Poll: Majority of GOP says Gingrich, Paul should end campaigns

A majority of Republicans said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul should end their presidential campaigns, according to new survey data released Tuesday.

Sixty percent of Republicans said that it's time for Gingrich to leave the race, according to a new CNN/ORC International poll. Sixty-one percent said the same for Paul.

Gingrich has struggled to win any caucuses or primaries beyond the Jan. 21 South Carolina primary and the Super Tuesday primary in Georgia, the state where he was elected as a representative to Congress. He's vowed, though, to fight on with his campaign through the August Republican convention, though the former speaker acknowledged Tuesday that his campaign's finances were tight.

Paul, despite a vaunted fundraising operation and an enthusiastic corps of volunteers, hasn't scored a single victory and has faded from the campaign trail.

By contrast, a majority of Republicans -- 59 percent -- said that Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator who's emerged as the chief conservative alternative to frontrunner Mitt Romney this primary cycle, should stay in the race.

The poll, conducted March 24-25, has a 4.5 percent margin of error for the subsample of Republicans.

I say let them all stay in as long as they like. I'm having lots of fun watching them come up with all the reasons they can think of for folks to vote Democratic.

I hope for a brokered convention.

I'll be having 4 flavors of popcorn while I watch....

Popcorn, you think it tastes good, it looks good on the surface, it fills you up for a short time, but if you have too much of it, it will make you sick and it has no real value below the surface... kind of like the GOP - all flash, fill, and appearances, no real substance and you get sick from it real fast.

Mitt Romney’s cars will have their own elevator in California home

By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow – 6 hrs ago

Mitt Romney wants to use his past success in the private sector to help drive the nation's economy forward. But Romney's personal fleet of vehicles will move at a luxurious descent from the comfort of their own private elevator in Romney's new California home.

Politico reports that Romney's proposed renovations for his California beachfront property, located in the La Jolla community of San Diego, include a car lift for his four on-site cars and 3,600 square feet of underground living space. He's even spent more than $20,000 on a lobbyist to help expedite the approval process through the city government.

The U.S. Secret Service asked Politico to withhold from publishing the specific, proposed designs for the new property out of respect for the personal safety of Romney and his family. "For operational security, we'd request that you not publish the blueprints," Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told the paper.

Yahoo!'s own car blogger Justin Hyde provides some additional details on Romney's personal fleet of vehicles, along with some helpful suggestions on the best kinds of car lifts. Hyde notes that the PhantomPark car lift is listed at an estimated $60,000.

Though unusual, Romney's proposed car elevator is not unique. A company called American Custom Lifts provides home car elevator construction services, though they do not publicly list their prices. And while the Romney's proposed car elevator will undoubtedly be cutting edge, the concept itself is not groundbreaking. A large-scale car elevator was being used in Chicago as far back as 1936, according to the website Chicagoist.

In this simulated video, you can see designs for an even more luxurious car lift used in an 11th Avenue high-rise in New York:

News of Romney's expensive renovation plans is sure to stoke criticism of his personal wealth. Romney has gotten into trouble several times on the campaign trail for inartful statements regarding his personal fortune and the financial struggles of other Americans.

In January, Romney was the focus of a wave of media and political criticism for saying, "I'm not concerned about the very poor." The full context of the quote was far less abrasive but hasn't stopped Romney's political opponents from using it against him. And Romney didn't do himself any favors either when he announced that he pays only about 15 percent in taxes each year, despite having an estimated $250 million personal fortune.

In addition to the California beachfront home, the Romneys also own a condominium in Massachusetts and a New Hampshire lake house.

I say let them campaign as long as they want, too, Wayne. Interesting, goes to show they poll everything these days even whether or not candidates should stay in the race or quit.

Why should Republicans let their voters have a choice? Why are Republicans trying to shove Mitt Romney down the throats of Republican Voters?

Seems like Republicans are (again) doing away with the American People's freedoms!

like to hear about President Obama: Kenyan, anti-colonial, radical, food stamp President, etc.......

Food stamps climbed to an average of 153,000 a month under Bush with the recession.

Under Obama's recovery, food stamps have averaged 403,000 a month!

During the recession, 9.3% of Americans were on food stamps.

Now, almost hree years later after the recession ended, 14.8% of Americans are on food stamps.

Last December, 46.5 million Americans were on food stamps.

You don't think that qualifies Obama as the Food Stamp President?

This may be a silly thought. How about letting the GOP voters and the candidates decide who stays in the race or goes? After all, it is their party.

bob. Where are all the jobs that the "job creators" were going to create if we kept taxes low ? Taxes have been at record low levels for 10 years, yet unemployment and underemployment are so high.

Yes, under the technical definition, the recession has ended. However, with unemployment still very high, most economists and anyone who is unemployed would state that the recession is still very much in place.

I would rather have people on food stamps than starving. I know the GOP wants to cut these programs, but I think we are a better country than that. We still are the greatest nation in the history of the world. If we do not care for the poorest in our nation, particularly at the cost of further enriching the wealthiest, we do not deserve to be the envy of the world.

IMO: the various endorsements coming Romney's way now are the GOP establishment's method of informing Santorum and Gingrich that there is no way that they will ever be the party's nominee even if Romney does not walk into Tampa with the 1144 delegates he needs.

A brokered Republican convention might be fun for Democrats, but it would further damage the GOP.

Who did the poll? According to the number of supporters that Ron Paul has who are contributing their own money to move this man forward, I think that poll is skewed and totally inaccurate. Other polls show that a small percentage of those who responded think that Paul should stop running and there is little doubt in my mind that some of those might be frightened democrats. Ron Paul is getting the new generation of voters and taxpayers on his side. They can see the handwriting on the wall and they are responding to it.

