Obama: Spouses are 'off-limits' in campaigns

President Obama responded to democratic strategist Hilary Rosen’s comments about Ann Romney having never worked a day in her life by saying that it was an “ill-advised statement by somebody on television.”  In an interview with the Columbus affiliate WCMH, he also said that spouses are “off-limits” because they have a “really tough job.”

In an interview with NBC affiliate WCMH, the President calls Rosen's comments "ill-advised."

The President and the rest of the Democratic establishment has been quick to distance themselves from the comments that have become a rallying and fundraising cry for the Romney campaign but also the Republican National Committee.

When the winds blow the president’s way, he’s OK. In this
case, their strategy backfired, and he’s trying now to walk it back.

And Rosen is the latest to be thrown under the bus.

"Their strategy"???

From the Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/the-hilary-rosen-controversy-is-absurd/2012/04/12/gIQAD9m0CT_blog.html

"Fox’s Greta Van Susteren has defended Rosen, claiming that Rosen clearly
was just saying that Ms. Romney has not raised a family while working a full
time job. But the quote is what it is: Whatever Rosen meant, she shouldn’t

have worded it the way she did, and even Obama campaign officials quickly
condemned it.

That aside, though, the real question is: Does Rosen work for the Obama
campaign or the Democratic National Committee, or not?

The answer is, “not.”

A spokesperson for CNN tells me that contributors are not allowed to function
as paid advisers to any campaigns or party committees. The CNN spokesperson
emails:

Hilary Rosen, like all CNN contributors, is not a paid advisor to
any political party or presidential campaign.

And from the same article:

Update: Hilary Rosen is out with a new statement:

“Let’s put the faux ‘war against stay at home moms’ to rest once and for all. As a mom I know that raising children is the hardest job there is. As a pundit, I know my words on CNN last night were poorly chosen. In response to Mitt Romney on the campaign trail referring to his wife as a better person to answer questions about women than he is, I was discussing his poor record on the plight of women’s financial struggles...

As a partner in a firm full of women who work outside of the home as well as stay at home mothers, all with plenty of children, gender equality is not a talking point for me. It is an issue I live every day. I apologize to Ann Romney and anyone else who was offended. Let’s declare peace in this phony war and go back to focus on the substance.”

Uh, guys? While Obama is busy trying to walk back the statements that blew up in his face,( and there is not a person over the age of five who does not believe that the woman who was brought on board by the DNC to try to tone down Debbie Wasserman Shultz's big mouth was not fully aware of, and actively encouraged to, say what she said- its called plausible deniability, and it failed),

The North Koreans just fired off a long range rocket, which may or may not have succeeded.

What does that mean? Well, for instance, the range of this rocket allows it to bring a payload to Hawaii or Alaska. The leaders of North Korea are certainly nuts enough to do that.

It means that Obama's latest gambit- offering 250,000 tons of food aid if they will just, please, not fire any more rockets- failed. Mostly because it was a measly amount, dwarfed by the amount of food aid they receive from China.

It also failed because it was bilateral. China needs to be the big club at the negotiating table. We need to get China to use that position by threatening to remove MFN status if they do not.

So far, Obama's efforts have been lame, at best, when he can even be bothered to pay attention to North Korea. Too many fundraisers, so little time.

Yup, Obama said today that the comment about Ann Romney by "some person on tv" was wrong.

I read that Rosen, the some person on tv, has been to the white house over 30 times.

I'm guessing she won't be back there anytime soon. Time to fade away Hilary.

Nojo, don't hold your breath waiting for the Chinese to reign in N. Korea. If the N. Koreans do anything loony like launch a nuke, the Chinese can just say "hey, it wasn't us, it was them nutso N. Koreans." As for MFN status, our economy is too tied to the Chinese to make such a threat credible. We need their cheapo goods, especially now. Hmmm, if only we had a manufacturing base to fall back on. Too bad all the manufacturers left a long time ago.

She has made it a political issue and now Obama is quick to damage control mode! Why would the left mock a mother?

Chucky, think "global economy".

It's really no different than your options when shopping for a television.you have multiple manufacturers, multiple retailers.

We withdraw MFN status from China- we can get cheap good manufactured from Taiwan, India, Sri Lanka- the list is long.

Would there be a temporary dislocation? Sure. Would Walmart scream? Absolutely.

