LOS ANGELES -- As a Republican primary race increasingly defined by demographics and math drags into April, a daunting demographic mountain looms on the horizon for Mitt Romney if he becomes the GOP presidential nominee: winning over Latino voters who could prove to be pivotal in November.
For Republicans, the math is simple -- and harsh. There are 38.7 million Latinos in the United States, making them the country's largest minority group, according to the most recent Census data. And a recent poll shows if the election were held today, Latino voters would break decisively in President Obama's favor over Romney, to the tune of a 70% to 14% drubbing.
That's worse than John McCain's performance in the 2008 election, when exit polls showed him winning just 31% of the Latino vote. In 2004, George W. Bush won re-election -- narrowly -- after getting some 40% of the Latino vote.
The recent poll of 1,200 likely Latino voters, conducted for Fox News and released March 7, also shows approval ratings for Romney and the Republican Party among this demographic group. Only 25% of respondents viewed Republicans positively, while 60% said they had unfavorable views of the GOP. For Romney, the numbers were slightly better -- 24% favorable, 44% unfavorable.
With Latino-heavy states like Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, and Nevada expected to be major general election battlegrounds this fall, those numbers could add up to disaster for Republican efforts to retake the White House.
Some Democrats see Romney's and the Republican party's potential general election problems with Latinos as entirely self-inflicted. The reason: Those in the party who are most opposed to illegal immigration have become the loudest voices.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the chairman of the Democratic National Convention in 2012 and a prominent Obama campaign surrogate, told a group of reporters Tuesday that he saw Romney's opposition to the DREAM Act as "problematic" and his concept of self-deportation for illegal immigrants as "beyond the pale."
The DREAM Act, which was unable to win 60 Senate votes in late 2010, is legislation that would provide legal status and a path to citizenship to illegal immigrants who are working toward a college degree or who served in the U.S. military.
"I don't know what their strategy is," Villaraigosa responded when asked how he thought Republicans might successful get Latino voters back into the tent this fall. "I'm trying to figure it out."
"I think he's going to have to walk back to the center on the DREAM Act," Villaraigosa, himself of Mexican descent, told reporters, noting of Romney dismissively, "He'll be the first candidate from a major party not to support comprehensive immigration reform."
Villaraigosa predicted Romney may try to add a name with cache among Latinos to the ticket -- Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush came quickly to mind -- but said he saw no particular policy issues for the Republicans and Romney to use to get Latinos back into the GOP tent.
But picking Rubio, who endorsed Romney on Wednesday night, is not a panacea. Only 24% of Latino voters surveyed in the Fox poll said having Rubio on the ticket would make them more likely to vote for the Republican nominee.
But looking closely at poll numbers brings out possible a silver lining for Republicans, and particularly for Romney. Fully 50% of the Latino respondents in the Fox poll said the economy would be the issue that most influenced their vote this fall, and Obama's economic approval rating (while still high at 58%) was lower than his overall approval among Latinos.
Furthermore, despite a narrow majority describing themselves as strong a Democrat, Democrat, or lean Democrat, half of all respondents also described themselves as conservative or strong solid conservative, suggesting the possibility of a crossover vote in the fall, should the economy remain the dominant issue.
The importance of the economy to Latino voters has not been lost on the Romney campaign. In an interview last fall, the Romney campaign's director of national outreach, James Garcia, told NBC News that campaign believed Romney's laser focus on the economy could help win over Latino voters.
"Right now, Hispanic voters are concerned. They're concerned about the economy. They're concerned about whether they're going to have a job tomorrow. Whether their brother, their sister or their neighbor is going to have a job tomorrow, and that's the situation we're in, just because of the failure that this president has been,' Garcia said.
Villaraigosa acknowledged the preeminence of the economy in his chat with reporters Tuesday, admitting "We're sitting in the worst economy since the 1930's."
In that, Romney's campaign sees an opening to win over the Latino vote on the strength of their tried and true economic message.
"There's probably nothing more important right now to Hispanic voters than the discussion, the conversation about what a presidential candidate is going to do about jobs and the economy, what we're going to do to turn this economy around," Garcia said.

