First Thoughts: The tax debate cometh

The tax debate cometh: Obama and Democrats to focus on tax fairness… GOP to focus on tax hikes… American Crossroads to begin its advertising blitz soon… Crossroads also admits that Obama -- so far -- is winning the tax debate… Gingrich calls Romney “far and away the most likely” GOP nominee… Santorum remains off the campaign trail… Conservative groups begin their fire on Lugar… And over the holiday weekend, Grassley called Obama “stupid” in Twitter message.

*** The tax debate cometh: Given that Americans across the country will be filing their tax returns this week, don’t be surprised if the issue of taxes takes center stage in the political debate. Indeed, Democrats are emphasizing tax fairness and the so-called “Buffett Rule.” So the Obama campaign today is holding a conference call (with Sen. Dick Durbin, and Wisconsin Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin) demanding that Mitt Romney explain why he opposes wealthy Americans paying a lower effective tax rate (due to their investment income) than folks in the middle class. On Tuesday, President Obama (as opposed to candidate Obama) will deliver a speech in Florida on the Buffett Rule. (We’ve now reached the point in the election cycle where the White House and the campaign are holding back-to-back events on the same issue). While Democrats will be emphasizing tax FAIRNESS, Republicans will be stressing that such talk amounts to tax HIKES. The top communications aide to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell fired off this email this morning: “How many jobs would the Buffett Tax create? How will the Buffett Tax ease the pain at the pump?”

With tax day just nine days away, what can the country expect from the government? The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports.

*** Here comes the Crossroads ad blitz: The New York Times reports that premiere GOP Super PAC, the Karl Rove-backed American Crossroads, is planning to begin its advertising blitz against President Obama -- probably this month. But Crossroads officials “said they would focus the bulk of the first phase from May through July, which they believe is a critical period for making an impression on voters, before summer vacations and the party conventions take place.” More: “Steven J. Law, the group’s leader, said the ads would address the challenge of unseating a president who polls show is viewed favorably even though many people disapprove of his handling of the economy. Basically, Mr. Law said, ‘how to dislodge voters from him.’” A Democratic polling firm found that, among independents it surveyed, Obama has a higher FAV rating than Romney even as these voters ideologically appear to be more Republican leaning. Democrats were on the wrong end of this problem both in 1984 and 2004 when the incumbent Republican president had a higher FAV rating with swing voters who seemed to be more sympathetic to the Democratic agenda.

*** Crossroads admits that Obama so far is winning the tax debate? Returning to our discussion above about the coming tax debate, the New York Times piece on American Crossroads’ ad blitz had the group implying that the White House is winning the tax argument -- at least for now. “Crossroads research suggests that Mr. Obama’s campaign has started to gain traction among critical swing voters by arguing that Republicans, including Mr. Romney, favor an ‘economic plutocracy’ in which middle-class voters can no longer count on financial security, even though they work hard and play by the rules. ‘His argument is: “The reason you feel bad is not because I’ve been an inadequate president but because the rules of the game are stacked against you,”’ Mr. Law said. Calling it a ‘dystopian vision,’ he added, ‘that narrative has some gravitational pull.’”

*** Gingrich calls Romney “far and away the most likely” GOP nominee: On Friday, NBC’s Alex Moe wrote that Newt Gingrich and his campaign march on -- but with fewer paying attention. And on Sunday, he admitted on FOX that Romney is “far and away the most likely” GOP nominee. He also said, per the AP, that running for president “turned out to be much harder than I thought it would be." And: "I do think there's a desire for a more idea-oriented Republican Party, but that doesn't translate necessarily to being able to take on the Romney machine.”

*** Santorum remains off the campaign trail: As NBC’s Andrew Rafferty noted over the weekend, Rick Santorum will not campaign today so he can continue to stay at the side of his 3-year-old daughter Bella in the hospital. "Rick Santorum will not hold any campaign related events on Monday so that he and Karen can remain in the hospital with their daughter Bella. The entire Santorum family is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of prayers and support," Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley said. Bella suffers from Trisomy 18, a chromosomal defect that claims the lives of most children born with it in their first year. The reason for her hospitalization this week hasn't been released. This, Rafferty adds, is the second time during the campaign that Bella has needed to be taken to a hospital. Santorum canceled events in late January after Bella was rushed to a Virginia hospital when she developed pneumonia in both lungs.

