Crossroads joins tag team hitting Obama on gas prices

Crossroads GPS, the outside GOP group backed by former George W. Bush political adviser Karl Rove and others, has a new TV ad knocking President Obama on the issue of gas prices.

In what Crossroads GPS says is a $1.7 million buy, the ad is airing in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, and Virginia.

And it's in direct response to an Obama campaign TV ad in these same states -- which was rebutting an earlier ad from a GOP outside group, American Energy Alliance, with ties to the conservative Koch Brothers.

Crossroads GPS, by the way, is NOT a Super PAC. It's a 501c4 organization that DOESN'T have to disclose its donors. The Super PAC which DOES have to disclose its donors is American Crossroads.

Really?

What do you expect from a bunch of secret robber baron's who have money to burn?

Karl Rove has done more to denigrate the current political environment then anyone else in recent memory!

What would he change now?

In 2008 and in 2006 Rove proved that he is certainly not as an astute politician as he claims to be. He is the biggest liar since Goebbels. He and fox news have poisoned the political climate in this country for perhaps generations to come. They are always waving the flag and calling themselves patriots, but have done nothing constructive for our country and love only themselves rather than their country.

Wayne,

I couldn't agree more - the great divide in this country began with the 2000 Bush campaign.

The difference now is, we are allowed to speak out whereas when "W" was President anyone who disagreed with him was labeled a traitor!

"You're either with us or against us"...

These people make me sick!! Yuck. Liars, liars and bigger liars.

They are probably behind the rise in gas prices.

Turn off the TV or change the channel.

On a more positive note, I was reading a blog that SCOTUS might revisit the Citizen's United ruling, under a new challenge. Let's hope so.

WE JUST CAN'T WAIT! - until the 2012 election when Mr. Obama will end his reign as will a number of liberal legislators from the Progressive and Democratic side.

It's getting closer to beginning the core process. I can't wait to hear Mr. Obama defend his record of non-achievement, spending and mis-stating the truth as he does. And it will be funny hearing from the Clowns of the Vine spinning the virtures of Mr. Obama and his failed administration.

Let's take the gloves off and have some fun!

You'll be waiting until 2016 to see President Obama's administration come to an end, winemaker. Etch-A-Sketch will not inspire registered Republicans to get off their fannies in November and cast their ballots for a rich, disconnected con man like him. Romney might just as well give his concession speech the day he receives the nomination.

President Obama in November! He is our only rational choice!

Both of these pieces are 34 seconds of rapid-fire sound bites that basically leave me saying "wait, wait, WUHHHT?" Content (or more precisely, lack of) aside the most disturbing thing about ads like this is that apparently voters make choices based upon them - the sponsors would not put up the money if they believed the ads were not efficacious.

Best tool to render a Super PAC or similar organizations impotent is the OFF button.

THIS IS JUST FUN AND GAMES FOR CROSSROADS & KOCH.

THIS IS WHAT THEY DO FOR KICKS.

THEY KNOW AS WELL AS WE DO THAT OIL IS A GLOBAL COMMODITY, DICTATED BY GLOBAL OIL MARKETS.

Gas at the pump went very high under the President Bush. It happens every year like clockwork and is dictated by global oil markets every year like clockwork. Oil is a global commodity. Oil prices go up and down in tandem, no matter the size of country or how much oil it produces.

And no matter which party. We need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil for national security reasons as well.

But that's not what Obama and the left wingers were saying in 2008. I remember a lot of talking points from the left was the high prices were the fault of Bush and his oil friends. Remember the old saying "what goes around comes around", or something like that. Also remember "pay back is a b!tch".

Was it just fun and games for Obama and left wingers in 2008? BTW, most agree that the President can influence the price of gasoline by having a sound and realistic energy policy, which Obama does not have.

Obama has been the most divisive president ever. There has never been a president who blames others as much as Obama. Obama has flip-flopped more, lied more, and he is unequaled in his failure as a leader. It WILL take generations to recover from his policies and debts.

I would also have to agree that Bush comes in probably a distant second as a failed administration. Obama is one and done, though.

"The political brinksmanship of recent months," the company said, "highlights what we see as America's governance and policymaking becoming less stable, less effective, and less predictable than what we previously believed."

