SHREVEPORT, LA -- Mitt Romney said Friday afternoon that President Barack Obama should “apologize” to the American people for policies that the Republican presidential hopeful says have created “deficits that are too large” and “jobs that are too few.”
The remarks, delivered at the foot of a natural gas rig in northern Louisiana one day before this state’s primary, took the president to task over delaying construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada through the United States into Texas.
Thursday, Obama said he would speed permitting for construction of the southern half of the pipeline.
“This week he’s been taking credit for the lower half of the Keystone Pipeline being built. If I’m president, we’ll get the upper half built,” Romney said amid applause.
The Friday event was held in an area that has seen a flurry of natural gas exploration of the so-called Haynesville Shale, which runs underneath northwestern Louisiana and east Texas.
The setting seemed chosen at least in part to answer Obama’s own two-day tour this week of key swing states where the president defended his administration’s energy policies amid rising gasoline prices.
“I’m reminded of another tour he took at the beginning of his administration. Remember, he went around the Middle East and apologized for America,” Romney said, referring to a series of trips during 2009 that included a speech in Cairo that drew criticism from conservative corners of the foreign policy world.
“I think he’s got his tours backward,” Romney continued. “On his tour of the states here, where he’s been taking credit, he should have apologized for his policies.”
The event also marked the second time in one day that Romney addressed the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, a story that has ignited a national discussion about race and gun laws.
Calling Martin’s death a “terrible tragedy,” Romney told reporters here in Shreveport that it was appropriate for the district attorney to have called a grand jury investigation into the Feb. 26 shooting in Sanford, Florida.
The shooter, an armed neighborhood watchman, has not been arrested.
“Our hearts go out to his family, his loved ones, his friends,” Romney said about Martin's death. “This shouldn't have happened.”
In a written statement, Romney earlier called for an investigation into the shooting.
Romney’s statements came on the same day that Obama made his first comments on the case. Speaking to reporters from the White House Rose Garden during his announcement of a nominee for president of the World Bank, Obama said, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”

It seems to me that in 2008 the country was ready for a knock down drag out fight after the Bush years. And we had one - for the entire year. Everybody got into it. And no fight was worse than the one we saw within the Democratic Party - Kucinich v Obama v Edwards v Clinton.
Yet just 4 years later we see a presidential primary that is strictly off the wall in the GOP. It is either lies or culture issues. Or how best to protect the wealthy. That's it. And they are spending billions.
No where do any of us see where Romney stands on anything. All he does is try and turn the president's words and/or actions around, no matter what it is. Yet all he seems to accomplish is putting his big foot in his mouth time and time again. Because everything that comes out of it is false. It takes Think Progress and bloggers all of 20 minutes to shoot holes into whatever he has to say.
President Obama rarely has to explain himself and he always leaves a good impression wherever he goes. I know I feel better about our country whenever he speaks.
For me personally there just is no contest this election. Obama v Romney? Seriously? Romney is the guy who thought he was going to breeze to the nomination by staying away from the press. And when the press tries to get him to answer the simpliest questions, he just walks away. He's never had to stand and fight. President Obama has to do it every single day, yet still handles himself with a tremendous amount of grace.
We have a president who we get the feeling is not only the smartest man in the room, but also the most thoughtful and dignified.
If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon.
So so sad.
President Obama is who we want; he's who we need. And in 2012, just about all Democrats will be as one to see him re-elected.
The Democratic Party has come a long way in four years. It has not been easy, but we survived - as one. We can hold our heads up high.
The GOP just keeps going backwards. That's not the America we should be striving for if we want to be one of the supposed leaders of the world.
In order to be a leader, one must behave like a leader. President Obama is doing just that on our behalf. Romney? No. Not once.
Beautifully written, Pat. My sentiments exactly. Thanks.
Hey Pat:
****************STANDING OVATION**************************
Good Morning Pat,
We were getting worried, we hadn't seen you in awhile. Only last night Independent Reckneck was asking about you!
I see where you're time away was productive, because you sure know how to make an entrance!
Absolutely brilliant post my friend!
Romney once argued his only connection to GOP was party registration.
Very well written. I don't see anyone Democrat or Republican that could stand up to the integrity, intelligence, thoughtfulness, honesty that is President Obama. I think that is what Republicans are scared of. They speak of devisiveness. What could be more devisive than to make a vow from day 1 that he is a one term President or to argue against everything he does? Myself, I am proud to be a strong supporter of his and very much encourage every last Democrat, Independent, or intelligent Republican to vote Obama/Biden in 2012. To do otherwise will elect a President who won based on misinformation and blatant lies. Best wishes President Obama. God will be on your side.
