Santorum loses cool with press over Romney comment

FRANKSVILLE, Wis. -- What started as a good day for Rick Santorum took an abrupt turn on Sunday after the GOP presidential candidate grew frustrated with reporters asking him to clarify his remark that Mitt Romney is the worst Republican in the country to take on President Obama.

During his final campaign stop of the day here, Santorum said of Romney, “Pick any other Republican in the country, he is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama." The comments, Santorum would clarify, were in reference to the similarities between Romney's and the president on the issue of health care. It is a common critique he levels against his chief rival, but never has the former Pennsylvania senator called Romney the "worst Republican in the country" to go head-to-head with the president.

When pressed by reporters to clarify his statement, Santorum said, “On the issue of health care. That’s what I was talking about, and I was very clear about talking about that. OK? Come on guys, don’t do this. I mean you guys are incredible. I was talking about Obamacare, and he is the worst because he was the author of Romneycare.”

But the questions struck a chord with Santorum, and when he faced the same question again, he used a profane word and accused the media of "distorting" his speech.

The Washington Post's Dan Balz and MSNBC political analyst Karen Finney review presidential candidate Rick Santorum losing his cool following a Wisconsin speech.

However a press release sent out from the Santorum campaign shortly after the rally here seemed to double down on the candidate's comments. "Rick Santorum spoke plainly and clearly that of all the Republicans in the field, Mitt Romney is the worst possible candidate to take on Barack Obama, because Mitt Romney authored the blueprint for Obamacare and the issue of healthcare would be off the table," the release said.

Santorum has done a lot of clarifying lately, with recent comments suggesting Obama would be a better choice than Romney in a general election and saying the unemployment rate will not affect his campaign. In both cases, he accused the media and his opponents of taking his words out of context. But in both cases, the Romney campaign used his own words against him.

Sunday's remarks were no exception, with Romney spokesperson Ryan Williams telling reporters, “Rick Santorum is becoming more desperate and angry and unhinged every day...He’s panicking in the final stages of his campaign.”

Before his last event, Santorum had been all smiles on the trail the day after receiving nearly double the amount of support Romney did in the Louisiana primary.  Along with two rallies today, the GOP hopeful also fit in brunch at the Machine Shed and, for the second time in as many days, a few frames of bowling. In an earlier rally in Fond du Lac, WI, Santorum drew an overflow crowd.

But by Sunday's end, Romney advisers were using the hash tag "Tantorum" to draw attention to past instances of the former senator losing his cool. The response blasted out by the Santorum campaign no mention of his use of a not so family friendly word.

Santorum heads to Washington, DC where he will spend Monday before returning to the Badger State later in the week.

If this waste of human skin (Rick Santorum) becomes President of the United States, I will renounce my citizenship immediately and move to Europe or Australia.

Ricky InSanitarium simply is NOT a good candidate, even for the republiturd nomination!

If everyone pauses a minute or less, they'll know that ALL the republiturd nominees are incredibly bad for America! They are just what Barbara Bush says! And...that ain't a good thing.

BTW: The Obama/Biden juggernaut wins in 2012! No doubt!! We are waiting for the end of the Repub clown exhibit ...!

This guy is no better, just not quite as nuts as The Pope's boy.

There have been many rumors going around that little lyin Willardo was seen in a baby carriage in Tijuana. with a bottle of Corona Light in one hand and an Etch A Sketch in the other. The side of his carriage had the name Willardo on it. So when we see the long form of his birth certificate and it says Willardo on it and not Willard, we will know something is wrong.

Isn't it funny, that his new buddy Fox Top Trump never asked lyin Willardo for a copy of it?

What a joke. Less and less of the stupid right wing nuts come out to back lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader and bankrupter and they rave about it. As most people know, the evangelicals consider the mormons an evil anti-christ cult. The mormons have been converting dead jewish people, without their knowledge to become mormons to enhance their religion. They baptise them when they are dead. These sick aholes were caught when they tried to convert Anne Frank to be a mormon. The Church of the Latter Day Saints has now ordered these mormon priests to cease this immediately.

There is a new website now where you can convert any dead mormon to a homosexual. It works automatically, you just push a button. If you don't know any dead mormons, they will find you one. Now only if they find a way of converting lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader and bankrupter to an honest person.

You can try entering his name on the website, it may work on braindead mormons and braindead morons like most repukes are.

    http://alldeadmormon??sarenowgay.com/

These repuke dunces best bet is to bring back Herman (9Kampf) Cain, the dress slitherer. He can draft Jerry Sandusky for V.P. Who cares what they have done in the past, they are against abortion, that is all that counts.

CAIN/SANDUSKY 2012. The true repuke family values candidates.

