NBC/Marist Poll: Romney leads in Wisconsin primary

In the upcoming Wisconsin primary, billed as perhaps the final opportunity to change the trajectory of the Republican presidential contest, frontrunner Mitt Romney leads Rick Santorum by seven percentage points, according to a new NBC News/Marist poll. But should he capture the nomination, Romney would start out as the underdog against President Barack Obama, whom Romney trails by double digits.

Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during an event at NuVasive, a maker of devices intended to improve spinal care, in San Diego on March 26, 2012 in California.

In Wisconsin’s April 3 Republican contest, the former Massachusetts governor gets support from 40 percent of likely primary voters, including those who are undecided yet leaning toward a particular candidate. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum gets 33 percent, Texas Rep. Ron Paul gets 11 percent,  and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gets 8 percent. Seven percent of respondents are undecided.

The poll – conducted March 26-27 – is consistent with the findings of a recent Marquette Law School survey, which found Romney leading Santorum by eight points. The Wisconsin race follows a familiar pattern: Romney holds the advantage over Santorum among liberal and moderate Republicans (43 percent to 24 percent), conservatives (42 percent to 33 percent), non-Tea Party supporters (42 percent to 31 percent), and those who earn $75,000 or more annually (47 percent to 32 percent).

Read the NBC News/Marist Poll

Meanwhile, Santorum leads among very conservative primary voters (42 percent to 33 percent), strong Tea Party supporters (40 percent to 32 percent), and evangelical Christians (40 percent to 29 percent).

So far in all the GOP contests where there has been exit polling, Romney has won in every contest where evangelical voters have accounted for less than 50 percent of the electorate. And he has lost in every contest where that number has been higher than 50 percent.

The evangelical percentage among likely Wisconsin GOP primary voters, according to the NBC/Marist poll: 41 percent.

Obama leads in the general election
Looking ahead to the general election, the survey shows Obama holding a sizable advantage over his Republican opposition in this battleground state, which he carried in 2008 but where Republicans made big gains in the 2010 midterms.

Obama leads Romney in Wisconsin among registered voters, 52 percent to 35 percent, with 13 percent undecided. And he edges Santorum, 51 percent to 38 percent, with 11 percent undecided. The poll suggests, however, that both Romney and Santorum would have room to grow in the general election, given that a substantial portion of the undecided vote leans Republican.

Benefiting Obama is growing optimism about the state of the economy (52 percent believe the worst is behind them), as well as a more negative perception of the Republican Party (48 percent say the Democratic Party does a better job in appealing to those who aren’t hard-core supporters, while just 32 percent say that about the GOP).

What’s more, there’s a significant gender gap: Obama leads Romney among women by 25 points (55 percent to 30 percent) and men by 12 points (50 percent to 38 percent). The president’s job-approval rating in Wisconsin stands at 50 percent.

Divided over the recall
As for the recall contest of Republican Gov. Scott Walker, 46 percent of Wisconsin voters say they will support him in that race, while 48 percent indicate they’ll vote for the eventual Democratic candidate who will face off against the incumbent governor.

The approval rating for Walker – who sparked a firestorm of criticism in his effort to curb collective-bargaining rights for the state’s public-sector workers – sits at 48 percent approval, 48 percent disapproval. According to the poll, a majority of likely Republican voters say they’re following the recall more closely than the GOP presidential primary race, 51 percent to 37 percent.

The NBC/Marist poll of Wisconsin was conducted March 26-27 of 2,792 registered voters (with a margin of error of plus-minus 1.9 percentage points) and of 740 likely Republican primary voters (plus-minus 3.6 percentage points).

Obama leads Romney in Wisconsin among registered voters

Look at the end of the article. About 2800 total polled and only 750 voting in GOP primary. Obama should have won the poll 75% to 25%!! This shows how weak Obama is! Always look for the number of each group polled before putting any faith in the poll. Why do you think the liberals never publish their info about who was polled? When you consistently poll more liberals than conservatives, you're going to get this kind of junk.

Bob, the electorate doesn't all vote in the primary. And in general, more people are registered independents than registered for either party (not combined, and it may not be true for Wisconsin, but I'm sure its close). Also, despite what may seem impossible to extremists like yourself, but some democrats do occasionally vote republican and vice versa.

Wisconsin ranked dead last in 'job creation' last year under Scott Walker. Plus, Walker increased Wisconsin's budget with breaks to the so-called job creators - but still NO JOBS! Wisconsin lost more jobs than any other state last year under Scott Walker!

Walker promised no increase in taxes yet Wisconsin is seeing their taxes go up as the education system tries to make up for the drastic cuts Walker made to education. Now Wisconsin will have to pay for an expanded school voucher program and the tech schools are having referendums for taxpayers to fund their existence.

Plus, Walker's budget is in the red so he is taking the federal funds provided for WI homeowners in trouble with their mortgages and using it to balance his budget! So sad for the people says Walker. Cut and spend GOP tactics will bring down the GOP here.

The job approval for Gov. Walker in the State of Wisconsin is 1 point over President Obama, 48% vs. $47 % even those are different elections. Gov. Walker is coming from behind with approval of 30 % , when he was recall, he has the momentum and he will keep his Guvernatorial Chair.

