Poll finds Hispanics prefer expanded role of government

Latinos are going to be one of the most important groups to watch this election year -- if not the most important group -- as no other population has grown more in the U.S. over the last decade.

A new Pew Hispanic Center poll out Wednesday finds, as reported by our sister site NBC Latino:

- 75% say they prefer a bigger, expanded role for govt, much more than the general public,
- Less than 1-in-5 (19 percent) believes in smaller government, and
- Though 32 percent consider themselves conservative (compared with 34 percent of the general public), 30 percent say they are either liberal or very liberal, a higher number than the general public at 21 percent.

DEAR MSNBC, is that Hispanics, THE RACE (and then please tell me exactly how many races you are including when using this phrase) or THE DESCENDENTS OF A NATION?

I just want to know which pigeon hole you would like to throw people in today 'based on your reporting?' You know, because someone else types your stuff.

The demographics do not look good for the GOP in the future. Old, fat, white, evanglical and stupid is a shrinking demographic.

Mitt Romney has alienated Latinos, blacks, women, seniors with his embrace of Paul Ryan, auto industry workers, independents, unemployed, the poor and the middle class leaving him rich, white people to share his vision of the country which is for rich, white people.

Yes, I agree, the bigger the Government the better we will all be. This talking point of smaller Government was a talking point that President Reagan started and we all know how much expansion happened in the 1980s. So, don’t into the Republican argument of smaller Government. It’s a myth that will never happen.

So, let the Government grow and expand.

A Great point Jody. I'm hoping that after President Obama's next term, that we will see a women or another minority elected President.

While I understand your arguments that Romney may have difficulty winning the Hispanic vote and maybe the presidency, I wonder about what will happen in the House of Rep. contests (435 of them) and the Senate races (33 or 34 of them).

In 2010 the majority of voters chose Republican congressmen to make the House republican. Most voters voting for senators chose Republican senators, though not enough to take over the Senate. To date, and I know not the effort to find out daily, no news outfit, think tanks, bloggers, etc., is speaking about the congressional races. My guess is based on previous national elections is a Republican House and Senate and a Democrat president. Makes me wonder if its a case of prefering conflict in the government.

Thats like asking "Do I want my neighbor to pay my mortgage payment?" What a stupid question without explanation. Of course people want social security and medicare thats an incredible grasp of the obvious. The issue is who pays the bills. Do we continue the wealth transfer from the working poor, middle class and working wealthy to the wealthiest segment and growing everyday segment our seniors? Can we afford it? The budget gap over the next ten years for medicare alone is $8 trillion from Obama's own budget. Of course everyone would love to have the government give them something for free but what happened to personal responsibility or accountability and self reliance? Oh thats right those are dirty words to the current administration.

Exactly, anybody with a brain knows there is a role for government - especially for immigrants and minorities.

The GOP still doesn't get it: women and minorities far out number white male conservative republicans in this country. THE ONLY REPUB THAT HAS A CHANCE WILL BE A MODERATE!!! Get used to it!!!!!

There seems to be a bit of confusion with the polls. According to the poll numbers it seems most hispanics are conservative and yet they want big government. Now, that's a bit confusing.

So it looks like Mitt will get only 1% of the vote and Barack will get the other 98% leaving another 1% for the other parties candidates. That's good.

let's not forget that a number of Democrats ALSO make up the 1% and they will vote for Obama. And, with the dissatisfaction toward the congress, I think the Democrats will pick up a number of seats in both the house and the senate. People are tired of nothing getting done because of the GOP.

Damage123..........you again prove to everyone how racist and ignorant you are.

Talking about the Trayvon case less? Maybe. But it is still being talked about and it is far from being over. The fact that Zimmerman has now hired another attorney should be an easy enough indication to you about this fact. But maybe you weren't aware of this. Maybe FOX isn't reporting that to you. The fact that he hired another attorney indicates to me that he knows that he will be arrested and that he will need all the help he can get.

And why should Sharpton and Jackson or anyone else have to stay out of this or any other issue? I can only believe that the people having anything against Mr. Sharpton or any other civil liberty activist would be a racist white person.

If you are an example of conservatism, there should be no wonder why so many want no part of it.

I know you won't take my advice, but it would be better for you stop showing up here and took your ilk to some place more fitting of your idea about what America should look like. Perhaps the KKK has a site where you could shine.

The republicans defending Zimmerman are more concerned about protecting their gun laws than seeing justice.

They even have their attack dog, rush, out demeaning everyone he can.

Make up lies, attack and demean women, children and anyone else who speaks up for human rights, it is the republican way.

Republicans want you to believe that gun laws are more important than human rights. Unfortunately Treyvon was already born and the republicans could not care less about the already born and their rights.

Mittens panders to the voters? Come on, there is no greater pandering president than THE BARRY.

Let's see from past history of his administration, he told the gays that marriage was around the corner. What has he done to see this happens? All talk, no action?

He told the Latinos that immigration reform was just around the corner. So what does he do, deport more criminal aliens than any other president, while still talking about reform

He told the black community things will get better. So what is the unemployment rate for blacks today?

And he told the 1% that he going to take their money and redistribute it to others. That he will do if possible.

Barry panders to each group he addresses, but never produces.

Is there a red-blooded American who doesn't love tacos, for crying out loud!?

When you campaign in Wisconsin, you promote cheese and beer. In Louisiana, it's Cajun food, in the South it's barbecue, in Chicago, it's pizza and sausage... in the Southwest border states, it's tacos.

There is nothing offensive about reality. It's Willard's transparent attempt to buy votes that's offensive. And illegal.

You are the one who needs to STFU since you don't know W-T-F you are talking about.

There have been 2 forensic tapes proving Zimmerman is a lie, a medical doctor stating there is no way Zimmerman could have sustained a broken nose; and a witness who saw the incident.

Dr Martin Luther King would be 83 today.

He became a civil rights activist early in his career just Like Revs AL & Jackson. Rev Jesse Jackson was a lieutenant in Dr King's non-violent army out of which Rev AL was born.