This is what CBS did last night:
They showed a large map of the US with a heavy line through it, going from Canada through the Cushing to the Gulf Coast. (The GOP/Koch Pipeline Fantasy money-maker and fantasy gas-producer and fantasy job-creator.)
Then someone said you can put one foot on the Cushing connection, but your other foot will not connect going North - horror of horrors. And whichever spin they gave it - who did they blame? Well kids, they blamed it on the President.
The alternative route that will avoid Nebraska and the Ogallala Aquifer - the one that Nebraska Governor said NO to - has not yet been identified. Nothing to do or say until it is. Nothing to approve. Nothing to block. Zero, zero, zero.
The President said yesterday yet again, that when that the alternate route is found, and after TransCanada re-applies for a permit....guess what? Oh yeh -the Administration will review it. It will be reviewed. That part of the pipeline going north from Cushing will be reviewed. It will be reviewed, reviewed, reviewed...
So why do they tell this phony false story? It is a lie they are telling over and over. Romney here, Boehner told the same CBS version on Thursday and the American Crossroads Ads ran the same thing -----while the President was working to move America forward into the 21st century, with his all-of-the-above approach to American Energy.
Hi Backhouse. Nice work.
Lies are all the GOP have ever offered us. I guess they think it's what we deserve.
Pat,
From every angle you want to name, the GOP/Koch powerbrokers down through Norquist and the GOP leaders: their strategy is to create doubt, a world where truth has no quarter, and the future is so dark that it cannot be contemplated.
Backhouse, you know that. I know that. Most democrats know that. Even now Independents are seeing them for who they really are and are not happy with them. The problem is the "fair and balanced" media. They will go out of their way so as not to sound like Democrats or Obama supporters.
It matters to no one in the country who journalists vote for. What people are entitled to and seeking is the truth. And they're not getting it. Whatever BS spin the Republicans throw out there, a large segment of the media will see value in it. That's what nonstop news stations who need nonstop story lines have created. A monster. Full of lies. Especially FOX and CNN. The war mongers.
April 2009 President Obama's trip to Prague, where he spoke of getting rid of
nuclear material. The Promise of Prague lead to His 2010 Nuclear Security Summit.
Now our President is off to attend the 2012 Nuclear Summit.
His goal "to prevent nuclear terrorism."
HELL No, he should not apologize.
Safe trip Mr. President.
Pat, you are great. Glad you are here.
Thanks Backhouse, I love your posts as well.
You know, this post has been up for 6 hours now, not a republican post here,
I think you liberals have succeeded in running every opposing viewpoint off.
Congratulations!
I'm a conservative. You ignorant libs disgust me.
Well, now. That certainly was an enlightened opposing viewpoint.
Happy, Egilman?
Immensely!
;-0)
Of course you are.
You bet!
;-0) ;-0)
So....I guess, using the liberal line of thought, $10/gallon gas is way cheaper than $2/gallon gas. The only way to reduce fuel prices is to raise them. It's always the same, Obamacare will reduce the deficit, the stimulus will create jobs, the military will be stronger if we cut funding, etc..
Egilman
Censoring their opponents is what liberals do best.
You must not be much of an opponent considering your penchant for posting asinine comments, Rick.
You are an ass Sailcat
Sailcat-2064101
I know you are, so what am I? You are a true wordsmith sailor.
Neither part of the environmentally and economically dangerous Keystone XL Pipeline should have been approved. I am disappointed in Obama for his south-part signoff, and downright disturbed by Romney's plan to get the rest done.
We do not need to dignify this sort of sick policy.
You're right, we should have coal burning cars..
How is that asinine comment relevant to game kid's post? Pull yourself together.
game,
Rising oil production in Cushing Oklahoma has created a bottleneck there. In Colorado, Montana and ND - same thing, because production is outpacing pipeline capacity to send the oil to refineries.
In his remarks in Cushing the other day, the President spoke of expediting a better pipeline infrastructure there and making it a priority. Just common sensegiven the reality.
The Keystone issue approval/review is on hold until after an alternative route is found, because the Nebraska people and Governor said NO because of the risks to the Ogallala Aquifer.
President Obama NEVER said he wouldn't approve the Keystone XL Pipeline project - he has been waiting for an alternative route that didn't go through the Aquifers in Nebraska. The Republican Nebraskan Governor does not approve of the original route because of the Aquifers. Also, the Republicans didn't vote yes to keep the oil from this project inside the United States (not to be sold to other countries) which the Democrats are in favor of - only makes sense right?
