NBC/Marist Poll: Romney leads in Wisconsin primary

In the upcoming Wisconsin primary, billed as perhaps the final opportunity to change the trajectory of the Republican presidential contest, frontrunner Mitt Romney leads Rick Santorum by seven percentage points, according to a new NBC News/Marist poll. But should he capture the nomination, Romney would start out as the underdog against President Barack Obama, whom Romney trails by double digits.

Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during an event at NuVasive, a maker of devices intended to improve spinal care, in San Diego on March 26, 2012 in California.

In Wisconsin’s April 3 Republican contest, the former Massachusetts governor gets support from 40 percent of likely primary voters, including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a particular candidate. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum gets 33 percent, Texas Rep. Ron Paul gets 11 percent,  and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gets 8 percent. Seven percent of respondents are undecided.

The poll – conducted March 26-27 – is consistent with the findings of a recent Marquette Law School survey, which found Romney leading Santorum by eight points. The Wisconsin race follows a familiar pattern: Romney holds the advantage over Santorum among liberal and moderate Republicans (43 percent to 24 percent), conservatives (42 percent to 33 percent), non-Tea Party supporters (42 percent to 31 percent), and those who earn $75,000 or more annually (47 percent to 32 percent).

Read the NBC News/Marist Poll

Meanwhile, Santorum leads among very conservative primary voters (42 percent to 33 percent), strong Tea Party supporters (40 percent to 32 percent), and evangelical Christians (40 percent to 29 percent).

So far in all the GOP contests where there has been exit polling, Romney has won in every contest where evangelical voters have accounted for less than 50 percent of the electorate. And he has lost in every contest where that number has been higher than 50 percent.

The evangelical percentage among likely Wisconsin GOP primary voters, according to the NBC/Marist poll: 41 percent.

Obama leads in the general election
Looking ahead to the general election, the survey shows Obama holding a sizable advantage over his Republican opposition in this battleground state, which he carried in 2008 but where Republicans made big gains in the 2010 midterms.

Obama leads Romney in Wisconsin among registered voters, 52 percent to 35 percent, with 13 percent undecided. And he edges Santorum, 51 percent to 38 percent, with 11 percent undecided. The poll suggests, however, that both Romney and Santorum would have room to grow in the general election, given that a substantial portion of the undecided vote leans Republican.

Benefiting Obama is growing optimism about the state of the economy (52 percent believe the worst is behind them), as well as a more negative perception of the Republican Party (48 percent say the Democratic Party does a better job in appealing to those who aren’t hard-core supporters, while just 32 percent say that about the GOP).

What’s more, there’s a significant gender gap: Obama leads Romney among women by 25 points (55 percent to 30 percent) and men by 12 points (50 percent to 38 percent). The president’s job-approval rating in Wisconsin stands at 50 percent.

Divided over the recall
As for the recall contest of Republican Gov. Scott Walker, 46 percent of Wisconsin voters say they will support him in that race, while 48 percent indicate they’ll vote for the eventual Democratic candidate who will face off against the incumbent governor.

The approval rating for Walker – who sparked a firestorm of criticism in his effort to curb collective-bargaining rights for the state’s public-sector workers – sits at 48 percent approval, 48 percent disapproval. According to the poll, a majority of likely Republican voters say they’re following the recall more closely than the GOP presidential primary race, 51 percent to 37 percent.

The NBC/Marist poll of Wisconsin was conducted March 26-27 of 2,792 registered voters (with a margin of error of plus-minus 1.9 percentage points) and of 740 likely Republican primary voters (plus-minus 3.6 percentage points).