FYI: Rev Jessie Jackson has brought hostages back home with a grenade on his side or an army behind or in front of him.

In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other nonviolent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and stopping the Vietnam War.

King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday in 1986.

Damage is one person who really should embrace the Affordable Care Act for his/her own benefit.

Pre-existing conditions (like whatever it is he/she has) are not excluded from coverage, and there is no limit on treatment.

We'd all be better off if Damage got the help he/she needs.

Sick.....................Yes you struck a nerve. I find it quite unnerving that people like you exist in this country. Your ignorance, racial bias and lack of concern for anyone other than a white person is disgusting. But after this post I will not allow you to distract my attention any further. Your self serving attempts for attention by posting such vile comments against other people will no longer be accepted by me. I refuse to allow you to take up any more of my day after this post.

The fact that you find me sickening is taken as a compliment. You see, I wouldn't want my thoughts to coincide with yours. You are a racist. Furthermore, the way you write and what you write proves you are either ignorant, delusional or both.

The simple fact that the NAACP ever had to come into existence is because of people exactly like you. The fact that it still exists is because of people like you. The fact that Mr. Sharpton and other civil rights activists are called upon to help the cause of another is because they get positive results more times than not and normally in a peaceful manner. But ignorant racist such as yourself don't like this so you try everything possible to fight against it.

You are a pathetic excuse for a person living in this country. you and others like you give this country a bad name.

Jailed Sharpton Plans Hunger Strike Over Bombing
      By JONATHAN P. HICKS
      Published: May 29, 2001

After nearly a week in federal jails in Puerto Rico and in Brooklyn, the Rev. Al Sharpton said yesterday that he would begin a hunger strike this morning to publicize the Navy bombing exercises on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques.

      http://www.nytimes.com/2001/05/29/nyregion/29SHAR.html

Ousmane Zongo’s uncle in New York joined Reverend Al Sharpton in calling for a special prosecutor to investigate the death.

Sharpton said he was looking into bringing members of Zongo’s family to the United States–tapping on experience in the Amadou Diallo case to navigate through the bureaucratic mazes.

Outrage is mounting in New York following the death of Zongo, who was killed in a scenario strikingly similar to that of Amadou Diallo. Diallo was shot to death on February 4, 1999 in a hail of 41 bullets. Both men came to New York from West Africa in search of a better life. Both were shot dead by police. Both were unarmed. Both had no criminal record.

      http://www.democracynow.org/2003/5/27/as_outrage_mounts_in_new_york

The Rev. Al Sharpton and several hundred protesters gathered outside police headquarters in Lower Manhattan, then blocked traffic entering Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge. The protest was one of several across the city.

The protesters expressed outrage over a Queens judge’s decision on April 25 to acquit the three detectives — Michael Oliver, Gescard F. Isnora and Marc Cooper — over the November 2006 death of Mr. Bell, who died in a hail of police bullets outside a nightclub in Jamaica, Queens, hours before he was to have been married.

Racial labels mean nothing to me personally, james. I pointed out that President Obama has Irish ancestry because some people don't understand how inter-related we all are in this country.

In fact, Barack Obama, Dick Cheney, Warren Buffet, Robert Duval and me (!) among thousands of others all share a common ancestor, a Frenchman named Mareen DuVal. Imagine that! Obama and Cheney are related! I hope our great great whatever grandfather isn't rolling over in his grave, wondering why his descendants can't work together for the good of a country that gave him a bright new start.

Are Feisty and Bev the same person? It would seem they are. I waded in, after reading the comments from the Bev/Feisty and their fan club, I realized that if they are representative of liberal intellectual discourse then it is no surprise that they espouse the views and opinions they share, they make intelligence and liberal an oxymoron.

Insults, name calling and hyperbole are all they have to offer. Woebetide anyone not sharing their tiny world, like the bad-girls cliques in High School, they surround anyone not of their clique and attack them. Feral dogs display more intelligence and courtesy than the clique that dominates this discussion.

Foul and filthy mouths and tempers, and somehow, they think that they hold the sin qua non of opinion and reason. If they weren't so prevalent and so obnoxious, they could be pitied. They are mildly amusing and very predictable. Nothing original, just endless parroting of talking points, said points coming from a script which they injest and regurgitate ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

The Obama administration has addressed illegal immigration with the following multistep plan.

1 - Made the politically correct term for "illegal aliens" to be "undocumented immigrants"

2 - Granted Aunt Zeituni Onyango citizenship, after she ignored a judge's order to leave the country

3 - Granted Uncle Onyango Obama a get-out-of-jail free card, which was used to be released from being held by ICE, even though he is in violation of a deportation order from 1992.

4 - Issued a presidential order which granted backdoor amnesty to as many as 300,000 illegal aliens.

5 - Filed lawsuits against every state attempting to legally address the illegal alien issue

6 - Created and proliferated a lie that they are deporting more illegal aliens that any other administration

Why do we keep voting against our best interests? The countries at the top of the happy society lists are all Social Capitalism societies. Capitalists with social justice at a level that no one falls through the cracks and gets ignored. They have Universal Healthcare and Pensions and good paychecks and collect enough taxes to pay for all the benefits they ALL enjoy. The Republican party wants to take us backwards when it comes to social issues. Latinos are very smart voters. Having experiences from two different countries and cultures, they realize you need a strong government along with a strong private sector to have a strong economy and social justice. Nothing else works. Obama 2012.

The people who suggest that we consider taking some of our political ,social reforms off the successful reforms off other countries ,are not saying anything like let other countries rule us and those who claim so are using national pride to convince us not to consider better or fairer ways to solve problems. Good ideas come from anywhere. They are not exclusive to any particular place. Many of the older nations have learned by their mistakes and we would be foolish not to do so,but they have also solved problems and we would be amiss not to try following their attempts .It is foolish to repeat experiments if they are shown to have problems unless we can solve them .

I totally agree, listoire. In my experience living in the Middle East and Asia for many years, it is apparent to me that those countries which close themselves to outside ideas are far less adaptable and competitive than those which use best practices from around the world.

