VIDEO: The Week Ahead: Supreme Court takes up health law
By NBC's Domenico Montanaro and Andrew Gross
Oral arguments begin at the Supreme Court, President Obama goes to Korea, the Battle in the Bayou, Mitt Romney on Leno and Vice President Biden campaigns in Iowa.
Me too! And I really, really need a drink to shake off my pissy mood today! And thanks for posting up that tune again Feisty! Now, let me go get a drink. BRB
I'll take that vodka Martini UP, DRY, shaken hard enough to get ice crystals, with a twist. Speaking of twists, how about one round of 'Disco Duck' on the jukebox in honor of the Secret Service. For all you disco detractors out there, not to worry, it is a great line dance song :)
I'll be hosting a new game at the DDI tonight called "Things Obama Mighta' Said". To keep it simple for the Obama-bashers in the crowd, it is a True/False game, and the answers are always False. Sample question: "Obama wants $10 gasoline?" Answer: False! For anyone that scores 100%, a round of drinks is on me.
To the the First Read gang -- Thanks one and all. It's been an interesting, kind of fun week with all the gaffes and stuff. Keep up the great work. Cheers all!
Good Afternoon everyone. In keeping with last night's Beatles theme and the fact summer is on its way I'll put Here Comes the Sun on the jukebox. Maybe it will cheer a few people up. (The Bob's, NJNB, Brianb etc.)
Dang is it Friday already. Don’t time just hurry along when you’re having a good time. Well the old Caretaker is back from wandering in the wilderness or at least the wilds of Yankee land
Looks like I got back just in time to put a spike in the latest Conspiracy Theory by Nojo and her Merry band of Yahoo’s. Seems like this story was put up and then taken off the net pretty quickly. That coupled with the fact that Fox was apparently not given access to it or just didn’t report it tells me there must be something going on. I’m sure there is Government waste just running rampant all thru this but you’ll be the judge.
So since we’ve kind of got a free weekend between St.Paddy’s day and the NCAA Championship game down at the Dew Drop Inn we are going to run a special where you can get one drink free if you put in a small donation to defray expenses here. That would include Secret Service Salaries for their assistance in this matter of utmost National Security.
Wouldn’t want the President and First Lady be accused of pushing Little Ducks in the pond now would we?
As always my thanks and appreciation to our hosts for their time, giving me a little place to stand, a subject to comment on, a forum to put it in, and their indulgence when I don’t quite get it right or get a little off subject. I purely do appreciate it. Hope you’ll have a fine weekend and good fun among folks that you know and love. To my fellow participants keep well, keep safe, and keep the faith. We’ll make it. See you’ll in a couple of weeks.
Drive-by old buddy if you’re out there how’s about hitting E-27 on the old Juke Box. “Convoy” by C.W. McCall. That’s a big ten fer there Rubber Ducky.
You got to watch out for those Terrorist Ducks there don't you know Betty. Why I'm sure that cost Old Uncle Whiskers a buck two ninety eight in lost time alone.
Feisty, did you post a wrap up? Love to read those,
Do you mean Jody in IA?
She is the weekly wrap up artist! ☺
I will take the liberty of re-posting on Jody's behalf;
"And that's the way it is"....this week.
The "founding members of the Flat Earth Society" continued their "gas" attack blaming President Obama for higher prices at the pump. People should recognize by now that the Flat Earthers suffer flatus of the mouth.
Former democratic IL Gov Rod Blagoyevich was locked up to serve 14 years. Maybe he and republicans George Ryan and Duke Cunningham can get together weekly to play poker.
After first saying he would "get rid of Planned Parenthood", Romney flip flopped saying he doesn't want to close Planned Parenthood, he just wants to de-fund it. That'll get women's votes especially considering he wants to de-fund Title 10, eliminate contraception and whatever else he thinks should be fired.
Ann Coulter declared that the conservative party has "more charlatans than democrats do". Wow, who'da thunk she'd actually say it?
Ohio State Senator Nina Turner introduced legislation that requires men to have a certified statement from their partners to prove they need Viagra, have a stress test, see a sex therapist and watch a video of the side affects and risks. Obviously, men cannot possibly know what's good for them without government telling them and showing them pictures!
Based on documents found in his hideout, Osama bin Laden was upset because President Obama stopped using the term War on Terror like Bush and instead used War on Al Qaeda. OBL knew that signified the US wasn't fighting a war with Muslims but rather one with the real terrorists. What say the GOPers who whined Obama wasn't using War on Terror any more? Seems to have bugged the heck out of OBL!