In order to prevent a dislocation, manufacturers would need some warning- given the 24 hour news cycle, that's a non-issue.

That threat, backed by manufacturing movement that toolkit seriously, would get China acting before you could blink.

Quit excusing Obama's ineptitude.

Hey NoBlow,

BO didn't walk back anything. He came out and flat out said that he didn't approve of what was said. Thats not walking back a statement. If you want to know the definition of "walking back a statement", you'll see what it means when your candidate has a real interview with a journalist, and not spoon fed by Fox, or when he standing next to the president in an actual debate. Then you will know what walking back a statement really means. Kind of like one long "Palin moment.

The threat to revoke MFN status is an empty threat. We need them more than they need us. We don't bloody make anything here anymore! Bring back manufacturing, then make your threats.

I don't care if its Obama or Romney, we need a manufacturing base in this country sooner rather than later if we want to keep on top.

Im going to tell you the same thing I told people in the 1980's when we were buying a lot of goods from Japan-

What we are buying are disposable goods. What are disposable goods? iPads. DVD players, cheap clothing-

In other words, goods that can be obtained elsewhere at the same price.

We do have manufacturing in this country- albeit, not at the same rate as, say, the 1960's. Why?

How much are you willing to pay for a tee shirt? Or a DVD player, or an iPad- or any of the other goods manufactured in other countries?

When the cost of production exceeds the price consumers are willing to pay, something has got to give.

Is the sound of Lobbyist Grover Norquist flushing the government down the plughole with his taxfree - but only for the wealthy - society.

..................................

To the subject -- the wealthy have lots of options, while other folks may not see a light in the tunnel at all. Every family has needs and issues to solve. A woman may be out of work for a lot of reasons. Some women opt to live very frugally and stay at home with their children, if it is at all possible, etc.

For many it is not possible. More household breadwinners are women nowadays. About 200,000 teachers have been put out of work by Republican Governors. And as you know, the majority of teachers are women.

      baldeagle,

You are so far from being truthful. President Obama has made numerous attempts to divide truth, attacking the conservatives at every opportunity. Rosen spoke for Obama, no question, and it didn't hit the mark his people thought. The backlash from this didn't fly in the manner they thought it would. Now it's a matter of damage control. Michelle's statement was more political than not. Rosen is now another member of the tribe to be thrown under the bus.

Just look at the comments of Obama. Republicans want bad air, bad water, hate women, want to feed the rich at the expense of the poor. Rubbish. Yeah, I really want that.

Obama is the divider dude, without question. What else can he do but move away from the failure of his administration to create non-issues for the media to focus on? He's attempting to have his Media SuperPac generate more hate against the GOP.

      Reply#7 - Thu Apr 12, 2012 6:54 PM EDT

I actually thought Rosen's comment was politically astute. The President condemned it, because he's a better man than both Rosen and me. IBut, I'd say it's astute because the pool of wealthy housewives is pretty small in the electorate, and they were probably going to vote Republican anyway.

Republicans are running around defending women who choose to stay at home. Well, I admire husbands and wives who sacrifice so that one parent can stay home, and I certainly wish the young people in my family could even swing that, and keep their insurance, but the majority of working parents don't have that "choice."

I don't see any unwarranted attacks on Michelle, but would like to see her 'hidden' college thesis! Is that too much to ask for baldeagle?

Well dlb with over thirty trips to the WH to meet with Obama, you have to wonder just how connected she is and what he wants her to speak on.

Now she's just another thrown under the bus by this administrator. And how many have been thrown under the bus by Barry?

          Weery,

I'll agree that every politician lies. I'm sure the president has had a few as well, but I've never seen a politician lie like Romney. I don't even think he realizes it anymore. It just comes so natural to him now that even he thinks it's true.

Weery? REALLY? It's a VERY long list ... ok well here are some to start with...

          1. "The president is planning on cutting $1 trillion out of military
          spending."

That's a Romney favorite, but it’s not at all accurate.

          2. "This president has opened up no new markets for American goods
around the world in his three years, even as European nations and
          China have opened up 44."

That's not even close to being true.

          3. "We've got a president in office three years, and he does not
have a jobs plan yet. I’ve got one out there already and I’m not
          even president, yet."

This one actually includes multiple lies.

