First Thoughts: The writing is on the wall

After last night’s sweep, the writing’s on the wall: Romney, unless the extraordinary occurs, is going to be the GOP nominee… And Santorum isn’t going to win… Updated delegate count: Romney 573, Santorum 212, Gingrich 137, Paul 34… Santorum’s no-win situation heading into Pennsylvania… Obama’s speech yesterday achieved one thing: It drove the conservative intelligentsia crowd nuts… Romney, at 11:45 am ET, gets chance to respond to Obama at the very same venue… And Scott Brown embraces Obama.

Jason Cohn / Reuters

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum addresses supporters at his Wisconsin and Maryland primary night rally in Mars, Pennsylvania, April 3, 2012.

*** The writing is on the wall: Last night’s GOP primary contests didn’t contain any new revelations: Mitt Romney won a contested state in Wisconsin, but it wasn’t pretty (the margin was just five points, 43%-38%, despite his endorsements and clear financial edge); he racked up a HUGE proportion of the delegates (so far picking up 83 to Rick Santorum’s nine -- that’s right, Santorum couldn’t even win 10% of avail delegates last night); and the demographics told the big story (about 40% in Wisconsin were evangelicals, below the 50% of higher mark in contests that Santorum has won). Given that we didn’t learn anything new in Wisconsin -- or in Maryland or DC -- the writing is on the wall: Romney, unless the extraordinary occurs, is going to be the Republican presidential nominee. And Santorum, unless there’s a miracle, cannot win. Here’s NBC’s delegate count: Romney 573, Santorum 212, Gingrich 137, Paul 34.

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd recaps Tuesday's primaries and Maryland, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

*** Santorum’s no-win situation: So the question is no longer IF Romney is going to be the nominee; rather, it’s WHEN Santorum will bow out. And in his speech last week, the former Pennsylvania senator made it clear that he’s still in this race. “Pennsylvania and half the other people in this country have yet to be heard,” he said in his concession speech last night, per NBC’s Morgan Parmet. “And we're going to go out and campaign here and across this nation to make sure that their voices are heard in the next few months.” Even Romney, in his victory address, acknowledged that the GOP race was moving to Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York (on April 24). Here’s the thing: Had Romney won Wisconsin by 10 points -- instead of five -- Santorum right now might be more open to exiting the race. Nevertheless, in the next 72 hours, he will hear plenty of voices telling him to get out. After all, demographically, Pennsylvania is a state that Santorum should lose if it weren’t his home state: It’s a combination of Illinois (Philly suburbs = Chicago ‘burbs) and Ohio. And even if he does win it, pundits will dismiss the victory because he won his home state. It’s a no-win situation.

*** He drives me crazy … and I can’t help myself: President Obama’s speech assailing the Ryan budget plan achieved one thing for certain yesterday: It drove the conservative intelligentsia crowd nuts. Townhall.com wrote: "Today we witnessed something truly remarkable. Barack Obama managed to out-do himself by uncorking what very well may have been the most dishonest, demagogic, and bitterly partisan speech of his presidency." The responses from the elected Republicans, while not QUITE as vitriolic, were similarly worded and focused. Bottom line: Their reaction seemed to be: How dare the president campaign against us!!!! And as we pointed out yesterday, Obama isn’t necessarily running against Mitt Romney; he’s running against the Republican Party brand -- and making sure that Romney owns that brand. In fact, Romney’s biggest challenge over the next two or three months will be for him to differentiate himself from the brand. There’s been a lot of focus of late on how damaged Romney has become in this process (his high negatives with indies, etc). But we’ve noticed a larger trend: The brand of the GOP is what’s been damaged; Romney may simply be collateral damage. And this is why he has to figure out a way to either improve the GOP’s brand or differentiate himself. Which can he achieve?

*** Romney’s chance to respond: Speaking of Obama’s speech yesterday, Romney today gets to deliver an address at the very same venue -- before newspaper editors in DC -- at 11:45 am ET. And while Romney hit the president during his victory speech last night (“Under this president's watch, more Americans have lost their jobs than during any other period since the Depression”), many political observers will be closely watching to see how he responds to Obama’s remarks from yesterday, as well as how responds to the three questions he’ll get from the audience. Remember, the day after primary wins haven’t always been kind to Romney and his campaign, and this speech before America’s newspaper editors has taken on more importance because of how the president chose to use the venue yesterday…

*** Yesterday’s two extraordinary speeches: Yet as we begin turning to the general election, yesterday was a pretty remarkable day. We saw Obama lay out his party’s indictment of the GOP and its governing philosophy: “Ronald Reagan, who, as I recall, is not accused of being a tax-and-spend socialist, understood repeatedly that when the deficit started to get out of control, that for him to make a deal he would have to propose both spending cuts and tax increases. Did it multiple times. He could not get through a Republican primary today.” And also yesterday, we saw Romney lay out his indictment of Obama and the Democrats: “In Barack Obama’s government-centered society, government spending will always increase because…there’s no reason to stop it. There’s always someone who is entitled to something more, and who will vote for anyone who will give them something more.” So yesterday was a day that people will be able to look back on and see what the two distinct economic visions are for the country.

*** On the trail, per NBC’s Adam Perez: After his speech in DC today, Romney campaigns in Pennsylvania… Santorum also is in the Keystone State, hitting Carnegie, Holidaysburg, and Mechanicsburg… Gingrich is in North Carolina… And Paul remains out in California.

*** Scott Brown embraces Obama: It’s not every day you see this kind of press release from a Republican senator: “Two major pieces of legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) will be signed into law by President Obama at White House ceremonies this week. As the first to introduce both the STOCK Act and crowdfunding legislation in the Senate, Senator Brown was invited and will attend both signing ceremonies. ‘I’m honored to receive these invitations from President Obama and I look forward to standing next to him as he signs these bills into law.’” So we’ve seen likely Democratic opponent Elizabeth Warren star in Obama’s campaign documentary. And now Brown is shouting from the mountain top that he’ll be standing next to Obama at signing ceremonies this week. Brown has two major hurdles to overcome if he’s going to win a full term: One, he’s trying to win as a Republican in a blue state during a presidential year. And two, how does he avoid getting defined by Romney? Well, we see what Brown is TRYING to do, have photo-ops with Romney’s opponent. Here’s betting we see Brown use his appearances at these signing ceremonies in TV ads while trying like mad to avoid appearances with Romney.

The Right Wing has hardened its core philosophies to snapping point. And the inflexibility of the GOP approach to problems that we know are solvable - is toxic to the present and future of America.

Like the 19th century Social Darwinists, today's Republicans forward the idea that anyone who has few resources, little cash or is judged to be of lesser intelligence/education, DESERVES their lowly lot in life.

Their forebearers in the nineteenth century ranked themselves at the top of an exclusively western peoples' list (upper class London/Paris/Munich) and ranked everyone else beneath them.

This group wrongly believed that there were higher and lower species of human beings. The humans on the lowest rungs were seen as fit for little more than the trash bin of history.

In 2012, the GOP/Koch party continues to forward the ideas of Social Darwinism via their policies and their views.

Ordinary folks in the U.S. are increasingly disenfranchised. The income disparity between affluent and non-affluent is widening. Incomes to the top 1% have increased by 275% since the 1980's. In 2010, 93% of all incomes in the US went to the top 1%.

In the world proposed by the GOP --- you will have no rights to health care, clean environment, fair pay, protection from violence, or any voice with which to fight back.

Today's GOP is not using the US cavalry as in the 19th century. Instead they're using Congress and state legislatures to contain/subdue and ultimately, achieve dominion over ordinary Americans.

(*Important to note that Charles Darwin never said there was any kind of goal to evolution, and so the term "Darwinism" has been misused and misunderstood.)

A Radical Vision for the Country

That's from Obama's speech yesterday trashing Paul Ryan and the House budget. I'm almost at a loss for words to describe the shameless demagoguery that was riddled throughout this pathetic little man's speech. So instead of picking it apart, I'm just going to throw his words right back at him. You want to see a radical vision for the country?
Then consider this:

Government debt in the United States continues to rise at an alarming rate, driven in large part by health and retirement security programs that are being weakened by severe demographic and economic challenges. The inconvenient truth is the social contract between our government and the citizens is weighed down by tens or trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities and the federal government is making empty promises that cannot possibly be fulfilled. Europe has showed us that the new "toxic asset" is the sovereign debt of irresponsible European governments that is infecting the balance sheets of their banks. And as the U.S. continues to accumulate our own debt, the very real fear is a similar crisis would emerge here. Now THAT is a radical vision for our country.

CBO and many others have been warning us about the consequences of not getting our fiscal house in order. They warn of a fiscal crisis that could emerge quickly when world financial markets suddenly reach a tipping point and vote no confidence in the ability of the U.S. to repay its debt. In that scenario, the value of the dollar would plummet virtually overnight and result in a dramatic increase in the cost of living for every American. You think oil prices are high now? Just wait until it takes a wheelbarrow full of low value dollars to buy a barrel of oil on the world market – that's assuming there would still be sellers out there willing to take dollars in payment. Our entire society – rich, poor, and everyone in between – would be shaken to its core. Now THAT is a radical vision for our country.

And you want to talk about social Darwinism? Social Darwinism might be a kind way to describe the society we are headed towards. The riots in Greece should be ample warning to every American with half a brain of the chaos that would ensue in this country if the world rejected our dollar. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security would be a shadow of their former selves, food stamps would be an anachronism, the military would barely be able to afford putting gas in their jeeps and tanks and the average citizen may not be able to afford to gas up at all. Who survives in that scenario? Only the strongest my friends, only the strongest. Now THAT is a radical vision for our country.

The administration recognizes this problem, but has done nothing about it. In testimony before the House Budget Committee Tim Geithner stated: "We're not coming before you to say we have a definitive solution to our long term problem. What we do know is we don't like yours." In other words, as a matter of political convenience the president's strategy is to let somebody else propose a path forward and then attack them for political gain. Hence, yesterday's contemptible speech.

The genius of America lies in a resilient citizenry empowered to take control of their own lives and pursue their individual destinies as they see fit. But this aspect of our freedom is slowly but inexorably fading away. Two years in a row, Paul Ryan has gone out on a really big limb to propose an approach that would staunch the bleeding and renew the prospects for future American prosperity. While the president proposes totally unrealistic budgets that drip with red ink as far as they eye can see, Ryan puts us on a path to fiscal sanity. And despite the outright lies coming from Obama and the left, Ryan does it in a way to ensure that Medicare and Social Security are still around for future generations – with no disruptions for those folks currently near or in retirement. But for his troubles, Ryan has been excoriated by our Demonizer-in-Chief.

Reelect Obama? Now THAT would be a radical vision for our country.

We've heard about it. It's better than candy, ice cream, and sex. It will solve ALL the financial problems of the United States. It's the Ryan budget. The income tax form will fit on a postcard. Why, this fellow Ryan has given us a tax code so simple, even a caveman could do it. Which is good, because if this monstrosity passes, most of us are going to be living in caves. Take a look, this is it: http://www.roadmap.republicans.budget.house.gov/

The first thing you have to know about Ryan is that he has money. Imagine that. The second is that he's a slow learner, because he has been in Congress since Republicans had total control of the budget. In that time, while the Bush/Obama tax cuts have been the law of the land, the rich continue to get richer. The poor get poorer and more lose their health insurance every day.

This must be good, so Ryan proposes to cut taxes more, much more, especially for that oppressed class - the filthy rich. He is also proposes tax cuts for corporations. How taxes can get any lower for a company like GE that pays absolutely no income taxes is a mystery. Perhaps Mr. Ryan will explain that when he actually has the guts to show the specifics of his plan.

To grease the skids for passing this horrid plan into law, Ryan appeals to our sense of fairness. The old system just isn't fair, he says, and to make it fair, we must cut taxes for the rich. To make it really fair, we must cut them a lot.

Another one of those really unfair things is "double taxation". Here we have this horrifying spectacle of a corporation paying taxes. That's the first time. Then, when they send dividend checks to their stockholders, the stockholders have to pay tax AGAIN. That's just not fair. They shouldn't have to pay taxes on that. Why, when you get your giant dividend checks aren't you just so mad that you have to pay tax on that money. That dividend check isn't really income, is it? Besides, if you didn't have to pay tax on that, you'd create jobs, wouldn't you?

There's the magic of the Ryan plan. The guy who gets the dividend check pays nothing in taxes. I still can't figure out how he was taxed twice. Now he won't be taxed even once. But like I said, that's the MAGIC of the Ryan plan.

Ryan also proposes to give us some cash to help buy health insurance. This is really, really great and it's also magic. He'll give us a couple hundred dollars a month to buy affordable insurance. Don't roll your eyes at me. He's the one who said affordable insurance, not me. Anyway, since employers won't be providing it any more, we'll have assistance buying those plans, and where it costs maybe a hundred or two out of our pockets today, it'll only be two or three times that much under Ryan. AND, we can change jobs. (Just for the heck of it, see if you can find out how much COBRA rates are. Make sure you're sitting down, when you see the numbers.)

Well gosh, boys and girls, there's just so much more, but there's only so much we can cover at a time. When you get the time though, go check out the plan.

There really aren't any points that are all that difficult to figure out, provided you completed grammar school. You know the plan is an unequivocal failure; it cannot work. There is one question Ryan should answer: "You're kidding, right?"

Beverly, Feisty, David, morning.

Research shows that nations with greater income equality create steadier, more robust economic growth.

Why would Americans want to go back to 19th century philosophies and practices that favor inequality, when we know from 100 years of history that they don't work?

FR: *** He drives me crazy … and I can’t help myself: President Obama’s speech assailing the Ryan budget plan achieved one thing for certain yesterday: It drove the conservative intelligentsia crowd nuts.