At the rope line after a speech at Prince George's Community College, a deaf student signed to President Obama "I am proud of you" and to Stephon's surprise, Obama signed back "thank you." Who knew our President understood sign language?
Paul Ryan released a video trailer last week touting his latest budget con complete with gloom, doom and scary music. Then he released his "Pathway to Prosperity" and the gloom, doom and scary music made sense. Religious leaders released statements calling the Ryan plan an "immoral disaster"; a Catholic bishop in Ryan's district called it a "cruel budget plan". What's stunning is that after his disastrous plan last year which included killing medicare and just about everything else, Paul Ryan doubled down--maybe he thinks changing the word "voucher" to "premium support" will make a difference. More stunning, the GOP House gluttons for punishment will vote on it!
AZ GOP Rep Rick Crawford announced to his district that he would propose a 5% surtax on individual incomes exceeding $1 million per year. Finally, a realistic republican with the courage to disagree with King Grover Norquist. Crawford gets a Gold Star.
Wisconsin GOP State Senator Pam Galloway unexpectedly resigned effective midnight last Friday. Guess she decided it was easier than facing her June recall.
PA Gov Tom Corbett wins the Clueless Prize for his support of the mandatory ultrasound legislation by saying "they don't have to watch, they can close their eyes." Well, then, what is the point of forcing women to have an unnecessary, expensive medical procedure, Gov Corbett? Is it to humiliate and degrade women? Ahh, yes, there we have it.
Meanwhile the PA Medical Association told the govenor and lawmakers to butt out of medical decisions. Cheers to the doctors.
The maverick John McCain appeared over the weekend. He called Citizens United "one of the worst Supreme Court has ever made" and attributed it to their "naivete and sheer ignorance." Whoa, those are four republicans appointed justices he's talking about appointed by none other than GOP presidents.
On MTP, McCain said repubicans should stop the anti-contraception talk. Perhaps McCain can explain why he voted "yea" on the Blunt-Rubio amendment to ban contraception coverage; or does he want to ban it just not discuss banning it?
VA's mandatory ultrasound bill also mandates women pay for something they don't want or need but McDonnell said democrats are playing politics because they tried to amend the bill so that it doesn't require women to pay for unnecessary procedures that the state mandates. Yeah, right, McDonnell. It's the democrats who are playing politics--may the bird of paradise fly up his nose.
The IA Supreme Court ruled that Gov Branstad's use of the line-item veto on SF517 was unconstitutional because he didn't return the money saved to Congress. Branstad's angry response was to threaten more closures of Work Force Development offices and more lay offs. Temper tantrum, Terry?
The Donald was back with "wind is destroying the environment in many, many places." True, tornadoes and hurricanes wreck havoc on the environment--wind wrecks havoc on Trump's hair.
Karen Santorum tried to reassure women that Rick would never interfere with contraception rights for women. In the words of Newt, that's "pious baloney". Any candidate who views contraception as evil, who has not denounced the state and federal GOP legislators trying to restrict and/or ban it, will gladly promote its outlaw and sign the bill to do it. Let's just call bull what it is--bull.
Mitt Romney had a Whopper of a Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire Day on FOX. He said it is President Obama's failed leadership that caused an American soldier to kill 17 Afghan civilians; he should be more engaged. He repeated the falsehood that in 2008, Candidate Obama said he wanted higher gas prices. And President Obama "outlawed the Thomas Edison light-bulb." Psst, Willard, it was George W. who signed the law requiring more energy efficient light-bulbs plus incandescent bulbs are not outlawed. Has Mitt been reading Michele Bachmann speeches again? Romney, a serial liar who wants to be POTUS! Would you trust him?
Rick Santorum told supporters he's a "fighter for freedom" and the unemployment rate "doesn't matter to me." The next day he said he really didn't mean it.
Romney gave his Yippee, I won IL speech with all the robotic enthusiasm he could muster. He mocked President Obama for being a Constitutional law professor and a community organizer while bragging he spent 25 years in business--bankrupting companies wasn't mentioned. Hey, Willard, try reading about Altgeld Gardens before joining Palin's community organizer crazy train.
Santorum gave his Uh oh, I lost IL speech in PA and indicated he would "saddle up like Reagan in the cowboy movies did" and head off to find that shining city on the hill in Louisiana or Wisconsin or....Onward Christian Soldiers...
AZ Sheriff Joe Arpaio requested the US Selective Service help him with his investigation of President Obama's birth certificate. Sheriff Joe claims it's a forgery and that Obama's selective service registration form is likely a forgery as well. How many "birthers" does it take to change a light bulb? Doesn't matter because birthers wouldn't recognize a light bulb as a light bulb in the first place.
Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny presented President Obama with a framed, official Certificate of Irish Heritage saying "these are rare, as rare as the man himself." Obama thanked him, "this will have a special place of honor...(big smile) along side my birth certificate!"
Not to be ignored this week, Newt Gingrich blew the secret Muslim dog whistle again by stating that President Obama "appeases radical Islamists and attacks Christians." Newt refused to correct a supporter who called President Obama a Muslim--the Cowardly Newt Lion talks tough about Iran and doesn't have the courage to correct a supporter let alone stand up to Rush Limbaugh.
Then there was this priceless gem. Less that 24 hours after his win in IL, Romney's senior campaign staffer declared they would push the "reset button" for the fall campaign like an Etch-a-Sketch, just shake it up and start over!
The Dept of Justice and FBI will investigate the death of 17-year old Trayvon Martin who was shot to death walking back to his dad's from a convenience store with a bag of Skittles and an iced tea. George Zimmerman remains free to walk the streets still carrying his 9mm weapon to Stand his Ground with the next unarmed teen he thinks looks suspicious who is walking while being black.
Romney tried to credit George W. Bush and Hank Paulsen with saving the economy. Lying again, Willard? It was widely reported and documented in books that Paulsen contacted Candidate and President Elect Obama for help because Bush had disengaged and McCain didn't get it. But, hey, if Romney wants to run on the Bush economy--have at it. Mr. Etch-a-Sketch can push the reset button tomorrow and wipe out his words!
Jeb Bush sort of endorsed Mitt Romney by issuing a statement saying it was time for republicans to unite and elect Romney. Bush was more enthused about suggesting Marco Rubio for VP. While a Bush pat on the back might help in the GOP primary, it is likely to be a Bush-albatross for the general election.
The Three Muskateers--McCain, Lieberman and Graham--said President Obama must resist the calls to leave Afghanistan. How many more American lives, how many more years, how many more tragedies will do it for these guys?
The Bachmann "Chitspa" Award this week goes to Pastor Dennis Terry who introduced Rick Santorum at a church and told non-Christians to "get out" of the US. What is it with these yahoos? GOPer Allen West told liberals to get out of the US and now non-Christians must go, too. Chutzpah runs amok. Personally, I intend to stay in the country where I was born and annoy the self-righteous, intolerant numnuts every chance I get!!!
Thanks for the duck story, IR. I'm celebrating the return of a certain sailor so will buy the first round of Sea Breezes at the DDI tonight.
So far in the comparison of how they treat animals, we have President Obama and his dog Bo v. Mitt Romney and Seamus. We also have the Obama White House and the ducks v. Sarah Palin and the beheading of the turkeys.
A round of Sea Breezes followed by a quick exit out the back door to the Comeback Inn my dear where our generous staff will keep you'll in room service till Monday morning my Dear. Hey to the Sailor Man I know your glad to see him.
Frozen or the one's with Jose Quervo Gold My Dear.We aim to please. I take it your back home. Seems we had a little kerflufal over safety and South Of the Border this week
IR, Jose Quervo Gold please. I wasn't aware their was a Kerfluful over safety this week. Do you have any details? I'm back home for a while. Going back for a fishing tournament in May.
We are all out of popcorn! Are oysters on the half-shell good for everyone? Bombay Saphire martinis straight up with a twist ... four should get me vertical.
Lisa President's daughter Malia was down there on Spring Break and that seems to have offended some folks proprieties. That's what the Duck stuff is all about. I'll check in at the DDI and get the scoop on the wedding. Glad to see you back
Feisty and IR, Thanks for the information. Security is very tight in Mexico right now between the Pope's visit and the G-20 meeting in Cabo in June. I hope Malia had a good time I know I did. Everyone have a great weekend
We could be Uma Thurman & John Travolta in Pulp Fiction! lmao!
I do believe Marsellus Wallace, my husband, your boss, told you to take ME out and do WHATEVER I WANTED. Now I wanna dance, I wanna win. I want that trophy, so dance good.
All those drinks sound good tonight, anyone of them will do while I listen to the tunes IR, Mark and others have punched on the juke box. Think I'll just watch the dancin'
Not much of a dancin' fool myself, happy to listen to the music. If the bar's open how about a Hendricks martini, dry, with a twist and two very thin slices of English cucumber. And as RedDev described above, shaken hard enough for ice crystals.