The vote on "Obama's budget" was not actually his budget. "Democrats said Republicans had forced a vote on a version of Obama’s budget that contained only its numbers, not the policies he would use to achieve them.
I think we are all tired of these types of tricks of Congress. If they spent a fraction of the time that they waste on tactics to make the other side look bad, and used it to actually get something done, their approval rating would rise to double digits.
So my girlfriend was in line at CVS Pharmacy in the city of Brockton where we live. In line were two other Caucasians (I should specify “white” Caucasians). The women at the register was also white, my girlfriend was the only one under 60 years old.
A large male walked in with an oversized hoodie over his head. My girlfriend’s first reaction was that it started to rain out. As the man approached the line he shouted threateningly “All you whities angry about a black boy being shot?” “I didn’t think so, nobody cares about the black kid”. After pacing around for what seemed like an eternity the man heading toward the exit yelling “I’m too pissed off to shop I’m out of here.” My girlfriend whispered to the cashier that you should “call the police”. The cashier who looked as terrified as they all were said “Shhh, I think he’s leaving”.
As a couple minutes passed my girlfriend went to leave and the two elderly folks were in the vestibule watching the guy in the hoodie lunge towards cars yelling at the occupants. They all remained there for a bit longer until the man left the area.
We’re 2000 miles away from where this isolated tragedy occurred. Where is this country’s leadership to calm the situation? Instead we have an elected official in congress wearing a hoodie. We have “obama hoodies” for sale. We have liberal media stations ramping up racial tensions. We have the Black Panther party putting a “dead or alive” bounty on the shooter (who may have been justified in his action). Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Spike Lee, I don’t even know what to say about them.
But my girlfriend and the others in the store were fearful and felt very threatened. Who’s to blame for that? Zimmerman? The police in Florida? Not in my book.
To bad we don’t have anyone out there with a national presence that can try to calm the tensions before someone else gets hurt or killed.

I think Obama didn't go far enough in a lot of ways.
I would've liked to see him execute on his guantanamo bay, ending all wars, etc.
I would've liked to see single-payer.
But even with all his shortcomings, I'm sure not voting for Romney. He has zip, zero, zilch, nada to offer me.
I don't off-shore, I keep all my employees spread throughout the US. Developers in San Jose, marketing in Pittsburg, Sales in Michigan. So he doesn't help me here.
I have no problems paying higher taxes, and think we need a more progressive tax rate. I am not, however, going to be the 'only' sucker paying higher taxes. I want everyone in my bracket to pay more. So he doesn't suit me here.
I think Roe v Wade is necessary evil. It's better than unthinkable alternatives like the womb-invasion-theorem that Santorum and Co spouts off. So he alienates me here.
He has yet to actually give any detailed policy position, instead generalities and hypocritical statements (lower taxes, reduce debt!) designed for stupid people to swallow up whole. So he pisses me off here.
So will I ever vote Romney?

He doesn't match up with a single one of my core beliefs. My company exists in synergy to give jobs AND make me a tidy profit. Not as a vulture to pick over the flesh of the walking-dead. I'd rather be in a position to think about a pension plan than in a position to look at selling out for the millinz.
Hope I'm not alone there.
Yesterday there were about 7-8 men leaving a hotel with their bags to head for the airport. As I was walking towards the front door of the hotel to enter it, one of the gentleman stopped at the front door in front of me and was talking to the other men who were behind me. He saw me standing there patiently while he finished his conversation. And when he finished his conversation, he opened the door to the lobby and went in, not bothering to hold the door for me. The door basically shut in my face. He had a southern accent and was in his 40's it appeared. And yes, he saw me.
This morning. I was walking towards the front door of the hotel to enter, at the same time three black males were just about to exit. I held the door for the men as they were leaving and only two walked through the door and as they were leaving, both smiled and thanked me. The third man stopped and motioned for me to come through the door first. He then smiled and said that he hoped I had a nice day.
Someone who works in the hotel saw this incident and he came over to me and said that the three men were athletes from the Utah Jazz. I didn't realize it at that moment because athletes who come to town usually wear jackets with their team name shown. They weren't wearing them this morning. btw, Utah lost last night to the Celtics, which didn't stop these men from behaving in such a classy manner.
Not all, but maybe half of the people who work in this hotel lobby are Latino. I can't begin to tell you how nice they are. They are professional and they are incredibly friendly. You can see it in their eyes how much they love working and living here. Their smiles are contagious. They get so caught up in our local sports teams that's it hard for any of us to walk by them without catching up with the drama of each particular sports season. They look to be in their 20's and 30's.
I can't for the life of me understand why people wouldn't want to make their lives easier and more secure.
I vaguely remember an interview Katharine Hepburn did when she was living in NYC towards the end of her life. And she said basically that we are all stuck with each other and wouldn't it be better if we just respected each other? Wouldn't it be better if we just treated each other with dignity? It doesn't cost a damn thing.

Republicans don't seem to want to be a part of society, unless it's on their terms. And their terms only. And they are willing to drag everybody down with them in the meantime. But they're going to lose. And lose big.
People are more mature than that; most people care about the future of others. Most people treat others with respect. Most people truly don't care what's bothering the tea party these days. We honestly don't care. They need to get on with their lives and enjoy it. Everybody else is.