Wrong. The true nut is Barack Obama. He stands there being critical of the Ryan budget, when he has none of his own to fall back on. No Democrat wants to support Obama's budget, they don't want to be seen supporting a deficit busting calamity and have to run on that vote.

Obama has nothing left. All of his legislation has failed from his Stimulus plan, to ObamaCare, to his feeble attempts to get the housing market moving. His Green Energy initiatives have turned out to be nothing but a way to pay off his top campaign bundlers. After having his War on the Tea Party, War on Congress, War on Women, he moved on to his War on the Supreme Court, and now to his War on the Republicans. This is what Community Organizers do, whine and point fingers, and that is exactly what Obama does.

I’ve been spending some time on Lawrence O’Donnell’s Last Word site since there are articles there on the Trayvon Martin case, which I am following closely. There is someone there who wants us to apologize to Zimmerman’s parents for all this man has been through.

So I began engaging with him, explaining why, based on the 911 tapes that I feel Zimmerman should be charged in this case.

This guy assumes because of my avatar that I am a black male. I told him not to assume I was male. Here are two of his comments:

You say you heard the word spoken....I say you are, sir, a lying race baiting fool!

Not with that ugly mug shot that precedes your name. You, sir, are no lady, and if you were, you would be a whore to the race baiting leftist media and agitators in our society such as the Black Panthers.

Here I am with a photo of Thurgood Marshall, a most dignified man whom I greatly admire and this is how this man responds. A mug shot. Think about about. He calls it a mug shot.

Romney’s speech last night was nothing short of brilliant. He articulated what Obama and the Democrats are all about – Government Centered Society.

Sorry, but that is NOT American. Romney’s nomination and general election win are inevitable. America is not the land of layabouts looking for a government check. Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of people like that out there; just look at the crowds that show up at Obama campaign events.

But those people are not a true reflection of our great country. Most Americans still see this country as the land of opportunity.

Mitt Romney is one of those rare leaders. He gave away the millions that he inherited from his father and started over and built an empire. As Governor of Massachusetts, he brought the state out of the red and left a surplus without raising taxes. He brought the unemployment rate down from 5.3% to 4.7%.

At Bain Capital he created tens of thousands of jobs and created wealth for his partners and investors. Bain is the envy of the capital investment world for their unparalleled success. Money and wealth are not evil my moonbats friends.

Mitt Romney will be a remarkable President. Just what we need after Obama took us in the completely wrong direction.

Rob in MA: Romney’s speech last night was nothing short of brilliant.

It was. It pulled back the curtain of what Obama is really about, a government check for everyone, all on borrowed dollars. The Main Stream Media are so insulated in their rhetoric that they don't understand because of their limited view that a lot of people are not as impressed as they are with Obama. Romney is now starting to build his case against this failure of President, and if this speech is any indication, it will go very well for him as the campaign develops.

I think there's some truth to both Obama's criticisms of the GOP and Romney's criticisms of the Democrats. (Yeah, I know, using truth and Romney together in a single sentence is a bit unusual - I did say 'some' truth.)

There is good indication that Reagan wouldn't have won the GOP presidential nomination this year. In terms of positions, he'd be viewed as a moderate. In terms of candidate skills, he was so far ahead of this crowd, I also kind of think he could move the GOP back. But with heels dug in on some of this stuff, primarily revenue, he would not represent the prevailing party view.

And Romney's criticism of the Democrats ought to cause a little soul searching in that party, too. It does seem like the Democrats have no intention of ever decreasing spending on the 'safety net' and in fact is always looking for ways to bolster it. Like the GOP's refusal to consider higher taxes, that can be seen as simultaneously admirable and wrong headed; more wrong headed than admirable when taken to current degrees.

Romney is still a bald faced liar, and arguably a pathological liar who lies even when there is no reason to lie, potentially because he's descended to such depths of liardom that the difference between lies and truths is now lost on him, but in this case his comments ought not be dismissed entirely.

Backhouse, terrific post. We only need to read Paul Ryan's plan to understand the modern GOP's goals and they are not representative of what this country was established to be. A beacon of hope, give us your tired, your poor....

Beverly, great points. Listen to what the GOP says but also it is important to watch what they do.

Obama/Biden 2012!!!

It seem the conservative posters willingly accept Paul Ryan's budget as if it were carved in stone by a higher being. I wonder if they have really looked at the Ryan plan, read it or read analysis of it. It is one thing to believe in republican or democratic party ideology, it is another to do so without ever digging in the weeds for the facts, for the truth and without ever looking at the reports which tell thinking people something smells fishy. I used to be a republican, I dug in the weeds during Reagan's time and did find that little he said matched what he did. I do not believe everything democrats say or do; do not believe every policy they pass is great; however, I do know one thing--democrats at least believe in fairness for all and that it is important to give people a hand up. Republicans also believed in fairness for all and the need for a hand up as well once upon a pre-Reagan time. Now, the GOP seems to have no heart and no soul, no mathematical skills and have not been fiscally responsible in 30 years.

Does this guy get any lower?

Here I thought lying about his dying mother was as low as he could go.

Silly me. He's not done Plumbing the depths.

Then, there is the media.  The Founders elevated the media to lofty status- believing that a free press was a bulwark against tyranny.  So, tell me, what would they have made of a media that not only idolized a politician, were not only in his hip pocket, but allowed him to dictate HOW they should report on his policies?

This is Obama, speaking to the Associated Press yesterday:

"This bears on your reporting," President Obama said to journalists. "I think that there is oftentimes the impulse to suggest that if the two parties are disagreeing then they're equally at fault and the truth lies somewhere in the middle. And an equivalence is presented which I think reinforces peoples' cynicism about Washington in general. This is not one of those situations where there's an equivalency."

"As all of you are doing your reporting, I think it's important to remember that the positions that I am taking now on the budget and a host of other issues. if we had been having this discussion 20 years ago or even 15 years ago … would've been considered squarely centrist positions," Obama said a few moments later.

This after the head of the Associated Press heaped praise on the idol.

Sick making.

Violating the War Powers Act.  Dollars to Donors.  Back to back budgets that garner no votes at all.  Heck- no budget for his entire term of office.  Attempting to intimidate the Supreme Court.

Nobody is asking you guys to leave the cult- just to worship in privacy.

Do your jobs, report on him as you would a republican.

It's your duty.

Speaking of duty- Dennis, you have a duty to disclose the sources of your cut and pastes.  I caught you last night, using pieces of an article on Hot Air without attribution.

President Obama broke it down in simple terms for the American people to see the selfish, reptilian, brain, in Mitt Icky Ricky, and the other Darwin brains (who have not evolved into intellectual beings as I see it ) wanna bees running for president.

President Obama broke down the real PLUSES and MINUSES regarding tax breaks for the rich:

That’s an average of at least $150,000 for every millionaire in this country, $150,000.

Let’s just step back for a second and look at what $150,000 pays for:

a year’s worth of prescription drug coverage for a senior citizen
plus a new school computer lab

plus a year of medical care for a returning veteran

plus a medical research grant for a chronic disease

plus a year’s salary for a firefighter or a police officer

plus a tax credit to make a year of college more affordable

plus a year’s worth of financial aid

$150,000 could pay for all these things combined.

This is supposed to be about paying down our deficit? It’s laughable.

Yes, Mr. president it is LAUGHABLE!!! It's also anti-American and pathetic.

The media should use these privileged millionaire tax breaks as sound bites DAILY to remind people the big differences in what a tax cut for millionaires as opposed to what the middle and poor classes would receive.

Justice Marshall was an exceptional human being.

Good morning, everyone. Don't have much to say for myself this morning, but I did listen to Romney's speech last night, and based solely on the contrast between his speech and President Obama's speech on Ryan's budget plan, I do believe a toast is in order, because ....

This is the first day of President Barack Obama's second term.

Apologies folks, I have been knee deep in research. But I did have to post some latest facts and figures. After hours of research through the wee hours of the morning, I googled Romney Bain job gains and got 609k hits. The results of my in-depth research into Romney Bain jobs lost was 882k hits. Clearly, Romney has a net loss of in the creation of jobs. Please, Rob in Ma, explain why you promote a candidate that has a net negative when it comes to 'google' jobs creation.

On a side note, I also did in-depth research on Obama positive which netted 310m hits, Obama negative was 172m hits. Clearly, Obama is seen in a positive view.

David Walker, another terrific post. Oh, the twisted logic of the GOP. In my view Ryan's budget should be called Pathway to Disaster because the only prosperity will be for those who already prosper.

I was watching a bit of Morning Joe this AM. Joe S could not defend the Ryan budget and clearly did not want to discuss it so he pulled the typical GOP deflect and change the subject stunt--he whined about President Obama not submitting a budget and democrats not passing one. How often we read that same line on FR.

Pat, thanks for sharing that exchange. It's sad to read that person's comments for so many reasons.

I knew Obama cult members lacked the ability to think creatively- but I guess I was wrong.

You can twist anything into a "fact".

You do, however, get half a point to attributing the search engine. It's more than some on this board do.

Just for those unaware- copying and pasting without attribution is called plagiarism. It seems to be a favorite of the of the liberal posters on this board.

MSNBC - where you never hear the real stories that affect this country.

It's funny that there is no mention of the judges order for the DOJ to explain their stand on the duties of the Supreme Court after President Obama's assinie comments the other day. It's also funny that there isn't any mention of how close Paul Ryan's budget resembled the Erskine Bowles-Simpson reform. It's also funny that we haven't seen a story on the liberal court letting that ahole go after threatening our President.

We need new leadership in this country.

Bill of Virginia,

Your well written essay supports the radical vision that got us in this mess in the first place. As the result of the financial meltdown of 2008 still ripples through the economy, there is some good news.

http://www.npr.org/2012/04/03/149937079/wisc-school-districts-saved-after-bad-real-estate-deal

Five school districts in our heartland got sold one those exotic investments under the guise of good old bonds.

Well today the investment company is paying big time. The broker in this deal has had his licence revoked. In fact ,the end of this house of cards stretch back to Germany which bailed out the Irish and Canadian banks that made these toxic loans.

The complex financial cirsis of 2008 reveals that greed and lack of regulations that give a new meaning to investment banks continue to do business.

The GOP vision for 2012 continues to be blind and now put the blame on SS, Medicare etc to fix a problem they did not cause in 2008.

The children , their teachers, and parents school boards have had their first taste of justice and have restored their balance sheet for their schools.

It seems apparent that Romney will win the Republican nomination and square off against President Obama for the 2012 election. It is my opinion that he doesn't have what it takes to win against President Obama.

First of all the Republican plan has taken steps to alienate women, minorities, the poor, the middle class and the elderly. The unfortunate thing is that many dyed-in-wool Republican supporters will still vote for him even if it means they are voting against their best interests. The Republican party has shown nothing but indifference toward the plight of the average American as we struggle with today's economy.

Secondly, Romney simply can't sell himself or his ideas in my opinion. He has all the charm and charisma of a person who is trying to selling something he doesn't believe in. He lacks what President Obama holds: warmth, conviction and passion. A person trying to convince the people of this country that he should be their leader needs to prove to us that he is passionate about helping all people to live a better life. He hasn't. He has to be able to show that he is concerned about us through an embodiment of warmth that shows he is sincere about that. He can't. And finally, he has to prove that he has the conviction to be able to do all of that and so far he is no where near the mark. I doubt that he ever would be. The problem seems obvious to me that he is either running based solely on the Republican Party ideals instead of his own convictions, or that he simply doesn't have enough good ideas to convince us that he should be our President as he continues to change his ideas from day to day.

President Obama has shown the compassion, conviction, intelligence and resolve to help the average American and to move this country forward. A vote for President Obama in November will be a vote toward helping the U.S. become an even stronger nation than we have been in the past.

So, Paul Ryan ran to Fox News because President Obama said such mean things about him. Ryan said that Obama was so wrong about everything that he wasn't going to bother responding "point by point". What a cop-out. He didn't respond to anything Obama said because it was all true. So Ryan is reduced to the usual boilerplate whines that Republicans always do when the facts aren't on their side, which they seldom are.

Jody, with respect to your comments about Joe Scarborough. I don't watch him and haven't watched him for several years now. But there is one thing that I think about occasionally. Of all the on air pundits/journalists, I always thought that if there was one "media" person who would genuinely get along with President Obama, it would be Joe S. I can't explain it, but I can absolutely see them together having a few beers or playing golf or something similar and I think they would get along quite well.

The GOP of today has made that an impossibility. It's tragic really. Joe S. has to consider our president his "enemy". It's what the GOP has become.

for David Walker:

I hope you never have to live on leftovers in your retirement. If it weren't for the dividends from stocks and bonds bought a little at a time over many years, we would be trying to subsist on Social Security instead of being able to enjoy ourselves in our retirement.

You whine and moan now about attempts to avoid the same fate as the European nations, but what will you do when Congress finally wakes up and bites the bullet the way Spain has? Will you riot in the streets when you have no toys? Will you burn the businesses of hardworking fellow citizens because you don't have your munificent monthly stipend to spend?

Please try to remember that the supply of money is finite and will not support FDR-junior's vision of the Greater than Great Society. Social Security and Medicare struggle under the burden not having enough input to match output while Congress as a whole continues to piddle away money like a drunken sailor on shore leave and the two parties can't agree on anything except possibly funding another study of something that has already been studied to death.

We must stop the runaway train of Democratic tax-and-spend before our country collapses like Greece and Rome. Bread and circuses must go before we "enjoy" the same problems that Europe is "enjoying" right now. Please read the economic news coming out of Europe and be forewarned of catastrophe in the making here.

Suuuuprise, suuuuprise, Suprise! (best Gomer Pyle imitation every) Mitt Romney will be the nominee.

Suuuuprise, suprise! (Ok, Gomer has left the building)

Ouch! I just hurt myself trying to pat myself on the back.