We Americans are not doing everything best. China is developing an infrastructure that is far more modern and efficient than ours. In order to compete with an ancient and powerful culture that has vast resources and a much larger population than ours, we are going to have to do a LOT better.

China probably will not become the leader of the world, like America was. Why??? Two reasons, one economical in nature, the other, more moral. Economically, China cannot sustain its current growth. For one thing, it can not continue to grow at more than 6% a year proportionately and relative to growing inflation. In addition, China is massively overpopulated and needs a massive reduction in population to be sustainable. Because of its huge population, China cannot hope to spread prosperity among the majority of people; even with rampant poverty here in America, most families have a television and a telephone. Tens of millions of Chinese cannot. China may outgrow us overall, but it cannot hope to achieve the diversity and personal prosperity that the US has for at least another decade or two, and that is ample time for a comeback. Not to mention their growing investment bubble and balance sheet stuffed with bad loans...

Secondly, China is not an open nation. It is more open that during the 70s, but nowhere close to America or Europe. Economic success stems not only from massive investments but individual freedom and government accountability. China is a place of crony capitalism, and the government controls its population with an iron fist, not as tough as the steel fist of the 60s, but still. Only until the Chinese Communist Party opens the nation to a more democratic nation, China cannot hope to achieve true prosperity. I do not mean to be jingoistic or overly optimistic, but China has a long way to go. And I believe that America is starting to work hard again. We also have a long way to go, but I still have faith. And that is all we can have right now.

Does anyone watches the " Ed Show"? , Current Tv, Maddow, Bashir...Anyone thinks these people are telling the " truth and NOthing but the truth"? If you believe they do, then no wonder a majority of the populace in this country are so abyssmally ignorant of politics in general, ascribing good intentions only to their own party's politicians who never, never lie or strech the "truth".

I watch them. I know that they are not 100% truthful, but sadly they are the best (besides the moderate CNN) and are close to the truth. I wish we had laws advocating less partisan and more neutral media coverage, but alas, this is a democracy. Well, all we can do is make the best of it. Nowadays, it seems that liberalism is the truth, as rational-minded conservatives who are willing to compromise is dead and has been superseded by radical conservatism. It ain't perfect, but it's all we got.

      Romney on immigration:

"I've always been for immigration. I've never been for immigration. My dad was a Mexican; did I mention that? Illegal immigrants should self-deport. But not those working on my properties; we need those ones. But only after I'm done running for office. Then I can have all the illegals toiling away on my lawn as I want. Before then, I've never been for them. But if they can vote, I've never been against them, either. So, as I've always clearly said, I know how to put our illegal immigrants to work. I've created guzillions and guzillions of jobs for illegal immigrants. I've even bought companies and shipped them overseas, so illegal immigrants who might want to self deport could have a job to go back to. That's the kind of leadership you'll get from me."

Oh, the hypocrisy of the Republican party!

They're against illegal aliens unless they are cutting their lawn or raising their kids (at a cheaper rate than an American landscaper or nanny).

They're against abortions until their mistress needs one.

They're against tax cuts for people who need them, but wealthy corporations can have all the free money they want.

They're against stimulus spending but happily hand out enormous stimulus checks in their districts.

They vote against their own ideas because the angry black man is now proposing it too. God forbid a democrat should be the one to make one of their ideas successful.

They rail against the bank bailouts, but supported them as they were happening.

They whine about putting people back to work, yet vote against policies that would do just that. They would rather keep their own constituents jobless than see Obama be successful.

This list goes on and on...

James - I was not making a racist comment about Obama. I love Obama and what he is trying to do. I should have put the term angry black man in quotations. I personally do not feel that he is angry enough. I love it when he gets fired and feel disappointed on the occasions when fails to show how passionate he is about key issues. I live in Houston, Tx. I work in a bar that caters to the upper middle to upper class. I hear this term all of the time from the rich white people that I serve beer to.

I detest the fact that republicans say that the democrats are out to destroy the middle class when it is the republicans who are voting against bills that will put people back to work. Don't mention Keystone either as the pipeline is unnecessary. Obama has tried to put our citizens back to work in other areas, yet like I said, republicans would rather keep their own constituents jobless than let recovery happen on the democrats watch.

With that being said, I never said that all democrats were saints either. I know they have their hypocrites too. They just aren't as bad as the republicans. There are good republicans out there. I do believe that many do care, however, they don't work at the national level. At the national level, they are trying to out zealot each other.

We are just asking for fairness. But all the republicans have got is lies and vaginal probes and they plan on sticking it to us one way or another.

The republicans have voted for the Ryan budget and that means taking from everyone and especially the poor and even veterans to pay for more tax cuts for the rich.

Republicans would have you believe it is more important to give tax cuts to the richest than feed the poor in our own country. After all the people did commit the crime of being born just like the pretend christians claim that they want.

Because democrats and President Obama want to increase the tax rate on the wealthy by 4 percentage points, the right calls it "class warfare". Those who have engaged in class warfare are republicans who have waged a war on the middle class and the poor since Reagan with the reverse Robin Hood scheme. What's beyond me is how so many middle class and poor conservatives accept having their own checks diminished to give to the rich. I fully support the notion that people can make as much money as they can but I also expect that those who have much share in the burden of keeping this country strong economically. Without a strong middle class, everybody loses eventually even the rich.

Yesterday a conservative posted about NASA and how President Obama doomed NASA, eliminated good paying jobs. Really? It never occurs to them that lack of revenue doomed NASA, eliminated good paying jobs. The GOP has "starved the beast" for 30 years and now everyone wonders why we don't have an ongoing space shuttle program. According to the GOP lawmakers "we're broke"; we are not broke but we cannot continue as we are either. What needs for our country do we eliminate to pay for rocket ships? I am a big fan of the space program and want to see us continue but I am a realist. It's like this folks, if WE are unwilling to pay higher taxes, we cannot afford multi-billion dollar space programs. It's that simple.