*** On the trail: In addition to Santorum, all the GOP candidates are off the campaign trail today.

*** Conservative groups begin their fire on Lugar: In advance of Indiana’s May 8 primary, the conservative group Club for Growth is going up with a new TV ad hitting Dick Lugar (for voting for the bailouts, tax hikes, and Obama’s Supreme Court justices) and supporting GOP primary foe Richard Mourdock, according to Politico. And the National Rifle Association is going after him with this TV spot, which states that Lugar “has become the only Republican candidate in Indiana with an ‘F’ rating from the NRA.” The ad then shows a photo of Lugar standing next to Obama.

*** “Stupid is as stupid does”: The day before Easter and the day after Passover began, longtime GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) fired off a tweet calling President Obama “stupid.” The tweet: “Constituents askd why i am not outraged at PresO attack on supreme court independence. Bcause Am ppl r not stupid as this x prof of con law.” (Grassley doesn’t hold a law degree, by the way.) He then added, “Possibility of peace and freedom for Syria gets more remote as PresO plays along w the farce of Kofi Annans negotiatios there Barack wakeup.” First Read has reached out to Grassley’s office for comment, but has yet to hear back. Grassley’s tweets came a couple days after Nebraska Senate candidate Jon Bruning attacked GOP primary rival Don Stenberg during a debate for following his daughter on Twitter. “‘I'd like to know why does a 62-year-old man want to follow a 14-year-old girl on Twitter,’ Bruning said. ‘She said, “Dad, that's kind of creepy.”’”

Hey Kirk..Dont get caught in the class warfare BS being spewed by guys like David etc who dont understand basic economic behavior. ... What about what Warren Buffet says about the top rate? Does Mr. Buffet understand enough?

Buffett is an Obama lapdog and vice versa. Now that the pipeline is squashed the oil will be shipped byy rail. And guess who is heavily invested in the railroad that will carry the oil. Warren Buffett you say? You win the kewpie doll. Crony capitalism at its worst.

Lets see how America feel about the wealthy in the election this fall ! it will be a case of class warfare for the survival of the middle class and workers of America ! when we vote and many of the issues the republicans use will be brushed aside . after the public sees and hears the same republican rhetoric as before , and realizes they have heard this song for do many years and have seen no results ! and the fact that republican robber baron , and destroyer of jobs is leading this charge is even better of the democrats !

As I said in the previous post that you probably ignored, the survival of the middle class will depend solely on the economy, jobs and high gas prices. As long as we will continue to see unemployment above 8% and Obama going down the same path with his failed policies, don't expect the people to be so generous and vote another 4 years of failure! I guess we will just have to wait and see til November, won't we?

8% unemployment isn't even close to the truth. Figured the old way, unemployment is at Depression era levels of 15% and up.

Not counting people once there unemployment insurance runs out is disingenuous at best, but actually more like a lie. Like our Consumer Price Index.

Both parties are a party to these lies however.

With Obama's desire, and its public knowledge, to get gas prices above $10.00/gallon,looks like it will happen. But what the heck if it destroys what is left of our economy and produces an inflation rate we won't be able to live with.

After all, Obama can use his foundations for a military take over to do just that after he declares Marshall Law.

It's public knowledge that the President doesn't control the price of oil or the price of gas at the pumps

Remember republicans hitting us on the head with that when we tried to say it was Bush's fault?

How is Obama building a milatry to take over when for the 1st time in modern history his polices are reducing the size of an unneeded war machine republicans built to take over two countries?

Maybe you are blind to the fact that republicans are funding an even bigger military empire & demanding a return & escalation of Cold War policies

      #156.1 - Mon Apr 9, 2012 6:26 PM EDT

Surely you are aware of republicans cutting funding to our veterans by 11 billion dollars, aren't you?

That takes away any ability our VA has of long term planning & efficient operation of the Veterans Administration which republicans always wanted to privatize

Guess you missed the report about how the FED can and does affect the prices of a gallon of gas.