WAAAAAY back last summer I predicted that Mitt Romney would be the nominee. Folks told me I was wrong, they said, "What about...?" and "Naaah..it's gonna be...." as one RWNJ Fave after another fell by the wayside I kept telling the skeptics, "Romney is the guy."

      I waaaz riiiiIIIIiiight! HA HA.

I also told you he would have trouble in the South with the Evangelicals and the right of right wingers and guess what?

      I waaaaz riiiiIIIIiiight, again!

And, I told you his performance in the South would be a good indication of how he will fare in the General Election. The three negatives, Moderate, Mormon and Millionaire would be his doom. The GOP evangelicals and right-wingers are going to stay home on election day. Mark my words. They will not be able to vote for Romney, not even to get rid of the Kenyan Muslim Socialist Commie Black guy.

Just look at that mediocre performance. Romney almost NEVER get above 40+% even with all his money, organization and ground troops, he is barely able to eke out a win within the GOP.

I told you, but no one believed me. Well, I'm glad the President and he people listened to me (they should send me a check) because I was right and Romney is the guy.

So here is my latest and greatest prediction.

President Obama is going to win re-election in November in the biggest landslide in US History. An election win that will have a significant coat-tail effect down the ticket. Get busy folks, we will NEVER have a better opportunity to take back the House and shore up the majority in the Senate.

If you're a gambler, get the best odds you can find and bet the house on the President because it is in the bag.

Remember, I was right about Mitt, I was right about the South and I'm right about November.

FOUR MORE YEARS, FOUR MORE YEARS, FOUR MORE YEARS.

Please read the economic news coming out of Europe and be forewarned of catastrophe in the making here.

Bob in KC - while you are busy trashing the Euro system of retirement pensions, consider this; France, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK all rank above the US in pension benefits. World wide, we rank 16th. The doom and gloom of your dire voodoo predictions just don't exist on a grand scale. This country has a piss-poor retirement system only because conservatives insist on a 'to each his own' attitude. It is obvious other countries know how to own this issue. Greece and Rome are not the examples to follow - our comparisons should be against the other 15 countries that know what they are doing.

      Bob in KC lotsanumbers:

You wrote: "I hope you never have to live on leftovers in your retirement. If it weren't for the dividends from stocks and bonds bought a little at a time over many years, we would be trying to subsist on Social Security instead of being able to enjoy ourselves in our retirement."

Would you please explain how it makes sense that your income from any source should escape taxation? I'm old? Just because? We've played this earned/unearned income BS long enough. Income is income and it should be taxed whether you made that money scrubbing floors, kissing asses in the executive suite, or getting checks in the mail.

"You whine and moan now about attempts to avoid the same fate as the European nations, but what will you do when Congress finally wakes up and bites the bullet the way Spain has?"

I trust that is the generic "you". I have never whined about attempts to avoid economic collapse. Never. I have been on the fiscal sanity bandwagon for about 40 years now. The one doing the whining is you. Yes, you are going to have to pay taxes on your income. That's the way we raise revenues regardless of what financial illiterates like Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney say.

"Please try to remember that the supply of money is finite and will not support FDR-junior's vision of the Greater than Great Society."

Oh really? Perhaps you'd care to share that fact with the Federal Reserve. Where do you think the massive amounts of capital that have been extracted from the economy originated? That's right Bob, the Fed. They have been devaluing your money year after year after year even as they have transferred that money to the rich. Where do you think the bailout money went?

I am fed up with you simpletons who point at the Democrats as the root of all financial evil. The fact is both parties have been in on this waste, something I have pointed out time and again. However, the fact remains, the greatest waste has been occasioned by Republicans.

Spare me your right-wing talking points. I have them down cold. They're BS.

Pennsylvania is a state that Santorum should lose if it weren’t his home state: It’s a combination of Illinois (Philly suburbs = Chicago ‘burbs) and Ohio. And even if he does win it, pundits will dismiss the victory because he won his home state. It’s a no-win situation.

Santorum will have to fight hard just to tie with Romney in his home state of Pennsylvania. Don't forget he lost his 2006 U.S. Senate race there to Bob Casey, Jr. by the largest margin of defeat ever for a Senate Republican.

Nonetheless, I'm happy to see Ricky play Green Hornet, flying after Mittens and stinging him all the way to Tampa. Mitt will be so swollen and itchy by August, we'll likely be treated to more of his testiness. That's both entertaining an enlightening. Obama is a Jedi Master compared to testy old Mittens.

My Republican Muslim Brothers! Where is the heat for Scott Brown, who was clearly not acting Muslim enough when he embraced Chairman Obama!

I mean, Cleric Romney may not be as Muslim as Brother Santorum, but at least he stays clear of the Chairman! We Republican Muslims must not let getting things done stand in the way of our hatred for the despot, Chairman Obama.

And let's talk about those COMMIES. I would like to be the first to say there are plenty of 'white males' who are godless and wear the uniform grey! Besides, have you forgotten about Muslim Cain? That's what your Godlessness has brought you, a failed memory! And you make fun of us wanting our 72 virgins in heaven when we die.

You can count on a Communist to not fix the economy and then make healthcare the most important job. I mean, like I say, I WANT Commie healthcare. But you blame Muslim Bush for invading Iraq (they weren't real Muslims) and then switching off the WMD topic. All while your commie chairman runs on fixing the economy and then switches to healthcare.

Muslim Romney knows how to do the flip flop! At least we all know when we pray that Muslim Romney will not fix the economy either. He is too wealthy. What is on the agenda is a Kingdom to Allah, and you godless commies will then at least have an afterlife to look forward to. Start appreciating Muslim Republicans or face an eterniy of fire!

I am fascinated by the right's thinking of the national debt and deficits being a partisan issue. Come the end the everyone on Capitol Hill has paint on their hands. It is not President Obama's policies that got us into this mess , it is Washington as a whole.

Please STOP blaming the debt on the Democrats, it makes it very difficult to take your opinion seriously when you do. At least do what those with half a brain do and place the blame on the inability to give us relief from the debt (even though that logic is flawed as well).

The right is getting more and more desparate. Obama did not do a bad job in his four year's provided the circumstances. The idea that Romney can do a better job is the only true issue worth argue about. I do not agree that he could, especially if he is coming in with the mindset tax increases are out of the question.

If you are going to criticize Obama, please at least speak of how your replacement would do a better job, and what policies they have come up with or support that would lead to better outcomes than those that the current administration support. I rarely see this debated. I usually just see a list of half facts about how President Obama is attempting to destroy America. Face it what the Republicans have to offer is simply not the better choice.

Reddev, Anna Molly and Fiesty--wow I must be getting popular around here to merit a discussion from all of you. I love when Fiesty chimes in because she never even bothers to "critically think" that was for you Reddev and actually post anything or reply with substance. But thanks for the shout out from you other two. Let me ask you both a question and lets use David's post as an example. I realize that both of you and many others here have a total predisposition to believe or support anything from Obama or his fellow party members. I get that and understand why Backhouse, TP and others cut and paste various items because they are in essence campaigning on his behalf and not interested in debate or substantive discussion on various issues like tax policy. But several of you at least at times actually want to discuss issues even with a predisposition towards one ideology or party. So if I were to respond to David's post to point out his obvious factual inaccuracies, does that make me someone you guys automatically dismiss? I have never had a problem with the liberals or progressives on here not wanting to vote for any GOP candidate but I dont understand the lack of honest intellectual discourse. For example, lets discuss the Ryan plan factually first. The basics of his plan eliminate loopholes and deductions while reducing the top individual rate. If the top rate becomes the effective tax rate at 25% because of the elimination of the loopholes and deductions, that would be a huge tax increase for the wealthy which is pointed out by you guys all the time when you find out Romney is paying 14%. He is also hopefully dramatically reducing the corporate income tax rate and increasing the rate to the owners in dividends and capital gains, making our corporations far more competitive against our competitors and David knows that corporate taxes are much less of a progressive tax on individuals than the individual tax so that should be a good thing. So again the wealthy pay more tax. So the Ryan plan on its face would be more progressive than our current system but thats not what David posted. Now if you guys want to argue or debate how the tax system would be implemented and you dont trust the GOP to adopt the plan as is etc, thats opinion based conclusions that you can base your vote on. But I dont understand why all of you get so hot and bothered and dont like my words embellish or critically think when I try to steer the discussion back to basic facts of the debate. When someone goes on a campaign post thinking they are convincing or changing someone's mind on here, thats just a waste of a post. Why cant we just discuss the issues.

Let me give you another example. When tax policy gets discussed on here, its often stated that 50% of the people dont pay federal income tax or that the rich pay less than the poor etc. If someone were to reply and say but everyone pays payroll tax and how does that go into the equation or everyone pays local sales taxes, federal excise taxes like gas taxes or property taxes, we could all have a discussion, partisan or passionate belief that the current system and method is wrong, right or needs tweaking and can vote based on their candidates policy towards these issues, but adding to those basic facts by discussing who pays what is not political but factual. So when I provide some background info like who gets impacted on an increase in corporate tax, why do you guys get hot and bothered as thats not political and shouldnt we know that as part of the debate. When someone like TP says the rich pay less tax than the poor, and me or someone else provides the data showing the rich on both a percentage and on an absolute dollar basis pay virtually all the tax, they get vilified as anti Obama. If TP wants to state that the rich should pay more than they already do, thats a fine opinion and I dont attack that personally.

I guess is there anyone on the blog that wants to discuss issues or just campaign for their candidate?

AM: Like Jesus might have done, for example

Ah yes, the proverbial "Jesus" argument.

Jesus would not had spent billions on Green energy companies, companies conspicuously owned by Obama campaign bundlers. Jesus would not be openly hostile to the Supreme Court. Jesus would not blame others. Jesus would not pass and sign into law unconstitutional laws.

Jesus would be for people being able to take personal responsibility. Jesus would expect people to do what is right for themselves. Jesus would be for people providing for themselves and not depend on others to sustain them.

And we may need Jesus to create a miracle to clean up the debt Obama has run up in 4 years.

You see AM, you're a socialist. You expect the government to do everything for everybody. You, like Obama, point fingers at others for being the problem, but never do anything yourself to help solve it. Raising taxes on the rich is a political smoke screen. There are not enough "rich" to pay for all your wants. If you want to be like Jesus, why don't you and other finger pointing socialists give half of your earnings to the ones that need it most? That won't happen, because you're nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.

      james --

anna -- how would you suggest determining the people that need the money? does it need to be in the form of a tax so the government can get a piece of the action before the people that need it see anything?

I always find it amusing how conservatives think it's only government that gets a piece of the action before anyone "sees anything."

What about health insurance carriers, for example, that get about 20 percent of the "action" before you ever see a cotton swab? By contrast, Medicare only needs 5 percent of that action for administration.

And what about investment brokers who take fees of up to a quarter of the value of your portfolio, while you see absolutely nothing on your statement to reflect any fee at all?

What about my oncologist, who charged my insurance carrier $200 for a 10-minute visit, where we sat around for 5 out of the 10 minutes and talked about how greedy lawyers are.

And what about retailers who mark up product by hundreds or thousands of percent over what it costs to produce, raking all of that profit off the top before you ever see that $5 bottle of water.

Where on earth did you ever get the idea that the private sector is free?

Frankly, compared to the gouging that goes on there, the government doesn't look all that bad to me.

As for who needs the money, it's obvious that you don't. But you never know. Paul Ryan's grandmother, for example, needed government programs to provide her Alzheimers treatment. That's a little detail of his own life that the little hypocritical weasel never shares with the senior crowd in his town hall meetings.

Don't be so quick to judge the situations of others, and decide who is worthy. That person who needs government assistance for health care may be you, or someone you love.

If, indeed, you love anyone but yourself.

Should we not all help our neighbors?

Kirk, the rich should pay more in taxes, bottom line. I can say that statement and not blink. I could also write many more paragraphs given all my reason why I believe that. I won't go in to detail but those would be based on the protection of their resources under taxes and also the basic standard of living.

Just as you say how many dance around the issue, so do the rich when told they should pay more taxes. They do not answer whether or not they should pay more, or if they have paid more in the past. Instead, they claim how so many don't pay taxes, how the government spends it in all the wrong places, they complain about how the poor all recieve hand outs, they yell from mansions how we are trying to punish them for their success, they claim how you could tax them at 100% and it would not fix the deficit. They never do answer the real question, should they pay more in taxes.

So Kirk I simply ask honestly, without deflecting on excuses why they should not. Do you think the rich are fairly taxed based on percentage of income (not actual amounts?) If so do you think the poor who pay no INCOME tax should be taxed at a higher rates and receive less deductions and credits. If so why?

I do not mean that to be rude towards you Kirk, I would just like those questions answered (by anyone willing to ). The reason I say this is the middle class do not enjoy the same benefits as the rich in avoiding tax. They do not have a significant enough amount of capital to claim substantial income through capital gains. They do not have so much "excess" wealth, so the marginal rates they pay actuallly do effect their standard of living. Even if you do not believe the rich don't deserve tax hikes please explain why they need cuts? Any deductions proposed in the Ryan plan probably hit middle class families just as hard if not harder than the rich so I think that is a pathetic point.

The Wisconsin primary ballot required one to first designate yourself as either Republican or Democrat, or your ballot would not be valid - apparently no such thing as an Independent in WI anymore.

Subsequently, you were repeatedly told by poll workers that you were required to vote along the party line you designated on the ballot or your ballot would not be valid - no crossing party lines in Wisconsin.

As a newly turned Independent due to this GOP circus I felt cheated in not being able to send a message and identify myself as a former Republican turned sour on this group and vote NO to all of them and check President Obama's box to send a message.

I have to think that there are a lot of us as former Republicans now wanting to express our disgust with this new GOP by informing the GOP with our vote for President Obama that we're not having any more of this.

