Romney cruises to big win in Maryland

Mitt Romney cruised to a blowout victory in Maryland, giving him one more notch in his belt as he moves closer to the Republican nomination.

NBC News has declared Romney the winner “by a significant margin” in Maryland. All votes are not yet counted. Polls closed at 8 p.m. ET.

The state lined up favorably for Romney, according to the exit polls. Romney has won in states with fewer evangelicals, where people are highly educated and wealthier than average. Those familiar demographic patterns held once again.

Less than one-in-four (37 percent) said they were born again or evangelical Christians, almost six-in-10 (57 percent) had a college degree, and nearly half (48 percent) said they made more than $100,000 a year.

Romney cleaned up with seniors, those who declared themselves “somewhat conservative,” those who said they are “moderate,” and among those who said the economy, beating President Obama, and having the right experience to be president were their top priorities.

Romney also struggled with groups he’s traditionally struggled with. Even though he won those 65 and older in a landslide, he lost those in the 40-49 age group by 15 points to Rick Santorum. He also lost those who wanted a “true conservative” (61-12 percent), someone with “strong moral character” (52-26 percent), and for whom abortion was their top issue (63-16).

The margin was also narrow among those who considered themselves “very conservative” (40-40) and born-again Christians (41-38).

But, fortunately for Romney, the state’s Republicans were less staunchly conservative than in states he lost. More than a third (34 percent) said Santorum was “too conservative.”

Republicans in the state were also pessimistic about the state of the economy with just about a quarter (22 percent) who said the economy is starting to recover, but half (48 percent) said it will get worse.

Romney may very well come out of Maryland with all of the state’s 37 delegates, as some are given to the statewide winner and the rest awarded winner-take-all by congressional district. If Romney wins each district, which is likely, he will win all of the delegates.

The majority of voters (51 percent) came from either the Baltimore or DC suburbs -- 33 percent from Baltimore suburbs, 18 percent from DC suburbs.

Should we be excited!!! Not. Romney is another Bush and we have already been there. Reading Msn comment that people blame the President O'Bama for the economy he has only had four years is insane. After eight years of total irresponsibility of President Bush and the GOP congress and senate we lost our economy. Congress still hasn't repealed the tax credit for allowing our manufacturers to leave the U.S. We need an effective congress and time to throw out the Republican's and get solidarity. GOP has argued against Health Care Bill yet age plays a factor when it comes to giving out a kidney to a person. Great health care is always for the wealthy if you have money.

Excited about Romney? No. Maybe we can get a ham and cheese sandwhich.

so... the only people who vote for Santorum are the ones without college education. No wonder he has to go down to their level to get his message across.

I wonder how Romney will criticize the president on the healthcare bill. What is he going to say?

Obama has had ONLY 4 years? How long does he need to say BRING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW? Romney isn't going to be any better, but Obama has had his chance.

I live in MD and did not vote for this joke of a politician. I did vote for Ron Paul and come November if he is not the republican choice then I will write in Ron Paul and unfortunately that means a yes for Obama. Romney has NO BACKBONE and will be just like Obama. We need a REAL leader and it is not him. At least with Obama we all know that nothing will be completed and the Debt will become higher.

We need an effective congress and time to throw out the Republican's and get solidarity.

Actually we should think about throwing out the extremes on both ends of the spectrum. I cant remember where I read the article, but it was estimated that 15-20 percent of the country identify themselves as 'liberal' and about the same number as 'conservative'. That leaves the other 60 to 70% without any real voice.

There is no room for a pro choice Republican, or a Democrat who thinks people can run their own lives better than the government can. The common sense factor has been taken out of politics. Now were voting on who is the most liberal, or who can be the next Reagan. I dont want either of them.

Considering only 15% of pubbies even bothered to vote in Maryland's contested presidential contest is a truly pathetic and unenthusiastic response to their parties candudates. Not that I really blame them. It must suck to be a repubbie!