        Jody,

You state that you are not understanding about the conservative middle class. I think what is beyond belief that you think that JUST because a person makes more money they should give more to the government. The government has proven time and time again that it can't handle its finances. What most people who pay taxes can't understand is how nearly 1/2 of the rest of population doesn't pay any federal income tax.

Ever heard of the old saying "great power comes with great responsibility?" Well, the same applies to the rich. The rich have more power because they have more money by which to influence the government through lobbyists and such, so they ought to have more responsibility for sustaining this nation via taxes. And I don't care if the government can't manage its finances; people still have to pay taxes. Just because the government may use the money in ways you don't like doesn't allow you to stop paying taxes. So stop being a complainer and accept it. The rich have gotten fat off of the tax cuts that have been fed to them, and it is time they pay their fair share. Most pay 15%, less than what many Americans pay. So they should pay more. How conservatives can vote for trickle-down policies that widen the gap between them and the rich is a matter of psychology. And most of the so-called 47% who don't pay are either too poor, or unemployed, or on Medicare and/or Social Security. Some are cheapskates, but not all of them, and definitely not half. And I'll bet corporations are among those who don't pay, like Exxon which received a tax refund.

        Freshiee,

How easy to lump ALL rich people together and assume that they all pay 15% and then in the same comment say that "some" of the bottom half don't pay because they are cheapsakes. When will the left realize that everyone has to pay into this system to make it work, both those that are rich and those that aren't rich. The liberal left always wants to use that same mantra of one example of a big company that doesn't pay taxes or a rich person that only pays 15%. What about the remaining wealthy people that pay far more than 15% or what about all the corporations that do pay taxes? You constantly dismiss and defect the fact that nearly 47% of the population don't pay ANY federal tax. I hate to break this to you, but if you are only relying on the rich to subsidize the remainder of this country you are in for big trouble.

Did not say they were the majority of all who recieve. Just that the majority of the minority is on some sort of government aide or program. That is not a secret or a made up fact. You will agrue it anyway, probly. Based on a study by Barna, African Americans by numbers (population)are on more government assitance that any other race. Whites (as you say) represent the largest race (by population). So thier numbers will be higher because there are more of them. But based on population and percentages, you are missing the big picture. Funny math seems to be the lefts only hope.

            #8.4 - Wed Apr 4, 2012 1:26 PM EDT

No, MRWSR, funny math is not the left's hope but it seems to be what the right uses constantly. I know what you wrote, I read it and yes, you said the majority of the minority. However, in your efforts to slant the conversation to disparage the minority as being lazy, no goods (that is what you were doing).   The article itself is discussing the size of government not just the size of social safety nets. Government is not just social safety nets. I merely pointed out that it is wrong to suggest that only the minorities receive aid. I believe government can and should be the size necessary for the population and the global connection; it doesn't matter if that is large, small as long as it is smart and meets the needs of this great country. BTW, you should use spell-check, it would make your arguments more credible.

kr, well said. Most people, when asked about specifics, do not want the size of government decreased. The trouble is the specifics are rarely asked. Go to any GOP townhall meeting and see if a constituents asks what programs will be cut--they don't ask, they just buy the government is evil argument until they discover that Medicare and Social Security and Government-run programs and GOPers like Paul Ryan want to eliminate them and privatize them--you're on your own, seniors.

Since Ronald Reagan began it 30 years ago, the GOP has succeeded in blaming Government for our troubles while starving government in the process. The far right of the GOP has always hated social security, medicare, medicaid--hated all social safety nets. Thanks to Reagan, and Bush and Bush, now many republicans beat that same drum. What did the GOP do? They cut government revenues through constant tax cuts mostly benefiting the wealthy and added massive debt to the mix and by doing so they make those programs a larger percentage of the budget then cry about how much of the budget goes for those programs. The GOP passed an unfunded Rx program for Medicare and then yelled about how Medicare is going broke. The GOP has no problem spending multi-billions on the military industrial complex, not to mention starting two unfunded wars, yet they yell about the massive debt and demand cuts to education, infrastructure and, of course, those social safety nets.

If Rubio is chosen as Romney's VP mate, it will be astounding; the anti-Latino comments that will be filling this board.

The GOP and its supporters have no problem demonstrating their racism, but you're not going to see Obama supporters making anti-Latino comments about Rubio if Romney chooses him. There are plenty of negative things to say about Rubio without bringing his Cuban ancestry into the discussion.

Obama supporters believe in an inclusive nation where everyone plays by the same rules and gets a fair shake. We support voter's rights, decent and affordable healthcare, public education and job training. Those policies are beneficial to Latinos and everyone else too. We understand that in order to help this country be a vibrant, competitive nation, we need to strengthen the middle class and give the poor the opportunities to be self-sufficient. That helps the wealthy as well.

Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants, who tend to vote Republican. Even assuming he is chosen by Romney, his views on political issues won't necessarily be the same as those of other Latino-Americans who live in other parts of the country.

Rubio said it gave his parents the right to live out their lives in dignity. At the time he thought the programs should be expanded as he saw the value in his own family. Beautiful speech.

How does a strong and vibrant economy help the wealthy, MRWSR?

Just for starters, imagine this scenario: The American worker becomes trained and educated to make our population the most technologically advanced and productive working force on the planet.

Why not? We have a young, vibrant and diverse work force that can and should be on the cutting edge in science and technology. We attract the best and the brightest from all over the world because we have the best universities and we are the land of opportunity.

We won't have to send jobs overseas because we can produce more innovative products and services here. We will have high employment, which leads to a wider tax base. As more people are employed in better-paying jobs, consumer spending--which is nearly 70% of our economy-- increases, making our companies more profitable.

The need for food stamps and welfare drops off.

Everyone benefits WHEN THE MAJORITY IS ECONOMICALLY VIBRANT.

Not so when only the top tier can afford to educate their children, have decent healthcare retire in security.

The other way, where only the wealthy have opportunity, is the way of a third world country.