I hope all of you realize that Romney and Walker are similar in the sense they both realize that Unions are in themselves, governments that profit off of their "citizens" well-being, and I don't need to explain why they are at odds. The difference between Romney and Walker is that Walker directly dismantles the unions power, Romney does it in a legal indirect way. And he is very good at what he does. However, if we want Obama to win, we have to make sure that Ron Paul doesn't get the nomination. I think his chances are diminishing, however, I went to the Ron Paul rally in Madison, and I had friends that went to Romney up north, and Santorum and Gingrich rallies in Milwaukee. Ron Paul had many thousands of people there, probably 10% seniors, looked like war vets, and probably only about 60% students, but probably 5000 people there. IT was crazy to see. Then Gingrich and Santorum, not very many, my friends left, and Romney sounds like he had a crowd, but nothing compared to what Ron Paul had. I think because these are non-binding straw polls, Ron Paul might have a chance, and we need to get out there and vote for Romney or Santorum, to make sure it isn't Dr Ron Paul vs Obama.

Most of his money came from people like me at anywhere from $50 to $200 a donation. Give me a little time and I'll provide proof of my statement.

Romney earned his money? really. Look this one up. When asked about his speaker fees he received, Romney stated that being paid 325,000 dollars for standing in front of another group of elitist 1%ers, who're busy drinking highpriced single malt scotch and groping the girls bringing their drinks to the table, and instructing them on how to screw thousands of workers in the middle class out of jobs by buying, dismantling and reselling factories for fun and profit, how that amount of money for that amount of time 'working', wasn't very much money. The median wage in this country by the statistics is a bit better than 50k a year for working middle class. Good ole' 1%er Mitt's only getting 6 and a half years worth of wages for the average blue collar middle class worker and then claims, 'It's not much money.' repub corporate fascists have controlled the White House for the last 40 years predominately. 2 democrats in the WH from 1968 to 2008 for a total of 12 years. The repubs have during that time packed the federal judgeships, a lifetime position, with repub corporate fascists. It's -1- of the reasons why we're in the fiasco we find ourselves in; as the working middle class has no protection via the judiciary against corporate interests. Every penny that Romney spends out of his 'personnel' wealth will be replaced by repub corporate fascists like the Koch sucker Brothers. Every penny. I've been watching this fiasco for 50 years. You gotta laugh at repubs BS diverting and distraction techniques. Saul Alinsky would undoubtedly be amused at neo-con teabagging radical repubs trying to use his tactics. lol

Yes, President Obama leads the GOP field in Wisconsin today, but what does that mean for November. Not a thing. What matters in November is who wins the election. As a voter, you must ask yourself one question as you vote in November. Are you better off now, compared to 4 years ago. If you can't say you are better off then you should remove the cause of the slump.

              • Romney has been nothing but successful (dual degress) LAW and BISINESS. He donated his inheritance and started his company with borrowed money.
              • Went back to previous employer as CEO b/c they were failing, 2 years and they were solven , back in business
              • The Olympic were about to be cancelled b/c of greed and corruption, Romney came as CEO, successful Olympic with millions surplus
              • He led as governor in a most liberal state which were billions in debt, after 4 years they have millions surplus.
              • Romney was in the private sector he has created jobs, balanced budgets, fixed collapsed companies with successful results.

Why wouldn't we want someone with an amazing economic experience to FIX our country? think about this and hopefully you will make the decision to pick the most qualified candidate who has been successful in all endeavor, not someone who were voted out by their own state, or quit b/c of ethic charges, or all of the same. all living DC insider influence. President Obama Raises More Than $70 Million In Third Quarter

                by Tommy Christopher | 10:21 am, October 13th, 2011

Here is the full text of the Obama campaign’s email to supporters:

                Friend –

Remember that deadline we kept emailing you about a couple weeks ago?

Here’s what you should know about what we’ll report to the FEC tomorrow:

                – In the third fundraising quarter of this year, 606,027 people donated to this campaign — even more than gave in the record-breaking previous quarter.
                – Those people gave more than 766,000 total donations — 98 percent of them $250 or less, at an average amount of $56. That’s more than twice as many donations than we had at this point in the historic 2008 campaign.
                – We are focused on building infrastructure that will help us win in 2012. And each quarter we set a combined goal for the campaign and our allies at the Democratic National Committee. We far exceeded our goal of $55 million this quarter between the two organizations. Great work.
                – Together, Obama for America and the DNC raised more than $70 million. And it all happened during a summer when the President was focused on doing the job he was elected to do — a summer when we had to cancel a series of fundraising events and ask everyone to dig a little deeper.