I wonder how many of us as Independents and former Repblicans had to identify ourselves in WI as a Democrat to state our case. Plus, no mention of this and the vote/tally for Obama out of WI last night?

anna -- slow down, take a breath. I asked you a couple of questions. i did not make any judgements but you certainly have, in my opinion.

i think several of your examples are without merit.

think you are wrong on insurance companies,

if a broker did that to me i would find another broker,

you should report your oncologist to the insurance company or medicare as appropriate (if we had less of their behavior and more medicine we would all be better off),

i do not buy $5 bottles of water,

i cannot imagine how you can attribute your private sector comment to anything I said in my 2 questions but of course the private sector is not free (just as "free" contraceptives are not free),

your opinion of the government is clearly more positive than mine,

how did you come to the conclusion that i don't need the money?

so Paul Ryan's mother needed help, would you have denied her the help because of her son?

      I did no judging

And then the insult about loving others, not very dignified

Helping neighbors is what it is all about.

But you never answered the question -- who should decide? the government, a panel, your neighbors?

JoAana, I do not think you read my post... I listed your excuses and you simply just made another one. You did not answer if the rich should pay more taxes you simply left an excuse. Your answer would have been sufficient if you simply even just said. The rich should not pay more taxes. Instead, you ask me how much more should they pay.

I cannot give specific numbers, I want higher rates of taxes on larger margins of income. I would not mind a tax similar to the Buffet rule on taxing those who make over a million dollars of annual income a little higher. It sad that the poor cannot pay more in taxes, but guess what? They are poor. People have to live at the end of the day.

Hmmmmm, sure does sound like David Walker is advocating repealing the $500,000/$250,000 (married filing jointly/single) exemption on the capital gain from the sale of your primary residence. And repealing the exemption for the income value of employer paid health insurance. And he supports taxing the income that you use to pay mortgage interest and charitable deductions and state and local property taxes itemized deductions and eliminating the standard deduction if you don't itemize deductions. And eliminating the personal exemptions on your 1040. And eliminating the 0% tax bracket on the first $17,000/$8,500 (MFJ/S) And eliminating the IRA contribution deduction.

new -- Not a partisan attack. Simply trying to expand the dialog.

So if i get the point of your response the President has lied about national security -- I can imagine this is true though I have no examples. And I would imagine that several (most or all?) Presidents have done the same. We can agree.

I am concerned that Governor Romney has lied and said the same to you before. Though he is a private citizen at this point so cannot influence policies or other government actions.

You resist saying that President Obama has lied except in the case of National Security. This I would find to be very partisan. His lies do have a direct influence on policy and other government actions.

So, your contention remains that candidate or President Obama has never told a lie?

I am also curious as to why you insist on using childish names when referring to Governor Romney.

@Akeem - you are simply making too much sense for most posters. When you consider preservation of wealth, which many conservatives do, it would seem to me that 99% of the national defense should be paid for by the wealthy to protect their riches. Simply put, why should I pay for national defense to protect my under-water mortgage on property I don't own. Of course, this fun bit of thinking can be extended to 'social values'. Shouldn't the truly conservatives pay more towards national defense to protect their virginity. After all, <gasp>, mine is long gone, and so there is nothing to protect.

@NDD - JAS1 would have nailed Jesus to a cross if he suggested giving up wealth to follow him. Oops, I think that already happened.

      james --

You're so far off base that's it's clearly not worth my time when you have not even the first clue about how insurance companies or investment brokers are gouging you. Where do you suppose the billions of dollars come from to pay UHC's CEO, just for one example? Do a little basic research, okay? And then we'll talk.

But there is one thing that's easy to set straight.

I'm the one who wants to continue helping Ryan's grandmother.

      He's the one who's not.

Nursing home coverage for seniors is paid for by Medicaid. 19 million people will lose Medicaid coverage under the Ryan budget. (I posted a source for that yesterday). If Ryan's grandmother was still alive, she could easily be one of them.

Would you vote for that budget if you KNEW it would be your relative?

And since you can't possibly know for sure, why would you vote for it at all?

And what would you propose to help her then?

Sorry, james, purely a partisan attack from you. What you claim is your President "lying" is simply things he has wanted to do, but since he has a "teabagger" House, can't get done.

Mittens purely lies daily, about what his past intentions are, and what his new "ethics" are.

Why do I call Mittens, Mittens? Hard to have any respect for someone that is so divorced from reality that he puts a dog on top of a car in a kennel on a long trip. I have dogs. My dogs travel with us frequently,IN THE CAR, both are involved with eventing. The Papillon travels in a car seat, with a harness restraint made to measure for her, the Collie has a harness restraint made to measure for him. That is what a concerned, responsible owner does.

      The man is bonkers.

Now. This particular thread is getting you nowhere. You are making a spectacle of yourself. Do move on to more important things.

Akeem:The rich should not pay more taxes. Instead, you ask me how much more should they pay. I cannot give specific numbers, I want higher rates of taxes on larger margins of income.

The rich already pay 60% of the taxes, and you want them to pay more. What's interesting is that nowhere do you speak of cutting spending. Things look dire Akeem, if we tax more, that's that much more money taken out of the weak economy. There is no question the government is bloated, cuts are being made today in Defense, but the real drain on the government are the entitlements. I don't see anyone but the GOP and Paul Ryan legislating solutions to those problems. And for their efforts, they get criticized by the Obama and the Left, the same people that have no plans and promote the status quo.

Taxes collected on the order of the so called Buffett Rule won't do much if anything to close the budget gap. It's just politically correct fodder for the Left to complain about.

      Ouch!

My shoulder still hurts from all the self-back-patting I did.

If the GOP were REEEEEALLY smart they would concede the election, take their Tea Party members (the few that survive November) to the woodshed and try to recoup what their obstructionism has cost them over the last two years.

That might put them in better shape for the open seat contest in 2016.

      Naaaaaah.

I'm so confident that the GOP has fatally damaged their party and won't do what it would take to get them back in the game, I'm starting to feel more optimistic about 2016!

But it's too soon to make any predictions about that. Re-take the House, get a super-majority in the Senate and watch the fur fly. Yeeehaw. Round-up time on the range, somebody pass that branding iron!

Government debt in the United States continues to rise at an alarming rate, driven in large part by health and retirement security programs...

Nonsense! If you want proof, just look at governmenet spending over the years 2000-2009: our national debt doubled in those years, adding $6T to the debt. But spending on health and retirement programs did not add up to $6T during that time. The increase in debt was due to a Republican administration spending money like drunken sailors!

The rise in government debt over the last 3.5 years is due to a lack of tax revenue and increased spending on unemployment benefits. Both of these are due to people being out of work. And that is due to the horrible economic policies of the last Republican administration trashing the American economy and putting people out of work!

      Albany Joe:

As a matter of fact, I have an excellent sense of humor, but I am at a loss to understand why you would find anything that is particularly amusing in your post.

Let's take this a point at a time. Your home is not an investment. It is your shelter. Current law allows rolling gains from your current residence into your next residence. Maybe you've already forgotten what happens when citizens use their shelters as gambling chits.

Why does it matter how employers distribute your earnings? That is between you and the employer. If some of your income goes to defray the cost of health insurance that does not alter the fact that your compensation is still income.

I take it from your comment about mortgage interest and charitable interest deductions that you approve of government-directed social engineering. Owning homes is good. Giving to charities is good. Salvation bribes are good. What the hell is that all about? If that is all well and good, why would you have an objection to the government investing in clean energy? Surely breathing clean air is preferable to snorting "clean" coal, wouldn't you say?

Search my posts again. See if you can find a reference to eliminating the 0% tax bracket. I wrote the posts, and I'm damned if I can remember writing such a thing. You wouldn't be making crap up, would you?

IRA's, 401-k's and such, well Joe, that's more social engineering. Why not invest that money right now, pay tax on your income right now, and move on? Surely you aren't suggesting that you approve of government incentives for investment, are you? A staunch conservative and Republican ideologue like yourself? Oh noooooooooooooooooo!

Lastly Joe, what middle class? There's no such thing. There's an upper and a lower class and if you understood statistics as well as you say you do, you'd know that's the case. Show me a curve that delineates a middle class, when 1% of the population owns damned near everything. Come on Joe. Do that.

      Houston....you really shouldn't mention flip-flops.

There is a long list of Obama flip-flops.

You obviously don't even know what a flip-flop is. A flip-flop is like when Romney called himself a "moderate with progressive views" when he was running for governor of Massachusetts and then claiming he was a "severely conservative governor" ten years later to win the teabag vote.

And Romney goes beyond mere flip-flops to lying about his flip-flops after he makes them, as when he went to staunchly supporting an anti-union law in Ohio, flipped to claiming it was up to voters when the polls indicated it would lose in a referendum (which it did), and then flopped back to supporting the law when he got a tongue-lashing from conservative bloggers for his flip-flop, claiming that he always had unwaveringly supported the law.

Nothing Obama has done comes close to Romney's flip-flops. Few other US politicians have come close in recent history, Democrat OR Republican. Romney is in a class(less) by himself.

I am not going to go back to see who wrote the comment about how Romney "doesn't make you feel that he is sincere" so will not get your vote. Making a person feel good about "buying" his product is the job of a salesman. Not to belittle used car salesman or snake-oil sellers, Obama learned his lessons well from those folks. Too many people voted for his because of the way he made them "feel."

Proof is needed for either side. Dig deep and read with an open mind.

To the person that says go read the Ryan plan, I agree - go read it. While you're at it, go read the Obama Health Care plan. That should make you"feel" like a snake-oil seller sold the biggest pack of ___— ever.

Both parties lie - that is the underlying meaning of politics. lol The middle class will carry the burden no matter who is elected. It has been this way since the politicians started taxing the people to pay for the Revolutionary War. If both sides continue, the U.S. will soon be bankrupt. The entire wealth of everyone that owns over a million dollars would not put a dent in the national debt. What language shall we all learn now? Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, Martian?

I see the standard crew is here - making the same stale comments. Each of you have become so predictable in your responses to anything that you could just list talking point numbers and save a lot of typing.

      Comment: Talking points 3,6,7,12
      Response: Talking points 2,8,10

Look, Mitt Romney is not offering any 'new vision' - he has not demonstrated that kind of imagination or intellect. Romney stands at a microphone and repeats talking points. Does Romney use a teleprompter or a rollo-dex to store the talking points?

President Obama has demonstrated that there are limits on what can be accomplished by government. Especially when that government is run by the unimaginative, intellectually lazy, and self-centered privileged. One only needs to look at the stale 'talking point' legislation trickling from the House. The Senate has attempted some meekly imaginative legislation - but - continues to maintain the status quo.

President Obama has attempted to be imaginative, at least. ACA (Obamacare) is a creative attempt to use the power of the government to improve lives. Unfortunately the law is defended with talking points 5,7,14 and opposed by talking points 1,4,9. Our discourse and thinking about government has not become less civil - it has become intellectually lazy.

We live in a 'government centered society'. That is the whole idea behind the Constitution. That is the whole idea behind rule of law. The Zimmerman-Martin incident only shows what happens when that 'government centered society' stops working. Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney trying to destroy that 'government centered society' - is simply trying to destroy America.

Of course, Ryan and Romney do not really want to destroy America - they are only repeating talking points 5,8,11. They represent the unimaginative and intellectually lazy politics of prime time television. The outcome of this election will be as predictable as the next unimaginative comment made by the candidates.

David Walker, Just a short response about your post at l.5 above. No, most Republicans do not take Ryan's Budget plan as the best out there. The way most of us conservatives take it is that it is only a proposal from the House. We expect the Senate to come up with their Budget Resolution as required by law, and then have the budget committees from the House and Senate to conference and work out a budget that can pass both the House and Senate. A Budget only requires a majority vote in both chambers and can not be filibustered in the Senate.

Absent of the Senate's obligation then Reid could adopt Obama's Budget as the Senate Budget and take it to conference with the House. But we know that will never happen because Obama's Budget is no better or no worse than Ryan's, neither gets the job done, but at least they tried. Now we just want the Senate to do it's job.

You know the lefts and rights assault on the Ryan and Obama Budgets means nothing since they will never pass as written.

David, I have read it and obviously you havent because you cant make the claims that you do. Ryan's plan doesnt have enough details except that he plans on eliminating deductions and loopholes so if you are making an opinion based conclusion that says he wont do it and the rich will get a tax cut, thats your opinion but if the discussion is based on the words said, then it would be a tax increase right? Are you agreeing at the moment that the rich pay a 25% effective tax rate? If so, dont you lose your argument that they arent paying more than the middle class and poor? So if Ryan's plan eliminates the loopholes, deductions and creates only 2 tax brackets which would apply to dividends and capital gains, isnt that a tax increase? So stop the whining and knee slapping and your partisan campaigning and try to have a real discussion. If you dont believe that Ryan or the GOP will truly reform the tax code pursuant to that goal to broaden the tax base and reduce the overall rate and increase revenue, thats your opinion but I think thats been the GOP plan for quite a while. It isnt crap just because you cant separate facts from your emotions isnt my fault. As always you tend to avoid my other comments like on corporate taxes because it doesnt suit your political agenda. David, I am fine with you being a campaigner for Obama, but lets just call it that. I dont want to have a discussion with someone like you because you just want to campaign. I am more interested in someone debating the policies and issues and starting with the relevant base line facts not partisan BS that you post.