About Romney he will be the nominee, Santorium only can win in the deep South with the support of the Evangelicals, and in the Presidential race because he is more moderate than Santorium , Romney has more chance to win the WH, no single Republican is going to vote for Obama, Romney will get independent votes, white collar, blue collar, woman and any people that is smart enaugh to see what this president and Democrats are doing to our country.

Exactly so wait until the general elction does start. If Obama is leads Romney now wait until Romney (since the other clowns like Santorum and Gingrich don't have a chance) is the GOP candidate.

It's sad that the flip-flop Romney who in not even like by his own party is the best that the Republicans can come up with.

Give it a rest- I hate to burst your bubble, but the GOP will never allow there to be a contested or brokered convention. Besides, there is a rule that states that to be considered for the nomination in a contested convention, you need to have the most delegates in at least 5 states. I think this would disqualify Ron Paul.

Look at the other polls marist released showing Santorum faring better than Romney in Wisconsin. That doesn't make sense. Wisconsin is a open primary state and what was used for the poll was 31% Registered Democrats. 26% republican 43% independent. Only 2% of the democrats are likely to vote. The poll really tells us nothing, we need to know who is winning based on likely voters, not registered voters. Registered voters only tells the possibility, Likely voters tells you the probability.

Plastic Romney can't win. Mark my words, Santorum is going to join Fox sooner or later but unlike Palin nobody will watch him. Gingrich will sulk and sulk inside about how he could've been the next best president after Ronald Reagon - well somebody said - not failure but low aim is crime. At least Obama wanted to match Lincoln.

Anyway ... the point is GOP is toast. Fear mongering only worked after 911. Now people are back to normal and they will respond to a positive message better than GOP's cry babies' fear mongering.

Kine - people needed to know that the leadership of the party wants Romney in a bad way. Voting for someone else may send a message that the people run the party, not the manipulation of the leaders.

BTW: The democratic party in Cleveland is no better, every position is hand picked by the leadership. Primaries are mainly a formality. The republican party in Summit County is the same way, you want to run for something the top dog doesn't want you to do, you get pushed out.

Santorum is not favored by the leadership, and someone outside of leadership right now is the way to go. Could we do that with the Democratic party too. Then and only then, will we get better leadership in both parties.

How does it? In one post you say the general election campaign hasn't started yet but in the next post you agree that Obama has been capmpaigning for 2 years not.

Obama like every other president has a goal of being relelected. But to say he has been campaigning for 2 years is not exactly true.

Trump stated 95% of Obama's use the Airforce One if for campaigning reasons. Yet he provided ZERO proof.

Karl Rove has been flooding this country with "infomercials" full of lies, edited videos, edited speeches.

"I-created-100,000-jobs" Romney constantly lies in every single speech he makes whether about Obama or even about Santorum and Gingrich (who lie too just not as much as Romney). The only thing Romney has not lied about is that Willard is his first name.

But yet, you people eat it up like it's the truth.

There goes the MSNBC news slant again. Is there any doubt that MSNBC tries to skew the thoughts of it's readers. In every other story I have read about the Wisconsin primary, none have added this Obama poll slant to the story. Other polls have Romney LEADING Obama by double digits. This poll was in Wisconsin only.

Looking at the posts above it seems that it works too! People are so gullible and the media just plays you like harp.

Because these two things are not mutually exclusive. In case you haven't been paying attention, the Republicans have been embroiled in a primary race . Obama officially kicked off his campaign in April of 2011, and has basically been running unopposed ever since. I would argue that, because this man does absolutely nothing but for the sake of political expediency, he has been campaigning since he set foot in the oval office. Why? Because campaigning is all he knows how to do.

My friends in Wisconsin ~ of every political stripe ~ cannot wait to be rid of that thug Walker. For those of you who think he's just dandy, think for yourselves, forget party politics. Walker is a cheat and a fraud, always has been which anyone who does their homework will quickly discover. He has put Wisconsin up for sale and not to the Koch bros only.

Given what Walker has done, what makes Santorum think he's viable in WI? He has more polish than Walker, yes, but he would do to the country what Walker did to WI. People of sound reasoning can see how drawn he is by the lunatic fringe. The man is simply not stable. As far as WI is concerned, stick a fork in him.

You're wrong that no Republicans support Obama. I personally know registered Republicans who volunteer for Obama! Romney will NOT get blue collar or female votes. He's a weak candidate and that will become increasingly obvious as he tries to lie and flip-flop his way into the White House.

DB Akron...are you saying you support Santorum? If so, you are wasting your energy. Santorum will not win the GOP nomination.

The only sensible thing to do is support Obama...and I mean really support him. If the public got behind him, he could do great things for this country. It's pathetic how brainwashed some Americans are to oppose a leader who only wants to do them good. It makes me feel very pessimistic about the future of this country sometimes.

Bitterhawk: the Republican Party rule requiring that you "win" 5 states only applies to nominations on the first ballot, when all delegates which are bound to their nominee. In a brokered convention, when no nominee has enough delegates to win on the first ballot, conceptually anyone could get enough delegates from 5 states or more to vote for them. Even Ted Nugent or Sarah Palin could end up as the nominee.