It was also in the story that Bernanke is planning to use his power at the Fed to drive the price of a barrel of oil to $200.00/per barrel.

Who is Bernanke's boss? Do you really believe that Bernanke is acting on his own without instructions from Obama who wants the price of gas to reach $10.00/gallon to reduce our dependency on foreign oil.

You really aren't that gullible are you to believe the nonsense you are posting?

            what happened & Jim-372206:

No, Obama does not control the price of oil ... and he is not Bernanke's boss. No politician is. The FED is a privately owned, for profit, corporation. Bush, Clinton, Obama, Romney, nobody outside the FED, controls Bernanke. Every 12 years, I believe it is, the Senate gets to approve the FED chairman, but they DO NOT get to nominate him.

what: Where have you been news wise in the last few weeks ? the president and world leaders have agreed to dump billions of gallons of oil on the markets if the price of gas slows the progress of the world wide economy ! and make hording or not put it into production a dangerous bet by any company or investor ! and could be a corporate profit destroyer ! This could be a well deserved punishment for the oil companies ! and wall street speculator . and maybe even a price freeze is in order ?

Since you are so knowledgeable about Hitler and what he did, let me remind you that before he invaded a country, he not only signed an non aggression pact with that country, Hitler told the world that he wasn't going to invade that country.

So you are calling the tea party Nazi. That's funny considering that it's not the Tea Party that have created the foundations for a military take over of our Constitutional government. Its Obama and his democratic lap dogs.

That would be like calling the Koch brothers Nazi's when the are the model of what is wrong with corrupt broken capitalism & corporations writing our laws

... No I don't call anyone a Nazi. Hitler had his own sick agenda, among one being getting rid of liberal policies & democracy

When an entire state loses it's democracy because of a Tea Party govenor & hard right radical agenda that deprives people of voice & rights it's only natural & logical to associate it with what Hitler did to take over Germany's democracy

                  I need a paxil

Wow you really are uninformed aren't you? You make it so easy.

On December 31, 2011 Obama signed into law a military funding bill that gives the Military the Authority to detain indefinitely for any reason any American Citizen on American soil without having to provide that citizen with their Constitutional protection.

For you democrats who don't seem to understand the above, I will try and put into words you do understand.

Today, as a matter of law, the Military has the authority to invade your home in the middle of the night and drag you from it. Then they can detain you indefinitely without providing you with miranda rights or an attorney. The don't need a warrant to arrest you or a search warrant. They don't have to let you make a call. They don't have to tell anyone where you are. And if they so choose, they can put you before a military court that doesn't follow the constitutional protections that a civilian court must provide to you.

I believe I've named a few even though you only asked for one.

Doesn't really matter too much who gets elected. Your future, or people who are not retired like myself's future is pretty much set. Just like in a chess match, when a certain number of pieces are taken off the board the outcome is determined. If you have 1 or 2 pawns even ... less than I have, you are going to lose.

Our chess match is being played with finances. There's no way you pay off 16 trillion (not even counting unfunded liabilities in SS and Medicare.) no matter how much you tax the rich. Tax em 100%, fine. you're still done. Check mate, game over. Reset.

We're Greece in the making, just not there yet. Be interesting to see how that plays out. Could be we'll go back to sound financing and not promise everyone a free lunch, but more likely it will get real ugly with a lot of suffering to be had by all.

I have a particular beef with the radical right with their superior attitude. I seldon if ever have heard one beef concerning citizens lining up at Fema tables grabbing their free or low cost money every time a "natural disaster" occurs. Why do we have flood insurance for builders to build homes and pocket a profit knowing that the tax payer will eventually need to pay for flood insurance. Some homes have been paid for multiple times. Dont the 1% know when they buy a beach home in a hurricane zone eventually they will come with their hand out?

In 2008 we had the financial equivalent of an economic tornado. It is no different then that. Those "freeloaders" lining up at the Fema tables should be rebuilding their own home and using their own resources and not asking me for a handout.

                          Same logic applies.