Akeem, anywhere in my post did I make a conclusion or make an opinion on whether the rich should pay more in general or more than they do now. But I have answered your question many times on here and I would say absolutely the rich should pay more in tax than the poor and middle class and its impossible to say today that anyone as a group pays a fair share because the tax code is rife with unfairness and social engineering and bad public policy. We should have a fair, simple and yes very progressive tax system. Currently our tax policy provides welfare in the form of tax deductions for people who have kids, or own homes via a property tax deduction or mortgage interest deduction or are unselfish and give to charity and many other ridiculous things. We also allow seniors (who in the aggregate are very wealthy tax breaks for being old or blind). I am not against any of those things but it should influence tax policy. We also are creating a huge class warfare divide by allowing so many people off the tax rolls. Yes, people who work should contribute to our income tax system and federal budget (not payroll taxes because that funds their health and retirement benefits in which they will get it back and more) even if minimal amounts and the rich should pay a fair tax applied across a broad base. In terms of actual tax rates and brackets, I think we are already too high but if we eliminated the loopholes and deductions and reduced the rates, we could still make it a huge tax increase while lowering rates and making the system more fair for all.

But lets face it, we can talk tax policy until we are blue in the face and the rich can pay more but our real problem is government spending and the blame is both parties so I dont put the blame on Obama. Bush was such a bad spender, wars, prescription drug plans etc and Obama has just made it worse. No party has the political will to stop the spending spree. So tax reform has to come with spending reform and so far I have only seen the GOP face up to that fact. You might not like where the cuts come from, but so far democrats havent proposed any real cuts (just cuts to percentage growth).

      Kirk:

Since you're too damned lazy to go look here's a cut and paste straight from Ryan's Path to Destruction.

"Elimination of Double Taxation of Savings. The current system essentially taxes savings twice: individuals pay tax on their earnings and, if they choose to invest those after-tax funds, they pay another tax on the return from their savings (i.e. interest, capital gains, or dividends). This proposal eliminates the second layer of taxation. Not only is this fair to individual taxpayers, it also is good for the economy. Greater savings leads to more investment and higher rates of productivity. Higher productivity ultimately drives increased living standards. The plan also eliminates the estate tax, another form of double taxation that is particularly harmful to small businesses."

Black and white, you obtuse clod. Argue with Ryan.

Are you prepared to state for the readers here that as a Candidate and as the President that Barack Obama has never told a lie to the American people?

Here is a complete list of all men who never told a lie:

      Jesus.

So what is your point? I'm not even saying lying is always bad. Its a human thing to do, and depending on the situation, may be the wise thing to do, or may be the necessary thing to do. You know, like when Iran asks "how many nukes does Israel have?" The simple minded view that lying is always bad, or always avoidable, is not a workable model in the complex field of international politics.

Further, the definition of a lie will differ depending who you ask. Is it a lie when McDonald's says their food is delicious? Is it a lie when you tell your wife you love her, when you really don't? Is it a lie to round up to the nearest thousand? Is a wrong guess a lie? No, sir, you are not nearly as clever as you think. That's the truth.

You will notice that not one of the righties has taken a single issue with the substance of the $150,000 analysis.

You're on AM, I'll take issue with that misleading trash.

As Ezra Klein points out, the $150K number apparently comes from the Tax Policy Center analysis in Table T12-0079 (http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/numbers/displayatab.cfm?Docid=3337&DocTypeID=2). The title of this table is: House Republican Budget Plan without Unspecified Base Broadeners. So what these thoroughly biased jerks did was apply half the Ryan plan (i.e. lower tax rates) to compute the $150K number while not applying the other half of the Ryan plan (i.e. broaden the base) because those base broadeners wereunspecified.
Now, it's true that Ryan doesn't specify how the tax base would be broadened (and I'll address that below) but that doesn't give the Tax Policy Center license to put out a distorted number. In fact, the $150K number is meaningless because it is computed on the basis of the completely unrealistic scenario that zero base broadeners would be part of the final tax package.

The fact of the matter is Ryan's proposal is to lower the rates AND broaden the base – and to do it in a revenue neutral fashion as well. What that means is that in return for lower tax rates for ALL Americans, ALL Americans would also lose their sacred tax deductions. So when the left bandies about the $150K for millionaires number, what they (deliberately) ignore is the fact that these evil rich folks would also lose their ability to reduce their tax burden through a variety of deductions. Thus the $150K number does not account for the additional tax liability they would be subject to by virtue of no longer having deductions and the left is misleading the folks yet again. What a surprise!

On the point that Ryan does not specify the base broadeners, he's not supposed to specify them. The "Ryan Plan" is formally presented to the House in the form of a budget resolution as required by the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 – the same legal requirement the Democratic Senate has ignored for the last three years. The budget resolution is not a detail level document, it never has been and was never intended to be. What the budget resolution does is establish the broad framework for consideration of the annual federal budget, and it does this by establishing spending targets by budget category as well as an overall revenue target. Then it is the job of the subject matter authorizing and appropriating committees to do their thing at the detail level and live within the targets established by the budget resolution.

So on tax policy, for example, the budget resolution can establish a revenue target but it is up to the Ways and Means Committee to write the detailed tax legislation that would generate the revenues to meet that target. That's the way the process works, and the leftist goon squads are being thoroughly disingenuous to attack Ryan on this point. And while it would be fair to say that tax reform will be a heavy lift regardless of who is in power, it would be completely unfair to push numbers that deliberately ignore the effects of base broadening just because they are not yet specified at this point in the process. OMG, yet another surprise!!

Oh BTW, Ryan establishes revenue targets so as to generate revenues amounting to between 18% and 19% of GDP – which is the historical average going back to at least 1970. So on this point, Ryan is actually maintaining the status quo regarding aggregate federal tax revenues. Too bad the left never points that out.

      Albany Joe:

That's a pretty weak deflection. My point stands on capital gains being rolled into a new residence. I don't care whether you call it a rollover, an exclusion, or a double-decker hamburger, at least some of your capital gain is protected.

Again, your shelter is not an investment.

As far as the elimination of the zero per-cent tax bracket, where you say:

"Maybe it's just me, but, I'm pretty sure your post #1.81 statement:

"Would you please explain how it makes sense that your income from any source should escape taxation?"

pretty much rules out a 0% income tax bracket.

No Joe, it's just you. Please note the question mark at the end of the sentence. That said, let me make it clear that I favor a progressive income tax rate system, and you're damned right, mine would include a 0% tax bracket.

Listore--yes there is a growing income inequality but if you read the CBO report, its not because of tax policy. The largest drivers were the education gap as the wages of lower skilled workers has gone down or been stagnant as a result of productivity and technology changes along with a large influx of legal and illegal immigration. We have had a huge failure in our ability to reform and adopt our education system to this reality (I wonder what party blocks education reform?). Second, government assistance has created a bigger gap as social security and medicare are currently provided to the wealthiest segment in our population our seniors. That wasnt true in 1970. Finally tax policy and the elimination of cororate ownership in the early 80s where small business is owned 70% in pass through entities have skewed individual income reporting. So we have plenty of areas to address our growing income inequality besides tax policy including entitlements and education.

JAS1 That is tough to answer. I guess I would say I would accept it. Atleast, it shows both sides attempting to compromise and meet somewhere in the middle. Though, there are parts I do not like I am not one who would rather stand still than take a step in the right direction.

As to Kirk, I did not say you made any claim, it was the lack of a claim in your statement that bothers me. It is constantly done. I am not completely against social engineering in the tax code but that is an argument of personal opinion so no point in going there.

I understand your idea of eliminating deductions causes a net tax increase. My problem with deductions is many of these are capped or somewhat limited. Therefore the effects they would have on the middle class, especially thouse very close to being wealthy will be much greater (not nominaly of course) that its effect on the rich. That is why I am against it. It is essentially yes, lets tax the rich as long as we tax the middle class more. Any increases in tax should hit the rich at a higher percentage than others in order to be progressive. Those that pinch at the middle are not.

Many of the deductions "social engineering" make citizens not sacrifice what is best for them in the long run based on what is best for them in the short run. (capital gains, home ownership interest being deductible, credits for attending college, medical expenses being deductible). The problem is that those who write the tax code and abide by it take advantage of these allowances and that is where you see the "unfair" use.

David, Ryan is correct, he should eliminate the double taxation but besides eliminating the estate tax (which doesnt mean that the assets dont get taxed) he didnt provide details. So yes he could keep the corporate rates high and eliminate dividends and capital gains or he could reduce the corporate tax and raise the tax on dividends and capital gains. Most people and reformers and economists hope for the corporate tax reduction. If you werent such a partisan and actually tried to understand this stuff, you would know that at some point the combined tax on investment capital changes behavior and increases or decreases investment. I personally would prefer the reduction in corporate tax and higher dividends and capital gains tax. As for elimination of the estate tax that would come along with a carryover basis on the assets inherited so the beneficiarys would pay tax on the income realization which they dont do today.

Again David, you continue to try and defend the indefensible and instead of having a discussion you want to campaign. Instead of trying to "get me" and then use your avoidance and denial technique to brush off the critical substance of the discussion, why not just admit these are your opinions and quit trying to "embellish" the facts to your political partisan desires.

"Today we witnessed something truly remarkable. Barack Obama managed to out-do himself by uncorking what very well may have been the most dishonest, demagogic, and bitterly partisan speech of his presidency."

        I have just researched the problem with health care entitlements, and it is far worse than most people imagine. I used the President's own Budget (OMB) for 2013 as the basis for the basic information, and here are the results;

The projected Revenues for Medicare/Medicaid over the next 10 years are $2.823 Trillion.

The projected Costs for Medicare/Medicaid over the next 10 years are $11.134 Trillion.

That leaves a net Deficit in the Medicare/Medicaid programs of $8.311 Trillion, which is even greater than the total projected Federal Deficits of $6.684 Trillion over the next 10 years. In other words, if we did not have a Deficit from health care, we would have a budget SURPLUS of more than $1.6 Trillion over the next 10 years.

Obviously, something needs to be done with this HUGE 'entitlement problem', but Obama has conveniently ignored the problem in his Budget projections, and will demonize any Republicans that try to address the problem (Rep. Ryan).

It's a shame that the media does not give us the information that we need to make intelligent choices. Here's the link to Obama's Budget to verify - See Table S-5

Instead of both the left and right beating up on the Ryan and Obama's budgets, maybe they should use their energy to push the Senate into doing their job, which is to come up with their Budget resolution then conference with the house to work out the differences. The same arguments - double taxation - projected budget deficits - lies - more lies - and simple juvenile 'name calling'.

Income (whether actually earned or not) is NOT taxed twice. The system of taxation specifically designed to tax income more than once are sales taxes or VAT taxes. Sales taxes and VAT taxes are based on consumption - not earnings - so earnings are taxed with every transaction.

Projected budget deficits - from a government that cannot tell us how much it will be spending two quarters from now - are, at best, unreliable and are, at worst, a complete lie. If deficit projections were that reliable then forecasting where the DIJA will be ten years from now should be a piece of cake.

Based on averages, 10,000 Boomers will be retiring every day, seven days a week, for the next 19 years. 300,000 workers will be leaving the workforce each month for the next 19 years - on average.

          http://www.politifact.com/ohio/statements/2011/sep/26/john-boehner/house-speaker-john-boehner-says-10000-baby-boomers/

20 pct of people that are employed are aged 55 or more. One in five workers will be eligible for retirement over the next ten years.

          http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat03.htm

61 million workers (44 pct of our current labor force) will be eligible to retire over the next 20 years. Those 61 million workers will be eligible for retirement benefits - will be cashing out 401k and IRA plans - will be selling real estate and assets.

Somehow, I do not see how talking point chest thumping is addressing REAL issues.

David Walker "Any purchase in this country includes a taxes. They're a cost of doing business Joe. You're paying taxes one way or another."

Very true - actually, it's virtually every country, but in many of them, the taxes are 'hidden' (VAT) so the people have no idea how much they pay. It's common in most European countries for residents to pay about 50% of their income in various taxes, but they have no idea that the government takes about half of their income in taxes.

In the United States, the periods of time when we had the fastest economic growth was when government expenditures were about 30% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and in fact, there appears to be a close relationship between the level of government spending and economic growth. This relationship is well documented by the 'RAHN CURVE', which posits that the maximum economic growth rate for a country (where everybody shares a growing pie) is achieved when total government spending is between 15% and 25% of GDP. When spending exceeds that, it takes money that could be used for growth and expansion and uses it for well-intentioned social welfare programs, which lowers employment and economic growth.

Unfortunately, under Obama, government spending (including State & Local) is now about 45% of GDP, which translates to a slow economic growth rate of about 1.5% (which is what we have had for the last 3 years). Slow economic growth translates to fewer jobs, which leads to high unemployment - exactly what we have under Obama.

The writing is on the wall that Romney will be the nominee. But beating the likes of Santorum by 5% in Wisconsin when again outspending him by many multiples is really quite a poor showing. Once again, ROMNEY RAN BEHIND HIS POLLING NUMBERS - IN WISCONSIN AND MARYLAND. There is no enthusiasm for his warmed over platitudes. All of these posts above indicating that the budget deficit is large neglects the naked truth that it was very large when Obama took office (projected CBO budget deficit for Budget Year 2009 - which began in October of 2008 - was one trillion dollars). There is clearly enthusiasm for axe cutting by the right wing fringe - but everybody else wants a mixture of cuts and tax increases (with the increases mostly on the top 1%). Moreover, Romney can't criticize Obama for small decreases in the defense budget if he really want to improve the budget picture. Romney just wants to criticize any way he can - without regard to reality or even what he himself has said in the past. Interesting that Scott Brown will clearly run away from a former governor of Massachussetts. (I guess the Northeast is really off the table for Romney in the General.)

Here is a thought exercise for 'trickle down' economics. Let's say we have 1 rich guy and 99 not-so-rich guys. We have $100 million to hand out.

Let's give the $100 million to the 1 rich guy and allow the 99 not-so-rich guys to receive the profits when the money is spent. The 1 rich guy obtains $100 million in goods, services, or investments. If there is a 10 pct profit from that consumption - then $10 million is distributed among the 99 not-so-rich guys. The 99 receive a trickle from the money we have given to the 1 rich guy. That is why it is called 'trickle down' economics.