If I could sum up this last quarter in a few words: You came through. Thank you.

Here’s even bigger news: Right now, 982,967 people have donated to this campaign. We’re within striking distance of 1 million donors.

You’re one of those first million already, so it’s up to you to inspire someone else to give for the first time. Make a promise to match someone’s first donation to the campaign now — you pick the amount, and we’ll match you with a grassroots supporter who hasn’t given to the campaign yet. You can even leave them a note (and you might get one back).

Will you donate $35 or more and promise to match someone’s first donation to the campaign today?

Part of the reason we send you all these emails is that we don’t accept any money from special-interest groups or Washington lobbyists.

So getting to a million grassroots donors isn’t just a huge accomplishment this early in the campaign. It’s our answer to our opponents, the press, and anyone who wants to know whether the President’s supporters have his back.

The reality is that on top of the hundreds of thousands of supporters from 2008 who decided to make another donation, 257,635 people made their first donation ever to the Obama organization — continuing the record pace you all set in the previous quarter.

That support translates directly to what we can do on the ground. In the past three monthswe’ve grown our organizing staff by 50 percent, and opened up three new field offices every week. Thousands of volunteers and organizers made 3 million phone calls and in-person visits to voters.

That’s all because you decided to be part of this.

And the continued pace of that growth is up to you — we will open more offices, train more organizers, and knock on more doors at the pace you make possible.

When Republicans think it helps their political fortunes to block the progress that the President is advocating for, we have to speak up and mobilize.

You know why it’s important to engage right now. We’re up against a Republican Party and special interest-funded groups that will spend hundreds of millions of dollars spreading any message that they believe will defeat the President and roll back our efforts to build a fairereconomy that rewards hard work and responsibility, not large corporations.

But we’ve also got to build for the long term. That’s what all the fundraising and deadlines are about: building the organization now that will put us in a position to win in 2012.

Thanks for all you did to get us here. I’m excited for what’s ahead, and I hope you’ll take part in the push to 1 million grassroots donors today.

Make a pledge and double your impact by inspiring someone to donate for the first time today:

                https://donate.barackobama.com/Million-Pledge

of all the gop candidates, I like him the most..I think he's a reasonable moderate who can do the best job of being president of all americans. his flip flopping, while annoying, is unfortunately almost a requirement these days..pretend to be an extremist to get the nomination, then sprint to the middle to try and win the general election.

If mitt tried to run as a moderate GOP who could win the general election, someone else woudl be the GOP nominee, sadly. its a real problem for the GOP, since it makes it harder for the best candidate to be nominated. The GOP has allowed itself to focus on social issues, which is crazy for a job whose main mission is foreign affairs and secondarily economic issues.

The GOP has no one this election cycle. Perhaps in four years some rising star might come forward: Cristie, Rubio, Jindal. These guys are up this year because the GOP realizes that their constant "Just say no" has lost them the election beofre it started.

If RON PAUL won't be the next president, then let odumbo stay on another four years and finish sinking this ignorant country. I would vote for Putin before this moron, mormon cult member romney. romney is a liar, a puppet, and a fool. This country deserves exactly what it gets if it can't vote for Ron Paul. But with all the cheating going on by the republicans, I would not be surprised if Ron Paul really was winning and ahead of the illuminati candidate romney.

Rick Santorum voted against the National Right to Work act of 1995, which would have repealed provisions of Federal Law rhat require employees to pay union dues or fees as a condition of umemployment. He voted for Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 which imposes job killing federal regulation on business. Why do Wisconsin with high rates of unemployment vote for Rick Santorum?