As pathetic as the GOP has become, such a situation would not come as a big surprise. They might as well go ahead and nominate a sure loser since they've already lost the votes of sane people anyway.

I hope one day they'll awake from their suicidal madness and help us get this country back on track. It's hard going with so many GOP lunatics in straitjackets obstructing any sort of progress.

dirp- Thank you for the clarification. There is a difference between a "contested" convention, which is what I believe all of the candidates except Romney would be hoping for, and a"brokered" convention which is what you are describing. You are absolutely correct that a contested convention can become a brokered convention after the first ballot, but this hasn't happened since 1952. All of this is moot though, since we both know it will never reach that point.

Sad thing is this country has and is going through some real change and times are pretty challenging for the fuure as well. Someone pointed out that the republicans has been using fear, after 911, to put policies and laws into effect.....but the democrats are doing exactly the same thing! There really isnt a difference anymore between the two parties anymore.

The news is another story,.....we cant even get fair and unbiased media coverage of the candidates any longer. The election process is covered as if it were "Lets make a deal" or some sort of reality show....Its a damned shame!!!

Obama will probably win if Romney is nominated. Santorum is a freaking nutcase, who should be in a zoo, rather than running for presidency. Santorum and Ahmedinjad should be locked up together where they can fight their own holy war....which Santorum would have started!!!

The only honest one, who is really trying to make a difference (that we need) is Ron Paul, and he is the only one that the media will blatantly ignore,....because he does not favor the corruption that lies behind most of everyone in politics....While Romney is trailing to Obama is double digits......Ron Paul is (depending on the poll) either tie, or beating or winning by single digits (Wouldnt that mean, if the GOP's real agenda was to defeat Obama, they would stand behing tha man that can beat Obama???) The GOP doesnt really care.....its all show!!!! Why is there no halftime show???

Kaybee - I'm a part of the anybody but Romney crowd. Conservatives are swinging behind Santorum. if it weren't for Gringrich jumping off the self-agrandizment bridge and the establishment conservatives bowing to the leadership of the party, Santorum would be almost even with Romney right now. As it is right now, Romney cannot win. He only has 900 probable delegates. Santorum has 543 probable delegates without 4 states (no polls) that are expected to favor him. Romeny needs 46% of the remaining delegates to get 1144 on a popularity stuck below 40%.

The only way Romney can win is by Santorum AND Gingrich suspending their Campaigns. It is clear that Gingrich will do everything but suspend his campaign until the Texas primary. He said the same things about Georgia, and the same thing about Alabama and Mississippi. PPP just did a poll that shows that the Gingrich support has been migrating almost in total to Santorum.

If Gingrich suspends NOW, Santorum wins Wisconsin and North Carolina. He may win Connecticut, California, Oregon, and New York!. Montana passes from Gingrich to Santorum. Santorum becomes competitive in New Jersey. The other states which he is head or expected to be ahead in like Texas, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Montana, Kentucky, Indiana become landslides.

My projection as it is right now. Romney 1000 - 1100, Santorum 750 - 900, Gingrich 200 -250, and paul 75 - 101. If gingrich Drops Romney 900 - 1000, Santorum 900 - 1000, Gingrich 132 and Paul 101

The sad truth is this all comes down to Fox News. If they gave Paul the same support as Santorum, he would actually have a chance. But by ignoring him, they split the Repub vote between those who can think for themselves and move towards Paul, and the majority of Repubs who just follow Fox like lemmings.

In the general, Repubs will be split 3 ways... some voting party line for Romney, some going against the party and pushing Paul, and the Christian-taliban writing in Santorum (because they would never vote for a Mormon).

Everyone can see the Democrats are building up the country, in spite of the Republicans trying to tear it down. Get used to the idea of four more years of Obama. There is no better choice, so you might as well get used to it. No one even takes the Repuiblican party seriously anymore.

its sad to see we have a goup of soviet like socialists worshipping the socialist idealogy of Obama which is contrary to our constitution. A so called leader that apologizes to islamic terror groups, a leader that leaks information to a terrorist regime Iran of Isreals plans to place combat aircraft closer to Iran, A leader that constantly lies to the american people.

the latest is saying subsidies that allow purchase of machinery and equpment as tax deduction are taxpayers money going to the oil industry. oil has record profits of which 41% goes to the government in taxes. lets do math-18 cents per gallon excise tax for fedaral transportation projects and yet the current allocation is 109 billion. if you look at the sec filings of all the oil companies federal excise tax take is over 350 billion so where did the over 200billion in taxes go thats not in the tranportatin budget. my guess is to more of Obamas green failed goonie friends.

No. Only according to the American Petroleum Institute. According to other sources, they pay much, much less. Exxon/Mobil paid 13%. See here: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/26/us-usa-tax-bigoil-idUSBRE82P0DX20120326

Thanks to Scott Walker and Wisconsin Republicans for making it easier for President Obama to win Wisconsin in 2012.

He, and the Wisconsin Republicans have shown us repeatedly that they do not care about the working class, including and most notably, public sector workers by taking away their rights and the ability of all worker, public or private sector, to earn a living wage.

I'm sick and tired of public employees negotiating outrageous compensation packages with my tax dollars. If they want to join a union at a private company, more power to them. But as public employees, they get what they get...take it or leave it.