Thanks Feisty! You just made my day! I have extended family in Maryland. they voted for Romney in the Primaries because he will be easiest to embarrass in the general election. We will not forget the Congress persons who's stated goal was to make President Obama a one term President not matter what they did to the country or it's citizens. I say, let's give President Obama a House of Representatives and a Senate interested in doing what is best for the country, then let's get some SH_T done! All those who stood in direct oposition to anything the President proposed should be voted OUT!

Rhino: you and Romney...$10,000 bettors. (BTW, I would suggest that you not make that bet...I just sent off some seriously large checks to the government yesterday, over and above what I had paid in taxes throughout the year!)

BUT what you pay in taxes is beside the point. If you don't have health insurance you are a freeloader on the medical system no matter how much you pay in taxes. Unless you self insure and write a check for full freight every time you use the healthcare system, it is other medical care consumers, not the government (through taxes), who pay the bill if you do not!

@wants to know: Who said I didnt have health insurance? Of course I do. What I'm ticked about is how the government is about to ask me to pay for it twice. Plus, just look at the math for this behemoth. 2 Trillion equates to about $5,500.00 for every man woman and child in this country. So for my family that works out to be $33,000.00 bucks. Thats on top of the insurance premiums and the mountain of taxes I already pay. Then when you stop to think that half of Americans don't even pay taxes my share just jumped to $66,000.00 Tell me, even if Obamacare did lower health insurance costs, do you think it would lower them by 66 grand?

          Thats what I'm screaming about.

            #13.5 - Wed Apr 4, 2012 7:04 PM EDT

No one is asking you to pay for health care twice; what the law does is make the people who chould pay but choose not to, pay. Hence, the individual mandate.

And,it is a complete falsehood that 50% of Americans do not pay taxes. We ALL pay taxes. Some of us, like you and me, are fortunate enough to have enough income to pay income tax. Others do not make enough money to pay tax on income (NOT a pleasant way to live!) However, these folks still pay sales tax (which is very regressve), property tax (on their own home, if lucky; most likely in the form of the rent their landlord sets to offset the landlord's property tax), gasoline tax, etc., etc. The working poor pay a much larger percentage of total income in taxes than you or I do. I was happy to send big checks to pay my income tax. It meant I had a big income.

@Wantstoknow: Dude, yes, that is what the mandate does. But that does not cover the cost of this legislation. We the American tax payers still have to pay for that two trillion dollars. Unless you think the 20 million people that in theory would now have to start paying premiums will cover it. That would break down to $100,000.00 per person. Call me crazy but that sounds a little pricy for health insurance.

As to taxes the poor pay. Surely you know that sales tax and property taxes are both state taxes not federal taxes. And only a portion of the gas tax is federal. So no, the poor do not pay federal taxes.

Romney has the Republican nomination won. But to do so he's had come off as a right wing radical and in the process angered just about every demographic except old, white, southern males. (And is spite of this-- not many Republicans are all that fired up over him.) As things stand now, the Democrats don't have to spend much on campaign ads -- they can just rerun Rooney's statements and ask the voters if these are the policies they want. It's going to be interesting to watch Mr. Flip-Flop try to spin himself away from what he's been saying for the last year.

Maryland is an interesting state. You have ALL the Washingtonians who can't afford to live in "the city", upper-scale rich from Northern Virginia (mainly military), and a very large population of poor, poverty-ridden catchment area, scattered throughout the state (Baltimore makes NYC or New Haven look like vacation islands). Wonder who got out to vote? Romney should have said his "first order of business" - provided he beats Obama - should be to sanitize the City of Baltimore.............and sanitizing is what it needs. What a city! An embarrassment, like downtown DC. Mogadishu is safer!

It's interesting that this is what you focused on - Baltimore City. Are you from MD? The suburbs of D.C. are not city wanna bes. Have you ever been to Montgomery or Howard County. It's highly educated and the income is higher than average because of 1) more education 2) higher cost of living than a majority of the country. Baltimore City is one small part of MD and all cities have their issues.

