President Obama on Thursday urged passage of a bill before the Senate that would limit existing tax breaks for the nation's largest oil and gas companies.
Speaking in the Rose Garden, Obama said Congress “can either vote to spend billions of dollars on oil subsidies that keep us trapped in the past. Or they can vote to end these taxpayer subsidies so that we can invest in the future. It’s that simple.”
He criticized Congress for thinking “up until this point” that “it’s a good idea to send billions more of your tax dollars to the oil industry.”
He added that such energy companies are “doing just fine” without the extra tax boost, noting that the three biggest oil companies saw more than $80 billion in profits alone last year.
“It’s not like these are companies that can’t stand on their own,” he continued.
According to the White House, Obama’s Rose Garden audience included representatives from energy, business and environmental groups as well as people who posted about the impact of higher fuel prices on the White House websites and social media.
The Senate was expected to vote on the “Repeal Big Oil Subsidies Act” shortly after the president spoke. The bill, written by Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez (NJ) would repeal over $20 billion in tax breaks to the major oil and gas companies: BP, Exxon, Shell, Chevron and Conoco Phillips.
The Senate voted overwhelmingly to bring the bill up for debates, but Republicans will oppose its final passage; the GOP had looked to set up a broader debate over gas prices, and they have assailed the Democratic proposal as a de facto tax hike.
Earlier today, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell criticized Democrats for pushing the bill, which he said won’t do anything to lower gas prices.
"That was their brilliant plan on how to deal with gas prices: raise taxes on energy,” McConnell said, criticizing Senate Democrats for allowing a “tedious” amount of what he said were strictly politicized show votes.
UPDATE, 12 p.m.: Noting that Obama has been calling for oil industry tax incentives since his first term in office, the RNC released a statement saying, “President Obama will say and do anything it takes to get reelected even if it means doing a Rose Garden photo-op to pretend increasing energy taxes will lower gas prices. This is just more smoke and mirrors from a president who doesn’t have an energy policy while Americans struggle to pay higher gas prices at the pump.”

About time we put an end to corporate welfare!
Now we can sit back and watch what the oil whores in Congress do or don't do...
I see where McTurtle is already on
Edit:
I see where McTurtle has already declared his allegiance to Exxon-Mobile and such!
Oh yes, McTurtle works for Exxon-Mobile.
Congress should have to wear jackets with logo's showing who pays them off. At least we will understand clearly who they speak for. Here's a clue, it's not We the People.
DCIA,
Like NASCAR teams & their corporate sponsors - how appropriate! ;o)
Rand Paul, Grand Libertarian and Heir to the Throne, asked on the Senate floor (and I'm paraphrasing here): Why would you ever end subsidies to a successful business? Why, indeed. Government should butt out, says Rand. Except when it shouldn't.
Another Republican Senator said that ending the subsidy would amount to levying "a tax" on the oil industry. And everyone breathed a sigh of relief when 1984 came and went and nothing Orwell had predicted came true.
Feisty, As usual, McConnell skews the issues and gets on his blame wagon.
NOTHING this Congress or President does or says will change the global oil market - because oil is a global commodity. And every country, regardless of size or oil output, is subject to the exact same fluctuations in oil prices.
Ending the centuryold $4Billion tax subsidy to Big Oil will not change U.S. gas prices either.
But that money can be re-directed towards developing new sources of energy production - which will break our DEPENDENCE on foreign oil and the ups and downs of the global market.
Mr. GOP Switcheroo/DoNothing/Just Kill Jobs at his McFinest.
I agree with Feisty on this issue, but to borrow the words of Obama's Million dollar supporter, Bill Maher, she is still a slunt and @!$%#. Hey, that is still just as funny as when Bill Maher said it.
Dear old bob, never let the truth get in the way of a good lie. Bill Maher never said those words. He called Palin a c word once. Just once. Rush spent 3 (three) days making up lies and then demeaning women for three days having the nerve to speak up for herself.
I keep repeating the 3 days because you seem to believe that saying something once is equal to three days of Rush's made up lies to abuse women.
If Rush had called Miss Fluke a c word once, no one would ever have ever noticed.
So when you have a tape of Bill Maher ranting for three days and all with make up lies about a college student or anyone else for that matter, then we could compare.
