NBC/Marist Poll: Romney leads in Wisconsin primary

In the upcoming Wisconsin primary, billed as perhaps the final opportunity to change the trajectory of the Republican presidential contest, frontrunner Mitt Romney leads Rick Santorum by seven percentage points, according to a new NBC News/Marist poll. But should he capture the nomination, Romney would start out as the underdog against President Barack Obama, whom Romney trails by double digits.

Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during an event at NuVasive, a maker of devices intended to improve spinal care, in San Diego on March 26, 2012 in California.

In Wisconsin’s April 3 Republican contest, the former Massachusetts governor gets support from 40 percent of likely primary voters, including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a particular candidate. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum gets 33 percent, Texas Rep. Ron Paul gets 11 percent,  and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gets 8 percent. Seven percent of respondents are undecided.

The poll – conducted March 26-27 – is consistent with the findings of a recent Marquette Law School survey, which found Romney leading Santorum by eight points. The Wisconsin race follows a familiar pattern: Romney holds the advantage over Santorum among liberal and moderate Republicans (43 percent to 24 percent), conservatives (42 percent to 33 percent), non-Tea Party supporters (42 percent to 31 percent), and those who earn $75,000 or more annually (47 percent to 32 percent).

Read the NBC News/Marist Poll

Meanwhile, Santorum leads among very conservative primary voters (42 percent to 33 percent), strong Tea Party supporters (40 percent to 32 percent), and evangelical Christians (40 percent to 29 percent).

So far in all the GOP contests where there has been exit polling, Romney has won in every contest where evangelical voters have accounted for less than 50 percent of the electorate. And he has lost in every contest where that number has been higher than 50 percent.

The evangelical percentage among likely Wisconsin GOP primary voters, according to the NBC/Marist poll: 41 percent.

Obama leads in the general election
Looking ahead to the general election, the survey shows Obama holding a sizable advantage over his Republican opposition in this battleground state, which he carried in 2008 but where Republicans made big gains in the 2010 midterms.

Obama leads Romney in Wisconsin among registered voters, 52 percent to 35 percent, with 13 percent undecided. And he edges Santorum, 51 percent to 38 percent, with 11 percent undecided. The poll suggests, however, that both Romney and Santorum would have room to grow in the general election, given that a substantial portion of the undecided vote leans Republican.

Benefiting Obama is growing optimism about the state of the economy (52 percent believe the worst is behind them), as well as a more negative perception of the Republican Party (48 percent say the Democratic Party does a better job in appealing to those who aren’t hard-core supporters, while just 32 percent say that about the GOP).

What’s more, there’s a significant gender gap: Obama leads Romney among women by 25 points (55 percent to 30 percent) and men by 12 points (50 percent to 38 percent). The president’s job-approval rating in Wisconsin stands at 50 percent.

Divided over the recall
As for the recall contest of Republican Gov. Scott Walker, 46 percent of Wisconsin voters say they will support him in that race, while 48 percent indicate they’ll vote for the eventual Democratic candidate who will face off against the incumbent governor.

The approval rating for Walker – who sparked a firestorm of criticism in his effort to curb collective-bargaining rights for the state’s public-sector workers – sits at 48 percent approval, 48 percent disapproval. According to the poll, a majority of likely Republican voters say they’re following the recall more closely than the GOP presidential primary race, 51 percent to 37 percent.

The NBC/Marist poll of Wisconsin was conducted March 26-27 of 2,792 registered voters (with a margin of error of plus-minus 1.9 percentage points) and of 740 likely Republican primary voters (plus-minus 3.6 percentage points).

Here are some examples of Santorum's core values:

Santorum put the screws to elderly veterans. org/2012/01/22/santorum-put-the-screws-to-elderly-veterans/

Santorum: "Libertarians have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down, keep our regulations low, and that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues. That is not how traditional conservatives view the world. There is no such society that I am aware of, where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture."