MRWSR, false argument. No one is talking about 80-90% tax rates on the wealthy. Good grief, that was Eisenhower's day but even then that was not the actual tax rate the wealthy paid. The highest rate today is 35% and because of the loopholes and where the wealth is placed, Mitt Romney paid 14%. All democrats are talking about is raising the highest rate to 39.6% as it was during the Clinton years; or a 5% surtax on incomes above a million dollars that cannot be loopholed out of paying. Mitt Romney earns $57,000 per day and pays 14% tax rate while people who earn $57,000 per year pay about 20% depending on deductions for children, etc. I'd suggest that anyone who argues that Romney is paying his fair share of taxes needs to sit down and figure out their own income and what rate they pay because I'm guessing that most FR posters are paying a much higher rate than Romney and taking home a lot less income.

Screw that.... someone has to loose sweetheart or there can't be any winners! Thanks, Jody, for your excellent response to MRWSR.

Too bad facts and reason are lost on some people.

It benefits the country as a whole, even the wealthy, when the wealthy pay taxes at a higher rate than the middle class. Tax revenues are the source of government funds to build roads, bridges, airports, schools, pay down the debt, and maintain our military might. The lower the tax revenues, the less the government has to spend on services that benefit all of us.

When the vast majority of Americans--the 99%-- can afford to participate in our consumer-driven economy, everyone benefits. When middle class tax rates are low, we have more disposable income that we can use to spend on consumer goods and services.

The wealthy are too small in numbers--1%-- to be able to buy enough consumer goods, like appliances, clothing, cars, furniture, etc. to keep our economy humming. They might stuff themselves like pigs and buy top-of-the-line everything, but they can't buy hundreds of thousands of cars and refrigerators every year.

Business owners make more when they sell more. They sell more when there are more middle class customers with disposable income to buy their products and services. It's simple economics.

Is economics no longer taught in public school?

The saving grace of the democratic system is that the 99% also have 99% of the votes.

Let's use that power to re-elect the man who works for us. :)

Too bad facts and reason are lost on some people

How can you really type this, when you use the number 99%. Was not true when it started and sorry to say is still not true. Not true.

Here is a thought... how about folks get a job and strive to the ends you describe in your scenario.... instead of playing the everyone wins and no one is the looser, and the government somehow owes me the right to free stuff and all the entitlements I can imagine. Screw that.... someone has to loose sweetheart or there can't be any winners! Those that choose not to be self sufficient and wait around for government handouts should get a boot in the arse and nothing more! If you are indeed incapeable of supporting yourself because of a legitimate ailment then by all means I will be happy to help you out, cause that's the right thing to do. However if you are able bodied and just damn lackadaisical and lazy to provide the bright future you described because you think everyone is a winner and you are owed a happy ending......NO... NOT GONNA HAPPEN! That is when you are classified as a LOOSER in my book, deserving nothing for your efforts of nothing! The constitution guarantees this.....life liberty and the pursuit of happiness! key word being pursuit....get off your dead arse and help yourself to some happiness, but don't expect that you are owed anything...cause your NOT!

Read my words. I'm not advocating government handouts! I'm advocating an economic system where Americans get first dibs at the jobs, not the Chinese. I'm advocating a system--which is the way this country is supposed to operate-- where your pay is based on your performance, not a system whereby the heads of Fortune 500 companies take home an average of TEN MILLION dollars a year in salary and benefits, even when their businesses are bleeding red ink. Even when they've made crappy decisions that have resulted in the layoffs of thousands of American workers.

Here is a thought. How about if Americans start hiring other Americans instead of shipping our jobs to Asia? How about if Americans stop buying cheaply-made Chinese crap at WalMart and buy American-made products, even if it costs a little more?

The government owes all of us our Social Security because we paid for it! We pay our taxes and we want our government to spend that money wisely, not throw it away on useless wars like Iraq that did NOTHING for anyone except Blackwater and Halliburton.

"Someone has to lose or there can't be any winners"?? That's an illogical and damaging economic and political philosophy that is downright un-American. You need to try living in a place where that IS truly the case and maybe then you will appreciate this country and the opportunities we have that make us different from the rest of the world. Your negative viewpoint is defeatist and unpatriotic. I have lived in several third world countries and I kissed the ground every time I came back home. I will fight to stop defeatists like you and GOP purveyors of greed and lies from destroying my home as long as I have breath in my body.

You and people like you are the lazy ones. And you're selfish and short-sighted to boot. It's easier to tear down this country and the people who disagree with you than it is to inform yourself of economic reality and actually do something constructive with your life. It's easier to let Fox and Limbaugh do your thinking for you.

Ignorance won't be bliss for long, my friend.

Seems I have heard that story so many times before since I came to this country some time ago, yet we still have the same problems now that we had many years ago. Politicians run their campaigns on the back of the " downtroden, marginalized, poor, minorities, middle class, old, young, you name it. We have spent millions, billions, trillions on all of those people, and ....what has happened, where did the money go? Were any of these groups helped at all? What do we have to show for all the money spent on them? We should have seen some improvement in their status but no they are still here and will never go away because our politicians right/left want it that way, how else are they going to win polical office if not on the back of all those " poor, downtroden, marginalized minorities...?

kay -- another opportunity for some dialog.

CEO pay and performance pay. Can you describe how you would measure a CEO to determine the proper payment?

Would you place celebrities and athletes in the same category as a CEO? From Forbes last year: The men and women on our annual Celebrity 100 list--the most powerful people in the entertainment business this year--earned $4.5 billion over the last 12 months by starring in films, playing basketball, walking the catwalk and more. Lady Gaga made $90M.

Regarding Social Security. Without some sort of reform our children and their's will not get what they put in. The latest tax gimic from washington caused the SS fund to not receive 2% of what was expected. We need to stop doing things like this.

Spending on wars was bad, not sure why you mentioned two companies as i imagine there are hundreds that profited handsomely. But wasteful spending is certainly not limited to war. How about the money spent on duplicate government entities as reported last year: For instance, the GAO says the government could save up to $5.7 billion annually by addressing potentially duplicative policies designed to boost domestic ethanol production.