VOTE FOR WOMEN'S FREEDOM....VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Oil companies receive tax incentives for exploration expenses.
Manufacturing companies receive tax incentives new equipment purchases.
Pharmaceutical companies receive tax incentives for R & D expenses.
Homeowners receive tax incentives (interest deductions). Renters do not.
"Earned' income is taxed at a higher rate than "Capital Gains."
How many favored classes do we have in this country?
All of you are asking the wrong questions!
Incentives, TY, are to encourage a certain behavior that an individual, corporation or business may not otherwise display.
Are you seriously suggesting that the oil companies would not explore for new fields without tax incentives?
Why not end all subsidies for every business including farming? Why should the tax payers pay for any of the so called "alternative energy sources"? If solar and wind, for example, are so good and is beneficial then private businesses should be pouring money into their development, not the government. There are billions wasted by the government that could be stopped if the administration and congress would just quit playing politics with every little thing. Just like to day President Obama has to call a photo op at the WH to mention the bill and removing subsidies from the oil companies, but no mention of any other businesses. Nothing but a political move by trying to blame the oil companies.
We need to completely revise our tax codes, instead of adding to them. Even now few people, if any, can even understand the damn codes. Call the IRS and ask a question and you can get several answers depending on who you talk to. Even Geitner, who is in charge of the IRS, admitted he doesn't understand it, and Congressman Rangel, who was chairman of the tax writing committee, says he can't understand the tax codes. So lets revise or rewrite the tax codes to get rid of all loopholes, subsidies, and waste. Let's get a code that most people can understand. Anyone remember "KISS", keep it simple stupid?
sfcret asked:
"Why should the tax payers pay for any of the so called "alternative energy sources"?"
It is ironic that you, as a retired military man, are ignoring or forgetting a very important part of our history. Try this perspective on for size. About three-quarters of a century ago, the United States government, unknown to more than 99% of the population, began subsidizing an alternative energy source. Indeed there was no private investment at all. Not one cent.
That investment gave us nuclear power, a benefit of U.S. investment in the creation of the most destructive weapon known to man - The Atomic Bomb. As a matter of fact, the bomb was created using a theory that didn't even exist at the turn of the 20th century. Even today, atomic theory is still called "atomic theory" because we are still learning how this invisible particle works.
Incredibly, we witness the indefensible subsidizing of a PROVEN TECHNOLOGY - oil extraction. Big Oil is off the ground and running and they now clearly have the ability to finance themselves. They no longer need taxpayers. Let them recover their costs in the price of their finished products. Let's see the true costs of petroleum products, not hide them by putting them on the backs of all taxpayers.
That is the reason gasoline should cost far more than it does. Big Oil MUST include all their costs of keeping us addicted to oil and that includes ALL externalities. Allowing oil to find its TRUE price will stimulate alternative energy creation and production.
That is how the FREE ENTERPRISE system works. Some times the new stuff needs a government kick because true venture capitalists are as rare as hen's teeth. Today's capitalists are extraction capitalists. The don't have the guts to invest and we certainly aren't making risk attractive when we artificially hold down oil prices.
Commercial nuclear power was an alternative energy source barely six decades ago. Why not find more alternatives? We are running out of cheap power.
Would someone please tell me how these "brilliant actions" will lead to lower gas prices in our country ? That's right ...... they won't. This is just political posturing by Obama as he moves to yet another division of class warfare .... trying to pit "big oil" versus U.S. citizens.
Furthermore, when will Obama get rid of the vagueness of "oil subsidies" and actually DETAIL what it is he wants to remove. Once before, when this same topic of discussion was in focus, there was some talk about eliminating costs incurred in exploration. That's not a "subsidy" Mr. President, it is a COST OF DOING BUSINESS and should logically be deducted against income.
Of course, when Obama cuts down their profits, he will also be cutting down the corporate federal income taxes that "flow" from big oil. Imagine that ... reduced revenues to Uncle Sam !
Jim...you are a perfect example of blasting EVERYTHING President Obama does!
When he does something that makes common sense, I will be sure to sream "HALLELUJAH" from the mountain tops just so you will be impressed.
You failed to answer my question though ...... Explain to me how raising the costs of producing gasoline will give U.S. consumers a lower "selling price" at the pump.