K2, we've spent the last 4 years hearing you clowns tell us how everything is Bush's fault,

You Republicans have a very short memory. From 1976 to 1992 you whined and cried, moan and groaned and complained and complained more and bitched, carried on and on and blamed President Carter of everything wrong in the entire universe. Then from 1992 to 2008 you whined and cried, moan and groaned and complained and complained more and bitched, carried on and on and blamed President Clinton for everything that was wrong in the entire universe. So – using the standard you set – the left has another 29 years to blame Bush for everything just to pull even with you.

I can't help bring this up. There's lots of grumbling about gas prices right now. The other day, I was watching Romney at some little gala and he said that when Dubya left office, gas was $1.80/gal. Now if memory serves me right, the last time gas was $1.80/gal. was when Dubya's daddy was in office. Can anyone tell me what planet Romney is from?

Gas prices go up during every President. But the GOP wants us to forget that fact. Everything is President Obama's fault.

Except Romney conveniently ignores that during the summer of 2008, gas prices were at a historical average high of over $4. http://gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx

The implication is that the President of the United States can control the price of gasoline. Anyone who believes that should have their head examined. The wing-nuts (e.g. Peter17) will reply with a rant such as "the presidents energy policies effect the price". In that case, explain why the supply of oil is UP, domestic production of oil is UP, yet the price continues to rise. Furthermore, if the president can control the price of gasoline, then why in the name of God did Bush allow it to hit $4.75 a gallon?

trilliondollar I take it your name is taken from the amount spent by Boy George in his lied for war in Iraq. Name the times that Obama has publically stated that the fiasco the working middle class and America finds itself in is the fault of Boy George. In point of fact you can't because it's a lie. President Obama has made a very sincere effort in fact to -avoid- placing the blame on that traitorous, treasonous nazi, from a family of nazis going back before his grandpappy Prescott (Prescott was implicated in a plot to have the military take over the government in a nazi coup in the 1930s and had several factories confiscated 9 months -after- we declared war against Nazi Germany because he was continuing to conduct business with them via his factories). Unfortunately for the neo-cons and teabaggers those in this country who can read and comprehend are well aware of who has screwed over the working middle class in this country. It's not Obama and it's not democrats. It's repubs who controlled the congress for 10 uninterrupted years and controlled the White House and the placing of federal judges for the vast majority of time from 1968 to 2008. Try again. lol

Everyone just ignores the cycle of gas prices. Prices go up every spring/summer and down in the fall/winter. However, they never quite go down as much as they went up.

    It's called inflation, stupid.

I also notice that you avoid the point I've brought up that from 1968 to 2008 the White House was controlled by repubs. The vast majority of policies and federal judges appointed in almost 30 years of repub control of the White House and a solid decade of -both- branches of congress being controlled by repubs were initiated and passed by repubs. You can not speak on it if you wish. Those of us who've lived with repub 'trickle-down' BS economics and seen the working middle class decimated by repubs are well aware of where the fault lays. We need no reminder from -anyone- on who has been predominately responsible for this BS we find ourselves in from. We have the intelligence and reading comprehension to know exactly where and who is responsible. repubs. Not Obama.

wow, the hostility....nice to see passion. I once listened to and then read a deal on NPR about who and what caused the 2008 melt down and it showed that no one party was at fault. Actually, it was both. Go to their site and look around...its there and it comes with a big explanations around each aspect....it covers the mortgage meltdown, the financial meltdown, etc. So, even though you all might be passionate about this subject....it was both parties who created this mess....not just your escape goat of GWB.....It was just his misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I joined the Tea Party Patriots back in 2010 strictly for debt driven fiscal conservative reasons. We will be the next Greece (on steroids) if we continue business as usual. Santorum came from the “business as usual” DC crowd. When I lived in Pittsburgh during the Tricky Ricky years, he was a big spending, union pandering, earmark-happy DC Insider. This is his record and he won’t even carry Pennsylvania in the primaries, guaranteed. If he takes the publicity and name recognition he’s earned on the campaign trail, he might have a chance to try again in 2020 or 2016. But if he drags this out into a brokered convention, or even keeps up this charade until June, then he will be forever branded as a traitor to the GOP having help Obama win 4 more years. If you wake up Nov 7th and the headline reads “OBAMA WINS IN LANDSLIDE” and you wonder how the American electorate could be so stupid. Well if you voted for Rick or Newt, just go look in the mirror.

