Boehner chides Romney for criticizing Obama while abroad

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) took a slight dig Tuesday at Mitt Romney for criticizing President Obama while the president was out of the country.

Boehner suggested it was inappropriate for Romney, the front-running GOP presidential contender, to take aim at Obama's exchange with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, when Obama signaled to his outgoing Russian counterpart after a meeting in South Korea that he would have more "flexibility" to negotiate on missile defense after this fall's elections.

"Clearly while the president is overseas, he's at a conference and while the president is overseas I think it's appropriate that people not be critical of him or our country," Boehner said in response to a question from NBC News about whether he agreed with Romney's assessment that Russia is the "number one geopolitical foe" of the United States.

Romney was quick to seize Monday on Obama's comments to Medvedev.

“Russia is not a friendly character on the world stage, and for this president to be looking for greater flexibility, where he doesn't have to answer to the American people in his relations with Russia is very, very troubling, very alarming," the former Massachusetts governor said. "I'm very, very concerned."

GOP aides told NBC News that Boehner has long adhered to the principle that criticism of the president stops at the border’s edge while he’s abroad.

The speaker's office did flag a tweet for reporters on Monday, though, in which Boehner said he looked forward to hearing what Obama meant by the "flexibility" comment upon his return to the U.S.

In March of 2011, Boehner waited until Obama returned from Brazil before sending him a letter that was critical of his foreign policy in Libya.

The president is supposed to negotiate with foreign governments. Negotiations imply some sort of flexibility. The president knows that he cannot pass anything in congress during the election season. This "issue" is a non starter.

Mr. Romney, you constantly change your mind whenever the wind shifts, whenever you have an itch on the end of your nose, whenever a fox commentator fields you yet another easy question, and whenever you tie your shoes. The president was doing what he is paid to do. There is no reason for your mock outrage here.

Mr. Boehner, that is the first thing that you've said in the last year and a half that actually impresses me. Maybe you do have a spine after all. Let's hear a little more of that, and please, hold the tears.

Now that's a pleasant surprise. Cheers to you, Speaker Boehner. It's about time someone reminded the GOP candidates and other republican legislators that it has always been an unwritten rule for politics to be left at the water's edge whenever any president, republican or democrat, is overseas. Based on Mitt Romney's clueless comments about Russia and doubling down on them, he has no business even talking about or criticizing President Obama regarding foreign affairs.

Wayne, cheers for that, too!

From Merriam Webster
3: characterized by a ready capability to adapt to new, different, or changing requirements <a flexible foreign policy> <a flexible schedule>

What the speaker did with that the question was express his consern without appearing to be a jackass. Asking what new or changing requirements Obama would be willing to concede appears, at face value at least, to be a perfectly legitamite concern. Just take the brief moment of civility, it won't last long.

Clearly while the president is overseas, he's at a conference and while the president is overseas I think it's appropriate that people not be critical of him or our country," Boehner said

so basically, as long as Obama in on the US soil, it's ok for Romney to edit videos to make Obama look like he said things he really didn't but when Obama is away, he's off limits?

If Obama chose to say something near a mic, that's something he has to live with but I think Boehner should address a bigger issue: the constant lying of Romney, Santorum, Gingrich, and Rove. I think Boehner should address that!

    The bigger issue should be:

What is Willard's stance when it comes to balancing the security interests of the US,

Russia, Europe and the Middle East?

Most voters have no clue on where Willard stands on issues like this.

    Does Willard have an answer?

Mitt Romney's cars will have their own elevator in California home

By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow – 6 hrs ago

Mitt Romney's beachfront California home (AP/Lenny Ignelzi)

Mitt Romney wants to use his past success in the private sector to help drive the nation's economy forward. But Romney's personal fleet of vehicles will move at a luxurious descent from the comfort of their own private elevator in Romney's new California home.

Politico reports that Romney's proposed renovations for his California beachfront property, located in the La Jolla community of San Diego, include a car lift for his four on-site cars and 3,600 square feet of underground living space. He's even spent more than $20,000 on a lobbyist to help expedite the approval process through the city government.

The U.S. Secret Service asked Politico to withhold from publishing the specific, proposed designs for the new property out of respect for the personal safety of Romney and his family. "For operational security, we'd request that you not publish the blueprints," Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told the paper.

Yahoo!'s own car blogger Justin Hyde provides some additional details on Romney's personal fleet of vehicles, along with some helpful suggestions on the best kinds of car lifts. Hyde notes that the PhantomPark car lift is listed at an estimated $60,000.

Though unusual, Romney's proposed car elevator is not unique. A company called American Custom Lifts provides home car elevator construction services, though they do not publicly list their prices. And while the Romney's proposed car elevator will undoubtedly be cutting edge, the concept itself is not groundbreaking. A large-scale car elevator was being used in Chicago as far back as 1936, according to the website Chicagoist.