Jealousy will get you no where. If you want to better your own situation consider joining a union yourself. The article fails to mention Wisconsin has an open primary and many people who would never consider voting for a republican in the general election will cast votes in the up coming republican primary.

those public workers Dave...will put out the fire burning your house and rescue your children if they are trapped inside. Those workers will protect your neighborhood and come to your aid if needed. They will fix the streets you drive on everyday. Those public workers will care for your children and make sure they get a free education until they are 18.

Outrageous compensation??? 45k for a seasoned teacher...42k for firefighter...45k for a police officer

Why don't you start a volunteer program that will do all those things for FREE. Be an example, and go work on the highway while cars pass you by doing 65mph. Go run into a burning building. Go to be a teacher (especially in those states that require a Master's). Do all that for free because according to you, these people are stealing their neighbor tax money.

            Public unions should be illegal.

You are a true Republican: liberty to all except women, gays, minorities, the working class, and the poor. I'm sure some would just "love" the Tony Macs of the world who decided to severly cut the police force in Trenton, NJ and force more then a few into early retirement. Right at a time when drug crimes, gang related activity, and other such activities have been on the rise. Some are already suggesting Trenton might become the next Camden, NJ...

And ya know what? If there's something businesses can dislike more then these outragious taxes we have here in Jersey, it's getting robbed by armed thugs, and not feeling safe. Yeah, many are deciding as this all goes on, that Trenton isn't a good bet, and they'd be better off moving shop over to Bucks county, PA, where they won't have to worry as much about getting shot up; even while being asked to pay highest in the nation property taxes EVEN WHILE getting less protection from rising crime rates....

And while this is all going on, other states down south are deciding that hiering these forciebally "retired" cops from Jersey, might be a good deal, because they're already trained, and won't need training again. And as this is going on, Mack doesn't have to tell people exactly who's hands were in the cookie jar, and who stole the money out of the police pension plan all along; cause politicians hate to be heald to account.

Ya know, the ironic thing, least here in Jersey when they talk about cuts to education, is it's always cutting teachers, that gets heard about. And in the background many people asking:

              - Why does NJ have more school districts then the state of CA, in spite of the fact that CA is both a more populated state, and has more land mass

              - Why do so many schools today have 2 principles and 4 VPs

              - Why do we have so many super intendents, that many on local radio joke about them even having a super intendent of paper clips

              - Why when many of these supers are retireing, are they being given $800,000 retirement packages, even while there's talk about need to cut school services, and layoff teachers. The President's official salary (of course not counting campaign contributions, all those power lunches, and everything else) isn't nearly as high as that. I heard that one super in Phila, who only worked there 3 years, was given the $800k package to get them to retire early; and it isn't just there, because NJ has seen some of these outragious retirement packages as well.

Hell, Bergen county, requiring people to learn Spanish in elementary school now (because illegals won't learn English) decided to can the Spanish teacher, and replace it with Rosseta Stone. Someone would come in, put the CD in, and then (leave the room unattended with a bunch of young kids? wtf? lol). I guess if they need help with their homework, they can get the CD to answer their questions too /rofl And this, even while all the chiefs are kept, and given big reirement packages. Sounds a bit like too many chiefs, and not enough indians to me.... Keeping the 4 vice principles, but having elementary school kids learn by video professor :o /lol

Mormonism was founded in New York State in the early 1800's by Joseph Smith, who was not raised in any organized religion and was certainly not a Catholic. His parents were both independent religious zealots, which was fairly common in their time and place.

I admire Mormons in many ways, but their religious dogma is ridiculous. I find it hard to understand how anyone with an ounce of sense can buy into it. His religion will not help Romney in the general election.

I would not oppose Romney simply because he was a Mormon, but it's obvious that religion matters a lot to the Evangelicals. I hope they won't vote for a Mormon because Obama is a far better candidate than Romney on all counts. They'd do all of us a favor by sitting on their hands, rather than voting for Romney.

According to his own recorded history, Joseph Smiths parents had joined the Presbyterian church, and he was particular to the Methodist church.

The Mormon church provides the written account that he provided to newspapers and publishers available online here: www.lds.org/scriptures/pgp/js-h/1

Mormons believe that Joseph Smith was actually attempting to determine which religion he should join as he was investigating several of the different churches during 'the great revival' movement. He was more particular to the Methodist faith, but felt great conflict between that and his parents faith. He had thought about it extensively when he claims to have read James 1:5 in the Bible. He decided to ask in prayer which church to join. He then claims that he witnessed two personages, one of which was Christ who told him that he should join none of them.

They believe that he later was given instruction on how to restore the church as it was during the time of Christ, and they believe that he was given the authority to do so by those who had received it directly from Christ.

I know, its not quite as dramatic as a burning bush, or stone tablets written by the finger of God.

Most antagonists to the LDS faith like to demonize his parents, which is where the 'independent religious zealots' claim stems from.

I'm just hoping that whoever is elected will be a decent president, whoever they may be.

who gave the authority to form the catholic church?

                      His name was Jesus.

Among other things, he said: "Upon this rock I build my Church." "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations." "Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" "You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem ... and to the ends of the earth"

Who gave authority to the priests to rape small boys?