Don't always say much but I'm always listening. Heading to DDI to join you for drinks and watch a little KU basketball. If they win, I'll buy the rest of the night!
Hendricks is a Scottish gin. It carries a flavor that is greatly enhanced by cucumber. I'll rub the rim of the glass with a cucumber as well. English cucumbers are more expensive than the standard ones, but have a tighter seed pattern and richer flavor.
Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the FR Arena! Our featured bout tonight spotlights in the left corner, wearing the blue trunks, from Roselle, Illinois, Feisty Redhead! In the right corner, sporting red trunks, from New Jersey, no joe, no bo! This is an unrestricticed, no round limit, knock-out-only-to-win world championship event!
Unlimited rounds - knockout to win - but I don't see it going past one myself. Don't tell the promoters - they'll pull the plug and since I put my upside down house up for collateral to get the money to swing this thing its gotta happen or I'll be forced to flee the country to avoid getting fitted with da cement shooz.
Does it really matter what the SCOTUS rules?? Mitt can repeal the stupid law after next January. If that doesn't work, de-fund it to death, and give all citizens a waiver.
Unfortunately, for you, if it isn’t repealed and SCOTUS says it isConstitutional then the President is required by the Constitution to uphold and defend the law.
How are you? Good I hope, I've been on a 3 day trip so haven't posted anything. You are right the President can not repeal a law, only congress can. However, the President does not have to defend a law, only uphold it. Remember we had this conversation about the DOMA when President Obama ordered the AG not to defend the law, thereby, the House had to hire outside legal representation to defend the law.
As I qualified on the ACA (if SCOTUS ruled it to be constitutional) the President has to defend it.
The top court has not ruled on DOMA thus the Administration does not have to defend it because they claim, right or wrong, that it is unconstitutional. If the court at some point rules DOMA to be constitutional then the President must defend it.
At least that is what I understand how the constitution defines the duty of the POTUS in regard to Federal laws.
Mark is on a roll! I will have to try some Hendricks Scottish gin. i do love a nice gin and tonic in the summer. And I think in MN it will arrive before July this year.
I was talking to a fellow Church member and amazingly, this is what he said to me.
“My current unpaid Emergency room bill stands at $150,000.00, and you know what, I have continued to use the emergency room for treatment any time I fall ill. The law prevents them from refusing to treat me.
Each time I fall sick, the only option I have is to go to the emergency room because I do not have a family doctor, which would be obviously cheaper. This is because I have no healthcare coverage.
It is 20 times expensive to go to the emergency room than to visit a personal doctor but it is the only option I have any time I fall sick.
Each time I visit an emergency room, my bill is in the rage of $2000.00 but I have never been able to pay and I do not intend to pay because it no longer makes no difference to my credit standing.
Emergency room bills have already spoiled my credit so what is the point of paying even a dime each time I visit?
I still have to visit emergency room anyway each time I fall ill. The amount I owe so far is $150,000 but it is good that I do not have any mandate to pay any insurance but I still have to visit the emergency room because the current law prevents them from not treating me.
There are currently millions of Americans like me who do not have healthcare and the only option they have each time they fall sick is to visit emergency room. Their credits scores have already been messed up by huge hospital bills so why should they fear visiting emergency room due to high bills.
Currently, the amount millions of people like me owe to the emergency room which they will never pay runs into billions of dollars which is paid by taxpayers through the government.
What Republicans are referring to as Obama care is nicely structured to take care of this problem. This means that someone like me who is currently using emergency room but paying nothing will be required to contribute at least some little healthcare premium every month. Other millions like me will no longer burden the emergency room with huge bills, which they cannot pay and are to be shouldered by taxpayers. When I pay my share and other millions like me pay their share, these huge billions of emergency room bills will be lifted off the tax-payers shoulders because my monthly premium and the monthly premiums of others like me will absorb it before it spread to the tax-payers."
Republicans are blinded with politics and are refusing to see the benefits of health care reform. Healthcare reform is very beneficial for the country and need to be supported by every right thinking American.
I went to a local First Care center last weekend because I was ill. Just got the bill: $590.00 to tell me it was low blood sugar, and I need to eat small, frequent meals. Thank God I have insurance, but if I didn't, it would take me awhile to pay that bill.
How is the Government going to make your church friend pay for his health insurance if he chooses not to (like he chooses not to make an effort to pay the emergency room). The insurance is going to be only partially subsidized -- he's going to have to pay some of the premium.
If he doesn't pay for insurance per the rules of ACA, then there will be a monetary penalty. Since your friend doesn't appear inclined to pay his bills, how is the government going to collect that penalty amount?
