Gingrich axes third of staff, cuts travel

Newt Gingrich's bid for the White House seems to have hit a rough patch, financially speaking. The 2012 candidate and former house speaker is laying off roughly a third of his campaign staff, is replacing his campaign manager and cutting back on travel. The Morning Joe panel discusses.

WASHINGTON, DC — Newt Gingrich's campaign is laying off a third of its paid staff, replacing its campaign manager, and lightening the campaign schedule as he continues with poor finishes in elections and is receiving little incoming money for his campaign.

“The campaign is being redesigned to focus on Tampa,” campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond told NBC News.

News of the cutbacks were first reported by Politico Tuesday evening.

Michael Krull, an Iowan and college friend of Gingrich’s wife, Callista, who took over as campaign manager shortly after most of Gingrich’s original staff ditched him last summer, agreed to resign his position last weekend. Now, Vince Haley, the current deputy campaign manager and policy director, will assume the role.

Hammond refused to comment on what other staff were let go, saying “he will not discuss personnel matters.”

Gingrich’s campaign has been struggling to stay afloat financially for several weeks — posting slightly more debt than cash on hand in the last FEC filing for February. The former House Speaker, though, continues to promise he will go all the way to the Republican convention in Tampa this August unless another candidate obtains all 1,144 delegates beforehand.

Asked earlier today while campaigning in Maryland if he realistically has enough money to last him until the summer, Gingrich said he does.

“The money is very tight obviously,” he told reporters outside the state house.

The speaker even alluded to this apparent staff shake up, as well.

When asked by reporter in Annapolis this morning if he was asking his staff to take pay cuts, Gingrich said: “Well we're working through what it is going to take to get there [to the convention] and I think probably Joe DeSantis or R.C. will have something to say about that in the next day or two.”

Gingrich typically holds anywhere from three to five public campaign events a day but on Wednesday, Gingrich only has one public event scheduled in Washington, D.C. This trend will continue for the campaign as they begin to lighten the number of events.

Communications director Joe DeSantis tells NBC News as far as cutting back travel, “You will see Newt spend longer stretches of time in key states rather than bouncing from state to state.”

The speaker was originally scheduled to spend Wednesday in North Carolina but then cancelled the trip just yesterday.

These shakeups will undoubtedly increase speculation and calls for Gingrich to exit the GOP race. He has only won two states — his home state of Georgia and South Carolina — and is trailing both Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum in the delegate count.

Give it up, Newt. You aren't going anywhere. Take helmet head home and slip into retirement.

Unfortunately for Mr. Obama.....his "Starlight ObamaCare" is going down in flames and taking him with it.

Maybe he could retire in California and help straighten out that State. Nah, nobody can do that since they break their own laws. Wait a minute....that could be right up Mr. Obama's alley. He could even have Mrs. Pelosi as his personal Secretary.

Yep, this Democrat will NOT BE VOTING for Mr. Obama to complete his "transformation of America".

If Gingrich had suspended his campaign, he still would have been a strong voice. Every day he stays in, the less voice he is going to have.

Satanick that is the trap nearly every person who thinks they intelligent falls into. They become arrogant, rude, call names, and are condescending to others.

Note: I see Santorum resisting this to a much better degree, Romney also.

It is time for Gingrich to drop out. He has little if any support as demonstrated by both the primary results to date and his inability to raise money for his campaign. The only negative I see in Gingrich dropping out is that it would likely strengthen the Santorum campaign. There is no way I want to see that fundamentalist nutcase get the nomination. The best chance we have of avoiding the disaster that would be another Obama term is Romney getting the nomination. He is the only one in the current Republican field that has a chance at beating Obama. If Santorum were to somehow get the nomination it would basically hand the general election to Obama. There is no way the Santorum could beat Obama, there are just not enough extreme right wing nuts out there. I fear what will happen to this country if Obama is reelected and has four years to do what he wants without having to worry about another election. It will be a compete disaster for this country if that happens. I hope that Romney can sew up the nomination fairly quickly so that the focus can shift to beating Obama. Romney is being forced too much to pander to the right wing element in the Republican party in order to get the nomination and that is hurting his chances at beating Obama in November. Romney is basically a moderate and the sooner he can get back to those roots and start campaigning as one against Obama the better the chance of beating Obama in the general election.

I think to save money he knows the migrant workers a free about this time of year that he can use on his staff to save money. Newt wants to blast a lot of folks in the party at the convention and has some agenda items he wants to bring out there as well so he can promote them to make money on the rest of his life so I think he will hang around and try to do that.

    Folks,

Ask yourself, what does Newt want? He's not stupid and no more self-delusional than the next power-hungry politician, so why does he stay in the race?

I'll bet the RNC knows what he wants and refuses to give it to him so he's thumbing his nose at them and practically insuring that Romney is the nominee, which will guarantee the President's re-election!

What does Newt want? Inquiring minds want to know.

Seriously, no more bad jokes, what does he want?

Oh, and 96ws6, I think "moon-unit" wants to colonize the moon using private funds so that Calista can be Queen of the Moon. He's going to declare the moon is HIS and charge us all to visit him and his moon Queen. I just hope he takes Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern with him.

He's only still in this race so he and Callista can both use campaign funds to peddle their books. As soon as he is finished speaking at an event both of them run out to a table to sell and sign books. At Callista's "campaign" stops, which just happen to be mostly at elementary schools, (they have to get that young vote you know) a staff member has to dress up as the elephant character in her childrens book. Everyone knew he was in this race to sell books. Why would he get out as long as he has any money left for his book tour?