Regarding winners and losers. Would you advocate that everyone can be a winner? Is this possible? One way may be to put more emphasis in helping those on the lower economic scale rather than trying to tear down the successful.

Fox and Limbaugh clearly have their views, probably biased but is that any different than MSNBC and Maddow? I prefer to think that no news organization lies intentionally. The latest NBC failure in the Martin case notwithstanding.

You have got to be kidding me! That's like saying it's ok for me to take some of your money cause you got more than I do! That is so ridiculous... Do not punish someone with higher unfair tax rates simply because they have more than you do! There you go again.... expecting to get more for less, that is a flawed system. You are not owed anything... if you want more... go get it, don't take it from someone simply because they have it and you don't! Where I come from..... that's stealing or re-distribution of wealth as the left likes to call it!

No, it's like saying that those who have profited handsomely by ripping off others should pay their fair share too, like Romney and his corporate raider buddies who got rich off the pensions of workers they displaced, and who pay less in taxes as a percentage of their income than you and I do.

It's OK for me to take you to court to try to get my money back if you cheated me out of it. I'm tired of paying for corporate welfare and subsidizing Big Oil.

You've been duped into supporting white collar thieves to your own detriment. I believe in liberty, equality and justice for all. I'm not going to support corporate fatcats stealing from me or my country.

You probably defend Bernie Madoff and anyone else who's stolen a bunch of money because you've been brainwashed by the GOP into believing all wealth has been earned fairly through hard work. What a lie that is.

james, many companies pay their CEO's fairly in relation to their other workers. It's up to each company to determine just compensation. I do not support the insane salaries of celebrities and athletes either. Our culture worships materialism above everything else.

I don't believe 'everyone can be a winner' but I do believe everyone deserves a system that gives us a fair shot at it. That's a founding principle of this country.

How do you figure NBC is a loser in the Martin case?

However KayBee that is not what your original post said....You plainly said the wealthy should pay more than the middle class! You said nothing about criminals who are ripping people off and the likes....and while there are some people who have ill gotten gains that should be dealt with.... the average wealthy person got that way one of two ways..... inheritance... or hard work. Should those people be subjected to your unfair tax laws? Because anyway you slice it... if you have one group who is mandated to pay a higher rate than another group....that my friend is not liberty, equality and justice for all... as you stated you strongly agree with! I believe that it is you that has been brainwashed.... into believing that all rich people are bad and they got rich cause they stepped on the little guy....sounds like something you should probably work on. There is no conspiracy against the poor folks....most of them are less fortunate because they choose not to pursue wealth, (with the exceptions being as I stated in a prior post, those who are physically not capable of providing because of legitimate illness or injury)....and why should they.... its much easier for them to depend on the socialist system handouts of the current administration and bitch about rich people and how they stole their money and happiness!

BTW... I am in no way shape or form RICH....Just saying before you flame me for that...lol far from it... but I am happy with my current state at this point, and I will strive to better myself in all of my endevors. I will not set by idle and depend on anyone to take care of me or mine, I will provide and protect for me and mine with every breath I have. I don't need the government to tell me what's good for me... and I don't need then to take care of me!

JustAnotherVeteran: You are attempting a discourse with someone who has completely bought into the rhetoric. Facts are immaterial. The US has the highest corporate tax rate on the planet, the liberal mind is incapable of understanding what that means. They condemn all corporations, they condemn capitalism without understanding the difference between capitalism, crony-capitalism ( the program currently in place in this country) and socialism. They demand a bigger government because they have been taught to rely on the government for all their needs.

This is indeed brainwashing and it is pervasive throughout the educational system. Folks espousing the progressive doctrine do not understand that there is a middle road and that the true role of government is not to be all pervasive and all powerful. They can't help it, they are either too young to understand self reliance and autonomy or else they believe that welfare from cradle to grave is the only way to go.

I personally want to thank you for your service to our country. The liberals do not understand sacrifice or honor or willingness to uphold the Constitution. They do not understand the value of the Constitution nor do they fully appreciate what a remarkable document it truly is.

                Well stated MyGirl1....

Most folks refuse to see that government in its current state is what has driven our legitimate corporations to outsource productions. They were given two choices... move your business to a place you can afford to continue to do business.... or go out of business! While I hate to see them outsource I can't really fault them for doing what was right by themselves to continue to operate and making the hard choice to move.

Now here is a novel idea....

If the incredible corporate tax rate were removed, and say maybe an incentive put in its place to benefit that corporation for doing its business here in America, where I am sure they would rather be and operate since it is their country to.... maybe... just maybe we could stop the corporate outsourcing of American jobs. And get our industrial and technological corporations to come home! Where did I hear this... OH yeah... it was from those loony guys in the middle right. "The Party of NO" I think is what they are wrongly labeled now days... as we all know the real party of NO refers to the left, that which has come up with NO budget plans in almost 4 years... JUST SAYING!

Guess you don't understand the concept of paying for something. The government isn't doing ANYTHING for free. Those 'benefits' you crow about are paid for with tax money.

What do you think taxes are for? Also, do you want the government in your bedroom, your body, telling you what to think? Liberals claim they don't want republicans controlling their uterus, telling them what religion to follow, etc. so why can't you understand not wanting government in your life?

On the books, the U.S. has a high corporate tax rate, yes. But the effective tax rate paid by most major corporations is much lower:

My goodness, what an angry person. Self-righteousness is often an indication of either profound insecurity or a rigidly dogmatic and inflexible mindset that broaches no contradiction or counter opinion.

Narcissitic personality disorder manifests itself via anger, insults and self-righteous indignation. People unfortunate enough to be so afflicted generally don't respond well to counseling or other interventions since they never admit that they are wrong and when confronted they lash out and attack rather than engage in anything resembling introspection or coherent thought.