In this simulated video, you can see designs for an even more luxurious car lift used in an 11th Avenue high-rise in New York:

News of Romney's expensive renovation plans is sure to stoke criticism of his personal wealth. Romney has gotten into trouble several times on the campaign trail for inartful statements regarding his personal fortune and the financial struggles of other Americans.

In January, Romney was the focus of a wave of media and political criticism for saying, "I'm not concerned about the very poor." The full context of the quote was far less abrasive but hasn't stopped Romney's political opponents from using it against him. And Romney didn't do himself any favors either when he announced that he pays only about 15 percent in taxes each year, despite having an estimated $250 million personal fortune.

In addition to the California beachfront home, the Romneys also own a condominium in Massachusetts and a New Hampshire lake house.

On another note, I watched the O'Donnell show last night and loved the way he grilled the reporter from the Orlando paper who wrote what the police wanted her to say. I still wish Zimmermans attorney would have shown for the program. While I find it odd that he even agreed to go on the program, he should have been there once he agreed to it. I would have enjoyed hearing his answers to the questions Lawrence asked of him.

Fiesty - I to believe the President chimed in on the death of Martin for political reasons only. I have not heard the President chime in or comment on the number of deaths in South Side Chicago over the past couple of weeks, or on the number of shooting throughout the U.S. I believe the President should have waited until all the facts were in and the grand jury and the special prosecutor had acted.

This shooting happened over a month ago, but just made national news in the past week or so. It shows how the power of the print and TV Media can influence a incident strictly for a so called "sensational story".

I always get very suspect when I see the likes of Jesse Jackson, Sharpton and other so called "civil rights leaders" jumping into a tragedy for their own personal gains. Where is their concern with all the gang bangers shooting up neighborhoods and killing innocent children and bystanders?

Yes, this shooting was a tragedy for those involved and it needs to be investigated and brought to a conclusion but through legal channels and not through the news media or demonstrations.

sfcret.....................I to believe the President chimed in on the death of Martin for political reasons only.

First of all, he was asked a direct question about the tragedy by a reporter. He responded in a very compassionate and eloquent manner (imho).

Second. I don't know where you live, but this has been natioanlly broadcast on TV, radio and print for much longer than the past week or so.

Third. You said: I always get very suspect when I see the likes of Jesse Jackson, Sharpton and other so called "civil rights leaders" jumping into a tragedy for their own personal gains. Where is their concern with all the gang bangers shooting up neighborhoods and killing innocent children and bystanders?

You may want to take a very close look at who you are and about your thought process. First of all, the people you mention are leaders for civil rights. Moreover, why would their combined concern about any subject make you suspect? You said that you believe that it is for their personal gain. Again, I ask that you exam your thought process. Why can't you see that they are trying to help a family who just tragically lost their son and that their concern may help prevent the loss of life for someone else in the future?

Lastly, you ask about where their concern is for innocent children/bystanders being killed by gang-bangers. Who says they aren't concerned? But they can't be everywhere and we have police and specific groups within those organizations that should be and normally will do everything in their power to fight all crime. The vast number of criminal activity simply exceeds the power of law enforcement on a daily basis to have an overwhelming influencing in preventative measures against criminals.

I do agree with your last sentence that this should be investigated and brought to a conclussion through the proper legal channels as quickly as possible.

      TO: sfcret who wrote:

"... I to believe the President chimed in on the death of Martin for political reasons only..."

So, in your mind, the President of the United States isn't genuinely concerned about a security guard shooting a 17 year old child to death in cold blood, the only concern here is "politics"? I would have expected Republicans to pull out the race card since the kid looks black, but I guess they've all found out the child is hispanic, not black.

As for the matter going through "legal channels" there is no better "legal channel" to "right a wrong" than through the President of the United States.

I think George H.W. Bush used the power of his office to right a wrong as well, I just can't remember at the moment what it was, but when the President of the United States steps in, problems get solved!

nomoresameo - Maybe in your mind Jackson and Sharpton are civil rights leaders, they are not in mine. Yes, I do get suspect when they get involved in something without any actual knowledge of what happened. Remember the Duke Lacrosse players and Sharpton and the Tawana Brawley incident? Both blown out of proportion without any facts (College students lives ruined and police officers vilified and falsely accused). Remember Jackson shaking down businesses for money for his so called foundations? Jackson and Sharpton have never done anything with some benefit to them. Further where is their public outrage over the gang violence and drug use? They are both shysters deserve no more consideration than anyone else. As for President Obama's response to a question, IMO a better response would have been "It is a tragic event and should be fully investigated and prosecuted if warranted."