Mitt Romney has an amazing experience in private sector and dual degrees Law and Business, he knows how to balance the budget, create jobs, for ALL AMERICANS. He was elected in a 85% democrats state they were billions in debt , 4 years they have millions surplus, with 19 cut. Romney is a successful businessman who knows how to lead the country with prosperity . I vote according to what a candidate can do for me, based on his achievements and diligence, not b/c of a party better then the other, or I'm fanatic who wants to chose a candidate just b/c I like this candidate for some reason, I go to church and listen to my Pastor, I read my Bible and follow The Word of God rules, I'm not voting for a candidate to teach me moral values, I need to EAT,and job to make money to survive. Just our values??? it will never work like that, our country will never get out of the disastrous mess. The candidate who will change the country with jobs, I can pay my bills, eat, put gas in my car, save money for rainy days, no more sleepless nights over financial burden. That's is important as well. I chose to support Mitt Romney and after I heard all the candidates proposals and finally Romney has my vote because he's the most qualified for the White House. I'm a hard working woman , for the past 3 years I'm always struggling to survive to make the end meet , my husband and I use ONE car , we can't afford 2 for the prices of gas, groceries, etc. I can't wait to see changes next year with Mitt Romney. President Obama, Santorum , both Senators they have no leadership experience, at least the president have tried his best, but he FAILED and Santorum nothing at all. Gingrich is an historian, speaker, cannot lead . Mitt Romney has proven he can create job, and FIX the country. Romney 2012.

The country was run by repubs for the vast amonunt of time over the past 40 years. 2 democrats in the WH for a total of 12 years, all the others repubs from 1968 to 2008. From 1996 to 2006 -both- branches of congress were controlled by repubs. The economy melted under the repubs 'trickle-down' economics, corporate deregulation and lack of funding for personnel and oversight for what regulations remained. From 1970 to the census of 2010 the middle class lost 26% with 19% of that spiraling into poverty under, vastly and by a huge time margin, repubs. You can point fingers where-the-frig-ever but anyone with a modicum of reading comprehension and the capability of pouring p out of a boot knows -exactly- who's landed us in this crapfest. 'Course the 1%ers will make money out of this too. Many more 'remedies' from the repubs and there won't be a middle class. I wonder what the 1%ers will do when there is no 'buffer', ie. the middle class, between their elitist arses and those in poverty? lol

Are you kidding? The economic issues of this country should not take a back seat to any other issue. The President's first priority where that is concerned is to the people of this country. Obama has, time and time again, proposed ways to create jobs in this country. He's instituted tax breaks to small businesses that do hire the unemployed and all the Republicans have done is shoot it down by saying the government does not provide employment. I think the Republicans better retract that statement because if government doesn't create jobs, they wouldn't be working because we HIRED them! So, since we are their employers, I say, FIRE THEM ALL (the current Republicans).

                      Crazy isn't it Pat?

Romney wants American Families to die & on the same hand he wants to send more American Families to War as republicans slash 11 Billion Dollars from the VA & continue to build their military empire throughout the Middle East & Europe

This President ended their Cold War policies & these nuts want to bring it back on steroids

Pat, it's not just the health issue, but other issues, too. These Radical Republicans have been trying their hardest to set us back. Look at women's rights. Roe v Wade was a keystone decision for women in this country. It gave us the right to decide what WE want where our bodies are concerned. These radicals scream how they are Pro-Life and don't even know the real meaning of the term. I lost two good friends before Roe v Wade, both to coat hanger abortions because their good, Christian parents kicked them out when they needed them the most. Then there is marriage equality. What right to they have to tell people who they can love and spend the rest of their life with? Jeez, sometimes I wish I could pray their stupidity away. What right do some of these governors have to make it harder for the elderly, people of other races, and the young people of voting age, to vote. There are over 80,000 people in Florida that will not be voting in this election. This madness has to stop because if we get Romney this November, the working poor and middle class doesn't have a chance. It makes me even more afraid than I am now.