You know Feisty... I have seen some well thought out posts from you... that I have to admit, have made me think a time or two. However I find that the majority of your posts are nothing more than a couple lines of flame.....basically because the persons comment does not line up with your left leaning opinion, and I respect your right to having your opinion Feisty, that's why they call it your opinion.....However when you stop by to flame someone and "dismiss" them without having anything relevant to contribute to the conversation it reminds me why I don't lean to the left.....you guys don't have any problem calling bullsh*t on someone Else's contributions, but you rarely have a contribution to put on the table. Maybe that's why the majority of your posts get collapsed by the community.... just not a lot of substance there most of the time.... which is terrible, I believe you could contribute so much to the conversation, as you seem to be educated and quite knowledgeable. Just my opinion.....have a wonderful evening!

kay (10.20) -- referring to the edit job the network did on the 911 call.

NBC's "Today" show ran edited audio last week that appeared to reveal Zimmerman saying, "This guy looks like he's up to no good ... he looks black."

But a transcript of the 911 call showed that Zimmerman actually said, "This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or he's on drugs or something. It's raining, and he's just walking around, looking about."

The 911 handler responded, "OK, and this guy -- is he black, white or Hispanic?"

                  "He looks black," Zimmerman replied.

Agreed James.... It would appear that the MSM's liberal usage of "sound bites" and creative "editing" may have played a big role here! However there are still a lot of things that don't add up just yet. I still can not come up with a scenario that justifies the use of deadly force. I just can't see pulling a gun in a fist fight....seems like things got out of hand quick and in a hurry!

Feisty always gets bent out of shape when confronted with facts and replies with childish insults. She just doesn't get the fact that once you have resorted to insults you have lost the intellectual argument. Maybe she just plain doesn't have enough "ammunition" to engage in an intellectual argument at all.

Romney has to pick Rubio to insure he can get Florida (which has thrown more people off the voter rolls and keeps no weekend hours for Latino and black workers to register to vote and so is likely to go the Republicans way).

The price is steep, however, because New Jersey (Christie), Wisconsin (Ryan) Minnesota (Pawlenty) and Pennsylvania (Santorum) become more likely to go the Democrats way in November without one of their own on the ticket.

I understand that immigration reform is complex but it confounds me that Romney doesn't even support the Dream Act. I would think that would be enough for any voter, regardless of his or her ethnic heritage. A child brought here illegally through no action of their own who grows up and goes to college or serves in our military should have a path to legal citizenship.

This statistic about Latinos only goes to show that the Republican right wing agenda is going to get smacked down soon. The right wing looney toons are in their last days. Soon, the Republican Party will be a white southern party only. Everybody else welcomes the idea of a more egalitarian society. It is not Marxist or extreme to want better public education opportunities and better healthcare for children and seniors. Quite frankly, the new Republican mantra is not "live free or die," it is rather "live rich or die."

The republican party of years gone by is no more. The far right crazies have taken over the once grand ole party and turn it into a joke a minute party. Just look at Palin. There are many former republican that will be voting for President Obama because all the lies, flip-flopping and just out right crazy ideas that the Republican Party now wastes time and money on. They voted against their own ideas. The American people can see that the republican do not care about the middle class only the rich. Trickle-down economics has failed.

Now say what you want but there is a race problem when it comes to President Obama. The level of disrespect shown to him so far is truly amazing. And coming up with lame excuses as to not admit this is about the color of his skin is just so funny.

Never have the American people so disrespected their President like what is going on now. And yes this is about race. There is no other reason. The birther issue is a joke and everyone with half a brain knows that if he was not an American citizen, none of the republican leaders or democratic leaders would have allow him to be sworn in. If McCain, Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, McConnell, Ryan, Romney, Santorum, Gingrich and Paul accepts him as President why is this still trying to be an issue. It is not. The governor of Hawaii Linda Lingle a republican and the Hawaii director of the State Department of Health has both certified that he was born there. Yet you birthers want the official in Hawaii to violate their state laws to satisfy you. If you birthers don’t believe these people then why are you not screaming for them to be voted out? Having to show his college transcripts, birth certificate, school records are just lame excuses. President Obama has proven all he needs to prove to the leaders in Washington from both parties. If you do not believe these republican leaders then that only proves nothing will convince you of the truth. Believe the lies if that makes you feel like you are not a racist. All of you racist have been looking for other lame excuse to challenge him so you don't have to look yourselves in the face and admit you are a racist.

This current economic situation we are in took many years to get where we are at. You all expect President Obama to fix it overnight. That is impossible. Unlike the Republican leaders who will follow along with anything their leadership says, the Democrats have not. They have addressed the needs of the people within their districts and if their voters did not like something that the President or Congress was trying to do then they voted against it. So the super majority issue is a non-player. Democrats do not have robots that follow everything the Koch brother says.

I am a moderate independent. I believe in having my guns but I also believe women should be able to choose what happens with their own bodies. If men can their insurance pay for Viagra and the insurance should also pay for birth control.

You can get any poll to say anything depending on how you word the questions. Most people that disagree with the current Affordable Health Care Act wanted a single payer option in it. Instead of the Republicans trying to work with the Democrats to pass this law, they did everything in their power to try and derail it. Why, because they are hell bent on not having anything get done for the American people while President Obama is in office.

And for why the race issue keeps coming up, this is about President Obama’s race plain and simple. There are more voters out here that believe in "Anybody but the Republican Clowns" than there for anybody but Obama. The Republican Party is no more. It should call itself the crazy party because of all the crazy mouthpieces they have.

With all due respect MSgt....the reason that the race issue is still an issue.....is basically cause folks such as yourself keep insisting that it's a race issue! Let it go man, that card is way overplayed. Maybe some of the "good 'Ol Boys" still have a problem with his skin color....I don't know! My problem is with the small bites that the current administration keeps taking at my civil liberties. I didn't fight for government handouts for all... I didn't fight for social entitlements.... not everyone is a winner, everyone doesn't deserve a trophy and a snack after the game.....some folks just need to spend more time at practice and less time expecting that they are owed free stuff in the end for advocating little to no effort! You should understand this MSgt... its kinda like PT, it's an induvidule effort, you get out of it just exactly what you put in to it, nothing more....nothing less! But then there is always some CSM that wants to chew your arse as the NCO cause Pvt Joe Snuffy can't pass the test!

msgt -- when you talk about President Obama do you think of him first as the 44th President of the United States or as the first Black President of the United States?