Let's give the $100 million to the 99 not-so-rich guys and allow the 1 rich guy to receive the profits when that money spent. Each of the 99 obtain $1 million in goods, services, or investments. With a 10 pct profit on that consumption - the 1 rich guy receives $10 million. The 1 rich guy still received more than anyone else - the 1 rich guy still got richer - even though the money was not given to him.

Open your minds and think about what this simple thought exercise demonstrates.

@Roy Wilson#1.166: Surely you know better than what you wrote. "Rahn Curve" theory, is in fact, noteworthy of Its relative concluding accuracy. It must be noted though, those factors that construct the conclusion are not relative based, but are specific to assuming "like" focused factors. Economically, the goal, or goal benchmark, must be shared by all who drive the respective parts toward the goal sought. Any deviation or cessation of any part will bring about incompletion of the whole. Throughout the Bush years, and into President Obama's term these factors have run every which way. Bush years, due to his tax cuts, wars, Housing bubble, etc. Bush generally conducted a "grab and run" type of administration, especially for the wealthy. President Obama, on the other hand, no matter what or how He urged attention and focus, He really got nothing more, at best, than half assed versions of what He knew was actually needed to begin the rebuilding process. This is all too evident, even in his signature health care package. To ever be able to be measured, building to, or maintaining economically, by the "Rahn Curve" the country must first have a President and Congress working progressively toward a mutual goal. Toward that, I contend President Obama and a democratically controlled Congress is an absolute must. Republicans have proven time and again they have no interest in any just balance, or even commonality of the economic whole. It is much the reason the republican brand is shot to hell.

But since you asked, perhaps the point is that if conservatives want to use the President's middle name to associate him with Muslims, then it's only fair that liberals use Romney's real first name to associate him with the big, stinky rat that he is. And if the subliminal image of Michael Jackson at his very creepiest, crooning the theme song to "Ben," happens to sneak in there at the same time ... well, let's just call it a two-fer.

Never should have happened but is there no forgiveness in your heart? I suspect we all did stupid things 25 years ago.

Probably, but in my own case I can pretty much vouch for the fact that none of them involved intentional (or clueless) cruelty to animals.

People who are cruel to animals tend to be cruel in other relationships as well. That's another one of those facts I suspect you'll try to take issue with, without citing any authority, and I'll wonder why.

Not to mention the fact that Romney is completely incapable of accepting responsibility for any of his actions, such as the dog, or Romneycare, or all those people who lost their jobs because of Bain.

Why, to hear Willard tell it just last night, that was a GOOD thing because the "free market" made him rich, even though it turned those people out on their collective ... ears.

Well, enough about Willard. He's toast, anyway. Tell you what, though. Why don't you tell us about some of the stupid things YOU did 25 years ago.

I promise to forgive you, and I'll bet they'd be illuminating.

Oh, dang it, Bill, don't you know I hate it when you confront me with facts. I'll have to go back and study this more.

So on this point, Ryan is actually maintaining the status quo regarding aggregate federal tax revenues. Too bad the left never points that out.

Yeah, and oh, by the way, I heard another fact he never points out, which is, namely to wit, not only does his plan not balance the budget till sometime around 2040, it does NOT THING ONE to reduce the deficit.

            So there. ;-)

            Albany Joe --

The rollover provision has been gone from the tax code for about 15 years. It was replaced in 1997 by a $500,000/$250,000 gain exclusion that you can use every two years. I've used it several times.

We don't know how big a tax cut ALL Americans will get, we don't know what the base broadeners will be, and we have no guarantees that the deductions that are taken away are actually either actually taken away or are the ones that will really affect the 1 percent, rather than everyone else.

We don't know how all this will play out in the actual appropriations and ways and means and other machinations that go on all the time.

In other words, we liberals can't criticize what we don't know.

And as far as I can tell, you can't defend it, either.

Houston: You didn't INTEND to claim he was smart, but you accidentally inferred exactly that in heat of your liberal-bashing frenzy.

              No, you inferred it.

Nope. You claimed that "libs" aren't smart enough to originate something by themselves that Klien wrote in the same sentence you claimed he was "far left". Not all liberals are far left, but those on the far left are liberals. Therefore YOU are saying that Klien is a liberal who is smart enough to come up with something all by himself, contradicting your own idiotic rant.

I think Klein is as dumb as a rock.

And you're as dumb as a whole box of rocks stacked on top of a box of hammers.

Anna Molly, I must be amazingly dense and not very articulate because what you said is what I have been trying to say on this and many other issues. Putting Ryan aside, many GOP legislators have advocated a broadening of the base that increases revenue overall and increases tax on the rich by making it more fair and equitable in application. A lower tax rate but an overall increase to the effective rate has to be a good thing. On the other hand, I dont think the base should be broadened with just the top brackets as we should reduce rates and make it fair for everyone. I just finished by best friend's tax return. His wife is a teacher and he owns a muffler shop. Combined gross income is $80k but because they live in a small Illinois town, they have an acre of land with a great house, a Wisconsin summer home, two ski boats, a boat, Yukon, Mercedes and a Harley. One kid in college. His federal tax withholding was $9,200 and because of the refundable credits, his refund is $9,500. He is getting welfare back from the government with all of his deductions and loopholes and pays zero tax. I hope the wealthy are willing to pay more tax in a fair system but we need to also address out of control government spending and change the spending culture.

I'm tired of seeing the progressives and liberals make really dumb decisions regarding entitlements that they later have to 'fix' with policies that make things even worse. I've been watching since the 1970's. Most attempts just make things worse with even more people bellying up to the government bar for more freebies as it ends up being. This absolutely cannot be sustained and we will end up having to force people into situations the progressives and liberals have so diligently tried to keep people from experiencing.

Too bad liberals, your policies suck, you can't take money from the 'rich' and give it to people who refuse to contribute or give back. There is only so much money that this can be done with and it will be gone soon! Stop promising freeloaders money you don't have!

@Phil-3222496 -- The 1970s 'fix' for Social Security was the 401k - IRA deferred income investment programs. As people retire - and cash out those retirement assets - they pay the deferred income taxes. The original idea was that revenue from those deferred taxes would be used to pay Social Security benefits.

Of course, now that those tax revenues are needed - it must be time to change the contract. But that is not the REALLY scary part of the story. Those deferred income investment programs amount to $4.9 trillion invested on Wall Street. Altogether there are $17 trillion of retirement assets invested on Wall Street.

                http://www.ici.org/research/retirement/retirement/ret_11_q4

That is almost half the money invested on Wall Street. Over the next twenty years - somewhere between a third and a half of all the value on Wall Street will be sold. Wall Street is facing the same problem that the government is facing.

just to respond to the "plagiarism" comments about the $150,000 analysis.....since you keep accusing everyone of ignoring you, which they only do because it's simply misdirection anyway rather than a substantive response.

Nonetheless, I'll respond so you'll shut up. You're wrong.

See, if you'd read the article above and bothered clicking on the link to Obama's speech, you would have been directed to the full transcript of his speech on the white house press site. That quote was NOT from the Washington Post but directly from Obama's mouth. And I believe Beverly clearly said "Obama broke it down" both in the beginning of her post and directly before quoting the $150K portion of his speech. She clearly attributed to the info to Obama, which was the source.

anna (1.122) -- I do know that Willard is the Governor's first name. Like many, he has a middle name as well, Mitt.

Each of us over the years tend to select the name we prefer to use, in the case of the Governor he chose his middle name. Why many here refuse to use his preferred name is, in my opinion, simply a display of juvenile behavior by what I imagine to mostly be adult-aged individuals.

You will most likely continue in your ways but, who knows, one day the respect due a former Governor of one of our great states will be offered.

To the right wing supporters. / The standard of living of the majority of Americans is declining. The standard of living of the rich is growing by levels not experienced in this country ever. Even the Robber Barons would be envious. Most other industrial countries are increasing the standard of living of their citizens,I admit by controlling the excesses of the super rich. Hopefully by peaceful means, but if that fails it often will be by violent means. We pride ourselves on being a country of a Democratic rule, but this nation has resorted to violence before. We do not want to return to early and violent times.

I sure hope so. I always thought Governor Moonbeam was undervalued.

By the way, I believe the President prefers to be called Barack, not Hussein. By your calculation, those who call him Hussein exhibit similar juvenile behavior. I hope that we can agree on that much, at least.

And just so you know, I don't normally call Romney Willard. I did that just for you.

You probably will not be appropriately appreciative of my consideration, but that's okay. I'm a liberal, and I forgive you.

Sounds like the GOP's not very enthused about Romney, but he'll do. After all, with the right-wing GOP, it's party first, people last. And with the Tea Party, it's me first, and you, never.

Wrong. The true nut is Barack Obama. He stands there being critical of the Ryan budget, when he has none of his own to fall back on. No Democrat wants to support Obama's budget, they don't want to be seen supporting a deficit busting calamity and have to run on that vote.

Wrong...wrong! The Democrats shot down the budget plan because of the poison pills (Republican candy) that the republicans insisted on. Even if it tastes good, if it will kill you an intelligent person won't eat it.

Obama’s harsh attack on Ryan-Romney radicalism

                          By Greg Sargent

Here’s something both sides can agree upon: Paul Ryan’s budget — whose broad strokes have been endorsed by presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney — represents the GOP’s main offering in the big ideological argument that will decide this election and frame the big choice Americans face about the future of the country.

Whether you call it “radical,” or “bold and courageous” (the terms favored by conservatives), the Ryan plan is more than a budget. It’s a set of priorities, and a vision — of the rightful distribution of wealth and the tax burden, and of government’s proper role in guarding against the excesses of unfettered free market capitalism — that will constitute the foundation of the GOP case this fall.

In a speech today, President Obama will treat it as exactly that. And he’ll attack it pretty aggressively, describing it as “radical” and “thinly-veiled social Darwinism.” These remarks seem designed to check a number of boxes. First, Obama is arguing that combatting inequality is not only essential as a matter of basic fairness, but because inequality hampers economic growth — a case he hasn’t made as effectively as he might.

Second, Obama isn’t just attacking the conservative economic vision as “radical”; he’s making the case that it has already failed us. If Romney is able to persuade the electorate of his basic economic competence — a real possibility — the election could turn on Obama’s ability to persuade the electorate that we’ve already tried the “trickle down” solutions Romney is offering, and that they simply haven’t worked.

Third, the election will turn partly on voters’ gut sense of which man has a clearer sense of where the country and the world are headed — hence the indictment of the Ryan/Romney lack of investment in education and research. The oft-repeated phrase “an economy that’s built to last” advances two arguments designed to make the election about something more than the state of the economy on Election Day 2012: Republican solutions have historically left the economy and country on a flimsy foundation; and they demonstrate no concrete vision for the future.

Obama’s speech will likely be greeted by a great deal of whining about its “negative” and “partisan” tone. But politics is supposed to be about an aggressive clash of visions, and it looks like that’s exactly what we’re going to get today.

And then occasionally the real Obama shows up.

And the best you can come up with is “He’s negative and partisan. He’s telling the truth about us. How dare he.”

Jody---President Obama is just getting warmed up for his re-election campaign. He has spent the last 4 years working hard for all Americans while the Republicans took shots at him and refused to compromise on any of his proposals, even ones they had supported in the past. I imagine he has 4 years worth of things to say to them and a campaign platform to say them on. I can't wait!

So that's why Obama will raise a billion dollars for his campaign. Romney's offshore accounts are perfectly legal. If you had a large amount of money wouldn't you try to save as much as you could or would you just have it in a savings account and pay the maximum.

How much is a fair share? We pay taxes so we can fund our government. They in turn provide services for us. Romney pays millions in taxes every year, how much do you pay? He'll pay more money into the bottomless pit and just what will he receive? I bet he's never applied for food stamps or welfare, yet he has paid far more than most Americans. So let me ask you what exactly is his fair share?

Maybe we should nominate a lowlife who's never had a good paying job. Maybe that person will have a better grasp on the life of an average American, but I don't think so.

They all say one thing but only further the agenda of the industrial military complex. Behind closed doors they laugh at the American people who have the wool pulled over there eyes. WAKE UP PEOPLE!! Let your egos go... quit fighting with each other and lets stick it to these idiots by voting away from the Democratic and Republican parties!!! They are not giving us a choice because they are the same. What kills me is deep down people know this.I mean Mitt Romney are you kidding me?? He is a complete A hole... and Obama has already passed some of the worst laws ever written. Resigned the patriot act, healthcare mandate, The ability to jail American citizens without due process. Not to mention bailouts for the richest.Until we wake up we will continue to be there pawns. Without us they have no power. We have the power not them... we just need to realize that.

Yeah, just because it's illegitimately legal- because his ilk lobbied for tax code changes to help only them, at the expense of the rest of us- then it's fine with you? That doesn't sound like a true Teabagger to me!

He's nothing more than a lying tax cheat who put thousands of American workers in profitable companies out of jobs to make huge income for himself. If you have any respect for that then you're a part of the problem, and a hell of a distance from the solution!

It's a simpleton that thinks welfare, food stamps and the like add up to anywhere near what Mitt Romney has cheated the country he claims he loves out of with his mounting tax schemes. And Corporate welfare is quite all right to the Commieservatives who try as they are required to compare the two, is nothing short of Psychotalk.

It's obvious that it's your side that's nominating a low life here- and America sees it for what he is- look at any poll, including Rasmussen!

Again: The Party of NO has no electable candidate running for President. Period.

Which is it? Romney or Obama?

America needs a face lift from the 3yrs of not knowing which direction this Country is taking; still trying to solve problems. It is a Crap Shoot for the Presidency---who knows.

It all depends on what is going on before the Election. It is the Economy, Petroleum prices, and the Global Economy---Afghanistan. What is going to happen to Afghanistan, if someone new comes in?