Even if we have natrual gas reserves doesn't mean we should use them. Fossil fuels still burn they still cause pollution the environmental cost of using fossil fuels for another twenty years is far far too high

There is no cost effective, reliable source of energy to replace fossil fuels with. We will be producing most of our energy from fossil fuels for at least the next 50 years. Unless some new technology comes along like hydrogen fuel cells, we will be using fossil fuels much longer than that.

How many Landfills are there in this country where the waste gases are just getting burned off in to the air?

I don't think this will replace fossil fuels, but it can reduce the burden as this waste gas is scrubbed and burns clean.

Is it any wonder that our country is in such poor shape? Are people really surprised that we are $15 trillion in debt and counting just on the federal level? You people come on here and argue over Republican vs. Democrat as if that is the answer to our problems, neither party is EVER going to do anything but manage our decline. Both parties have implemented the same failed policies when it comes to our trade deficit, monetary supply, debt, taxes, regulations, wars. Yet when election season comes around they play this game and pretend that they are viciously fighting for you and the other side is just getting in their way. There was only one candidate this go round who proposed anything other than the status quo and people on both sides of the aisle did everything they could to convince people that Dr. Paul was a loon.

Obama took each families share of the national debt from $45,000.00 to $122,303.00 in 2.75 years when his never ending debit crises was created.

Gee, if he ever got off the campaign trail, he might be able to find some time to resolve the debt crises he created. oops, I forgot. He will need another vacations when he gets done campaigning.

By the way, you can't build an economy with debt.

It has nothing to do with Obama, the Republicans had the ability to force cuts when the debt ceiling was reached last year and they backed down. Neither party will ever make the decisions necessary to get our country back on track, they are pushing us toward chaos and they know it. Why do you think both parties are supporting laws and orders preparing the military and police forces for domestic uprisings?

You can call me all the names you want, but it still does change the fact that the eight indicators I mentioned in an earlier post point to the fact that Obama has created a foundation for the military to over throw our Constitutional Government.

If it wasn't for the fact that all eight indicators are a matter of public record, then maybe you would have justification for your behavior, rather than be an uninformed or paid Obama supporters.

This one needs to be copied and sent to everyone in your address book:

Obama has blamed everything from the instability in the Middle East to Republicans for the rising price of oil, but the reality is this:

the Obama Regime simply hasn’t focused on reducing our dependence on foreign energy. In fact, he did everything but kiss Brazil on the lips in a failed effort to become its “best customer.”

While the following represent only a small part of the Regime’s overall efforts to stifle new energy production, here’s a look at some of the key data points from the chart:

                                        • March 7, 2009 – ABC News says the White House is “closely monitoring” the expedited Solyndra loan project even as it was delaying new American energy production that would help make us less dependent on foreign energy. Gas is $1.94 a gallon.

                                        • June 27, 2009 - Obama urges the Senate to adopt House Democrats’ “cap and trade” national energy tax – the same plan O once admitted would cause electricity rates to “necessarily skyrocket.” Then-Minority Leader Boehner later said the bill “would raise electricity prices, increase gasoline prices, and ship American jobs to countries like China and India.” Gas is $2.50 a gallon.

                                        • March 31, 2010 – Instead of opening new areas to energy exploration and development, Obama blocks deep-ocean energy production on 60% of America’s Outer Continental Shelf. Gas is $2.80 a gallon.

                                        • December 1, 2010 – Obama re-imposes and expands the moratorium on offshore energy production. Gas is $2.86 a gallon.
                                        • January 2, 2011 – TIME reports that the Obama Regime issued the first in a series of regulations designed to unilaterally impose a national energy tax. Gas is $3.05 a gallon.

                                        • June 21, 2011 - The Regime opposes the House-passed Jobs & Energy Permitting Act that would unlock an estimated 27 billion barrels of oil and 132 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Gas is $3.65 a gallon.

                                        • November 8, 2011 – The Regime releases a plan for a five-year moratorium on offshore energy production, placing “some of the most promising energy resources in the world off-limits,” according to the House Natural Resources Committee. Gas is $3.42 a gallon.