I think that Romney has also alienated the 99%...or at least the 85%. He unfortunately seems to have lived his entire life in the upper, upper income level and doesn't seem to know how to relate to the rest of us. His gaffes seem to come from a genuine world view. That's not a good sign.

Romney plan is to raise taxes on the poor to pay for more tax cuts for his rich friends.

What we need is a President who will promise us Healthcare that someone else pays for, Amnesty for illegals, Extended unemployment, Cheap Education, Replace the centuries of pride in our military with Gay Pride, Buy us car companies in exchange for our union votes, Bring our terrorist enemies to NY for civilian trials, Hire more union cops and fire fighters on credit and bill it to our kids, Teach our daughters to let someone else pay for thier birth control and tax the crap out of anyone who makes more than $250k a year......

In your world only a select few have health care coverage, our borders are closed to anyone who doesn't look and speak like us, people out of work are turned out onto the street with no food, we become the nation of illiterates where only a handful of people who can afford college succeed, we deny talented people the right to serve our country, we allow businesses to close needlessly and in the process throw hudreds of thousands of people out of work and cause the closing of smaller businesses that provide goods and services to the big business putting even more hundreds of thousands of people out of work, (evidently bailing out wall street was ok because Romney said that was a good idea), deny women access to affordable birth control and family planning; and only the middle class and working poor pay taxes.

The "Tribes" or "Tribal members" do not receive money from the USA--indeed the USA admits to owing more than 100 billion, but still refuses to pay.
In reality, the tribes who have any kind of corporate income, i.e. gaming facilities pay a collective 63% in "income taxes" on each dollar of "revenue";
the tribe makes "per capita payments to the members" ---then pays 35% corporate tax on the remaining "profits".
The "individuals who receive "per capita payments pay a 29 % income tax on that money---apart from their other income on a special IRS form (look it up*)
That means that people who are owed billions by the USA pay the highest rate of taxes of any other entity----no other minority would tolerate that but a defeated people; or ones who know they are dealing with a criminal nation: we are not a defeated people....................we just deal with them for the money.

Latino voter registrations this year are down from 2008. Fact is, Latinos are important only in states such as California, which will go Democratic no matter how many Latinos were added to it. In the bulk of states, Latinos are far less a factor than other Americans, such as blue collar workers in Rust Belt states--states where amnesty would not play well.

thats right nurse we the people are the enemy of the country by not exrcising our obligation of studying the backgrounds of the candidates. we flip a coin or make our choices by listening to the lying media, this is irresponsible.
we are bound by the constitution to make sound and informed decisions: I myself spend many hours looking at the issues and the backgrounds of the candidates and not influenced by the biased views of the media.
Any minute now Romney will drag out his Mexican cousins for us all to meet! (He hasn't met them yet, but what the heck if it helps get the Latino vote).
Romney should well with the Latino votes in the coming months. many latinos came here here for freedom and prosperity like many other immigrants including my dad from Ireland. Obamas soviet like socialist ideas are already destroying that dream. lets not forget his attacks on the catholic church which many Latinos are of the catholic background. Obamas attack of forcing the church to go against its beliefs with the birth control is another example of his soviet like socialist idealogy which is also against the foundation of our constitution.
You now its funny, most of the Hispanics I know here in Texas are okay with the voter I.D law, they are okay with Texas's new no-federal funding for abortion(yes most of them are catholic) and they are pretty cool with our dream act Perry passed. And yet Mittens will get the GOP nomination.....while Perry who sucks at public speaking is looking at another win come election time should he run. Most of my friends are legal, however the couple of illegals (working on becoming legal) I know are all about avoiding any voter fraud, they say and I quote " we ran to America to get away from the buying of our govt officials and the lies they spew and the votes they buy or steal, we do not believe in abortion and most certainly should not have to pay for someone else sin, and if the govt has the money why shouldn't they help our immigrants with college to better acclimate them to your society." While I do not completely agree with the dream act opinion, it just goes to show that Perry has done what he can to help anyone wishing to better themselves and publicly stated we can not blame the children for the parents mistakes.
Ron Paul 2012.....at least to debate with Obama. Need a brain to debate with Obama and Ron Paul is the only one who has one!! He wouldn't win but he might give Obama some darn good ideas and thats really all Obama needs right now!!! He needs a good concrete plan to right the wrongs and correct the system and seeing these comments, we are really a 50-50 nation right now! You guys want Obama, fine have Obama, but he NEEDS HELP and if taking a few of Ron Pauls ideas and using them would help then we need to let him jump at the chance. Mittens is not going to be any help and Obama has already been briefed on the issues we do not know about(classified stuff), so lets get some better ideas into Obama. And who knows he might tick off some more demos but well, thats love and war folks!!!
