I can understand why Mitt's 2011 return isn't finished---it is complicated and some of the information has to come from other people so he wouldn't necessarily have it now. I'm sure he will file an extension til October 15 (although will that timing be any better?).

What I don't understand is why is hasn't disclosed his returns going back to 2000, as the President has done. We are told he gave those returns plus more to the McCain campaign when he was vetted by them (who knew they did any vetting?). So why aren't they being disclosed?

He would have every reason to file at the deadline if he owes more money. Do you or anyone else feel that is the reason he is waiting? Do you honestly believe he will be paying an additional amount?

He makes far to much and has the ability to pay for the best tax attorneys to take advantage of every possible loophole.

I agree...he no doubt has the best tax attorneys money can buy. I am no tax attorney, but I would think a tax attorney would advise you NEVER to go for a refund. That means you essentially gave the government an interest-free loan. Whereas if you don't pay what you owe during the year, you can make that money work for you. Would be interesting to hear from someone a bit more knowledgeable about this though.

FICA is a tax on ALL non-investment income under $106,800 which brings the effective federal tax on non-investment income up by roughly 7.5% (roughly 15% for the self employed). There are no deductions or loopholes I'm aware of that can be applied to FICA taxes.

SO... If you are a married couple running your own business it is easy to see how your "effective" rate could well exceed 30% even if you are making far less that $500k/year

Social security is not a tax, it is a benefit. The FICA TAX funds Social security so while the benefit you are paid is not a tax you are taxed to pay for the benefit. The same goes for medicare, medicare itself is not a tax, but it is paid for with... wait for it... the FICA tax.

Well, after we the people hassled Obama by questioning his eligibility for office (unprecedented) and by accusing him of being a Muslim, I think we can let the college transcripts slide, don't ya think???

Come on folks! It's not about how rich Romney is, it's about how he made his fortune, what he does to protect his fortune, and how he views himself and the small percentage of other people like him versus the 99%. We already know Romney uses every legal loophole there is and maybe some that are not so legal.

The other issue is his constant, repeated efforts to hide things about himself. He is winning the GOP/TP nomination by default, and hopes to win the presidency the same way--without being vetted first, and that we should all wait until after he is elected to learn what positions he will take. The issue with Mitt Romney paying an effective rate of 16% is not that it is on dividends, because its not, its really the results of many years of vulture capitalism when he "worked" at Bain Capital.

The way Wall Street has worked the tax code is this: for most people, you work, get a paycheck, pay taxes on what you earn as ordinary income. Wall Street works differently. You work, a small part of your income is in salary, the majority, if not all of your income, you take as stock or stock options or some type of equity. You don't pay Social Security or Medicare taxes on the stock, you don't even have withholding of federal or state income tax.

The stock is not income to you until you sell it, but the company gets to deduct NOW the value of the stock based on what it was worth the day they gave it to you. Later, when you do eventually sell it, it still is not subject to Social Security or Medicare tax, its capital gains, which is taxed at 15% (or 10% if your ordinary income rate is lower,) not the graduated rates of ordinary income. So, for most people who are able to convert their payroll into stock, they (and the employer) avoid paying 12.4% social security tax, 2.9% medicare tax plus probably another 15% from the lower income tax rate. SP. a person who owns a publicly traded company takes stock effectively cuts his tax rate by about 30% by taking stock income. Not a bad gig if you can get it.

THAT'S how the tax code works for the wealthy.

If you look at Obama, he paid an effective tax rate of 20.5% on income of $789,684. I didn't see anywhere where you complained about that.

My suggestion to you is to stop showing your ignorance, pull out your tax return. If it is a form 1040 U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (like the President's) take the total tax on line 61 and divide that by the adjusted gross income (AGI) you show on line 37. That is your EFFECTIVE TAX RATE.

On a 1040 EZ form Income Tax Return for Single and Joint Filers With No Dependents those line numbers are AGI - line 4 and total tax - line 6

On a 1040A form U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (which can be used for married couples with dependants as well) those line numbers are AGI - line 21 and total tax - line 41.

Please note that the President elected to have his return of $24,515 applied to next years return and he did not decide to send in a check out of the goodness of his heart to the Treasury so he could help pay down the debt.

Personally, I don't criticize Romney because of his success (I'd also like to become a multimillionaire); it's about his relationship with the common man. People who pay capital gains tax (investments) pays around 14%.

People who pay income tax (take home pay) pays a higher rate.

And as he has stated on several occasions, he invests his money (as any of us do with a 401K) through someone else and doesn't have control of what those investments are. You would probably be surprised at the "foreign markets" that some of your money goes to if you do have a 401K managed by someone else.They are deemed best by the "group" for maximum return for the "client".

Actually, the people who have a "blind" trust have a great deal of control over where the money is invested. They maintain the right to appoint the trustee (always) and can simply inform the trustee that they need to not have any money in foriegn bank accounts. Any trustee who fails to follow basic intructions will not be trustee for very long.

Its just mind boggling that NO ONE understands that dividends on investments aren't taxed at the same rate as regular income. He hasn't done anything illegal and shouldn't be ashamed by it. Just wait until Obama changes the dividend tax rate and people start investing differently causing even more fluctuation in the stock market which would affect 401k investments heavily. Maybe instead of everyone complaining that they are taxed at a higher rate, they can start investing in companies that pay a dividend on their shares.

There are many reasons other than having something to hide or to evade tax for having a foreign bank account. As much as it has been publicized don't you think the IRS would investigate if they thought Romney did anything illegal?? They certainly went after all of the Obama appointees that had cheated on their taxes and those persons all lied by claiming to be dumb and innocent. Then there is Mccaskill who did not pay tax on her aircraft even as the Dems attack the tax benefits derived by owning a private aircraft (hypocrisy at its best, the Dems certainly have that one down pat).

Also, people just don't seem to get the fact (or liberals ignore the facts because they don't like the answer) that dividends are a distribution of after tax corporate earnings. They are a distribution, not income. So even subjecting them to a 15% tax amounts to double taxation and a federal tax rate on those earnings of around 45%. Another reason for the low rate on dividends is to encourage corporations to distribute their excess earnings so that recipients will pay current tax on the distributions. If the corporation simply holds onto the excess earnings a tax deferral is created.

And since when is what is on a candidates personal tax return a reflection of their qualifications for office?? If that were true, then it seems to me that Romney is a lot smarter than Obama, he certainly is a lot more successful.

Everyone has their faults and no one knows everything....There is just too much out there for the human mind to grasp. However I have experienced a lifetime of varied experiences and have been able to sort out some of the things that work from the things that dont work. The title tells you everything you need to know about his performance at Harvard Law. Do you really care if he got a 3.889 or 3.891? The performance level of someone who can manage that honor at the most prestigious law school on earth is an order of magnitude beyond yours at the very least.

And if by tax reform you mean giving huge tax cuts and not naming a single loophole that you plan to remove or scale back and assuming that revenues will return to 19% of GDP because of "dynamic economic growth" even with the Bush tax cuts still in place, then yes, Ryan has offered tax reform, albeit in favor of the wealthiest Americans. He could have easily just saved the paper and ink and given the middle and lower classes a one-digit salute on television.

Romney's tax return for last year has been carefully scrutinized and he hasn't filed his return this year yet, having received an extension from the IRS. Why are you so concerned about his tax return? The IRS would surely have audited him by now and they haven't found anything wrong.