I think this whole tax debate would go a lot better if the government was more responsible in it's spending. The GSA debacle is only the tip of the iceberg on government waste which Obama seems to care nothing about, additionally Obama is focused on higher taxes for millionaires which is inconsequential. Over the next ten years the extra taxes from the millionaires does absolutely nothing to right the deficit issue. Please make this poor excuse for a President go away soon.

GAO said that there is 180 billion in waste and duplication in that bloated incompetent federal bureaucracy. Obama promised to go through that budget with a fine tooth comb and yet he has fired no one and deleted not even a single agency. He is allowing some decreases but only through attrition - when people who are useless and unneceaary retire he doesn't replace them. Hooray for him!

The tax debate is based on a fallacy. It is based on the idea that the government "has to" spend some arbitrary amount of money in order for the world to keep on turning, and since they "have to" spend it, then they have to get it from somewhere. We are allowing them to frame the argument in a way that is totally untrue. If the federal budget were cut to meet revenue there would not be some economic collapse. There is absolutely no reason that a person, any person, should pay 50-60% of their income in some form of tax, I don't care if they make $10 or $10 billion dollars a year.

We have reached a point in this country where the majority of people in this country are receiving some sort of payment from the government, and they don't care who the government gets it from as long as they get what they feel they are entitled to. I think we need a total paradigm shift in the way that the government collects revenue. We need to abolish the IRS, and allow the government to be funded by tariffs and the states. This country was established as a group of states with a central government to act as a mediator, not an overlord. Allowing the federal government to fund itself is like appointing the fox to watch the hen house.

Still blindly voting along Party lines? It's an outdated tradition that no longer functions. Try thinking on your own, and vote for the best individuals.

Set everyone including theirs at that rate. Then determine from their minus 50% for deficit and 20 % rainey day fund what they can spend. Remove all duplicate and over lapping federal establishment and reduce their funding at the same percentage.

MSNBC don't worry about 'Tax Debates'! We, the people, will take care of the tax loophole, economic, employment, and inflation problems, along with the profiteering and manipulating criminal elements when we rid ourselves of the corrupt Washington Establishment, the status quo, and its financial supporters, and we are once again in control of our own government.

When that time comes mainstream media will no longer be the voice of the Elite few.

I just love the Progressives World View.

Only in their minds do you reward failure and punish success. Only in a Progressives mind do you believe that taking money from successful people and giving it to the poor will somehow end poverty.

If I stay an unmotivated scumbag, Never amount to anything, make sure I keep my income below poverty level, maybe make some babies I have no means to support, I get rewarded with paying little or no taxes, Welfare, food stamps, Medicare, Government subsidized housing, free cell phones, an almost endless supply of government bennies.

If I go to college and/or aspire to be self sufficient and successful and have pride in myself, I get rewarded with paying higher taxes, and possibly being tens of thousands of dollars in dept, or I spent my hard earned money to pay for school as I go. I get the wealth that I Earn through hard work taken away from me to be "Redistributed" by the Government to those less fortunate(sic) and didn't make the sacrifices I did/do to get ahead.

I'm responsible and work my butt off to feed my family and make sure they have a decent quality of life while some Welfare Queen pops out 14 babies through invitro-fertilization that the taxpayers paid for then the taxpayers end up having to give them $2000,00 a month for food, just for a start, and probably for the rest of their childhoods on top of paying for their health care, education, housing, etc.

I'm responsible and pay 10% of my paycheck for Health care for my family each month while some illegal immigrant runs to the local hospital to pop out a baby or the Democarats put us a Trillion Dollars in dept so that we can help pay for some other families healthcare while they don't pay a single penny in income taxes because they are "Undocumented". We end up with another U.S. Citizen that will be a burden on the Taxpayers for years to come while the parents collect welfare, etc.. and when the parents get caught being here illegally they'll cry because there child is a U.S. citizen and its "Not Fair" to deport them and expect "Amnesty".

Please explain how any one, whether they are Middle Class, Rich, or someone in between, who actually pays income taxes and receives no government benefits whatsoever, isn't paying their "Fair Share"?

Explain to us how you are being "Fair" to people expecting them to pay more in taxes when they are self sufficient, support themselves and there families, and pay there taxes, and have never depended on the Government for anything?