P.S. I thought his relief efforts to Haiti after the earthquake was good and appropriate .... sorry to burst your bubble.
Whether or not it lowers petrolium costs removing the subsedies is the right thing to do. If these companies were struggling I could understand giving them entitlements but they are not. They are making record profits. Money from those profits can be reinvested in drilling and buying equipment necessary for continuing to provide petrolium for America and the world.
Jim,
Big oil has had enough leeway and is VERY PROFITABLE. They don't need more breaks. To answer your question: There is no way this will lower the price of gas, if gas goes higher it will hurt Obama's campaign, what are you complaining about? I DO agree he needs to detail EXACTLY what he wants to remove though.
David,
You are talking 60 or more years ago. Things are a lot different now. Also the federal money for the nuclear power you are talking about was done for military purposes only and was done in secret. There is no comparison between the nuclear testing in the 40s and the government money being spent on solar, wind and other so called "alternative energy sources."
It appears you and the other democrats are more concerned about a political witch hunt against big oil than really being concerned about waste and fraud in the government as a whole. Read some of the GAO reports (I mention the one from Mar 2011) that identified billions in waste, fraud and overlapping programs but I have yet to see this Administration or Congress even show an interest in delving into these recommendations. We do not have the money to spend anymore, and the federal government needs to get it's own house in order.
Using taxpayer money to subsidize alternative energy sources, some that has been around for 20 or more years, is nothing but political pandering.
Let's just do away with all subsidies now or at least review the ones we currently have and revise the programs and quit throwing money around for the sake of political benefits.
I'm all for ending subsidies to oil companies just as long as we stop wasting the billions of taxpayer dollars that Obama already gives to his pet Green energy failures...er I mean projects. But I highly doubt the Progressives will go for that. Hypocrisy is the hallmark of the left.
It defies belief that someone could make a comment as stupid as this.
sfcret and zathrose, how can you justify subsidizing proven, existing industry (oil) while they make record profits and pay out record salaries and bonuses, while at the same time refusing to subsidize new, struggling industry?
I agree with you Jack, it's lunacy.
And it is stupid why? the oil companies "make" money and reinvest it. The "green" companies "take" money and let it blow away in their wind powered generator's fuel (wind). Yes I know, one letter makes a big difference.
It seems to me that if the oil companies have to pay more in taxes that they will just pass it on the the consumers in terms of higher fuel prices. The President has already stated that he has no control over fuel prices. Maybe fuel prices are already so low that raising them will not be a problem. Of course there are some in the President's administration that have wanted fossil fuel prices to rise so that "green energy" alternatives will become more economically viable. The problem that I have is that my car runs on regular gas only and I need my car to get to work. For me there is no alternative. No high speed rail is currently planned that I can use to get from my house to work and back again.
Fielden - Get your head out of your rear end. I never said I approve of subsidizing big oil, in fact I agree they should loose their government subsidies. I don't agree with the government giving subsidies to any of the energy companies or to large farmers. What part of my post did you not understand?
The only one's that appear stupid are those of you that think it's ok to spend tax payer money on programs that are only for political purposes only. Wind and solar have been around for a lot of years, and if they were financial beneficial private investment would be jumping to get into the market. The only companies wanting in the market are those that want tax payer money and if they fail, so what, it was taxpayer money not theirs.
I love all these "yeah stop giving our tax dollars to the oil companies". People, read. We don't give them anything. GovCo doesn't write them a check, the subsidies are in the form of tax breaks. It isn't us paying them. It is the government allowing tax breaks. It costs the government nothing (and therefore you and me) if they didn't have it in the first place.
Jack in Portsmouth & Fielden-
Thank you for proving my point.
Subsidizing industries deemed national security interests (farming, manufacturing, energy) makes sense on the surface, but aside from oil making record profits, oil is sold on the global market in which US oil companies don't compete against protectionism in other countries the way other industries do.
The president is correct that we would do much better providing tax incentives to companies that keep and create jobs here in the US.
As for tax cuts for corporations, the rate could be decreased but preferably only if tax credits are decreased first. Taxes imposed tend to be passed on to the consumer (just look at your cell phone bill, for example), so use the carrot instead of the stick, and use it for the betterment of the entire nation and economy.