American Girl - Your post just doesn't make sense. Where did you get the facts like "Security Guard, and the child being hispanic, not black". Get your facts right and get your head out of your rear end.

Republicans dont need to pander to the baby genociders, welfare recipients, illegals, college children or minorities. Personal rights and freedoms, and protection from govt abuse (redundant) as well as fiscal policies that are a proven success is why we need to take our govt back to the people.

When you offer freedom, you dont need to pander. When youre promising handouts, you are enslaving them, which is what lib policies do.

The people above should stop listening to their suppressors and demand their freedom.

You dont need to sell freedom. People in the rest of the world envy it. too bad its trying tgo be taken by commie and co.

I would suggest you look at the latest census figures of the make up of this country. BTW, I am curious, is the freedom you espouse for white men only? No women? No minorities? No one else?

That shirt you wear on your avatar really shows the "class" that the republican party is all about. Your party nearly sent us into the 2nd Great Depression, yet you believe their policies are a proven success? I'd love to ask any woman or minority how they feel about republicans sticking up for their personal rights and freedoms. Republicans will also prevent government abuse, apparently, as long as you don't have a uterus. Sometimes I wish I could understand how people believe this garbage, yet I'm very glad that I don't.

The inclusion of Obama's name on Russ's t-shirt is but weak attempt to deflect what Russ is.

Russ ... people in the rest of the world envy what you were and fear what you and your ilk are becoming.

Holy Batman! The Truth somehow finds a way of FALLING OUT OF A REPUBLICAN'S MOUTH. John Boehner defending the President against a STUPID Statement from the Candidates is the Right Thing to Do. As Bad as Bush was, no one dared to CRITICIZE him when he was abroad Representing this Country. The RNC and Mitch McConnell should have also Stepped up. This was probably a "Temporary Freeze of the Brain for him.

I have said this before, Because of the HATRED, which is bordering on Insanity by the the Republican Party, for President Obama, Republicans are DOING IRREPARABLE DAMAGE to the Office of the Presidency. A Republican will be in the Office again, and I wonder how they will like the fit?

Republicans like to say that Bush was talked about just as Bad - Let me compare some Apples and Oranges:

Bush's Parents were never called Monkeys, or Drawings by Democratic Committee Chairs sending them around as jokes. There were never derogatory remarks ever made about Laura Bush, like Fox and others make about Michele Obama.

A Federal Sitting Judge is willing to commit "Professional Suicide" to use racist remarks in a Joke about the President and his deceased Mother, his boss, and send it around to collegues.

Was Bush called a Nazi, Socialist, Food Stamp President, Mau Mau?

Presidential Candidates, as well Republican Leaders will not repudiate the Birthers on the President being a citizen of this Country. They ABDICATE their Leadership and say it is not up to them to correct it. Yet they want to be President of the People?

Bush Policies ALONG with a Republican Congress Tanking the Economy.

War of Arrogance and Choice Over 5 Thousand dead Americans and the total Destruction of Iraq and we have to rebuild it, Handing IRAN A GIFT of the Middle East, and now Republicans want to use it as a Hammer on President Obama - Blowing a Hole in the Deficit with 2 Wars and Tax Breaks for Millionaires.

Don't you think Bush and the Republicans should be called a few names?

All President Obama has done is kept the Country from sliding off an Economic Cliff, asking for Health Care for everyone and handing it over to the Republicans favorite people, Predatory Insurance Companies, and he happens to be Black and asking for Fairness in the Country so ordinary families can catch a break. Republicans would RATHER CHEW OFF A FOOT THAN TO WORK WITH HIM ON ANYTHING. Republicans' Number One Goal from his first day in office was to MAKE HIM A One-Term President. So not getting anything Done for the Country was OK with Republicans as long as they Could make the President look like a Failure. Wow, I really want to call the President a few names with that kind of attitude.

Well, it was refreshing to see Mr Boehner put Willard in his place. Willard knows nothing about foreign policy or proper decorum in dealing with heads of state. He should keep his flip flopping mouth shut about matters that don't concern him. Let him stick to criticizing Santorum and raising money, two things he excels in.

Boehner probably was in a bar toilet and found a magazine that had that statement in it. I am surprised his tears didn't mess up the article. Don't worry Boehner you won't have to be concerned about decorum come November.

you might have said that when Bush was Pres., the part where the world already knows what a bonehead he is, but not Obama, the world knows not to mess with him, we are now respected, unlike when Bush was Pres. and this country was looking rather grim, Bush couldn't do anything right.

I just found 50 comments of obama bashing bush when he was abroad when he was president.

But that is ok because in our country the media protects obama and he can do whatever he wants and the media and his supporters cheer him on.