Now the other GOP Candidootes should get out of the race, and wimp to someone else. I'm tired of hearing all the whining from the GOP candidates blasting each other. No wonder Newt Ginrich's wife's hair is like a helmet---she can't stand it either.

How do you know ex Pres. Bush will be listed as the worst President, under the circumstances of having to endure real pressure/taking action under the 9-11 Attack on America. Something that has never been done before. Terrorists attacking on America for the first time ever. War declared on American Soil..

As more time goes by, someone else's name may come up---it's all Speculation.

The crystal ball may be clouded; the one you are looking in to. America was built by our Founding Fathers giving the Government, and all people a Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

You just exercised Freedom of Speech, a priceless privilege

The Presidents who have served office or serving office, personally know if it was they who were the worst Presidents.

Just more spinning, and back peddling when they make severe mistakes. The "Elite" group of Pres's also think the American Public is stupid. NOT---Presidents live in a bubble, after entering office, not being able to relate to the average person's concerns, or economic situations, due to Policies they have chosen, and hurredly put through Congress, without Congress members having the time to read every single word.

The President of the United States is an alternative to a Monarchy upon entering Office.

Is the GOP primary over yet? Establishment republicans certainly hope it is and declared victory last night and this morning. Romney won by only a few points in Wisconsin, and won Maryland and DC handily. Of course, he should have won DC easily because Santorum wasn't on the ballot. But has Mitt Romney really locked up the nomination? There are southern state primaries coming later in April and in May--Santorum country. While Romney may be on target to have the most delegates, Santorum can still create havoc for the Romney campaign.

Santorum vows to keep going and he probably will because he really does think that Romney is not a "real conservative"; that matters to those "real conservatives". It is doubtful that he cares how losing his home-state of Pennsylvania will appear or is it possible that home-state win/loss only matters to the pundits and those who want the campaign done. Gingrich and Paul seem to have disappeared from the stage. No speeches last night; Newt didn't even have an appearance while Paul was speaking in Chico, CA. As First Read noted, the writing is on the wall; but that doesn't mean it's legible.

One thing that should be obvious to pundits, the media, and to political junkies is that no matter how the GOP strategists and message pushers slice and dice this campaign, Mitt Romney is still a weak GOP candidate. He had one serious challenger, Jon Huntsman, and one who simply wanted to keep the libertarian message alive and push it into the mainstream GOP, Ron Paul. The rest of the candidates really were clown side-show material or as Ann Coulter would call them, "charlatans". Based on who was running against him, Mitt Romney should have wrapped up this nomination by the end of February or early March. Why he has not been able to do that is the subject of much discussion by the right, the left and the center. The simple answer that even Romney should have known from his 2008 campaign and from his struggles this year is that people simply do not like him.

Jody "people simply do not like him". That's your opinion, Jody and speak for yourself. Do you think if you say enough time you're going to convince somebody to not like him?

You say he should have had it 'wrapped up" by Feb or Mar. Really? He would have had to have gotten EVERY vote to do that. Even your hero Obama didn't get it done until June, when Hilary dropped out.

You all keep on spouting your nasty, unfounded remarks and keep up your wishful thinking. You have a good teacher in your hero Obama who whines and demeans those who disagree with him. With his three public attacks on the Supreme Court, the man should scare the hell out of you. IF he gets re-elected, he'll probably try to abolish the SC. It gets in the way of the king.

dirt, sorry if the truth hurts but people do not like Mitt Romney. It isn't my opinion, it's what the GOP voters have said as each subsequent Knight on a White Horse rode in to save the GOP. The point you miss is that with such poor other GOP candidates like Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Gingrich, Santorum, Romney should have won as quickly and easily as McCain did. There is no comparison of the 2012 GOP primary to the 2008 democratic primary, those who claim there is are simply wishing it were true.

DB Akron, I don't really care what any candidates religion is but the fact is Romney is a Mormon and President Obama is a Christian regardless of the chatter from those who refuse to accept the truth about Obama's faith for what it is.

Incidentally, dirt, why is the GOP can complain about those dreadful "activist justices" yet when democrats and President Obama say something, conservatives get all huffy? Just sayin'--to put it in terms that might make sense for you, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

But in Romneys defense--the trees are just the right height. Now back to bashing Obama to deflect the fact he has no PLAN AT ALL, but to cut the taxes for the rich even more, and take corporate tax rates to zero.

Hmm-Since companies like GE paid zero taxes and got millions back from the government, I wonder if we should just start giving the corporate execs multibillion dollar taxpayer subsidies like we do to the multibillion dollar profit making oil companies. We can just deposit the checks right into their accounts.

The Republican wet dream-unbridled corporate welfare and more tax breaks for the filthy rich.

Jody---great post. Seems to me that an additional impact of the Citizens United decision is that the money that flowed to Gingrich & Santorum kept their campaigns alive longer than they might otherwise have been---gave them a chance to take shots at Romney and gave more voters an alternative to Romney, which they took.

Of course, it also allowed Romney's Super PAC to carpet bomb the airwaves with negative ads and STILL he tends to win only narrowly. They may like him as a person but they don't seem to like him as a candidate.

Roman Catholics do not own the doctrines and definitions of Christianity .. if they did, the Greek Orthodox and the Anglican Churches would also be considered un-Christian.

Has anyone ever thought that maybe there's a "hidden" Democrat group who are paying Santorum, Paul, and Gingrich to keep running with Romney? It would be interesting to know....they are making him spend more and more of his campaign funds to keep them from winning, thus, depleting what he'll have to spend to run against Obama. I think it would be funny to find out that that's the truth (but it probably isn't....but makes you think, doesn't it)?

Anyway, as long as the other clowns keep running against Romney....he won't have time to gear up for his run against our President! He won't win anyway, but these primaries are weakening him immensely. He keeps saying stupid things with every win.....and it can only get worse for him as time goes on!!

That's a good read IR....thank you for posting it. Yesterday's speech by President Obama, was one of the best he's given. He spelled out in very clear terms what the differences are between both parties. And while he didn't say it, I will:

Anyone who falls for this budget and votes Republican, is not of sound mind. If you vote Republican, and consider yourself of a clear mind, you then must be a member of the 1%.

This budget will rip apart all the props that have helped make this country great by helping to grow the middle class, for without a strong representation in our democracy we will not prosper to survive.

Looks like the bracket is set and the game is on. If the president wishes to assault Ryan's budget, it's pretty easy to reply using his budget:

414-0! Bipartisan agreement that the president's budget sucked! OR

414-0! Bipartisan agreement that the president is fiscally irresponsibile and incompetent OR

414-0! Something no F.I.B. can erase!

"And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform;robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on. Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America's priorities. Instead, interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans; a debt tax that Washington doesn't want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies." --Barack Obama (The most two-faced, hypocritical, flip-flopping, and divisive president in American history)

I used to be a Truman or Kennedy democrat, but that ilk seems to be all but extinct. The divisive nature of the modern left drove me away--too much anger and hatred. Kennedy inspired people--I remember his inaugural address even though I was just a young kid. People rallied around that man. Too bad he had to step into Vietnam.

I do. Somewhere in PA - still thinking he can win somehow and thinking if he joins Santorum, Santorum should be VP. I'm sorry, but the time for him to think about joining Santorum in some capacity was 4 weeks ago while Santorum was still rising and he was dropping off. Is stubborness has clearly caused Both him and Santorum to lose some of the weaker support that Romney is now bleeding off both of them.

The inevitability of Romney getting the nomination for the Republicans is a given. But we can only hope the fringe right wingers continue to remind the voting public why the GOP has become a toxic bane on our society. From Santorum almost slipping the N-word into one of his speeches to Newt pandering to special interests for self aggrandizement. From Rick Perry proving how unprepared for government office some elected officials are to Palin hinting yesterday, that things could still change. It amazes me that anyone can take the Republicans as a whole and not be concerned about their motives and commitment to serve all the citizens of our country.

I hope that Newt, Santorum and maybe even Sarah will join in the fray to continue to remind all of us, how bad things could be with a Republican in the White House. Along with Mitt, they are all doing the best possible job of campaigning for President Obama every time they open their mouths.

Keep it coming Republican candidates, keep the show going. You must represent those fringe elements so all those wacko ideas can all be included in the Republican platform for 2012.

Meanwhile, Yahoo just announced it is cutting 1400 jobs, somewhere around 6000-9000 retail stores will be closed this year, over one million homes will be foreclosed on, and despite actually NOT counting people that are NOT working just because they aren't drawing unemployment, the "official" unemployment numbers are STILL abysmal.

I think it is appalling theta the Republican Establishment is cheating Ricky Santorum out of his rightful place in the nominating process. Run ricky Run.

Keep up the fight (If Newt gets out of the way Ricky will pick up most of his support and we will have a real contest!)

Don't give in Ricky, RUN RICKY RUN

Keep the pressure on, debate Romney one on one...Keep speaking out if for no other reason than comic relief

                                          Make Romney SPEND!

                                          Don't give into that RINO!

                                          Run Ricky Run!

The longer you keep up the pressure, the longer you force the spending, the longer you deny Mitty the RNC money...the better. It is all about integrity!

And It makes us Democrats soooooo unhappy.

Run Ricky RUN...Get that Nomination! I support you 100% as the Republican Nominee!

Personally I think us Democrats should send you some cash to keep you going!

Of course in November we will laugh our way to a second Obama term!

BTW, wanted to say THANK YOU for thinking for yourself and not simply swallowing the BS people try to feed you from either side. It's important that we question the narratives because reality is probably somewhere in between if we look hard enough.

They ran a news blurb last night on WDIV channel 4 about a Detroit employer looking to hire people for jobs @ $14 to $32 an hour. They had calls from many people but had no call backs, of the people that showed up all of them told them that they wont take the employment because they are collecting Unemployment and working under the table so they dont really need a job. They then talked to the Director of unemployment who stated "We are currently investigating a large amount of people taking advantage of this emergency funding" "People must be looking for work and not using unemployment as a way of life." This is a major issue in Detroit, a lot of people dismiss it as false.

Clearly Willard Romney will lose to Barrack Obama, since he's nearly ten points behind in the polls.

You are correct, the first line was my optimism and opinion.

The second line was my discussion point: why does Obama trounce all GOP hopefulls in polls, but no one really talks about that....why?

It seems to me the media wants to keep it a race, but the reality is, people overwhelmingly want the President instead of one of these 1% puppets who tell lies, have no solid positions and present no comprehensive solutions.

D-1129384, conservatives only believe the polls are legitimate when they favor them; it's part of their DNA. When President Obama was down in the polls, they were all over FR like flies on honey. They suffer a similar disconnect when the jobs numbers are released and the unemployment numbers: those are bogus, don't ya know; they were real when Bush was President but now they are some government plot to deceive people. Same thing with the stock market. When it was down, it was President Obama's fault but now not a peep or it's because business knows a republican will win in November.

Hello kids . . . long time no see! Just had a quick quote to share from the governor of Tennessee, Republican Bill Haslam:

"In an interview with WPLN 90.3 FM, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam defended his plan for spending some of the state's higher-than-anticipated revenue and admits that he's "adding to the size of government."

"There are some real needs out there to fund," Haslam told WPLN. "You know, I'm a conservative Republican, and I don't apologize for that, but I don't think government is evil. I don't even think it's a necessary evil. I think it's a critical way that we provide needed services."

                                          http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/blog/morning_call/2012/04/haslam-defends-growth-of-tennessee.html

Good old fashioned common sense has a way of bringing folks together . . . wouldn't it be great if we could move on to finding the best ways for our government to help solve problems instead of wasting all of our time pontificating about the "role of government"?

                                          Yes it would.

Of course they don't actually talk about OBAMA and what he's done to this country. Instead all we hear is about how Romney will lose.

Reps pick Romney....Prob a given at this point, this infuriates the Far Right Social Moron elements. They look around and find the "Americans Elect" party, the Internet party that is already on the ballot in 20 states but is close to being certified nationally (80% of the way) so that it will appear in all 50 states.

Ron Paul (No I am not supporting him in any way) is the number one 'followed' possible nominee on the Americans Elect Party site by a margin of 3X the number two possibility. Ron Paul has nothing to lose, this is his last hurrah anyway, so he takes that nomination, he picks up his 'cultists' and a few of the unhappy right wingers. He skims off 5-7% of the vote from Romney. I think the nominee of that party will be a Right Winger no matter what. And with instant ballot access in all 5 states, some ego maniac like Paul, Gingrich will grab it. If for no other reason than jut to sell some books and look relevant.

He insures a Democrat win. Even without this I think Obama will win. This is just more insurance.

The Rep party will split either by a third party run or by the Far Righties just staying home

To all you repubs griping about Obamas speech yesterday, you better get your seat belts on. By the time Obama gets through with them in the fall the repub candidate for president and all the little repub congressmen will be nothing more than a large pile of toxic waste. Running the country into the ground has consequences. Lying to the people to get a goofy group of nutcases elected to congress in 2010 has consequences. Giving endless tax breaks to your "keepers", fighting unnecessary and unfunded wars, and giving billions away in unfunded medicare benefits to seniors has consequences.

Well folks, judgement day is nigh, and it ain't gonna be pretty for the repubs. Better get what you can now boys cause the party is just about over.

Why does everyone hate Obama so? I will admit he has done some things I do not agree with however people seem to forget HE did not start TWO wars that broke our economy and caused not a recession but a depression by a gentler name. He did not deregulate the financial markets to such a degree we had a pack of Madoff's running wall street. HE did not raise the issue of women's health weighed against religious clap trap disguised as a "moral" issue. He did not start the systematic destruction of the constitution with the "Patriot act", the TSA, and a secondary legislative body called SCOTUS.

It is my firm belief the "hatred" that is spewed by Republicans and Teapartyites is nothing more, nothing less than racism. It is disguised but from all that has been written they are against persons of color and women. Smacks of ISLAMIC beliefs don't you think?