Could Teapublicans in congress be intellectually honest about all this? That's the other question. Look at right-wing posts in this thread -- Dude, tax credits are also called tax expenditures because it is a loss in revenue! What we've seen so far is that the House in particular is not capable of reason let alone intellectual honesty. Throw the idiot Teabagger anarchists out!
Americans are paying much more for oil and gasoline than the market price would naturally be, based on current supply and demand.
Big Oil is the most profitable industry in the history of the world. It is an industry that does not need tax breaks or subsidies! Republicans voted to let Big Oil keep their subsidies because Big Oil bankrolls their election campaigns.
What do you think a tax break is? It amounts to a reduction in government tax revenue. The Big Oil subsidy results in a drop in tax revenue that has to be made up somewhere else...and as usual, that 'somewhere else' is the back of the American middle class taxpayer.
An understanding of basic economics is sadly lacking in this country.
The TeaPublicans will never let it happen. Give to the big oil companies, while they take from the middle class and working poor.
Providing health care.....NO
Providing subsidies to big oil......YES
Or they can vote to end these taxpayer subsidies so that we can invest in the future.
I want to know how anyone could track the savings. The government says there will be billions saved and the president wants to take that money and reinvest (spend) it. I guess the savings isn't enough to apply to the deficit, or the debt. More like pennies vs thousands of dollars.
When the president says reinvest the money, does he mean giving it to companies like Solyndria? And you liberals fall for it everytime. I have hand it to you... you are consistent. Consistently gullible.
I want to see the big picture. The President promised that the 2012 federal deficit will not exceed 229.27 billion dollars. I want to know how that is going to be accomplished. Even if what the President is asking for becomes law, it would have virtually no effect on this year's deficit.
Actually, they are not gullible, liberals are Hypocrits. See Fiesty's, Jack in Portsmouth, et. al. comments above. They are all against corporate welfare....except for the companies she and the rest of the left back.
You and I may have to crawl through the economic debris, but for the oil companies, it's training wheels forever.
I'm in favor of ending their subsidies. Should have been done a long time ago. However, why would you do that right now with gas approaching $5? Guess Obama is keeping one of his promises...to raise the price of gas so people can't afford it.
When did he make this promise? Date and speech will do, of course you will never find it, because he never said it. How many times do you dolts have to be told this before it adheres to a brain cell?
This is one sure way to achieve $5 a gallon and above gas prices. Thanks President Obama.....this will also put plenty of oil workers out of work also. This is a normal tax deduction for exploration and drilling expense. No quick way to decrease gas prices.........but it seems he found a ways to increase the price even more.
So, give them more and maybe prices will go down to 2.50$...?
Ahh, that's how Gingrich was going to make that work!
....or be like Obama and hinder growth and production of oil and gas. Sure fire way to keep gas prices and unemployment high.
You do know that the higher the price of gas goes, the more profits the oil companies make, the more they reinvest, the more oil industry workers are employed? Didn't think so...
the more workers the oil industry hires.......... Not to build the XL pipeline, not to dril off shore or on federal land, refineries are closing, gas prices increasing........these people are being hired in spite of Obama not any thing to do with his jobs policy on oil and other fossil fuels. The one you need to tell this to is Obama and his clueless DOE.
Mr.McConnell, when will it be the right time?
Certainly not NOW genius !
and gas will go up to make up for the loss.oil companies arent gonna take the loss, we the consumers are.
The billions in profits are just not enough for the oil companies or the republicans.
The repubicans are not happy unless they are taking the food out of the mouths of children like in the Ryan plan. We can't afford education or food for children, but we can sure afford tax cuts for the billion dollar oil companies. Worried about the 1% vote for a republican as they only worry about the 1% too.
VOTE FOR AMERICA....VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Voting for Obama is NOT voting for America. We want our country back, from commie in chief. Bye Bye Baracalypse! Jimmy Carter has a hammer with your name on it.
Poor Russ, your hate got in the way of the thinking part of your brain.
Making up lies about our President seems to be the republican way.
VOTE FOR TRUE FREEDOM.....VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Americans First - mucho primo koolaid slurper. Obama and freedom are antonyms. Complete opposites. He's done nothing but set up the chess board during his first term. If he wins a second term he won't have to campaign any more. He will spend all that extra time implementing his anti-constitutional agenda. Obama is completely offended that the Constitution limits his power. He has been finding ways around that limitation... Term 2 will trigger what he has put into place. America will never be the same again.