The agency pointed to political reluctance to make cuts to entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security, and Republicans' refusal even to consider increasing revenues by, for instance, ending the Bush tax cuts.

"Compared with previous projections, our revised base case scenario now assumes that the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, due to expire by the end of 2012, remain in place," the company said. "We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the [debt ceiling deal]."

Al, maybe we should wait until June and July to determine which administration has the highest gas prices. Remember you can't compare Mar gas prices to Jun gas prices.

I will bet come Jun or Jul, Obama will release millions of gallons of oil from the oil reserves to try and bring down prices.

      #2.2 - Tue Apr 10, 2012 6:29 PM EDT

Releasing the reserves will do nothing to lower prices these days. We already have a glut of oil on the market. And its a global market, which the president has no control over whether their name is Bush or Obama. Folks who claim now in 2012 that the president can affect the price of oil are every bit as naive as those who blamed Bush in 2008.

One of the biggest marketing gimmics, next to the marketeers of golf clubs, is the seasonal blend of gasoline. Prices should change in CA due to the "Summer Blend" selling soon at the pumps. What a crock! What is the difference in high test vs. regular: a pint of additive added to the tank truck prior to leaving the plant.

But purchase that new driver for the golf course, you will hit it higher, longer and straighter and only give up $400 to $500 for the privledge. Heck, a few $ spent in lessons, and your game will improve!

marketing, the Democratic Party ploy; he can't talk the walk, but he can talk the talk. WE JUST CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER - correct the error in 2012.

Gas prices in this country have a huge percentage of the per gallong pump prices going to various taxing agencies, but it is considered a sacrilege to suggest that government forgo some tax revenue and curtail spending. I am amazed at the number of people commenting on this thread that simply cannot wait to pay higher taxes and higher prices for everything......"because that is how it is in Europe" This is the United States, and everyone seems to want to come here-wonder why that might be? Perhaps because people can keep a higher percentage of what they earn by labor or investment, because people can make choices with their money and how it shall be used....but I am listening to a bunch of people, anxious to relinquish all their freedom and all their cash to have somebody else work out their problems for them.

        Hey, Annoyed.

Let's say the President can't control oil prices. Let's also agree that every time prices spike, Congress goes into a tizzy and calls for an investigation of speculators. The investigations never turn up manipulation but they tizzy anyway - so to look all concerned.

Using the old theory of supply and demand.....increased drilling in our waters and on our land would bring down the prices IF the oil we recover stayed within our borders. We'd keep our production within our borders IF we truly had the gumption to turn energy independent. We don't have the gumption, though. And besides, that would make us isolationists. (Wouldn't it be great if we didn't have to buy oil from countries who hate us?)

One thing that can be done is to get a grip on the dollar. Since oil is priced in USD's, our sadly weak dollar hurts us terribly. The dollar goes down, oil prices go up and we suffer. Our dollar is weak - and has been - because of our huge and accumulating debt, sustained zero % interest rates, our dysfunctional government and disastrous fiscal policies. Now, I contend these are things the President can do something about - if only to bring Congress together, act on pro-growth policies, and work to get our fiscal house in order.

        What do you think?

His initiatives to creating alternative energy and fuels have been a dismal failure. He has continuously made decisions to hamper domestic oil production. He has crippled the Keystone oil project.

The sad thing is that Obubba has been even less successful with the American creation of jobs ! All this happy talk of a turn around in job growth here lately is just a smoke and mirrors show for the DemocRATS' election efforts !

Actually, our policies from three years ago do control where the gas prices are now. We have 1.4 trillion bbl. of oil, this would be enough to influence global oil prices, if we were producing it. However, we have to change energy policy today to have this effect in 5 to 10 years from now.

The estimated global usage of oil in 2013 will be 91 bbl. per day. Our domestic production was 8.5 million bbl. per day in 2009 and has now grown to 10 million bbl. per day. Our domestic usage is 20 million bbl. per day. Because, we are not a major oil exporter at this point, we cannot influence world prices in today's marketplace; however, that can be changed.

We need to ramp our refining and production capacities to exceed all domestic use by 2020. If we can accomplish this goal, then we can become an exporter of oil. Once we start exporting this oil, we will bring down world prices.