Would they garnish wages? What if your friend is unemployed, or works for cash?
I bet he'll continue to go to the ER for care. The doctors will have to treat him. He will scoot out on paying for anything. And we'll all be in the same situation as before ----him getting care at the expense of you and me and everyone else --- except for now it's hugely expensive, controversial and restrictive.
The penalty is in the form of a tax credit. So you will owe more or get a smaller refund if you cannot prove you had health insurance all year. As we all know if you don’t pay the IRS what you owe you will end up in deep dodo.
Now you did bring up a question I have wondered about … what happens to those that don’t work or work for under-the-table cash and don’t file tax returns? Are these some of the same people that are currently taking advantage (cheating) Medicaid? Of course we have those today and there will always be a few people that find ways to cheat the government – mostly found in illegal activities.
I can see the recovery through tax filings. Since about half of the country don't pay taxes, and many under a certain income don't even file, there will more than a few, I believe, who will try to slip through.
The hospitals around here (by law) set aside 25% of paid services to cover those who don't pay. That's a huge reason those of us who have insurance or pay outright pay more for services. The ACA bill won't fix that.
It's all about enforcement. The law requiring auto insurance in Illinois is never enforced. I am skeptical about the government enforcing this provision of ACA.
Over $1 billion was owed by federal employees and postal workers in unpaid taxes in 2010. If the Government can't get taxes from their own employees, why should we have confidence they will collect penalties owed by regular citizens - or non citizens?
It may be handled like payroll tax (SS & Medicare) that everyone pays but if you have insurance you get it back.
It will help because even if people don’t pay their bill the insurance companies will pay the 80% they are responsible for.
Enforcement is another issue but all the verification of insurance and the collection of fines will be done by the IRS I believe may work. I’m sure there will be some initial bugs that will be worked out over the first couple of years.
Nothing is perfect but it is a start. A single payer system would be the most cost effective and provide the largest health care savings.
Candice -- Here is an article on what those same people owed in taxes in 2007 and 2008. The figures were 3 + billion. So the 2010 figure you used of 1 billion owed, means the IRS, under this President, is doing a pretty good job of collecting the revenues owed to them.
WASHINGTON - At a time when the White House is projecting the largest deficit in the nation's history, Uncle Sam is trying to recover billions of dollars in unpaid taxes from its own employees.
Federal workers owe more than $3 billion in income taxes they failed to pay in 2008. According to Internal Revenue Service documents, 276,300 federal employees and retirees owe $3,042,200,000.
The IRS tracks the voluntary compliance rate of federal employees and retirees each year, and each year feds come up short. The one bright spot in this year's report is that after several years of a steady increase, the amount owed by feds is down from the previous year.
Federal employees and retirees owed $3,586,784,725 in unpaid income taxes in 2007.
My dad was an IRS agent and eventually they get 90+% of the money owed from late or non-filers. Millions of people are delinquent on their taxes every year. A friend of mine got behind on his taxes (about $15K) and it took him 6 years to pay it all back including penalties and interest.
Most of the high court experts expect SCOTUS to uphold the ACA by 6-3 decision.
Candice and NoJo have that weird story where they are victims of government. In their world, the government screws them to the wall, while giving the 99% of the population a free pass to riot, loot , and pillage their way to the top. As long as their hold that belief dear to their hearts, there is no convincing them otherwise. I propose, let them stay the victims, for they have lost nothing but ideology.
Has Candice experienced riots? Doubt it. Looting? Come on! Pillage? Not. But in her twisted mind, somewhere, someone has done something, and the poor thing is freaked it could happen to her.
To Candice, I would say, Wake up Sister .. you could be next. Ask a Serbian sister, ask a Rawandian Sister, ask a Tayvar. Do you exterminate, or accept? I see a glimmer of acceptance .. I challenge you to pay it forward.
the supreem court bound by old constituions cant rule in truth anymore. what worked when the constituion was written isnt nessasarlly how it should be today. lawers and criminals have used it very effectivly. what was needed a hundred years ago isnt what is needed at times today. to me its like we are bound almost by superstitions, we need some changes. we need to allow the supreem court freedom to make decisions based on truth . the ruleing they made on the realease of murders from prison is an example of poor and unfair judacation by the court.
Kennedy will decide if the Federal government can force US to buy something from a 3rd party. God be with him and save us from ourselves. Dismantling obamacare most important task of court in years!
