Gingrich: The goal is to defeat Obama

BATON ROUGE, La. – Newt Gingrich spoke up in defense of Mitt Romney Thursday night, insisting any Republican presidential candidate would be a better president than Barack Obama.

"I want to start with something Rick said tonight that I frankly was very surprised that he said and that I hope he's taking back,” Gingrich told the Baton Rouge Tea Party event crowd referring to Rick Santorum’s comments earlier today.

Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum told a crowd of supporters in Texas Thursday that the GOP might be better off sticking with President Obama than "taking a risk" on MittĀ  Romney, who he referred to as the "Etch A Sketch candidate."

Santorum, addressing a crowd in San Antonio, Texas this afternoon took a swipe at Romney, saying, "If you’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate of the future.”

But Gingrich argued that re-electing Obama would be a “disaster” and Republicans have an obligation to do better.

Speaking on the campus of Louisiana State University, the former House Speaker told the few hundred person crowd they have no choice.

“I may have some very substantial disagreements with Gov. Romney. There is no doubt in my mind that if the choice was Gov. Romney or Barack Obama, we would have no choice,” Gingrich said. “The danger of Obama is so great that I would hope that every candidate running – Ron Paul, Gov. Romney and Sen. Santorum – that we would all agree that whoever becomes the Republican nominee, we have one common goal and that is to defeat Barack Obama."

While Gingrich finds faults with his GOP rivals, he has told crowds throughout his campaign that any of the other candidates are superior to the current president.

In closing his speech tonight, Gingrich laid out why he believes he is still the best candidate to take on Obama in the fall.

“Getting Washington to change in fundamental ways is going to be very, very hard.  You had better have somebody who wakes up every single morning prepared to fight. Because if you don’t have somebody who knows what they’re doing and has the willpower and the energy and the focus to do it, they’re going to make nice speeches and fail,” Gingrich said, noting that winning the Louisiana primary on Saturday would help reset this race once again.

Uhhhhhh,,,,,,,,,Bush is not only gone, He is spending 99% of his time in hiding, Cheney is even afraid to leave to USA and go to Canada because of International pressure to prosecute him for the war crimes he and Bush supported, Phosporus bullets, waterboarding, and many other crimes which have been on the books for 50-75 years were advocated by these idiots and they wil be hiding for the rest of their natural lives hoping the USA will never let their trials begin.

Re-Electing Obama would be a total disaster and the worst thing that could EVER happen,,,,,,,,,To the Republican party

If Obama's policies continue to gain strength and improve the job situation and economy as they have for the past 2 years continuously, No one in their right mind would even think about voting to put the people back in control who brought us the last 4 "Worst Recessions since the Great Depression"

In Republicans minds this economic improvement MUST be stopped by any means nessessary or their party is DEAD.

IF WE'VE HAD 24 straight months of job growth and unemployment still isnt back to where it was when bush left office you need to admit obama lost millions of jobs that existed under bush. i mean since you like facts and all................... now why dont you go cry somewhere if you arent man enough to admit ALL the facts?

The ultimate nominee will have to overcome all of the "help" he will be getting from Republican governors and state legislatures. The all but universal actions being taken at that level speaks far louder of GOP values than any single candidate could ~ or can. Taking a position of silence on state-based GOP issues is tantamount to endorsing them and voters will take notice of that. Meanwhile, the four seeking the party's nomination are mere clones of Gingrich ~ selling fear instead of solutions. Voters will take note of that also and it will play to the detriment of the Republican Party in November.

Do the Republican Candidates even listen to what the spew? Do they look at the approval rating for the U.S Congress? What part of we are not happy with the finger pointing obstructionism doesn the party not get??? They say Obama is dividing the country, but then turn around and say the number one goal is to defeat him. Not the number one goal is to govern, or to lead the country, or to employ new ideas provide new leadership, its just to defeat him. They have tied up Congress and held us, and important legislation hostage to this one end. When Obama wins again with 60-70% of the popular vote because the Republicans will not even come out and vote for any of these clowns, what are they going to do for the next four years. They have already wasted 4 just talking about defeating him, are they going to throw a party when his term limit is up and take credit for it? He is not the greatest president in history, in my opinion he has failed to lead at times when he should have stood his ground and let the chips fall where they may. His foreign policy has been right on. Although his intentions were good and a health care reform is badly needed, the timing and letting congress change so much of the original legislation was bad. With all that said, he is better than anything else that has come forward. Gingrich will have Israel bomb Iran, day one, because he runs his mouth and forgets that some people actually listen. Sanatorium will spend the entire time trying to force his "Christan values" down my throat, and Romney, where do I start. There is big difference between turning a profit by busting up companies and running a government. Again, I am voting for the lesser of two evils.

Its a 'trust me' approach. I suppose we should admire consistency for what it is, not what it represents.

They are not statesman or true politicians. They are ideologues who serve the ideology they embrace before any other entity. I have no fear of Romney. None whatsoever. No surprise there. It's been the republican's agenda since Obama stepped into office. They only want him to fail, that's why they fight him on everything.

obama had a dem majority of BOTH chambers of congress for his first 2 years that was BIGGER than any repub majority bush had. if obama is failing he's doing it all on his own. do we even need to discuss all the bush policies obama n dems continued that left-wing losers whine they were "forced" into continuing by the tiny Tea Party? you libs are jokes; just jokes.

And here I'd been disillusioned all this time. I'd always thought the goal was nominate a candidate who represented the will of the people, upheld what was good for the nation, and served our national interests.

Thanks for clearing it all up for me, Newt - now I know exactly why I'll be voting against you and your kind. You represent everything that is wrong with this country. A win for you is a loss for all the rest of us.

libs are laughable emotional losers and hypcrites. can yo say with a straight face dems wanted bush to be elected and re-elected and never opposed him on purely political grounds?

dems continued bush's policies; many are STILL IN EFFECT. but you cry and whine like babies how you were forced to; and so even though many of these policies like the bush tax cuts are STILL in efect now that things are ijmproving finally you want to give yourselves al the credit. it's a joke really

Uh ~ ~ Obama? Maybe? Gingrich despises most people for he deems them inferior to his intellect, insight, logic, and persuasion. Gingrich can't run fast enough to escape his own record and commentary. Gingrich's ego is in shambles knowing that a half-black uppity nobody from southside Chicago is preferred more by the masses than he is. That stings. Perhaps it should.

Don't know how to break it to you Newt, but one should never run for any office with the sole goal of defeating the incumbant. That was Bush's & Nixon's way and you see where both got us. You're supposed to run because you have a clear vision for our nation and feel it's the best one for us. That's the strength on which to build. Winning isn't everything despite the 90's mantra. I'll give Santorum credit for that even though I think he'd make a lousy president. We need 4 more years of Obama to undo the harm Bush/Cheney did to us.

we need 4 more years of obama? dont know how to break it to you but even if you got it obama's unemployment average will never be as low as Bush's; neither would his average price of gas or the Poverty Rate, or any njmber of other things. just face it you could never admit obama is a failure no matter how much evidence is put in your face

What is hilarious about this thread ~ and other like it ~ is that both sides foam at the mouth about their political adversaries but not a single mind has been changed with all the poisonous rhetoric. Its an exercise in futility but I suppose hope springs eternal for many who participate in the debate(?). Life has more rewarding interests. I leave you to go pursue some of them. Besides, bhofailed has become repetitious and like all jokes, once you have heard them they loose their allure. Have a nice day, all.