I noted above in a conversation with kay that he is the 44th, no other label needed. Would you agree with us?

Show me where the Republicans have truly tried to reach across the aisle?? I don't agree with everything President Obama has done. However, since he is getting NO help from the republicans (our way or no way) he is doing the best he can. Like I said before I am an independent and I look at all sides.

There is no letting go because it is a constant issue. The veiled attempts to says it is not are just so funny. Tell me what other reason that the Republicans have when they will vote against their own ideas. The republicans have accepted no responsibility for where this country is at. Both the Democrat and the Republicans are equally to blame. But trying to put this whole debt issue on President Obama is a joke. Why hasn't anyone questioned why President Bush did not put the cost of these two wars on the books?? Once that is answered then lets talk about the debt.

I think of him as just another President. However I have paid attention to how he has been treated since he got into office. The republican saying we will do everything to make him a one term president. Calling him a liar before a joint session of congress. The lack of referring to him as Mr President, Mr Obama etc. The lack of the republican party response to the birther issue.

                                Need I go on.

Where is the respect that goes with the office of the President of the United States?

You're wasting your time trying to win over a certain element of the population. We older people know quite well the differences that exist in the present day GOP, and the party of yesteryear. There is indeed a very grave difference in what was the GOP, and what now is the NEW GOP/Teaparty. I honestly believe that the party elders are now trying to allow the Teaparty to take itself down in order to reestablish the party of the past. I too am an independent who votes according to qualification, and not party affiliation. Time will eventually reveal how the GOP plans to move their party forward. I also believe that the only thing that keeps them alive at the present, is that voters are using them to send a message of disenchantment to government. However, because of the GOP's unwillingness to work across the isle, they will undoubtedly be receiving that message come November.

msgt -- all things being being equal i believe he is being treated in a manner consistent with his immediate predecessor.

a lot has been made of the one-term comment and that is fine. i wonder, though, do you believe the Congressional leadership got together after President Bush (43) was elected to determine how they could best support him? I would doubt it. Did they say as much in public, not that i recall. Did they say as much with their opposition to him, I would say so.

the birther thing is interesting. something comparable could be the forged documents about President Bush's military service. Was that all Dan Rather or might there have been some democrat operatives involved?

i do believe that President Obama has brought some of this on himself. Why did he feel it necessary to hide his birth certificate, why won't he release his college transcripts? What is he hiding? I don't know if he is hiding anything but he sure raises suspicion with his lack of transparency.

I respect the office of the President and always will. The occupant at any given time has to earn the respect, it is not awarded by virtue of sitting at the big desk in the Oval Office. Over the years I have lost respect for President Obama on many levels.

I did not see his predecessor being call a liar in front of congress, did you? Since he had to provide proof to the election boards, which validate his compliance with the constitution, why does he have to prove anything to you? The current republican and democrat leadership accepts that he is a citizen, why can't you? I never seen or heard of any other president being asked to release their college transcripts, why is he being asked?

The office of the President of the United States commands respect from its citizens. When he is not even address as Mr. President, Mr. Obama, President Obama that shows disrespect. Even when the media was criticizing President Bush, they address him as such.

I have my issue with some of the thing he has done. However, if he cannot get the republicans to support even their own ideas, he has to what he has to do in order to try and take care of the American People.

I have lost all respect for the republicans, because in their desire to see him as a one term president, they have screwed over the American people.

These are all countries that we will end up bailing out because entitlements have gone crazy. There is nothing wrong with people helping people that need the help. Our problem is that we are helping people that do not need it. A bigger government is not the answer, accountability is.

So who is going to pay for all this and big gov't that the Mexicans want?? Half the people pay NOTHING in income tax and even if you took every penny from millionaires, it still wouldn't be enough! People need to realize that they cannot keep taking without giving ! What are all the entitlement people gonna do when this country goes broke and there is no money for their welfare, free health care, birth control and every other little thing that people "think" they are entitled to? Do the freeloaders realize this country is already 16 TRILLION in debt and growing every day???

And I don't think the Hispanics are as important as most people say. They whine and complain alot, but thats really about it. Most are not educated enough to have a clue as to what is going on in this country.

pig -- Al Sharpton is nothing more than a charlatan (A person who makes elaborate, fraudulent, and often voluble claims to skill or knowledge; a quack or fraud.)

His recent participation in the exploitation in the Martin case is just the most recent example. The local NAACP has decided to step out and condemn the call by Rev. Al Sharpton for economic sanctions and civil disobedience if the local government does not arrest George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin.

While "sticking up for the little guy" Sharpton drew a $241,732 salary and perks that included first-class or charter air travel, tax filings show. He owes the IRS $2.6 million in income tax, and nearly $900,000 in state tax.

This is the man you will support 4-ever?

But that isn't Sharpton's fault. He was so busy doing "good" that he didn't have time to pay his taxes. It should all be forgiven. You wouldn't want an aging activist to spend the rest of his years in prison or poverty, would you?

Oh, jeez! This is what's wrong with this country. You say black and I say white. The division is terrible and as much as I hate to say it, it's the Republicans that have made race, religion, gender, and sexual preference the dividing factor in this country. Sure, my post will get slammed by some people and to tell you the truth, I could care less. Truth is truth. I am usually not a prejudiced person, but because of the way I am treated in the state of Wyoming and other states in the West that are predominantly white and Republican, I am beginning to see the reason why race is still an issue today. My skin is two shades lighter than a perfect tan and two shades too dark for most of the people I deal with every day. I am Hispanic with roots in Puerto Rico, yet I've been told more than once to go back to Mexico where I belong. Some of the comments I have read here are unnecessary and ridiculous.

So the people that get the handouts support the handouts?

That's the beauty of the welfare state; it earns you votes. That is, until the house of cards collapses and the U.S. dollar completely depreciates.

Go ahead call me a racist. It's the democrats' favorite response to cold hard facts.