No one. And certainly not the Catholic Church, which demands that its priests be celibate. Celibacy means not having sex with ANYONE, not women, not men, not small boys.

Funny how a religious bigot will vilify an American priest for being Catholic, but not for being American. Seems to me you're as bad as Santorum; the only difference is whom you wish to oppress.

The only reason to vote for this welfare President is for hand outs. Is America really that sad? What happens when the hand outs stop due to no more money?

@ excaliburc, "Just what does Obama have in mind."

That is easy to answer, Obama has told us all many times, but we never listened.

Over his almost 4 years in office, since Obama was Chair for the UN, he and his administration has routinely cited the "Authority" of the United Nations over the US Constitution, the United States of America.

President Obama sent a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner in which he boldly asserted the "Authority" of international powers over and above the US Constitution.

Obama, Panetta, and Dempsey openly declared that they do NOT represent the American people and instead are representatives for a global dictatorship that has usurped the sovereignty of the United States.

The Pentagon (through Gen. Martin Dempsey), President Obama, along with US. Defense Secretary Panetta have declared a Coup D'etat (takeover by a foreign entity, person, or nation) on our Constitutional government by giving the United Nations "Supreme Authority" over the US.

                      His "discussion" with the Russians...

NDAA, extension of the Patriot Act, warrantless searches, warrantless wire tapping, warrantless tracking of US citizens, etc all of his ACTIONS tell us what he is truly saying to us, not the speeches written by his "writers" and approved by his handler (David again, right? The same one who got the awards for "Obama, the presidenticial candidate").

We have been told in videos, in writing, in speeches, by the laws, bills, etc Obama has passed, so I am not sure what exactly you are not clear on? I find Obama's actions to be perfectly clear, not American, or at least not a free American way of life.

Obama will be re-elected in spite of all the GOP lies, BS, brainwashing and obstructionism. The Republicans have no one who can hold a candle to him. The GOP has no plan to help middle class Americans thrive, no plan to create jobs, no plan to reform health care, no plan to keep us safe, no plan to build infrastructure or improve public education. I shudder to imagine this country under the control of those greedy pigs.

The GOP's core constituency is the wealthy and the corporate elite. Since their numbers are too small to win them an election as dogcatcher, they have cobbled together an unholy assortment of bigots, misogynists, religious loonies, gun nuts, survivalists, and just plain lazy, ignorant, stupid people. It's disheartening to see how many people have been brainwashed to vote against their own self interests just to coddle the rich and the powerful.

Wish the election was tomorrow so that we can get Obama and his ilk out of the White House. Gas is going to hit 4.00. Food inflation is plus 30% and rising, thanks to Obama's pushing the use of corn for an additive in fuel. Price Inflation of 25% or more is occurring with Clothing, airfares, automobiles and practically everything else due to rising gasoline prices. Obama is trying to push a tax increase through on the major oil companies. This will translate into even higher prices for everything. Obama continues to block drilling for oil at every opportunity. He continues to subsidize failed green energy companies, draining the federal coffers. Obama is out of control and must be voted out of office.

You make it sound like voting him out is going to reverse all of those. Regardless of who wins the presidency, we're still going to have to deal with a congress that refuses to compromise and talks out of both sides of its mouth. We'll still have a deficit either running wild with Social Security/Medicare or running wild with Defense spending. We'll still have a president who says one thing and does another. The rich will continue to flourish while the poor will continue to scrape by. Corporations will continue to milk every bit of profit they can. It'll just be SSDD in America.

Gas is going to hit 4.00? Go to Illinois, President Obama's homestate, its been well over 4.00 for quite some time. Its a good thing even his OWN party voted down his ridiculous plan to end oil subsidies. Even democrats understand that if the subsidies are ended gas prices will rise even higher.

I can't wait until Nov to vote this president out of office. Then just maybe we can get this country going in the right direction again. Yes he inherited a horrible mess, but he has done NOTHING to improve it. All he cares about is giving our tax dollars to his buddies. Don't give me the "Republicans are obstructionists" crap, the republican representatives are voting how their constituents want them to. The majority (over 65%) of the people think the AHCA should be repealed and that is is unconstitutional. President Obama has wasted over 18 months on this legislation, shouldn't a Constitutional Law professor have known it was unconstitutional?

Instead of moving the country forward, this president has become a race baiter, (twice) and has divided this country more than ANY past president.

When is this president going to call out the New Black Panther's for further inflaming a true tragedy.

WE do NOT need to drill. We need to stop them from making it our biggest export, which it is right now.

Supply and demand play little to no role in the price of oil these days. The United States actually exports a large amount of its domestically produced oil to other countries. Ironically, it is one of the few things that the United States is actually an exporter of considering how almost every other domestic industry has been shipped overseas by design. According to USA Today, the U.S. exported so much oil in the first nine months of 2011 that it might be the first year since 1949 that the U.S. is a net exporter of oil and oil-based goods. Plus the US has been increasing its crude oil production every year since 2008. Meanwhile the stagnant global economy has experienced a reduction in oil demand since oil's previous peak in 2008.

Nevertheless, oil produced and drilled inside the United States is not required to stay inside the United States. It can go wherever the producer can achieve the highest price. Therefore, increasing the amount of oil produced inside the United States would not likely change the forces of the market. Therefore, to suggest that the increase in production would result in greater energy independence for the United States is simply untrue.