Please explain how you think taking money from people who earn it, to give to people that don't, making them dependent on the government, in any way makes you a better person?

If I sacrifice my free time and money sending myself through school to get ahead in life, and I get a better job with higher pay, why should I get punished with higher taxes to help support, and have to pay what someone else thinks is my "Fair Share", for the person who sits on a couch waiting for their next welfare check or Democrat created "Entitlement" program?

Why should I feel envious of someone who has more than I do when I am proud and happy with what I have earned and accomplished?

Seems the GSA held a conference in Vegas that only cost the taxpayers a merger $800,000 with Clowns, a year book, along with a number of other souvenirs they could take home. Oh what the heck, everyone needs a break from work and they were only following Obama's example. Go out on the campaign trail and then take a vacation.

You can't blame the Democrats though its not like they had alot of time. As soon as Obama took Office in 2009 the Democrats spent 13 months just on the Patient protection and Affordable care act. Then they spent the rest of 2010 on the Frank-Dodd Financial reform bill and repealing DADT.

Don't forget all the time they spent on the DREAM Act and Cap and Trade so its not like they had time to do anything like passing budgets or appropriations bills for the last four years.

Isn't there something like 27 House passed bills that have been sent to the Senate that have still not been brought up for a vote? What is it the Democrat controlled Senate is so hard at work doing and spending all there time on?

Its not like they are working on a budget for 2012.

                                                                              #176.4 - Mon Apr 9, 2012 11:18 PM EDT

I don't watch Fox TV or any other TV. Until this past year I hadn't owned a TV for over 22 years. I like to read or work on my novel. I will admit that I have a large screen TV I use as a monitor as I believe that paying for cable is a waste of money. How many channels can you watch at one time? Your paying for channels you will never watch and that just doesn't make sense to a man who was homeless for a while during one of the four times he was downsized.

It reminds me of the Affordable Health Care Act. You'll be paying for it starting in 2014, but won't be able to access its full benefits until 2024.

I can see that you are dodging the questions I asked. Why didn't Obama proposes his tax reform when he had the best chance of getting it passed easily through a democratically controlled Congress. After all, he did make it a major issue in his first campaign and promised it would be one of the first things he did.

I guess he was just too busy accepting a Nobel Peace Prize he himself said he neither earned nor deserved in his acceptance speech.

I'm glad that you pointed out that the Democrats had Control of the congress from 2006 to 2010. Guess that just proves that the democratic congress was just as responsible as Bush for the mess that occurred during those years.

We've been hearing so much whining from you democrats about how the republicans have been preventing Obama from accomplishing his goal, its a wonder why no one uttered a word about how the democrats where preventing Bush from accomplishing his goals. Oh that right, the Democrats help him to accomplish his goals.

                                                                              Dave and checkered

I can understand your hostility towards me. It must be very embarrassing for you to know that I know more about the man you support than you do.

You should read my post about the seven indicators that point out how Obama has created a foundation for the military to over throw our Constitutional government.

I made this suggestion to you because I already know you aren't aware of these indicators even though they are a matter of public record.

                                                                                #176.5 - Tue Apr 10, 2012 12:45 AM EDT

It reminds me of a joke I read recently which I will paraphrase, and do an injustice to. so I apologize to the original author whoever that might be.

Obama is riding through a neighbor hood and sees a girl with a box of kittens and orders the driver to stop

Obama walks up to the girl and asks how old the kittens are? The girl responds that they are about two weeks old, see there eyes are still closed, aren't they cute,

                                                                                there Democrats.

Obama is so thrilled and thinks it will be a great photo opp so he comes back the next day with Mass media in tow.

Again he asks the girl to describe the kittens to the reporters. She states that they are about two weeks old, and aren't they cute, there eyes just opened,

                                                                                There Republicans.

Obama, shocked asks the girl what happened, Yesterday you told me they are Democrats and today they are Republicans?

                                                                                The girl responds;

                                                                                "Yesterday there eyes were closed!"

                                                                                  #176.6 - Tue Apr 10, 2012 2:01 AM EDT

Oh wait my bad that would show that Obama is a radical.....MSNBC can't have any of that!