If you don’t want health care insurance you are not required to purchase it but then you are not eligible for the tax credit for having health insurance.
hot daddy.... give me good reasonable reasons why health care reform should be repealled. The opponents who scream repeal, repeal, repeal have: 1)no alternative to curb rising premiums2) have so much disinformation about this law that it makes their arguments meaningless. Where do you fall in?
Health Care reform... when fully implemented... reduces the cost of medicare, gives an opportunity to those with preexisting conditions to get health insurance without mortgaging their house, reduces health insurance premiums across the board. Where was all this junk about individual freedoms and unconstitutionality when we passed the no fault auto insurance bill ??? that required everyone to have auto insurance!
CBO has just increased its estimate of "Obamacare" by another TRILLION dollars, duh............ THe states passed no fault auto insurance NOT THE FEDS.
Feds derive their power from the Constitution. If it aint there, then they cannot do it.
The government has control over the VA and it is one damn mess. Talk to a Vet about government run health care dumba$$!
Dennis why do you constantly lie on here? There are young impressionable children reading this thread that probably believe you are telling the truth.
You must be paid by the DNC to spread lies and misrepresentations. Yes for a $2,500 dollar fine, I can dump my employees into Obamacare, knowing that it will rise each year as that does not address the cost. It is a lost leader so that we end up with a single payers system by default.
Premiums have risen in anticipation of the burden of Obamacare by the insurance companies. So we are already paying for the crap in advance. It is a killer to the job creator, but whenever did the Dims ever care about "jobs"? Isn't that something that either the union or the government creates? How stupid are you?
Hot daddy said - CBO has just increased its estimate of "Obamacare" by another TRILLION dollars
So, where did Republicans get their $1.76 trillion cost figure? That’s the gross cost for 11 years ending in 2022. Republicans inappropriately compare that figure to the original estimate of $938 billion for the 10-year period ending in 2019.
The 11-year figure is much higher because it includes three additional years of full implementation of the coverage provisions of the law. The federal subsidies and expansion of Medicaid, which are by far the most costly elements of the coverage provisions, don’t go into effect until 2014. So, that 2010-2019 estimate includes four years of very low coverage costs (relatively speaking), and the 11 year estimate only includes two years of very low costs, plus three extra years of full implementation costs.
So, hot daddy just read the headlines, not the undying information and evaluate the reasons.
Yes it is, it is a very good start to fix a national long-term problem that without some kind of fix will bankrupt our nation faster, sooner than any other issue we face.
What is the SUPREME COURT doing messing with OBAMACARE! Forget it! Let's take on the CORRUPT OIL CORPORATIONS one product(oil) which is CONSUMING THE 99% American People because it is causing Major Inflation of ALL OTHER PRODUCTS, that we, the American People need to survive and feed our families! That's NOT DEMOCRACY, that's HYPOCRISY!!! DECLARE THIS COMMODITY UNCONSTITUTIONAL! Get this right FIRST, and then you can talk OBAMACARE!
Let us not forget two years ago today was a BIG f@cking deal!
Ask Biden... tee hee
I remember breaking out a bottle of top notch *bubbly* & will be doing the same when the SCOTUS upholds ObamaCare!
Many thanks to the hardest working hosts/moderators on the web; Mark & Domenico for giving us so much to chew on every week!
See ya'll over @ the Dew Drop Inn - where we are holding our own candle light vigil for Trayvon Martin!
The flames will continue to burn until Trayvon's killer (George Zimmerman) is arrested & tried for cold blooded murder!
Ooops... I forgot to mention, we will be having a dance contest to "Shake it up Baby" in honor of Willard
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=pVlr4g5-r18
First Prize - Etch-A-Sketch
Second Prize - Etch-A-Sketch
Third Prize - Etch-A-Sketch
Booby prize......Magic 8 Ball since that seems to be where most of the answers to Republican/T.P. politics are found this year
Proof that the Affordable Care Act is NOT unconstitutional: http://www.politifact.com/rhode-island/statements/2012/jan/13/einer-elhauge/harvard-law-professor-says-early-congress-mandated/
I'm digging it!
Shake it, shake it, shake it up baby!
And I prefer dancing over sparring today! ; )
"Dancing with the Spars" -- doncha know it's all the rage?
I love to shake martini's while dancing to that tune! lol
Thanks to our FR hosts for another week of politics.
Cheers to ACA! The Roberts' SCOTUS will be under intense scrutiny after the botched Citizens United decision.
Time to head to the DDI. It's been a crazy week.
Me too! And I really, really need a drink to shake off my pissy mood today! And thanks for posting up that tune again Feisty! Now, let me go get a drink. BRB
Thanks to you DCIA, I was humming it ALL day yesterday! ;o)
Cheers!
