Bloomberg writes that Etch-A-Sketch shows Romney “is facing fresh doubts about his commitment to core party principles.”
Politico calls this the Etch-A-Sketch campaign. “The problem is, this kind of rhetorical misfire is nothing new for Romney’s campaign,” it writes.
The AP’s Benac says the candidates are exhausted and it shows: “[T]hey make mistakes, get testy and lose perspective. At best, they may just seem to be off stride, muffing key lines and sounding, well, tired.”
“Harold Clark Simmons is on a mission to defeat President Obama in November and will spend almost any amount of money to do so. On Karl Rove's advice, the 80-year-old Texan head of chemicals and metals producer Contran Corp. and his wife, Annette, are the largest contributors to the 2012 election, having donated over $18 million to conservative PACs since the start of the race,” The Daily Beast/Newsweek writes. “Which Republican wins is not the point. "Any of these Republicans would make a better president than that socialist Obama," Simmons told The Wall Street Journal. "Obama is the most dangerous American alive."
Forbes lists the 80-year-old as the 33rd richest man in America with a net worth of $9.5 billion. He has apparently tripled his net worth since just 2010, when Forbes listed him as the 93rd richest man in America with a net worth of $2.5 billion.
“In a Pew Research Center survey released Wednesday, 38 percent of respondents said political leaders spend too much time talking about religion. The measure was an all-time high for the poll; it was just 12 percent in 2001, when Pew began tracking the public’s appetite for religion in politics,” the Boston Globe writes. “Most people, 54 percent, said churches should stay out of politics, while 40 percent said they should enter political and social debates. As recently as 2006, public opinion was essentially the opposite, with 51 percent of Americans believing churches should speak out and 46 percent saying they should keep quiet.”
GINGRICH: He was on FOX last night talking about Etch-A-Sketch.
ROMNEY: Overlooked by Etch-A-Sketch, Romney’s full embrace of George W. Bush and TARP: "I keep hearing the president say he's responsible for keeping the country out of a Great Depression. No, no, no, that was President George W. Bush and Hank Paulson."
Not only did Jeb Bush pick Romney as his choice for president, but he also said he should pick Marco Rubio as his vice president. "He is the best orator of American politics today, a good family man,” Bush told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “He is not only a consistent conservative, but he has managed to find a way to communicate a conservative message full of hope and optimism.” And: "The problem lies in the tone," Bush said. "You do not have to sacrifice principle to win the Latino vote."
The Washington Post notes that it’s unlikely Mitch Daniels will endorse before the primaries are over. (H/t GOP 12.)
Surprise. Romney leads in Connecticut, which votes April 24. Quinnipiac has him up 42%-19% over Santorum.
SANTORUM: Rich Lowry doesn’t think Santorum can win in Wisconsin. “Santorum doesn’t win unless evangelicals are more than half of the electorate. In Wisconsin in 2008, they were just 38 percent,” he writes.

Flip Romney is the biggest liar than anyone who has ever run for President.
Job1,
Let's be fair. I think Gingrich has him beat. This guy got kicked out of his Speaker job for writing rubber stamps, robbing charities to fund his campaigns, and eithy-something other ethics charges that were filed against him.
Yet 'til this day he denies any of them...with all do respect, I nominate Gingrich to be the #1 GOP liar.
Actually, I thought Palin told the great whopper about seeing Russia from her back porch. Or was it Romney saying Seamus loved being strapped to the top of the car. And sorry, I can't keep up with Santorum with his insistence that Obama has a religion hating Muslim agenda. Good grief. Where does one start?
But yes, I think Gingrich is in the lead. He got a head start saying he was not a lobbyist, just an "historical consultant."
I think exhausted candidates - and staffers - are a good thing. When they're fresh, they keep up desired appearances. When they're exhausted, every once in a while you catch a glimpse of what's real.
And do they think they get off the merry go round once they are elected - it gets worse.