I have contributed to his campain and even if the media does not want to mention his name (so that this way it won't pop up as a tag) by referring to him as the "underfunded cadidate who is doing better than Romney", Dr. Ron Paul (that is with an MD) is going to be the best president for health care and as a Viet Nam vet the best candidate for ending the war.

All thinking people should dislike Romney.

First he vowed to uphold a woman's right to choose and now he vows with a signed pledge to overturn Roe v Wade. That is no small swing in your values.

With all the laws the republicans in control of the states have passed to control women's rights. I think republicans are really, really scary to women's freedom.

I find it interesting that making sure everyone having health care and each person having to be responsible to pay for their own is taking away from your freedom per the republicans but mandating women to have and pay for unnecessary medical proceedures is freedom? And that controlling a womens reproductive system is also freedom?

Add to that the freedom that republicans are fighting for is your gun freedom to stalk and kill unarmed innocent children that weights 100 lbs less than you and you can then claim self defense and leave with your gun. Brought to you from the right to life party. Oh, I forgot, no protection for the living only the unborn.

Yea because the media is throwing up "projections" on delegates. Ron Paul is going to be in second place. Santorum wont be anywhere close, neither will gingrich. Fox news did a check up on it (even though they still show projected guess numbers) and found that the majority of the unbound delegates are supporting ron paul. Yet they are giving those to santorum and romney in the projected numbers. Id bet anyone here that when we get to the convention these numbers are going to change alot. Ron Paul will be second, we will go to a brokered convention, Santorum and Gingrich will get the least votes and have to drop. It will be a battle between romney and paul. ron pauls supporters from romneys delegates will come to paul and it will get very close. you democrats need to calm down. how about being an american and just support someone who believes in freedom. The other 3 republicans are a joke. Ron Paul is the only one democrats agree with. Get on board.

Democrats DO NOT agree with Ron Paul. His cockamaimie, weird, unworkable ideas won't fly except for a small group of loyal followers. Paul is in 4th place now and will be in the same place if it goes all the way to the convention and noone drops out. If either Santorum or Gingrich drop out that will move Paul to 3rd place and if the other drops out than, by default, Ron Paul will be 2nd place. He'll go to the convention, give his little speech and then they will roughly ignore him, as they should.

Yes, Reagan was old as dirt but his ideas, as goofy as they were, made far more sense than the old doc. does.

              Carpenter,

First of all your 5% number is totally off base. Your delegat problem is you don't know how the process works. The rules are different for each state. Many caucus states like Iowa for example have a "straw poll" This is where people vote for their candidate in Iowa after the GOP was caught cheating Santorum ultimatley won the "straw pole" but in iowa after the straw pole (that means absolutly NOTHING) the party holds election for delegates. The delegates that are elected DO NOT have to vote for Santorum they can vote for whoever they choose. So Santorum won the "beauty contest" but all the delegates could vote for ROmney anyhow as an example. The fact that the media published numbers that are guesses helps confuse everyone. Basically this is shoddy reporting at best and could actually be called out as a lie. That is why you look at 5 sources and get 5 different delegate counts. (if you read the fine print most say they came up with the numbers by some BS calculation they pulled out of their butt) Many delegates are not bound so no one knows the true number yet. The Ron Paul campaign is smart enough to encourage supporters to run for delegate seats and they have won MANY.

There are 278 unbound delegates that can vote for whoever they choose. the Paul campaign is very organized and believes their supporters won 165 of those delegate seats.

I think this estimate is high in Paul's favor but MUCH more accurate than anything the BS media calcualtions are coming up with and once they are bound you will probably find this to be the closest to the truth.

Santorum and Gingrich are too full of themselves and enjoy making Romney's life miserable. Paul is the one who has failed miserably, yet no one calls him out. It's not going to make any difference which one wins the nomination, they are going to lose to Barack Obama, the president.

Romney - The liberals' favorite GOP Candidate. Don't vote for Romney.
Please tell all your friends to vote, we need a big turnout. These are a few reasons why Romney is considered liberal:
              1) Romney created RomneyCare which ObamaCare is based on. Kennedy
helped develop RomneyCare. Romney said he would repeal ObamaCare. Why
would he if he supports RomneyCare, he is not telling the truth.
              2) Most decisions Romney made as Govenor was liberal, not
conservative. So, what make you think he will be conservative all of a
              sudden?
              3) Romney lost to McCain by a landslide last GOP Primary, and McCain
lost to Obama by a landslide. So, how is Romney going to win this
              time?
              4) When Obama wishes Romney well in the election and name calls and
              villianizes the other candidates, beware!
              5) Have you noticed the mass press and critics have shredded apart
every GOP candidate except Romney? That is because they know Romney
              fits their agenda.
Please, if you love the USA, vote for any GOP but Romney.

I'll wager Paul takes it in Tampa. Give me 3 to 1 odds. His ground game is too strong. Those hard core supporters of his ARE not only winning delegates but also winning executive board positions in their county republican conventions AND working side by side with Romney supporters sharing those seats. Both camps combined at the county and district level want to take over their state Republican party and they will! As soon as the first wave of state conventions finish up in May and June, you'll see the shift. I have a hunch Ron Paul is going to get the national delegates in Tampa WHEN it does indeed go brokered. Watch

                  scott Cameron,

I'll wager Paul takes it in Tampa.

Yeah, your right, Paul will take a back room deal to shut his mouth and get out of the way. If he gets enough delegates to "take" Tampa, it will mean a landslide victory for President Obama in November.