Cheers, Jody! I'll drink to that.
Lol, Anna, good one!
Place you requests, drop your quarters and turn up the music!
Enjoy the evening and weekend all!!
Hopefully, the high court will do the right thing and leave the Affordable Care Act as is.
Mr Anon,
thanks for the link. Great history lesson.
let me buy you a drink the DDI, whatever you like...
Cheers!
Cheers, Feisty!
Have a wonderful weekend all!

You got to watch out for those Terrorist Ducks there don't you know Betty. Why I'm sure that cost Old Uncle Whiskers a buck two ninety eight in lost time alone.
Follow it up with.... Old Home Filler-Up An' Keep On-A Truckin' Cafe....Mark
Do you mean Jody in IA?
She is the weekly wrap up artist! ☺
I will take the liberty of re-posting on Jody's behalf;
Great way to end the week, IR. I saw those baby ducks on the news; no doubt their undercover ducks and well protected. Glad to donate to the cause.
dlb98, I post those weekly wraps on First Thoughts Fridays and thank Feisty for reposting it here!
Duckgate! lol IR. That's funny! Cheers, friend!
A round of Sea Breezes followed by a quick exit out the back door to the Comeback Inn my dear where our generous staff will keep you'll in room service till Monday morning my Dear. Hey to the Sailor Man I know your glad to see him.
If this end of bar is putting country on the jukebox, how bout a little Dierks Bently or Zac Brown Band. Yeah baby!
Feisty and IR, I'm still in a margarita state of mind any chance of getting one at DDI. Have a good weekend.
Going back for a fishing tournament in May.
lisa,
I think I will have the same.
Now tell me all about the wedding...
Can't wait for the dance contest to start ... rumor has it that ideology is a great dancer... Right NDD??
but I think i will wait for Mickey with his NY style.
Thanks to the hosts and everyone have a relaxing weekend.
Glad politics will turn to the SCOTUS next week.
I know I am getting tired of the GOP crazy clown show day in and day out.
Wonder if Spanky will be hosting one of Romney's fund raisers in Cali next week?
We are all out of popcorn! Are oysters on the half-shell good for everyone? Bombay Saphire martinis straight up with a twist ... four should get me vertical.
NorthstarDFL, I posted wedding details at DDI. Thanks for asking.
Lisa,
It was all about Malia Obama's school trip to Mexico - quite the nontroversy this week around here... lol
Welcome back!
On my way with refills...
[...but I think i will wait for Mickey with his NY style.]
Good Lord...you DO NOT wanna see me dance...but just keep the Maker's Mark flowing and I promise you a sight you will never forget!
Oh, and I will need a dance partner...
Yes we do Mickey, we know you got swagger!
Come shake it up baby!
I would be honored...
We could be Uma Thurman & John Travolta in Pulp Fiction! lmao!
Mark,
The martini drinkers have arrived. An English cucumber...hmmmm... I will try one if you don't mind?
Red Dev, cheers to you too.
Don't always say much but I'm always listening. Heading to DDI to join you for drinks and watch a little KU basketball. If they win, I'll buy the rest of the night!
Northstar, That English cucumber sounds good to me too.
Hi Northstar,
Hendricks is a Scottish gin. It carries a flavor that is greatly enhanced by cucumber. I'll rub the rim of the glass with a cucumber as well. English cucumbers are more expensive than the standard ones, but have a tighter seed pattern and richer flavor.
Cheers!!
Rachel,
Good to see you found your way to the DDI - first drink is on the house!
We take requests on our old jukebox as well...
Ok Feisty...the first dance is yours...better hold on to your pantaloons! ;)
Should have put quotes around "got swagger". It's a line in a song. ; )
Last chance for Justices Thomas and Kagan to do the right thing and recuse themselves.
Not a good week in the courts for the Obama administration. The SCOTUS rules nine to nothing against the EPA ear,ire this week- and now this
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/74414.html
Kind of makes you wonder how long before Jackson finds herself beneath the wheels of the bus. . .
Looks like the NJ nut job got a head start on us with the cocktails...
While you're at it - regale of with your tales of Mumbai, Malia's trip and any other conspiracy theory you can't let GO of! lmao!
Now.......
LET'S GET READY TO RUUUUMMMMMBLE!!!!!!
LOL, Mark!
You can place your bets here...
Feisty is the odds on favorite... ;o)
Feisty, Your going to take the bets and do the fighting. How about I take the bets?