@#8.2,
Making up lies would be like the first sentence of your second paragraph in #8 above:
"The republicans are not happy unless they are taking the foood out of the mouths of children like in the Ryan plan".
Your hypocrisy is shown when you accuse russ of "not thinking".
Americans First,
If you really beleive that's true you need to pull your head out of your you-know-what.
Have you heard of the Patriot Act? The NDAA? HR347 makiing it a FEDERAL OFFENSE to protest on Federal land or near anyone with secret service protection?

It doesn't matter if you are a woman or not Obama has stripped you of more civil liberties than ALL OTHER PRESIDENTS COMBINED!
ON the subject of tax breaks for oil, yea they have had enough breaks.
Baracalypse running his stupid mouth again. While google, berkshire hathaway and apple all hide and hold cash without offering dividends, or paying any tax on the HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS HELD, divider in chief beats the drum of class warfare, AGAIN! What a clown. Keep talkin MSN about how baracalypse may be reelected. It will certainly derail the slight recovery we are having due to optimism of his demise. Greece needs another bailout. Yeah, whos gonna lend THEM money?
The liberals are the crabs in a bucket theory. All the crabs try and crawl their way out, and when one gets to the top, and almost out, the others grab his claws and try and pull themselves out too. This essentially brings em all back, into the bucket. Sound familiar?

VOTE FOR AMERICA......VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Occupy,
That's like saying "vote for dumb and dumber". Removing so-called "subsidies" (actually just a cost of doing business") at a time when gasoline prices are going through the roof is asinine.
No hate, just common sense ...... something libtards and leftards totally run away from.
Revolutions arent from the poor revolting. its from the wealthy, refusing to adhere to unjust taxation.
Do you libs really think you can force someone to produce, because someone told him he has to?
Keep dreaming.

VOTE FOR AMERICA.....VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Let's see ..... Obama's religious mentor said "God damn America" ..... and Obama kept going to listen to him ?
Michele said "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country" I think that is a little closer to home than the "religious mentor"? Then again...maybe not?
To quote Baracalypse
subsidies that keep us trapped in the past. Or they can vote to end these taxpayer subsidies so that we can invest in the future. It’s that simple.”
What does those exact words mean? Invest in what future? Whos future? Future of what? Invest what?
Where is lowering the rediculous spending addressed in his rediculously stupid statements?
Russ doesn't even understand that our country should have a future that should not include giving billions to the richest companies in America when America should not be adding to the deficit.
So the republican plan is not to raise taxes, not to close any expensive loopholes, just take food from the mouths of the poor. The poor have no lobbyist in Washington and it shows.
VOTE FOR THE RIGHT TO FOOD BEFORE TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH.
VOTE FOR AMERICA.
VOTE......OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Would it be in the fact that the continued subsidies to the oil industry NEVER lowered the price of gas?
And, would it be in the fact that eliminating these subsidies WOULD REDUCE spending?
Just asking.
Your retorts fall flat and dont answer any of my legitimate points. Hater! ha! Look at the angry hating lib posts! Your petulant frenzy is laughable. I am just here to post the truth to people, not this rediculous agenda against freedom.
Im not here for you or the braindead liberals. Only here to point out the things omission news refuses.
Apple has billions of undistributed funds. Go get them.
google 600 plus billion, for what?
This president is going for the saul alinsky communist manual. read it sometime folks.
Americans last, Typical liberal thinking that the government not taking something is the same as giving something like the government really cuts a check to the oil industry. Hey, the government didn't take my house so they must have given it to me. Wow. I love me some government. What else can they not take from me so they can say they gave it to me?
I think the President was trying to make a rebuttal point to the Republicans that- it is a fact that the US tax payers are subsidizing the oil companies on one hand while gasoline prices are going up. Hmmm, wait for it. The question is do the oil companies continue to need a tax subsidy while making record profits. That is a hard sell. I think there are bad unintended consequences for reducing any subsidy right now, but when the health of the US economy does ride on the price of gasoline there should be serious actions to at least regulate oil speculation.