Mitt Romney is socially conservative enough for me, but more importantly he’s the most fiscally conservative of the 4, with the possible exception of Dr Paul. But he’s the only one with a proven record outside DC as an executive and business leader. Since most of us agree that any of these men would be an improvement on the White House occupant, then consider this: Romney is the only one with any chance to beat Obama. The sooner we get this nomination wrapped up, the better his organization can prepare for the brutal onslaught from Obama’s Media Matters Media Machine. If Wisconsin votes wisely and shows the country we need to unite, you’ll see these headlines “ROMNEY WINS IN LANDSLIDE”. Do make sure you actually go vote, don’t be a spectator & let others choose for you. We have the 3 “R’s” : Romney Rubio, Ryan

        ROMNEY/RUBIO 2012 & 2016 or ROMNEY/RYAN 2012 & 2016

I have to completely disagree with you.

The United States is nothing like Greece. Greece faces two major problems that is fueling their situation.

        1) Greece went over to the Euro and no longer has any control to change their own currencies exchange rate. This means that they can not easily adjust the value of their money to alleviate some of the debt. The United States is the complete opposite here.

        2) Greece has almost no exports and the United States remains the land of plenty. There may be a few resources that we are scarce on, but we have everything we need to survive. Including the Green Belt, which is the richest farming land on the planet. We could cut contact with every other country on the planet and we would be fine. Thus, while we have shipped most of our manufacturing overseas where we continue to excel is in exporting raw materials and food. In short, other nations need us more than we need them. Greece on the other hand depends on the charity of other nations.

I admit, I've been disappointed in Obama, whom I voted for - he talks like he has backbone, but shriveled when we most needed him to stand up. He should've started his presidency by dealing with the economy, and not with healthcare. If Obamacare fails in the Supreme Court, he has only himself to blame. He's made his share of mistakes, but he's also made some risky moves that turned out right -- the auto bailout, Libya, killing Osama and other Al Queada leaders etc. - he's done some good things. The 4 stooges running now - Moe (Romney), Larry (Santorum), Curly (Gingrich) and, of course, Shemp (Paul) all love the de-regulated free enterprise system, which is exactly what shipwrecked this country in '08. Moe is a big stooge in the financial services industry, which is the industry in most need of strict regulation because it's loaded with greedy bastaards, of which Romney is one. If he becomes president, we can kiss the working middle class good-bye. I'm voting for Obama only to keep Moe out of the white house. Romney will only serve greedy corporations and the greedy rich - he doesn't give a damn about the rest of us. I hope Larry, Curly and Shemp keep in the race all the way to the convention and turn it into a 3 ring circus -- selfish repubs deserve no better.

The whole time Bush was president everything was Clinton's fault. 9/11, the war in Iraq, scams on Wall Street, loss of jobs, high gas prices, etc. etc. etc. If a Republican candidate becomes the next president he'll spend the whole four years blaming this president. While Bush was spending money like water and handing out tax breaks to the oil, people who moved jobs overseas and the wealthy, one Conservative stood up and said, "This is nuts. Look what's going to happen to the deficit." No Tea Party then. No screaming how the sky was falling then. The bus hit the ditch and started burning. For the last three years Republicans have helped keep it there and blamed anyone and anything except to have the guts to say, "We screwed up and have learned from our mistakes." I've voted for Republicans in the past, but won't because I've seen them cry crocodile tears over the deficit while they hand out special benefits to themselves and their buddies.

Exactly! I will be the first one to admit that Obama has made his share of mistakes. But he's done some good things, too. All this stalling that has been done by the Republicans has done nothing but instill fear in the American public. It's pathetic. They have disrespected Obama from day one. They have done everything they can to dismantle things we have fought for. They have no sympathy for the working poor and middle class. We can all just roll up and die as far as they're concerned and they still refuse to admit that this sorry state of affairs we are in is because of their GOD, Dubya. They scare me very badly because I am Hispanic and I don't want to have to be looking over my shoulder in fear like during the Bush years again. And before anyone says anything, I was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens.