For the life of me, I can't understand why Republicans have had such a hard time finding anyone credible to run for President. Despite his several degrees from supposed institutions of higher learning, Santorum is not a smart man. There's a big difference between dogmatic and smart. No one who believes in the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment would vote for this Christian fundamentalist. Then, we have a real smart man, Gingrich, who lies his face off and can't stop himself from being a serial philanderer. Then we have Romney, who's about as far removed from the lives of average people that it's stunning--1– My wife “drives a couple of Cadillacs;” 2 – “I have some great friends who are NASCAR team owners;” 3 – Annual speaking income of $370,000 is “not very much;” 4 – “I’m also unemployed;” 5 — “I like being able to fire people;” (my favorite!) 6 – “Corporations are people, my friend;” 7 – “I’ll tell you what. Ten thousand bucks. A $10,000 bet;” 8 – “I’m not concerned about the very poor;” 9 – “There are times when I wondered whether I was going to get a pink slip;” and 10 – Romney on Newt Gingrich: “He’s a wealthy man, a very wealthy man. If you have a half a million dollar purchase from Tiffany’s, you’re not a middle class American.”

So, instead of fairly decent politicians like Jon Huntsman or Gary Johnson, conservatives became enthralled with and later dispatched imbecilic phonies like Bachmann, Perry, and Cain. Santorum is next; Ron Paul should have stopped before he started. In the end, it'll be Mr. Corporation, the Party's favorite from the beginning, Mr. Etch-a-Sketch himself, the author of Romneycare, who dragged a dog on the roof of his car thousands of miles on a family vacation. It's like the Republican Party absorbed the Tea Party and became village idiots immediately. It must be a death wish of sorts.

Awesome post, Michael, I thoroughly enjoyed it. You made such excellent points and it has boggled my mind for awhile now that more Republicans don't speak out about this.

The behavior within their own party is so poor that they don't need any enemies. I'm always shocked how many seemingly intelligent people don't see the things you pointed out so brilliantly!!!

Eh, the more I watch these things unfold, the more Santorum strikes me as a bought-and-paid-for Jeezo-freak. Figure the strategists realized that Mitt and his Mormon schtick would never really win with the hard core religious types - so we get out a little makeup and give Rick a touch. He wasn't that profound a follower when he sorta served in PA, that's a fact. Makes me wonder which version of the Bible Santorum takes with him on the trail.

GOP blowhards make statements that they regret, and then when asked about them, they become idignant. Even Medvyedev alluded to Romney's adolescent comments concerning nuclear weapons. These GOP elites have devolved into overgrown, immature frat boys.

With regard to military and national defense strategy, we haven't truly had a capable president since WWII...Obama included. Romney is green in that area too, but he will at least have more support within the Military than Obama has. Obama is really weak...particularly when he can't even properly pronounce Corpsman multiple times while addressing the military as well as recent his whisper to tell Putin not to discuss the nukes situation until after his election, a pure politically inspired move....giving Russia undeserved nuclear leverage over America. Military frowns upon that kind of tactic.

Russia is in the middle of elections too. Their Duma is just as intractable as the US Congress. The US gov't was not based upon a military gov't hierarchy even though many conservative extremists wish it were now so. The militarization of the domestic and foreign policy is the problem.

@NB1- So what did I say state that was not true? Care to take issue with that rather than just conservatroll?

DOU. While I agree that there have been some conservative warmongers in GOP leadership, most conservatives are not pro-war, but they are very supportive of those that serve in the military. No conservative I know wants a Military Gov't hierarchy, despite that most of our military personnel are conservatives. But, there are also Democrat "warmongers" for government controlled social programs that have been just as successful, or destructive, depending on your perspective. All told, the US gov't should not based on either platform and if anything, it is already intruding on domestic policies with massive social programs led by the Democrats.

That was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction for sure. Why not say to the press dufus, "You are out of context with your question, would you like to me explain to you the context of your question?" We need a president that can handle the press and is able turn their own inept, out of context spin back on themselves and ruin their credibility. Many of these reporters have Zero journalistic credibility or skills.

NB, if anything Obama unintentionally helped reinforce the 2nd Amendment by his negative position on gun policy which in turn caused record numbers of Americans to buy lots of guns and ammo and get their state carry licenses. The firearms manufacturers and dealers are having a hay-day with Obama in office. Also, he hasn't pulled out of the wars like he promised, so the weapons manufacturers are still building a lot of gear to support the war efforts. The caveat is that if Obama gets re-elected with nothing to lose in his 2nd term, then there is no telling what he could try to pull off regarding the 2nd Amendment, among other "antiquated" constitutional issues he disagrees with.

He can't speak to US clearly, so what would happen when what he says is translated for other world leaders, etc. Geez Rick, if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
