Mitt Romney voiced support on Thursday for women being allowed to join the storied Augusta National Golf Club.
A reporter shouted a question to Romney while he was working the ropeline following an event in Pennsylvania about whether women should be able to join the club, which is the home of the annual golf tournament, The Masters.
"Well of course," Romney said. "I'm not a member of Augusta. I don't know if I would qualify -- my golf game is not that good -- but certainly if I were a member and if I could run Augusta which isn't likely to happen but of course I'd have women in Augusta. Sure."
The question to Romney came after the White House said Thursday morning that President Obama supports women being allowed to join the course.
The line of questioning comes amid scrutiny of the club's policy in light of IBM's hiring of Ginni Rometty as its CEO. The CEO of IBM has traditionally enjoyed a membership at Augusta, where the Masters are being played this weekend.

Of all the important issues concerning women lately, (trans-vaginal ultrasounds, taking away funding for important health care screening, etc. ) who really cares about joining a rich man's country club? Mitt Romney and other Republican leaders missed real opportunities to stand up for women's rights when they ignored the vulgar remarks of Rush Limbaugh about Sandra Fluke, the acts of the states and congressmen wanting to take away health care rights of women and by removing long established laws. Republicans have already lost the vote of many women.
When you strip away all their Constitutionalist and free market rhetoric, the reactionary strain of conservatism today is about what it's always been about: Wanting to impose private "traditional" values on the public, namely the values of patriarchy and elitism. They must believe that somehow others enjoying rights and freedoms is a threat to their own way of living. Women are a threat, the poor are a threat, atheists are a threat, unions are a threat, Muslims are a threat, science is a threat, and a black president is a threat. Forget the fact that many of them are the power elite of this country with more collective wealth than they've ever had before. Without being in a constant state of fear that their way of life is being threatened, they simply are incapable of enjoying themselves. They define themselves by what they are against.
It's a private club. Ladies...go start your own.
Male Politicians are welcome at Augusta...although, your political influence gets checked at the door. Ike wanted a tree removed from the course, they just named the tree after him! ROFL
These private clubs are places where connections are made between powerful people. Don't tell me that business and politics never are discussed on the golf course, or that it doesn't make a difference in deal making that you know someone is a member of your club. This is what women are not being allowed to participate in. Who cares about naming trees?
we are not asking to join....it's politics.....BUT if the history of the club says they invite the curren CEO of their biggest sponsor IBM to join it will be interesting if they extend to the lady that currently holds the position
....and I should be able to join the New Black Panthers.
,'-D
Why are conservatives always angry?
now Mittens wants to trump women's rights???? lmfao.....Women in Augusta will never happen, and it is a PRIVATE course and they can mandate what they want....there are Plenty of courses for us gals to join.....nice try Mittens
As Groucho Marx said, "I refuse to join a club that would have me as a member."
Its one thing to say "If I were running Augusta I'd let in women", and quite another to say that he would force a private club to do it. Romney better not be for the latter, or he will lose any republican support he has.
That's a nice sentiment Mitt. And just like Augusta, I could care less what you think.
That remark will what, net you one vote?
I have a job, a nice house and a tennis club membership. I am NO WHERE near the 1% and i don't agree at all with the "99%"--where does that leave me? Oh, and who gives a rat's ass if women can play at Augusta--it's a private club with a private membership for people who mostly (gasp!) have WORKED for their money. How dare they enjoy it! Life isn't fair-get over it.
I want to know were MSNBCs article is on the racist comments of Rev Wright over the weekend? You know the man that Obama listened to for 20 years.
Oh wait my bad that would show that Obama is a radical.....MSNBC can't have any of that!
Of course, flip-flop Romney would make this outward, visible, superficial, token gesture,...it behooves himself and his campaign,...
....but we are all keenly aware of the GOP in general is conducting a concerted WAR ON WOMEN !!!
Any woman who votes for the GOP is setting the cause of women's rights back decades.
STOP THE GOP's WAR ON WOMEN !!!
Vote Obama/ Biden 2012.
WOW , HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO A CLOSET POLYGAMIST BISHOP ??? ; i mean , they believe a woman's place is to let their husband marry a bunch of wives , which goes against the words of JESUS CHRIST. and respond only when it's their turn to clean the house , OR MAKE MORE POLYGAMIST !!!!!!!!!!
Double standards suck. I can't tell you that I'm Black or my potential would likely look like other young Black boys without being accused of race baiting. But those same double standards cut both ways. Romney can't ignore womens' issues until the topic is Augusta and not sound elitist.
Mormons believe any worthy male can be given the priesthood and each is given specific duties. Romney's sacred duties allowed him to dodge the draft during the Vietnam War (putting faith before service to his country at the outset). And we want this yahoo in office? Black people were not allowed to join the Mormon priesthood until 1978, a good bit behind the Reverend Martin Luther King's times. Females are not allowed to join the priesthood even today, and are supposed to stay home and make more Mormon recruits, and do whatever their husband tells them to do--even letting the husband sleep with the nanny, which happens a lot, and tippy-toes around polygamy laws every night. He's as conservative as Carter.
"Heck, we aren't married! That's illegal. We're just fornicating."
Thank heavens! I was worried for a moment there. Any woman working in a White House Romney enters as a tourist better buy a chastity belt!
The Mormons have a Prophet, who is their version of a Pope. Anything that the Prophet(s) says is considered the Word of God. Remember, Romney believes all this. Here's a juicy racist quote from their famous second "Prophet", Brigham Young (they named a University after him). B.Y.: "You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind...and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. In our first settlement in Missouri...we knew that (blacks) were to be the servant of servants, so long as the Lord would permit them to welter under the curse (of Cain). If the white man mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so." Remember, Romney believes all this.
Hey Mitt, do you think women should be able to get into heaven by themselves or only when their husbands consider them worthy and call their new name?
Golfer or not, Obama is a free-spending drunken sailor, enjoying to the max the limelight and his inflated celebrity ego! Always taking maximum credit for things that he personally had little effort in actually accomplishing! He has added $6 trillion+ in national debt in 3 years, making goofy decisions time after time that make little or no common sense. Come on America! We need to say goodbye to Obama! We must make him live out the rest of his life giving so called 'fancy speeches' to liberal college campuses for $65,000 per hour, to help subsidize him and his family for lifetime CIA security costs as a vision of his personal future. He must be crushed in November by true freedom loving American voters who can see through this hopeless impostor that we ended up with for president! And let women join the club! And even make an attempt at wearing the green jacket.