          4. "Our navy is smaller than it’s been since 1917."

That's wildly misleading and intended to deceive.

          5. "Don't forget who it was that cut Medicare by $500 billion. And
that was President Obama, to pay for Obamacare."

As Romney almost certainly knows, that’s just not true.

          6. "I went off on my own. I didn’t inherit money from my parents."

          Yes, actually, he did.

          7. "While we’ve got $15 trillion of debt, [the president] said,
'Look, I’m going to put another $1 trillion of debt for
          Obamacare.'"

That's demonstrably ridiculous. The Affordable Care Act doesn't
add to the debt, it cuts the debt by hundreds of billions of
          dollars.

          8. "I stood as a pro-life governor and that’s why the Massachusetts
Pro-Life Family Association supported my record as governor,
          endorsed my record as governor.”

Actually, Romney was a *pro-choice* governor until late in his
term (right around the time he decided he’s run for president as
a culture warrior), and when he was endorsed by the Massachusetts
Pro-Life Family Association, Romney forcefully rejected their
          support.

          9. "I'm concerned about the poor in this country. We have to make
sure the safety net is strong and able to help those who can't
help themselves. I'm not terribly worried about the very
wealthiest in our society; they’re doing just fine."

In reality, Romney wants to slash spending on programs that
benefit the poor, shred the safety net, and give the very
wealthiest in our society another generous tax cut.

          10. Romney described himself as "someone who's lived in the real
          streets of America."

It's unclear what constitutes a "real" street in Romney's mind,
but given his wealth and background, this is, at a minimum,
          entirely misleading.

It would be best if the wife and kids were left out of the political furor, but it won`t happen. They are too handy. Attack politics have been a part of elections as long as this country has been around. It`s just part of the process. Rep. West`s comment about progressives being communist was just a statement. He offered nothing to back it up. Besides, he probably thinks anyone to the left of Limbaugh is a communist. That proves he knows nothing about communism. It`s a matter of considering the source. Let`s not make a federal case.

I won't defend the communist title but look up the Congressional Progressive Caucus and it's 80 +/- current members. Even Pelosi was a member until she became speaker of the house. This is by definition a socialistic caucus even though in it's formation in 1991, it was considered communistic.

Obviously, we have forgotten the rules--it's always ok to slime Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, but pointing out how many servants Ann Romney has is wrong. Pointing out that a family values politician has a daughter with an out-of-wedlock child is also wrong, because that's a fact about a Republican, and we must avoid those at all costs. It was funny, actually, when Fox commentators whine that NEVER! IN! THE! WORLD! had a female politician been so badly treated when Gov. Palin was facing questions about her intelligence and ability.

So yeah, but that does not discount the fact that Ann does not know what it is like to have three children, take em to a sitter before work, go to work, spend the evening trying to juggle the kids sports, homework, supper, laundry and baths and clean up the mess after they are in bed. The average woman doesnt have a clue how hard she works, but they wish they did, and then! Yep, the alarm goes off and they get up and do it all over again!

If spouses are "off limits" in a campaign, then they need to stay the hell out of the lime light during the campaign as well.

The 'mommie wars"...ummm. Having been both at stay-at-home mother of three with 12 straight years of high school activites and a middle management 12 hour a day , 9-5 job, I can tell you this: There is NOTHING that prepares you for working in the public that you learn raising children.

I loved raising my kids. They were and are the light of my life. I wouldn't trade it for anything. But as a mother you are in charge. Your word is final and you don't have to take 'NO' as an answer.

Unless you count creative manipulation as a job skill you are lost in the work place. Oh but this is a political wife. I guess maybe she did learn a few job skills. Perhaps Mrs. Wannabe can deal with public harrassement, twisted and inventive reports and bold face lies. Or perhaps she should go back to being a 'stay-at-home'!

of course he would say that. his spouse is
a racist and oboma is leading America to become a socialist country. very sad.

                  Socialism is
the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. Its
inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

Hey! Did you vote for Grover Norquist? Sounds like you like the idea of your party taking oaths to a lobbyist and giving him the power to run the country on their behalf. Yeah, that socialist Obama! When is he going to get it thru his head that corporations do have the right to vote and is the wave of the future! How dare he protect them lower class citizens instead of them rich ens. How dare he!