Even now President Obama beats the best Republican by double digits. Wait and see how the numbers go up after the first debate. Republicans have relied on misinformation and lies, via a sham news network, to spread their sinister policies.

I cannot wait to hear their Republican nominee debating evolution or climate change with the smartest man in the room. It will be a popcorn and candy event for sure.

None of you can stand the fact that he has been right all along and that the country is finally starting to rebound from the utter disaster of George Bush. It is INSANE to think that we should turn the reins of power back over to the incompetent lunatics that caused our near collapse in the first place.

PS..if you want to accuse someone of acting unconstitutionally and stripping away our freedom look no further than Bush. The unPatriot Act, warrantless wiretaps, domestic eavesdropping, etc. etc. That man should be in jail with Cheney as his cell mate.

I pray to God Almighty to save this country and all of our freedoms from the theocrats of the right wing. May we see a sweeping democratic victory across the whole country.

So either it's arrogance or he's hoping to secure a silencing fee or position within the winning Republican nominee's administration.

At a point in the Campaign the frontrunner automatically gets Secret Service protection. The others can request it, and usually do when crazies seem to be moving in. Santorum requested them after the Occupy Wallstreet protestors showed up. I don't blame him, one kid went home one day and killed his parents after several weeks of indoctrination of cops and authority being the enemy.

The primary is over, Romney won. No one else has any shot. He has won over half the delegates that have been up for grabs so far, and will get at least half of what's left, if not more, having winner take all states that favor him coming up (California, New Jersey, Utah). Therefore, he gets to 50% and wins.

Santorum's last remote chance was Illinois, and he lost. Mooooooving on.

--of course, if Mitt loses in November, we will kick the teeth out of any establishment Repub who said, in this perfect rightwing year, that we had to go moderate to win--

Romney will win it all by California, June 5th, if not before. With California's 172 winner take all, that'll put him at at least 1190. After California, he has some backup emergency states, just in case, which he won't need, like New Jersey and Utah, both winner take all where he will get all the delegates.

          California is WTAD/WTAS.

The only True Winner Take All states remaining are DC, (Romney will win - Santorum is not on the Ballot) Indiana - Santorum is expected to win, New Jersey Romney up 10 Points, and Utah - Romney by bunches.

If the Polls hold where they are right now Romney will have 920 - 1100 - and that is with all the unpledged falling his way. 1144 are needed to Clinch

Don't talk down to people, like you are the smartest person in the room. Most people can see through that.

Gingrich needs to get a clue. He was indicted on 84 ethical charges as Speaker, (although only formally charged for one) and that is the first time in history that has ever happened. He also broke an oath to GOD when his wives got sick with cancer and MS (forsaking all others.... through sickness and health... remember those words Newt??)... and we're supposed to think he can HONOR an OATH TO OFFICE? His ego got him through Congress but that is exactly what will never make him President of the United States. Thank God.

He needs to look up the word "integrity" because he obviously has no clue what that is. I hope he backs out, I don't care how many straw polls he has won. His fall from grace happened already and he has zero business anywhere near the White House.

Well, he has a lot more integrity than our community organizer president organizing back door deals with the Russians regarding our nuclear deterrent force. ... "Tell Vladimir to wait until after the election" for what? To sell the USA under to the Russians and meet their every demand? Yeah right. This douchebag president is a traitor with ulterior motives. He's George Soros' puppet. Google the evil about George Soros sometime. May God continue to bless the USA, we're going to need divine intervention with this un-president at the helm.

75K capitalist, are you refered to by some job you held years ago? The last non elected job Mr. Obama had was a US Constitutional Law Professor at the University of Chicago. BTW that's the same position that Antonin Scalia had before Reagan appointed him to be a judge.

That's why he's been able to one handedly dismantle it (the constitution), one piece at a time (in cahoots with and puppet for George Soros). I never said he was stupid, quite the contrary. If he doesn't like what congress does, he issues an executive order or some other backwards way around his dilemna. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "refered to by some job" but I wasn't referred by anyone or anything. I'm simply speaking out about the attrocities commited by the executive branch these days, and trying to awaken the public to what is transpiring to them before their very eyes. Wake up people!

He is not a traitor but he is a coward. It too makes me sick that Obama did that, and I'll level with you, I voted for the guy in 2008. I have been nothing but disappointed. So since then I have paid a lot more attention to things. You'll disagree, but I'd pick Obama over Gingrich every day. Do I like either at this point? No. However I do also understand that by picking the lesser of the two evils I have still chosen evil.

I think the whole "traitor" thing might be coming from the whole NDAA mess where it can be said the president is guilty of treason because essentially it repeals the 4th Amendment. I 100% absolutely agree and I am done with Obama. There's a difference between making irrelevant laws (you can look up silly laws states carry) and repealing the constitution. The latter is unacceptable.

Gingrich has a record that makes a train wreck look minor. At this point his belief that he has any hope to be president is purely egotistical and wrong. He will never see his name plate in the oval office. Thankfully. I don't want to substitute one liar with another is what I'm saying.

75KCapitalist-75K doesn't make a capitalist-it makes you a medium salaryman. What up with all the bull$hit you lefties preach about Republicans only liking the rich? careful-Romney is a shape shifter. A flip flopper that will change his position by the hour depending on the audience he is speaking to. Not to be trusted.

Of course-the whole Republican field was not to be trusted. Huntsman was the best of the bunch.

Rasmussen changed their formula recently. There numbers appear to have moved away from the results instead of closer to the results. PPP apears to have done so too (expected). The last 2 races they had Romney 2 points too high and Santorum 6-7 points too low.