So suggestion - and only a suggestion - "people of color" and women of all colors do NOT vote for any Republican or Tea Party candidate if you want a recognizable USA when the dust settles.

Actually, the "entitlments" in this nation cost in just ONE year, what the entire 9 years of the Iraq war cost, but don't the let the FACTS get in the way of your garbage.

And actually he along with EVERY DEMOCRAT blocked regulation of Fannie and Freddie, who are the direct cause of the recession we are in.

As of the "Patriot Act", if you check, you lefties screamed about "Constitutional Rights" when it was passed. You know, a law that allowed the Federal Government listen in on phone calls to and from terrorists and to detain Americans if they were involved in terrorism.

But you didn't say a SINGLE THING when Holder came out and said that it was actually "legal" to ASSASSINATE American terrorists, did you? And you didn't say a thing when DEMOCRATS with their super-majority Congress jammed down this nation's throat a "law" that said not only that EVERY American was required to buy a product/service, but even told this nation EXACTLY what they would purchase, or be fined for.

And it's really nice of you to not talk to ALL Americans with your "recommendation" at the end, but to instead put out RACIST FILTH.

Another typical, "tolerant", "open", "progressive", liberal you are.

One, here's your race card back. It doesn't work anymore. People are sick and tired of Dems making false claims of racism. There's REAL racism out there; believe I know that on a very personal basis. It needs to be addressed. But, RACISTS like YOU, who throw that word around as an excuse to demonize people who disagree with Obama, set the cause back 150 years. thanks but no thanks, those of us who have to fight the real fight DON'T need RACISTS like YOU anywhere near us.

My My ChariLM, got your knickers in a knot girl?

                                            1. The cost of war has been calculated at $2B/day or in your 9 years of war $6.7 TRILLION as against $584 Billion (taking your rant literally) that is comparing apples to apples the wars cost 1.25 times SS however you forget WE PAY INTO SS SEPARATELY FROM TAXES and YES we are FORCED to do so (I can not understand why we are forced to pay into SS yet the Obama Healthcare plan is up before SCOTUS) As a matter of fact I do not understand why we taxpayers are forced to aid and abet such behaviour as recently found in the GSA- don't know about you but I am pissed at working all year so that 340 GSA ass holes can have $44 breakfasts in Henderson NV.!

If the rest of your rant is made from the same data then you are simply delusional. What is truely tragic is you and your ilk can not look at the facts objectively and then vote for what is best for your children's future. It is certain your kids with your values instilled in them will not be there for you in your dottage when you need a hand. It is also damn certain the government safety net, if you get your way, will also be gone. just leave us your address under the bridge where you will be living (if you are) when you reach retirement age.

I had a brother in law that was against Obama care until he lost his job (and insurance) then got sick and hit with a $19,000 bill for an outpatient procedure, funny he is all for Obamacare now. Wonder why that is-can you explain that?

Dirt you might not like the racism issue however you failed to mention in your rant that women have been equally violated inside the beltway and in many states of the union including Virginia. The only conclusion I can reach, assuming people with brains running for office have no plan to better our condition and therefore to deflect the electorate mentality with assinine platforms based on a mass hatred of Obama's policies, sexual mores of women with ambassador Limbaugh acting as the mouthpiece, and healthcare dependent upon someone else's personal religious beliefs is abhorrently wrong. If you can't handle the truth I forgive you. I do ask that you consider the effect of hidden racism on decisions that will effect your kids and grandkids.

Because it is spend spend spend and tax tax tax. Even the Democrats wouldn't go along with something like that in an election year.

Obama yesterday put out all kinds of fearmongering about people getting benefits "cut". Those benefits that would be "cut" were based on HIS budget numbers, not anything that Republicans have in the House budget.

Obama LIED yesterday and yet the liberal press not only don't call him on it, they actually report it as some kind of "facts".

Yes, Cheryl, convenient that when he was talking about what would be cut was the increases he had in his budget. He's so dishonest.

And, his attack on the Supreme Court should scare the hell out of people. Second time he's down that with an audience. He also said in an interview a while back that he could have done more but "the Court gets in the way." I think he's pissed because they won't let him wear a crown.

That wasn't the President's budget they voted on. It was a political ploy before voting on the Ryan "Weapons of Mass Destruction" Plan. It was a weapons of mass distraction vote on an alternative budget proposal based on President Obama's 2013 budget plan by Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C. It was not President Obama's entire budget proposal. Blatant mendacity by the GOP.

"So I would urge my Republican colleagues, no matter how strong they feel — you know, we have three branches of government: we have a House, the Senate, we have a President, and all three of us are going to have to come together and give some. But it is playing with fire to risk the shutting down of the government, just as it is playing with fire to risk not paying the debt ceiling." CNN, January 30, 2011.

                                            Hello liberals,

My first question do you see how stupid Obama is yet? Lets get a little history lesson in shall we. Obama has yet to pass a budget, he has stopped the shipment and the production of oil, lets look at that for a moment, under president Bush gas went up to five dollars a gallon over 8 years and then fell to 1.50 a gallon at the end of his term. When obama took office the national average was about 1.63 a gallon, in three years Obama has brought the price of gas up to $4.00 a gallon. There is no reason for this high price in gas we are only fighting one war. If he would have passed the key stone pipe line he would have brought down gas prices.

Now lets see here, Obama has told the Sepreme court that they do not have the power to over turn a bill.... thats their job. The bill will be viewed as un-constitutional you can not make a person buy something they dont want, last time I checked that was called a dictatorship.

Obama has had repeatedly failed policies, under his administration the corporate tax rate is number one in the world! no wonder we cant compete in the world market. Mitt Romney is the only hope for the American people, Obama you will lose.

You do realize that the POTUS does not set gas prices, right? It's done by the speculators. Can you specifically name which of Obama's policies which allegedly "failed?" By the way, we can't compete in the world market because we keep sending our jobs to Asia. Expect more of this under Romney.

Under the original consitution, they don't have the power to overturn law. They certainly DO NOT have the power to elect a president and they did that too. They gave themselves the power and that is why a lifetime appointment of elitist judges does not serve the People. They need to be elected on the same schedule as Governor's so they can't serve more than 2 years under any President.

SCOTUS has done more damage against the People and laying the groundwork for their Citizens United ruling since they elected Shrub in 2000. This latest ruling is a coup on our First Amendment Rights against illegal search and seizure. Their promotion of 'Guilty until Proven Innocent' is far too costly for the American people to support, both financially and with the complete loss of basic democratic rights. This is fasicism in motion and fascisim only works for the people at the top, the 1% and SCOTUS that is serving them.

Jobs, going to asia hum, what president that the law that allowed that to happen let me think Clition. What you all dont realize is that president has a lot to do with gas prices as soon has he did not pass the key stone pipe line gas went up about 10c thats a lot. Obamas failed policy, holy crap guys his energy policy is awful. Lets jack up gas prices and force electric cars down everyone throats. When he bailed out the auto industry this is what he should have done, he should have not "given" money to the American auto make he should have given the money to the American consumer. Now this is how he should have done it. If he would have taken the money he had given the auto makers and sent it out to the people in the form of a check that was allocated by how much you made and how many dependents you had, and put a mandate on it that said you had to spend that money on a american fuel saving car, and you had to file the check in about one month it would have safely boosted the auto industry. HIs idea for cash for clunkers was simular but not the right approach. Under Obama the amount of spending has sent our country in a downward spiral, our dollar is not trading at what it did in the early 90's. If you were to look at it this way the demand for the US dollar is down and we have an increased supply. This happened to germany in ww2, you cant print your way out of debt. By the way the sepreme court has been overturning laws since 1883, they are not going away. Obama will lose this election!

You're a little red person who worships the ground Fox blares across. You have no integrity so making up "facts" is what you consider intellectual. And, the fact is, you don't know squat!

                                            Obama/Biden 2012 by a landslide!!!

John I dont know where you pull that BS from.. WE are EXPORTING OIL. That means we have a SURPLUS,,So tell us when and how Obama stopped shipments ?? Is this how Romney plans on winning ? By telling Lies ? The price of oil went up as soon as Republicans and Romney started talking WAR IN IRAN. The Xl pipe line is for EXPORTING OIL to Foreign countries..WE ALREADY HAVE A SURPLUS so explain why the price of gas is still going UP???? BTW Obama DID NOT GIVE money to GM...It was a LOAN... Is that too much for your brain to handle ? Obama WILL WIN AGAIn.

You do realize that absolutely none of that oil is going to stay in the USA don't you? I mean, you couldn't be so ignorant to not know that would you? People like you give idiots a bad name. All you want to do is hear yourself not actually put something of value out there. Can you back up ANYTHING that you say or is it all just BS? I'm sure it's all BS, you don't seem very credible.

He is the worst President we have ever had ....He will lose on the issues. No amount of chin up posturing or finger pointing will save him......He is finished. It is you who are living in some socialistic dreamland that used to be AMERICA.

Not with Romney it wont. He will never get the chance. Like i said, he WILL lose. There arent enough votes for him. Being a Mormon will hurt him the most. I dont dislike the guy or anything, i just think he will have a hard time getting the votes because of his faith and his enormous wealth. I turns alot of people off.

No we will not move we sill stand our ground we will not have our civil liberities threatened, Obama has done nothing but brought shame to the American people, apologizing to our enemies WHAT! is this man thinking it makes us look weak. Also I want to point something out something if we keep on the road that we are on we will end up like Greece, we are not europe we are the United States!

Memo to John and the other naysayers: for a President who seems to have done nothing for this "great country" in the world according to GOPers, why is there such a long list of legislative accomplishments? Why is the auto industry still in existence and making a profit, why are manufacturing jobs returning to this country, why are we now producing more oil than during the Bush years, why did we not fall over the cliff economically, why are the financial institutions which collapsed the eocnomy still in business, why is Wall Street still alive and not only that doing quite well, why are jobs being created, why has the unemployment rate decreased, why do women now have equal pay for equal work rights, why do gays and lesbians now serve openly in the military and the world has not ended? Oh, the list goes on and on but the trouble for republicans is they just don't like the list.

What, are you rich so raising taxes won't help you? Do you have healthcare so medicaid or medicare aren't an issue? Are you unaffected by this depression so choosing between food and utilities is outside your realm? That could be the only reason that you would vote GOPer. What has the GOPer's House done for you? Reaffirmed 'In God we Trust' on your WS dollars? Does NAFTA and the outsourcing of 3 million jobs help you? Did the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Financial Reform Act of 1936 help you? Did the DC93 and their NDAA Act help you? Does Cheney's friendship with Scalia and ties to the Evangical Fanatics Citizens United help you? Cause it sure helped Cheney and Rove build the richest PAC in the United States, Crossroads GPS. Do you not have a vagina? That sure helps the Blunt Amendment crowd, being the dicks they are. This is your legacy and this is why OCCUPY SPRING is coming to your town, and JoanneSmith1's town, and no jo's town too. Like a gift, you will see how your lack of empathy has prevented your own enlightenment to the greater good of mankind. That is if you dare to come out from behind your anonymous life, your virtually 'gated' community.

It is a sad tale when every one points a finger to cast blame when in reality they themselves contribute to the problem. A large portion of our problems are do to the way we run our lives. Because we want the handout and do to jealousy and laziness, we are willing to take away from those that have worked hard and have succeeded in their pursuits in life. How sad it is that a large amount of Americans want to have the government fix their own lives by taking from the rich so they can take it easy. What happened to hard work and living your dreams. It starts with the individual to fix the problems in society, not electing a government official to bring burdens on people to make a quick fix. When all is said and done, the burden each of us faces with making an income is largely determined by the way we use our money and how hard we work to obtain it. If we can't live without the extras then we must look at ourselves and not run to someone who will give you something just because somehow you feel "entitled". We are the masters of our own fate, no one can take that from you. The man that stands for a good cause, and believes in the people to act for themselves. The man that serves his country, and pushes them to stand on their own. The man that doesn't bring burdens on people because of idleness do to laziness of others. This is the person that should lead America. I don't think there is a perfect candidate nor will there ever be, but there are those that rise up for the occasion that have the skills to help in the time of need. I don't believe it is our current president. He hasn't shown anything in his presidency that would convince me he is trying to make the people better. Romney seems to be heading down the right track and will have my vote.

American-American, I can see by your post that your shoe size is greater than your IQ. Do you really believe raising taxes will solve anything? If you took all of the money from all of the millionaires and billionaires here in the US you might reduce the $15T deficient by $1T. That's less than the deficit in Obama's latest budget proposal. Oh, and please bring that Occupy Spring thing, our current jail inmates need some fresh meat.

John, no one here needs a lesson from you. Noone should follow the blind. That said, everybody just wants a level playing field, thats all. When we have insurance companys, hospitals, big oil companys, companys like GE and many others that price fix and pay no taxes, we are done with middle class america. I want a president that will stand up for me and middle america. One thats not a 250 million dollar worth, 12.5 million dollar house owning, running with the rich baseball and football team owners candidate like Mitt (corporations are people too) Romney. He is out of touch. Obama isnt a perfect man, but he's lightyears better than Mormon pants. Vote for who you want, i dont really care but i will tell you right here and now that Mittens will NOT win. Later. Much later.

The stupidity of the rights on here is deafening. They talk about handouts. Do you know that there are no jobs for people out there? Those of us who are working are lucky to be working. Many people go for interview after interview and don't end up with jobs because for every job offered there are hundreds of people trying to get it. Have you right wingers become so inhuman that you don't care about people going hungry or being homeless? Are you that out of touch with reality? Do you know or even care that over 50% of the homeless that you accuse of looking for a "handout" are men and women who are veterans that we have let slip through the cracks? Do you not realize how much we owe them? Or do you just not give a damn?