Is any one else in the United States sick of Romney's constant lieing about anything and everything President Obama has ever said or done? Even when the independent fact checkers report Romney's lies, he never apologizes or corrects his statements. Do we really want someone who refuses to tell the truth as our President?
So you like $5/gallon gas? The truth? Like leftist like you spoke of Bush?
Well said, Ohmyohmy209.
Moneyos1,
Gas at the pump also went very high under the President Bush. It happens every year like clockwork and is dictated by global oil markets every year like clockwork.
Oil is a global commodity. Oil prices go up and down in tandem, no matter the size of country or how much oil it produces.
And no matter which party. We need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil for national security reasons as well.
Chart shows how global prices go up and down in tandem: http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2012/03/17/opinion/sunday/0318-web-edit1.html?ref=sunday
Romney once argued his only connection to GOP was party registration.
Thats pretty serious. Not a minor thing like being friends with a terrorist..
Romney is a Democrat !
What terrorist is Obama friends with exactly? Also Obama's energy policy makes more sense than drill baby drill. We do need an all of the above approach to energy Solendra was a mistake, but we can't let that prevent us from trying to develop green energy yes including solar power.
If Romney apologized to America, would anyone believe it was sincere?
Romney = bald faced liar
Obama in Cairo
And yet Bush is painted as WRONG now, Obama used the word Necessity and the phrase "not by choice". And that sums up WHY Bush as re-elected!!!
.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/remarks-president-cairo-university-6-04-09
ok Where did he apologize for America?
Did we receive apologies for the burning of our flag? No Did we receive apologies for the burning of bibles? No Did we receive apologies for the event of 9-11? No just the opposite in fact, we got cheered for dying!!! Do we ever receive apologies for any wrong doing by another nation? Nope
So why is our POTUS apologizing for anything? Oh yeah, its to calm the people down that are outraged by our Nation, right? You and I can be offended by someone burning our flag, bibles and for 9-11, but we do not need to be placated and soothed, we apparently are so well behaved we can have more taxes imposed, more laws imposed and we just sit back happy as clams, not caring that our pride is being thrown into the burn pile, or that our bodies took weeks to dig up from the rubble. We are just fine with being called the lazy and uneducated. Nope no problems here right. Sure we have fought in multiple wars beside multiple ethnicity varied folks, died for skin a different color from our own, never even questioning the sacrifice based on color, died for people of diff religions than our own. We have done everything to move forward and promote freedom for any who come here and tried to help other nations, even without being asked publicly.
Guess what folks, we can never apologize enough to make the world a bright sunshiny place, we can spend all our money and everyone elses and it will never be enough to buy other nations true freedom, we can give great speeches all day long about not wanting to interfere with others right by force yet we pass laws insisting people buy health insurance or be fined, we can never be tolerant enough bc there will always be those who will tolerate nothing but complete submission to their ways, we can elect all the multi ethnicity, multi religious, muilt partied presidents we want and it will never be enough to satisfy the entire mass. We can keep giving until there is nothing to give bc there will always be those who will keep taking and NEVER giving. We can argue about religious rights while forcing un-biblical beliefs on religious organizations, it will never be over.
We can sit here today totally sure Obama is the best man for the job, just like Apparently everybody thought Bush was the man for the job TWICE. Then Obama got elected and it turns out Bush had been a very bad boy, right? Clinton - elected twice= Bad boy right? So what makes everybody on here just so peachy king sure that Obama will be the one POTUS to get re-elected and have nothing COME out after his terms are up? It is almost statistically impossible for him to not screw up. I would like to see a demo bash Obama the same way I can bash all my GOP candidates!!!
Yes, I am a Ron Paul fan, but mainly for the simple reasons and he sure is consistent and he apologizes for HIS MISTAKES and that of his fellow politicians. I am not a big fan of some of his other more goofy issues, but I agree that our govt has left our hands and has gone into the 'soon to be next big loser after the fact' Presidents or candidates. If RP did everything he wants to do ALL on his first day, our nation would collapse from sheer shock, then it might collapse economically but I have more faith in my fellow citizens than our govt does.
I am terrified to see what we find out AFTER Obamas 2nd term. Just terrified and you folks should be as well!!! Course as it stands I would be horrified to see the end of a Ron Paul term. The things we find out afterwards are just shocking!!! At this point all we are missing is a woman disguised as a man!!!
BTW has Obama apologized the Native Americans whose treaty we broke? Bet not, bc they have one heck of a claim against the govt', but too much pride to sue!!! But if Obama was to knowledge that WE broke a treaty he would have started the first step to correcting it and that would never happen.
