More 2012: Voter registration down in FL

McCain and former Sen. Feingold want campaign finance back in the spotlight.

The Hill: “Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) predicted there would be ‘major scandals’ as a result of the rise of super-PACs thanks to the Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court.”

FLORIDA: The New York Times: “Florida, which is expected to be a vital swing state once again in this year’s presidential election, is enrolling fewer new voters than it did four years ago as prominent civic organizations have suspended registration drives because of what they describe as onerous restrictions imposed last year by Republican state officials.”

MASSACHUSETTS: “In a surprising move, US Senator Scott Brown has transferred out of the Massachusetts Army National Guard to a unit in Maryland, allowing him to work in a major position at the National Guard’s Pentagon office,” the Boston Globe reports.

Read the link article from NYT about Florida's voter registration law above...

Glad to see the League of Women Voters, one of the oldest non partisans groups, are part of the lawsuit filed against the State of Florida over this restrictive law.

In the meantime both the League and Rock the Vote have suspended voter registration drives in the state.

This is so sad and a big step backwards for all voters.

Northstar,

Here in Florida, the second the legislature voted for the new restrictive voting laws, the League of Women Voters were, um, to put it in a nice way, VERY TICKED OFF! And seeing those little, kindly old ladies pee'd is NOT a pretty sight!

phine,

Keep the focus on these restrictive laws passed by the GOP/tea party elected officials. Every state legislator will be up for election in November, and all voters need to be aware.

Glad Floridans are paying attention.

And I hope your law is struck down.

I think the Republicans don't realize these laws will suppress Republican voting at least as much as Democratic voting. My experience talking to voters, while collecting signatures to repeal Maine's ban on same day registration, showed this is a bipartisan issue. Republicans, especially lower income Republicans, are just as apt to put off registering till election day, just as apt to forget to change their registration when they move, and to be intimidated by the whole process of registering, to the point they "forget" to vote.

Maine voters overturned the legislature's ban on same day registration by 60% in 2010.

Northstar,

Even a former REPUBLICAN secretary of state of Florida says the new law is just a redo of the old Jim Crowe laws. Wish I could find the link of his editorial to newspapers throughout the state. You would have loved it!

But they will get away with all these laws restricting voting because now we have a Supreme Court that will uphold anything the conservatives want to do.

When the League of Women Voters back off you know the stench is really, really bad.

Good article in the NY Times.

Gee. In my state we have mail in ballots. For years. Hmmmm......wonder why we haven't been targeted "to prevent fraud."

    Got that right, Heartlight.

The earlier posts do give me hope. Thank you all. At least I know some else is paying attention. What scares me is that by the time legally contesting these voter suppression laws, the election will be over. Seems obvious to me it was planned this way.

What the Republicans are attempting to do to this country and its citizens is a dark chapter in the history of America. I hope they pay dearly for it in November.

I agree this is a dark chapter what they have done. But how are they going "to pay dearly" if the disenfranchised can't vote them out? That is what has been so chilling.

And here we go again with a stacked SCOTUS to rule on election validity.

Florida should use social media such as FB and Twitter to drive voter registration.