The issue of oil/gas prices - what evidence we have been given to show us that the increased availability of oil will lower the price of oil and gas at the pump. The fact is, we have been given no evidence that this will be the case. Indeed, the evidence that we do have shows that results will be quite the opposite. Case in point: Since 2009, gas prices have more than doubled, yet U.S. domestic oil production has steadily risen. In fact, Obama himself has followed along with the plan touted by reactionaries like Gingrich and Romney when he opened vast swaths of American coastline to oil companies for offshore drilling in 2010. If Gingrich’s solutions are legitimate, then Americans should have been seeing their prices decrease over the last three years. They haven’t.

This is because of the radical idea that oil companies are not necessarily concerned with the national interest nor are they concerned with the pain felt at the pump by the average consumer. Major international oil companies are actually nothing more than an international cartel bent on making astronomical profits for themselves regardless of the consequences to the consumer.

Although gas prices will no doubt occasionally go down from time to time, the trend unquestionably moves upward. When there is downward trend in demand (i.e. the economy is in the tank and no one can afford gas), prices still miraculously go up due to “lack of demand.” When there is an increase in demand, prices still go up because a “lack of capacity,” “scarcity,” or some other market-centered or manufactured excuse. Regardless of the situation, the prices inevitably move up. This is the hallmark of a cartel.

Indeed, Sara Banaszak of the American Petroleum Institute confirmed this fact when she stated to the Washington Post, “I wouldn’t say you would expect inventories to dictate the direction of prices.” By this, she means that higher oil inventories do not equal lower prices.

One need only look to Canada to see this play out. For instance, Canada produces over one million barrels more than they consume daily and have almost ten times the amount of proven oil reserves than does the United States. Regardless, gas price spikes occur Canada almost identically to those in the United States because of global cartel price setting.

Indeed, it is also important for Americans to understand that what they consider to be “their” oil companies are anything but. Oil is an international business and the major corporations who deal in this business are likewise international. Borders are essentially meaningless to them. In short, major oil companies do not have the national interest at heart.

The major oil companies such as EXXON MOBIL, CHEVRON, and AMOCO (now owned by BP) as well as others were once Standard Oil, owned by the infamous Rockefeller family which is still a large owner by virtue of holdings in major international banks. These companies colluded openly with I.G. Farben of Nazi Germany fame and helped make the Third Reich possible. Although many years ago, this only goes to show how much national loyalty these international companies hold. Considering the views that the Rockefeller’s have held regarding national sovereignty, it would not be wise to assume that they hold energy independence in high regard. To be sure, a nation that is able to stand on its own two feet and resist globalism would not be in the best interest of the globalists.

, considering the views of the Rockefeller family and the CEO’s of these companies as well as the basic nature of business, one would also find it unwise to assume that their goal is to provide cheap energy to the American people.

The fact that more oil does not equal lower prices is relatively well established by our current experience. But what are the causes of rising gas prices? Obviously, the traditional laws of supply and demand still play a small role. However, as has already been demonstrated, the oil industry has been so dominated by the international cartel network of corporations and banking institutions that prices now rise regardless of the level of supply or demand.

Greed, of course, is another major issue and one that has been the focus of much resentment toward the industry. While Americans have suffered under record gas prices this year, the five major oil companies – EXXON MOBIL, Royal Dutch Shell, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, and BP – all raked in massive fourth quarter profits of $137 billion. The oil companies enjoyed these profits while retaining a cash reserve of approximately $58 billion and; and on top of that, they receive large subsidies and tax breaks from the U.S. government.

Dollar devaluation also plays a role in the rising price of gasoline as oil is denominated in U.S. dollars. A recent Forbes Magazine report entitled, Gasoline Prices Are Not Rising, The Dollar Is Falling, explored this issue somewhat. It presents the drastic decline of U.S. purchasing power as essentially the only (or at least the main) cause of rising gas prices. Simon Black& recently showed how the price of gas is actually in a deflationary spiral if it was purchased in gold. And yesterday, Ron Paul confronted Bernanke about the issue of devalued Federal Reserve Notes in regards to gas higher prices by telling Bernanke when he took over at the Fed in 2006, an ounce of silver bought about 4 gallons of gas, where as today it will buy nearly three times that amount.

While the loss of the dollar’s value is a major factor, it is by no means the only one.

Speculation, however, seems to be one of the most important factors regarding the price of oil and gas worldwide. In this regard, one can even see the hand of the usual suspects who have made a living for generations on the back of the “small people.”

Indeed, in a report that came out about this time last year, Goldman Sachs, an infamous institution of speculation, freely admitted that speculators like themselves are responsible for a $27 a barrel hike in the price of crude oil. The speculation trade, according to Goldman Sachs, has been known to provide investors with returns of up to 25% of their investment in four months.

Alain Sherter of CBS News wrote shortly after the initial report and admission by Goldman Sachs,

How much does speculation drive up oil prices? By roughly 20 percent, or between $21.40 and $26.75 a barrel, Goldman suggested. Every million barrels of oil held by speculators results in a price of 8-10 percent. Not surprisingly, such increases coincide with record levels of oil futures, Commodity Futures Trading Commission officials note. Since June 2008, the number of energy contracts held by such investors has risen 64 percent.

