BATON ROUGE, La. – Newt Gingrich spoke up in defense of Mitt Romney Thursday night, insisting any Republican presidential candidate would be a better president than Barack Obama.
"I want to start with something Rick said tonight that I frankly was very surprised that he said and that I hope he's taking back,” Gingrich told the Baton Rouge Tea Party event crowd referring to Rick Santorum’s comments earlier today.
Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum told a crowd of supporters in Texas Thursday that the GOP might be better off sticking with President Obama than "taking a risk" on Mitt Romney, who he referred to as the "Etch A Sketch candidate."
Santorum, addressing a crowd in San Antonio, Texas this afternoon took a swipe at Romney, saying, "If you’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate of the future.”
But Gingrich argued that re-electing Obama would be a “disaster” and Republicans have an obligation to do better.
Speaking on the campus of Louisiana State University, the former House Speaker told the few hundred person crowd they have no choice.
“I may have some very substantial disagreements with Gov. Romney. There is no doubt in my mind that if the choice was Gov. Romney or Barack Obama, we would have no choice,” Gingrich said. “The danger of Obama is so great that I would hope that every candidate running – Ron Paul, Gov. Romney and Sen. Santorum – that we would all agree that whoever becomes the Republican nominee, we have one common goal and that is to defeat Barack Obama."
While Gingrich finds faults with his GOP rivals, he has told crowds throughout his campaign that any of the other candidates are superior to the current president.
In closing his speech tonight, Gingrich laid out why he believes he is still the best candidate to take on Obama in the fall.
“Getting Washington to change in fundamental ways is going to be very, very hard. You had better have somebody who wakes up every single morning prepared to fight. Because if you don’t have somebody who knows what they’re doing and has the willpower and the energy and the focus to do it, they’re going to make nice speeches and fail,” Gingrich said, noting that winning the Louisiana primary on Saturday would help reset this race once again.

Obama is not a communist. Anyone who believes he is should spend a little time studying communism. He is not a muslim. He is not the spawn of satan. He may or may not be a good president, however, with all this venom that is coming from the right about him it is pretty easy for me to decide who to vote for. We can argue ideologies but we are all citizens and when someone is not accurate in their assertions because of political philosophy they are just lying. I cannot imagine anyone in office being more destructive than G. W. and he was re-elected.

Gingrich could very easily be president. Push Romney into a situation where he has to accept him as the VP ticket then once they are in office expose Romney for what he is and force him to resign. Or he could just kill him.

Allow me to rephrase Gingrich's views: an idiot would be a better president than Obama. Because that's what we have in the Republican field: Gingrich is an idiot; Santorum is an idiot; Paul is an idiot; Romney is an idiot; and while we're at it, Palin is an idiot, Bachmann is an idiot; Huckabee is an idiot; Christie is an idiot; G.W. Bush is an idiot. What a party!
All politicians have their weaknesses and faults, and obviously some more than others. It's a shame that when most American go to vote, they do so "holding their nose, voting for the lesser of two candidates.
Being from PA, I've never been a fan of Santorum, and it is no coincidence that he got crushed in his last Senate run..
Having heard some of Santorum's positions that he's taken "just this year"... Rick comes across as an idiot, who only "makes sense to himself" I guess.
Whatever chance he had due to any victories... he is his own "worst enemy".His own positions and statements are destroying.

The Republicans in congress can - but refuse - to do anything worthwhile until their guy is in the White House. It reminds me of the kid with the soccer ball who would get angry and take it home unless he was winning; the Rs will ruin it for everyone else unless they get their way. That's not a very good way to govern. I didn't put up with that when I was 10 years old and I won't put up with it now - Rs just want their guy at the helm so that their partisan legislation has an easier path.
Having a split congress/presidency is important, yet all hear the right talk about is "taking back control".
Gingrich sounded more like part-ism then being an idealist, that is a big reality from this Republican Party as far as anyone is concerned!
No Mr. Gingrich, the goal for the Republican Party is to get back in tune with the average American folks. A Party that only actively represents 1% of the country will always lead to disaster. Just look back a the Bush years and how much the American people have lost, both in real rights and hope.
Amazing how much damage the Bush family has caused to the Republican Party. They must have push back the Party at least 20 years, maybe more.
The subpar performance of this group of Republican candidates in this presidential cycle clearly shows how disappointed even then Republican voters are in their Party. Low turnout, split vote, candidates dropping off because a show of incompetence, candidates dropping off because they mistaken this process to a beauty contest and fielding the "office fool" as a candidate.
Not only have this bunch of clowns shown that they are not qualified to be President of the United States, they clearly demonstrated they are not even in the same class as President Obama.
It is clear by now to all Americans that President Obama will get his second term and hopefully his second chance to get is agenda through. As it should be the responsibility falls squarely on the citizens of this great country to give President Obama a responsible Congress to help him govern instead of impeding him to give Americans what they mandated him back in 2008. My follow Americans, please do not vote for your Party, vote for the best candidate in your district.
We don't need another war, another economic collapse and more begging for Arab oil. We need a clean economy, affordable healthcare for all, a strong coalition to the take care of our global military responsibilities and we a decent leader of sound mind and moral values in the White House.
Give President Obama his destined legacy.

Make a good hard read on the Republican platform and translate that to real deeds and priorities that are not included.
Yes, it is still an accounting on the Bush's failed presidency, which we will be paying for a long, long time.
It is time to change direction back into the real world and President Obama is the only one on the ballot with a sound mind that gets it.

it just cost me $77.00 for a full tank of gas today if i was a contractor working hard to make ends meet driving a big truck that i need for work it would be at least $150.00 thier is no excuse obama's energy & economic plan is a failure 100%

If you were a contractor, fuel costs would be a business expense.
If you were an economist, you would understand that we produce more oil & gas than we did when Obama took office, and there is every reason to believe the economy is in recovery.

Maybe instead of whining about the extra $15 a week, you should try use less gas. It costs me about $45 to fill my tank, and I only need to do so every three weeks.

Gingrich is right. To hell with the country. The most important goal as McConnell has said, is to get rid of that n____r in the White House. It's a shame he's not just `17 years old, it would make it a lot easier.