By the way, the 1.4 trillion bbl. in technologically extractable oil would meet the world's full daily demand of 91 million bbl. per day for over 41 years. If we just produced 30 million bbl. per day and exported 8 million bbl. per day (assuming 10 years from now we use about 22 million bbl. domestically) it would influence prices and last over 120 years.

Of course, there is a floor on price decreases from this oil. We need a price point on the market of $60 to $70 per bbl. to make oil from tar sands and oil shale economically feasible. This price point is still 40% below our current price of crude oil.

Bruce is, of course, dead wrong. Here is a link to a spreadsheet showing world oil reserves. The US has relatively small reserves...from one third to one half of a country like Venezuela, never mind truly oil-rich nations. We do not have enough reserves to influence world petroleum prices and Bruce's ravings are nothing more than expressions of his rich fantasy life:

        Typical of today's Republican party.

Republicans criticize President Obama for gas prices the week we learn US oil supplies for this time of year are at the highest level since 1990.

Amazing how today's Republicans criticize a President for putting the US oil supply in the best shape it's been in 22 years.

        2008 oil = $140/barrel and gas was $4/gallon.
        2012 oil = $101/barrel and gas is $3.75/gallon.

Republican oil industry Koch brothers have to attack the President, otherwise Americans would realize the Koch brothers are charging us around the same price despite costs being 25% less.

First I agree presidents can't control gas prices as they are determined on the world market.

That said where were the people wo are complaining about the Republicans criticizing Obam for high gas prices when they were criticizing Bush and blaming him for high gas prices.

Bush couldn't control the price any more than Obama can.

What a president can control is where we get our oil in that if Obama allowed more drilling in the short term on federal lands it would have a stabilizing effect on prices and create jobs.

The fact is anouncing more drilling would cause speculators to worry about a glut and they would bid oil down.

Even if the price didn't go down at least the money would be paid for American and Canadian oil better than paying for oil from countries who want to kill us.

Lastly we do need to develop alternative fuels for the future but the reality is it is going to take quite a while for alternatives to be economicall viable.

Consumers won't embrace alternatives until they are cost effective, that is reality.

Just a few points.. Oil production in the U.S. is already higher then anytime since October 1998, so by your theory, the price should be dropping rapidly. Unfortunately, we do not and cannot produce enough Oil in the U.S. to offset the loss of any OPEC countrie's production, or the steadily increasing demand of China.

This Means that you could announce, tomorrow, that we were going to begin drilling in every inch of ANWAR, Off every Coast in the U.S. and every square inch of Oil Shale, and the World Oil market would shrug and point to unrest in Syria and Iran. You want to drive down oil prices? Only a couple of ways to do that, kill off a majority of the Chinese population, or stabilize the Middle East so that Production is never threatened again. Barring that, we have to stop using Oil for Energy. Period.

I received a 'robo call' last week on the upcoming election. All went fine until we hit the 5th question, asking how I felt about 'Obamacare' on a scale of 1 to 5. 1=hate, 5=appreciate...

When I selected 5, the robo just couldn't compute my answer... Wonder how many polls are rigged this way! As soon as they said 'Obamacare' it was pretty obvious who sponsored it, and what they wanted the answer to be. After 3 tries, I just hung up. Yup, nice to know the GOP polsters are listening to the people!

Just as many times as I have been cut off from a telephone poll or robo call because my views didn't mesh with the liberal agenda that the poll was trying to promote.

Demand for oil in China and India is the main culprit for high oil prices. Its a "global" commodity. However, if the Koch-caine brothers and rove want to spend their money on their BS ads, let em! It will be one of the costliest losses in election history

Do they mean the gas prices that have gone down a couple of cents lately? Do they mean the gas prices that will go down during the summer according to experts because the Saudis are increasing production and things in Iran are leveling off? That oil?

Rove didn't say a word when gas prices went up during the Bush Administration and now he's ready to pounce on Obama for higher gas prices. Neither Bush nor Obama control gas prices. Speculators and suply and demand cause price changes. Stupid Rove.

Yeah, these are the same folks who looked the other way while gas prices soared to about $4.50/gallon under George W. Bush. Now they're claiming that Obama is responsible for the current rise in gas prices? Sadly, some people will buy into this...