How are they going to function then?
Just leave the governing up to the hired help?
Or will it be the Big Tycoons (like Simmons) with the deep pockets who will be calling the shots?
Harrold Simmons was Cowboy Ricky's banker. If he were to get his way, the Southwest US would be the worlds nuclear waste dump.
"I keep hearing the president say he's responsible for keeping the country out of a Great Depression. No, no, no, that was President George W. Bush and Hank Paulson."
Romney often sounds like a little kid who has just learned a new fact, and thinks he has to convince his listener of something he himself is still not too sure of. "no,no,no, really!" It's kind of bizarre.
Every Republican who knows Governor Romney's record has been afraid that Romney has been lying to them. Governor Romney's history showed he's like Play-Doh. He sees the image of the audience and does his best to try to sound like them and say what they want to hear.
However, everything about his past indicates he is a fake and a fraud as he is notorious for saying one thing in the morning and saying the exact opposite in the afternoon.
In addition, Governor Romney created more government jobs (raising taxes) than private sector jobs.
He was just starting to make conservatives believe that Romney was gone. Yesterday's Etch A Sketch comment proves the worst fears Republicans have in Romney.
Now, they start analyzing Romney's comments that they let slide.
They think about Romney's comments of sending all Air Craft Carriers to Iran's doorstep. Anyone with an ounce of respect for our military, realizes this would be a disaster for our military and their families.
When they look at who has been voting for Romney, they realize it's not the Republican base from rural districts. In fact, rural districts have a strong dislike for Romney.
Any endorsement for Romney, is now seen as a desperate attempt to save Romney from himself.
Romney keeps making Republican Governors and Republican state legislatures look bad. Either the Governors have been lying saying the economy is improving, or Romney is lying. It pits the base that elected these Governors against Romney.
How do you say your Governor has been doing great, but that Romney is right and employment in your state is not improving? Either the Governor has to go or Romney is the wrong candidate.
Is someone who spent months campaigning for the Republican Governor really going to spend months campaigning for a candidate who is calling the Governor a liar?
Forbes lists the 80-year-old as the 33rd richest man in America with a net worth of $9.5 billion
Wonder what percentage of his wealth the old man pays in taxes? He thinks President Obama is "dangerous" because Obama might force him to help pay his share to cover the two wars started by the last Republican president. Oh Noes!
I love that the old man is speading his wealth around finally, talk about a stimulus! 18 million so far, and the general election hasn't even started. Wouldn't it be funny if all this money flooding into the economy for the election actually created jobs and helped Obama's re-election?
President Romney.
Get used to it.
As per the Pew Research Center survey - in 2001 and even in 2006, people thought politicians should be spending more time talking about religion and that religion should enter the political and social debates.
Well, now they got their wish and it doesn't play out so nice in reality.
Now 54% say the church should stay out of politics. (up from 46%)
38% say leaders should not spend time talking about religion (up from 12%)
Go with Rubio, but don't forget he didn't get 50% in Florida. He just comes across as a economic moralizing Santorum. And I have a sneaky feeling that Charlie Crist might just pull a renegade Lieberman and take his moderates with him. The majority of Florida voters aren't so stupid not the see that the Florida GOP that backs Marco Rubio, is the same party that gave them Rick Scott. We've been told for two plus years that businesses were afraid to spend, invest, and hire. So what changed?
Wm. -Not Rubio - he's been tainted with the Blunt/Rubio bill.
A Cuban on the ballot means nothing to the general population of the
Hispanic community. Most Latin Americans don't like Cubans
The same Marco Rubio? That Talks Big but Fails to Deliver?
Marco Rubio Really Admires Dead Ra cist Jesse Helms.
So, Marco Rubio is going around calling America "weakened." He blames it on Social Security,
Medicaid and Medicare.
spented thousands with GOP credit card
Marco Rubio born to Cuban exiles? Not true, after all.
it time to recall this clown