In addition, I see the natural beauty of this state disappear every day due to the Republican hell bent need to constantly drill for oil that is NOT going to bring down the price of gas. I see Hispanics afraid to leave their homes because of racial profiling, and I see working poor that constantly have to decide which bill to pay each month because they aren't making enough money. Some of them can't get public assistance because they make $1 too much. I see Black people afraid to come out of their houses because of racial profiling. Education here sucks and they are currently tearing down a junior high school with no plans to rebuild. So, please, don't go blaming Obama for any of that.

The main reason blame is usually associated with the prior president is that it takes 2-3 year for any policy change to have any real effect in our government. I.E. when Obama took office we were hemoraging jobs. Was it his fault. Not really. A certain amount of optimism did help to slow it a bit. But change takes time. We are now enjoying several months of slow but steady job growth and people are starting to think that the worst is behind us. Perception is everything and the Republicans should be weary of this because if things continue to improve until November and they continue to campaign the economy they will lose.

What’s more, there’s a significant gender gap: Obama leads Romney among women by 25 points (55 percent to 30 percent) and men by 12 points (50 percent to 38 percent). The president’s job-approval rating in Wisconsin stands at 50 percent.

Well that's what happens when you wage a war on women. They are vindictive creatures and vote against you.

I always find it amusing when misogynistic teabaggers and neo-con radical fundy repubs start screwing around with the folks that predominately cook your food and wash your clothes. How about triple starch in Mitts' magic underwear? lol

Simply put the ratio of women to men is 51% to 49%. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you alienate the women you lose.

It would be great for this nomination to go to the convention floor, last time was it not Ike that won on that. I will not vote for Romney, not that he is to liberal, to consertative, he is dumb, there is probably a woman behind him that helped make his millions, that he did not inherit. let him go back to ma and never bother the am public again.

Romeny is going to be the candidate. Hopefully he will preform better, but I seriously doubt it. He needs to have someone to tell him what to say. He is a good puppet, hopefully the VP will be a good leader. I think Obama is going to win by a landslide.

                                        Pushing toward socialism.

Romney is getting all the big name endorsements now.

What will really take him to the top is the endorsement of the most powerful and influential Republican leader of the 21st century!!!

Wait until George W. Bush comes out of hiding and makes his endorsement of Romney!!!

Bush will remind us all what greatness awaits our country once the GOP is in power again!!!

Romney is getting half hearted endorsements and endorsements from people that turn most independent voters off. I.E. the anti-endorsements. Such as the snake in the grass Paul Ryan and crazies like Donald Trump. These people aren't just jokes they are their own punch lines.

Like Obama has any real supporters on the dem side? Ok, the Hollywood elite....or the misguided. But all in all, endorsers are only really applicable during primary's and even then it is a beauty contest at best if you get endorsements. The real test is the votes....popular and delegate. In this case, Romney is putting away more than the other three are. But overall polls will level out and show a race much closer than polls now reflect....GOP are still in a primary race....once a candidate is nominated....then we will see what the voter polls say....

Mitt is in contact every day with Boy George. Mitt speaks to him personally at least twice a day to remind Boy George to keep his mouth shut and to -not- endorse him. Mitt has to do it twice a day 'cause you never can tell what Boy George will remember from one hour to the next. All Mitt needs is an endorsement from non-elected treasonous Boy George to put the seal of disaster on his lame arse. lol

There has been so much underhanded GOP doubledealing to keep Ron Paul from getting delegates that it is remeniscent of the old "Taminy Hall" days. Missouri, Washington state and Georgia all have glaring examples of this. If Ron Paul runs as an independent, he would win - hands down.