Lisa,
Excellent idea! I know I'm in good hands! ☺
Put my money on Feisty!
I'd like to see Bob in the ring! lol
The sponsors considered Bob as an opponent, but felt the fight revenue would be better with no jo.
Mark in SoCal, If I take the bets do I get a cut of the revenue. Just kidding I'd do this for free. How many rounds?
Seriously?
Knock out in the first... lol
Feisty, K.O in the first. You heard it here.
lisa
Unlimited rounds - knockout to win - but I don't see it going past one myself. Don't tell the promoters - they'll pull the plug and since I put my upside down house up for collateral to get the money to swing this thing its gotta happen or I'll be forced to flee the country to avoid getting fitted with da cement shooz.
Mark in SoCal, You are too funny tonight.
[Feisty is the odds on favorite...]
WOOHOO! Chick fight! ;)
I see NoJo is still twisting the truth on the EPA ruling...sad...so very sad.
My money is on Feisty---I think the truth always wins over lies, distortions and hatred.
Does it really matter what the SCOTUS rules?? Mitt can repeal the stupid law after next January. If that doesn't work, de-fund it to death, and give all citizens a waiver.
End of problem.
Unfortunately, for you, if it isn’t repealed and SCOTUS says it is Constitutional then the President is required by the Constitution to uphold and defend the law.
Dennis,
How are you? Good I hope, I've been on a 3 day trip so haven't posted anything. You are right the President can not repeal a law, only congress can. However, the President does not have to defend a law, only uphold it. Remember we had this conversation about the DOMA when President Obama ordered the AG not to defend the law, thereby, the House had to hire outside legal representation to defend the law.
Hi Sarge,
As I qualified on the ACA (if SCOTUS ruled it to be constitutional) the President has to defend it.
The top court has not ruled on DOMA thus the Administration does not have to defend it because they claim, right or wrong, that it is unconstitutional. If the court at some point rules DOMA to be constitutional then the President must defend it.
At least that is what I understand how the constitution defines the duty of the POTUS in regard to Federal laws.
lisa,
Mark is on a roll!
Thankyou, Sam! Beautifully put.
I went to a local First Care center last weekend because I was ill. Just got the bill: $590.00 to tell me it was low blood sugar, and I need to eat small, frequent meals. Thank God I have insurance, but if I didn't, it would take me awhile to pay that bill.
Sam,
How is the Government going to make your church friend pay for his health insurance if he chooses not to (like he chooses not to make an effort to pay the emergency room).
How is this any better?
Candice,
The penalty is in the form of a tax credit.
Hi, Dennis.
Candice,
It may be handled like payroll tax (SS & Medicare) that everyone pays but if you have insurance you get it back.
So the 2010 figure you used of 1 billion owed, means the IRS, under this President, is doing a pretty good job of collecting the revenues owed to them.
http://www.wtop.com/?nid=&sid=1838232
The article was written in December of 2009.
Sam is your "friend" an illegal or just a bum?
You have much more confidence in the bureaucracy of government agencies than I do. I wish I could believe!
Of course, none of this may matter depending on what the Court decides. We'll see.
Candice,
My dad was an IRS agent and eventually they get 90+% of the money owed from late or non-filers.
Look to the VA for the quality of your health care . Government run morass.
the supreem court bound by old constituions cant rule in truth anymore. what worked when the constituion was written isnt nessasarlly how it should be today. lawers and criminals have used it very effectivly. what was needed a hundred years ago isnt what is needed at times today. to me its like we are bound almost by superstitions, we need some changes. we need to allow the supreem court freedom to make decisions based on truth . the ruleing they made on the realease of murders from prison is an example of poor and unfair judacation by the court.
Elena Kagan should recuse herself. We need an unbiased ruling not a political ruling.
Chief Justice Roberts has already responded to this with his decision that there is not sufficient cause for Justice Kagan to recuse herself.
Get over it
Kennedy will decide if the Federal government can force US to buy something from a 3rd party. God be with him and save us from ourselves. Dismantling obamacare most important task of court in years!
The ACA does not force anyone to buy anything.
Beachbum12 aka just another rereg,
[it is what it is]
Yes it is, it is a very good start to fix a national long-term problem that without some kind of fix will bankrupt our nation faster, sooner than any other issue we face.
I don’t hack I just use the tools provided by Newsvine like finding the exact date you registered or should I say re-registered is Nov 06, 2011.
Is “beachbum123” also your account, opened Oct 23, 2011?
Ouch Dennis! lol
Why isn't that right around the same time the bag boy pulled a Houdini?
Tickity Tock....
