VIDEO: First Read Minute: Jobs, Santorum strategy, and disclosure

NBC's Domenico Montanaro discusses March's jobs report, Rick Santorum's new campaign strategy, and Mitt Romney's tax problem.

The unemployment rate dipped today to 8.2 percent, down from 8.3 where it was the last two months. The economy added 120,000 jobs. But that was below the expected 200,000 jobs -- and those expectations will drive political coverage today.

Other stories we're watching and following up on:

Yesterday, Rick Santorum huddled with conservatives. His strategy seems to be the following:

1. Get Gingrich out, have him endorse Santorum and get all of his delegates to go to Santorum. Gingrich says that's not happening.

2. Get Texas to change its rules on how it allocates delegates, from proportional to winner take all. But Texas would need a waiver from the Republican National Committee to do so. And sources at the RNC tells us, there's little chance that will happen.

The other story getting attention today is -- once again -- Mitt Romney's taxes.

The Washington Post reported yesterday that not everything is laid out in his financial disclosure as it relates to investments with his former employer Bain Capital.

That sparked the Obama campaign to call for Romney to release more of his taxes. And they're encouraging people to Tweet Romney with the hashtag "Whats Romney Hiding."

The Romney campaign says it's done everything required by law and that this is a distraction from an Obama campaign that wants to do everything it can NOT to talk about the economy.

It's yet another sign of the general-election campaign having already started.

When will we see Willard's tax other returns?

What's he hiding? Daddy Romney had no issue with transparency...

Ohhh that's right, after he is crowned 'King' at the convention and there is no turning back...

Same thing with giving an interview out of his comfort zone aka Fox Noise!

Is it any wonder the more people learn about the MittWitt the more people dislike him?

Oh, please...the Fifth Circuit throws a tantrum and the GOP cheers.

75% of respondents to a Bloomberg poll believe the Supreme Court will decide on ACA based on ideology. There's a reason that the public does not trust the courts and it's because the Fifth Circuit pulled this stunt.

...or is the President not allowed to express his opinion?

The Romney campaign releases one tax return and the draft of another and calls that sufficient disclosure? Says it has done "everything required by law". Why not go above and beyond what is required? After all, he is asking for us to put him in the most important position in America. Shouldn't he be willing to disclose as much as past candidates (including his OWN FATHER) have?

Because we don't give two shiites what MSLEFTBC or Obama thinks he's entitled to see.

This disgrace of a network and the moonbats here in can deflect and distract all they want.

Obama's record of failure will be closely examined and finally aired in spite of a resistant media and regardless of Obama pleas for them to cover up his incompetence like he did this week at the editor's conference.

Simultaneously, Romney's record of success will be talked about over and over.

The choice will be clear and the decision simple aside from the Obamabot wackos.

What successes would those be?

Just a short list....

1. Giving a way his entire inheritance and rebuilding a net worth of over 250 million dollars.

2. Saving the Olympics which most people close to scene thought was a lost cause

3. Taking on a hopelessly democratic state from 5.3% unemployment to 4.7%. Taking them from the red into the black without raising taxes. Doing it all in a truly bipartisan way without demonizing and blaming the opposing party. Oh, and doing it for free not collecting one penny in salary.

4. Running Bain Capital, the premier capital investment company in the country and creating tens of thousands of net jobs in the process.

Got to tell you Rob I look at the polls and Obama is widening his lead in all the important states, and in all the polls even republican leaning polls. In my opinion here is Rpmney's problem he is not new, everybody knows this guy and that is his problem people have already made up their mind about him, even republicans rejected him as a candidate last go around in favor of McCain. He has to reinvent himself and that is a problem because one of his biggest negatives is the fact that he is always reinventing himself (you know he is seen as a lying pandering politician that is not to be believed or trusted, the Etch o Sketch man) he has to play against his own worst quality. I really think you need to brace yourself and start to wrap your head around the idea of Obama being the POTUS for another term, because Romney is getting weaker against Obama not stronger everywhere it counts outside the hardcore base such as yourself.

Let me see if i can counter:

1. Who cares about his silver spoon. That is not an accomplishment that affects anyone but himself.

2. Who cares about saving the olympics. What does that have to do with politics as they stand today?

3. He lowered the unemployment rate by less than 1% in his tenure as governor. Well than you should be impress with Obama's lowering of the NATIONAL unemployment rate by double what romney was able to do.

4. The nation is not a coroporation that chews up other corporations and spits them out for a profit.

Do you see how your arguments hold no water?

Was that you i saw under Romney's podium the other night?