Mitt Romney is one of the most prepared and experienced presidential candidates we have had in years - a former Governor, a successful businessman, a charitable giver, a family man, a man of faith - a hard working man of excellence. His policy objectives are straight on conservative and his tone is moderate. A leader and an executive to the core, if there is anyone prepared to oversee a recovery of the U.S. economy, it is Mitt Romney. Those who think Romney is "out of touch" do not understand why he gives so much nor do they understand the nature of service within his Church nor the requirements of a Governor of a whole state. Like his policy or not, any Governor who comes up with a comprehensive health plan to serve the uninsured of his state cannot be argued to be "out of touch" with their needs. Mitt Romney spends much time and resource understanding the problems of our day...and he has much experience in dealing with them and for helping others resolve them.

                                                      Truth? ---- Romney's daddy was a governor ---- 43's daddy was a President

Mittens has no experience except in everything bad that contributed to our financial situation... He has experience in the "Mandate" he once pushed for the national mandate on health care.

Concerning his health care policy; It was the blueprint for Obamacare which he now claims he will repeal should he win the White House. He is out of touch with the rest of us because he was born into money and doesn't know what it's like to live from paycheck to paycheck. He doesn't have to choose which bill gets paid every month and he doesn't have to worry about where he is going to get affordable health care or insurance. Just because he instituted that plan in Mass. doesn't make him the best candidate for President, and he isn't. Also, his Church activities don't mean a hill of beans to me because all they are concerned with on that respect is repealing Roe v Wade and that in itself would be a disaster to women's rights all over this country. Romney is a joke, a robot programmed by the Republicans. The only problem is that, like the Tin Man, they forgot to give him a heart.

You might add to that thought that in Mass. to pass a healthcare plan like Mass....it took an 80% Democratic majority in that state to pass it.....not hearing anyone here saying that those 80% Dems were wrong, that they were stupid, that they are to blame for passing such a mandate for that state....frankly, I am tired of paying the way of someone else. Get a friggin job and pay for your own sheit. The poor have just as much of an opportunity to get educated and a job that pays a livable wage. There is nothing wrong with making those who use the system pay into the system or be responsible to pay their own bills.

Excuse me! If someone is poor, it doesn't make them uneducated, nor does it mean they are not working. That is the mindset of all Republicans, we are uneducated and lazy. Let me tell you something, dm, I worked hard for everything I have and so has my husband. We have paid off our house and one new car and are paying off another new car. Yet even with the good fortune we have had, we still are scraping to get by. I cannot give up the second car because I need it to go to work. My husband's employer just had to drop his insurance company because the premiums for his employees were way too high. He is currently shopping for another company. My job doesn't offer insurance and I cannot afford a policy. So, you tell me, what is Romney's solution to my problem? I'll answer that for you. His solution is to say, "Go DIE!" If Obamacare is so bad, how come the same care is still in force in Mass.? You're right, there is nothing wrong for those that use the system pay into the system or be responsible for their own bills. The problem is, under Republican oppression, WE CAN'T AFFORD TO!

Mitt Romney is one of the most prepared and experienced presidential candidates we have had in years - a former Governor, a successful businessman,

It's a whole lot easier to be a successful businessman" when you start out with a multi million dollar cushion you got from daddy. Remember -- since 1928 we've has 2 businessmen presidents -- Herbert Hoover and George w. Bush. What kind of shape was the nation in when those two left office?

It absolutely blows my mind that a GOP supporter can tell all liberals to "get a friggin job and pay for your own sheit" (thanks dm. I'm assuming you meant @!$%# and not sheit), yet they hate "Obamacare." Huh???? Isn't that EXACTLY what you want??? This forces all those "lazy and uneducated" liberals to get health insurance so you and your hard earned tax dollars don't have to pay for it. So, now it's done. What's the friggin problem???

The Republicans have done everything they can to follow the McConnell One Term President Law and they have done it to the point of making themselves the most disrespected political party in the country with their scare tactics and radical ways. Everything Obama has tried to do to boost the economy in this country was circumvented by the Republicans. Tell me, what is their plan to change the health care issue in this country? How do they plan to get affordable health insurance to the rest of us? Their only agenda is to create their idea of perfection where the Rich reap all the rewards and the rest of us continue to scramble for the crumbs.