Likewise, as Webster Griffin Tarpley wrote in his seminal work “Surviving the Cataclysm,”

Banks like JP Morgan Chase, Citibank, and the Bank of America long ago gave up providing commercial bank services in the form of loans to companies seeking to purchase new plant and equipment for new capital investment and job creation. The banks do not discount commercial paper anymore. They deal in derivatives and speculation, and little else. A year ago, JP Morgan Chase had $93 TRILLION in derivatives of certain types – more than six times the total Gross Domestic Product of the United States, and this is a very low-ball estimate indeed. When they were still investment banks, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley created the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in London to facilitate their oil futures speculation; there are indications that Goldman and Morgan between them accounted for almost half of the run-up of the world oil price, meaning in effect that these two criminal organizations were responsible for almost 25% of the total price of oil. This means that about a quarter out of every dollar paid at the gas pump by commuters, cab drivers, and truckers was going to subsidize Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Oil boomlet sweeps U.S. as exports and production rise

                              By Wendy Koch, USA TODAY

Looking at your heating bills or gas prices, you may find it surprising that the United States is enjoying a mini oil boom. It's producing more crude oil and, for the first time in decades, has become a net exporter of petroleum products such as jet fuel, heating oil and gasoline. The U.S. exported more oil-based fuels than it imported in the first nine months of this year, making it likely that 2011 will be the first time since 1949 that the nation is a net exporter of such goods, primarily diesel.

Not all are cheering. The changes are exacting a brutal toll on the nation's health and environment, says Susan Casey-Lefkowitz of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), citing the greenhouse gas emissions of producing and refining fossil fuels.

The price of gas is because of speculators.

The price of gasoline cannot be controlled by the president or congress. Do you understand that or should I say it again more slowly? Right now the US is a net exporter or crude oil. Got that? It means we have more crude oil than we need. The Keystone pipeline would not have helped, because that oil would have been piped to Texas where it would have been loaded on tankers and exported. Can you spell "exported"? So give your complaining about crude oil, gas prices, the Keystone pipeline and lack of drilling a rest.

Bob--presenting facts to the Republican tribalists is a waste of time. The more facts , the fiercer they hold on to their " beliefs ", even to their own detriment. How they believe cutting taxes for the rich and giving more oil subsidy money from their taxes is going to benefit them is beyond me. Romney paid less pc of taxes than they did. Just tribalism.

There is no legitimacy to Obama's administration! The guy just can't tell the truth, but the old liberal media is very clever in their denial of his lies and broken promises.

Even now the media is spinning the story that the repeal of obamacare will be good for Obama and the democrats, lol! And what's funnier.... the liberals will swallow that story!

Does Santorum and Romney ever mention GW Bush on the campaign trail when things were so good before President Obama came in and ruined everything? Just a few facts for you to ponder; Over 3000 dead in the world trade bombing, over 5000 servicemen and women dead and 20,000 wounded in a lieing unfounded war, the almost complete collapse of the banking system when Bush begged President Obama to rush to Washington to vote for the Tarp program which he did while McCain said th economy was doing fine. Not to mention Bin Laden and a lot of his extreme religious Muslims erased. jus wunnerin

Is it fair to penalize the residents of poorly run and financially mismanaged states by removing Social Security and Medicare from federal control? Is it fair for children who live in poor states, towns or neighborhoods to receive an inferior education?

How would that benefit the future of The United States of America? Remember 'one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all'? Or don't you believe in that?

While I judge Reagan a RELATIVELY competent President, he in fact used a teleprompter, as did most all recent POTUS.

Perhaps someone can let us all know why it’s acceptable for a Republican to use a teleprompter
and not O.K. for Obama…it makes no sense, plain illogical and bogus.

The following appeared in several major newspapers during the Reagan presidency.

                              Teleprompter Snafu Brings Reagan Pause

                              May 09, 1985|United Press International

WASHINGTON — President Reagan, often spoken of as "the great communicator" for his eloquent and persuasive style, was noticeably at a loss for words when his teleprompter broke down during a major
speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France Wednesday.

White House press secretary Larry Speakes said, Reagan`s teleprompter cut out three times causing
the president to lose his place. Nonetheless, "It`s our opinion the president spoke eloquently", he said.

What people just don't get is that if unions arn't there to fight for wages etc and a better way of life the people that arn't union won't have it either. If you arn't a union worker and the Walkers get their way, just smile as your wages, vacations etc go down and disappear. The only reason you get what you get is because they worry you might want to organize.

I believe Santorium should be the front runner in the GOP. I know him from PA and he was very good at his job he held here. As for Rommey, its all about MONEY. Since he has been indorsed by George W. Bush, there goes our country. President Obama has done his best for the people of America, but it was George Bush that took us into war and ruined this country. What do you think Rommey is going to do. So the debt ceiling is high, but once Rommey gets in, the money will go to the Republicans instead of the american people. Just look around what has been happening to the United States will all the last 4 presidents going back to Clinton. Rommey is not going to lower gas prices, not going to help and recove the United states or even make it better. President Obama is the only president that does not come from money and if you look at all the individuals that are in charge of their countries they did not come from money either. So go ahead and vote for Rommey, but when this country falls worse then it is now, who will be to blame. Just like President Obama Rick Santorium are alike. Family.