I am from MD and Baltimore and many suburbs in MD especially in PG County are horrible. Those who want to see where the nice areas are need to come to Southern MD where all of those Counties are in the top 15 richest counties in the Country. The only difference is down here in Southern MD we are still very rural so much so we still have Amish living here.

                    holly1009,

I lived in Baltimore, Richmond, Fairfax, and Alexandria and can attest that these towns are, in fact, often educated, However, this is trash talk and I won't engage in it. I'm the son of an Ohio Minister who spent the first 15+ years in Ashland and know more about the wonderful Amish community than man folks. I then served in the military and know a dangerous town/city when I see it, and having spent time in much of Northern VA and MD, as well as DC, find them to be, yes, very educated, but violent as hell, full of "WANNA BE" tools who prey on the very "educated" you speak of.............do you, as Eddie Murphy would say "'a member Marion Barry"? Rural life is the best life, and I currently live it, but so did the Clutters, and look what happened to them (as an "educated person yourself, you're no doubt familiar with Truman Capote's seminal work "IN COLD BLOOD"). Yes?

Believe it or not I used to be a Republican too and I'm not the only one that has changed to independence or democrat. Here is why

If the GOP gets this election everything the State Governors has passed will become Federal Law

Have you not been watching what has been happening around the country since the 2010 elections, Republican governors want to take away collective bargaining, removing pensions, workers rights, cutting money from schools, firemen, policemen, health care, teachers, elderly etc. and giving more to top 1%, trying to put bills through to segregating schools, eliminate Women rights, eliminate minimum wages, eliminate the EPA, eliminate SSI, Medicare, Medicaid, passing laws to make it harder for some people to vote, there has even been talk of getting rid of a few amendments that give people the right to vote for their state Senators and Representatives and many other things.

Just to mention a few governors:

                      Walker of Wisconsin

                      Florida Governor Rick Scott

                      Ohio Governor John Kasich

                      New Jersey Governor Chris Christie

Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan is Giving Himself Power to Take over Cities, Destroy Their Unions and keeping Democrats from being able to vote in the state house and senate he is actually ripping democracy out from the roots.

Over half of the GOP governors have been doing these kinds of things

So if this is the stuff people really want for the entire country what gives the rest of us the right to stop you. All I can say is after they vote all their rights away I hope they enjoy the cannibalistic effect it will have on our countries constitution and democracy

Because of all the cuts that have been made already to the middle class and the poor from many of the Republicans governors we have millions of people in this country living in poverty and Ryan's budget will finish the job, There will be two classes of people here the super rich and the poor. So if you really want to see this asceticism of a change to our civilization and society than go with people like Romney and Ryan.

You forgot to mention the fact that a GOP president will stack the supreme court with right wing Conservatives that gave us idiotic decisions like Citizens United. The Republicans, against the warnings of no less than Berry Goldwater, have gotten into bed with the worst of the religious right who are praying for a theocratic government. The Republican elite will throw us all under the evangelical bus to maintain their power and wealth. I too am a recovering 30 year Republican. Republicans are used to being able to get the folks actually doing the work to vote against their own best interests. Hopefully, that has changed.

Romney cruises to big win in Maryland

I hope he enjoyed it because that is a headline Mittens will not see in November. Maryland is a true-blue state filled with smart people who would never vote Republican.

@Fritz in NH, your ignorance is astounding. Mogadishu is safer than Washington? Baltimore is an embarrassment? You are clueless.

Wow - we are in trouble. I hope all of you enjoy the next four years of disasters to be brought you by your president Barry and his cronies. What an idiot. Can't even put together a health care bill that can stand up to judicial review, and one would have to suspect that he had some of his fellow idiots review it for any potential legal issues. Have fun, fools.
