out of the race.
The poster indicated that Romney didn't go into the service and therefore "had no sense of duty to country." I was pointing out that Bill Clinton and President Obama did not serve in the military, so I assume the poster thinks they also "had no sense of duty to country".
BTW, the left defended Clinton when he never served and in fact avoided the draft, so why is the poster now condemning Romney?

No one has asked the obvious question yet, why is there an Income Tax in the first place? We mostly had federal balanced budgets before 1913 BEFORE the unconstitutional Pernament Income Tax. Now with the Income tax, we just mostly have Federal Deficits every year. The REAL problem is that we have Taxaholics and Spendalics in DC rather than seeing what anyone paid unconstituanally in income taxes.

Just as a matter of information, everyone else knows that when a constitutional amendment is adopted, it makes the action described therein constitutional. The 16th Amendment adopted in 1913 says congress can levy an income tax. It is, therefore, constitutional.
Thanks old vet, where YOU are coming from, it took an Amendment to adopt the income tax. In otherwords, they had to Amend to US Constitution to go against the intention of our Founding Fathers. Just because a bunch of taxaholic/spendaholics amended the US Constitution does not make it Constitutional.

All this "income" that the Feds got from the likes of Obama and Romney (no matter what their politics), $Billions of it... and the Feds STILL can NOT balance the budget. Look at our US history objectively, We had MORE Balanced Budgets without an income tax than with an income tax. No matter how "much" is paid in income to the feds, it is useless so long as the taxaholic/spendaholics remain in power. Even if the "rich" paid "100%" of their income in taxes (and assuming by some miracle that did not negatively affect the economy), we would STILL have an annual federal budget deficit. The problem is NOT of lack of income tax but rather we have Spendaholics at the Fed level.

sfcret, you bet I'd like to be a millionaire! (I even play the lotto from time-to-time.) But this is about a background check on a job candidate. You know companies these days run credit reports and check facebook accounts on perspective job candidates. It doesn't necessarily reveal the candidate's qualifications, but it can reveal their character, and I want to know as much as possible about the character of a man who would be president!

The issue isn't whether Mitt has cheated on his taxes. He's too smart for that and has too many smart lawyers. It's like the illegal landscapers--he can't have that, he's running for office for cripes sake! The issue is can he relate to the average working American. When a guy who doesn't have a real job makes more each day than the average working American makes in a year, it's hard for him to relate to the average Joe. It doesn't make Mitt a bad man; it just makes him a man who cannot relate to the problems facing Americans and, therefore, can't deal with them.
And Obama can, Americans has spoken up many many times against Obama policies and Obama care, and he still turns a BLIND eye to Americans, his eyes are only open to other countries, he is an awful President and he will be gone in November in a very FAST & FURIOUS way.

stclair--Frankly, I don't care what religion a person is, as long as that person has some moral convictions. The attack on Obama's church didn't work in 2008 and it won't work now. First, Obama wasn't there half the time so there's no evidence he heard Wright say those offensive things. Second, we haven't heard the entire sermon so lack context and, third, if you've always agreed with everything your pastor says, then either your pastor doesn't say much or you weren't listening.

To give away you inheritance, then work very hard to achieve financial success is to be frowned upon and ridiculed. President Obama, first a Senator, now President, has done noting at all to address Federal Income tax reform, in total. nothing. Mr. Romney files his taxes properly and within the law of the land, and has given generously to charities all these many years. Let's see President Obama's tax records and history of giving. I understand he paid just 20.2% in Fed. Tax this year, although he states 30% would "just be fair." How about his school transcripts? How about answering why he had his SSI card issued from a state in which he never resided?

The largest donation ($117,130) went to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides free or low cost lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers.
Prior to running for Pres. apparently he gave less than 2 or 3%. I've given over 10% for twenty + years. I donate over 10+ hours every single week for over 30 years. TM, what do you do?

Kurt--I'm sure we'd all be interested in your response to Ursula's comment regarding the Second Amendment (29.3). As for the Churchill bust, it was a loan that expired with the end of the Bush presidency and was replaced by a bust of Lincoln. (see http://mediamatters.org/blog/201006290073). Better to have a bust of a British imperialist than a great American, right? As for Obama's "foreign student" status, that was debunked years ago by Urban Legends and Snopes. Regarding transcripts, candidates do not ordinarily release their college transcripts. George W. Bush did after they were leaked by someone at Yale in 1999.