TXHorseman, read the writing on the wall. Texas had a 45.3% non-Hispanic white population as of the 2010 census, in other words a minority white non-Hispanic population. Hispanics were 37.6% of the total, and the fastest-growing segment of your population.

Your choice is to embrace Hispanics and assist them in being productive, educated, employed citizens of your state for the future of Texas, or continue to marginalize Hispanics and watch as your state sinks further under in the rankings of education and health care.

So, which way do you think Texas should go?

The Republicans are fighting each other tooth and nail to be the White Knight to the Uber Wealthy!

Paul Ryan and Gang just voted yesterday to keep the Tax Breaks going to Big Oil and to do away with Social Security and Medicare Insurance.

                                JUST YESTERDAY!

                                What a Bunch of Dirtbags.

I hope they feel safe in their gated communities because if the Republicans keep protecting their Wealthy Buddies, their Security Details and Wrought Iron Fences won't save them from the Anger of the 99%!

There will be riots out there that will make the Rodney King Riots look like Child s Play.

The GOP wants the ACA thrown out as 'unconstitutional'. Please do read up on the number of people who will lose health-care and how much that will cost all of us to pay for their needs when that happens. And, how much the rest of us will pay for heath-care without insuring pre-existing conditions. And, there are hundreds of thousands who retired early under their ACA coverage who will also lose coverage. Do you think those +50 year olds will be able to find affordable health care?

The GOP is not fessing up about what a reversal would cost us. And then there's Romneycare in MA. How soon before its constitutionality is challenged? How will Romney defend his plan if the ACA loses? Romney and his advisors were architects of the ACA plan. No way to spin that.

Then there's the fact that the GOP has no other plan than to gut our health-care programs and SS, raise taxes and the burden on the poor and middle-class even more with the Ryan budget along with even larger tax breaks to those already not paying their fair share.

The GOP hates the poor, the middle-class, the disabled, the elderly, young people, students, all minorities, and oh yeah - all women. Their goal is to further dumb-down their minions, keep the womenfolk barefoot and pregnant, and force upon us their good ol' boy religion while they destroy our environment and our country.

Remember in November and vote the GOP out.

And the Democrats hate anyone who has money, since their core belief is that all money should be "shared" with people who need it.

Nice try Tom. Another GOP talking point that is not true.

The GOP wants the 99% to pay an even greater share of the tax burden when all the 99% really wants is for the 1% to pay their fair share for all the entitlements they have been given that helped them along their way to prosperity.

Romney paid less than 15% in taxes on his millions of income. The majority of teachers, public workers, union workers, and most of the middle class fall into a higher tax rate than that. My family fell into Romney's tax bracket on less than $50K of income.

Sorry Tom, that's not hatred. That's just not right.

The one who should have gotten in a long time ago was Ross Perot, but the Republican One Percenters hounded him out of the running

That he did, but he isn't here now. Ron Paul is. Slim to no chance but here just the same. I think if people weren't so babied and coddled by the government to stay home and get fat, a lot of our problems would go away. If we brought our troops home and concentrated on our country that would help tremendously. If we stopped giving money we don't have in foreign aid, big help. Only one person would make that happen, or at least get the ball rolling. And that person is Ron Paul.

In your household, do you spend it even though you don't have it? Or any way to pay it back? Doesn't sound very responsible to me, but that is how you all want to roll. Broke, and going deeper in debt! $4 dollar gas! $5 for a gallon of milk! We are in a recession!

This entire Republican nominating process has been like a run for president of the 3rd grade with a bunch of snot-nosed little rich kids whose goal is to get more cookies and the best table for their friends on lunch break, and to be considered the cool kids. Except that I think it would be less dangerous to have a 3rd grader running this country than any of the Republicans. As an independent voter, I can't wait till November when President Obama can get about the business of repairing the damage that Bush/Cheney did without the interference of the Republican controlled congress nor the distraction of these spoiled rich kids who want his job even though they have zero qualifications.

"...they have zero qualifications." What qualifications does Obama have? Romney and for that matter Hillary are far better qualified than Obama. The democrats should have fielded some of their leading experienced politicians in a primary and replaced Obama. Since they did not the decision will be easy for me come November. Replace Obama, Reid, Boehner!

Republicans have offered up the most worthless collection of candidates in the history of this nation with no ideas to fix anything other than the failed policies of the past. Talking about birth control, birth certificates, Teleprompters, college transcripts and wars on religion while yelling socialist and Marxist over and over doesn’t attract many voters. And if you don’t come up with some new ideas and find an entirely new group of leaders, a Democrat will win in 2016.

Romney thinks LAWYERS should decide if we should go to war! If you still doubt what Ron Paul has to offer, please look at his platform. It's like watching Thomas Jefferson in the modern day. You get it Fox, but unfortunately the millions who live on the government dole don't want that. Nor does big business, as their low tax rates would go for a ride. The working middle class needs Ron Paul, but we are outnumbered, and with that, we are doomed. I'm still going to vote for Ron Paul, as he is the only chance my son has of being able to live the American dream.