The so-called "oil subsidies" are for allowing a DEDUCTION AGAINST INCOME for exploration and drilling costs ..... basically a cost of doing business deliberately distorted by Obama for political purposes.
Libtards are falling for his rhetoric.
If oil companys are people and its apparently ok for the government to force people to buy insurance. How come the government dosn't just force the oil companys to drop their prices? Sounds reasonable to me, if im getting forced to buy car and eventually health insurance these oil tools should be forced to drop their prices oil speculation be damned.
The republicans are fighting in court to keep the speculators from being regulated.
At the least the speculators should pay the same tax rate as the rest of us. But the republicans now call them job creators and want to protect them from any tax increases at all, especially those increases that might put Americans back to work.
If you have not figured it out by now, the republicans are not on the side of the people.

Great video. I suggest you facebook it
REPUBLICANS can fix things? You gotta be kidding! Eight years of Republicans "fixing things" was enough, thank you. It'll take years and years to get out of the hole Republicans put the USA and world in!
Obama has fixed nothing. All he has done is run up the National Debt at an accelerated pace, failing to ever give Congress a realistic budget proposal along the way ..... all the while seeking to divide U.S. citizens hoping it will lead to his re-election.
President Obama hasn't fixed anything? What President ran up the debt prior to President Obama? Who is trying to divide U.S. citizens? Jim, I really feel sorry for you.
and of course,
GOPJOBS.GOV. Harry reid refuses any budget, because like baracalypse, destroying America financially is job one! They should both be tried for treason.
These are all facts libs hate. see, whos the real hater?
If the next President Pardons this fool they should be kicked out of office immediately.
The first leg of Obama's "green energy" plan is to try and force all others out of the market. He has made that clear from day one. His rhetoric about an all of the above strategy is just an outright lie. Presently, he has the EPA trying to destroy coal energy and all the jobs that go with it.
Great post ! The only "subsidizing" that needs to end is massive $535 million loans to "green companies" like Solyndra that had received a "going-concern" kiss of death letter from their indepoendent CPA's. Obama and the White House pushed for the massive giveaway in spite of evidence of this company's ability to stay in business.
That's what happens when the media and their puppets vote in a child that wants to play president.
A hundred years ago the subsidies were enacted to help the struggling petroleum industry find petroleum for the new automobile business. Now, with the highest profits of any business in world history, they are still being given money out of the people's treasury. Is political corruption any more obvious? It would have been time to end the program by at least 1946. Does everything important take Congress 100 years to act? Health care reform did. The Supreme Court took only a few days to give us a minority president, overthrow 100 years of anti-corruption laws and turn massive businesses into people (not having been done before by anyone but God and some clay), and perhaps reintroduce health care crisis and chaos, over the will of Congress and the Presidency.
Perhaps the Supreme Court should do all the rest of America's legislation from the bench. House Republicans can then devote full time to harassing women, infringing on rights, being antisocial, and milking Wall Street.

Do we exert our own liberties without injury to others - we exert them justly; do we exert them at the expense of others - unjustly. And, in thus doing, we step from the sure platform of liberty upon the uncertain threshold of tyranny.

Personal attacks should never be used in a discussion becuase the person is not being discussd its the merit of thier ideas. The policies are at issue not the people. I have found that the tone of these discussions become more strident when we stray from the ideas to the people. We become certain that the person expressing an idea we disagree with is not merely incorrect but evil. We make the people that have a dissenting person not merely misinformed but activist out to destroy the country, our lives, our freedom. This is not correct.
Somewhere along the line it seems we forget that we are all Americans, whether Republican or Democrat, Liberterian or Progressive, Black or White, Veteran or Civilian, Christian or not. Our disagreements as Americans are mostly about the best way forward and we must realize that no one group is infallible or has the only right way to achieve that goal.
A gentleman will not insult me, and no man not a gentleman can insult me.

Here Obama goes again. Trying to blame someone else for his failures. Obama creates a "bad guy" and wants to take away tax deductions that every other industry gets. Obama says he wants to "invest in the future"....translation is "spend and waste more money". Raising taxes will raise the gas prices even further.
If Obama is reelected for another term, this country will resemble Greece with rioting in the streets. God help us.
Low cost energy in all any form would drastically improve the economy. This is not the presidents goal. Why?