Well if he is not the nominee then it gets even worse, the others stack up as total joke candidates against Obama, they all trail by double digit margins. Romney has to flip some voters to win, you think he will flip many democrats? You think he will win the black vote, the Latino vote, he is 20 points behind with women, and to be that far behind means that Obama is flipping republican women. Where will all these Romney votes come from to win a general election, heck he has not even buried his weak primary opponents yet and he has outspent them by huge ratios. He won't outspend Obama by those kinds of margins. I am just telling you Rob it don't look like Romney is the guy that can beat Obama in a general election. If he can't flip Ron Paul, and Santorum supporters how is he going to flip any democrats? There is just not much excitement about the prospect of a president Romney, not even among republicans.

Let me see if i can counter:

1. Who cares about his silver spoon. That is not an accomplishment that affects anyone but himself. How about his family, his church, his business partners, the government general fund via the taxes he paid (in the millions of dollars) - you asked for his successes. This one is undisputable.

2. Who cares about saving the olympics. What does that have to do with politics as they stand today? At the time pretty much the entire country cared. There's something called national pride and having the respect of other nations. Without Mitt stepping in our country would have been embarassed. Not that you care obviously being an Obama butt boy.

3. He lowered the unemployment rate by less than 1% in his tenure as governor. Well than you should be impress with Obama's lowering of the NATIONAL unemployment rate by double what romney was able to do. Obama has precided over the long level of 8+ unemployment in over 80 YEARS. Impressed? That is laughable!

4. The nation is not a coroporation that chews up other corporations and spits them out for a profit. Typical moonbat response. Even wallstreet Democrats are floored by the success rate of Bain Capital.

This is par for the course, and what we get from people like Romney. What is legal is not necessarily ethical. What's the problem? YOU, Romney and your "vulture capitalism" mentality -- that's the problem. Enough!

We need to return to the days of "doing our bit." Not evading the draft, not ripping off Medicare or our government when bankrupting companies, not destroying business and people's livelihood, understanding that successful companies and individuals should "pay it forward," and most of all paying your damn taxes.

Ha ok I had to come back for that Fiesty, I use "Big Hambo's" rolling papers, I get them out of old Cheech and Chong albums at garage sales.

Seriously though try this if you get a chance I make my ham glaze out of a can of mandarin oranges, and a box of brown sugar, just dump them together in a bowl and squish it all up real good. Then smoke with a white oak fire, the ham is on a rotisserie, the fire is off to the sides, not too much heat directly under the ham, keep painting the ham with the glaze every ten minutes or so, (put a tin foil drip pan underneath) smoke for 3 to 4 hours. Kosher Jews will risk the consequences and eat my ham!

Obama campaign is calling for more of Romney's tax returns? Sounds like whining to me. A sitting President should be able to run on his record and accomplishments instead of worrying about the opponents tax records. A sitting President only bashes an opponents personal data when they can't run on their own record.

I have never agreed that candidates should have to furnish their private tax records while running for any office. A personal financial disclosure as required is sufficient. We all know that Romney is rich and pays taxes mostly on investment income, like a lot of people, so what's the big deal.

Hi Sarge,

I can agree with you about not providing more information than the law requires.

So why have so many made such a big deal about our President’s tax returns when he was running and what was and is all the ongoing noise about his “long-form birth certificate” and the continued yammering for his school transcripts??

Have a good Easter weekend !!!

Hi Dennis,

I didn't care about tax records for any of the candidates. In fact I don't even know when that BS started, maybe this week end I will try and find out who first demanded that full tax records be released on Presidential candidates.

As far as those making a big deal about Obama's tax returns and "long-form birth certificate", I was not one of them. I would be more interested in one's school transcripts, both Kerry and Bush released theirs I believe.

Thanks, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful Easter as well. God Bless.

Bryan, can you give me a list of Obama's accomplishments as a Community Organizer/State Senator?

Well for one thing he got the Democratic nomination for president, something Romney can't quite wrap up even though the competition is very weak, much weaker than Hilary Clinton. Nobody is very excited at the prospect of president Romney, republicans already rejected him as a presidential candidate 4 years ago. The point is nobody cares what Romney accomplished in fact they would rather not talk about much of what he has accomplished, people just don't care much for the guy, even the people that endorsed him sounded like they were setting you up for a blind date with a homely girl.

Because it has been an embarrassment and they just want it to be over, they just want to pick Obama's patsy and get it over, that is why no "quality" republican candidates wanted in, when republicans begged them to run. They never liked Romney to begin with they don't mind sacrificing him.