The "Ad Salvos" have begun for the November election. Karl Roves' "American Crossroads" and others have been attacking president Obama Through ads from Exxon/Mobil and other giants wanting to keep their subsidies intact. The tax debate will take center-stage along with "Seeking Independents" in November. Having heard that Romney is a velcro candidate, I wondered what has stuck to Romney? He like the tall trees the right height; his wife drives two Cadillac's; his California mansion has elevators for his cars and he like to fire people who do not provide good services. When he released his tax return for 2010, it was disclosed he paid 13.7% on 21 million in income, while the average Joe would pay a higher percentage on $100,000.00 dollars of earned income. America has been warned about the concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people and the concentration of power in stricter, less compassionate hands. Get involved locally to control your lives. Get registered, get involved, vote! Then get out the vote! The power of control is at the local level and the TEA party have used their tactics to garner more local control in multiple states. States like Virginia, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Your state might be next!

Rudy, the oil companies don't get "subsidies". A subsidy would be money you receive. The oil companies get deductions. That means they are allowed to take the cost of exploration from the taxes they pay. It's something just about every business gets to do. It keeps the costs down. So unless you want to pay more for gas than you already have to, I would quit bitching about it.

Wrong . I am a businees man that would love the be of and beyond breaks they get each year. Nothing to do with the cost of business. Get involved don't believe this crap. Look it up.

I looked it up. The percentage depletion allowance , the oil depletion allowance lets certain companies deduct 15% of the gross income they derive from oil and gas wells from their taxable incomes, and continue to do that for as long as those wells are still producing. Some smaller companies get to increase the deduction by 1% for every dollar the price of oil falls below $20 a barrel.

The rationale for this loophole is that it encourages exploration for new oil

Oil industry executives argue that other businesses are allowed to depreciate the costs of their manufacturing investments. And they are. So I don't know what business you are in, but you might want to get a Tax attorney, oncearepub.

While you are doing that, you might look at the amount of Tax the Government makes on a gallon of gasoline and diesel fuel. They make money on the deal.

Nobody here seems to acknowledge that BP, Exxon, etc are all actively researching ways to create viable alternative energy, because it is too easy to assume and call these companies vile names, too easy to make them the evil villain. You constantly scream about the Conservatives trashing good news and only focusing on the bad, but your are just as guilty in the other direction. BP now stands for Beyond Petroleum, and if these "greedy SOBs want to continue getting huge profits" then it is most certainly in their best interests to be in the forefront of exploration of energy alternatives...as it has been repeated time and again in these threads, that the world won't have any petroleum to fight over in the future......That being said, I believe that the research for alternative sources and extending our current researches is also being funded, in part, by the supposed subsidies that you are so against.....Guess you are against the United States having any sort of fuel...if you don't directly profit from it's manufacture or distribution.

And what is wrong with that.....I already work those hours and cannot make ends meet in Mr. Obama's world of Hope and Change....And I am highly educated and not in some fluffy "world studies' type of degree...Stop thinking that you are so superior to everyone else. I really believe that arrogance and belief that you are better is the cutting weak point of the liberals in general

Obama is no more to blame for the higher gasoline prices now than Bush was for the higher prices in 2004. POTUS has no direct control over the day-to-day pricing of gasoline at the pump and the American public shouldn't be gullible to believe Karl Rove and his band of merry storytellers saying otherwise.

No President can control gas prices it is the speculators that do this?

Fox News: High Gas Prices Not the President’s Fault, Unless It’s Obama

And yet, if we turn the clock back to 2008, it turns out that a number of those 97 news stories about high gas prices, were by Fox News commentators explaining why the president has no control of such things.

Obama can not control prices per say, but he can have a huge effect on where the oil comes from, by him saying no to drilling on our own land or off shore or no to the pipeline he encourages the price that we pay to increase, I know he wants to push green, I agree but not the way in which he does. The lies or nonfacts that obama spouts turns not just me off but a hell of a lot of people that know better. I'm an independent I don't care for the gop and their crap either, seems like this country is going to hell in a handbasket. Lets hear the truth from somebody for a change instead of someones agenda or ego.
